Utopia is an ideal community or society possessing a perfect socio-politico-legal system. The word was imported from Greek, by Sir Thomas More for his 1516 book Utopia, describing a fictional island in the Atlantic Ocean. The term has been used to describe both intentional communities that attempt to create an ideal society, and fictional societies portrayed in literature. It has spawned other concepts, most prominently dystopia.

“Berlin, Germany: 1,000 ice sculptures melted under the Berlin sun as symbols of the effects of climate change, drawing attention to a new WWF report on risks of Arctic warming. The ice sculptures, handcrafted by Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo, were set up in a public area by WWF Germany to show the direct effect of climate change in the Arctic on the whole planet and the future of humanity and nature. (www.streetartutopia.com) 19

Meat-free days are a campaign to reduce anthropogenic climate change and improve human health and animal welfare by reducing factory farming. It has been endorsed by the city councils of Ghent, Belgium; Hasselt, Belgium; Mechelen, Belgium; São Paulo, Brazil; Bremen, Germany; and Cape Town, South Africa. In the People’s Republic of Poland, the meat-free day was a custom cultivated by the government because of a deficit in the market. It was targeted at limiting meat consumption, mainly in favour of flour-based foods. The meat-free day was traditionally Monday, or later Wednesday. For older generations non-meat day is Friday. -All-Mighty Wikipedia-

My first idea for a personal project was to do a serial of anti- advertisements, but I didn’t do that, because I think it is really hard to be original on that field.

For my experimental font, I wished to integrate three basic forms: The triangle, circle and rect足足angle. This initially worked out well, but i was not satisfied enough. After a bit more experimenting, I tended to rely more on circular shapes. Unfortunately, it seemed there are quite some fonts around that are circle-based. I just had to redesign it.

My environmental issue -themed Utopia inspired my third and final redesign. Recycling is a big part of environmental issues, so I came up with the idea to base the font on the recycling symbol.

KUSTAA SAKSI
When I started to think about visual image of my booklet I was really inspired by Finnish illustrator Kustaa Saksi. I think he has really fresh and groovy style to illustrate.

The project I’ve been working on is a booklet intended for children who are between the age of 6 and 7. Its purpose is to teach them how to go about their daily lives while being more aware of sustainable development. The booklet includes an educational part that contains brief and easy-to-read facts related to environmental issues, which is then followed by a practical exercises that help the children to put into practice what they have learned. I consider it important to instruct children about these issues at an early age, as it is much easier for young children to adapt to new ways of thinking.
I started some sketches for the booklet by pencil, but soon enough I had to move to Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to use a bright color range and cute characters, typical for children books. Uppercase Sans-serif font was my choice for the typography, because it is used in Finnish first grade schoolbooks.
