RETAIL AND EXHIBITION DESIGN

MANJARI SAHU
Hello! I’m a traveler, a reader, a learner and an extremely passionate chef. Design has attracted me ever since I could organize thoughts in my mind. A final year student at MIT Institute of Design, I have a passion for understanding and studying various aspects of life, may it be history, culture or the arts. Design for minimalism and functionality have always been my outlook. When I start with a project I like to go its very roots and therefore enjoy research and brainstorming for a project the most. At the very same time, I love to detail out my concepts. [I have a soft spot for orthographic hand drawings!] In my free time I enjoy swimming, sculling, cycling and reading. An avid photographer and a traditionalist by heart, I love using my film SLR and I recently learned the art of black and white film developing. I am currently looking for a 6 month diploma project. If you like my work please do contact me at manjari.sahu.257@gmail.com Thank you!

THE D-LANE PROJECT
the D-LANE project
Executed in a side-lined lane within Koregaon Park, Pune, the Project was an exploration of the relationship between matter and memory. It was a mix of the past and present that encompasses a wide sense of want for the future.
RESEARCH + DOCUMENTATION
PHOTOGRAPHY + CONTENT WRITING
It was an in-depth study and understanding of Urbanization and New Age Demographics, which are constantly being formed within the Lane.
“We tried to articulate the cycle of Creation and Destruction, of Pasts and Futures, of Hopes and Beliefs and the Urbanization that permeates these experiences.”

Histories
These are the modern high rises keeping in the general feel to Koregaon Park. Average apartment sizes would be around 5000 ft. These proximity to the slums makes it an interesting study in contrasts. Duplex, glass, concrete and steel juxtaposed against the tin and adobe.
These are independent permanent single storey structures mostly constructed in the 1950’s – 60’s, housing mostly lower income groups. These are probably the original inhabitants of the area. Ownership and tenancy issues might be contentious here. Family and ethnic structures are interesting here, given the fact that an entire lane is housed by 7 different ethnic groups.
The lane is truly representative of the social flux prevalent in most growing cities. The Osho Ashram has put KP into the spotlight, and that reflects in the polyglot nature of the area’s residency index.
The lane needs to be looked at from a historic perspective of land occupation and usage. The development of ethnographic, emergence of the new classes, its development from the communities historicity, etc.
On 1100 meters, people of different social classes live side by side. The street, partly running parallel to the river, is depicting a complex picture of the city, its people, their environment, activities and professions. With portraits of individuals and groups this variety should be shown on behalf of the entire city. The stories and destinies of the residents, medical doctors, craftsmen, salesmen, mobile teashops, slum inhabitants and many more depict this urban area. MUNIR SHIEKH

INDO-GERMAN MELA PUNE
28 DAYS LIVE PROJECT GROUP WORK
INDO-GERMAN MELA PUNE
30 Days, countless hours, 12 pavilions and nearly 40 workers. This is what the Urban Mela Documentation Project was all about. 6 Retail and Exhibition Design students of MITID Pune, under the guidance of their professor went about taking photographs of the entire construction set up of the Urban Mela in Pune. By the end of our project we had nearly 10,000 photographs including several time-lapses and detail construction of the pavilions which cover nearly 12000 sq. m. of land at the Deccan College Ground in Pune . At the end the entire sequence of the Mela set-up was presented in an exhibition at the Pune Indo-German Mela itself.
This documentation was done in co-operation with Germany and India 2011-2012 Infinite Opportunities Concept: Markus Heinsdorff Realization: MIT Institute of Design, Retail and Exhibition Dept Panel Design: Manjari Sahu, Retail and Exhibition Design Student.

“A name indicates what we seek, An address indicates where it is, A route indicates how we get there” Jon Postel

TENSILE STRUCTURES MODEL MAKING FILM PHOTOGRAPHY DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
TENSILE STRUCTURES Tensile-resistant systems include stayed, suspended, cable truss, anticlastic, and Pneumatic structures. Although compression, bending and shear may be present in some tensile structures, tensile stress is most prominent. Translucent by day and luminescent by night, tensile structures provide sustainable, cost effective, and artistic design solutions that interact with the environment.
MODEL MAKING Brief : To study an existing space as a whole, including materials, textures and colors and to replicate the same as a scale down model.
