A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I’ve just been home to see my family in Ireland and to spend some time on the farm with mum and dad. We had an influx of cousins which, despite the constant cooking, was a lot of fun. It was lovely to see all our children playing together, with the occasional squabble as I suspect there might have been when we were young. Back then, my cousin Eilish and I spent many long summers torturing my older brother with water balloons and nettles (don’t ask!). We even carved his name and the name of a certain girl on a roadside tree for all to see. Needless to say that didn’t go down very well, with either of them!

NEWS CAPEL ST MARY VILLAGER OF THE YEAR 2019 After the unfortunate postponing of Capel Funday, we were finally to reveal this year’s recipient, voted by the villagers of Capel on July 20. Mr Bob ‘The Ploughman’ Morrison grinned from ear to ear as he was presented the Paddy Gough Memorial Cup, and heard the crowds applaud him and his efforts.

Things have changed a lot since then and what struck me most this time was how quiet everywhere seemed to be. Our local town used to be a thriving metropolis (at least in my mind) but now it’s a bit downtrodden with a few too many boarded-up shops. A number of big employers have either closed down or moved elsewhere in recent years and where jobs go, people are forced to follow, in many cases moving abroad to Australia and Canada. I don’t know exactly when things started to slide so badly, but I’ve returned to Suffolk with renewed determination to support local producers, local manufacturers, local shops and bars and restaurants and local events. Without our support they simply can’t survive and thrive and ultimately we all lose out. We are forced to travel further to shop, we struggle to find employment close to home, our children leave to find jobs elsewhere and, as in my home town, a general lack of ‘vitality’ sets in which may be difficult to overcome. We may not know what the future holds, but we all have spending power and how and where we choose to spend our money will impact the local economy. Every penny we spend locally is an investment in our community, in our children’s future, in the look and feel of our towns and villages… I know I’d rather spend time in a bustling town or village with a mix of shops and cafes and restaurants, where activities are well attended, where people are confident about the future and where ‘community’, the natural outcome when residents and neighbours enjoy where they live, is strong.

Bob threw himself into village life 47 years ago and has been a dedicated member of the community ever since. He has been involved with an endless number of community activities, ranging from football coaching to leading the local Scouts’ group and much more. Bob is a role model to many and has done the village proud. For all you have done, we thank you.

It’s in our hands to make it so and I’m proud to edit a series of magazines which celebrate community and enable local employers to share their wares. I also believe it’s important to know what’s happening in our local communities, to keep abreast of local developments and to know what’s what and who’s who. So make a cup of tea, sit back and enjoy.

This year’s award was kindly sponsored by Bypass Nurseries, Upstix and Bonfield Brothers Ltd. Without our three sponsors we wouldn’t have been able to run the award, an important feature of our community spirit. This year we asked our sponsors to tell us why they chose to be involved:

Sheila Mares of Bypass Nurseries stated: “We are very pleased that Bob has received this recognition for his contribution to the village and we’re very proud to sponsor Villager of the Year.” Ian Pulford of Upstix said: “As the only estate agency based in Capel, Upstix is proud to support the village whenever we can. In addition to sponsoring the excellent Villager of the Year award, Upstix sponsors the bowls and football clubs, two of the floral displays over the shops as well as giving £50 to the primary school for each house we sell in the village.” Bonfield Brothers told us: “Bonfield Brothers Ltd are very glad to be involved with the award, and couldn’t think if anything better to support than something that says thank you for people going that extra mile. What would we be without them? We wish to congratulate Bob in winning this year’s award, and look forward to being a sponsor year on year.” We were so thrilled to see you all attend our stall on Funday and it was great to be able to take the time to explain the award a bit more and chat with people about our plans for the future. Villager of the Year – Raise the Tree Project Our Raise the Tree project is a separate endeavour from our main award and we have been working hard to secure the financial support we need to make sure our community beacon comes to life. It’s an ambitious idea; nothing is as large as a 20ft pre-lit Christmas tree boasting hundreds and hundreds of lights erected in the centre of our wonderful village. Villager of the Year is a small team of two, but we’re working hard to hit our target and you can still be involved and support us. Our Gofundme page is still live, and donations can be dropped off in an envelope at 13 Tawney Close, Capel St Mary. We have been fortunate to get an opportunity to gain a financial donation from the Co-op green token scheme and hope you all will pop your token in our voting box located by the tills. Above all we hope you will join us on November 30 to see the tree in all its glory and enjoy all the festive fun we have planned. Thank you to all our supporters for your donations and words of encouragement; together we can make a community to be proud of. Stephanie Bonfield & Sarah Weston

