In Touch online:

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I’m going to return to a previous subject this month because it’s constantly on my mind. Every time I drive, every time I walk down a busy street or stand in a queue, and very occasionally at home, I’m struck by how impatient we have become. Almost everyone (and I include myself here) is so terribly busy, we seem to live our lives at a rate of knots. It’s utterly exhausting, but also brings less attractive qualities – such as insensitivity and selfishness – to the fore. This morning I witnessed three incidents of poor behaviour – one by a driver outside my son’s school, the second at the Co-op where a terribly important person huffed and puffed in obvious annoyance behind a lady who was struggling to find the correct coins to pay for her coffee, and the third at a pedestrian crossing when not one but two drivers ignored the couple waiting to cross. Not major incidents I know, and I don’t intend to draw major conclusions based on one bad morning, but am I the only one who thinks we have become a little less caring of others in our day-to-day lives? Often it’s the little things which make the difference, a polite wave when a driver gives way, a smile and a thank-you to a shop assistant, holding a shop or office door open, being a little kinder to a driver who may be unfamiliar with the road or just not as quick to react… My granddad was known to say, “Please and thank you will take you around the world”. It’s not entirely realistic, but the connotation is clear. Christmas can be a hectic time and the extra stress and expense may create additional frustrations when we’re out and about, but let’s resist the urge to snap back. What’s five minutes either way? You’ll get there in the end and do it without getting stressed or upsetting someone along the way. Kindness is a quality we all need to embrace a little bit more and it’s entirely free to give. Perhaps my granddad wasn’t so far off the mark after all. And on that note, my colleagues and I here at Mansion House Publishing wish you and yours the very best for the Christmas Season and the New Year.

CLAYDON & BARHAM CHURCH CHRISTMAS BAZAAR A big thank you to all who turned out to support our bazaar, held this year on a different date and at a different venue. We particularly want to thank Claydon & Barham Community Centre for pulling out all the stops to accommodate us at fairly short notice after our normal venue was unavailable. We had a wonderful afternoon with a really good community atmosphere and we raised at least £1,630 towards getting Barham Church Bells ringing again. Our thanks also to all those who made pickles, jams, cakes and supplied stock and prizes for other stalls, those who delivered the advertising leaflet to every home and, of course, all who worked so hard on the day.

BUS SERVICE CHANGES – AGAIN! After issuing the yellow Claydon and Barham Bus Times leaflet in September, I returned from our holiday to learn that the 113/114 Ipswich – Claydon – Barham – Eye – Diss service contract had been awarded to Simonds who used to operate the service before Galloway. Not just a change of operator, but also a change of timetable with some journeys between the morning and afternoon peaks withdrawn on Mondays to Fridays together with a reduced service on Saturdays. However, one bright spot is that some service has been restored to the ‘Barham Loop’ (ie. the old 89 route via York Crescent, Edinburgh Gardens, Thornhill Road and Barham Church Lane). There are four journeys to and from Ipswich on Monday to Friday and seven on Saturday. Times are as follow from York Crescent to Ipswich Monday to Friday: 11.01 12.03 14.37 16.20 Saturday: 07.55 08.33 11.35 13.33 15.33 16.33 17.33 Returning from Ipswich Old Cattle Market Bus Station (Stand M) Monday to Friday: 11.40 13.05 14.05 15.15 Saturday: 08.20 09.20 12.10 15.00 16.15 17.45 18.10 Passengers can also travel from the loop to Eye, Diss and intermediate points. It is planned to issue another edition of the bus times leaflet. Barry Moore, Claydon and Whitton Parish Council Transport Representative

