NEWS A combined coffee morning, book and plant sale was held on September 22 to raise money for St Mary’s Church, Bramford. Being the organiser of the plant sale segment, I was delighted to accept the kind offer from Valerie Mather to participate in this extra fundraising event.
BRAMFORD CHRISTMAS BAZAAR Saturday, December 1 from 1.30pm The Loraine Victory Hall We'll have lots of stalls, including a Christmas food hamper raffle, jewellery at affordable prices and new for this year, home-crafted ladies handbags. As well as a marmalade and jam stall, all with presents in mind. If you want to book a table for £8 and haven't already asked for one, please contact Fiona on 01473 461780. Tables can be set up from noon.
PRE-BAZAAR LUNCHES You can enjoy a reasonably priced hot lunch at the Church Room on Ship Lane, Bramford between noon and 2pm on December 1 – before you go to the Bramford Bazaar. If you arrive early why not visit the Wreath Festival in the church (see page 6).
The BRAMFORD CONCERT PARTY
Not for the first time, I remain hugely indebted to my most caring, supportive neighbours, Samantha and Robert, accompanied by Steven Reeve (Samantha’s Dad), custodian of St Andrew’s Church in Darmsden, for so kindly providing transport and much of the heavy lifting, amongst other activities associated with the stall. The arrival of Olive Godbold and John Alderton came as no surprise; they never fail to offer support by donating interesting plants they have cultivated in their own gardens. These were most gratefully acknowledged and we were delighted to raise £58.20, roughly a third of the entire morning’s takings of around £180. To conclude, my very hardworking team and I wish to thank all the very kind people who gave support by purchasing or donating, including Valerie Mather and her tireless team who ensured we were copiously supplied with refreshments. All acts of kindness were much appreciated. Dennis R Page
USED POSTAGE STAMPS I would like to thank everyone who has donated used postage stamp for Redwings Horse Sanctuary. I am moving away but Pat Woolhouse has kindly said she will be the new collection point. Her address is The Willow, Chapel Lane, Somersham IP8 4QE. I know these stamps are a valued sauce of income to the charity. I would also like to thank everyone who donated a variety of items to the various charities that I support. I have enjoyed sorting and delivering your donations to the various charities, and meeting you all. Special thanks to Sandra for the cat blankets and Lynne for the shoebox knitting. I wish to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a healthy 2019 Heather Dickinson

Show dates are 18/19 and 25/26 January 2019 and tickets go on sale in early December. Don’t miss the chance to cheer the heroes and boo the villain in this exciting and ambitious production. NEWS COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLOR’S REPORT JOHN FIELD’S REPORT TO GIPPING VALLEY: September 2018 Highway flooding The flooding issue at the A14 bridge on Station Road has been fixed at last! Years of emails have paid off. Scrutiny in September The county performance report indicated that the review of highways currently underway will include ‘How utility companies co-ordinate roadworks and are held to account for their actions’. A subject dear to our hearts! It said: “this will now have to be taken forward with the Secretary of State for Transport expectation that a permit scheme is in place in Suffolk by March 2019”. At Scrutiny we decided permits should improve control significantly, so this is good news! Scrutiny of Absence Suffolk County Council has a high level of absence due to physical and mental health issues, far higher than other comparable authorities, particularly in the Fire and Rescue Service. I was concerned the issues could be due to the turmoil and stress caused by the many re-organisations that have occurred, the job losses driven by reducing budgets or just a lax management attitude. In the Fire and Rescue Service in 2017-18, 9,260 days were lost in total, 85 per cent to long term sickness. Nottinghamshire loses 2.6 per cent days to sickness, Suffolk 9.73 per cent and Warwickshire 14.55 per cent. Why the difference? In Highways the absence rate was much lower at 4.52 per cent. This is in an area which has suffered much re-organisation and therefore a lot of employment related stress, but absence is lower than average. Across the county the average is 5.38 per cent days lost, a total of 55,014 days. With staff costs at around £144m the cost of lost time must be around £7.75m. A more rigorous regime is being introduced to ensure that all sickness is genuine. It will also ensure that issues are picked up early. Staff will be supported when they have either physical or mental health problems and any underlying causes are addressed. More specialist education placements The projection is that there will be an 18 per cent rise in the number of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) between 2018 and 2020, compared to only a four per cent rise in the overall number of children. These will mostly be moderate learning difficulties, ASD and speech and language needs.