NEWS

CAPEL FUNDAY 2019 Historically our report has always started with “Wow, how lucky were we?”, but this year it was quite the reverse. We became the Met Office by constantly updating each other on the predicted weather for the second time in six weeks. Thunder and lightning (we were very, very frightened) was forecast but in you all came! We once again had lots of stalls and attractions on offer including train rides, donkey rides and many independent stallholders. New to this year was our very own celebrity pony, Pickle who kept us on the edge of our seats as to whether she would be able to poop on demand or have stage fright. We welcomed back Ipswich Rock Choir and CDC Street Dance who once again entertained everyone with their great displays! An exciting new main ring performer this year was Ed Hawkins of Gipping Valley Sheepdogs, wowing us with his obedient dogs who made the flock of ducks walk the plank! As always, we were treated to the dulcet tones and Radio 2 quality compere from the master of ceremony Mr John ‘The Pipes’ Whittaker, who attended an Alan Partridge workshop especially to train for the event. We also enjoyed Capel’s answer to ‘SAS Who Dares Wins’ without Ant Middleton. We had Darren, Leighann, and Kade who ran boot camp time trials, something that not even Mo Farrah would attempt. They also kindly held a transformation package raffle and generously donated the takings straight to the Funday total. We were also lucky to see the return of Ice Illusions, who delighted us with their polished routines and left us all wanting to learn to twirl a baton. Admission to Funday was, as always, free, with some of the costs being covered by local businesses sponsoring our event. Many thanks go to our all our sponsors: Main Sponsors: Bonfield Brothers, Sally’s Suffolk Dogs, T&L Banks and Upstix Additional Sponsors: A&L Electrical, AT Physio, Capel Castles, Capel Mushroom Farm, EMG Motor Group, G Ranson Plumbing & Heating Services, Hadleigh Tyre Group, Ha’Penny Press, PM Plant, Porterhouse Building & Fire Solutions Limited and Starling IT Services.

Chloe Peck, Richard Rew, Julie Gentry, Andy Bonfield, Tabbie Bonfield, Alison Hoskings, Hayden Smith, Allen Harris Snr and Allen Harris Jnr, Martine Clayton and Mark Watkins. Also Association and Trust Committee Members Trevor Banks, Duncan Knight, John Webb, Iain Bramhill, Stuart Harris, Richard Morgan, Nick Smith, Trevor Stephenson, Carolyn Love and Dave Busby. If I have forgotten anyone, I do apologise! We were very lucky to have lots of raffle prizes donated by many businesses in the local area and stallholders. A list of all the raffle prize winners can be found at: www.capelcommunitytrust.org If you live in Capel, you should have had a copy of the programme delivered through your door, but I hope everyone got to see it. There was so much in it including sponsors, advertisers, a map of the event, future events and a list of raffle prizes. Although the date of ‘Funday Version 1’ is on the front, this still applied to what we like to call ‘The Return of Funday’. A final thank you goes out to everyone who turned out to make the day such a success. As the organising committee, we have already had lots of messages saying what a great day people had. This does make it worthwhile, so we look forward to seeing you next year! After expenses, the total profit from this year’s event is in excess of £3,365 (2018 £3,000) which is responsible for the upkeep of certain amenities such as the playing field, play areas and the community centre. So thank you very much for supporting us! Next year’s Funday will be on Saturday 6 June. We’re always looking for help and you don’t have to join the committee to be involved. If you can spare a few hours or have any ideas about what you would like to see, please email: events@capelcommunityassociation.org If you took any photos on the day that you’re happy to share, please email them to the address above or post them on our Facebook Page – Capel Funday – where you will find a selection on there already. Thank you from Ruth, Jon, Malc and Steph, the Funday Committee

A big thank you once again goes to the Women’s Institute who took care of the tea, coffee and cake stall. All the tea, coffee, milk and sugar were generously donated by the Co-op Cuppa fund. All the proceeds from this stall were, as usual, gifted to Capel Community Trust. We are very grateful to the many volunteers who give their time to assist with the event. Their help made such a difference to the smooth running of the day and makes it possible for it to go ahead! So, in no particular order, we would like to thank Derek O’Galligan, Michael Pether, Geordie Darren, Naomi Kilby, Sheila Harris, Claire Kilbourn, Sarah Smy, Chris Matthews, Ian Love, Sandra Bumphrey, Mike Gilson, Claire Bramhill,

NEWS GRAND OPENING PAW-TY!

Capel Community Trust, c/o 5 The Marvens, Washbrook, Ipswich IP8 3JE

St Mary’s Canine Creche, which has now joined the award winning Canine Creche UK brand, recently hosted a well-attended grand opening party to showcase their newly refurbished facilities in Capel St Mary. Kieran Moore and Charlie Brownlee bought the facility at the end of last year and have since decided to collaborate with Suffolk Canine Creche. This has resulted in the business gaining a new name and a complete makeover, with environmental health awarding the business four stars, the highest possible score for new ventures. During the party, guests were invited to inspect the bespoke service offered on the grounds. All the dogs’ needs are completely met on site in a safe and fun environment, permitting dogs to play freely in an unkennelled facility. The creche will also offer puppy parties, whereby dogs are able to play and interact while owners can be educated on all things dog, before being gifted with a puppy party pack. Canine Creche’s founder and MD Candace Rose commented: “Kieran and Charlie have collaborated with us and worked tirelessly to ensure the facility, the processes and infrastructure all now reach the highest standards.” Kieran said: “Clients who have previously used our services, as well as a host of new dog owners came by to support us at our grand opening paw-ty. My partner Charlie and I are overwhelmed at the response.” The new creche is located at St Mary’s Caine Creche, Capel Grove, Capel St Mary IP9 2JS.