CLAYDON AND WHITTON PARISH COUNCIL EXPANSION FOR SUFFOLK PRIMARY SCHOOL THANKS TO FORMER PUPILS Years 5 and 6 at Claydon Primary School will be taking their SATs in a brandnew classroom block next year, thanks to the work of former pupils. Ipswich-based construction company SEH French worked alongside design and property consultants Concertus to refurbish and remodel existing areas of the school building and build a brand-new classroom block to create 105 extra places for pupils in the region. Situated on part of the neighbouring high school’s playing field, the new standalone block features five new classrooms, a studio and a hall for the older pupils. SEH French’s director Simon Girling, contracts manager Simon Hubert and site manager Steve Sharpe are all former pupils at the school, so this made it an extra special project for the team. Simon Hubert said: “It was great to return to my old primary school to manage such an important project. New houses in the area means that the demand for places at the school has increased. The creation of five new classrooms and additional facilities aims to fulfill that demand and will be a huge benefit to the village.” The existing school building has also undergone a transformation. A classroom was converted into a staff room and the existing offices and school reception were remodeled and refurbished. The car park has been extended and an additional car park has been created at the Recreation Ground, allowing parents easier access to the school site through a new gate on to the school field. This simplifies drop-off and pick-up for parents. Adelina Bran, architectural designer at Concertus Design and Property Consultants Ltd, said: “The solution presented in the new block is designed to enhance the teaching and educational value of the school site, while minimising impacts on neighbouring properties, Claydon High School and the setting of the site. The proposed extension to the school is to take the form of a standalone building, which allows for a feeling of maturity and greater responsibility as children progress through their educational lives.” A spokesperson at Claydon Primary School said: “Our school community is delighted with the new build, as well as the work to the existing building. It has provided state-of-the-art facilities for Years 5 and 6, making their learning feel even more special. Due to the design and aesthetics they find the environment extremely calming, enabling them to fully focus on their learning. All pupils are also extremely excited to use the new art studio. “A huge thank you to all involved in the project, something which our community will benefit from greatly, especially Claydon Primary School pupils.” The new classroom block was officially opened during a completion ceremony on Wednesday 16 October.

We are looking for volunteer to support our reception/admin at our head office in Claydon on a Wednesday morning. If you can help please email volunteer@ageuksuffolk.org or call 01473 298684.

New Parish Councillor The parish council has welcomed Claire Cutler as a new councillor. She has also joined the planning committee. Claire’s details can be found on the website, or please come and meet her at a parish council meeting – members of the public are always welcome. There are still some vacancies on the parish council. If you would like to have a voice in local decisions and to provide a service to your community, please do get in touch to find out more about what the role entails. Tree for Life Mid Suffolk District Council is currently promoting Tree for Life, a scheme which offers all families a tree to mark the arrival of every new child, both newborn and newly adopted in 2019. Memorial trees are available to parents who have lost a child in the same period. To find out more, search Tree For Life Mid Suffolk. Next Meeting The next parish council meeting is on 13 January at the SALC offices, Unit 11a, Hill View Business Park, Old Ipswich Road, Claydon IP6 0AJ. An agenda can be obtained from www.claydonandbarham.onesuffolk.net, on noticeboards or by contacting the clerk three working days before the meeting. Meeting dates up to March 2021 can be found online. Season’s Greetings Parish councillors and their clerk would like to wish you all a warm and peaceful celebration and a Happy New Year. The parish clerk, Charmaine Greenan, can be contacted at: claywhit@btinternet.com / 07887 459989

BARHAM PARISH COUNCIL Over the last few months, the parish council has noticed that the grassland on either side of the bottom of Barham Church Lane was increasingly being used for some pretty large advertising signs, often for things that were not local to Barham and the surrounding villages. A number of these were commercial and quite distracting. Local organisations wanting to use the area should email the clerk in advance; appropriate signs for local events will normally be accepted with prior notice. There is now a notice on the land reminding people that ‘This site is managed by the parish council and advertising is strictly prohibited unless prior authorisation has been given by the parish council’. The parish council is very happy to receive requests for grant funding from residents or community groups. If you have a need, please contact the parish clerk who can provide the necessary forms. The next full parish council meeting is on Monday 2 December at 7.30pm in Claydon and Barham Village Hall. Future meeting dates and agendas are available via the website or can be viewed on the village noticeboards, which are located near the entrance of the Co-op and at Barham Green. If you would like a specific topic discussed as an agenda item, please email the parish clerk. The agendas have to be published at least three clear working days before the meeting date, so any items received after this would have to be added to the next full council meeting. As we reach the last edition of In Touch for 2019, Barham Parish Council would like to take this opportunity to wish all its residents and those in the surrounding villages a very Merry Christmas and we hope you enjoy the festive season while keeping safe. NEWS HENLEY PARISH COUNCIL

