Sueños de San Juan Diego
14” x 8.5” x 7” handcarved & painted wood On December 9, 1531 Our Lady of Guadalupe first appeared to the peasant Juan Diego on the outskirts of Mexico City. Our Lady told Diego to have the local bishop build a church at this site, when the local Spanish bishop demanded proof of the apparition, it was on Juan Diego’s cloak that the Virgin of Guadalupe miraculously imprinted her image. I depicted San Juan Diego as a cholo holding a prison paño (handkerchief,) imprinted with images of Guadalupe and immigrant symbolism. Paño’s were first created by chicano prisoners in the 1930’s as a way to communicate messages. The paño incorporates images of Our Lady of Guadalupe also referred to as “Mother without borders” by migrant people because Our Lady of Guadalupe is a symbol of Mexican identity, faith, motherhood, feminism and social justice. By choosing to appear to the peasant Juan Diego she has always been looked to by the people the rest of the world rejects, such as the immigrants who are viewed by many as illegal criminals and subjecting them to imprisonment. She is invoked for safe travels, love, compassion and human dignity for all. The images on the paño show the hard traveled path taken for the dream of a better life. A descanso (grave marker) shows the lengths migrants are willing to take for that dream.

Essential Isidro
17.5” x 11.5” x 11” handcarved & painted wood San Isidro is widely venerated as the patron saint of farmers, peasants, day laborers and agriculture in general. “Essential Isidro” pays tribute to all the essential migrant farm workers who selflessly worked to keep food on our tables during the pandemic and every day. Immigrant farmworkers make up an estimated 73% of agriculture in the United States, they work extremely long hours harvesting crops in all types of weather while risking injury and illness from farm equipment to exposure to pesticides. During the pandemic, this work only picked up as farmers and ranchers were deemed essential to ensure the United States food supply chain wouldn’t collapse. Even though going to work meant significant risks to their health, laborers showed up each day to support their families and sustain our food supply. The irony of being deemed essential and illegal at the same time and still showing up to do the work while living in fear of being deported. Sprouting from “San Isidro’s” hands is a plant symbolizing hope of new life and brighter future.

Maria y su Sagrada Familia
54” x 14” x 11.25” handcarved & painted wood Maria y Su Sagrada Familia Is a lighthearted take on the image of the Holy Family. I depicted Mary as a proud Latina chola wearing a t-shirt with an image of Linda Carter Wonder Women. Like the Virgin Mary, Wonder Women is a symbol of beauty, empowerment, equality, justice and strength for many women and Linda Carter because of her own Latin roots. Graffitied on the wall is the image of San José and the Infant Jesus sporting their own cholo style. The infant Jesus holding a can of his Mothers Aqua Net hair spray that miraculously holds her hair up high.

San Sebastian
31” x 16.25” x 6” handcarved & painted wood, watercolor and natural based pigments My painted wood carving of the martyr San Sebastian is a modern take on one of the most portrayed saints in religious art. At first look San Sebastian invokes the stereotypical feelings of a criminal outcast being handcuffed. Unjustly, we automatically assume he did something wrong. The image of San Sebastian with his back turned to us is a symbolic symbol of how many people feel, often ridiculed because of how they look, what they believe, sexual orientation, ethnicity or just simply who they are. Not meeting many of societies expectations one can feel imprisoned in their own body. The tattoo images of San Sebastian, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Jesus represent ones higher faith and symbols of remaining true to the freedom of oneself.