Coffee Morning with Cakes & Plants & various stalls Saturday

14th September from 10 am ‘til Noon Capel Methodist Church

Web: www.capelcommunitytrust.org Email: admin@capelcommunitytrust.org Dear Residents, The Capel Family Fun Day took place on Saturday 20th July and what a fun day it was! We were so lucky with the weather after rescheduling although some activities were cancelled due to strong winds – safety must come first. This was one of our most successful and highest return Funday to date. We wish to give a big thank you to all our sponsors, stall holders, exhibitors, volunteers, performers and to the Funday Committee with a special mention to Jon Bunkell, Ruth Rawthorn, Malcom and Step Bonfield for all your hard work, and of course to all who came and enjoyed the day with us. Exciting times ahead as we are closer to getting planning approval for the new social, community and sports hub building! Then the real hard work starts of fundraising £3.5 million for the project. Phase 1 starts shortly with works for a car park at the top of the field to relieve pressures of parking issues for the residents in The Friars and other surrounding roads. The Community Association have been extremely busy recently with the refurbishment of the Family Bar. The room has been enlarged by removing the central wall and boiler cupboard. In addition the building has been made future proof with significant amounts of data cabling and other facilities including phone charging points. The next stages are plastering then painting and the installation of the new bar to match the same style as the Vine Lounge. Thank you to the long list of volunteers who have selflessly given their time, expertise and sheer hard work to make this project progress and have a bit of fun too! We would really like to replace the furniture in both bars, we do not have the funds for this. We would welcome a wealthy benefactor or company sponsor to enable this. If this is you, please do get in touch. Your support can be shown by a plaque on the wall an article in the local press on completion. As stated before we have the task of fundraising ahead of us, would you be able to help? If you have any ideas, suggestions or would simply like to give a hand in fundraising events please do get in touch, by emailing admin@capelcommunitytrust.org or by attending one of our monthly meetings which take place on the fourth Monday of each month at 7.30pm in the Library. New faces and voices are always welcome and there are plenty of things going on throughout the year, forthcoming events include Bonfire night and our annual Christmas Float, you can show your support with and get more involved in your community. Finally, we would like to invite you all to our next monthly meeting which is on Monday 23rd September 2019 at 7:30pm in the library. We would love to hear any comments/suggestions you have for us. So an exciting year to come! Thank you for your continued and valued support. Iain Bramhill Chairman Capel Community Trust

Many thanks to all those who gave me items for the hospice tombola which raised £136 at Funday on July 20. There was a marvellous selection of prizes to be won. Many thanks also to Janet and the two Susans who helped on the stall. The amount included £15 which I raised by selling sweet peas at the gate. Linda Morrison, Hospice Rep for Capel St Mary

NEWS CONSTABLE COUNTRY PRACTICE Appointment System Update The practice will be implementing a new appointment system on September 2. The two open days we held in July were a great success and we have updated our appointment system leaflet to answer queries raised by patients. Please visit our website or pick up a leaflet for more information. Please note that there will be no pre-bookable appointments. If you need to speak to a doctor you can request them to call you the same day. If you need to be seen (about a third of all cases) the doctor will arrange for you to be seen the same day. Patients can request a call back from a doctor online from 7am, or phone the practice or call in to request one via a receptionist. It helps if you tell the receptionist the nature of your problem as it may be more appropriate for you to speak to our pharmacy technician or another member of our clinical team. They can also inform the doctor if your need is urgent. The new system will be more convenient for many patients as they won’t have to physically come to the practice. Having no pre-bookable appointments means there’s no need to call the practice at 8am, though if you think the doctor may wish to see you in person please call in the morning. You will usually be able to choose which doctor you would prefer to call you back. You can also submit an online consultation request via our eConsult service. National Patient Survey The results of the national survey were published last month and we are delighted that overall patient satisfaction is up 16 per cent to 79 per cent and ease of getting though on the phone is up 22 per cent to 64 per cent. The number of patients finding our receptionists helpful was 94 per cent, and 75 per cent of patients describe their experience of making an appointment as good (up 20 per cent). Patients having confidence and trust in the healthcare professional they last spoke to was 95 per cent, and 96 per cent felt their needs were met during their last appointment. Thank you to all patients who completed the survey. We value feedback and are delighted that the service we offer has improved significantly. However, we are always looking to further improve our service and value all feedback made directly to the practice or via our Patient Participation Group. Flu Clinics As last year, patients over 65 will be administered a different flu vaccine to those under 65. Unfortunately, there have again been delays in manufacture which means that delivery of the vaccine for under 65s is staged. This complicates the vaccination programme and we will therefore implement a similar system to last year. We will hold a number of flu clinics and will send personalised letters to every eligible patient inviting them to attend on specific dates. These letters will be sent through September and October. Please attend on the earliest date possible when you receive a letter. Please don’t attend a flu clinic if you don’t receive a letter as we may not have taken delivery of the vaccine you require. If you haven’t received a letter by the end of October and you are over 65 or believe you are eligible for a free vaccination because of your medical condition, please contact the practice. Practice Manager Pete Keeble

BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR SUE CARPENDALE Capel St Mary Ward Local Plan Consultation Residents are invited to have their say on the future of growth across Babergh and Mid Suffolk. Opportunities to drop-in at various locations across the two districts are on offer, where there is information and officers available to answer questions. Times, dates and locations until September 18 are on the council website, as are the key documents. The consultation closes on September 30. The scale of development in the villages south west of Ipswich and the need for infrastructure is substantial. Residents and consultees are being encouraged to respond online, by email or by post. CIFCO Business Plan for 2019/20 CIFCO is a trading arm for the two councils. It invests in commercial property solely to generate income to support the councils’ finances. Babergh and Mid Suffolk have approved CIFCO’s future plans, looking to increase the £1.4m annual income it already generates. This is equivalent to increasing Council Tax by more than 12 per cent. CIFCO’s business plan for 2019/20 will now form the basis of its trading over the next 12 months – including the investment of a further £50m agreed by both councils back in February. New Refuse Collection Rounds The rounds changed mid-July in order to service the cumulative increase in the number of households throughout the district. It is taking time to establish these changes. To check dates for your address visit: www.bmsdchosting.net/ waste-services/babergh-bin-collection If a bin isn’t emptied, report it via www.babergh.gov.uk/waste-services/mywaste-hasnt-been-collected or phone 0300 123 4000 within two days. 2030 Carbon Neutral Climate change is a major global threat. Motions to council about Suffolk’s county-wide aim to become carbon neutral were passed by both Babergh and Mid Suffolk in July, along with plans to set up a task force in partnership with other public sector bodies. Free Swims for Children In partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure and Everyone Active, Babergh is encouraging younger residents to get active over the summer holidays by offering free swims at their leisure centres. Children aged 16 and under across the district, can swim for free at Hadleigh and Sudbury pools during public sessions in the summer holidays. Work to build a new swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre is set to begin at the end of this month. Babergh is investing £2.4m. Hadleigh Town Council will provide £200,000 and Sports England are grant-aiding £150,000. The new pool will replace the existing one once complete. sue.carpendale@babergh.gov.uk

Full details of any public consultation will be circulated to all residents. CAPEL ST MARY PARISH COUNCIL – VACANCY Following the resignation of one of our councillors, Capel St Mary Parish Council has a vacancy for a parish councillor. We shall be looking for someone to join us in this position in September 2019. The main purpose of a parish councillor is to represent the views of all residents within your village. As part of a local council you will have responsibility working with the parish council to manage many aspects of the village, deciding on how much to raise through the council tax in order to deliver your council’s services, influencing and shaping the development of the village and as part of the planning process, commenting on planning applications. You would look to improve the quality of life and the environment in the local area, working to identify issues which are important to the lives of the residents you represent and working to bring about improvements through local projects. Capel St Mary Parish Council meets in the library at 7.30pm on the second Monday of each month. You would be expected to attend (we don’t meet in August). Our Village Environment Capel St Mary Parish Council is looking for residents to come forward with suggestions and initiatives about environment or recycling issues they are concerned by to help us improve our village and produce an Environmental Action Plan. We have had preliminary discussions on ideas such as flower meadows, Tetra Pak recycling, walking to school and restoration of the nature reserve, but now would appreciate feedback from the community to help us move this forward. If you have any suggestions or ideas you would like to share, or have a particular interest, we would be delighted to hear from you. We can be contacted at 01473 314103 / capel.parishclerk@btinternet.com or at the parish council office which is open on Tuesdays from 10am-noon and on Fridays from 1-3pm. We are situated to the rear of Drayton Insurance, 27a The Street. GET TO KNOW YOUR PARISH COUNCILLORS Councillor Bill Dimond Where were you born? I was born in Ipswich. How long have you lived in the village? I moved from Ipswich to Capel St Mary in June 1992. How long have you been a parish councillor? I became a parish councillor in May 2019. What made you want to become a parish councillor? Having attended the parish council meetings regularly since April 2016, I wanted to be in the position where I would hopefully be able to do something positive for the village. What do you like most about Capel St Mary? There is a good neighbourhood spirit within the village, which always seem to come together at times of major events. What changes, if any, would you like to see within the village? I would like to see more facilities for the teenager community, but I also recognise that there has been a shift away from attending the traditional youth facilities as activities become more diverse. This makes it difficult to provide facilities to satisfy all. What is/was your job? I was a civil servant in the Ministry of Defence for over 37 years. What are your interests or hobbies? I became a commissioned officer with the Cadet Forces in January 1984. I find working with youth worthwhile and rewarding.

Advertorial CAPEL CANINES DOGGY DAYCARE CENTRE JOINS FORCES WITH THE AWARD-WINNING CANINE CRECHE MODEL The facility at Capel St Mary had historically changed hands numerous times and was bought late last year by Kieran Moore and Charlie Brownlee, who quickly developed a passion for this animal business but realised it could be so much better. Now in collaboration with Suffolk Canine Creche, the business has a new name and a complete makeover.

want to have company and plenty of comfort breaks, as well as a quick power nap before the next game. The Puppy Intro area will allow your playful pupster to integrate at their own pace. Puppies are able to see the older dogs, but are safe, and when they are ready they can start to integrate into the mainstream pack.

Candace Rose, MD and Founder of Suffolk Canine Creche, commented: “Kieran and Charlie have worked tirelessly to ensure the facility, the processes and infrastructure all now reach the highest standards. Following an inspection by environmental health, they are rated at four stars, the highest score they could attain for a new business.”

Our Puppy Parties are normally held bi-monthly on Saturday mornings from 10am-noon, where both puppies and owners can attend a delightful two hours of fun and frolics with lots of off-lead safe play, interaction, education and, of course, a puppy party pack to take home!

