A WORD FROM THE EDITOR My colleagues and I here at Mansion House Publishing wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of those who lost their lives in the tragic fire which took place in Capel St Mary on October 2. In fact our thoughts are with the entire village because an incident such as this impacts on everyone, and I know you have rallied to support those affected, which is no more than I would have expected in such a wonderfully close-knit community. You don’t need me to tell you how fortunate you are in live in a village which cultivates genuine togetherness. In fact it reminds me of home, a small parish in Co Galway which had a small country shop (Mrs Ryan wore her hair in a bun and knew everyone’s business!), a pub (yes, just the one!), a small, rundown hall, a church, a school and a population of no more than 500 who came together en masse for every occasion, good and bad. Admittedly it’s not like that anymore, but when I visit Capel I find myself thinking of home, as it used to be. Now there are fewer people working the land, children take the bus to school, the hall is no more, the pub shut down years ago, and there’s no youth club. There are few, if any, opportunities to chat with neighbours who wave politely as they drive by. While I’m sure their neighbours would be there in a crisis, my parents often go for days without seeing or speaking to anyone. What you have in Capel St Mary is very precious and if you’re one of the few who hasn’t yet fully engaged, I urge you to do so. I hope you enjoy this month’s wonderfully colourful cover image, submitted by a local resident who wishes to remain anonymous. Thank you whoever you are for adding a little sunflower to our day!

I am delighted to say that in January 2020 the Friends of St Mary’s will be holding another Festival of Trees and Lights. If any organisation, business, family or individual would like to dress a tree please let me know by Friday 8 November. The theme this time will be Famous Buildings of The World. All previous participants should already have received a letter from me, but if you haven’t, and wish to dress a tree, please let me know. Sorry for the short notice, but we weren’t sure if we would be able to put the festival on due to lack of fit helpers to move the trees around. I am very pleased to say we now have some volunteers (other offers of help gratefully received) so we are able to proceed with this magical event. If you require further information please contact me, Chris Terry: 01473 311102 / chrismterry@yahoo.co.uk / or at 2 Snowcroft For those wishing to visit, please see the December and January editions of Capel Capers for full details of the event.
PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE YOUPA FAMILY We live at the property adjoining 15 Chapel Close where the tragic fire occurred on October 2. Our home was damaged too. We just wanted to write to thank the village of Capel, our friends and family for all their kindness and generosity shown towards us at this difficult and lifechanging time. We have been hugely well taken care of and blessed, especially by our church family at Capel Methodist. Marshall, Kim, James and Charlie Youpa