SUFFOLK ENERGY-FROM-WASTE FACILITY School Bookings for 2020 The Suffolk energy-from-waste facility is taking bookings for the new year. Why not book your school in for a visit? Classes of up to 30 students from Key Stage 2 and above are welcome to visit the facility and explore how we make use of Suffolk’s household waste. During the visit, students will be given a tour of the facility and have a chance to explore our purpose built, interactive visitor centre.

The planning application for new houses on the field opposite Pond End and Pearsons Place still has no outcome. A considerable number of objections from residents have been published on the planning website, together, of course, with the parish council’s own objection. The applicant has published a revised indicative map of the site, which now includes a pedestrian crossing close to the entrance to Pond End. This is presumably in response to many concerns which have been expressed about increased traffic and the proximity of the school to the site. Hopefully, if planning officers are inclined to approve the application, it will be referred to a district council committee for consideration so that the arguments can be properly aired in public. In that situation the parish council will no doubt continue to argue that this is the wrong site and the wrong type of housing for the village. Henley’s own proposal, based on a properly conducted housing needs survey, is leading towards a community-led housing venture which will guarantee about 15 affordable homes for local people, alongside a similar number of openmarket homes. Watch this space for more news of the various plans. The next regular parish council meeting will be held on Monday 13 January at 7.30pm in the community centre – all are very welcome to attend. You can find our privacy notice on the Henley website. If you have any questions about anything to do with the parish council, don’t hesitate to contact us. If you are not on our village email list and would like to be, just send a simple request to henleyparishcouncil@gmail.com or rodcaird@yahoo.co.uk and we will sort it out. And don’t forget to keep an eye from time to time on our own website where we publish all sorts of useful (we hope!) information and contacts. Parish Clerk Rod Caird: 07785 331217 www.henley.onesuffolk.net

Visits can be tailored to meet specific requirements to ensure the experience is suitable for students from Key Stage 2 up to Higher Education level. If you would like to discuss what we can offer, please get in touch via the details provided below. Interested in having a look around the facility? The energy-from-waste facility is holding a series of open days this winter. We currently have spaces available on the following dates: 11 December at 6pm, 19 December at 10am, 14 January at 2pm, 28 January at 10am and 19 February at 2pm. There are 20 spaces available on each day and pre-booking is essential. GIPPING VALLEY COUNTY & BLAKENHAM CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFE LINE & CHARITY SHOP DISTRICT COUNCILLOR JOHN FIELD I am producing this in early November, and you will be reading it in early December. In this period before the election, I must be careful not to report county and district issues in any way that would influence your election choice. Most public district and county meetings have been cancelled or delayed until after December 13. Cabinet and full council meetings will then start again. Of course work will go on, just not in public view. Planning committees and meetings where only people directly affected are present will continue as normal. Reports on issues that have been concerning you will unfortunately have to wait until January, but it is vital we don’t compromise a fair election process. This period straddles the time when Scrutiny would start to look at next year’s budget. We normally consider the estimated income and expenditure needed for services towards the end of November. That is then updated when the settlement from the government becomes clear, normally in late December. This year we will have a presentation of the county’s transformation programmes and the budget figures on December 19 then subject them to scrutiny on January 7. I should be able to get our findings and recommendations to you for the February edition of In Touch. I can only add Happy Christmas! The run-up to it will certainly be unusual. If you have any queries, please ring 07545 423808 or email: john.field@suffolk.gov.uk

