masonic lodges, built across sydney around a century ago as private venues in which freemasons could meet, have over the past few decades attracted some creative thinkers keen to convert them into to grand residences. watsons Bay boasted the highlight conversion, its 1920s masonic Hall becoming one of the best-known designer homes of sydney. the lodge was built on the site of the former Gap Hotel, which later became the town hall. it hit headlines in 2015 when thenprominent fashion designer collette dinnigan and her entrepreneur husband Bradley cocks bought it for $6.25 million. it was sold by James Packer’s former right-hand man matthew “ched” csidei and his lawyer wife lauren roscoe, who had undertaken its initial styling after paying $2.7 million for the property in 2005. the Gap road mansion, which has five bedrooms, five bathrooms and a swimming pool, last traded for $9 million in 2016. it has since had a $5 million upgrade by Justin and dom Hind, co-founders of witH collective digital advertising agency. the property has been listed with $15 million hopes through ray white trG agents Gavin rubinstein and Evan williams.

Artistic endeavour The former Newtown Masonic Hall, which has been a threedecade long project for artist Tom Arthur and his wife Sandra, recently sold after seeking a suburb record $5.5 million through The Agency’s Ben Collier. The couple paid $255,000 for the Station Street property in 1987, buying it from Hugh L. MacReady, who ran a furniture business on nearby King Street. The grand triple-storey building, built in 1934 with an inter-war free classical architectural style facade, was converted into two self-contained levels and a basement artist’s studio.

Prestige on the water Te Moana, one of the biggest homes on the Gold Coast’s Broadwater, has been listed for sale with record-setting hopes. The impressive home on Monaco Street sold for a suburb record $11 million in 2016, when it was known as Villa Cantorocca. Built in the 1980s, it was once owned by Gold Coast industrialist George Stratigos and later by well-known horse breeder John Hutchins and his wife, Fu-Mei. Now Sonja Smith, agent with Luxure The Property People Isle of Capri, has a $13.75 million price tag on the property and says it’s an opportunity to own one of the most prestigious homes on the Gold Coast. It spans 1300sq m of interior living space on a vast 3295sq m block, one of the biggest on the dress-circle street. Surrounded by tropical gardens with water features and a 17m resort-style pool, the home has five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a home office, a wine cellar and a six-car garage. A number of outdoor entertaining terraces, one with a barbecue kitchen, look out to 43m of Main River frontage, where there’s a 15m pontoon. The family has decided to relocate closer to their extended families and where their children attend school.

ureka tower transfigured high-rise apartment living in melbourne on its completion in 2006, and not just for its 556 apartment owners. some 13 years on, the 86-level Fender katsalidis-designed tower will soon be rebadged as the city’s second-tallest residential building. when it was built by the Grollo developer family, in a joint venture with architect nonda katsalidis and millionaire investor tab Fried, it was the tallest residential apartment in the world. then-Victorian premier steve Bracks, who unveiled a plaque on the 88th floor when it was officially opened in late 2006, proclaimed the tower would stand out on the skyline, just as similar landmarks do in places such as new york, tokyo or shanghai. set close to the yarra river in southbank, Eureka still holds a place among the world’s tallest towers, ranking at 16th, with the proliferation of taller towers over the past 13 years mostly occurring in the middle-East and the us. Eureka’s newest rival, however, will be just 250m away. as it heads ever upwards, australia 108 at 70 southbank Boulevard will be melbourne’s tallest tower when the last residents move in on its completion in 2020. at 319m, it will be the seventh-tallest tower in the world, but some local estate agents believe Eureka will retain its status as the state’s best. “Eureka took melbourne high-rise to another level,” rt Edgar albert Park agent Gerald Betts says, suggesting the building’s exterior design sets it apart from other residential towers. “the other buildings are just glass towers without any difference,” he says. the design means there are fewer apartments on each floor, which makes it a little special too, Betts says. He recalls that when Fender katsalidis designed Eureka the architecture firm had an emerging “cult following” keen to buy its product. “Buyers wanted to be in melbourne’s highest building,” he says, noting that most were locals and owner-occupiers. Betts says the change in melbourne’s buyer demographics will see australia 108 in the hands of large numbers of overseas buyers – meaning more tenants than owner-occupiers. “Eureka is better positioned, on the river side of city road,” he adds. one of Eureka’s distinctive exterior features that set it apart from many other apartment complexes was its contribution to the streetscape: a unique art installation scales the building. the bee sculpture installation was created by sculptor richard stringer after architect nonda katsalidis saw the original sculptures in stringer’s studio and commissioned a large-scale version. the bee sculptures, made from anodised aluminium sheeting, were installed in 2007, and their golden finish complements the golden glass apex of the building, where the top 10 levels have gold-plated glass windows. Earlier this year a queen bee, also from stringer’s workshop, was installed above Eureka’s front entrance. lord mayor sally capp turned on the lights on all the bees for the first time. the tower was first proposed in 1999, with construction under way on riverside Quay by 2001. the site had been owned by katsalidis and adrian

