Being an exchange student in the UK

d a o r b a l r i g h c n e D iary of a Fr By Manon Caenen
On the 18th of September, welcomed by a surprisingly good weather, I started my new life as a French student in the UK. At 7 a.m. I was boarding on the ferry and in an hour my life changed forever. The University of Kent was to become my school for the entire year and my British dream life was getting real.
After 6 months of living in the UK, let me now reveal some tips and the true story about my experience.
6
How to be fully integrated? Arriving at a University with more than 10 000 students is quite exciting at first. You think you are going to make lots of new friends, discover new cultures and chat with everyone. Though, time goes very fast and in order to meet your new gang that will be by your side for the years to come, you will need to follow a few steps. First, make sure to attend the Freshers’ week! Full of activities, parties, free food and new students from all around the world, this event is definitely the best way to start Uni! Step two: try to join a society which will allow you to meet people that shares the same interests as you and enjoy themed parties. As for me, I joined the Hockey team and met some of my closest friends. Step three: go to socials and nightclubs, because where else would I have met my friends if it wasn't for The Venue. Parties are always a good way to make friends and even if the language barrier is something you are afraid of, with an extra drink you suddenly become a fluent speaker. So, if after all those steps, you haven’t made friends yet, there is still the remaining options to chill out at the gym or to talk to your classmates during seminars, because let’s be honest sometimes class get really boring.
How to manage and save money when living on campus? Moving to University means being independent and managing your own money. And as this sounds appealing it can also be really tricky. With nearly 10 café/restaurants on campus and the bustling student night life, my bank account rapidly let me down.
So I had to come up with a quick solution to still be able to enjoy my experience abroad to the fullest. I found a part-time job in the city centre. Finding a job in the UK is quite easy when you are motivated and willful. Moreover, in order to save some money without restricting myself I developed a few tricks. For example, we all know that you have to pay to get into British nightclubs so keeping my coat for the whole night, boiling and sweating, was for me a solution to pay off my investment.
« Tr ying to be a full English speaker is not a piece of cake » M.C How to get rid of this « terrible » French accent? Trying to be a fluent English speaker is not a piece of cake. In fact, it is difficult at first to get used to hearing English all day long. During my first days, my brain was overheating from being focused on understanding English. But then with practice and a bit of getting used too, talking and comprehending English became a second nature. Living with Englishspeaking mates is really what helped me improve my linguistic skills. I even taught them a little bit of French. So in overall thanks to the amazing people I met I overcame the language barriers and like to believe I can now speak English fluently.
How to adapt your lifestyle when you are a cheese lover in the UK? French wine, real cheese, and a good baguette is the food you are
7
going to miss when living in the UK. But as insurmountable as removing those products from your diet sounds, you will quickly realize that the British have some pretty good food too. Cider, eggs Benedict, and fish and chips are some of the delicious English dishes you will want to try. But to be honest, when you are a student, and perhaps a bit lazy, French or British, junk food becomes you’re best friend. In fact, the many deals fast foods offer, push you to resort to the easy option.
To sum up this adventure, after 6 months of living in the UK: I absolutely love my British life!
« Finally I did survive! »
How to enjoy the most of your experience? When being abroad one of the most important thing is to take every opportunity. So even though English weather isn’t always the best and rainy days are more frequent than royal scandals, getting out of bed and being up to new adventures is the key to making the most out of your experience. In fact, I quickly felt in love with the UK: I took my mark easily, I joined the hockey team, I found a part-time job and above all I made incredible friends! To enjoy your exchange time to the fullest, find a country that attracts you, choose studies you are interested in and finally just dare to step out of your comfort zone because I promise you will come back more mature and confident. I am convinced that going to a foreign country for a year is an inescapable experience and incredible opportunity that you
Bear in mind to be yourself because diversity is what makes University an enriching and mind-opening place. 8

A delightful moment at BRUNCH - Canterbury
By Manon Caenen
W
illing to sip a smoothie, snack a home-made Panini or both?
At the heart of the city centre, next to the Cathedral, this comfy and old-school coffee/restaurant is definitely the place to be in Canterbury! Well decorated, Brunch is one of those increasingly uncommon café: a family-owned, situated in the high street, cooking with local products across a small menu and fair prices. This is a father and daughter run business, George is in charge of cooking the soups and Georgia is the manager. As soon as you enter the place, pure coffee and hot home-made bread smells immediately has you immersed in the ambiance. From delicious blended teas to any unimaginable coffees, this restaurant offers a large choice of drinks as well as home made soups and sandwiches. Fresh daily specials are one of the brand’s culinary specialiIes. My friends and I started with Brunch’s famous panini, which is a bruscheLa full of quality products such as French goat, bacon and some pickles combined with a large laLe. Needless to say that it was a delicious combo! The meal was executed perfectly, everyone was unanimous: it was a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. In sum, everything was ‘instagramable’ ! BRUNCH style of cooking enables all age generaIons, vegans and food lovers to enjoy the food served. Prices are really aLracIve since it only costs under 10£ for a full home-made meal with freshly cooked products. It is a big deal for those of you willing to eat healthy and BriIsh food. For tourists, this is the opportunity to taste good English cuisine. Eat in or take away? You choose between the terrace, the 1st floor, the lounge upstairs or TA.

is smart, modern space too. It is an independent restaurant that offers a well-prepared menu in accordance with the atmosphere. People also goes to Brunch because of its vintage look: a mix between red bricks, wood, slate and sobriety. The decoraIon added to the ambiance make Brunch a friendly se]ng place. In sum, a coffee shop that fulfill all the criteria.

It may have taken a while to get to my mouth, but I’ve found the best coffee shop in Kent! It is rated by Trip Advisor and The Guardian as one of the top 10 cheap places to eat in Canterbury.
