A WORD FROM THE EDITOR When I roll out of bed in the morning I immediately head to the kitchen, put the kettle on and switch on the TV news. I like to know what’s happening in the world before my day begins, but it’s often quite depressing and sometimes makes me quite grumpy. By the time I get into the car to drive to work I need an antidote, which I usually find in music. However, earlier this week I switched on just in time to catch a programme on Radio 4 called The Pleasures of Brecht, a celebration of the simple joys in life and the story of Brecht’s much-loved poem that described them. Brecht’s poem, Vergnügungen, is a list of pleasures, moving from “the first look out of the window in the morning” via showering, swimming, the dog and “comfortable shoes” to “being friendly”. As I listened I began to consider the simple pleasures in my own day to day existence and my mood soon lifted. Predictably that first cup of tea topped the list, closely followed by my son’s face when I catch him watching something funny on TV. I also include a perfectly boiled egg, a free checkout at the supermarket, the smell of dinner cooking when I get in from work (rarely happens), discovering someone has emptied the dishwasher (never happens but I’m hoping my husband reads this), a perfectly chilled glass of white wine at the end of a productive day, chatting with friends, finding £5 I didn’t know I had, dark chocolate, an unexpected smile from anyone, running into a friend I haven’t seen for a while, finding the perfect pair of jeans, meeting someone who inspires me, hitting a deadline, new socks, clean windows, feeling included, cake… I could go on and on, but every day since I’ve identified new pleasures (and been forced to accept that I am a chocoholic) which I would probably have ignored if this hadn’t been on my mind. And that’s the point. We rarely take the time to appreciate the simple things in life but when we do we are likely to find much to be thankful for. I’m still going to watch the news, I want to be socially and politically aware, but I’m determined to acknowledge and appreciate the simple pleasures because it makes me happier. I hope you can make a list and that it gives you lots to be thankful for, especially when the news gets you down. I wonder how many lists begin with a perfect cup of tea!

BRAMFORD FLOWER SHOW Well that’s the flower show over for another year and what a lovely show it was. Thank-you very much to all the entrants, congratulations to all the winners of the cups and thank-you to the viewers who came for a look when we opened the doors. Perhaps I should say thank-you to the rain for falling at a very opportune moment for us, but not good for the fete. Also a very big thank-you to Brenda, Nick and June for their help. I look forward to seeing you all again next year. Maureen Renton
REASONABLY PRICED TRANSPORT IN YOUR COMMUNITY We urgently need volunteer drivers to keep our much-valued services operating. BSEVC Connecting Communities provides reasonably priced transport for those wishing to travel, and who for whatever reasons are unable to access public transport near their homes. Often in more rural locations public transport is so infrequent that it’s not possible to get to and from appointments, work or schools at the necessary times, or where there are bus stops and train stations they may not be within the passenger’s walking capacity. Our chief aims are to prevent people from becoming isolated in their homes and to offer them the opportunity to be independent, not totally reliant on their families and friends. All our services are available by just ringing our office in Stowmarket to book a journey. We have four fully accessible vehicles which cover Mid Suffolk and Ipswich/Kesgrave areas. We also operate a community car service. Most of the cars used are owner drivers. We are totally reliant on volunteer drivers to keep our services running. With more volunteer drivers we can take more passengers to hospital appointments, clinical appointments, day centres, social clubs, shopping, and visiting relatives and friends. We have a number of care home and shop staff who rely on us to get them to and from work. We also have passengers who use us regularly to get to pick up points for public transport. The office