Valmorbida from the Valmorbida family of the lavazza coffee fortune. it was named after the Eureka stockade, the rebellion that took place during the 1850s Victorian gold rush. the building’s gold crown represents the gold rush and the red stripe on the exterior signifies the blood spilt during the revolt. Elements of the stockade’s famous flag have been incorported in the building exterior, and its white horizontal stripes recall the markings on a surveyor’s measuring staff. the latest of the tower’s apartment to hit the market is a fullfloor unit on the 82nd floor. Betts has a price guide of $22 million. Belonging to property developer Elias Jreissati, the apartment won the Gold award for residential interior design at the 2014 melbourne design awards. the interiors are by French interior architects Fitt de Felice and melbourne-based molecule studio. access to the 675sq m apartment is through a private lift foyer, where a Venetian stucco hallway leads to the accommodation wing to the west and the living wing to the east. there are five bedrooms, all with a luminosa marble ensuite and walk-in wardrobes. there’s also a custom-fitted home office with its own boardroom and a home theatre. the kitchen, which has a full butler’s pantry, 1400-bottle wine cellar storage and its own sparkling water tap, meets the formal living and dining space and sitting room with cocktail bar. Jreissati and his wife colleen aren’t going far, opting to downsize to their level-85 apartment in the tower, the last remaining empty shell. they have commissioned molecule studio to create a more modest two-bedroom home. Jreissati has had a love affair with luxury apartments in Fender katsalidis-designed blocks. He previously owned the Hmas Port melbourne penthouse, selling it earlier this year for $16 million. He is not the only one in the family with a passion for Eureka. 18

daughter sam, managing director of the family’s levantine Hill winery, lives in an apartment on level-73. it is the second apartment she has owned in the tower. she has reluctantly listed it as she is off to toorak, where she bought the former home of accc chairman Graeme samuel following the birth of her daughter. the half-floor apartment, just one of seven in the building is listed with Gerald Betts with revised hopes of $8 million. it spans 300sq m and has three ensuited bedrooms and a study, along with a formal lounge and dining area. sam Jreissati paid $4.75 million for the apartment last year. she was upgrading at the time, having sold her 69th-floor apartment for $2.7 million. she had rented in the tower before buying. the true showpiece penthouse in Eureka, spanning the whole of the top level on the 86th floor, is still for sale on listing websites, having been first listed in 2016. it belongs to entrepreneur anthony Podesta and his wife kerrie, who bought it as a shell from developer daniel Grollo. the four-bedroom apartment took more than two and a half years to fit out. it features the only fireplace in the tower, as well as a home theatre. it had an $18 million price on its 2016 and 2017 marketing campaigns but there’s no current price indication. initial prices in Eureka ranged from $420,000 for one-bedroom apartments off the plan to $7 million. the australia 108 tower saw its initial prices range from $500,000 to $25 million for the penthouse. it is being completed in stages, with early occupants having moved in to the lower levels. construction is currently up to the mid-80s level. the building’s name, height and top floor all contain the number 8, which has traditional asian sassociations with prosperity, abundance and security. the building is likely to complement the Eureka tower architecturally, complete with gold flash. Less is more perception is reality, but is that true of a three-dimensional piece of domestic architecture? this beautiful home and its wonderfully simple and extremely private layout create the impression of something at least three times its value, which of course is what we all want. not just from a resale point of view but as a lifestyle and family value proposition. architect Jonathan ward is calmly pointing out the way this modest suburban home in the backstreets of a leafy part of brisbane “flips the model of the classic Queenslander on its head”. it seems to blend into the streetscape quite beautifully. “it’s quiet architecture that sits calmly in the background,” says ward. Yet the moment you walk into this home you feel as if an orchestra has just raised the roof. the delightful layout with its interior garden and pool evokes a private villa in an upscale hotel, exclusive and accessible from every room in the home, even if access is occasionally only visual. “the home has no balconies or terraces, which may seem quite perverse,” says ward. Yet he quickly explains that the benefit is that it maximises its internal space by not giving it away to the street. this clever system of auditing area has been expertly applied to ensure the owners extract every piece of value out of the home. i have always said that if you can walk into your garden naked then that’s true exclusivity. there is another hidden layer of emotional value in this level of privacy that is always hard to sell to a client until they have experienced it in built form. “the facade wasn’t always planned to be this way,” ward says. it started as a tinted wall of glass to allow a greater infiltration of light. However, in an effort to divert dollars to some of the more important parts of the build, the oversized custom sliding panels were a great investment as the pay-off for a priceless roi. they are responsible for creating the arterial plug-ins to nature herself, not just in the central part of the home but also to the rear garden, which i might say has been expertly planted and nurtured by the owners and their local team. Even the façade was the owners’ decision – it’s elegantly wrapped up in Jurassic scale by thunbergia. “i came back to visit the house