NEWS Message from...
CAPEL ST MARY PARISH COUNCIL
The Chairman of Capel St Mary Parish Council
Report from the meeting held on Monday 14 October. Present were Councillors Bishop, Cowgill, Dimond, Hole, Matthews, O’Galligan, Pearson, Rogers (chairman), D Thompson, P Thompson, Weaver, County Councillor Jones, District Councillor Carpendale, Julie Lawes (clerk) and 12 members of public.
On behalf of Capel St Mary Parish Council I would like to express our sadness and heartfelt condolences to the residents of Chapel Close in these awful circumstances, in which two family members died. We also extend our condolences to their neighbours whose house was also severely damaged in the fire. We take this opportunity to express our thanks and appreciation to the members of the Capel community who have rallied round to support the families. In particular Stephanie Bonfield and Sarah Weston who initiated the support program. This demonstrates the true community spirit in Capel. Brian Rogers Babergh District Councillor Sue Carpendale I very much want to add my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family, and to the neighbours whose home was so badly damaged. I would also like to record my particular thanks and appreciation to Sarah Weston and Stephanie Bonfield, amongst many others, for their quick and practical reactions in starting up the crowd funding and collection of practical items to assist the families concerned. The response from the village, and way beyond, in the face of this tragedy, has been full of the best of humanity. It demonstrates the strength of our community, which is something we should never take for granted or undervalue. Sue Carpendale
The parish council recommended approval for planning application Land Adjacent to Hillcrest, London Road and refusal for three Red Sleeve and Unit 1 and The Apple Shed, Capel Grove. The parish council has no objection to the application for 22 Snowcroft. A great deal of concern was raised over the cancellation of Ipswich Bus Service Number 94 and the impact that would have on our residents, students attending Suffolk One and the surrounding villages. This service is part sponsored and part commercial with funding due to be withdrawn in November. Parish, district, county and councillors and our MP are working to save this service with the final decision being with the Traffic Commissioner. The Capel St Mary War Memorial Act of Remembrance is to take place Sunday 10 November at 10.30am. We are honoured to have Sir Michael Bunbury Deputy Lieutenant of Suffolk in attendance. Persimmon Homes are making amendments to their application for 100 homes off Little Tufts based on comments from Suffolk County Council Highways and the parish council. Scott Properties continue to wait for the results of the consultation on the Draft Local Plan prior to submitting their application for 550 houses off Red Lane. Julie Lawes
SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM As Halloween approaches, please can we remind you that not everyone celebrates this event and to be aware that your high spirited behaviour can be seen as anti-social and intimidating. Please just knock on doors of occupants you know rather than at every door as vulnerable members of the community can find this distressing. Please visit the police website for Do Not Disturb posters that can be displayed in your front window to show that you do not take part in Halloween. Remember, if you are over 10 years of age, you are classed as criminally responsible and if you cause any damage to property you may be arrested. During the summer we experienced the theft of several cars that use keyless entry. Criminals are arming themselves with equipment which can receive the radio frequency emitted by the fob and send it to a second unit close to the car. This second unit then emits the same signal, fooling the car into believing the fob owner is within range, opening the doors and allowing the vehicle to be driven away without any need for a key or the original fob. Please visit our website for information to help prevent these crimes. Operation Sceptre, the national week of action against knife crime, took place between 16 and 23 September. The operation highlights the risks that carrying a bladed weapon can bring, as well as targeting offenders who use and carry knives. Officers recently undertook patrols and executed drug warrants at six Suffolk addresses. One of these resulted in £25,000 cash being seized. Eight people were arrested in connection with knife crime offences. Since March 2019 when the bins were last emptied, 1,427 items have been deposited in the amnesty bins. The Bin a Blade campaign was launched in Suffolk in 2011 and since then 24,283 bladed items have been deposited and destroyed. You can report a number of non-urgent crimes online via: www.suffolk.police.uk/contact-us You can also call the police on 101 to report crimes and other concerns that do not require an emergency response. In an emergency, always call 999. Keep safe and look after each other. Kindest regards, PC Sarah George and PC Diane Porter

The next meeting of Capel St Mary Parish Council will be on Monday 11 November in the library. There is an open session at each meeting when members of the public may speak. The actual minutes of the meeting are available for viewing at the parish council office at 27a The Street, Capel St Mary, which is open on Tuesdays from 10am-noon and between 1 and 3pm on Fridays. The parish clerk can be contacted on 01473 314103 during these times. An answer phone operates outside these hours and messages are picked up every day. Alternatively contact can be made by email to: capel.parishclerk@btinternet.com www.capelstmary.onesuffolk.net GET TO KNOW YOUR PARISH COUNCILLORS Councillor Rebecca Weaver Where were you born? I was born in the Borough of Islington, London How long have you lived in the village? Since 1991 How long have you been a parish councillor? Since 2015 What do you like most about Capel St Mary? It’s a progressive village within easy access to some of the best places in the region, close enough to London though still retaining a village community ambiance. What made you want to become a parish councillor? I was interested in seeing that ‘village feeling’ thrive via its amenities – commercial, cultural and natural. What changes, if any, would you like to see within the village? I am concerned by the erosion of the ‘village’, especially with proposed major development which has the potential of making Capel St Mary yet another dormitory housing sprawl. I hope to see Capel still a thriving village with good amenities in the next 25 years and beyond. What is/was your job? I was art exhibitions curator at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich and Museums and Arts Development Officer for Ipswich Borough Council. I am now retired and do some freelance art curatorial work and deal in fine and decorative art objects. What are your interests or hobbies? My interests are shared between a love of the natural environment and the arts. I like to do a bit of competitive dressage, enjoy walking a Smooth Haired Fox Terrier, a spot of gardening and a dip into contemporary art if I’m in the right mood.