staff in our Stowmarket base will be pleased to give more information on full fare structures and the registration procedure along with how to book journeys. Francesca, also in our Stowmarket office, will be so grateful to hear from any prospective volunteers and will be able to give you all the information you need to apply to join us. We know from passengers’ comments that we provide a necessary, much loved and much valued service, and for us and our volunteers this is very rewarding and satisfying. TREASURER NEEDED FOR COMMUNITY PUB The Duke of Marlborough in Somersham is a community-owned and professionally run business. Since opening two years ago, the pub has established itself as a great little destination for food and drink, and now draws people from all over Suffolk. Alongside a full-time manager and chef, and a number of additional paid kitchen and waiting staff, our wonderful local volunteers help out in many ways – you will see them on the bar and in the garden, for example. More volunteers are always very welcome so do get in touch if you might have an hour or two to spare each week. The running of the pub is overseen by a 10-person steering committee which includes five directors. One of the key roles is that of treasurer whose job is to oversee the financial management of the pub. This mainly involves monitoring the financial performance via the Xero accounting system and approving invoices and the payroll. The treasurer also chairs the finance committee which meets monthly and reports back to the full committee. Much of the day-to-day activity is done by a very able book-keeper, and preparation of the annual accounts is undertaken by a firm of external accountants that also acts as the interface to HMRC and NEST, so the workload is not that onerous. We are seeking a new treasurer to take over this voluntary role. This would ideally be someone with experience of small business accounting and may well suit a local retired person who wants to get more involved in the local community, and has an interest in reviving rural pubs. The treasurer is normally a full committee member, which would result in attendance at two evening meetings per month, but it would be possible to just sit on the finance committee (one meeting per month) if they did not want too much involvement in the broader management of the pub. For further information and to express possible interest please contact the steering committee chair David Thorne at: david.j.thorne01@btinternet.com The Duke of Marlborough is open Wednesday to Sunday from noon. www.thedukeofmarlborough.com / 01473 831283
GIPPING VALLEY COUNTY & BLAKENHAM DISTRICT COUNCILLOR JOHN FIELD Cuts to Subsidised Bus Routes Suffolk County Council has announced that, in a bid to save £340,000, 23 subsidised bus routes will no longer be funded. This is over a third of subsidised bus routes in the county. The council will be engaging with bus operators to determine if they can continue to run the routes. Details of which routes will be affected can be found at: www.suffolkonboard.com We will lose the 88 Sunday service. Cut to Health Visitor Numbers? It was reported in The Guardian and Observer that Suffolk County Council is planning to make savings of £1million by dramatically reducing the number of health visitors. These plans have not been shared with councillors or the public yet. The media claim to have seen internal SCC documents showing that the number will be reduced by 25 per cent. Health visitors would only focus on the most vulnerable families. These services are vital to new parents and should not be cut. SCC Misses Children’s Care Plan Targets Last month Scrutiny looked at Suffolk County Council’s issuing of new education, health and care plans (EHCPs). They exceeded the legal time limit of 20 weeks in 75 per cent of cases in 2018. Children were left waiting for support. This appeared to be caused by a reorganisation of staff structures which resulted in a high level of vacancies and a need for significant time-consuming training. Scrutiny recommended caution in any similar re-organisations. The chair and I were instructed to write to the Secretary of State for Education. The letter will lobby for more funding for education in Suffolk and in particular for those with high needs.