and the entire façade was engulfed in greenery,” ward says, but he loves it and so do its green-thumb owners. it’s intriguing the way the foliage does a beautiful job of greenwashing this unconventional home into a somewhat conservative street. rarely does anyone object to a little favourable foliage. the aperture at the rear of the home looking out into the rambling garden is dramatic and offers complete freedom to roam by way of some rather clever engineering that opens up the void. it’s been beautifully disguised by select veneers of exotic and home-grown timbers. “there’s a lot of complexity in creating the image of simplicity,” says ward. His demeanour says a lot about the way this house is built – he doesn’t give it all away in the first comment. i found myself digging a little during our chat but i liked what i found. the 220sq m of this home feels like 400sq m as it expands its floorplan into the central garden and doesn’t give it away at first glance. as you tumble through the natural topography of the site, you discover the home has been de divided into bedrooms that look down over garden that looks down over living area that looks down over garden. it’s the level changes that create the intrigue and the compartmentalisation, not walls. the huge panels of stained plywood have given this home a very warm heart and the greenery only amplifies that. it’s also an inspired substitute for plasterboard, from the perspective of cost through to durability and aesthetics. the pool fence has been ingeniously delivered in the form of stainless steel mesh elegantly pinched together to create a diamond pattern with small marine-style crimps. ward feels this is a far more sophisticated way to deal with the compulsory safety issue; he believes that glass pool fences are not as transparent and visually open as they seem. i tend to agree and the mesh speaks for itself. this home is not only incredible value for money but its unconventional layout is a great case study for what i call transterior architecture. it effortlessly includes the lush landscape both inside and out in a way that makes us all want to invite Jonathan ward to dinner.

in melbourne a select number of homes fit genuinely into the trophy home category, defined by price as well as factors such as land size, dwelling size, historic significance and position. a number are in toorak, but they can be also found in kew, Hawthorn, canterbury, malvern and portsea. in addition there are stately regional trophy homes and properties in areas such as macedon, woodend and nagambie. William Porteous the housing market has been quite stagnant in western australia for the past eight years. we got out of the GFc because of iron ore prices but in 2011 the market took a significant downturn. because we are a small population of only 2 million in perth and the whole state has only 2.7 million, the market is thin at the best of times. in saying that, during this time i have sold houses for $21 million, $11 million, $14 million and $12 million. all the buyers were from a younger generation with inherited wealth, or were self-made. sales on perth’s golden strip – jutland parade, dalkeith, Victoria avenue, claremont, the Esplanade, peppermint Grove, bay View terrace, claremont, and saunders street, mosman park – have seen prices drop off by up to 25 per cent, and in some suburbs south of the river they have come down substantially more. if a buyer wants a premium property they still have to pay premium prices and for the past few years they have been reluctant to pay exorbitant prices. location is still very relevant and if buyers want a prized site in perth, they are few and far between. i feel that when the market starts to improve we will start to see the mega-buyers come out of the woodwork. building activity in the premium locations is very active at the moment.

Broadbeach leads growth on the east coast Broadbeach is booming. When it comes to median price growth, apartments in the burgeoning Gold Coast suburb are outperforming every other capital city on the east coast According to independent market analyst Urbis, Broadbeach achieved an impressive five-year growth rate of 5.4 per cent per annum, to the March 2019 quarter, overtaking all other major cities across the nation except for Hobart. In the same time period, Broadbeach apartments fetched prices that were on average 38.5 per cent higher than the overall Gold Coast median apartment price. The suburb also smashed another property record with 236 apartments sold in 2018 – the best sales result Broadbeach has achieved since 2013. These include the completion of the first two stages of the $2.3 billion light rail project and a $709 million future stage that will allow passengers to travel from Broadbeach.

