GIRL FRIEND BOY FRIEND

With over ten books released so far, Girlfriend Boyfriend marked the newest release for NYC photographer, writer, and filmmaker, Richard Kern. Known for his contributions to magazines like GQ, Vice, Playboy and previous books like the controversial Action, Girlfriend Boyfriend offers what most come to expect from Kern: shirtless models, well composed photos, and beautiful lighting. Released alongside a collaboration through Shizen Books, the east village located salon, Girlfriend Boyfriend featured an October launch party with limited edition Richard Kern panties and music selected by Cibo Matto’s Miho Hatori. Out now.

Quirky, Cute, slightly overplayed and maybe even over worked by this point, JPop’s brightest bubble of fun, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, continues her commercial dominance by linking a deal with Nintendo. Appearing in commercials for the new New Nintendo 3DS (that’s the name), Kyary hops around with Mario, Pikachu, and the like to show off the New 3DS’s “kisekae plates” that players can use to change the outer appearance of their portable game systems. Kyary herself has helped design two exclusive kisekae plates that will be up for grabs by the end of November in Japan - See below for one of them.

#LOOKS Our first session of #Looks comes from the North Carolina based rapper himself, Chae Buttuh. With a recently released mixtape, opening for Mykki Blanco, and an original style steeped in heritage we had to ask where he got his inspiration from.

M

annyo: if you had to describe your personal style in one sentence, what would you say?

Chae Buttuh: Boughetto meets weirdo in a unisex store near you. M: You’ve talked a lot on social media about people not knowing where their own looks originate from and only paying attention to the latest trends. What has inspired and created the style that you wear today? CB: Fashion is an art form that people have never taken seriously. Back in the early 2000s when no one gave a fuck about a Medusa head or Jeremy Scott I remember telling my family and friends that I was going to study fashion and they laughed. Now with the help of “fast fashion” everyone and their mama thinks they’re in the know while still staying oblivious to the cause and effect. Fast fashion and social media have also combined to create this identity that restricts self-expression, but I remember when there was a defined line between basic and stylish people. Today it seems like everyone is the same because we’re all following this “I’m into fashion” trend. The only good thing about this is that it puts being basic on a high level meaning my style can only get higher as I evolve. My style is a reflection of my upbringing. My mother and aunts have always been into African cultures and made sure my cousins and I were well aware of who we are, so you’re always going to see me with something on that represents that part of my life whether

it’s a jewelry or a print. I’m also a huge fan of vintage and retro – right now I’ve been into a lot of 90s and 70s looks. Those two eras are like peanut butter and jelly. You can’t have the 90s without the 70s… you just can’t.

a show with Mykki Blanco this year. How does that feel?

CB: It feels INDESCRIBABLE. As an artist you can sometimes grow impatient with things or lose a project before picking up another one. I was very pleased by that fact that I completed M: Of course, speaking of trends… What do you see becoming popular in [Trust Issues: So Eye-C Vol. 1] and got nothing but love from my boos and 2015? peers. Some of the songs on Trust IsCB: With these past few years being sues are clear reflections of my recent breakup with my boyfriend of six years blacked out, color will definitely be (five years on, one year off) so I have this feeling of emancipation because I’m no longer tied by him or his bullshit. And OMG that show with Mykki was stupid amazing. The energy was right and the crowd was bumping. Performing with someone whom you’ve looked up to is just love. I also opened up for Le1f and did a house show with Abdu Ali this year – both great artists as well. M: What kind of advice would you give to someone looking to better figure out their own personal looks? CB: My advice to discovering your personal style is to reflect on your past. Whatever you experience as a child can only enhance you as you grow because it’s the new black. I’m sure people are those things that make you unique. going to start gravitating to brighter days pretty soon and if you pay close I urge people to tap into their own attention you can see the slow shift to history and get a bigger picture of who color in both mainstream fashion and they are instead of double tapping on underground yourself. Revived pieces Instagram to give themselves a picture of who they are not. from the 90s are going to stay too, but I do believe that some of the early Find Online At: 2000s will get mixed in somewhere. .GIF S FROM TUMBLR TO THE AUCTION BLOCK