Kieran said: “Clients who had used the service previously, as well as a host of new dog owners all came by to support us at our grand opening paw-ty. My partner Charlie and I were overwhelmed at the response.” All canines play freely in an unkennelled facility. The team have been trained at Martlesham and the new facility has oodles of toys, games and enrichment. This is now a top class facility which is a credit to the animal care industry, mirroring Suffolk Canine Creche’s award-winning business model with the best staff to dog ratio of any facility. The bespoke facility is designed to be cage free (unkennelled) with only your dog in mind. Everything is here; we don’t take your dog off-site or travel to other locations. Your dogs are safe and secure at all times. Filled with ball pits, climbing frames, playhouses and tons of toys, play is interesting, safe and stimulating. Bubble machines, ball games, treasure hunts and dancing with the dogs are all weekly activities. We have lots of chill out areas with sofas and lots of beds for the older dogs that just

In between time though, we still have a lot going on at The Case! Macmillan Coffee Morning On Saturday 28 September we will be holding our second Macmillan Coffee Morning. We are hoping to repeat the wonderful success we had last year (despite the awful weather) and perhaps raise even more money for this important national charity. Coffee (and tea) will be served from 10am to noon (or until we run out of cake!). There will also be a raffle. Donations of (preferably) homemade cakes will be gratefully received. Please check the website closer to the date for more details. Our monthly quiz will also be held on Saturday 28 September. As always, teams can be up to six, and winning teams receive drink vouchers. Entrance is £2 per person and the quiz will start at 8.30pm. The new raffle for FIND, our charity of the year, is now well-established and is helping us to boost the amount we are raising for this very worthy local organisation. The monthly Open Mic night continues as usual on the first Tuesday of the month, September 3. Come and join in or just listen to some very talented local musicians. The music starts around 8.30pm. For more details please contact Dave: 07885 963882 Advanced Notice Due to the Bentley Fireworks being held on Saturday 26 October, our October Quiz Night will be held on Saturday 2 November. CRAFTERS UNLIMITED A craft club which meets on the first Monday of the month (except for bank holidays when it’s the following Monday). Saturday workshops (10am4pm) and Monday meetings (7.30-10pm) are held in Wherstead Village Hall Meeting Rooms. Samples of each project are displayed the month before and other projects are available. We had a most enjoyable workshop on Saturday 3 August learning more advanced parchment craft. On Monday 5 Debbie showed us how to make a felt stuffed bird. My favourite is the puffin. Monday 2 September: Lava Bracelet (Janet & Jill) Plus our AGM and our 10year anniversary celebration with refreshments and cake.

CAPEL LADIES CLUB July 18: My Life in Music by Hattie Bennett Music has certainly been an important ingredient in Hattie Bennett’s life, and as proof of this she brought along her favourite instrument – a cello – when she came to speak to us in July. Hattie’s talk was lively, amusing and at times sad, but it was a joyous experience listening to her – particularly as she illustrated the different periods of her life with little ‘taster’ tunes on her cello, including Old McDonald Had A Farm and Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves to name but two! To discover more about Hattie and for information regarding her concerts visit: www.felixstowemusic.com July 20: Capel Funday Funday turned out bright and breezy with an odd shower or two – but by and large it was a sunny afternoon. Our stall, entitled Home-made and Home-grown, and selling plants, cakes and jams, as well as paperbacks and pre-loved jewellery, made a grand profit of £236.94 towards club funds. Thanks to everyone who helped. August 1: CLC Barbecue at The King’s Head We held our summer barbecue at The King’s Head, Stutton, where we couldn’t have been made more welcome! There were only a few of us, but just the right number to fit into one of the summerhouses in the pub garden. It was a delightful setting, with coloured lights decorating the garden, and the barbecue foods and multiple side dishes were a feast to behold. Service was excellent; we simply stayed put and the food was brought out to us. The only downside was that there were such generous servings we couldn’t finish everything! We’ll definitely be back on another occasion! Thank you to all the staff for their warm welcome and delicious food!

Monday 7 October: Jill will show us how to use knitting lace

I hope we may have tempted one or two readers to come and join us – we meet on the first Thursday of the month at 7.45pm in Capel Library.

OUT & ABOUT

STOUR VALLEY U3A On August 14 we welcomed Terry Waite with a talk entitled Survival in Solitude. As a former hostage negotiator and hostage himself, he spoke of his experiences working for the release of innocent people across the world and he described his own experiences in captivity in Beirut. The theme of our meeting on September 11 is Great Composers of Film Music. Steve Johnson, a film enthusiast, will recall the history of music in film from the beginnings of sound, with emphasis on specific composers who have made significant contributions to music in film. Jenny Gibbs will talk to us on An Englishwoman’s Life in Rural Turkey on Wednesday 9 October. Her stories capture a simple, serene, pastoral way of life in a Turkish mountain village unchanged for centuries, from the day she first arrived there 25 years ago to today. On November 13 Magistrate Graham Higgins will talk of Tales From The Bench. He will look at our legal heritage, particularly the part played by Suffolk. He will relate how the role of magistrates and local events have played a part in this history and will bring us up to date with an opportunity to decide how a defendant should be sentenced by briefly outlining a case. He will also include some of his unusual experiences on the bench. We meet at Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2.15pm. Annual membership is £12 which entitles members to attend meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. Each month The Coffee Grinders meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt CO7 6SD from 10am to noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members and gives all members the opportunity to meet the activity group leaders and the committee while enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 27 September.

MANNINGTREE & DISTRICT PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY Our summer break continues and at the time of writing we are still looking forward to the barbecue which had to be postponed due to the weather. The marathon results are in and the overall winner was David Garnham with a total of 87 points. One of his winning images in the Deterioration category is show here. Second was Harvey Perkins with 83 points and joint third were Sandra Crittenden and Hasje Mousley, both with 80 points. Well done to all! We look forward to next year’s marathon! The Facebook challenge continues and recent winners of the ‘letter m’ challenge were Peter Cannons and Ian Parker. The current challenge is ‘summer’ so we look forward to seeing some inspirational images taken in the recent hot spell!