Ipswich Northern Bypass The consultation about the possible Northern Route round Ipswich has begun and will last until September 13. For details including route option maps, dates for local events and a questionnaire visit: www.ipswichnorthernroute.org.uk Babergh & Mid Suffolk Joint Local Plan Councillors approved the Joint Local Plan for the next round of consultation on the strict understanding that MSDC will respond to peoples’ views and that changes would not be limited to minor matters. The total housing target for our area, the Ipswich Fringe, is 1,881, including the 698 approved at 1 April 2018. There is an additional proposal making two at Barham Church Lane. In Great Blakenham two small sites are proposed, and in Bramford the site by Fitzgerald Road is included. The maps do not show some developments that have been approved since 1 April 2018. This is a consultation on a plan that we need to take back control from speculators. There will be exhibitions in challenged areas so you can put your views directly to officers, but completing the online survey is important. If you have any queries, please ring 07545 423808 or email: john.field@suffolk.gov.uk

NEWS BRAMFORD PARISH COUNCIL This month marks the end of Reverend Jenny Seggar’s eight year ‘reign’ in the parish. We’re going to miss her presiding over the annual Fun Day in future, but can’t help thinking she enjoyed herself too much not to make a comeback at some stage. Speaking of the Fun Day, a short burst of rain did little to dampen spirits and here’s hoping funds reflected the good time everyone seemed to be having on the day. And let’s not forget the Flower Show! Another bumper crop of talented gardeners, crafters, bakers and artists flaunted their talents. We’re reliably informed Maureen Renton was already working on the categories for next year before the doors had even closed on this year’s event. The council usually take a break in August before gearing themselves up for ‘budget’ season, where plans are made for spending in the 2020/21 financial year. However, the new, long-awaited Joint Local Plan, detailing the allocation of future housing, is out for consultation so it looks like a busy summer after all. We’ll leave you this time round with a few memories of the Fun Day and Flower Show…
SOMERSHAM AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY SHOP The Playing Field, Princes Gardens, Somersham /
01473 833416
OPENING TIMES Monday to Friday: 8am-6pm / Saturdays: 9am-1pm A COMMUNITY SHOP FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND RUN BY THE LOCAL COMMUNITY A happy buzz of conversation filled the shop at our anniversary coffee morning in early July, when we were pleased to be able to thank customers and volunteers who support us throughout the year. Sue, Mary and Wheaten Mill did us proud with their generous donations of home-made cakes for the occasion. The raffle prize of a well-filled hamper was won by Cheryl with ticket 147 being drawn. Mary’s husband Nick also deserves a round of applause for having created and put up a new sign – it’s already having an effect on the number of passing customers who would not otherwise be aware of us. Our volunteers do so much more than work in the shop and we thank all the unsung volunteers who do various jobs without praise or recognition. Also the management team who organise the daily running of the shop and make it all appear so easy. It takes many people to keep the community shop such an active, lively and wellstocked facility for our locality and we are so grateful to all those committed people who do so much for our community, and to the customers without whom it couldn’t happen. No doubt this community spirit will be evident for Lucy’s Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday 27 September from 10am-2pm. Delicious cakes, hot drinks, a raffle with lots of different prizes and good company will be the order of the day, so do make a date for the diary and come along and give support to such a good cause. We are so fortunate to have a local shop, especially as so many villages are now without one of any kind. We are also at the forefront of today’s conservation concerns; very little plastic is used, recycling is a big part of our ethos, many of the fresh products are sourced locally, and using the shop cuts down on travel miles and the carbon footprint. As you can see, we are most proud to have been working so well over the past seven years. It is, of course, all down to our very much appreciated volunteers and customers. We look forward to seeing everybody in the shop during the next year of trading and keeping up a valuable social asset for all as we go towards our next anniversary.
RIVER GIPPING TRUST Progress on the new/restored foot bridge just above Baylham continues behind the scene. The trust is putting together a £20,000 grant application which we are aiming to submit in September. The funds are for the design, construction and delivery to site only, as trust volunteers plan to install the bridge on site. Realistically, completion is a couple of years away unless we can secure funds earlier. The trust would be happy to consider giving naming rights to a company or person sponsoring the bridge. If interested in sponsoring the bridge please phone the trust on 033 038 08531 or email our chairman, Brian Annis: chairman@rivergippingtrust.org.uk It’s good to see many walkers along the river pulling, snapping and stomping the alien Himalayan Balsam. The trust pulled up thousands of the plants last year, and there do seem to be fewer this year, although sadly still too many. Facebook: River Gipping Trust / www.rivergippingtrust.org.uk

STOWMARKET & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB Stowmarket and District Flower Club committee is pictured celebrating their Diamond Jubilee at Woolpit Village Hall on June 15. Seventy-six members and guests enjoyed a delicious three course meal, followed by an entertaining demonstration by national demonstrator Nick Grounds from Wisbech. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 25 September with Adele Kent from Norwich, whose demonstration is entitled I’ve Got a Little List. Have a lovely summer!