How time flies! Already we are on the countdown to Christmas and not only are we busy getting ready for the arrival of our December group of children, we are also busy preparing for our visit to Belarus for our Father Frost Christmas program. We will not travel until January 3, but we will still be in time for Christmas as this isn’t celebrated in Belarus until January 7. As we did last year, we will be delivering Christmas stockings to children who would not otherwise receive a gift at all. All of the families we visit are so pleased; they are in awe that people would come all the way from England to bring them presents and it is amazing to see how much pleasure the visit gives, not only to the children but to the families in general. Rarely can we leave a home without them trying to press us to eat with them or wanting to give us a gift in return, even when they have nothing. I remember one time when a lady tried to give me her jacket as she had nothing else to give but wanted so much to show her appreciation. The strapline of the charity is Giving Hope to Live and small acts such as this, together with bringing the children to the UK for health respite holidays, go such a very long way to show people that there can be a better future. We thank everyone in Stowmarket who continues to support us, individuals and organisations alike. In particular our friends at Stowmarket Football Club who took us in and treat us like family. I hope Christmas brings you everything you wish for. Elizabeth Parker: 01449 760343 www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk / FB: @Ccllmidsuffolk

Wow, where has this year gone! It’s incredible to think that this time last year a village cinema had gone from being an idea to receiving funding and all looking like it might just be possible to pull off. I feel very lucky that this has all become a reality thanks to the belief and hard work of the amazing volunteer crew and the support of everyone, especially those through the doors. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible.

Our Christmas showing on 1 December of Elf, complete with craft tables before and a visit from the man in red after, may have already happening when you read this edition. We will also have had the cake sale for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH). As requested, we start the new year with Yesterday (12a). Featuring music by The Beatles and with some of Yesterday being filmed in Suffolk, it should be a very good way to kick off 2020. In February we will bring you Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Spall in Mrs Lowry & Son (PG), a portrait of the artist LS Lowry and the relationship with his mother, who tries to dissuade him from pursuing his passion. In March we will celebrate our first anniversary with Bohemian Rhapsody (12a), the story of the legendary British rock band and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid. We cannot wait to show Downton Abbey. As soon as they announce when it will be licensed to village cinemas we will confirm when we will be showing it. Please don’t forget to add our future screening dates to your diary: 26 January, 23 February, 29 March, 26 April and 31 May. For those of you who haven’t heard of Great Blakenham Cinema, we are a not-for-profit run purely by volunteers with the aim of bringing the community together. A warm welcome awaits at Great Blakenham Village Hall, Mill Lane, Great Blakenham IP6 0NJ. Doors open at 2pm for a 2.30pm start, with free tea, coffee or squash on arrival courtesy of The East of England Co-op. While we can get more chairs out, we would hate to run out of cake!

The cost is £2 per week to include workshop materials, raffle prizes and refreshments. Our last meeting of the year is on December 2 when we will have our AGM, with our Christmas lunch the following week. The club will reconvene on February 3 and the new programme will be featured next month. For further information please get in touch with Jackie Durrant: 01449 672690

Our last meeting of the year is our Christmas meal on December 11 and we will reconvene on January 8, weather permitting of course. The programme for the new year hasn’t yet been finalised. New members are always welcome so if you would like to come along and see what goes on we will be pleased to see you. Jackie Durrant, 01449 672690

OUT & ABOUT COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES GROUP Knitting Group We meet on the first Thursday of the month from 10.30am-noon in the lounge at Alasdair Place, Claydon. The group has been busy knitting their display for the Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary’s Church, Great Blakenham and we continue to knit lap blankets for St Elizabeth Hospice and hats and blankets for the premature baby unit at West Suffolk Hospital, with more projects to come. If anyone has any wool they no longer require, it would be gratefully received at one of our meetings. Book Club We meet at 10.30am on the last Thursday of the month at The Crown in Claydon for an interesting discussion on the book we have chosen to read. We have a few spaces for new members so please feel free to come along. Meet ‘n’ Eat Lunch Club We meet in Great Blakenham Parish Room at noon on the first Friday of the month. A two course lunch is served at a cost of £4, plus the optional raffle ticket for £1. Anyone wishing to attend but who has difficulty with transport can arrange a lift by contacting one of the following: The Rev Carl – 833542; Ann – 831031; Pauline – 830723; Dorothy – 830906. Please Note: The December lunch, which is the Christmas meal, is fully booked with no further spaces available. Gipping Valley Art Society We meet in Gt Blakenham Parish Room every Tuesday from w1-4pm. We are a small, friendly group, from beginners to amateurs, and take our own materials and have our own projects. Help is always on hand from our president, Mike Wootton. At present we are preparing our display for the Christmas Tree Festival and will also have a table at the Christmas Fayre in the Parish Room on Saturday 7 December, with a selection of our paintings for sale at affordable prices. In the better weather we sketch outdoors. We are looking forward to our Christmas meal which will be held at The Chequers. If you are interested in joining our group we have a few spaces available. The cost is £3 per week, which includes refreshments. Please phone Ann (831031) or Margaret (830135) for further information. Walk ‘n’ Talk Group Weather permitting, we meet at 10.30am on the second Thursday of the month in The Crown car park and go for a walk lasting around 1.5 hours around local footpaths and bridleways. All welcome, together with dogs. On behalf of all of the groups we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

