A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
NEWS
So football season has ended! I’m not exactly a fanatic, but since Jack started playing our weekends are planned around his fixtures (insofar as we ever have a plan). I have spent many, many, many cold and blustery mornings on the sidelines since last September and now it’s getting a little warmer, it all stops and cricket takes over! I propose a swap; winter cricket and summer football. Perhaps I’ll start a petition. Camogie (women’s version of hurling) was always my game, but it’s interesting being the parent rather than the player. Mostly I just want Jack to be safe, but a win always makes for a better weekend. When we lose, the post-match analysis goes on and on and on... Every move, every injury, every tiny transgression is discussed adinfinitum and then re-enacted just to prove the point. I feign interest, but usually I’m more focused on defrosting my fingers and toes. All that aside I will miss my Saturday mornings with the mums and dads who turn up whatever the weather. We’ve become quite good friends, as have the boys, and it’s fun to spend time with people who share a common interest, some more vocally than others! I suppose that’s why I get so many submissions from groups and clubs eager to welcome visitors or participants, and I hope those of you looking to connect with others find what you need within these pages. For some the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat may suffice, while others might want to find a new hobby or try a new activity. Getting fit might be your priority or you may want to expand your knowledge of a particular subject by attending talks and demonstrations. Finding people with a similar mind-set, who share your interest and welcome you with open arms is, and I mean this sincerely, life-changing. I’ve seen it happen with my mum. She started playing bridge about five years ago and has made so many new friends as a result. In the last two years she lost one of her best friends to cancer and another moved away to live near her family. Without her bridge ‘gang’ mum would be lost and just as they have supported her through difficult times, she has supported them. If you’re feeling a bit isolated or lonely, I hope you find someone or something in the following pages which encourages you to reach out. And if you know someone who would enjoy or benefit from an opportunity to get out and about, perhaps you could be the one who makes it happen. As I could now that my Saturday mornings are mine again for a little while.

People across Suffolk are being asked to help stop Parkinson’s for good by joining their local Walk for Parkinson’s event at Glemham Hall on Sunday 9 June. The Glemham Hall Walk for Parkinson’s event is one of 45 across the UK set to raise over £600,000 for charity Parkinson’s UK’s pioneering research to find better treatments and a cure for the condition. At this family friendly event distances for walkers include a 1.5-mile, 3.5-mile or 5.5-mile route around the beautiful grounds of Glemham Hall. One in 37 of us will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s in our lifetime. This neurological condition affects people of all ages and has over 40 symptoms including tremor, loss of mobility and dementia. Over the past four years Walk for Parkinson’s fundraisers have raised over £1.5 million for Parkinson’s UK’s pioneering research to find a cure – and the charity believes that scientists could now be on the verge of a major breakthrough. Dave Clark, Sky Sports Presenter and Champion of Walking for Parkinson’s UK, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2011 at the age of 44. Dave is a keen walker himself and he’s encouraging people to sign up to the walk at Glemham Hall. He said: “Parkinson’s UK’s pioneering research gives me hope that we will find a cure for this brutal condition, and we’re now on the verge of major research breakthroughs that could end Parkinson’s for good. “So whatever your age or ability, please sign-up to Walk for Parkinson’s at Glemham Hall and be part of the final push to find a cure.” The registration fee for the event is £12 for adults and £5 for under-16s, with team discounts available. Everyone who registers will receive a free Parkinson’s UK t-shirt, fundraising pack and at the end of the walk, a finisher’s medal. Walkers should aim to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. To sign up to the walk, or to find out more, please contact 020 7963 3912 / fundraising@parkinsons.org.uk or visit: www.parkinsons. org.uk/walkglemham For a full list of the 45 locations in the Walk for Parkinson’s series, visit: www.parkinsons.org.uk/walks
CHARLIE HAYLOCK IS COMING TO BRAMFORD! Thursday 18 July More details next month
SnoASIS PARISH ALLIANCE (SPA) As you know, SnOasis Reserved Matters have been approved by the Planning Committee. However, the SPA has grave concerns about the amount of detail that even now remains unclear on crucial aspects of the application, such as drainage, traffic and transport and the environment. For this reason, the SPA asked that the Planning Committee delayed making a decision on Reserved Matters, but our views were ignored and the application was approved shortly before the district Ccouncil elections. Planning have now indicated that they no longer intend to work with the SPA, instead preferring to set up a group of the parishes that have a border with the site. At this stage, we do not know what the future role of the SPA will be, if any. However, we will still try and ensure that there is a mechanism so that residents are kept informed of what is happening. NEWS REPORT TO GIPPING VALLEY: MAY 2019
BRAMFORD PARISH COUNCIL
County & District Councillor John Field
In the early hours of Monday, May 6, Bramford lost its most iconic landmark when the Grade II listed North Warehouse on the old Fisons site was destroyed by a massive fire.