There has also been a $670 million revamp of Pacific Fair Shopping Centre; as well as The Star Entertainment Group and its consortium partners – Far East Consortium and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises –proposing a further $2 billion plus masterplan for development at The Star Gold Coast, located on the exclusive Broadbeach Island. “Prospective property purchasers are no doubt attracted to the enviable lifestyle and value on offer, but they also have their eye on the suburb’s consistent track record and future growth,” Schneider said. Developer fast-tracks residential tower to meet strong demand Along with its consortium partners, The Star Entertainment Group has begun building the first mixed-use tower at The Star Gold Coast, which is on track for completion in 2022. This $400 million, 53-storey tower will herald the entry to Australia of the internationally-acclaimed Dorsett Hotel brand – a 4.5-star hotel with 316 hotel rooms, as well as 423 one and two-bedroom apartments under ‘The Star Residences Gold Coast’ brand.

Demand was so high for apartments in the first tower, 92 per cent of them were sold within 19 months. Pending sales, Far East Consortium national sales and marketing manager Lauren Sheldon said construction on this $500 million 63-storey tower could start next year. The two-bedroom apartments, ranging from 71sqm to 106sqm, start at $692,000, and three-bedroom offerings ranging in size from 112sqm to 168sqm are priced from $1.295 million. Triple treat

A new three-tower development has attracted some high-end buyers celebrated architect karl Fender is a bit like the remington man. He likes the $550 million three-tower apartment complex st moritz that his team designed in melbourne’s st kilda so much he is rumoured to have bought an apartment in it – along with other Victoria-based high flyers such as media baron antony catalano, who forked out $30 million for a penthouse. Fender, the founding partner of Fender katsalidis, would not be drawn on his reported purchase in melbourne’s newest “tower of power” in an interview with Mansion Australia. But he says the 133unit triple-tower development, which has been an outstanding success in terms of sales, was a “huge gamble” for its developer, tim Gurner, and it had paid off. “Gurner was following his instincts – he was counterintuitive,” says Fender, adding that the level of quality and finishes coupled with the exceptional st kilda location had presented an “incredibly successful blend of opportunities for purchasers. this came in right at the top and filled a niche.” Fk architects’ lead architect on two of st moritz’s three towers was nicky drobis, while the third was designed by sydney-based koichi takada architects. drobis says the site, which formerly housed the novotel hotel, presented a rare opportunity to create 28

unique residences with elevated bayside views, attracting an array of top-level purchasers. “st kilda offers architectural typologies that span every era and saint moritz is another insertion of a very carefully crafted piece of architecture,” she says. Fender says many of the apartment buyers hail from the pricey melbourne suburbs of Brighton and toorak and the st moritz development was what they have been looking for for some time. From a 24-hour concierge to valet parking, chairman’s lounges, spas and gyms, Fk architects has never worked on a building with so many amenities, Fender says. “the facilities within the building are everything you can fit in,” he says. “there’s a lifestyle there that you cannot find in many other projects. “what is also remarkable is that every purchaser could tailor the apartment to their own needs ... and they are very unusual apartments. Purchasers might buy a really big apartment and choose to have only one bedroom, or they could buy a mediumsized apartment and install four bedrooms. “the customisation is a really attractive part of it, the sort of people buying in really have particular lifestyle requirements. at

the high end, it is very unusual to allow every purchaser to have a hand in the design.” Gurner employed one of his in-house architects to sit with purchasers and work out their requirements. For the interiors, a base palette of materials is offered, but there are variations depending on personal preferences. Buyers can choose between timber or marble floors, as well as any manner of top-end materials. “all our projects look quite different,” Fender says. “this one was remarkable because it’s by the beach and it’s in st kilda, which has the most eclectic mix of architecture you could imagine, as any melburnian will tell you. “we were not interested in a design that stood out and was loud. we wanted a design that sat very elegantly and timelessly in that incredible mix of neighbours. the architecture is robust as it is by the sea and it has an incredible fineness about it.” Fender is particularly pleased with the fact that all apartments have their own continuous balconies, “so not only do they have an incredible aspect and facility, you can clean your own windows any time you like”. the entire complex is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. so far sales price have ranged from $1.4 million to $30 million, and a handful of apartments are still on the market.

