NEWS ANNUAL CLAYDON & BARHAM QUIZ NIGHT On October 5, 13 teams took part in the annual Claydon & Barham Quiz for the John West Memorial Trophy. This remains a popular event and all teams were tested on various subjects including sport, general knowledge, history and music. For the second year in a row the winners were Universally Challenged with 103 points. Runners-up were We Thought This Was Speed Dating and 4+2, with both these teams scoring 92 points. Universally Challenged also received the trophy, which I presented to Linda Carley. The prize money for the three top teams of £50, £30 and £20 was kindly provided by Claydon & Barham Community Trust. The raffle raised the sum of £169.73 and along with the entry fee, a total of £247.73 will be sent to the East Anglian Children’s Hospice. My thanks, as always, go to those whose help makes this event successful – Tim who helped prepare the music round, Andy for the picture round, Mandy for scoring, and to Roger, Ann, Jenny and Mick for co-ordinating the raffle. Also thanks to Jean Ballard for being the contact point for the teams. Thank you, once again, for your continued support by taking part. The 2019 annual quiz has been set for Friday, October 11 and will be advertised in further editions nearer the time. Neil West
Dear Fellow Residents of Claydon and Barham, When my family moved here 45 years ago, we purchased the field adjacent to the nursing home as a buffer to retain the countryside around the village. While on many occasions we have been approached by developers to pursue planning permission, we have retained it as agricultural land. Recently, due to a change of law which enables councils to compulsory purchase land at less than market value, we have been advised to include it in the area available for development, so I am declaring an interest. Years ago, each parish was asked to produce a Neighbourhood Development Plan. This was a complicated and time-consuming document, which was only completed by 10 per cent of villages. I understand our village has now started it, and will complete the document, which will take time (two-four years). Without this document in place we are an easy target for land promoters. These are difficult decisions for councils and central government bodies to make fairly, as they are receiving a huge amount of money, land, and promised new and improved facilities for communities in lieu of planning permissions. The developers originally approached our council with a plan on the cutting land of 1,200 houses, which has now reduced to 270 houses, temporarily, but please don’t be fooled. Once Church Lane, Barham has been crossed, there is nothing to stop further development of the 1,200 houses taking place in the future. The road that leads to the west will one day be a new access road to the next development of 800 houses just like at Ely Road. Whilst not wishing to say ‘not in our backyard’, the addition of 1,200 houses to our two villages with 1,700 at present, is a very badly planned addition. I am pleased to say that the council was asked to visit the suggested development by the chair of the Suffolk County Council hearing. This they should do, in term time, to experience the full volume of traffic in rush hour. The lanes are not equipped for the huge modern agricultural machinery and the increasing need for community transport such as coaches

We are delighted to see that the latest traffic survey carried out under instruction of Barham Parish Council by ThaT Consultants, which is more accurate as it was not carried out in the school holidays, shows the severe impact this will have on the roads, making them completely unsustainable by 2020, even without any of the developments going ahead. This matter must be addressed before any planning approvals are granted. This is now being re-reviewed by SCC highways as they see this as a major problem. Recent changes to the NPPL The written ministerial statement on housing land supply and Neighbourhood Plans is confirmed in a new paragraph 14: following a referendum, if a Neighbourhood Plan meets the local housing requirement and the local authority has at least a three-year housing land supply (albeit, not a five-year supply), then development proposals which conflict with the Neighbourhood Plan should be refused. However recently there has been some positive news from the council: During the period in which these massive developments were being proposed, MSDC could not demonstrate a five-year plan, which gave developers an opportunity to take advantage and try to push through these