NEWS BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR SUE CARPENDALE: OCT/NOV 2019 KEEPING YOUR HEART HEALTHY Leading a healthy lifestyle will help keep your heart healthy. It is also good for your mind. Here are the top 10 healthy heart tips: • Stop smoking – this is the most important thing you can do to help yourself if you are a smoker. There is a known link between smoking and coronary heart disease. Studies show if you stop with the help of a healthcare provider you are more likely to be successful so talk to your pharmacist today. • Get active – the NHS recommends 30 minutes exercise five days a week so 2.5 hours in total. This includes walking as long as it’s a brisk walk that gets your heart beating quicker and gets you a bit out of breath. The endorphins it releases are also good for mental health and the sunshine for Vitamin D (what sun I hear you say!). • Manage your weight – obesity increases your risk of heart disease. Being mindful about what you fuel your body with is really important, as are portion control as our dinner plates slowly get bigger. • Eat more fibre – great for your bowels and to lower your risk of heart disease – aim for at least 30g a day. • Cut down on saturated fat – these are the ‘bad fats’ that we talk about such as the fat on meats or full fat dairy produce. Try swapping them for healthier versions. • Eat your five a day – it’s really important for good health to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day – start the day with a handful of blueberries in your cereal or a chopped-up banana. • Cut down on salt – however good it makes things taste, unfortunately it is not good for us. Try swapping to the low sodium (Na) salt if possible or even cut it out completely. Also check food labels – it is high in salt if it has more than 1.5g salt per 100g. • Eat fish – at least twice a week including oily fish. It’s good for the brain as well as the heart. Things like sardines, salmon or pilchards. • Drink less alcohol – not only is alcohol bad for our heart, it also contains a scary number of calories. Try not to go over your 14 units a week. • Read the food label – have a look at the traffic lights on the food label and try to pick ones that have more green and less red. Look at the fat, salt, sugar and calories the food contains. Ways to help increase your exercise: • Find an exercise you enjoy doing. You’re more likely to stick with something that you enjoy. • Build up your exercise steadily – don’t push yourself too hard to begin with and then be in too much pain to do it again for two weeks. • Exercise with friends or groups for encouragement – this is a great way to motivate you to go out as it is much harder to cancel if you have a friend holding you accountable (thanks Emma!) • Plan exercise into your diary so you always make time for it. Our diaries get really busy so set aside some time for exercise and pen it into your diary. • Set targets, whether it’s walking for longer or training for an event. This will also help you stay motivated
Potential Name Change An Extraordinary Council meeting on October 22 has been called to debate the question of changing the council’s name from Babergh to South Suffolk. This has attracted comment from the national press as well as local residents. Councillors were warned not to be ‘pre-disposed’ in their opinions before the debate. We shall see. Hadleigh Swimming Pool Work is now underway to construct a new 25m, five lane pool in Hadleigh. As part of a £2.4m investment by Babergh, with £200,000 coming from Hadleigh Town Council and a Sports England grant (£150k), Hadleigh Pool and Leisure will have a new pool, expected to be completed in summer 2020. The development will be completed by Rose Builders and will include disabled access, Changing Places toilet and shower facility, a sauna and spectator seating. All existing facilities, including the current pool, will remain open and unaffected during most of the works. The existing pool will be demolished towards the end of the project once the new building has been connected to the existing centre. The area will then be re-landscaped into park land, resulting in no net loss of open space. Sporting Memories A new lottery funded project has come to Babergh, bringing together older residents to share their sporting memories. Launched in Sudbury in late September and funded by the National Lottery and the council, the project is led by volunteers who love talking sport and supporting people in their area. Anyone interested in joining these volunteers can contact Phil Lown for more information: phil@sportingmemoriesnetwork.com Details of when and where each session will take place is being finalised for starting dates in late October and will be available shortly at: www.sportingmemoriesnetwork.com/suffolk-clubs The Sporting Memories project, run by national charity The Sporting Memories Foundation, helps fight rural isolation and supports those living with dementia. It brings together anyone over the age of 50 to talk about sport and their recollections of great sporting occasions. They use a collection of iconic images, newsletters, film and memorabilia to engage people in conversation, reminiscence, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and, if suitable, a little gentle exercise at the end of the session. Memories could range from England’s World Cup heroes of ’66, to the exploits of the local cricket club. sue.carpendale@babergh.gov.uk
SUFFOLK DOG IS THE STAR OF a NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK A new children’s book has been written about a dog from Suffolk. Based on a true story that was featured in Country Life magazine, Julia Adlard was inspired to write and illustrate Domino the Miracle Dog. After reading that a terrier had become stuck in a rabbit hole under a tree in Suffolk, the story resonated with Julia. She had a similar experience with her own pet when she was a child. Julia Adlard, who trained with Raymond Briggs in illustration, brings this exciting story to life through her imaginative watercolour style. For further examples of Julia’s work see: www.juliaadlard.com Domino the Miracle Dog is available from The Aldeburgh Book Shop or from Amazon.