April was a busy month with parish and district elections to work for and we now know that May will end with elections to the European Parliament. I am pleased to say I was re-elected and would like to thank those who voted for me and assure you that I will work to represent you all, recognising the divergence of views that exist. Election & Boundary Changes Boundary changes have left some people confused about the results of the recent district council election. I am now district councillor for Blakenham Ward which covers Great Blakenham, Little Blakenham, Somersham, Nettlestead and Flowton. James Caston is now district councillor for Bramford Ward and John Whitehead and Tim Passmore represent Claydon and Barham Ward, covering Claydon, Barham, Henley, Whitton Rural, Hemingstone, Coddenham and Ashbocking. I am still county councillor for Gipping Valley, but Coddenham, Ashbocking, Somersham and Nettlestead are not in my county division. Investment for Special Educational Needs A cross-party Policy Development Panel recommended that the county invests £45.1m to develop new special educational needs and disability (SEND) schools and specialist units in Suffolk. Cabinet approved half this spend in April which will fund some 800 places. The remainder will be approved in later budget years. Children’s Centres Less welcome is the news emerging from the cross-party Policy Development Panel on family services. Regrettably this panel appears to be pushed in the direction of significant cuts. The proposals look like an attack on a valuable, successful service. We all know work to prevent problems always has a lower financial cost and better social return than efforts to pick up the pieces after the event. Children’s Centres provide the help and guidance young families need and a place where they can learn and swap experiences. The single-minded focus on cuts as a solution to budget pressures in this area has caused the Lib Dem, Green and Independent Group (LDGI) and the Labour Group to withdraw their representatives from the PDP. What a sad decision to be forced into. Roads This year I managed to get work done to prevent the flooding that occurred regularly on Station Road at the bridge that carries the A14. Long term drainage issues were resolved and I have had very pleasant feedback that they are effective. Council declares Climate Emergency The LDGI group called on the county council to recognise the imminent dangers of climate change and declare a climate emergency. Support was near-unanimous with 60 councillors voting in favour. The council will form a cross-party panel by September 2019. It will develop policy ideas to help the authority cut carbon emissions on a spend-to-save basis. The council agreed the ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030 and has committed to working with partners in Suffolk to help them achieve the same goal. Energy-from-Waste Facility Suez are proposing that the permitted capacity of the incinerator be increased by about ten per cent. It has proved capable of that so no changes to its design are required. I have asked that the county make sure that the small increase in lorry traffic will not be a problem when combined with that from SnOasis, St James Park and Masons Quarry. Viridor hope to extend the life of the latter to 2035. Fison’s Warehouse: A disaster long predicted. There is little I can add to the comments already made. If you have queries, please phone me on 01473 831306 (you will need to say your name and press #) or 07545 423808 or email me at: john.field@suffolk.gov.uk

Described by Victorian Society president Griff Rhys Jones as an ‘irreplaceable’ piece of history, the building made it onto the top ten of the society’s endangered buildings list in 2017, when concerns were raised about the neglected state of the warehouse. But even recent, legal-backed intervention by Mid Suffolk District Council failed to inspire the site’s owners, Paper Mill Lane Properties, into taking sufficient action to save this massive piece of local history. Constructed in the late 1850s and eventually closed down in 2003, the site provided work for generations of Bramford residents and the recent fire has angered many who feel council officials at Mid Suffolk should have done more to compel the site owners to prevent vandalism and earlier fire damage. Finally it seems, when any efforts to save the building may well be too late, Bramford Parish Council share the concerns of local residents and hope that the current owners can be compelled to preserve what’s left of the original structure for future generations. The new speed-awareness sign is up and operating around the village now. Has anyone spotted it yet? Councillors hope that information downloaded from the sign will assist in wider traffic issues within the parish and help in things like planning responses. The council agreed their monthly meeting dates for the remainder of 2019 at their annual council meeting on May 20. You can find details at: www.bramford.one.suffolk Don’t forget, you’re more than welcome to attend any of these meetings to see what we’re up to.
CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE & CHARITY SHOP On 30 June 16 children will arrive for a one-month visit with one more joining us on 10 July. Many people have dropped donations into our charity shop, but haven’t left their details so I’m unable to write personally to thank you. If you prefer to remain anonymous then of course we respect this, but I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge how grateful we are for your contributions. The shop provides a great focal point for us and helps to raise awareness for our work. All staff are all unpaid volunteers and some have been with us since the shop opened. We really do need people who are able to offer a few hours a week to help out covering for holidays and sickness. Each session is only three hours so if you think you could be available to help with spot cover we would love to hear from you. No experience is necessary and you’re never on your own. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming, so drop in and have chat when you are passing. We urgently need donations of good quality second-hand clothing for the children throughout the year (new is very welcome too). Any age is appreciated as we provide clothing to the children when they come here and also to their siblings at home, plus other children who, for various reasons, are unable to be included in the program. The main focus is for the visiting group who need sizes 6-7, 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10 years Not only will the visiting children receive a much needed boost to their health, but they will also enjoy the trip of a lifetime, taking home memories that money cannot buy! Thank you for helping to make this possible. Link Chair Elizabeth Parker www.ccllmidsuffok.org.uk / 01449 760343

NEWS SUFFOLK ENERGY-FROM-WASTE FACILITY Annual Report 2018 SUEZ recycling and recovery UK and Suffolk County Council have been working in partnership for more than four years to dispose of Suffolk’s household waste left over after recycling. In 2018 the energy-from-waste facility put 266,135 tonnes of waste to good use, generating enough electricity to power 39,357 homes. This equates to a saving of over 64,000 tonnes of fossil fuels and 134,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. The 2018 annual report is now available to download with information about our performance last year from health and safety and the environment to our visitor centre and work in the community. Download a copy from the news section at: www.suffolkefw.co.uk/who-we-are/news SUEZ Proposals to Process More Waste As we enter our fifth year, the facility is working efficiently, so much so that it could process more waste. However, the capacity of the facility is limited to 269,000 tonnes per year. SUEZ will therefore be applying to amend our planning permission and environmental permit to increase this limit to 295,000 tonnes per year, allowing us to use Suffolk’s award-winning facility to its full potential. We would not need to make any changes to the appearance of the building, or the way that we operate the facility in order to accept more waste. There would be a small increase in lorry traffic, we estimate an extra eight trucks would visit the facility per day, and overall lorry traffic would remain well within the agreed number in the original planning permission. Emissions from the facility are tightly controlled and would remain within the limits set out in the facility’s existing environmental permit to protect the environment. If you are interested in finding out more, we are holding information sessions for local people at the facility on Friday, June 7 from 4-8pm and on Saturday, June 8 from 10am-2pm. Members of our team will be on hand to answer any questions and there will be opportunity to take a short tour of the facility. The tours will take place at half past the hour; you will be able to sign up on arrival. Any questions? If you have any queries about our operations, please do not hesitate to contact the facility: 01473 839149 / suffolkefw.uk@suez.com OTHER USEFUL CONTACTS To book a visit: 01473 839149 / suffolkefw.uk@suez.com Environment Agency: 0800 807 060 SUEZ Communities Trust: 01454 262910

SOMERSHAM AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY SHOP The Playing Field, Princes Gardens, Somersham /
01473 833416