unsustainable projects. However, MSDC can now demonstrate a 6.5 year housing land supply. Meanwhile in Barham and Claydon the large applications have faced rigorous and organised opposition. That teamwork has resulted in the local applications being either refused or deferred from a point of time when MSDC couldn’t demonstrate a five-year land supply, to now being heard in the future, when they can demonstrate a five-year land supply. So whilst other towns and villages now face having the bulldozers and builders moving in, we here in Barham and Claydon still live to fight another day, and under a much improved new set of rules rather than the old NPPF/no five-year land supply criteria. NEWS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY Friday, December 14 at Claydon and Barham Community Centre This very popular event has raised in excess of £5,000 for local charities under the leadership of Roger Colthorpe since 2006. The event is now being managed by Peter Avis. Music is supplied by DJ Gary and his disco AHRICO returning by popular request. The versatility of the tunes will cover all styles and dancing opportunities. This year the food will be fish or sausage and chips. This option has been decided as the previous team of helpers have retired from such events. The ticket price is £10, available from the Cup Cake Café (Monday to Friday 8.30am-3.30pm) or the community centre at opening times. Peter is very keen to keep this party tradition up to the same standards and needs volunteers to help set tables and chairs in the hall, with decorations during the afternoon on December 14 from 4pm, to sell raffle tickets and distribute food on the evening, and to clean up after the party. Please offer your help as Peter will need support; if six to eight helpers could offer a few hours this would be greatly appreciated. Contact details: cupcakecafeclaydon@gmail.com / 01473 831805
FUNDRAISING DANCE RAISED £1,000 The annual dance in aid of Papworth Heart Hospital at Claydon & Barham Community Centre on Saturday, October 13 raised £1,000. Colin Dedman wishes to thank those who attended, gave raffle prices and donations. It was a good evening and enjoyed by everyone, many of whom were taught how to use a defibrillator.

COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLOR’S REPORT JOHN FIELD’S REPORT TO GIPPING VALLEY: September 2018 Highway flooding The flooding issue at the A14 bridge on Station Road has been fixed at last! Years of emails have paid off. Scrutiny in September The county performance report indicated that the review of highways currently underway will include ‘How utility companies co-ordinate roadworks and are held to account for their actions’. A subject dear to our hearts! It said: “this will now have to be taken forward with the Secretary of State for Transport expectation that a permit scheme is in place in Suffolk by March 2019”. At Scrutiny we decided permits should improve control significantly, so this is good news! Scrutiny of Absence Suffolk County Council has a high level of absence due to physical and mental health issues, far higher than other comparable authorities, particularly in the Fire and Rescue Service. I was concerned the issues could be due to the turmoil and stress caused by the many re-organisations that have occurred, the job losses driven by reducing budgets or just a lax management attitude. In the Fire and Rescue Service in 2017-18, 9,260 days were lost in total, 85 per cent to long term sickness. Nottinghamshire loses 2.6 per cent days to sickness, Suffolk 9.73 per cent and Warwickshire 14.55 per cent. Why the difference? In Highways the absence rate was much lower at 4.52 per cent. This is in an area which has suffered much re-organisation and therefore a lot of employment related stress, but absence is lower than average. Across the county the average is 5.38 per cent days lost, a total of 55,014 days. With staff costs at around £144m the cost of lost time must be around £7.75m. A more rigorous regime is being introduced to ensure that all sickness is genuine. It will also ensure that issues are picked up early. Staff will be supported when they have either physical or mental health problems and any underlying causes are addressed. More specialist education placements The projection is that there will be an 18 per cent rise in the number of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) between 2018 and 2020, compared to only a four per cent rise in the overall number of children. These will mostly be moderate learning difficulties, ASD and speech and language needs.