BRAMFORD TREFOIL GUILD This month we meet on Monday 9 December for our Christmas meal. In November, Ann, one of our members, led us in making Christmas cards, a simple design but I don’t think any two looked the same. We meet on the first Monday of the month at Bramford Guide and Scout HQ, Ship Lane, Bramford. Our next home meeting will be 6 January. Visitors are very welcome to attend. If you would like to know more please contact Linda: 01473 462317

ORWELL PROBUS CLUB We meet for lunch at Ipswich Sports Club on Henley Road on the second Thursday of each month and usually a speaker entertains us afterwards. Probus clubs provide an opportunity for active retired or semi-retired gentlemen to attend regular meetings and enjoy the camaraderie of likeminded people who appreciate similar interests. We have social events, outings and holidays which, of course, include spouses, partners and friends.

HENLEY MOTHERS’ UNION The nativity figures are ready to come out of their boxes, waiting to be held and to be part of so many families. As in past years there will be two cribs moving around Henley, one to the families of Class 1 at the primary school, the other will be passed around the village. Each family is able to keep a sheep and for those who knit this flock of cuddly little sheep we say a big thank you; it is appreciated so much. If you would like the opportunity for the crib to visit your home during Advent please contact us. During the year we have held regular evening meetings on the second Monday of the month, sometimes with a speaker, at other times led by members of the group on subjects that reflect the objectives of the MU. We also have enjoyed a few afternoon meetings and had many occasions when we have been able to meet other MU members at events and services. We are a warm friendly group and welcome any visitors or new members with open arms; please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to know more. For any information please contact Clare: 01473 832808 On October 25 we gathered to say goodbye to our great friend Irene Nutton at a Service of Thanksgiving in Henley Church, a place where she felt at home, a place she loved. There was a great deal of joy and peace felt throughout the service, which brings to mind one of the hymns we sang… Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy. Wherever Christmas may take you, or whatever your circumstances may be, may your homes and your hearts by full of joy and peace this festive season. Alex Pratt

ORWELL DECORATIVE & FINE ARTS SOCIETY Our talks cover a broad spectrum of art and are delivered within a relaxed and welcoming environment. On November 6 we enjoyed a lively and interesting talk by writer, lecturer and broadcaster Daniel Snowman on the impact the Hitler emigres had on British artistic and cultural life. The last talk before our winter break is Pantomime: A Very British Treat by Giles Ramsay on December 4. Giles is an independent theatre director and producer. He combines academic analysis with hands-on experience to bring a unique insight to the world of the theatre. Our programme will resume on February 5 with a talk by Aliki Braine titled Same Old Same New. We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Meetings begin at 2pm and last about an hour, with refreshments available from 1.30-2pm. Guests and non-members are welcome provided we have available space. Exceptionally popular lectures will have a visitor limit of 20 so please contact Wendy Robbins in advance to check if there is available space: 01394 823807 For the latest events and news please visit: www.orwelldfas.org.uk

ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS LARGE OR SMALL Book your stall (£7.50 each) today for the Barley Mow Christmas Fayre at Witnesham on December 22 by calling: 01473 785395 The fayre will open at noon with Santa’s Grotto to keep the children happy, a variety of stalls for last minute Christmas presents or extra treats, food and horse and cart rides.

