manly and its famous beaches Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the spectacular Sydney Harbour, Manly sits on a beautiful peninsula, seven nautical miles north-east of Sydney.

Manly is located a mere seven miles north-east of Sydney and is considered the gateway to Sydney’s beautiful Northern Beaches. “7 miles from Sydney and 1000 miles from care” – a slogan used by the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company in 1940, is still the best way to describe ‘Australia’s Premier Seaside Resort’.

No visit to Sydney is complete without coming here.

Manly was named by Capt. Arthur Phillip in 1788 for the indigenous people living here: “Their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place”. Today Manly is mostly famous for its popular beaches – a long stretch of sand on the ocean side, running from Queenscliff to Manly Beach, followed by the Fairy Bower rock pool and Shelly Beach. Furthermore you’ll find a number of stunning beaches on the harbour side. A symbolic feature of Manly are the prominent Norfolk Island pine trees on both the ocean and harbour beaches. In 2012, the 4km stretch between Freshwater Beach and Shelly Beach has been declared “Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserve”. Read more about Manly’s rich surfing history on page 53.

Fishmongers – fine dining in a box Head Chef Ryan Mansell and his team at Fishmongers Manly know how to handle fish! The simply furnished BYO and licensed eatery is tucked away in Rialto Square (just a block back from the beach), but don’t let this pint size cafe fool you. With its signature Crispy Kumera garnish and a batter that would delight a Tokyo tempura chef and also house crumbed calamari, this little shop has fast become a local favourite. A selection of A-grade fresh fish, chargrilled prawns, freshly

shucked Sydney Rock Oysters and tender melt-in-your-mouth baby octopus are popular staples with a ‘monger’s twist’. All served with your choice of a generous signature salad with a golden wedge of corn, chunky skin-on hand cut chips or tempura vegies – this is not to be missed! Fishmongers prides itself on only using local fresh species and keeps sustainability in mind when choosing its catch of the day. All dishes are available in the trademark takeaway cardboard box to enjoy on the beach or you can relax al fresco style, with a glass of wine in the courtyard. Choose your favourite seafood selection and enjoy the Fishmongers ‘fine dining in a box’.

Genuine Didjeridoos What is a Didjeridoo? The “Didge” is a wind instrument originally found in Arnhem Land, Northern Australia and is quite possibly the world’s oldest musical instrument. It is made from limbs and tree trunks hollowed out by termites (insects), cut and cleaned out with a stick or hot coals. The instrument produces a low-pitch, resonant sound with complex rhythmic patterns and was originally used as an accompaniment to chants and songs.

Hand Painted Artefacts The meaning behind the Art “In Aboriginal languages, there is not one definition for the term art. Aboriginal art is our expression, our culture, our living. An extension of our identity. Not just an item for a wall or living room. Aboriginal art is painting, sculpture, dance film making, photography song writing etc.” Brenda Croft ñ Boomalli

Certificate of Authenticity Supporting Indigenous culture All fine art paintings are sold accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, artist profile and are supported by images of the artist with the work. The Gallery encourages its customers and collectors to be aware and concerned that aboriginal people should directly benefit from sales. 50

Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserve With a century-long surfing heritage, Manly is widely regarded as the birthplace of surfing in Australia. Manly was the site of Australia’s first legal bathing (1902), hosted the first known body surfing contest in 1908 and was the launch site of Australia’s first official surf patrol boat (1907). The first recorded attempt to ride a surfboard took place in 1912, when C. D. Patterson challenged the waves on a solid board he imported from Hawaii. In 1964, the first World Surfboard Riding Championship was hosted in Manly. Local surfer Bernard ‘Midget’ Farrelly won the men’s title and Phyllis O’Donnell the women’s.

In March 2012, Manly-Freshwater was honoured to become the first World Surfing Rerserve in Australia and the third in the world due to its outstanding surf breaks as well as its rich surfing history and culture. The Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserve stretches over 4km from Harbord Point to Fairy Bower, including Freshwater, Queenscliff, North Steyne, Manly and Shelly Beach and Fairy Bower Point. Besides the many popular beach breaks, it hosts the well-known Queenscliff Bombora, Frenchmans Reef and the infamous Fairy Bower, home to some of the largest waves ridden in Australia.

Learn Australian surfing style Manly Beach is a popular destination for the learning surfer. If you haven’t surfed before or you’d simply like to refresh your skills and your knowledge about the beach, it is always a good idea to take lessons at an accredited surf school. Qualified surf instructors will show you everything you need to know to get on your feet quickly, point out the best and safest spots for beginners and how to behave in the water to avoid dangers. Dropping in on other surfers is probably the worst thing a learning surfer can do. So, to be respected by other surfers make sure you start by respecting them and follow standard rules. Like any other sport, the key to learning is practice. “Surfers’ Code of Etiquette” signs, shaped like surfboards and complete with easy-to-follow illustrations, placed at North Steyne Beach and the boat shed at Queenscliff, outlining the basic “rules” of surfing etiquette (see illustration to the right).