SCOUTS JET OFF FOR ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME Unit 18 Iceni and Unit 19 Teagulls, both from Suffolk left on 20 July to fly off to the World Scout Jamboree in North America. The Scouts from Suffolk joined 5,000 others from across the UK, and 40,000 more from nearly every country in the world, for two weeks of activities and skills development, while, best of all, making new friends at one of the most truly international events on the planet. The UK Scouts flew to New York for 24 hours in the Big Apple. The city was taken over by the Scouts getting to know each other, seeing the sights and learning to navigate the big city, before they travelled to the Jamboree site in wild and wonderful West Virginia. The World Scout Jamboree includes opportunities for Scouts to learn new skills with other young people from across the globe. They will experience high adventure in a community of new residents from nearly every country in the world. Ollie Smith, Unit 19 Leader, said: “I can’t believe we are actually here about to jump on the plane, the airport is full of Scouts. I have been counting down the days until we leave and finished packing two weeks ago. The people I am going with have become my closest friends and I can’t wait to make friends with Scouts from all over the world! We have skills to share food to taste. It’s going to be awesome.” As well as being a fantastic opportunity for young people, the event is an amazing chance for adult volunteers such as me to take part in activities and learn new skills that they can use in other aspects of their life. Groups from Wolsey District include 26th and 32nd Ipswich and Castle Hill Cobras. Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: “Scouts from Suffolk have travelled 3,800 miles to wild and wonderful West Virginia, USA for the 24th World Scout Jamboree. These are some of our brightest and best and every one of them will be an ambassador for the Scouts, the UK’s largest mixed movement, helping prepare girls and boys with skills for life. “World Scout Jamborees only happen every four years and tens of thousands of Scouts attend each one. They are incredible festivals of peace, friendship and adventure. Young people will make friends for life with people from over 150 countries, experience different food, language and culture while learning new skills. It will be the journey of a lifetime. “The 2019 Jamboree, jointly hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, is set to be one of the biggest and most exciting yet. The theme is Unlock A New World – focusing especially on how we can create a sustainable world together.” Mark Pearson

The new season commences on September 10 with an open competition of images taken within a 10 mile radius of Manningtree to be judged by club members. Further details of the new programme can be found online. Meetings are held on the second, fourth and fifth Thursdays of the month between September and May at 7.30pm at the St Johns Ambulance Centre, Station Road, Manningtree CO11 1EB. New members are welcome to join us or may attend initially as a visitor. Please contact our secretary for details: 01206 393751 / madps@post.com www.manningtreeanddistrictphotographicsociety.co.uk

CAPEL ST MARY GARDEN CLUB On June 27 a group of members went to Wyken Vineyard, arriving in time to have an enjoyable lunch in their well-known Leaping Hare restaurant. At 2pm the gardens opened and we were confronted with two dancing peacocks. Luckily they didn’t follow as we as we walked the lovely gardens.

On July 11, 17 members went for lunch at Hintlesham Golf Club. We had a tasty meal but long term plans to sit outside with our coffee were frustrated by the weather being too hot! On several previous occasions it was too wet! We also had a quiz and a raffle. The photo shows a group including our president, Brenda Eyers. Unfortunately, through circumstances beyond our control, we have had to cancel our meeting on September 26 so our next meeting is on October 24 when Julian Ives will talk on Natural Pest Control. We are always happy to welcome you if you want to just come to a particular meeting as a visitor (£2.50). Any queries, please let me know. Chairman Edwina Cox: 01473 311121

OUT & ABOUT EBONY’S BLOG Life at The Shelley Centre What happens when riders move? We get very fond of our riders over the years, but the child riders will keep growing up! At the end of last term we saw several children move to new schools and had emotional farewells. Edward is pictured saying goodbye to everyone and anyone he could round up to be in his last photo-shoot. Good luck in your new venues, all of you.

Luckily our adults stay the same and we can really appreciate their long term commitment to riding for the good of their health and wellbeing. Some have been with us the full 30 years! What has been going on during the school holidays? The live herd has been fed, watered and exercised by a team of volunteers, the fields have been kept in good condition by the hardworking maintenance team, and the trustees have continued to look after the affairs of the centre. No doubt the fundraising committee will be cooking up events to fill the calendar and raise the money that keeps us all going. So on behalf of the herd, thank you everyone!

KENNY’S SESAW NEWS We would like to send a huge thank-you to all the lovely people who attended, helped or donated items for the annual SESAW Open Day and Fun Dog Show in July. A massive £4,000 was raised which will help us look after the rescued animals at SESAW. Our next Suffolk event is the Christmas Fair at the Old School, Long Melford on Sunday 17 November. Tables are available for outside stallholders; to book please visit www.sesaw.co.uk or call 07912 007617. Much hard work goes into preparing for a sale and we are in need of a few local people who could spare a few hours occasionally. If you could set up tables, unload the van, put up banners or just make the tea, please call 07881 785535. We also need volunteers to help generally around the sanctuary and care for the animals, including Bella, an 18-month-old lurcher. This lovable girl is as mad as a March hare, loves tummy tickles and cuddles, needs a couple of walks to let off steam and is then content to crash and watch the world go by. Interacts well with other dogs, preferably those nearer her own size because of her boisterous nature. Will benefit from training, could probably live with a confident cat as she’s not particularly interested in them.

