PRODUCTION PROCESS COURSE FACULTY : BHARAT SUTHAR WEEKS: 2
Learning • Five major printing processes and the selection of most appropriate printing process method along with limitation and advantages of each method. • Things to keep in mind during Prepress - Press - Postpress to save paper wastage and decrease cost of production • Color modes (CMYK - RGB) to keep in mind for printing • Data Input method using different types of scanners • File types, File format and other technical aspects • Different types of papers their sizes and weight used in print techonology • Binding methods
Production process deals with the various process of printing technology and the methods that are used in small scale and large scale production. Certain technical decisions should be taken by us as a graphic designer to minimise the wastage and minimum cost of production.
We learned that Printing is a process for production of texts and images, typically with ink on paper using a printing press. It is often carried out as a large-scale industrial process, and is an essential part of publishing There are five major printing processes that are used in the print industries, namely Relief or letterpress or flexography printing, planographic or offset printing, Recess or intaglio or gravvre printing, Stencil or screen printing and finally digital or toner or inkjet printing. We also learned how to select the most appropriate printing method for any job and the limitations and advantages of each printing process. We also focused on Selection of color and its output variables. The four and additional color requirements and the post production process.
Preproduction process involves learning about continous tone, half tone, screen, halfton screen, screen angle, duotone, Color Gamut etc. It also involves planning and desingning. Improper planning, design, and setup can cost more time and money, or can even create unprintable projects. We understood color management and devices such as scanners, monitors, and ink jet printers as they all use color differently.

We also went for field trip to printing press. We experienced the printing processes at a different scale, mostly the work was done by big machines, printing of product graphics and production of cardboard boxes etc.
In the final week of the course we created a digital artwork in a group. We made a poster to show the difference between the food habits of india and germany as one of out group member was German exchange girl. The poster we made were printed using different printing processes namely offset and screen printing process.

SCIENCE & LIBERAL ARTS - IV COURSE FACULTY : DR. URMILA BHIRDIKAR WEEKS: 1
INTRODUCTION TO THEATER
LEARNING How theater is the earliest form of showing expression with audio and visual media. The idea of minimal design with limited number of actors. The role of tragedy in theater
Theatre is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, and dance. It is the earliest medium humans tried to show expressions
Greek tragedy was a popular and influential form of drama performed in theatres across ancient Greece from the late 6th century BCE. Theater were usually performed in an openair theatre. The structure of Greek tragedy is characterized by a set of conventions. No violence was permitted on the stage and the death of a character was not shown but had to be heard from offstage or conveyed through messages. At a time, maximum 3 actors were permitted on the stage
We were shown many movies related to tragedy first one was Antigone (1961) who defies her uncle’s decree that her traitorous brother should go unburied and therefore find no rest in the afterlife; however, her actions have tragic consequences. Then we watched a Marathi play called “Ghashiram Kotwal (1976)“ and Hamlet (2000), lastly we watched “Blood Wedding (1981)“. For the submission, I chose to write review about Ghashiram Kotwal with reference to its form and political - social complexity which finally leads to the tragedy in the play.

These two are my final design after the process of sketching, scanning, refining and vectorising it.
Simplification/Abstraction We learned about simplification or abstraction which is the process of distillation towards more intense meaning, it involves removing unnessary detail and making the object as simple as possbile with minimum number of lines and use of black and white space. Selection of object was based on the selection of theme. I chose cleanliness so I selected Dust pan.
We had to use minimal number of lines and black masses to represent our thing in a minimalistic way. In the next assignment, we had to redesign, the newspaper ad of NID Admissions that comes every year in different newspapers. The idea was to design it in such a way that it uses less space still legible and visible to the readers and by the using font of our choice, placement of text, hierarcy of text etc.
Calender Next assignment was to design a calender using the constrains. We were provided sheets of number of days in a month, having two weight and two color, of typeface Whitney. First we cut and pasted the number to create a calender and then we vectorised it. I wanted to show my calender in a minimalastic way and highlighting the sundays and the Indian holidays. My calander can also be used as a pocket calender because of its visiblity at a smaller size.