NEWS NOTES FROM THE CASE
CONSTABLE SINGERS
Suffolk’s first Co-operative Pub!
Ogilvie Hall, Lawford: Monday 28 October, 2-4pm Songs from The Musicals and Old Favourites
Firstly we’d like to give a huge thank you to all the volunteers who made our second Macmillan Coffee Morning such a wonderful success. The weather wasn’t much better than last year, but again we had a brilliant turn out of cakes, biscuits and savouries that enabled us to raise a fantastic £1,226.60. Well done everyone! Now that the weather has changed, the clock really feels like it is ticking down towards Christmas but as we’ve still got a few more weeks to go, we have lots of other events to keep you all busy. Our October quiz will be held a week late due to the Bentley Fireworks so it’s on Saturday 2 November, starting at 8.30pm. As always, teams can be up to six members and entry is £2 per person. Winning teams receive pub vouchers and a wooden spoon for those not quite so lucky. All profits from this and the raffle will be donated to our charity of the year, FIND. The November quiz will be on the Saturday 30 November as usual. And talking of quiz nights, we are pleased to announce we are re-introducing our very popular Curry Suppers and Quiz, starting on Saturday 30 November. We are hoping to offer this as a bi-monthly attraction. Places are limited for curry so booking will be essential. Please ask at the bar for further details. Curries will be available from 6pm, with the last sitting at 8pm. Open Mic Night is on Tuesday 5 November. Music starts at around 8.30pm. Come along to perform or just to enjoy. For more details contact Dave: 07885 963882 Brooke Telling, one of our regular young performers and a real star in the making, is about to release her first CD and to celebrate its launch she will be playing solo and later with members of her band at The Case on Saturday 7 December from 8.30pm. This year it has been decided to start our winter Games Evenings a little earlier. Instead of waiting until January we will be holding the first games evening on Saturday 9 November. If you have a favourite board game, bring it along. We do have quite few well-known (and some not so well-known) games for you to use too. These evenings will be held every second Saturday of the month. And finally, we will be holding our annual Carol Singing Concert on Sunday 22 December with more information to follow soon. 01473 805575 / www.thecasepubbentley.co.uk www.facebook.com/TheCaseBentley

NEW AND FREE: EAST COAST COLLECTIVE Singing opportunity at the Red Lion, South Street, Manningtree A new a capella mixed choir/chorus called the East Coast Collective has started at the Red Lion in Manningtree on Mondays from 7.30-9.30pm. The sessions are currently free to attend and while you don’t need to be able to read music, the ability to hold a tune is pretty important. We will start with some basics and progress gradually and we hope to be able to perform eventually if members want to. There will be training and coaching on how to sing close harmony unaccompanied, which will undoubtedly help anyone who currently sings in any other context, but no previous choral experience is necessary. Please don’t think you’re not good enough. We need men and women of all ages and abilities, so why not give it a try? We would love to see you there and think you will find singing in a group like this very rewarding, just as we do. Ben, Andy, Brian & Keith

MANNINGTREE & DISTRICT PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY The first meeting of the new season was an opportunity for club members to show photographs taken within a 10-mile radius of Manningtree during the summer break. We were entertained with a wonderful array of images ranging from scenery to trees and insects and more. Our second meeting gave us an insight into what photography means to Frank and Harvey, our chair and vice-chair, with recollections of their early days of photography through to present day, illustrated with a selection of images and tips for presenting images for competitions. The Facebook challenge continues with a new theme every two weeks to keep us on our toes. The winning image (pictured) in the Sport challenge was taken by Tim Stott.

The school nativity play is usually everyone’s first brush with the theatre. This hilarious production in which seven-year-olds, teachers and parents alike are played by adults, follows a young primary teacher’s efforts – against the odds – to produce just such a play.

With the new school year in full swing, I just wanted to remind everyone of what we have on offer for young people in the local area, as well as let you know about an event we will be hosting in November.