OPENING TIMES Monday to Friday: 8am-6pm / Saturdays: 9am-1pm A COMMUNITY SHOP FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND RUN BY THE LOCAL COMMUNITY We are now able to offer locally grown tomatoes to our customers. They are quite delicious and sell out quickly. These, together with local eggs and honey, all come from within walking distance of our premises. We also offer cakes, juices, pies, cheeses, meat and vegetables, all produced within Suffolk. What an excellent way to protect the environment, give employment to local people and help the local economy to thrive. You may have noticed the Village Diary in the Coffee Corner. It’s there for all to use and not only helps keep everybody informed about what’s going on, but also helps avoid date clashes which impact on attendance. There are many events to look forward to in the summer months. Our huge thanks go to the Golden Link who made a magnificent donation of £200 to the shop. We are most grateful to them for this very generous contribution and the money will be used wisely for upkeep. We have very much enjoyed their company every other Tuesday and look forward to seeing them in the future. Petrolheads are going strong on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month, and now Pat has started a Knit and Natter group which takes place every other Tuesday between 1 and 3pm. Come along to any or all of these groups in our Coffee Corner and meet others who share the same interests. We also support many other local groups and organisations by, for instance, advertising their events and selling tickets and we are always grateful that they support us in turn. A date for the diary is Saturday, July 6 when we are offering a hot or cold drink and biscuits to all our customers. This is to celebrate the seventh anniversary of our opening. It has been lovely for our locality to have such a friendly and useful village shop and it’s all thanks to the people in the community, volunteers and customers. So have a cup of something with us as a thank you to all. We look forward to our eighth year of trading and the shop continuing to be the success it is. Without community support it just wouldn’t happen. During the summer months we are very hopeful that there are some students, or anybody with a bit of time to spare, who will be able to help out by volunteering over the holiday period as many of our regular volunteers take their holiday breaks. It’s good fun, gives experience which is good for putting on CVs, and is an opportunity to meet lots of people at the same time. If you think you could volunteer, either for personal interest or to gain experience, we will be very happy to see you. And don’t forget our other services which include dry cleaning, newspapers, Coffee Corner, book exchange and deliveries to those with mobility problems. There’s lots to offer from our local shop. We look forward to seeing you. Management Team: Lucy Barrett – 831890; Sue Browne – 831321; Stephen Bullard; Janet Hodge – 832296; Peter Jousiffe; Anne MacFadyen – 831288

NEWS / OUT & ABOUT BARHAM & CLAYDON SURGERY Patient Participation Group news The surgery’s Patient Participation Group (PPG) is pleased to share some good news with our local community. In January we were made aware of a potential grant source, the PPG Pound Fund from Suffolk Community Foundation. An aim of this fund is “to improve health, wellbeing and knowledge of patients to develop self-care and prevention”. We promptly submitted a request to fund the purchase of a set of Resus mannequins to facilitate basic life-saving skills courses. Our application was successful. The Resus mannequins have now been purchased and several members of the PPG eagerly volunteered to be guinea pigs at the first training session. Under the expert tutorship of Dr Cheshire, we were shown how to perform CPR should a family member, friend or indeed a stranger in the street suffer a collapse and be in urgent need of this procedure. The photo shows our PPG Chair being guided in the process by Dr Cheshire while other participants watch on. The surgery will be arranging further training sessions at the surgery. We hope that many readers of this article will be interested in undertaking this training which comes highly recommended by those participating in the first training session. This knowledge could prove to be the critical intervention while professional help is on the way. It is also the ultimate ‘self-less training’ as trained individuals can only perform this technique on anyone other than themselves! Please look out for information on future training sessions at the surgery or alternatively contact the surgery direct to notify your interest. We are grateful to Suffolk Community Foundation for their generosity in funding this project. John Whitehead, Chair of PPG, The Barham & Claydon Surgery
BRAMFORD COFFEE MORNING This month’s coffee morning is on Saturday 15 June in Bramford Methodist Church between 10 and 11am. We hope to see you there.

