RESIDENZE NAVIGLI Navigli, Milan, Italy

Thematic Studio Third Semester in MAUD Professor: Camillo Magni, Bruna Vendemmia

The Studio addresses the question of Architectural Design, on the various scales, in its complexity and multi-disciplinary nature. The studio experience, which integrates the various disciplines that contribute to design education, teaches students, in theory, and in practice, to develop and formulate original ideas, including in a research context. The idea was design an housing building program. To develop a medium scale building (7.000 – 15.000 square meters) for investigating urban and constructive issues. Design a complex program able to join different function: residential, commercial and social.

SITE ANALYSIS

Due to the context and surroundings ( Ring road, railway buffer, and Recycling plant), This area, which has good potential and a dense green cover, is unused.

1

The railway is one of the main barriers that separate the site. However, this zone would be transformed into a green buffer as part of Milan Green Belt.

2

Despite having a good potential having a historical fountain and being located beside Navigli, this green area is interrupted by a sub-road connected to the ring road.

3

This zone connects Navigli road with the side path that leads to the church. The existing canoeing club interrupts the space creating undefined areas.

4

This area works properly although, the existing historical fountain is not working. The problem is that it is surrounded by roads, which creates an isolated island.

5

Isolated by the railway bridge (with only one tunnel through), this area has an untapped high natural value. The water channel divides the space into three zones.

6

Visual Heirarchy The straight line of the compound wal along the road defines direction and the tower is a visual heirarchy directing the flow

1

The building edges define the direction and the visual heirarchy of the tower and directs the flow

2

3

The church tower establishes a clear visual connection far away from Navigli and eases the flow towards the space

URBAN DESIGN STUDIO Grande Praco Forlanini, Milan, Italy. First Semester in MAUD Professor : Grazia Concilio, Gian Luca Mazza

This studio interprets the theme of urban planning and design by looking at the city as an integrated system of performative services whose transformation considers also a well defined citizens experience, the differentiated interactions between citizens and the urban functions, the diverse practices characterizing the specific urban functions and the crucial relevance of the area in consideration of the extreme need of green infrastructure for the city of Milano.

PROGRAM PHASES

PHASE 1 PROGRAMME Regenerating unused space providing aminity services ACTIVITIES Reuse of Cascina Bruciata Reuse of Old factory Reuse of abandoned park Furniture for playground Sustainable bus stops

PHASE 1

On the first phase, we are trying to use the abandoned and unused space in Novegro region and regenereate them with new activities that would support the livelihood in Novegro. Cascina Bruciata, old factory and abandoned park are reused.

PHASE 2 PROGRAMME Rediscovering Novegro as a connecting bridge between GPF and Idrascalo ACTIVITIES Ramp towards Idrascalo Visual connection through landmarks Street design along the Gateway flow Pathways in farmland To via Pascoli

PHASE 2 In the second phase we concentrated on the circulation flow from GPF towards Idrascalo through Novegro. So we created Novegro as a connecting bridge between GPF and Idrascalo.

PHASE 3 PROGRAMME Attract new users to Idrascalo ACTIVITIES Subway of M4 metro into GPF Park extension near Airport Visual connection with Novegro Landmark Bike & Pedestrian lane towards Novegro

PHASE 3 In the third phase we have concentrated on attracting new users towards Novegro. For this we have created a park extension near Airport for airport people to experience a fragment of park space and treating the space with same service amenities as treated in Novegro region.

The large green field of the Cashina is an opportunity for touch point on via Novegro. New connection is added between the physical therapy building and the vertical path. By activating the Cashina we try to create a new mechanism for the neighborhood through differnt actors and the vistors to regenerate the life of Novegro

LOCKERS & SHOWER

There is a very large green field near the School with a huge abondoned car parking. We decided to construct a new land mark here, The watch tower and a ramp to cross the highway between Novegro and Idrascalo. The area will become a space for the students and the workers who work in Novegro, We try to create a local park inside the complex situation of Novegro to regenerate the life here. The area is subdivided into three parts as play ground, Locker and shower.

Yazd, Iran. Architectural Design Studio Second Semester in MAUD Professor: Heidari Afshari Arian, Bovati Marco

The Studio proposes an experience in architectural design facing the proper complexity of the process. Contextual, typological, functional, constructive, expressive and formal issues of the architectural design process will be treated in their mutual relationship and interaction. The Idea was to propose an low cost housing complex in Yazd , Iran.

HABITAT

for construction workers Chennai,Tamilnadu,India Undergraduate Thesis Guide : Prof Madhumitha.

Construction workers have their accommodation in the outskirts of the city,in which they are employed. This is due to the higher rental prices which they have to deal with their working wages in a developed area due to this reason, the workers opt to stay in the less developed areas, where the rental i.e cost of living is relatively low and hence affordable. The idea was to propose a low cost housing for the Construction Workers.

SITE STUDY At the foot of a beautiful mountain nearTirusulam is a bumpy narrow stretch bordered by a row of tin-sheet huts. Occupying just over 4.68 acres., each hut is crammed with 10-15 migrants, reeling under scarching heat. This colony has a life span about 35 years which is due to the site location between thirusulam labour colony and highway which helps the labours to transport through out the city for work. These people are contract workers for CEEBROS constructions and also take contract works for TNHB projects.Due to longer existence of the site most of the people here are skilled labours with higher work experiences. Migrant workers who reside in the labour colony at Tirusulum live in deplorable conditions. For about 521 people there are just 8 toilets and an open bathing area. Some residents of the locality said that, earlier, workers would defecate in the open near the Tirusulam railway tracks. This stopped after iron fencing was raised around the colony after a few alleged cases of railway track deaths of these workers

POORNA SCHOOL OPEN STUDIO, Banglore

Client : Dr. Indiraa Vijayamsa Chief Architect : Sundeep Nagaraj Role : Junior Architect | Site Architect

The project was for Dr. IndiraVijayamsa and the area was abour 8000 sqft located in Sathnur Village, Banglore (2007). The idea was to use a homogeneous process where there is no distinction between design, structure and construction. The main emphasis in this project was to create a building that embodies the spirit of Poorna School’s conception; the overall development of the child and its hands on teaching philosophy. The form of the building is divided into two main linear sections. One houses the library, resource room, and other administrative offices. The second holds the class rooms, laboratories, and other support spaces.

Construction was done uasing materials available within a 10 km radius. The brick walls are thick and have mud mortar (mixed by masons by trudging heavily upon it until it reached the right consistency) as in traditional buildings.

Pupil Tree Prep School OPEN STUDIO, Banglore

Client : Prabhu Jagirdar, Pupil Tree Learning Chief Architect : Sundeep Nagaraj Role : Junior Architect | Site Architect

The building is simply organised. The existing structure consisted of two rows of interconnected rooms. We retained the room divisions on one side and opened up the other section of the building allowing for a versatile transition space. A small structure was added in front of the existing building as an administrative/ public section, and about 650 sqft was constructed to the rear of the site; this included two classrooms and toilets that open on to a courtyard.

Common circulation spaces were maximised to create the impression of openness on a fairly small site. 4′ high doors are used thought the building, to break the scale for the little children who would be the primary users of the space. The new buildings were roofed with Kadappa stone and palm wood rafters.