OUT & ABOUT / SPORT TALES FROM THE 19TH HOLE STOWMARKET & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB We don’t hold a meeting in December, but will enjoy our Christmas celebrations at Stowmarket Golf Club instead.

BRAMFORD TENNIS CLUB Festive Fun on the Tennis Court – #GOHITIT It’s great to see our courts in consistent use even at this time of year for winter league matches, mini tennis squads, adult cardio squads and ladies tennis. We’ve come a long way in just a couple of years and now have more than 100 members. On court tennis activities continue throughout the winter (weather permitting) so why not come along and have a go yourself? For Juniors (Monster Smash and Mini Tennis) Our annual Monster Smash parent/child doubles competition was a great success with 16 family doubles teams taking part. We saw some excellent serving and rallies along the way and everyone enjoyed the food and prizes. Our Mini Tennis squads have also now resumed on Tuesdays with Mini Tennis RED (ages 5-7) from 4-4.45pm and Mini Tennis ORANGE (ages 8-11) from 4.45-5.30pm.

For several years Hintlesham Golf Club has been our Christmas venue with previously poor weather having impacted on many a good golfer, and plenty of average ones too. We hoped that a September booking would gift pleasant autumnal conditions – instead the forecast was for terrible conditions with multiple flood warnings across the county. While keen, all had prepared for a soaking and hoped for sufficient hot water for welcome showers afterwards. Although the gusty wind was challenging all afternoon, miraculously we stayed dry. The heavy black clouds appeared to part like the Red Sea until about two minutes after the last group was in, at which point they closed and a deluge ensued for the rest of the evening. Ivan must have had a special word with the man upstairs, for which we were all truly grateful. Club member Peter would pass on his course knowledge to his playing partners, Grahame, Keith and Tim, but would they be able to take advantage of this extra information? Peter advised that they were in the process of some course improvements and changes, one of which was to upgrade the bunkers. As someone who visited more than his fair share of these, my hope is improvements will involve filling in and turfing over them. Steve played with the two Terrys. This trio were buzzing around the course, indicating few wasted shots. The smart money was on one of them winning. Terry A had accumulated 32 points after just 13 holes; at that rate a score over 40 was envisaged. Meanwhile low handicapper Terry L managed to par an impressive 15 holes. The scores below will show how they fared. Brian had a disappointing front nine but picked up well, scoring into the low 20s on the back nine. A big factor in this was getting his driver warmed up – it was no surprise therefore that he won the LD prize. The best on the NP 13th was Keith, very impressive, particularly in the wind.

For Adults Winter league matches are now underway so if you are interested in some team tennis please contact Graham, our team captain, on 07981 842517 to discuss. Ladies tennis group runs at 6.30pm every Tuesday and cardio tennis takes place on Thursday evenings at 7.10pm. Or why not come and join us for a hit and a minwced pie at our Christmas Tennis 3s event on Sunday 15 December (see events listing on our website for details)

The high standard of golf was evident with nine players scoring above 30. Lawrance junior ended up being the best Terry of the day with a stunning 39 points which, on any other day, would see him a clear winner. However, he was eased into runner-up spot by his father. Keith showed that age and experience, and listening to some local course knowledge here and there, would enable a strong finish and best of the bunch on count-back.

Club Awards Massive congratulations to our adult and junior annual club award winners who were nominated by their fellow players or coaches in recognition of their effort and determination in improving their tennis skills over the last year.

We have two more outings in 2019, but publishing dates mean they will be reported upon in future 2020 editions. It seems too early to say it, but on behalf of the HOGS may I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.

To find out more at about any of the items mentioned above please visit:

Individual scores were: Keith & Terry L 39, Peter 36, Mike, Simon & Terry A 35, Steve 34, Tim 32, Brian 31, Grahame 29, Nick 27, Shaun 25, Alan 22.

SCHOOLS CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL

HENLEY PRE-SCHOOL

Our annual WOW Event took place at the beginning of November. The curriculum was suspended so that all students could take part in activities designed to stretch, challenge, motivate and equip them with essential life skills which will help them on their journey through high school and beyond.