If you have a few days, hire a car and explore all this area has to offer – Manly Car and Truck Rentals offers flexible rental cars at competitive prices (see page 9). Immerse yourself in the Northern Beaches surf culture, go for a refreshing swim, a bushwalk or just kick back and relax at one of the many scenic spots along the way. Panoramic lookouts such as Bilgola and West Head are ripe for taking in the views. Join a tour to famous Palm Beach with Flamin’ Galah for a chance to see your favourite TV stars on the set of Home and Away. Or how about a thundering Harley™ ride along the cost with Sydney Thunder Rides (see also page 16)? Freshwater and Curl Curl are two popular surfing beaches just north of Manly. It’s a fairly easy walk from Manly: follow the path around the Queenscliff headland (or take the steps; the path requires some climbing) and continue past the rockpool at the northern end of Freshwater Beach. Take a small detour to see the Duke Kahanamoku statue up on the headland near the Harbord Diggers (for more information on Manly’s rich Surfing History see page 53). A scenic boardwalk along the coast will take you to Curl Curl Beach. Dee Why and many of the other suburbs along the coast have a good selection of cafés and restaurants. Surfers will find fantastic spots away from the crowds and suitable for most levels. Long Reef, Collaroy and Palm Beach’s “Kiddies Corner” are great for beginners. Manly to Spit Bridge Scenic Walk (Manly Scenic Walkway) HIghlights: T he fishermen’s huts at Crater Cove, abandoned since the 1980s and the secluded Reef Beach, also known as ‘Pirates Camp’ This walk is viewed by many as one of the most scenic harbour walking tracks in the world, it contrasts old and new Australia, taking you past modern harbourside suburbs juxtaposed with Aboriginal sites, native coastal heath and pockets of sub-tropical rainforest.

Manly to Spit Bridge:

All flora, fauna, rock formations, Aboriginal sites and historic structures are protected. Dogs are not allowed in the National Park, however, there is an alternative dog route. The walkway is well signposted with various entry points and information boards along the way. See pages 76/77 for a detailed map.

3 – 4.5 hours (10km)

Manly Eastern Hill Heritage Walk This walk will take you through the lush streets of the Eastern Hill, where a history of planting and building has resulted in streets of native fauna and federation homes. Several beaches on its fringes can be visited. The hill is a steep one, and there are some steps on the walk. See the Scenic Walkway map on page 77 for a walking route (marked in light blue). Beginning at East Esplanade and finishing at South Steyne, the walk takes up to 3 hours. It may also be completed in sections: • Finish at Little Manly Point (return via Wood St) • South Steyne to Shelly Beach and return • From Little Manly Point take a shortcut via Darley Rd to St. Patrick’s Estate (ICMS) More info about this and other heritage walks: manly.nsw.gov.au 73

Stunning coastal views along the way to North Head

Cabbage Tree Bay Coastal Walk

walking guide

Starting at Manly Life Saving Club, South Steyne (at the southern end of Manly Beach) and following the stunning ocean foreshore to picturesque Shelly Beach, this walk is a Manly favourite. Gain an insight into Cabbage Tree Bay’s unique marine life, plants, animals, history and attractions by viewing the eco-sculptures at the Shelly Beach end of the walkway. These sculptures embrace the harmony and serenity of the surrounding natural beauty, each of them represents a special feature of Cabbage Tree Bay. Keep an eye out for water dragons basking in the sun.

This walk takes about 15 mins (30 mins from Manly Wharf), is flat and suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

Shelly Beach to North Head Sanctuary Combine this walk with the Cabbage Tree Coastal walk to experience Manly’s diversity. Allow 1 hour from Shelly Beach (approx. 1.5 hours from Manly Wharf). Rich in history, North Head was deemed a special place by the Aboriginal people. It is home to native animals including the locally endangered long-nosed bandicoot. Apart from amazing views and diverse flora and fauna, along the walk you will encounter a sandstone wall built in 1880 and WW2 gun placements.

From there you can take bus #135 back to Manly Wharf or continue to explore more of North Head Sanctuary (Gunners’ and Fairfax walk, see next page) or make your way back to Manly Wharf via Collins Beach (Spring Cove) and Little Manly (2 – 2.5 hrs). See map on pages 76/77.

At Shelly Beach, take the steps leading up to the car park at the top of Bower headland where several viewpoints overlook famous surf breaks and offer spectacular coastal views. Follow the track through Parkhill Reserve, past the “hole in the wall” and a “man-made lake”, a former quarry site. Stay right and cross Blue Fish Drive where a steel grid track leads to the North Head Sanctuary and the Gatehouse Visitor Centre. 74

Gunners’ Walk, North Head Discover the natural beauty and military history of North Head. Once a School of Artillery where Army gunners lived and trained, the headland is now a sanctuary. Explore pristine heathland, patches of rare banksia scrub and a hanging swamp. Walking tracks lead to hidden vantage points offering dramatic ocean vistas. The walk takes about 1.5-2 hours, highlights include the many flowering plants, diverse birdlife, military remnants and views of the city, harbour and ocean. For more information and a self-guided tour pick up a brochure from the Gatehouse Visitor Centre and see the map on the next page.

Gatehouse Visitor Centre open daily, 10am – 4pm More information: www.harbourtrust.gov.au

This 1km walk connects three lookouts and takes about 20 minutes, but we recommend you allow plenty of time and bring a picnic — the views are amazing! Ideal for families with children, the Fairfax Walk is also partially wheelchair accessible (some steps are required to access one of the viewing platforms). The short sealed circuit track starts at the end of North Head Scenic Drive and loops around the top of North Head, offering dramatic cliff scenery looking out to the endless Pacific Ocean and majestic Sydney Harbour.