SOMERSHAM WI August is a month off for the WI, but we start again on 16 September where we will be joined by Zelda from Viking Stained Glass in Needham Market. We are hoping that our guest speaker on 21 October doesn’t bring his animals with him as he’s an elephant keeper at Whipsnade Zoo. Not entirely sure that the village hall would cope! Ben Abbott should be a fascinating guest and it’s not often that we get such pedigree visiting Suffolk. Unfortunately we aren’t allowed under-18s at our Women’s Institute meetings as I’m sure some kids would love to come. If this interests you, do come along as a guest; it’s only £4 including a cuppa. Our windmill in the village hall is up until the end of September and our members are busy travelling around Suffolk seeing all the other WI windmills and filling up our ‘passport’. www.somershamwi.wordpress.com www.facebook.com/SomershamWI

The two-wood singles finished first, resulting in a tied game at the end of 21 ends so an extra end had to be played. Unfortunately, despite a close wood from our player, the Margaret Catchpole player just managed to sneak inside with her final wood to snatch the game.
All ticket proceeds go to Prevent Breast Cancer, the only UK breast cancer charity researching how to predict, prevent and protect future generations from developing breast cancer.
BRAMFORD TENNIS CLUB At the time of writing Wimbledon is in full flow with the winners yet to be decided. I was fortunate to be there on the second Tuesday and saw some great on court action. Wimbledon is a fantastic experience, but tickets can be hard to come by. However, if you become a member of a registered venue, such as Bramford Tennis Club, you can opt into the club ballot and increase your chances of having an option on tickets for next year’s championship, so why not join today? Cardio Tennis Cardio Tennis is a fun, sociable group tennis-themed fitness class that takes place on Thursday evenings at 7.10pm. The class is supported by music and a qualified instructor and you get to hit lots of tennis balls during your class, giving you a great cardio workout. No prior experience is necessary, and all equipment is provided so sign up now to get fit on a tennis court! Tennis 3’s – Fast and Furious Tennis As we are keen to get more adults and older juniors playing, we run fun Tennis 3’s competitions so on a number of Sundays throughout the summer. These are very informal, but are a great introduction to tennis as you get to play in a team of mixed abilities and everyone feels included. Why not come along and join us and see just how much fun you can have on a tennis court? The next events are planned for Sundays 4 August and 1 September at 10.30am. SPROUGHTON BOWLS CLUB Weather permitting we should now be within the last few games of the end of the league season which was extended by a couple of weeks by earlier postponements. With the league action winding up, now is the time for club competition matches to be played in time for finals day in September. Details of competition draws and league results can be found online. One club competition already decided is the Drawn Pairs. On a sunny and hot day, a healthy entry of 32 was split into two groups of eight pairs each who then played three matches of 10 ends each. The winners of each group then played the final, again over 10 ends. The trophy was won by Di Roper and Doreen Smith (pictured with club president Mike Jones) who overcame Julie Spice and Denyse Palmer in a close fought final. As this edition goes to press we still have several bowlers involved in county competitions – leading the way are our Ladies 4 who have reached the county final and will represent Sproughton and Suffolk at the national finals in Leamington Spa. We wish them the best of luck and will report on the outcome in the next report. Geoff Spice www.sproughtonbowlsclub.com

The triples rink who had led for most of the game also finished tied so an extra end had to be played yet again. Unfortunately, we lost out on that rink too. The pairs rink won as did the 4-wood singles, but unfortunately the fours rink lost heavily to a very strong team. We therefore lost overall by two sets to three sets against. The first round of the BE ladies Hadleigh Cup was played on July 3 against Felixstowe & Suffolk BC, a replay of last year’s final. This proved to be an exciting game with a few hiccups on the way! However, we all showed our mettle and came out winners by 10 shots overall. This was a good result as we played against a very strong team, so everyone be proud. The first round