# CONTESTED URBANISM - THE CASE OF KASIMEDU a urban tug-of-war around who gets what, when and for how much.

+

+

Where will the people go?

+

You think we're pushovers?

Is it the people's fault, or yours, for not planning sustainable cities?

They don't understand the sea or our lifestyles.

Who will safeguard our boats and nets in the sea?

All these scenes from the movie ‘VADACHENNAI’ were based on the interactions between the Govt. officials and the fishermen sangams, focussing on the contestation between these 2 entities where the protaganists stands up to voice out against the developers to portray how the infrastructural developments favour the rich and non natives while neglecting the native artisanal fishermen community who lost their right of land and forced to find work elsewhere. The movie critically addresses the imageability of the place and its people through their lifestyle and culture.

The entrances are cleared from encroachments with defined motorized and non-motorized access. A sense of entry way is created using archways and plazas as buffer before entering the harbour.

• THE COMMUNITY PLAZA The harbour initially accomodated houses for these people which was later evacuated for development and the bridge constructed divides their place of work and live. The plaza is introduced to establish a sense of inclusivity for the community within the harbour premise. This can accomodate various community events and activities round the clock. .

• THE PUBLIC PLAZA The demand of open public space in the vicinity and the intent to establish a vibrant relation between the public, the community and the harbour led to the design of this meandering plaza with seating spaces and dense greenery. Eateries, public toilets are some of the amenities to host people, thus becoming an inviting landscape in the city.

• PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY

The public vehicle parking is restricted to the entrance zone while the movement of export vehicles and internal e-rickshaws are all streamlined to create a pedestrian friendly harbour. Continuos pedestrian paths, raised junction conditions and tactile pavement are incorporated to promote pedestrian safety.

• THE PROMENADE

SEMI OPEN PLINTH

The harbour promenade is now a flexible open spaces designed with modular furnitures, planters and entrance follies. The wharf is fragmented not just to streamline the movement of people, fishes and e-cycles during morning auction scenarios but also to scale it down as a public space in the late evenings which can accomodate events, food trucks etc..

• THE SOCIAL PLAZA The social plaza acts as a congreation space for the administration, research sector, fishermen, community and the sangam houses. The plaza as an extention of semi open plinths of both the buildings and the net mending shed attempts to create a positive interaction between the stakeholders. This can hold formal community meetings, announcement venues and panchayats.

THE NODE Urban Design Studio ‘022 Pedestrian Bridge Design @ CHENNAI CENTRAL Individual project

+

+ The initial brief to create a crucial link between the medical college and the medical facility, spanning railway lines, a river, and a flyover to facilitate movement for students, staff, and professors, is re-interpreted upon the study. The connection between the facilities is not only weak but also lacks proper access from all the transit nodes. Furthermore, envisioning it not merely as a link between two points but as a node connecting various points can address urban-scale challenges and cater to a broader user group, including commuters and patients.

THE CONTEXT

+

+The Madras Medical College was built on the

land covering 3,25,000 sqft. on the erst-while central prison premises in 2010 and started operating in 2012. However the site is still disconnected from the urban fabric by Huge compound wall, Secluded pathway, Railway tracks and a waterbody; ideal for a prison but not for a College campus.

+ * The distance to walk between the MMC College to all other destinations is studied to understand the disconnect.

CHENNAI CENTRAL is one of the major transit hubs of the city consisting of nearly every form of public ground transport systems : buses, trains

NODES

(sub-urban & interstate), Mass rapid transport system, Metro trains along with autos, rickshaws & taxis. Thousands of people from every other corner of the city commute to almost every other corner using this multi modal transit hub. The hub also houses the city's largest medical facility, a medical college and some major administrative offices, drawing patients, students and staffs from across the city. However the connectivity between points remain long, tiring and unsafe due to lack of shade, unsafe pedestrian pathways, urban heat island effect and traffic.

PIECE OF EARTH & PIECE OF SKY Kairo looro design competition ‘023 Primary school @ SENEGAL Individual work

PIECE OF EARTH & PIECE OF SKY is the idealised interaction of open and enclosed areas to produce a habitable environment is represented by Earth and Sky. The concept is based on the need to provide children with welcoming learning environments. South Senegal’s environment and inhabitants are more earthbound. Combining African architecture embodies traditional and architectural principles through the application of modernist materials. The earth symbolises the mud’s cold, contained character, whereas the sky symbolises a warmer, brighter outside. The fact that the room is underground naturally keeps it cool.

Inspired from various African settlements, a radial cluster approach is adapted for arranging the volumes around a central open space which further cluster to have smaller partcipatory spaces in between providing possibilities for students from different class to engage and participate in group works. The clustering of spaces helps prevent over lapping of the activities while not disturbing each other. They also can serve multifunctionally during post school hours.

The idea is visualised at the Safane hamlet in south Senegal’s Casamence region. Within a 4.5 km (walkable) radius, a total of nine small hamlets are present where every one of them lack a proper educational facility. The site selected is centralized and easily accessible from each hamlets and can provide oppurtunities for positive interactions.

DETAILED SECTION

The majority of the volumes remaining submerged minimize the need for constructing new walls while enclosed with rammed earth walls above the surface. The enormous truncated roofs, were reinterpreted from some traditional African architecture, and they serve as cooling towers for the spaces below. The warm open outdoor serves as a comfortable space for gatherings during the evenings. This provides opportunities for a time less space. The architecture becomes a part of the rich rustic African environment.