Junction Youth Club is still running from 7-9pm every Friday evening during term time. This is a club for School Years 7-9 and we have a range of games and activities on offer including badminton, pool, table tennis and a Wii. Entry is just 50p but don’t forget money for the tuck shop! We are also running a small group before Junction which starts at 6pm. This group is a time to sit and chat about what’s going on in the world and in our lives. Again, this is open to School Years 7-9 and is free. We also offer a Life Group on Wednesdays from 7.30-9pm for School Years 10 and up. This group is aimed more at people who either have a Christian faith, or would like to explore the faith and find out more. Just come along to the church and find us in the upper room. The final thing I would like to mention is that we are very excited to be holding a My Job event on Wednesday 13 November from 7-8.30pm. We have people coming from a variety of jobs to share their experiences in their field. The aim is to help give the young people who attend a feel for what different jobs entail as they begin making decisions about school subjects and their future. This is open to anyone from School Year 7 up to those in their last year of college/sixth form. If you or your child wishes to attend, or you would like more information on this or any of our other groups, please feel free to email me at: caitlanmower.opp@gmail.com Youth Worker Caitlan Mower

OUT & ABOUT CAPEL LADIES CLUB CAPEL WI We celebrated the final event of our centenary year at The Boathouse in Dedham on October 10 with SEFWI Vice-Chairman Celia Davies and Malcolm Fenn, our auditor, as our guests. With sunshine pouring through the windows and views of the river, what better backdrop could we have had for our special year. The past 100 years have seen so many changes for women. Let’s hope that the equality we have come to enjoy today spreads internationally and within the next 100 years we will all be seen as equal.
October 3: Helen Garth on Style Analysis Knowing that Helen Garth, an image consultant and hypnotherapist, was coming to speak on colour and style meant that many of us had been slightly more selective than usual about what to wear for the evening! Mind you, we are a fairly personable crowd in any case, so we were interested to hear what new hints Helen might give us. Helen began by passing round laminated sheets showing a range of different styles as worn by women of all ages and body shapes, illustrating the various possible ways that outfits can draw attention to our best features and distract from what we think of as our worst. The range of different styles went from city chic and dramatic to creative, romantic, classic and natural. Whichever style you choose, it’s all about creating a balanced appearance, and it’s important to know which body shape you are to help you dress stylishly. We had to pair up with someone else and, using a small weight on the end of a piece of thread we held the end of the thread to each other’s shoulders allowing the weight to hang free. We could then tell whether we were a triangle-shape, an inverted triangle shape, a pear shape, a circular shape, an hour-glass, an oval or a rectangle, and from that diagnosis we could be advised on which of our features needed accentuating with the style of our clothes.
MANNINGTREE ROTARY CLUB We are seeking your support once again. For the previous Rotary year you supported us as we collected bras for Against Breast Cancer. This year we are supporting East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). After talks with the charity, they would like us to collect handbags and belts on their behalf, so if you have any unwanted handbags or belts please donate them to us. Once again we are being supported by the East of England Coop so you will find our collection box in the entrance to the Manningtree store and Paul, the store manager, is pictured putting the first belt in the box. As part of our support for the environment we also have a collection box in the store for used/unwanted pens, felt tip pen and pencils and colouring pencils to be recycled. Following a Rotary initiative and enterprise on a series of ongoing mornings, members of Manningtree Rotary Club in cooperation with Mistley Parish Council have been clearing and cutting back the severely overgrown pathway on the south side of The Walls, Mistley. This has now grown from a small group to a large number of volunteers joining the project under the direction of ‘Clerk of Works’ Rotarian Steve Coiley which is attracting much acclaim.