of the men’s BE Bert Edwards competition was played against Felixstowe & Walton BC. This resulted in a good win of 64 shots to 43. This was helped by an excellent 28-10 win by the rink of Allen Tredray, Les Woolnough, Colin Mortimer and David Thompson. The next round was the semi-final on July 6 against Lowestoft Rail which proved to be a ‘thriller in Framlingham’. The game was close throughout and ended with a win by just one shot. Excellent bowling the lads! The next round of the men’s BE Millennium Trophy was played on July 7, once again against Lowestoft Rail. The 2-wood and 4-wood singles of Steve Zarkos and Christian Barber respectively gave the club a good start by both winning their games. Also the pairs rink of Marty Barber and John Parnell also added to the tally by winning their game. Although we lost the triples, the fours rink came out good, winning 26-12. So a winning score of four rinks to one. A most satisfactory weekend for everyone. Jason Smith played in the semi-final of the BE 4-wood singles at Rookery on July 7 against A Leeks from Framlingham. This was a close game throughout but unfortunately Jason lost 17-21. However, he and Jean Taylor are through to the semi-final of the BE mixed pairs, having had a very good win in the quarter final. Unfortunately, Sue Keeble and Julie Witham and Stella Utteridge and Rachelle Barber had to play against each other in the semi-final of the BE ladies pairs. This was an interesting game with Stella and Rachelle coming out eventual winners. They will represent Suffolk in the national finals at Leamington Spa. Very well done to both sets for getting to the final stages and good luck to Stella and Rachelle in the finals. Roy Prentice and Lucy Ratcliffe have reached the Federation Area finals in the mixed pairs, as have Marty Barber, Marian Parnell and John Parnell in the mixed triples. With regard to leagues, with only a few games left at the time of writing, and after a fairly mixed season of fortunes, the Federation A team are fourth in their division and the D team are second in their division. Also the Stowmarket & District team are third in their division. Mary Saunders

SPORT / SCHOOLS BRAMFORD PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP The last couple of months have been really busy. At the beginning of May, the pre-school had an incubator complete with eggs. The children were able to observe the chicks hatching and help to take care of them once hatched. It was interesting to see just how quickly they grew! In June we visited Hollow Tree Farm. After arriving by coach, we were put to work, learning all about a working farm. We planted vegetable seeds in pots (which we took home), fed the animals, went for a tractor ride and planted flowers in the field. We even spent some time on the playground. Everyone had a great day. With the lovely weather we have been having, the children had plenty of time to practise for our sports afternoon in July. It was lovely to see so many families joining us, with some parents even taking part in the races. With another school year over, we would like to wish all of our leavers the very best in their new schools – we hope that they have enjoyed their time with us. New Opening Hours From September we will be extending our hours to 8am to 4.30pm and during selected school holidays. We accept all government funding and taxfree childcare. If you are interested in your child joining us or would like further information please contact us at: bramfordplaygroup@btinternet.com / 01473 740782 Date for your Diary Our Annual Christmas Shopping & Pamper Evening will be held on Wednesday 27 November at the Lorraine Victory Hall. If you are interested in a having a stall please contact us.
GREAT BLAKENHAM CYCLE SPEEDWAY CLUB Hot on the heels of the recent success of the Women’s Tour of Britain passing through Suffolk, another national cycling championship comes to the county with the 2019 National Cycle Speedway Championships being held over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The grand final day is being held at the Great Blakenham track at the village hall and recreation ground on Monday 26 August with three finals for the Under-16 Boys, Women and Open Men’s competitions starting at 11am. A large crowd from across the UK is expected to descend to the village track which is recognised as one of the best in the country. As usual entry is free with hot and cold food and drinks available, and we extend an open invitation to come and watch a world class event taking place right in the heart of the village.