OUT & ABOUT ORWELL PROBUS CLUB We meet for lunch at Ipswich Sports Club on Henley Road on the second Thursday of each month and usually a speaker entertains us afterwards. Probus clubs provide an opportunity for active retired or semi-retired gentlemen to attend regular meetings and enjoy the camaraderie of likeminded people who appreciate similar interests. We have social events, outings and holidays which, of course, include spouses, partners and friends. If you think Orwell Probus Club could be for you, please contact our secretary, Chris Flint, for further details: 01473 226996 / mailto@1878.me.uk
BRAMFORD WI Our next meeting is in the Loraine Victory Hall on Monday, June 10 at 7.30pm when, in a talk entitled Trends of a Decade, Amanda Sutherland will tell us all about vintage fashion from a few decades ago. The competition will be ‘A Vintage Fashion Item’. Please remember that on Suffolk Day, which is Friday, June 21, we will be having tea and cakes on the village green. There will be stalls and a chance to get together. We will be able to meet others from the village who we don’t get to see very often.
GREAT BLAKENHAM OVER 50s CLUB Open to anyone over 50 living in Great Blakenham and the surrounding area. We meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Parish Room, Stowmarket Road, Great Blakenham from 2-4pm. At our meeting on May 8 we enjoyed a games afternoon with Scrabble, Rummy O, Kan-U-Go and Trivial Pursuits, as well as our regular bingo games. Our meetings in June will both have a musical theme
GREAT BLAKENHAM CINEMA It was lovely to have such great support from the community in April for our Paddington screening. I do hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did. The Ipswich Bus Shelter residents and staff were a fantastic addition and a great help setting up and clearing away. It was so kind of the residents to show us their home. Jay and Gareth were brilliant answering questions and explaining the outreach work they do as well. Their cake sale raised over £90. Thank you to all who donated. It costs £10 a night for a bed so that’s nine nights covered for one person. If you would like to continue to help you could sponsor a bed, attend their Fun Day at Great Blakenham Village Hall on August 10 or even cook for the residents and deliver the food to the bus. For further details on how to sponsor a bed, please contact The Bus Shelter at: tiffersbeds@gmail.com / 07769 337521 This month’s film has been voted for by our Facebook followers. We look forward to opening our doors at 2pm on June 16 for a free cup of tea or coffee and to enjoy Mrs Doubtfire at 2.30pm. The cake sale will be raising fund for locally based charity Age UK Suffolk who support older people. Their information and advice team are incredible. With their knowledge they check that people are receiving all the financial help they can to live as well and happily as possible. They are asking people to hold their own coffee mornings, called ‘Chinwags’, in June to help bring people together and reduce loneliness. Please don’t forget to add our future screening dates to your diary: July 21, August 18, September 15, October 13 and December 1. Tickets are for sale on the door; adults £4, under-18s £3. A warm welcome awaits at Great Blakenham Village Hall, Mill Lane, Great Blakenham IP6 0NJ. Doors open at 2pm for a 2.30pm start. Should you have any film suggestions, be happy to help out or have any queries, please do get in touch via our Facebook page of contact Becky at: greatblakenhamcinema@outlook.com / 07852 472082

SPROUGHTON SENIOR CITIZENS’ CLUB April has proved to be a very sad month as we have lost John Bates who died on April 24. John first became a member of our committee in 1997 and chairman in 2004. He relinquished the position at the age of 90 and handed it over to me. While he was in charge he did so many things for the club, outings were arranged and the meals were always at different places with different menus. He will be sadly missed. The other news is on our AGM. We have decided that people prefer meals out rather than outings. The committee agreed to continue with all the same members plus one new member, Harold Ward. During June we will be meeting each Wednesday from 2-4pm when we shall play cards and bingo while drinking tea and eating biscuits. We would welcome all new members.