This proved to be a fun evening, and although we took Helen’s hints and tips seriously, everyone enjoyed a bit of a giggle and there was a good atmosphere. One item of clothing which seemed to display the most versatility was the scarf. Helen showed several ways of wearing scarves, and various knots to tie in order to create some completely different looks with an outfit. She also said that many of her clothes come from charity shops which are full of surprises! All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening! For more information about Helen, see her Facebook page under Helen Garth – Looking Good, Feeling Good, and for more information about Capel Ladies Club, visit: www.capelladies.com Do come along to a meeting and see if you like our style! STOUR VALLEY U3A On Wednesday 9 October, Jenny Gibbs presented An Englishwoman’s Life in Rural Turkey. Her stories capture a simple, serene, pastoral way of life in a Turkish mountain village unchanged for centuries. On November 13 Magistrate Graham Higgins will talk of Tales From The Bench. He will look at our legal heritage, particularly the part played by Suffolk. He will relate how the role of magistrates and local events have played a part in this history and will bring us up to date with an opportunity to decide how a defendant should be sentenced by briefly outlining a case. He will also include some of his unusual experiences on the bench.
Recently bereaved or experiencing a delayed reaction? Are you in need of help and support? Why not join a small group sharing bereavement issues? Groups are led by an experienced facilitator creating a warm, safe environment in which to explore the many aspects of loss. Groups are held in Hadleigh (afternoon) and Capel S Mary (evening) and are free to Suffolk residents For more details or to reserve a place contact Patrick or Margaret: sbsg246@gmail.com / 07469 201337 / 01206 299832 www.suffolkbereavement.org.uk
EBONY’S BLOG: Life at The Shelley Centre By the time you read my November blog, the clocks will have gone back and we’ll all be in darkness by teatime. That’s why I’m showing off photos of the Pony Day we had in early October when the weather was lovely, nobody got cold or wet, and the six participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Well done everybody.
We meet at Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2.15pm. Annual membership is £12 which entitles members to attend meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. We don’t hold a speaker meeting in December but instead enjoy a Christmas lunch which this year is on Wednesday 11 December at the Ipswich Best Western Hotel, Copdock IP8 3JD. This is always a very popular event so an early reservation is advised. On January 8 Chris Parfitt, a retired teacher, will enlighten us on The Mysteries of Easter Island in an illustrated talk in which he will look at life on this remote island and explore its unique history. Each month The Coffee Grinders meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt CO7 6SD from 10am to noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members and gives all members the opportunity to meet the activity group leaders and the committee while enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 29 November.
We had a presence at the Hadleigh On Show event on the same day and saw many old friends and riders as they passed our table. I got to have my very own poster, which generated lots of interest. We think we may have picked up some more helpers, you know who you are! It will be great to have you on board. Getting cold and wet is part of the joy of involvement with horses, as many of my readers will know. The maintenance team has a brilliant way of keeping warm, however, and if you’d like to find out what it is, do come and join it!
STOUR VALLEY MEN’S PROBUS CLUB Andy Malcolm will talk about the good work undertaken by The Fishermen’s Mission on November 6 and on November 20 Sara Waterston of local Hunnable Funeral Directors will talk on The Humourist Side of Funerals. Our speaker on December 4 is Simon Gallop with The Unknown Constable Country and we end the year with our popular annual Christmas quiz. It’s rumoured that there are some valuable prizes to be won on this occasion! We will not meet on January 1 so our first meeting in the New Year will be on Wednesday 15 January when fellow member Michael Hole will present a talk entitled First and Second World War Prisoner of War Camps. Our club endeavours to be simple in structure, free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs and involve members at minimal cost. The club is directed primarily to providing fellowship between members who are compatible with each other and the opportunity for development of acquaintances. New members are welcomed. We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at St John Ambulance HQ, Manningtree CO11 1EB, 10 for 10.30am. For further details please contact speaker secretary Dave Carman: 01255 880202

Pumpkins, fireworks and rehearsals for Christmas nativity plays all contribute to the rapid pace of the autumn term. Here we push on for our riders’ achievements and progress and everyone enjoys the signs of success, however great or small they may be. I know Margaret will be looking out for a baby to take the part of Jesus at our carol service on December 7. What are you up to this month? If you feel time is dragging, or your own four walls are closing in on you, why not try something new? There is a valuable slot here for everybody, whatever your skills, or lack of them. We horses need help with everything, from making coffee for the volunteers to working a computer, our four hooves do a remarkable job for disabled riders but we can’t manage the practicalities at all. www.shelleyrda.com / 01473 824172

CAPEL COUNTRYSIDE CLUB Our talk on Tuesday 12 November at 7.30pm in Capel Methodist Church is by Alex Bass on the wildlife and landscape of the North Norfolk Coast. This promises to be a very good evening as the speaker is very knowledgeable, and a good photographer, so do come and join us. Visitors welcome. In October we had an excellent presentation on the Isles of Scilly and its wildlife and flora by Chris Parfitt. It was a pity not many people came; they certainly missed an excellent evening. It was surprising to learn that there are 145 islands, of which 140 are inhabited. St Mary’s is the largest with a population of 1,500.