While you can scroll through an endless stream of GIFs on your tumblr dash for free, collectors paid thousands for them in a series of international auctions. Weird, right? By Sarah Gehle

GIFs have this crazy digital omnipresence, from the BuzzFeed listicles your aunt shares on Facebook (awkward “LOL! U just HAVE to read this!” included) to that family group iMessage your mom weirdly added your brother’s girlfriend to. They make your TV episode recaps worth scrolling through, and they sell for thousands of dollars. Digital art is finally considered art, in a super important Fine Art sense, by collectors. In October 2013, “Waterfall 6,” a GIF by Nicolas Sassoon, sold for $1,300 at Phillips, the world’s third largest auctioneer of contemporary art. Take a moment to let that sink in. The world’s third largest art auction house sold a GIF. Somebody paid $1,300 for a looped animation that they can never physically possess. It probably shouldn’t surprise me as much as it does. It’s not like shelling out for ephemera is a new trend. People pay relatively exorbitant amounts of money

to enjoy fleeting experiences all the time vacations, sky diving, that $1,000 ice cream sundae with edible gold in it. If something is designed to be experienced rather than owned, isn’t it still worth paying for? While buying digitally-created art isn’t new (Hello, glorious t-shirt collection!), buying art that can only ever exist digitally is. “Waterfall 6” sold as part of Phillips’s first-ever digital art show and auction, Paddles ON!, which they presented in partnership with - you guessed it - tumblr. Paddles ON! featured a wide range of digitally created and inspired works, from GIFs and glitch art to websites and webcam videos. You can officially tell your parents that the hours you spend updating your tumblr

might not be a total waste. The works sold at Paddles ON!, including Sassoon’s GIF, earned a total of $90,600. That seems like a lot when you think about how easy it is to get your hands on a GIF compared to, say, a marble statue, but it’s sort of pocket change when you consider that Phillips regularly auctions off single paintings for millions of dollars. In fact, the most expensive piece auctioned off was physical. A CCTV chandelier called “Asymmetric Love Number 2,” by Addie Wagenknecht, sold for $16,000. At the second Paddles ON! in October 2014, held this time in London, the most expensive piece - Michael Staniak’s “IMG_885 (holographic)” - sold for £25,000. Although they comment on digital reality, both pieces are physical. They can be touched, displayed, vaguely gestured at, and referred to as “the Picasso” or “the Wagenknecht” or whatever whenever you feel like snootily impressing your guests.

MANNYO X BABERELLA FOX

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALBRICA TIERRA BARF TROOP, THE GIRL POWER TOTING COLLECTIVE, HAVE MADE A NOTICEABLE IMPACT ON THE INTERNET. FIVE GIRLS WITH ENOUGH TALENT INDIVIDUALLY TO OUTSHINE ANY GROUP, THEY’VE JOINED TOGETHER TO RELEASE MUSIC, VIDEOS, AND PERFORM TO PACKED SHOWS. WE CAUGHT UP WITH BABERELLA FOX (REAL NAME: ALBRICA TIERRA), THE ATLANTA RESIDING AND RAPPING PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE GROUP TO FIND OUT WHAT MAKES HER TICK.

annyo: I read on your website that you fell in love with photography after trying out a lot of different passions in high school. What led you to fall in love with rap, and how did you hook up with the Barf Troop babes?

ruled by others bigger and louder than her, so they try to say that her words aren’t important. She’s here to challenge that idea.

Albrica: I’ve always been a huge fan of rap music and it’s the main musical genre I grew up listening to, all thanks to my mother who exposed me to a multitude of different rap artists as a kid. So I feel like it’s been in my blood because it’s been in my childhood. I met all the members of Barf Troop through Tumblr - we were all really close friends for couple of years before getting together to create a rap group. I love them all like my own family. They inspire me every day in more aspects of my life besides music.