As Christmas approaches we are busy practising songs for our performance and making a range of festive crafts. We’re also looking forward to a visit from Ben Austwick who will be playing his guitar to the children and helping them practise their Christmas songs. The Rev Carl Melville will also be visiting us to share the Christmas story and bringing along props and outfits for the children to wear.

Year 7 had a fabulous time camping at Mersea Outdoor Centre in Essex where they took part in adventurous activities such as the high ropes and assault course, as well as art, PE and drama activities, all designed to develop the four Cs: Confidence, Compassion, Challenge and Conscientiousness. Years 8-10 ‘wowed’ us all with their productivity and commitment to their enterprise tournament. In teams of 20, students had to work together to create and design a school house system which was pitched to a panel of judges the following day. They had to consider how it would benefit the school and work in relation to competitions, sports, rewards and uniform, as well as coming up with names, colours, logos and designing their new website page. Year 11 demonstrated great maturity and focus as they prepared for the next step of their education/training. They spent a day at a college/sixth form of their choice and took part in a Learning About Work Day. Employers from local businesses were invited into school to act as mentors, working with small groups and teaching them about employer expectations when applying for jobs. Year 11 impressed our visitors with the way they conducted themselves throughout the day. I would like to say a special thank you to all our guest speakers who worked with students across Years 8-11; your support was vital in making WOW Week the success it was. Now that the festive season is upon us, I hope you will be able to join us at our Mince Pies and Music event on Monday 16 December from noon2pm and our Christmas Concert on Tuesday 17 December at 7pm. Tickets for both are on sale at reception. The PTA is also holding a Quiz Night on Thursday 5 December, 7pm at the school. To book your table please email: admin@claydonhigh.com

We wish everyone Happy Christmas and New Year. Don’t forget that our Annual Quiz and Curry Night will be on Friday 7 February. We are a small, rural, friendly setting based at Henley Community Centre. We pride ourselves, on having a high ratio of staff to children and therefore providing the maximum care and learning for the children. Our highly trained staff continue regular training to build their knowledge further. We provide an extensive range of resources and activities to suit all ages and abilities, ensuring all levels of development and play within the EYFS are explored. Parents play the most important role in children’s lives so we work closely together to ensure we work in partnership. We also hold stay and play sessions each term that are very well supported by parents/carers. We currently have spaces available. We accept eligible 30hr funded children (the codes must be in place the term before they are needed). Children can join us from the age of two and we accept government funded and fee paying children. We are open term time only, from 9am-3pm. We have a well-supported Facebook page that provides lots of information and you can see what the children have been doing. It’s also another way to contact the setting directly. For further information please call 01473 833848 during session time (9am-3pm) or email me at: enquiries@henleypreschool.com Bridget and the team

Finally, I would like to thank staff, parents, carers, governors and the wider community for their support this term and wish everyone a Happy Christmas. I look forward to keeping you updated with all our news in the New Year. Headteacher Ms Maéve Taylor

“That’s serious!” was my immediate reaction to the Engine Malfunction message that appeared on my dashboard recently. I was thankful I wasn’t on a long journey far from home with what seemed a major issue. I went to good old Google to see if other owners of the same vehicle as mine had experienced the same message and if there was any cure. It turns out that the one message could refer to a whole host of possible causes. The car wouldn’t be able to fix itself but needed help from outside and these days that means connecting up to a computer for a diagnosis. Once the fault was found the mechanic was able to sort it out. Problem solved! The Advent season is really the message on my life, not an engine malfunction, but a heart malfunction. The heart in this case is who I am, not the physical organ, and I needed to know what the issue was. The Bible tells me that others have the same issue, in fact I read, ‘All have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God’. Sin is the problem and I cannot cure myself from it. However, the good news, which I read about, is that there is a cure available for everyone and this was the reason for Jesus coming that first time just over 2,000 years ago. He came to rescue us from our sin through His death and resurrection. Knowing the diagnosis of my heart, I went to the One who had the cure. Unlike the garage though, I didn’t have to pay the bill, it was a gift; Jesus paid it all at the cross! Advent starts on Sunday 1 December; why not join us to find out more. You are also very welcome to our Craft and Christmas Carols on Sunday 22 December at 3.30pm.