Margaret Fowler, our vice-chairman, received the President’s Award for ‘exceptional dedication to the association over many years’ at Hartpury in July. One person from each region was there to accept their award from Princess Anne. Countryfile was there to film for the programme aired on July 28, so those of you who missed it, catch up quick. The Hadleigh branch of Building Society presented a wonderful cheque for following a second year of for the centre.

Ipswich us with £2,457 support

With challenges ahead and people on our waiting list, the more help we can get from local people and businesses the better. A big hoorah for all of you who get involved, and greetings from the horses, ponies and The Only Literate Simulator in the country!

Please get in touch if Bella is the dog for you, or if you would like to look after the cats, rabbits, chickens, sheep and dogs, including me. Schools / SPORT BENTLEY & COPDOCK PRIMARY SCHOOLS How quickly September has come around again! With the start of the new school year we welcome some new faces to our schools. Our Reception classes are eager to begin their schooling having had some fun at the induction sessions in the summer term. We also welcome Mrs Collins to Copdock who will be teaching Woodpeckers. Initially she will work with Mr Collins (no relation) who has often been a supply teacher for us. We already have a busy diary with a trip to the theatre planned, an exciting activity week and some outdoor learning around the river at Flatford. This promises to be a stimulating start to the term, which will hopefully set us all up for another amazing year of learning. We would like to take this opportunity to invite members of our community to Copdock Primary School on Friday 27 September for our annual Macmillan Coffee Afternoon. Please join us for refreshments and entertainment by the children, all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Keep an eye out around the village for posters for more details. For more news and up-to-date information about our schools, please visit: www.bentleycopdock.co.uk

ROBIN’S NEWS Baby Bears The Baby Bears have welcoming some new friends; we look forward to getting to know the new babies and to finding out what they are interested in. In the process leading up to a new baby starting at Robin’s, we offer settling in or trial sessions. This involves the parents or carers coming in for an hour with their child, where they sit with the child’s key person to discuss the child’s routine, likes, interests, allergies, etc. This is also a great opportunity for the child to become familiar with the room, their key person and other children, as well as for the parents/carers to get to know the key person and ask any questions they may have prior to their child starting. We then offer an hour trial where the child is dropped off; this allows them a short period of time to get used to being away from their parents/carers and for them to become more familiar with the adults and the room before they stay for a full session. EAST BERGHOLT UNITED FC Preparations continued for the new season with healthy numbers attending pre-season training including a number of juniors looking to make the step up. If you would like to sponsor the club in some capacity we would also be delighted to hear from you. Club strips, dugouts, banners and boards on matchdays are all potential exposure for your business while supporting a local organisation. We are looking for new teams, boys or girls, of any age group to join us as we look for the club to grow. Also ladies who would like to join are welcome. If you are interested please contact David George at: davidgeorge5000@hotmail.com This upcoming season is the 125th anniversary of the club and there will be special events to mark this momentous achievement. We are looking to get in touch with as many former players and officials as possible. Please let us have your details by replying to the secretary or on our Facebook page. The FIFA tournament will be repeated and is open to all-comers so keep an eye out for the next one. It is also anticipated that the darts tournament will become a regular event and will be open to all, so darts players, look out for the next event. We are always on the lookout for people who can help the club as committee members, either on the playing side or just in the background. Steve Butcher: stevebutcher55@btinternet.com

CAPEL ST MARY BOWLS CLUB A reminder that all of our latest news, fixtures and results can be found at: www.capelstmarybowls@onesuffolk.net Saturday 3 August saw our annual barbecue, once again kindly hosted by Tony and Liz Gulliver. The weather was kind again this year and members and their guests had a lovely evening. The food was excellent and Pam, our quizmaster, survived some challenges to her well thought-out quizzes. Well done to all involved in putting this event on; it’s a lot of hard work but appreciated by all, especially the amazing desserts made by our ladies. On Sunday 4 August, our club fielded four squads in the annual Boxford Open Charity event, and once again the weather was kind. Teams from Suffolk and Essex took part, and congratulations to our squad, John and Elaine Wright and Richard and Marion McCullum (pictured), who finished runners-up overall, losing to home team Boxford very narrowly in the final.

We started the summer holidays with a visit from Zoolab. The Toddling Tigers had the opportunity to pet and hold a variety of different creatures, ranging from rats to tarantulas. They were intrigued by the animals, with squeals of excitement and lots of laughter. The children were able to experience something unique and thrilling, which they shared with our holiday club children. Gruffalos As you read we are preparing for our Gruffalos to return. It seems a long time ago that we wished our grown-up Gruffalos goodbye at our graduation ceremony. It was a wonderful way to say goodbye. The gifts, cards and very kind words where truly overwhelming and very much appreciated. September sees us returning to Forest School with our new cohort, where we are looking forward to watching them flourish in the wonderful outdoors. Here’s to fun, learning and laughter ahead! If you would like further information about our nursery, pre-school, Forest School, out of school or holiday clubs, please contact Emma Deakin: 01473 310768 / info@robinschildcare.co.uk

In the leagues we are having a mixed year. Well done to our Kites squad who currently top the Samford League Division A table. Our Kestrels are in third place in Division E of the Ipswich & District Two Woods League. In all other leagues we have done well to maintain mid-table positions in what has been a difficult season for player availability. The management committee has some difficult decisions to make regarding next year’s programme. IMPORTANT DATES September 1: Club Finals Day October 19: Presentation Evening October 21: AGM Jack High