6
Suffolk cannot meet current or future demand. Many children have a long wait for specialist education or are placed far from home in expensive out-of-county placements. Suffolk will need to develop a further 300-400 places using new specialist support centres attached to mainstream schools, with some new special schools. New Care at Home model Three years ago, the county got the design of its Support to Live at Home contract very wrong. The problems mean it provides only 29 per cent of home care. It is developing a new model of home care and a new contract. This appears better, but I have doubts that the new rates offered will attract providers and people into the system. They look attractive but don’t address travelling time separately. It can be a large percentage of the task. There will be three main elements: •R esponsive: Will help when people urgently need a response. For example, a frail older person living at home has called the GP or an ambulance but is not very coherent and it is difficult to determine a diagnosis. Care may involve medication, ensuring fluids and food are taken and assessment of on-going condition. Later it will offer rehabilitation or reablement to maximise independence. •B espoke: For people with long term conditions, brain injury, recovering from a stroke, or a condition such as Parkinson’s and may require live-incare to be able to remain in their own home. • L ocality: The main service for planned long term care. It will allow local community-based solutions to be developed. The county will work with the 85 care providers in Suffolk. It will not seek to move people between providers or reduce the budget. District Council Issues MSDC lost an appeal to a developer who claimed that they had not applied the new version of the Government’s Planning Framework properly and had miscalculated the number of approved deliverable sites. The inspector agreed so it appears our five-year land supply was short lived. Development is again less constrained. NEWS CLAYDON & WHITTON PARISH COUNCIL
Remembrance Service Because the Annual Remembrance Day falls on a Sunday this year there will be no service of remembrance in the village hall. As 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War the parish church has arranged a special event to mark the occasion which will include a Service of Remembrance in Claydon High School to which everyone is invited. Please look out for publicity which will give full details or visit: http://claydonandbarham.onesuffolk.net Webmaster Our current webmaster will be leaving at the end of November. We thank Amy for all her hard work in maintaining our website and give her our best wishes for the future and particularly for the birth of her first child in December. There will, therefore, be a vacancy for a new webmaster from December 1. If you are interested in finding out more about this voluntary position, and contributing to the life of the local community, please contact our parish clerk in the first instance. Rogue Traders Suffolk Police are warning residents to remain vigilant following reports of rogue traders operating in the area who are misleading home owners about essential maintenance work and then charging extortionate prices for which they demand cash payment. Anyone who calls at your house uninvited is a ‘cold caller’ and police advice is to: • Never agree to buy goods from, or have work done, by someone that calls unannounced at their door, or approaches them on the street. • Always get a written quotation for any work to be undertaken. • Ensure the business is reputable by checking local media advertising or the internet. • Never share your bank card or PIN number. The parish council is always interested to receive comments from residents. Opportunity is given at every parish council meeting for members of the public to speak about matters either on the agenda or that are of particular concern to them. Alternatively these can be sent in writing with your name and address to our parish clerk: Mrs C Greenan, 129 Poplar Hill, Stowmarket IP14 2AX / telephone/text 07887 459989 / claywhit@btinternet.com For the very latest news and information about village life and other items of interest please visit: http://claydonandbarham.onesuffolk.net / Twitter a/c: @claywhitpc
clo FUNDRAISING CONCERT Earlier this year we celebrated 100 years of the Royal Navy. It is fitting therefore that the Armed Forces Charity, SSAFA, is marking this anniversary year with a concert given by the local Community Light Orchestra. Better known as the CLO, the popular orchestra, under the baton of Roger Jones, will be playing a varied programme including Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Suppé’s Poet and Peasant overture, a march by former musical director Barry Salmon and a medley based on Dicken’s A Tale of Two Cities by local composers and orchestra members Carolyn Goates and Chandra Grover. Guest soloist is Brendan Bennett, pictured, a young violinist who plays with Suffolk Youth Orchestra. The concert is at St John’s Church on Cauldwell Hall Road at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 17. A retiring collection will be in aid of SSAFA. Organisers of the charity will be available during the evening with more information about their work and how support through help and donations has helped the Forces’ families.

NEWS CLAYDON AND BARHAM VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE AGM Monday, November 26, 7.30pm in Claydon and Barham Village Hall Please come along and see what we have been doing over the past year. Perhaps you have some new ideas for improvements. Everyone is welcome. Michelle Smith VHMC
HENLEY PARISH COUNCIL County Councillor John Field has stepped up to the plate with two significant pieces of support for the village this month. Our thriving bowls club was in need of a piece of specialised equipment to help lay the mat for the weekly games in the community centre; not an easy thing to do when many of the club’s members are no longer teenagers. Councillor Field made a grant from his budget and the club’s new (and surprisingly expensive) piece of kit is in regular use. The photo shows Councillor Field (centre) with bowls club members and their new equipment. On another front, after much discussion with all interested parties, the parish council has decided to go ahead with legally enforceable parking restrictions on both sides of Ashbocking Road outside the school. Readers will know this has been a long-standing concern in the village and recently the majority of school users have been parking in the community Ccentre car park and other spaces so that the main road doesn’t get dangerously congested at school drop-off and pick-up times. This has come about as a result of the green-cone Respect Zone, and also much encouragement of parents and carers by the school. The new yellow lines to be installed by Highways on both sides of the road will take the process a step further. The design will leave a couple of dropoff spaces near the school, but stopping on the yellow lines will be illegal between 8.30 and 9.30am and 2.30 and 4.30pm. The school is fully in support of the plan and the parish council very much hopes that, as a result, parking at the community centre or elsewhere will become the normal way of coming to and leaving the school, making the whole area safer and easier for all road users.