We look forward to our fete and would love you to come and join us. We thank everyone who has made donations for the fete. As a charity run preschool we always welcome donations (toys, stationary, etc.) so if you have any unwanted items please contact us on or call into the pre-school during working hours. Firemen Phil recently came to visit us, bringing along his new equipment and outfits for the children to try on. We have recently purchased some new resources including play trays which are more accessible for all children. We are a small, rural, friendly setting based at Henley Community Centre. We pride ourselves, on having a high ratio of staff to children and therefore providing the maximum care and learning for the children. All staff are highly trained and continue regular training to build their knowledge further. Session places are currently limited and we now have children registering to start in September. If your child requires a space from September please contact us as soon as possible to check availability. We accept eligible 30hr funded children (the codes must be in place the term before they are needed). Children can join us from the age of two and we accept government funded and fee paying children.
CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL We are now in the midst of exam season for our Year 11 students who will finish their exams at the end of this month. Students have made the most of revision days and catch-up clubs and have demonstrated maturity and resilience as they approach their final exams. I wish them the very best of luck for the future and hope that all their hard work will be rewarded with success on results day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Year 11 parents/carers for their support during the last five years. Students are looking forward to celebrating the end of their exams at the school prom on June 26. On Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 July, the school hall will be rocking to the sounds of Queen as we perform our school production of We Will Rock You. Both performances start at 7pm with refreshments available. The cast have been extremely busy rehearsing and are looking forward to showcasing their talents. Tickets are now on sale and can be obtained from the reception desk between 8am and 4pm. We hope you will be able to join us for a fantastic evening. If you would like to be involved in sponsoring the show, please contact Nikki McGuinness: nmcguinness@claydonhigh.com Our PTA work hard to support students at the school and welcome you to book a table at their next quiz night on Thursday 4 July at 7pm. You can also help to generate funds for the school by depositing unwanted clothing, textiles and paper in the two recycling banks, located in the coach car park on Church Lane. We will be holding our annual Community Tea Party on Monday 15 July from noon-2pm. This is a lovely afternoon and a great chance to catch up with neighbours and friends. If you would like to book a place (for a small charge of £1) please contact the school or visit reception. Many of you will be aware we lost a long serving PE teacher, Matt Jack, in April and we would like to thank you for all of the messages of support we received over this difficult time. We are collecting for his family’s chosen charities, The Mix and Hands at Work, as well as for a memorial at the school. If anyone with links to the school would like to support these, please contact reception. If you would like to visit the school and see us in action, come along to one of our open mornings. The next one is on Thursday 6 June. Please telephone my PA, Ms J Saunders on 01473 836110 to book a place. Headteacher Ms M Taylor

SPORT BRAMFORD BOWLS CLUB
SPROUGHTON BOWLS CLUB With the season well under way the green is bowling really well and has been complemented by several visiting teams during league matches. Once again grateful thanks go to Ray Ruffles and his team who work long hours throughout the year.
The start of the outdoor season started on April 21 in lovely warm sunny weather. The club looked pristine as much work had been done during the close season. The portakabin and surrounding fences had been painted and creosoted, not a small job by any means. The green bowled brilliantly for the first turn-out of the season. This is all down to the hard work carried out by Jason Smith and Chris Illman. Thanks should also go to Allen Davey, Les Smith, Peter Dodds, Colin Mortimer and Mel Driver who assisted with painting and jobs on the green. Well done everybody. Apologies if I have missed anyone out. Peter Dodds, our president this year, bowled the first wood to the cheers of the members. We had 36 players who bowled in the drawn club triples, which consisted of four games of six ends. The two sets with the highest scores were Steve Zarkos/Nigel Page/Arthur Lockwood, and Jean Taylor/Richard Hughes/Tony Turner. They will play for the trophy at club finals later in the year. Thanks to Bridget for keeping the scores on the day. Our first ‘friendly’ of the season, the Peter Taylor Cup, was played on May 5. Although cold, the rain held off and the game was played in good spirits. There were four rinks that were very close throughout, one won, one drew and the other two lost by only one shot each, but unfortunately we lost overall by 21 shots. After the game we retired to the clubhouse for a welcome cup of tea/coffee or something stronger! Well done Sproughton – we will try harder next year! Finally, it is with much sadness that I have to report that our groundsman of almost 20 years, Peter Smith, passed away on May 2. He was the last of the founding members of the club, which was formed in 1977. He was also an excellent bowler, being one of the top five in the club, who also made it to county finals stages.