CLAYDON PRE-SCHOOL 100 CLUB Our June 100 Club draw took place on 27 June. The winners were: 1: Margaret Harvey (35) 2: Emma Cummings (4) 3: James Johnson (19) Thanks to your support a donation of £25.50 was made to the pre-school. Half of all money given for the 100 Club goes to the pre-school and the other half is paid out in winnings. Membership is just £1 a month. You don’t need to have a child at the pre-school to be a member. Membership forms are available from the office or by email. Thank you to all those lovely people who continue to support us. We are very grateful.
CLAYDON PRE-SCHOOL Exciting news! The pre-school will be opening until 6pm in September. We are hoping this will help out many of our existing and new parents with their childcare. By the time you are reading this, the summer holidays will be here. We will have said goodbye to some of our children who are moving on to Reception and Nursery and we wish them well as they move on with their education – we will miss them! We managed to take some lovely graduation photos for their families as a keepsake of their time with us. This summer term was very busy for both staff and children. The children have enjoyed lots of fun activities, including their trip to Hollow Trees Farm, visits from different professionals to share their job roles, a picnic lunch, a sponsored sports day and their summer party. Thank you to everyone who came to our summer fete to help support the pre-school.
Pip’s Tree Services Pruning, shaping and reductions. Felling and dismantling.
The children have also been growing lots of vegetables in our nature garden, which flourished due to the lovely sunny weather, as well as growing their own sunflowers to see who could grow the tallest one.
Hedge cutting and stump grinding.

SCHOOLS / Church news CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL
ST MARY THE VIRGIN CHURCH, BRAMFORD
As you read this article we are all busy enjoying the summer holidays. However, the last few weeks of the term were action packed, full of trips, activities, events and, of course, learning!
Priest-in-Charge: The Rev Jenny Seggar 01473 747819 / revjseggar@outlook.com
On July 9 and 10 we held our eagerly awaited production of the musical Schools Will Rock You. With high energy, humour, great choreography and all the favourite songs everybody knows and loves, the students did the school proud with outstanding vocals and strong performances all round. My thanks go to everyone involved including performers, back stage crew, front-of-house, staff and parents/carers for their support during a very demanding rehearsal schedule. It really was a fantastic show! On July 17, the PE department hosted its annual Sports Award Evening. Celebrations got off to a brilliant start with certificates awarded to students in Years 7-10 for Endeavour, Excellence and Team Sports, culminating in a trophy for Claydon High School’s ‘Sports Personality of the Year’. The winner of this special award was nominated and voted for by students. It was a lovely evening celebrating so many individual and team sporting achievements across the year. In other areas of the school we have held a GCSE Art Exhibition, Year 9 Design and Technology students visited Harry Potter World and took part in a skills day with visiting experts from West Suffolk Woodturning Club, Art and Textiles students visited Cambridge Botanical Gardens to get inspiration from the wonderful flora and fauna on display, Year 10 students took part in an enterprise language day, a taster day at Suffolk One Sixth Form College and experiencing the exciting world of work on their work experience placement, English students from across the year groups took part in a spelling bee, public speaking competition and Shakespeare competition and, finally, the PE department held a very successful sports day, with six school records broken! I would like to take this opportunity to thank colleagues who will be leaving Claydon High School for pastures new come September and welcome new teachers who will be joining us for what I hope is another very successful year. If you would like to visit the school and see us in action, please telephone my PA, Ms J Saunders, on 01473 836110 to book a place on one of our open mornings in the autumn term. Headteacher Ms M Taylor
HENLEY PRE-SCHOOL July was a busy month. On Friday 5 we visited Jimmy’s Farm by coach and enjoyed the day learning about the farm. Henley Primary School invited us to watch their performance of Alice in Wonderland and the older children have been on transitions to their new schools and their new teachers have visited us. We had a last day of term picnic on the field which was a chance for staff, children and families to get together before the long summer holidays.