This beachfront ‘love shack’ is not likely to be short of suitors it was after a holiday at Great mackerel Beach in 2014 that emptynester couple the Harts decided to make the nsw coastal enclave their permanent residence. within a week of that holiday they’d bought a site in the hamlet, on the western foreshores of Pittwater. the 630sq m block on ross smith Parade cost them $900,000 and came with a partly built basement from three previous attempts to build. adjoining ku-ring-gai chase national Park, the block was once owned by architect lawrence neild, who bought it in 1986 for $143,000 then sold it for $760,000 in 2001. the Harts told architect rob Brown of casey Brown architecture they were looking for “a one-bedroom love shack”. Brown sought to create a tall residential space in a modest yet dramatic way. with a minimal footprint and just 10m from the shore, it is set between a cliff and the beach and is accessed only by boat. now the Hart House has been listed for sale. the house was conceived as a modern interpretation of the classic australian beach shack. “the palette of colours used for the house resonates with the beach and surrounding australian bush and beach landscape,” the architects note. the casey Brown architectural style delivers the illusion from inside that the house is floating on the water. “the deliberate scale of building is about the lifestyle of living on a beach, where you enjoy the beach, the water and the bush and only retreat to the home to eat and sleep,” says caroline casey, who also did a project three doors along. Brown and fellow architect carly martin protected the home from the salt environment with a corrugated aluminium shell. inside, the main single room is the double-height dining, kitchen and living space, which houses a utility pod containing the bathroom and pantry. directly below the living space is the master bedroom, which opens onto a sandstone terrace built of stone from the site. the toughest part of the job was “undoubtedly the construction of the very large and heavy steel frame creating one big doubleheight space to live in”, says casey. small openings to the side of the corrugated aluminium shell allow for cross-ventilation. the rear of the home has highlight windows with views towards the cliff and bush landscape. there’s spotted gum flooring and decking, and the tactile materials used throughout resonated with the artistic bent of the owners, one of whom is a ceramicist. offers are due on october 30. lJ Hooker Palm Beach listing agent Peter robinson thinks the buyer will be “someone who knows Great mackerel Beach well and appreciates that it’s arguably the best location on the beachfront, or someone who is looking for a holiday home in nearby Palm Beach or whale Beach and doesn’t know mackerel well but will consider the adventure of water access only”. the home had been just a few days on the market when robinson was receiving enquiries from people overseas who had fallen in love with the Hart House online. of the 100 homes at Great mackerel Beach there are just 32 on the dress circle ross smith Parade with street frontage to the beach. the strip’s highest sale price was $3.3 million in 2006, when the now dublin-based warwick white, the former managing director of coca-cola amatil australasia, bought a double-block holding. the next highest was $2.7 million next door in 2007. surry Hills-based futurist anders sorman-nilsson and his fiancée nicole Banning, designer and founder of Ephemera, bought high on the cliff at Great mackerel Beach overlooking Pittwater for $1.07 million last year. it was sold by lawyer david maloney, who headed a purchasing syndicate nearly three decades ago. in 1990, maloney, along with monaco-based former speedo director michael Fitzgerald and the Europe-based vice-president of amcor ian wilson, spent $400,000 on the beach retreat. 32

A place in the sun Cashed-up buyers are vying to secure a piece of the upmarket Queensland hotspot the apartment market in noosa has outperformed any other coastal tourism market over the past year, with a fresh record highlighting its renewed price strength. the top apartment prices have always been on Hastings street, with a fresh record being set earlier this month. the record had stood since 2006, when the penthouse in noosa court sold for $8.2 million. But that’s just been broken with the offmarket $8.25 million sale of the garden apartment in twenty three Hastings, one of the street’s most expensive blocks. the threebedroom apartment, with living spaces opening to the garden, comes with access to the communal pool and direct access to the beach. listing agent mal cox of tom offermann real Estate described it as one of the finest apartments he’s had the privilege of marketing. tom offermann agent roark walsh has the listing of the next expected record, back in the tightly held noosa court, where a three-bedroom 240sq m apartment is for sale with $11 million hopes. Facing north, it has unobstructed views across laguna Bay. set on level two of the six-unit noosa court, it one of the longestheld apartments in the block, having last traded for $2 million in 1996. it’s the first apartment in the building to be offered since another three-bedder sold for $7.25 million more than a decade ago. the open-plan living space with bright white shutters features disappearing glass doors that open to a full-width entertaining terrace fronting the beach. walsh says the apartment has a scale that rivals many prestige homes on the sunshine coast. it is one of the smallest boutique apartment blocks on the beachfront, he says. Mission statement in the 1920s, spanish mission-style architecture became popular across suburban sydney, especially in the elite suburbs. residents were somewhat infatuated with Hollywood, which was big on spanish mission. lifestyle magazines of the time featured images of Hollywood stars in their glamorous homes and hotels. distinguished by verandas with barley-sugar twisted columns, terracotta-tiled roofs, wrought iron grilles, arched gateways and exotic gardens, the style transformed many streetscapes between 1925 and 1939. leading the embrace was the architect leslie wilkinson, australia’s first professor of architecture. wilkinson built his own home, Greenway in Vaucluse, in a spanish mission style advocating the suitability of the mediterranean style for sydney’s intense heat and light. wilkinson undertook just 40 house designs, finishing in 1968 with anthony coote’s $80,000 Vaucluse waterfront property, once briefly owned by the actor Paul Hogan. one of his Bellevue Hill designs with subdued 44