SnOasis PARISH ALLIANCE (SPA) In the autumn of 2016, Onslow Suffolk Ltd put in an application to Mid Suffolk District Council for SnOasis Reserved Matters to be considered – Planning Application no. 4494/16. Full details can be found at: www.midsuffolk.gov. uk/planning-and-building/planning Our questions and comments about Reserved Matters were summarised in a document which was submitted to MSDC in the summer as the comments from the SPA and all its member parishes, giving the comments extra weight because they come from a significant number of local communities, representing over 11,000 registered voters. The SPA member parishes are Baylham, Barham, Bramford, Claydon and Whitton, Great Blakenham, Little Blakenham, Needham Market, Nettlestead and Somersham. As you know, I have endeavoured to give you regular monthly updates on the progress (or lack of it) with SnOasis Reserved Matters. However, as there is still no date for the outstanding work on Reserved Matters to be completed and for it to be considered by MSDC, the SPA have decided that we will no longer do a monthly article. Once any progress is made, we shall restart the articles and keep you updated. For further information, please email the SPA clerk, Janet Gobey: snoasispa@icloud.com
Suffolk cannot meet current or future demand. Many children have a long wait for specialist education or are placed far from home in expensive out-of-county placements. Suffolk will need to develop a further 300-400 places using new specialist support centres attached to mainstream schools, with some new special schools. New Care at Home model Three years ago, the county got the design of its Support to Live at Home contract very wrong. The problems mean it provides only 29 per cent of home care. It is developing a new model of home care and a new contract. This appears better, but I have doubts that the new rates offered will attract providers and people into the system. They look attractive but don’t address travelling time separately. It can be a large percentage of the task. There will be three main elements: •R esponsive: Will help when people urgently need a response. For example, a frail older person living at home has called the GP or an ambulance but is not very coherent and it is difficult to determine a diagnosis. Care may involve medication, ensuring fluids and food are taken and assessment of on-going condition. Later it will offer rehabilitation or reablement to maximise independence. •B espoke: For people with long term conditions, brain injury, recovering from a stroke, or a condition such as Parkinson’s and may require live-incare to be able to remain in their own home. • L ocality: The main service for planned long term care. It will allow local community-based solutions to be developed. The county will work with the 85 care providers in Suffolk. It will not seek to move people between providers or reduce the budget. District Council Issues MSDC lost an appeal to a developer who claimed that they had not applied the new version of the Government’s Planning Framework properly and had miscalculated the number of approved deliverable sites. The inspector agreed so it appears our five-year land supply was short lived. Development is again less constrained. If you have any queries, please phone me on 01473 831306 (you will need to say your name and press #) or 07545 423808 or email me at: john.field@suffolk.gov.uk I do have Twitter (@JohnFieldjd) and Facebook (fieldjd) accounts and my website is at: www.johnfield.suffolk.libdems.org

A Community Shop for the local community, run by the local community The Playing Field, Princes Gardens, Somersham / 01473 833416 OPENING TIMES Monday to Friday: 8am-6pm Saturdays: 9am-1pm Work goes on apace at the community shop. Products change with the seasons and now we are looking forward to having winter warmers. Come and see what you can get to put in the store-cupboard in case bad weather catches up with us. As always, we aim to source produce locally, and to this end we have the freshest local eggs, vegetables, bread, cakes, pies, locally brewed beer, and we are always looking to try other local products. Not only are locally produced foods delicious, but they save on travel miles thereby reducing the carbon footprint and support our local producers. We also promote reuse and recycling in the shop and are always happy to receive