BUSY BEES TODDLER GROUP Do you have a baby or a toddler, or are you a grandparent looking after one and would like somewhere to take them to play on a Wednesday morning? Then come and join us at Capel Methodist Church every Wednesday from 9-11.30am. Here the children can play and you can have a chat with other mums, dads, grandparents and carers over a cup of coffee and maybe make some new friends. It can be very isolating being at home with a baby, especially if you are a first time mum. We have a vast selection of toys and baby equipment and several elders who are only too glad to cuddle a baby, play with a toddler or chat to you.

Schools BENTLEY & COPDOCK PRIMARY SCHOOLS We rounded off our amazing Foxes and Adders activity week with a trip to Flatford Mill. The older children have enjoyed a science day at East Bergholt, a music festival at Ipswich High School, and an exciting Crumble Taster Day (programming robots) at BT! If you would like to know more about any of these events please take a look at the school website. Once again, both schools hosted a Macmillan Coffee Event, and as a Federation we raised £339 for the charity. That was a brilliant effort – a big well done and pat on the back to everyone who contributed to the total. We celebrated Harvest with some learning at the church followed by a service which parents attended. All our donations for Harvest have been shared with homeless charities in Ipswich. We thank all our families for their generosity. The children across the Federation have had their photos taken looking smart in their uniforms, and on November 5 the Reception children will have their first class photos published in the local newspaper. This year we have invited a guest speaker into our schools to discuss Remembrance with the children in our assemblies and we will be holding the traditional minute silence. After half term, we invited parents to come into our schools to see how maths is being taught in class. The children then shared their learning across the curriculum with their parents. We are once again opening our schools up for parents to look around ahead of applying for a Foundation Stage place from September 2020. Both schools will host an open evening and also a daytime opportunity for parents to see the schools in action. The Copdock open event will be held on Wednesday 13 November at 9.45am and 6.30pm. Bentley will be holding their open events on Tuesday 19 November at 1.30pm and again at 6pm in the evening. If you would like to know more, please visit the website or contact the relevant school directly. We would appreciate if you could let us know if you intend to come along to our open events so that we have an idea of numbers. If you are unable to make any of these dates, please contact the school office directly to make an appointment to look around at another time. We are now beginning to look towards Christmas and our annual celebrations. The children will soon be practising carols and learning their plays. Bentley and Copdock Schools will be sharing their Christmas performances in early December. Our Christmas Fayres will be taking place on Friday 13 December at 3.15pm for Bentley and, at the time of writing, we haven’t confirmed the date for Copdock, so please keep an eye on the website for more details and support our fundraisers in any way you can.
Baby Bears Staff in the baby room have been busy making changes. We have a new and improved ‘cosy corner’ utilising our adult chair, cosy blankets, cushions and books. We have also introduced a new craft station where the children can self-select from a variety of craft supplies including paper, crayons, paintbrushes and stickers. The babies have enjoyed having more freedom with the resources they encounter. Toddling Tigers We have been working closely with the parents who kindly donated unwanted ‘real’ resources from home. We have revamped and upcycled many items to create an exciting new learning environment which has sparked the children’s curiosity, provided many new learning opportunities and continues to broaden their imagination. New skills have been developing quickly within our ‘in the moment’ planning ethos which encourages children to explore new skills straightaway, rather than planning for these moments to take place ‘next time’. We are now working with the children when they show an interest and this readiness to adopt new learning experiences has heightened positive outcomes. Grufflalos In the Gruffalo room we are continuing to embrace the Curiosity Approach. A key element of this approach is celebrating the seasons. During October we have explored autumn, both outdoors and at Forest School and within the room. We visited the allotments (many thanks to Sue, Graham and Steve for making this possible) to explore autumn there and the children have helped to create an autumn display using conkers, pumpkins and autumn leaves. Forest School
Forest School is back and we are already learning about what autumn means in the natural world and the lovely colours Mother Nature treats us to at this time of year. Leaf play, conkers, acorns, and blackberry picking have played a rich part of our first few weeks of autumn exploration, introducing new language skills and developing senses. We’re busy planting daffodil and tulip bulbs to see what pretty surprises we get in spring. The babies are enjoying naps in the hammock with the leaves falling around them. Our new outside mud kitchen has been very busy with lots of delicious treats being made.
If you would like to get involved in either of our PTAs please visit the website or contact the school offices direct for more details.
Over the next few weeks, we will be busy tidying the vegetable garden, making homes for the animals in the winter and the Gruffalos will have their first campfire.

