Meet Christelle Rodas and her family and see where their Sunday takes them…
A WORLD OF ADVENTURE Born and raised in France by her Italian mother and French father, Christelle Rodas spent a year of her graduate studies abroad at the University of Costa Rica. While traveling for the holidays in nearby Guatemala, she met Conrad, who was home from college in the US to visit family. Four years later, they married. And while neither Christelle nor Conrad grew up outdoorsy, their backpacking honeymoon in the Torres del Paine in Argentina changed all that. “We didn’t know what we were doing, but we quickly learned how to pack a backpack, set up a tent, and filter water on that trip!” says Christelle. “We had so much fun and just fell in love with the outdoors.” Much like their parents, sisters Sophie and Emma are adventurous and love exploring. The Boulder, Colorado-based Rodas family now spends most of their time hiking, biking and snowboarding, as well as home-schooling their two daughters. “It’s more world-schooling,” explains Christelle of their approach to education, which blends multicultural studies, travel, and outdoor exploration. The girls are fluent in both of their parents’ native languages, as well as English and some German. Playing outside is their favorite activity, by far. “There is so much to explore and learn outdoors; it’s a place where our daughters can push themselves, build confidence, and run free,” says Christelle. “We’re an adventure family,” agrees Sophie as she throws an armload of pine cones skyward and lets them rain down around her. “I love nature so much, I want to protect it and all the animals, too.” Then she is gone in a flash, racing her sister to climb the nearest tree.

BEYOND THE BRIM For 30 years, our family-owned company has been pushing the boundaries of hat-making. Every day, we are taking steps to make our hats more durable, sustainable, and socially responsible—so we feel good making them and you feel great wearing them. From innovative craftsmanship and ethical manufacturing to meaningful conservation, we’re always challenging ourselves to go Beyond the Brim.
Key Accomplishments • The majority of our large manufacturing partners completed social audits in 2020, with a goal of having 100% of our partners complete audits by 2021, and 100% every year after. • Sunday Afternoons was an early adopter of the Higg Index, an outdoor industry-led sustainability program designed to help brands measure progress around social and environmental metrics. In 2018, we completed the Brand and Retail Module (BRM) and worked with three of our largest manufacturing partners to complete the Factory Environmental Module (FEM), identifying opportunities to lessen our impact in manufacturing. • We have completed comprehensive Tier 1 and Tier 2 mapping with our manufacturing partners and subcontractors. Tier mapping, sometimes called supply chain mapping, allows us to collaborate with our manufacturing partners to trace all materials sourced on behalf of Sunday Afternoons. This process helps us gain better supply chain transparency. Our Spring/Summer ‘22 Collection is inspired by the skips and leaps of a summer day that knows no bounds, with adventure beckoning on the horizon. This season we’re introducing brand new styles, including the VaporLite™ Collection—our lightest technical running hats yet, offering UPF 50+ sun protection and ultimate packability. Long hikes more your speed? The new Backdrop Boonie is designed for fast, sunny hikes that require maximum coverage. For Kids, we have even more lightweight and protective offerings than ever, including the Ultra Escape Boonie, a style they’ll never want to take off. We like to move in ways that allow simplicity and no fuss, with styles that move from trail to town with ease. No matter where your adventures lead this spring and summer—Don’t Forget Your Hat™.
• In early 2020, Sunday Afternoons removed all individual polybags from direct-to-consumer shipments and switched to using recycled tissue paper as a lower impact alternative. • Our Ashland-based retail store team developed a collaborative program with local shop owners to increase awareness and upcycle polybags in downtown Ashland, Oregon.
ETHICAL MANUFACTURING A lot has changed since we first started sewing Original Adventure Blankets™ and hats in our garage in Ashland, Oregon, but the care we poured into those early projects remains at the heart of our sourcing and manufacturing. Today we collaborate with vendors, third-party auditors, and industry organizations to continuously improve working conditions, prioritize employee well-being, and lessen the environmental impacts of our manufacturing processes.

This valuable annual assessment helps us improve our operations and reduce our environmental footprint year over year.
We stand behind our hats for as long as you stand under them. Materials and workmanship are guaranteed for life.
Our water-resistant treatments are PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) free. In addition, many of our products that feature DWR (durable water repellent) are free from potentially harmful chemicals found in conventional water-resistant and waterproof products. Currently we are transitioning numerous styles with DWR from C6 to C0.

Recycled Fabrics and Certified Textiles Our team is actively working to increase our assortment of recycled products, as well as bluesign® and OEKO-TEX® main body fabrics and trims. Many of our fabrics already meet stringent bluesign® certified or OEKO-TEX® 100 standard requirements.