Heyworth, the managing director of soap manufacturer lever Bros. resident Howard F. Hudson, of the hardware chain, fronted the consortium that secured the block when it was sold at auction in 1949 for £32,000. cook had died in 1947 but his widow, lady mary cook, survived him until 1950. at the time the annual rental return was £2402. among the early share owners were dr and mrs J.w.s. laidley. through the decades the block has been home to the cobden, macleod, nesta Griffiths, alstergren, kaldor and rivkin families. the ashton polo family were its most recent buyers. there is a current listing by clara and david lewis, the latter one of the three brothers who

Following the example of the national trust’s founder, annie wyatt, dame Helen is best known for establishing the national trust women’s committee in 1961, which raised funds for and awareness of the importance of retaining and maintaining colonial homes. she collaborated with photographer max dupain to mount an exhibition of threatened heritage homes titled No Time to Spare in the bulldozing heyday. national Portrait Gallery historian sarah Engledow described the women involved in the committee as “impatient with obstacles, disdainful of bureaucrats and focused on results”.

the walls around the building’s original staircase are covered with wallpaper depicting clouds in the sky. it’s another ambience to be enjoyed as you make your way to the first floor’s bedrooms and bathrooms. the master bedroom ensuite is finished with tadelakt, a traditional moroccan method of waterproofing the walls of wet areas. it’s organic and made from mixing plaster, lime and soap to form a paste that is then applied to the walls in one go. it’s also antibacterial and doesn’t require much cleaning. against the dark charcoal colour of the ensuite’s tadelakt, challis has added lightness and layering with a decorative feature constructed of italian porcelain tiles. it speaks to her love of working with talented artists and artisans. the tiler was “old school”, and told her “don’t give me anything in plans or on paper; i do not work like this”. 54

challis and her team laid the design out on the floor before the tiler transferred it to the wall, where it injects visual interest with the shape creating a waterfall-like effect. challis says that australians generally are obsessed with house resale values, which constrains how bold they are with their interiors even when they’re not planning to sell. “if a colour makes you feel really happy, then shouldn’t you be living with the thing that inspires you and brings you joy?” she says. “You can always change it in years to come if you fall out of love with that colour.” Human beings are complex, she says, and we’re made up of different needs and desires. “sometimes we’re sociable, sometimes we’re quiet; sometimes we’re reflective, sometimes we’re cheeky. i think a house should do that as well, with different spaces. if a house is just one feeling, i don’t think that’s stimulating for the soul.”

arc newson was just 25 years old and only four years out of design school when he created the Embryo chair for sydney’s Powerhouse museum in 1988 as part of its Take a Seat exhibition. the distinctive chair, upholstered in pink neoprene for the exhibition, was a stylistic breakthrough for newson, who had trained as a jewellery designer, and one that would come to be identified with his signature biomorphic style. the body of the chair is formed in one piece from polyurethane foam over a steel frame, with the back tapering to a waist before widening out into the seat. this is contained within a skin of either neoprene or a synthetic textile, which is zippered down the back. three tubular steel legs support the chair in an insect-like stance. the unique design of the Embryo chair demonstrated the imaginative flair newson became known for and set him on a path to international stardom in the design world. the chair pre-dates what is arguably his most famous design – the lockheed lounge, created in 1990 and produced in a very limited edition. one of them holds the record for the most expensive design object ever sold at auction (£2,434,500 at Phillips in london in 2015). the Embryo chair is currently in production by two different manufacturers: idée in Japan and cappellini in italy. in australia the cappellini version is available from cult design.