reusable carrier bags and egg boxes. Our community shop is not only a place to purchase everyday goods that we need at home, although, of course, this is the main aim, but it is also a meeting place and a centre for our local community. Lucy recently organised a very successful Macmillan Coffee morning which was held in the shop. This was a well-supported event and Lucy says thanks to everyone who attended and helped. An amazing £315.77 was raised for this worthwhile organization. We have our regular Tea and Chat meetings during the winter on the last Wednesday afternoon in the month between 2 and 4pm in Coffee Corner, so come along for tea and cakes, and a chat during the colder months of the year. Make a date for our next meeting on Wednesday, November 28; you will be very welcome. There is also the Golden Link every other Tuesday afternoon and Petrolheads on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month, so lots going on for a chance to meet up with other people. We want everyone to benefit from the shop, so if you would like help with your shopping please get in touch with a member of our management team (listed below) and don’t forget that the dry cleaners pick up on Tuesday afternoons and return the following Tuesday. For a book to read in the winter evenings, the book exchange is an excellent way to find a new read, and the village diary is waiting to be filled with events over the coming weeks – take a look and see what is happening locally. Our village shop is a great hub for our local community and life would be poorer without it. Customers are central to its continuing success; no customers equal no shop, so we very much value our customers and welcome any input of suggestions you may have for ways to improve on what is already there. If you are really keen to be involved we always need volunteers to help and the management committee would be happy to have new members as well. New people equal new ideas. So there are lots of ways to be involved and to ensure our shop continues to be an excellent centre for our village life well into the future. Management Team Lucy Barrett – 831890; Sue Browne – 831321; Terry Fordham – 831529; Peter Jousiffe; Natasha Leach; Anne MacFadyen – 831288; Steve Woolhouse – 831080

OUT & ABOUT BRAMFORD COFFEE MORNING
BRAMFORD LOCAL HISTORY GROUP
The coffee morning will take place from 10-11am on Saturday, November 17 at Cherryfields in Gippingstone Road, Bramford. Tea, coffee and cakes will be available for purchase, and a wide selection of preserves and pickles will be on sale for charity. We will also have a stall selling greetings cards.
This is going to be a very big month for our group. On Thursday, November 15, our speaker, Stuart Hines, will be telling us all about the Long Shop Museum in Leiston and its importance in the town. We meet in the Church Room at 7.30pm as usual, visitors welcome, £3. Menu choices and money for the Christmas meal will be payable this month, please.
The morning is a good opportunity to sit and chat with fellow villagers and get to know Bramford people. Why not give us a try?
On Friday, November 2 and Saturday 3 we will be putting on another show in the Victory Hall to celebrate the centenary of the end of the First World War and to remember the men who didn’t come home. Tickets are available from Kelvin Dakin.
Our October meeting went very well with our speaker, David Empson, bringing his collection of medals and war memorabilia and telling us all about them. They varied from Waterloo to the Second World War. He also looked at medal and memorabilia from members and guests.
We will also be participating in a ceremony organised by the Suffolk Branch of the Royal British Legion to commemorate the four Great War casualties buried in the churchyard. This will begin at 10.45am on Thursday, November 8, followed by a two minute silence at 11am. There will be a display of information about all 54 men named on the village memorial.
Our meeting on Monday, November 5 is going to be a craft meeting with Emma Robertson. We meet on the first Monday each month at Bramford Guide and Scout HQ on Ship Lane.
From 11.30am on Remembrance Sunday there will be an exhibition in St Mary’s Schoolroom from 11.30am to 2.30pm of research carried out on the men and women of the village who served in and survived the war. We hope to see you at one or more of these events.