Convocation Address
Dear graduating students, Chairman of the Governing Council Hasmukh Shah, members of the Governing Council, Dr. Koshy, family, friends, faculty members, ladies and gentlemen, good evening. It is indeed a great pleasure to be invited to deliver this convocation address. I would begin by congratulating all the graduate students and wishing them the best in their future personal as well as professional careers. I want to apologize for the fact that you do not have a written speech. I was approached several times and I said that if I promise you a written speech I promise I will not deliver. I would rather look at the ambience see the settings and then make some points as to what I feel that needs to be said on the spot. So if I ramble a little bit you have to forgive me. I really want to open my mind in today’s setting. Iteis indeed an incredible setting I look at the back drop reflecting Indian tradition, I hear the noise from the birds combining nature and I see young graduating students with hope for the future. NID is a very well known world renowned institution. I had several interactions in the past when Ashoke Chatterjee was at the institution. Unfortunately this is my first visit and I am indeed delighted to have the opportunity and honoured to be here to see an institute that has made a significant contribution to the world of design. To me design is all about celebration of life, festival, joy. It is great to feel and touch a well designed product. Design does deliver beauty and adding beauty in many ways is an important part of enlightenment, energy enthusiasm and excitement. Design is not about fashion nor is it about just one or two aspects. Design is about productivity, efficiency, cost reduction. Design is about delivery something at the end of the cycle that consumers can really enjoy using. Design is about simplicity, utility, ease of maintenance, people talk about zero defect design is also about how to recover from failures. Design has to touch hearts and minds of the users. And design does help many-many different dimensions. India has had a great tradition in designs. Look at the temples in Madurai, look at the Taj Mahal, monuments, Golden Temple, the colours, the costumes, the smells, the sounds all around from north to south, east to west reflect the design diversity of this country. The past has been a very important part of the lessons we have learnt in designs in India. Unfortunately I find that it is not really reflected to the extent it should in modern India.

Shri Sam Pitroda
Annual Convocation Address 2003
“Freedom gained yesterday is no more ours; Men gather but dry seeds of last year’s flowers.” The second factor that I mentioned relates to the educational philosophy. There is not an institution concerned with applied knowledge that imparts professional skills where I have not heard the unending and age-long argument about ‘theory’ and ‘practice’. Perhaps it started when the first system of formal education came into contact with the guild and the apprentice- ship systems. It will probably continue until doomsday. I have heard this argument on this campus and on many other campuses. The substantive outcome of the argument may be important. But what certainly is important is the fact that this argument takes place. If the institution legitimises the fact that the argument should take place then implicitly it has accepted as part of its educational philosophy that its educational programme must be constantly reviewed and hanged as circumstances warrant such change. And it is these arguments and discussions that will bring this review about. By discussing it on this campus, you implicitly accept change as part of your educational philosophy. This is as it should be. Over time new balances need to be brought about between theory and practice. Every institution in every different profession during each phase of its growth will have its own appropriate balance.
Mr. Pitroda came to the USA in 1964, after receiving an advance degree in Physics from India. He studied Electrical Engineering in Chicago, worked at GTE and formed Wescom Switching, Inc. In 1980, Wescom was acquired by Rockwell International, where Mr. Pitroda became Vice President, overseeing Rockwell’s Telecom business world-wide; he held this position until 1983. In 1984, Mr. Pitroda returned to India and founded the Center for Development of Telematics. In 1987, he became advisor to the Prime Minister of India, with the rank of a Minister, on National Technology Missions related to Drinking Water, Literacy, Immunization, Oil Seeds, Milk and Telecom. Mr. Pitroda was the first founding Chairman of the Telecom Commission in India, responsible for National and International Telecom operations, policies and administration, with over 500,000 employees.

Learning Learning digital aspects of colour. Various color format and impact of it of it on the file sizes. Usage of color in technical and web based things.
The first topic that we got was to research about the uses of colour in nature and did a brief presentation. Colour is used in different ways in nature for example camouflage, night vision, hunting, relating taste, Bioluminiscence etc.
Then for the assignment we had to make a poster combining the topics discussed in class for examples, Image modes, Analysis of file sizes, changing color space, bit depth, color blindnes.
One of the assignment was to make a possible application out of our research. Basically me and my partner selected Bioluminescence for research and made wallpaper for devices like desktop, iPhone and iPad etc.

OPEN ELECTIVES COURSE FACULTY : KRISHNESH MEHTA WEEKS: 2
Drawing from the mind Learning Mind is the most important thing in our body. Characteristic of humans like consciousness, perception, thinking, judgement, and memory are enabled by mind. Understanding our mind can boost these characterstics and make us successfull. We can convince ourself to do almost anything.
I decided to to choose the elective “Drawing from the mind as I wanted to understand the science behind drawing. I wanted to understand how the mind works while we are drawing and also while we are thinking. Also I wanted to develop my thinking which is of course done by mind. I attended the lectures of krishnesh in foundation and I found them interesting and wanted more, so I decided to take up this course as my elective.
In the two weeks course we worked on things like how to convince ourself to do anything, how to focus, presence of mind, our inner locus of control, how to operate from joy love and care, how to free ourself from innibation and how to activate our whole mind. All these things will lead to improvement in our drawing skill. Learning these things can lead to better life.
From brain point of view all the process of expression are same. But as our mind is not fully activated while expressions this is not the case. Our learning from childhood is based on linear understanding which is called Intelligent quotient (IQ) and somethings Emotional quotient. But to activate the brain fully, we need Spiritual quotient. This can be developed by practicing Yoganidra.
We went for field trip to the two forests where we faced our inner fear. In the day time we meditated by sitting on the sedementry rocks and absorbing the energy from the earth core. In the dark, we went to the other forest where we walked 200 steps alone away from the group. The target was to keep our inner locus of control and not to worry about anything negative.