CHURCH NEWS CAPEL COMMUNITY CHURCH A Direct Line to Peace of Mind? It might just be me, but have you noticed that there seems to be more advertising on TV about insurance than ever before? There are commercials featuring cute meerkats, annoying opera singers in taxis, and not forgetting, Pulp Fiction character Winston Wolfe, now relegated from his role as a gangster to become just another car insurance guy. Then we have ads for price comparison sites with various incentives that seek to entice us to log on for an instant quote. But it doesn’t seem to matter what type of insurance it is; life cover, household contents or travel insurance; very often it’s accompanied with a sales pitch that says something like: “Buy our product and have real peace of mind”. Even when buying a new household appliance, like a washing machine or fridge, you’re quite likely to be offered an additional warranty or breakdown policy with a very similar strapline contained in the glossy leaflet, “…for complete peace of mind”. The thing is that’s exactly what we all need, complete peace of mind. But often an insurance policy, pension scheme or private health care programme doesn’t seem to fully set our minds at rest. I believe we all need a much deeper sense of peace – a feeling that says: “Whatever I have to face today I can cope with”; or “Whatever happens to my job, family or possessions – I know I’m loved and cared for”. But what insurance policy can make that sort of claim? Well, basically they can’t. But perhaps God can. I believe that by finding a personal relationship with a loving God, through faith in Jesus Christ, we can all know a deep sense of peace. In the Bible, Jesus is actually called the Prince of Peace. He’s able to replace any fear of the future or worry about the trials of today with his unique peace. The Bible also says that God’s peace transcends understanding. In other words the peace that God gives us can even bypass our intellect so that the circumstances no longer dictate our emotional state. Now that’s what I call real peace of mind. In the words of one well-known insurance provider: “Can your insurance do that?” Mark Firmin

A WORD FROM ST MARY’S Faith? Now that Canon Jim Pendorf has retired, it has fallen to me to make a contribution from St Mary’s Church to Capel Capers. Why me? My only qualification is that I have been attending the church for over 50 years and have turned to it at times of joy and times of sorrow. Although I no longer live in the village, Capel Church remains my spiritual home. As one of the contributors from the so-called ‘Faith Community’ it seemed a good idea to look further into what we mean by ‘Faith’. In this context it means adhering to one of the world’s great religions, but the word itself implies belief in something that cannot be proved. We don’t ‘believe’ in the laws of science because they are provable facts, but can I prove that God exists? Not really. St Thomas Aquinas, the great 13th century Christian philosopher, advanced five ‘proofs’ of the existence of God and even he thought in the end that they only showed that God could exist, not that he definitely did. In the end what people believe depends on what they want to believe. Holocaust deniers seem to believe sincerely that millions of Jewish people were not put to death in concentration camps like Belsen in spite of the evidence of the buildings still standing there and the testimony of survivors. Those who deny climate change and global warming fall into the same category. The Faith Community in Capel must surely be a minority, but their belief in God is rational, it is their chosen philosophy of life. Their faith can sometimes be founded solely on intellectual arguments, but it is usually much more; practising their faith has proved to be a spiritually uplifting experience. Some, of course, are simply perpetuating the habits learned during their childhood. A small number have experienced a sudden and sometimes dramatic moment of conversion. St Paul’s experience on the road to Damascus was an exceptional conversion; changing him from a persecutor of the fledgling Christian Church to one of its staunchest heroes. Faith then is an interesting word, assertive and yet carrying with it a hint of uncertainty, and faith community reflecting the same mixture of certainty and doubt. The Faith community comprises a great deal more than simply the Christian Faith; but it is the only one with such a visible presence in Capel. By writing exclusively about Christianity, no disrespect of the other great religions is intended.

CAPEL METHODIST CHURCH Grains of Sand I’ve just returned from a four-day break on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. We went to Rhossili with a lovely three mile stretch of sandy beach and I wondered how many grains of sand were there. I Googled it when I got back and one estimate is that in all the sandy beaches and desert areas on the planet there are 7x1018 grains of sand (for non-mathematicians that is seven with 18 zeros after it – a very big number). I have been to dark sky areas in the Brecon Beacons and the Lake District and you can look up and see the millions of stars. The Hubble Telescope can see even more that the naked eye – one estimate is that there are 7x1022 (i.e. seven with 22 zeros after it). What a huge universe we live in – the mind can scarcely conceive it. What do these figures do for you? From the walk along to Worms Head at Rhossili we looked down at the people on the beach and they looked no bigger than insects. King David, a king in Palestine 2,500 years ago, looked at the amazing universe as he saw it and asked in a song he wrote “What are humans that God should think of them?”. If we find it difficult to grasp these numbers, let’s go the other way. Water contains molecules of H20. If you were to count the number of molecules in 10 drops of water you would get a number equal to all the stars in the universe. If you were to count the number of atoms in an average human body there would 100,000 times the number of stars in the universe (7v1027). King David indicated that God knows the exact number, not the estimates that we grasp after. In a healthy body the bone marrow releases 2.5 million new red blood cells every second into the blood stream. No wonder David said “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” and it led him to worship God. Dr Philip Bland served with The Leprosy Mission in India where performing surgery for people suffering from Leprosy. He too quoted David in describing the human body as “fearfully and wonderfully made by God”. The vastness and the intimate details all point to a wonderful God who created us in his image. The scale is too great for us to fully comprehend. Doctors, scientists, mathematicians and astro-physicists all give us a greater understanding of the amazing world and the amazing human body, and I praise and thank God for all the insights they bring, but I am just thankful that he knows everything about me and still loves me and wants to work in and with me and with all who will acknowledge him.