Club members have already contested two competitions with Mike Austin taking the Sheila Herring Trophy which was contested as part of the green opening day. The trophy was presented to Mike by 2019 Club President Mick Jones. This was followed at the end of April by the Club Blocks Tournament for the S G Mee Cup which Mick is pictured presenting to the winning team of Iain Selby, Geoff Spice and Averill Kirkman. Finally, during the early May Bank Holiday, Bramford Bowls Club visited Sproughton to play the annual Peter Taylor Cup match. Played over six rinks of triples, the match was keenly contested and with three ends to go could have gone either way. However, Sproughton were determined to regain the trophy and finally ran out winners by 21 shots. Peter Dodds, president of Bramford Bowls Club, is pictured presenting the cup to our captain, June Laws. Thanks to all players and supporters of both clubs who made the afternoon extremely enjoyable. We still have places available for our Tuesday and Sunday Open Tournaments, details of which can be found at: www.sproughtonbowlsclub.com
He has certainly left a lasting legacy for the club as, because of his efforts, hard work and knowledge gained throughout his time as groundsman, he has produced a green that any club would be extremely proud of. I know I’m biased but I’m sure that this is amongst the best, if not the best, playing surface in the county. Well done Peter.
If you are interested in entering any of these please contact club secretary Richard Gee or email the club. Contact details can also be found on the website.

CHURCH NEWS SOMERSHAM BAPTIST CHURCH WORSHIPPING AND FOLLOWING JESUS TOGETHER We live once again in times of great political division. For many the situation is intolerable. How should we respond? Jeremiah has an angle on this, bringing a word from God to a people recently exiled and enslaved to a foreign power. Babylon celebrated its culture in worship of the sovereign and dominated the world with dreadful cruelty. The bright young men of Israel were put into the service of the Empire. That word from God was: “Seek the peace and prosperity of the city.” It is a word that will work for us today as we meet people with polar opposite views who similarly feel betrayed, “Seek the peace of the city”. Here are three ways we can contribute to the ‘peace of the city’. Greet people; we meet invisible people every day, staff at the checkout, the driver of the bus, people who in our busyness easily become invisible. Respect people; human life is precious, people matter more than things and experiences. Be involved; don’t just serve your own needs, be aware and active for the needs of others. Though we despair of our country at times like these, “seek the peace of the city” by seeking peace around us.

Dear Friends, I can’t believe that we are pretty much half way through the year. It’s going incredibly quickly. Look out for the publicity for the usual fundraising events; we really need your support! Each parish has something happening, so please go and support other parishes. It’s a chance to get to know our neighbours. I hope that by the time you read this we will have become a legal benefice, a group of parishes working legally together. This should make our lives much easier, and allow us to solve some of the problems we have by sharing practice and looking at new ways of working together. We have hit a time when the idea of the ‘parish’ is becoming more difficult to staff and run, and it’s only by working as a team that we will be able to survive in these difficult times, sharing our spiritual gifts and skills, and maybe even personnel. This idea may not be easy, but I am sure you have noticed that your churchwardens and PCC are stretched, and in some cases overworked. We really need to blur the boundaries, sharing jobs and maybe even looking at sharing PCCs and churchwardens.