BARHAM PARISH COUNCIL Following the Corporate Manager of Waste Services for MSDC’s attendance to the parish council meeting on Monday, October 1, the council took the opportunity to ask about recent disruption to services and plans for the future. As the surrounding villages have been increasing in size and a demand for the services has increased, Oliver Faiers confirmed that they would be liaising with the company that provides the bin collection service on behalf of MSDC. They can see there is a need to look into the area with the potential to make changes. Oliver took the time to explain that they have been facing issues in some areas with inconsiderate parking, which makes it difficult for the bin lorry to pass enabling them to collect bins in a timely manner. MSDC have assured the council that if your bin is not collected on the stated day (usually a Thursday unless it’s a bank holiday) then it will be collected the next working day (Friday) and in some worst-case scenarios this could even be the following Monday. However, they have asked that residents leave their bins out so that they are assured of being collected. Please remember to have your bins out by 6.30am on the day of collection. The council also informed Oliver Faiers that the bins do not tend to be placed back on the resident’s property instead left blocking the paths. Oliver has said he will also feed this back to the company. Unfortunately, our webmaster will be finishing in post at the end of November to become a first time mummy; we wish her all the best at this exciting time. We are therefore looking for someone who has the time and passion to take over. If you feel you would like to take on this voluntary role, please contact either the Barham or the Claydon & Whitton Rural parish clerks to show your interest. A reminder that our parish clerk has changed her working schedule. She will be working on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between the hours of 9.30am and 2pm. Any queries or concerns you may have at other times please feel free to email or leave an answerphone message using the details below and the clerk will respond as soon as she can. SnOasis PARISH ALLIANCE (SPA) In the autumn of 2016, Onslow Suffolk Ltd put in an application to Mid Suffolk District Council for SnOasis Reserved Matters to be considered – Planning Application no. 4494/16. Full details can be found at: www.midsuffolk.gov. uk/planning-and-building/planning Our questions and comments about Reserved Matters were summarised in a document which was submitted to MSDC in the summer as the comments from the SPA and all its member parishes, giving the comments extra weight because they come from a significant number of local communities, representing over 11,000 registered voters. The SPA member parishes are Baylham, Barham, Bramford, Claydon and Whitton, Great Blakenham, Little Blakenham, Needham Market, Nettlestead and Somersham. As you know, I have endeavoured to give you regular monthly updates on the progress (or lack of it) with SnOasis Reserved Matters. However, as there is still no date for the outstanding work on Reserved Matters to be completed and for it to be considered by MSDC, the SPA have decided that we will no longer do a monthly article. Once any progress is made, we shall restart the articles and keep you updated. NEWS SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM When the longer winter nights arrive, take a fresh look at your home security and remind yourself of how to stay as safe as possible when out and about. At home • Keep front and back doors locked at all times and keep keys and valuables out of sight and reach from cat flaps, letterboxes, and downstairs doors and windows. • If you’re out in the evening make sure you leave a light on and draw the curtains. If it’s dark before you get home, use timer switches to turn on energy-saving lights. • Light up your front door with dusk to dawn lighting – make sure it’s visible from the street. • Make sure your home is visible from the street by keeping bushes and fences less than one metre high at the front of your property. • Don’t forget about garages, sheds and outbuildings – make sure they’re locked and secure too. • Try not to leave your house in silent darkness. Just leaving a radio on could make a potential burglar think twice. • Never leave a spare key outside your house; burglars know all the usual hiding spots. • Keep bins away from windows when they’re not being used as they can be used as a climbing aid for burglars. • Consider joining or setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Find out more about Neighbourhood Watch in Suffolk at: www.suffolknwa.co.uk