A: The story behind this image (page 9) is that the girl modeling is Justin Baber! It’s one of my favorites because of the bright colors and fun patterns and the fact that one of the Barf Babes is the subject - Christina is so fun to photograph.

M: Photography seems like a completely different creative experience from rapping and performing. Do you feel like there’s some overlap, or are they totally different outlets for you?

A: It’s pretty easy to hide behind a giant lens, but it’s a different experience when you’re in front of one... on stage... in front of a room of people waiting to hear your songs. It makes me a little nervous because I suffered from stage fright as a kid. But I love it because there is truly something magical about being on stage with your best friends, just having fun, with other people looking up and having fun with you! I never in a million years thought I would be given the chance.

A: I’ve tried to correlate both art forms, but I’ve realized that keeping the two separate reflects on how I view myself as an individual. Albrica Tierra the photographer is totally different from Baberella Fox the rapper and that’s okay! I can express myself as cute, bubbly, and goofy in music and more reserved and delicate in photography - all of this makes up who I am. I’m a Scorpio, we love alter egos! M: Your photos have this cool, ethereal feel to them, like looking at just one page of a story. What’s your motivation as a photographer? Do you try to channel a similar aesthetic as Baberella Fox? A: What motivates me as a photographer is seeing the things around me with an unorthodox point of view. I’m highly interested in the relationships between a person and their environment and it’s my goal to reveal that relationship to the audience. Baberella Fox is doing a similar thing, except she’s portraying the relationship between her and her environment. She’s this tiny little thing in a world

M: Would you tell us the story behind one of your favorite photos you’ve taken?

M: Guest question from a shy girl photographer: What’s the most challenging thing about going from behind the camera to in front of a mic? What do you love most about it?

M: When you’re out taking photos, what’s the perfect environment, mood, and setting for you? Does this differ from when you’re creating music or performing? A: I mostly do studio work for my photography, so I like it when things are 100% under control. I like playing pop playlists to keep my models and assistants upbeat and hype for a shoot - I have to have a fast-paced energy while still remaining focused on what I’m achieving because people react the best to that. When I’m making music, I’m less controlled - I just let my emotions flow and let everything that’s buzzing around in my head come out. Then, I work and rework what I’m trying to convey until it makes sense. CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

M: I know you’re still young (We are too!), but what kind of advice would you give to someone younger than you? What kind of lessons have you learned from photography, music, and going through school? A: I want you to remember that although hard work is important, so is having fun. It’s the only thing that will keep you sane if you have a crazy difficult workload! Go out with friends, watch cartoons, blast Migos at 3 a.m. on a Wednesday night and scream along to the lyrics really fucking loud. M: And of course, the most dreaded question of all time: What are your plans, hopes, and dreams now that you’ve graduated from college? A: I hope to keep growing as an artist - whether it’s photography, music, or whatever life throws at me. I just want to be great.

RAPID FIRE

Favorite Photographer: This changes a LOT, but currently it’s Charlotte Rutherford. Favorite Musician: I have too many favorites, but Nicki Minaj is queen. Favorite City I’ve Visited: Nothing’s compared to Atlanta! Current Equipment (photography): I rent my equipment! I usually choose a Canon 5D Mark II or III. Favorite Late Night Food: pistachios Find Her Online: @BaberellaFox

MANNYO ARTIST

Karmessiah

FIVE RELEASES IN AND HE’S STILL GOING STRONG. M: You’ve got five full releases behind you: Unforgivable, Teen Idol, Lushwave, Darius Lusher, and Pressure. Do you think any of these say or reflect anything about you? K: I don’t know what they say about me. I’m not that self aware. I get bored real easily, maybe they’re a reflection of ADHD. M: Your latest release, Pressure., is a mixture of instrumentals from over six years. What led you to decide to release them as they are instead of putting your own vocals over them? K: I had always planned to do an instrumental album