GREAT BLAKENHAM OVER 50s CLUB Open to anyone over-50 living in Great Blakenham and the surrounding area. We meet from 2-4pm in Great Blakenham Parish Room (opposite the Chequers PH) on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. The building is fully accessible. The cost per meeting is £2 which includes whatever activity is programmed for the afternoon, refreshments and the raffle. On afternoons when we may play a couple of games of bingo the tickets are £1 each. We recommenced our programme on September 12 with our AGM and, more importantly, making arrangements for our forthcoming Christmas meal. On September 26 we had a session of Room 101 led by Brenda and some interesting debate ensued. FORTHCOMING PROGRAMME November 14: A visit from Wiltshire Farm Foods November 28: Call my Bluff with Sandra December 12: Our Christmas Meal, this year at the Best Western Hotel in Claydon New members are always welcome; if you would like to come along to see what goes on we will be pleased to see you. Jackie Durrant, 01449 672690
GREAT BLAKENHAM CRAFT CLUB Open to anyone living in Great Blakenham and the surrounding areas, the club meets every Monday other than bank holidays in Great Blakenham Parish Room (opposite the Chequers PH) from 2-4pm. The building is fully accessible. Members pay £2 per meeting to cover hall hire, refreshments, the monthly workshop goody bag and weekly raffle prizes. If you prefer to bring your own project the charge is £1.50. As I write this at the beginning of October ready for this November edition, I am wondering where the year has gone! Our workshops for October were leisurely afternoons making Christmas cards as they will be needed all too soon. Our remaining programme for 2018 November 5: Christmas Card Making December 3: AGM and Christmas Party
1st BRAMFORD BROWNIES We held a beetle drive plus coffee/tea and cake evening on October 3 aid of Macmillan Cancer. Thanks to parents and friends who donated cakes and supported the event we raised £53.13. As our contribution to the Armistice Centenary celebrations we will be making a waterfall of poppies which will be displayed in the church for the Remembrance Service. Brown Owl Maggie Dakin
SOMERSHAM WI The run-up to Christmas is almost upon us and we’ve had a lovely autumn at Somersham WI. September’s speaker, Sean Hedges-Quinn, enthralled our extended audience with details of how he made his Captain Mainwaring statue and the phenomenal process that goes into it. We even got to hear about his commission for the Kevin Beattie statue at ITFC before the press (if it goes ahead). November’s meeting is our annual meeting where we review the year gone by and elect the committee and president for the next 12 months. We are planning a games evening after the official business is complete; this always brings out the competitive streak in our members! Don’t forget that Somersham WI invites you all to join us on Saturday, November 3 to celebrate World Kindness Day which is held later that month. Free tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided at Somersham Village Hall between 10am and noon. There will also be table-top sales of cakes, crafts and home produce and a raffle. www.somershamwi.wordpress.com / www.facebook.com/SomershamWI
SPROUGHTON SENIOR CITIZENS’ CLUB Our meal at the Chequers Inn in September was again very successful and enjoyed by all. In October we had a session of armchair exercise which I am sure will benefit us all (more comments next month) and for the rest of the month our usual Wednesday meetings from 2-4pm.
If you think this all sounds interesting there is currently room for new members so please get in touch if you would like to join us. Although the club is all ladies at present, gentlemen who would like to learn crafts are welcome. Unfortunately I can’t accommodate children.
We would welcome anybody in Sproughton and the surrounding villages to join us. Don’t sit at home alone; come and meet new people in the Church Hall. The weekly cost is £2.50 which includes refreshments and bingo each week, speakers and meals out every few months. We hope to meet new members in the near future.

CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL On Wednesday, September 26 we welcomed over 500 prospective parents/ carers and their children to our school for our annual open evening. Following a short presentation, visitors were able to tour the school and experience our fantastic resources and facilities. Staff and students were on-hand to showcase their work and visitors took part in various activities including exploding Jelly Babies in Science, French and Spanish food tasting in Languages, a rowing challenge in PE and much, much more. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our 200 plus Claydon High School student helpers who helped to make the evening such a success. Much of the feedback I received from visitors commented upon how helpful, friendly and polite our students were. In other areas of the school, the PE department has had an eventful start to the term with football, netball and table tennis fixtures and a cross country competition. Year 10 GCSE PE students also had the opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills when they ran a successful Year 6 sports morning for over 150 students from our feeder primary schools. A range of activities were on offer, including table tennis, football, netball and fitness and rowing challenges. Our Year 10 leaders made the sessions really fun and competitive and were a credit to the school. Year 11 students have been particularly busy with various activities including a Business Studies trip to Colchester Zoo, where students learnt more about the zoo as a business, focussing on how staff are organised and understanding their job roles. Languages students travelled to London to visit Westminster University to find out about studying languages at degree level as well as visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum where students had the chance to enjoy a range of collections including the much acclaimed Frida Kahlo exhibition. Design and Technology students visited the Design Museum in London which included a hands-on workshop with their on-site designers. While the primary school awaits their carpark we remain busy at the end of the day with parents/carers collecting from both schools. I would like to assure the local community that we request drivers not to arrive too early and to be mindful of local residents. For health and safety reasons we cannot open our gates earlier as students are crossing the playground which is used for parking. Finally, as I write this article, WOW Week is nearly upon us and I look forward to sharing all of the wonderful activities our students will have experienced in December’s edition. Please watch this space! If you would like to visit the school and see us in action, then please come along to one of our open mornings. The next one is on Wednesday, November 14. Please telephone my PA, Ms J Saunders, on 01473 836110 to book a place. Headteacher Maéve Taylor

HENLEY PRE-SCHOOL As a committee run pre-school we held our annual general meeting in October. We have a strong committed team who continue to keep the preschool functioning to a high standard. So far this term we have been exploring autumn through nature walks and collecting natural materials for our craft activities. We have made bread in the shape of hedgehogs and the children worked hard kneading and shaping their dough. Halloween was fun with pumpkin carving and spider biscuits and this month we look forward to Diwali and Bonfire Night. Christmas will be celebrated with a trip to the New Wolsey Theatre to see The Ballard of Rudy. We are a small, rural and friendly setting based at Henley Community Centre. We pride ourselves on high levels of staff to children ratios and therefore providing the maximum care and learning for the children. All staff are highly trained and continue with regular training to build their knowledge further. We provide an extensive range of resources and activities to suit all ages and abilities, ensuring all levels of development and play within the EYFS are explored. Parents play the most important role in children’s lives so we work closely together to ensure we work in partnership. We also hold stay and play sessions each term that are very well supported by parents/carers. Session places are currently available. We accept eligible 30-hour funded children plus two and three-year-old funded. We are open term time only. For further information please call 01473 833848 during session time (9am-3pm) or email Bridget Wyatt, our manager, at: enquiries henleypreschool.com
