Studying at a reputed foreign destination definitely results in the student’s academics gaining an added dimension. However, what is additionally required is relevant work experience in the field of study. This helps the student in cultivating practical knowledge and augments job-related skills.
The Study in USA for International Students is bound to be full of opportunities, since US HAS the highest number of universities in the QS World Rankings 2019. The USA also has one of the best education systems in the world, with opportunities of cutting-edge research. The student also has the option of improving his practical skills through the Optional Practical Training (OPT). Here’s some detailed information on what OPT is and how it can be availed.
Simply put, an OPT is a temporary employment for F-1 students, in a field directly related to their study area. Eligible students can gain 12-month employment after they have an authorization. There are three ways to engage in an OPT: • Part-time OPT (20 hours per week or less) during academic session. • Full-time OPT during Vacation • Full-time OPT after completion of course-work.
Types There are 2 types of Optional Practical Training that the Candidate may choose from: Pre-completion OPT: A student needs to complete one academic year at an SEVP certified institution to be eligible for the Pre-completion OPT. Those who are eligible may work part time during academic session or full-time during vacations. Post-completion OPT: Eligible candidates can opt for an optional practical training after their course concludes. However, those students who have already engaged in Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for a year or more are not eligible. Additionally, if the student has done a pre-completion OPT then that time period will be deducted from his post-completion OPT time.
Extension for STEM students The OPT can be extended to a further 24-month period if the student is enrolled for a science, technology, engineering and math course, while doin g Bachelors, Masters or PhD in USA. Also, the employer must be enrolled i n and should use E-Verify Employment Verification program operated by the USCIS.
Applying for an OPT You need to first ask the designated school official (DSO) at your institution to recommend you for the OPT. After the DSO, endorses your I-20 for the same, you need to file the form I-765 and pay the required fee to the USCIS. The Employment Authorization Document (EAD) must also be submitted. The OPT can begin only after the student’s I-765 is approved.
The student must also meet the eligibility requirements before he can apply. These include meeting the minimum attendance requirements and showing adequate academic progress. The OPT may well turn out to be the key takeaway of the study abroad journey of the student.