because I had a lot of pieces I thought were better without lyrics and I wanted to use them in some way. M: Your music gives a good representation of Karmessiah musically. What represents you visually? K: The only accurate representation of myself visually would be my actual self, but other than that I’d say the color red, the paisley pattern, and nighttime. M: Media so far has commented on how out-ofnowhere your lyrics can sometimes sound. How much does real life play into your music lyrically and how much of it is created for Karmessiah? K: Real life plays a lot into it. That’s the problem, real life is ugly. Ugliness can get transformed through art, music, etc, but with that some details might have to get switched around or exaggerated. Not much of it is created anymore because I’m always having some kind of new experience M: You’ve got $200, a free evening, and no work tomorrow. What are you going to do? K: Imma get back to work.

Whether it’s an Imperium Silver Crystal or a Crystal Gem, everyone has a bit of magical girl stashed away in their heart of hearts. Ever wondered where you fall on Mannyo’s mahou shoujo spectrum? Take this quiz to find out. 1. Your friends invite you on a shopping trip even though they know you don’t have any money. Do you: a. Go anyway! You might not be able to buy anything, but at least you can spend some quality time with your baes! n__nv b. Drag them for being such assholes and drink about it later. c. Fake an excuse and use the opportunity to get close to Jessyfer’s hunky boyfriend. What the fuck kind of name is Jessyfer, anyway? Your name is way hotter. d. Your friends wouldn’t do that. They know there would be... repercussions. 2. Your boss blames you for a coworker’s mistake. How do you deal with it? a. You try to resolve the situation in a respectful, forthright manner, knowing you can vent to your friends about it later. What an ass... e_e b. You quietly fume until everyone goes for drinks after work, when you have a few too many and let your coworker know exactly what you think of them. c. You quietly fume until everyone goes for drinks after work, when you have a few too many and let out some pent-up aggression with your coworker back at their place. d. You calmly approach your coworker, cut off a lock of their hair, and incorporate it into the voodoo doll you have already prepared in their likeness. Retribution will be swift. 3. You finally get to the club when your rival appears and begins wreaking havoc. How do you react?

a. You try to protect everyone, no matter the cost! b. You ignore your rival until they start breaking bottles of Dom. You’re so ready to wreck them, you don’t even care that the entire club just saw you transform. c. Midway through your fight, you notice that your rival is actually pretty hot. You decide to let your guard down just enough for a few of your rival’s hits to rip your uniform in certain strategic places. d. Good thing you just perfected a spell to rend flesh from bone. No one comes between you and the club. 4. Your annoying neighbor interrupted your monthly ritual sacrifice, ruining weeks of preparation. How do you punish them? a. Force them to watch youtube poops until they beg for mercy. >:3 b. Before you can start ranting at them, your neighbor holds up an extra ticket to TomorrowWorld. You decide it’s time to make amends. c. Perfect timing! You were worried your sacrifice this month was too cute to waste on some ritual. Your unfortunate neighbor will be the perfect substitute. d. You mutter an incantation under your breath, causing your neighbor to drown in their own blood, then settle in for a night of Netflix.

5. A shadow passes across the face of the moon. Its muted glow filters through a clearing in a dying forest, providing just enough light for you to see five charred stumps forming an empty circle. In the distance, you hear a low moan. You think: a. S-so scary... help... T~T b. Where’s the keg? Wrong clearing. c. Ooh, somebody’s getting some. d. Goddammit. Who stole my pile of human skulls?!

If you picked mostly As, you’re a kawaii magical girl! You’d be right at home on pretty much any cutesy anime. It’s tough to pull off that level of saccharine sweet convincingly, but you do it with aplomb. If you picked mostly Bs, you’re a lush magical girl! You know a good party when you see one. Just tone down the tsundere, and don’t forget to leave some wine for your friends. If you picked mostly Cs, you’re Magical Thot-chan! Keep feeding your anaconda. You are beautiful. We wish we were you. If you picked mostly Ds, you might be more witch than magical girl. Either your soul gem is about to turn into a grief seed, or you’re just into some seriously dark shit. Either way: We do not want to fuck with you, but we definitely want to run with you.