CAPEL METHODIST CHURCH An Outer Veneer Under the showroom lights, it looked a wonderful piece of furniture. I was taken in. I imagined it was solid wood, built to last. Within the year, a thin layer of veneer started to come away and soon cracked to expose chipboard beneath. In time other bits peeled away and it was looking a tatty bit of furniture which needed to be replaced. Sometimes people can be the same. We superficially look the part, but after a few knocks and bruises, we are a mess. I’ve just read about a case from a different continent where four policemen have been charged with the kidnap and murder of three Christian workers who were working to support poor people suffering from injustice. The four policemen had the outer respectability of a police uniform, but underneath were murderers. There have been cases in this country where what seem like respectable people, serving in the community or church, yet in the dark side of their lives, committing bad and sometimes criminal acts. We can all think of examples in many walks of life where politicians, social workers, teachers, church leaders, doctors and so forth have been caught doing something wicked, bringing their profession into disrepute. It’s not new: 2650 years ago a prophet called Amos spoke to the religious people of his day about the hollowness of the rituals they went through. They may offer their worship and their sacrifices, but God sees through their pretence – the outer veneer, he knows what is at the heart of these people. We all to some extent or other, put on masks to cover the real self, to cope in a world with the pressures to conform. But there is one place, which is open to all, where we can go and be totally open and honest, admitting our shallowness, our veneer, our failures. That place can be anywhere and everywhere – it’s a place to talk with God who knows everything about you without you saying a word, and he loves you, despite the worst things you might have done. If you are honest with him, you will know a peace that the world cannot give. If there is criminal wrongdoing, justice may need to be done (as we hope for the court case of the four policemen – one of whom has made confession to the court). Amos says; “let justice cascade down like a mighty river, and righteousness like an inexhaustible stream.” The promise of our honesty before God, a stream of righteous acts flowing through our lives to bless others. Acts, not from the outer veneer of superficial rituals, but from a solid foundation of a relationship with Jesus Christ. CHURCH NEWS CHRISTIANS in Capel
CAPEL COMMUNITY CHURCH
The members of all the churches foster a closer fellowship and understanding between the respective Christian communities in Capel St Mary. They endeavour to co-ordinate common interests and where practical share common resources to meet specific needs.
November is without doubt a time for remembering; perhaps most poignantly, those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country and those still in need of help and support because of their experiences in the armed forces. Bonfire Night also reminds us of the extreme measures some people will use to take control of a situation or institution.

I am writing this article in early October. By the time you read this, Brexit may or may not have happened, or some new political disaster could be on the horizon. The problem is that we just don’t know – with any absolute certainty – what will in the next 60 minutes, tomorrow or let alone even next week. We make plans and look forward to special occasions, but sometimes we need to know when to stop, re-evaluate and adapt our plans to better fit the changing situations we find ourselves in. Perhaps the biggest challenge is knowing when to press-in and push-through or when to stop and change direction. If you believe in God, this is a great time to ask for help. Some say that Christianity is like a crutch for those who can’t walk on their own. I believe that talking to Jesus Christ in prayer is more like a conversation with a friend – someone whom we ask for help and wise counsel, or just a listening non-judgement ear, for those times when we need to ‘think out loud’. In the Bible, the Book of Jeremiah records these words: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I hope you find these words encouraging, because they remind us that even when we do not know what the future has in store for us, God ultimately has a good plan for each of us, even when it may not feel like it in the moment. On Saturday 16 November, Capel Community Church will be hosting The Big Quiz Night to help raise money for Tearfund. You may not know all the answers, but we can have fun anyway! For further details please see our website. Every Blessing, Dave Owen, Pastor & Senior Leader
The next Messy Church is on Saturday 30 November (the fifth Saturday) at Capel Methodist Church from 3.30-5.30pm. Messy Church is a fun, new way of doing ‘church’ which is particularly suited to families, but welcoming to all. It is an International organisation run by many churches in the UK and around the world and is particularly aimed at people who have never belonged to a church before but anyone can come. To find out more go to: www.messychurch.org.uk You can expect a warm welcome, an hour of hands-on craft activities and games with a Bible theme, a short celebration with a story, songs and prayers, sometimes drama or puppets and a meal together. Our theme this month will be based around Advent and Christmas. It’s all free but donations are gratefully received. If you haven’t been before, why not give us a try? You’ll have lots of fun. There’s no need to book – just turn up. Bring your friends.