CLAYDON PRE-SCHOOL The children have been exploring pumpkins including cutting them, scooping them out and saving the seeds to plant for next year. None of the children were very keen on the smell! We have been busy making our crib, to be displayed at Barham Church from Friday, November 23 to Monday 26, and we hope you will all pop along to have a look at it. We held our Halloween disco at the end of October. This was a fabulous event and a great time was had by all. Thank you to everyone who came to support us. During the following weeks we will be celebrating with a Halloween dressup week, Bonfire Night craft and Christmas activities and craft. Also, our Christmas Nativity will be held at Barham Church in December. The children will be learning lots of songs and performing them to their family and friends. See our next issue for exciting news about our canopy at the pre-school. Upcoming events for pre-school children Christmas Disco: This will be held on Thursday, December 13 from 4.306.30pm at the pre-school for all pre-school children at a cost of £5 each. Playing a game of tennis will release those happy endorphins to help you feel great! Of course, tennis is also a fantastic way to spend some time with family and friends and will provide you with the opportunity to meet new people. Get in touch with Carl on 07553 966380 for details. We also run
teams in the Ipswich Winter League and are always on the lookout for new players. If you are interested in some team tennis please contact Graham on 07981 842517 for further details. BRAMFORD BOWLS CLUB Joyce Thompson welcomed everybody on the green for her President’s Day in lovely sunshine with 54 bowlers and guests. A great day was had by all with a format of four games of six ends. The winner with the most shots and shot difference was Roy Prentice. A spider was held with everyone positioned around the green and the winner whose shot was nearest the booze was also Roy Prentice! Well done again Roy. After the excitement on the green we all retired to the club house for an excellent meal of meats and salad with all the accompaniments, plus wine! This was followed by some lovely sweets, and cheese and biscuits to round off the meal. Finals Day, the culmination of the club competitions, was held on September 15/16, once again in lovely sunshine. The results of the individual competitions were as follows: Ladies 2-wood Singles: winner Sally Fisher, runner-up Lucy Ratcliffe 21-15 Ladies 4-wood Singles: winner Lucy Ratcliffe, runner-up Mary Saunders 21-16 Men’s 2-wood Singles: winner Jason Smith, runner-up Roy Prentice 21-6 Men’s 4-wood Singles: winner Steve Zarkos, runner-up Roy Prentice 21-8 Handicap 3-wood Singles: winner Les Smith, runner-up Richard Page 21-19 Over 60’s Singles: winner Mary Saunders, runner-up Steve Zarkos 21-16 Nominated 4-wood Pairs: winners Jason Smith & Roy Prentice, runners-up Nigel Page & David Thompson 31-7 Nominated 2-wood Mixed Pairs: winners David Thompson & Lucy Ratcliffe, runners-up Yot Dodds & Roy Prentice 22-19 Nominated Triples: winners Ann Thaine, Allen Davey & Mary Saunders, runners-up Martin Barber, Steve Zarkos & John Parnell 19-22 Club Triples: winners Peter Dorks, Lewis Smith & Jason Smith, runners-up Mike O’Shea, Nigel Page & David Thompson 23-16 Open Day Pairs: winners Jason Smith & Les King, runners-up Tony Fisher & Chris Illman 18-13 Unfortunately, with all the fantastic weather we had during the season, the closing of the green on September 23 ended with a very damp squib. As only nine people turned up in the rain it was decided to abandon the day. Oh well, there’s always next season to look forward to! Mary Saunders

SOMERSHAM BAPTIST CHURCH Baptist Chapel, Chapel Lane, Somersham IP8 4QE LOVING OUR ENEMIES At 11am on 11 November one hundred years ago the Great War was concluded. An armistice was signed at 5am in a railway carriage in a French forest north of Paris. The last men went into action that morning at 4.20am; on that morning alone there were 10, 944 casualties and 2,738 deaths.1 For every generation the shock and anger of our brutal history invites a choice, to maintain hostility towards our enemies into each new generation or to forgive. Every revelation of war crimes that burns deep into our hearts, every community member whose story of loss and pain renews the challenge, we need to personally forgive. Jesus goes even further than to call for forgiveness: “Do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who ill treat you”.2 Our annual remembrance of all who have died in conflict confronts us with the choice; will you choose to love? I know it seems a little early to mention them, but I am already getting quite excited. It will be my first Christmas as a grandmother and I am already planning our family celebrations. This brings me to the changed service schedule. Because of staffing issues and my odd inability to be in more than one place at a time, we have had to reschedule the services on the third Sunday of each month. Bramford will now have their main service at 9am and Baylham at 11am. Other Sundays have not been changed. Not only are we preparing for Remembrance Sunday, but we are starting to look towards Christmas. We also have a slightly changed service schedule so if you normally attend Baylham or Bramford please take note! Firstly Remembrance. The loss of the Royal British Legion Branch in Bramford has been really felt in the village. We have finally laid up the standards and hopefully they will be on display for our service on November 11. I have had a lot of folk asking me whether our Remembrance Service is still going ahead. Of course it is; this is a chance for the whole village to gather to remember those who sacrificed themselves in various conflicts to give us the freedom to live as we wish. So usual time, usual place, this year with a new, much more