Safeguarding Officer: Mr John Chenery – 01473 742797 www.the-tew-family.co.uk/stmbramford Dear Friends, Leaving the position of Parish Priest is an odd sensation. As a family we have built our lives here, and got to know many of you well. I have seen several year groups go right the way through the primary school and some of those in my first Year 6 will now be at university! August is my last full month here, and I have already started my goodbyes. Hopefully, you will receive this in time to put August 4 in your diary – we have had posters up for some time! We are holding a farewell picnic in the churchyard at St Mary Bramford; the church will be open, and we will provide tea and cake. Please bring a plate of food to share and something to sit on! It’s an opportunity to catch up with you properly before I go. My final service will be at Bramford on September 8 at 10am and you are more than welcome to attend that as well. We will have a visiting choir, so hopefully some good sing-able hymns! We actually move to the Rectory in Holbrook on September 10. Another date for your diary; my licensing service in the new parishes will be on September 25 at 7.30pm at All Saints Holbrook. I would appreciate it if you would let me know whether you will be coming – these are usually magnificent services, and a good chance for you all to fill in the new parishes about what they have taken on! Now back to domestic matters at Bramford Benefice. The pattern of services will have changed slightly this month to accommodate holidays. Please look carefully before you commit to a service! We are going to keep that pattern of services during the vacancy to ensure that we can find adequate cover. We had a lovely group of clergy covering services during my study leave, and I really hope that they will continue to support you during the vacancy. My last piece for the parish magazines will give you contact details for pastoral matters including what to do about baptisms, weddings and funerals. CHURCH NEWS SOMERSHAM BAPTIST CHURCH Workers and Worshippers The summer holidays seem to arrive sooner each year. I wonder why that might be. I can’t believe it’s an age thing, surely not! But the rest is certainly welcome from work, study and the duties of everyday life.

Baptisms, marriages and funerals by arrangement with the minister, who will also arrange Holy Communion for the housebound. Sunday 10.30-11.30am*: Morning Worship with Holy Communion every third Sunday
We are designed to work, but we are commanded to rest. To follow God’s creation example, resting one day after six days work. In reading the Bible you discover that rest is built into life. It introduces night times for sleep, a weekly Sabbath rest, five Old Testament annual festivals with days of rest from work at the beginning and the end. Jesus promises rest to his followers, ‘Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest’ (Matthew 11:28f). There is a final eternal rest promised for all God’s people. Enjoy the summer holiday; I hope you can rest and return refreshed. But remember that we are not only workers, we are worshippers too. Postholiday blues are a common experience. Living for the holidays is a form of worship. Only if our worship is focused on Jesus is worship truly refreshing because in him is eternal life. The worshipper of Jesus enjoys a refreshing taste of eternal life to come, the best of holidays lies ahead. You are also welcome to join our regular meetings of worship and fellowship: Sunday 10-10.30am: Prayer and Share 10.45-11.15am: Bible Study (Communion on the first Sunday) 11.30am-12.30pm: Worship Service Refreshments are served between meetings; come when you can and leave when you want.
10.30-11.30am: Lighthouse Club for ages 5+ (term time only). Come and go as you please. This is not a service but our minister usually joins us (once a month; please check diary). Monday 2-3pm: Bible Study, an informal look at issues that those present wish to discuss (every third Monday) Tuesday 2-3pm*: Network/MWiB, our ladies meeting, but gentlemen are always welcome (second and fourth Tuesdays from October-April and second Tuesday from May-September) Wednesday 10am-noon: Computer Club (term time only) Thursday 3-3.30pm*: United Service (very informal) at Cherryfields (first Thursday) Saturday 10-11am: Coffee Morning at the Methodist Church or at Cherryfields (see below / third Saturday of month) *followed by tea/coffee