Out and about • Plan ahead before you go out. Know where you’re going, how you’ll get there, and how you’ll get back. Let someone know where you’re going, and be prepared for a change of plan. • Keep your purse or wallet and keys close and secure. Only take out essential items, and if you can leave valuables at home, do. • When you’re out, always walk with confidence, and stick to well-lit, busy areas, using the route you know best. • Avoid quiet or badly-let alleyways, subways or isolated car parks. Walk down the middle of the pavement if the street is deserted. • Remain aware of your surroundings – don’t walk along texting, making a phone call or listening to music. As well as being distracting, this advertises your valuable to criminals. • Trust your instincts – if you don’t feel safe then change your route, remembering to stay in well-lit and busy areas. Don’t be tempted to take short cuts. • Be a good friend and stay safe by sticking together. Always avoid walking alone at night. • If you regularly walk home in the dark, get a personal attack alarm – they are widely available and inexpensive. • If you regularly jog or cycle, vary your route and times you go out, particularly if you go alone. Try to avoid wooded or remote areas and stick to well-lit roads, or main paths and open spaces. Stay fully alert of your surroundings and don’t use headphones. It’s a really rewarding experience and the benefits to the children are enormous. If you are interested please call or email for further details.

We are starting to build a really good stock of evening wear for that special big night out during the festive season. Why spend a fortune when you can pick up something ‘nearly new’ instead?

Father Frost Christmas Stocking Appeal Following the success of the Christmas present delivery last year we are expanding our program for 2018. On December 28 three people will travel to Belarus for nine days to deliver presents to children who will otherwise not receive anything (and who will never have a had a Christmas present before together), with visits to hospitals and social shelters. We will also be holding a party for approximately 30 children who will be brought in from areas too remote for us to visit during the normal distribution round. We will be taking our very own Santa Claus with us so the children will have a real English Christmas experience. To make transporting the gifts easier this year we are asking people to fill a Christmas stocking for a child as stockings can be layered for packaging. Last year was quite challenging with the many different shapes and sizes of donated parcels! The stockings will be personally delivered and we will do our utmost to try and bring you home a photograph of your stocking being given to a specific child. We have recently acquired a supply of Christmas stockings at really low prices which we will be happy to pass on to anyone if required. Many thanks to all who continue to support our program. OUT & ABOUT ORWELL DECORATIVE & FINE ARTS SOCIETY HENLEY MOTHERS’ UNION
On Wednesday, November 7, Dr Claire Walsh will present a talk entitled Tamara de Lempicka – Mistress of Art Deco.
Mothers’ Union has a long history of campaigning on behalf of women and families, and recently led a national campaign against the commercialisation of children – to restrict advertising targeted at young children. Each year Mothers’ Union joins the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence to raise awareness of gender based violence in all forms, in all societies. Our group will have an evening meeting dedicated to this campaign during November.
Tamara de Lempicka dazzled Paris artistic circles in the 1920s and 30s and seduced with her stylish portraits. These heady years saw her immortalise the atmosphere of wealth and decadence of Paris. Other painters oscillated between Cubism and Fauvism, but de Lempicka was one of the few to be able to embody the decorative style of Art Deco in her paintings. Stunningly beautiful, she engaged in the world of fashion and photography, as well as presenting herself as the quintessential modern, independent young woman. She was glamorous and notorious, but her extraordinary talent confirmed her reputation as one of the most iconic painters of her generation.
We will be at Henley Christmas Fayre on Saturday, December 8, with free activities for children, so please come along. Next meetings Monday, November 12, 7.30pm: 16 Days of Activism at Irene Nutton’s home Monday, November 26, 2pm: Afternoon Fellowship at Liz Tubby’s home Monday, December 10, 7.30pm: Christmas Party at Jane Parker’s home If you would like to know more about Mothers’ Union, come to one of our meetings or visit: www.musuffolk.org.uk For more details contact Clare Thomas: clare.thomas@btinternet.com / 01473 832808
Bread and Circuses is the title of our talk on Wednesday, December 5 and will be given by Libby Horner, a freelance art historian, curator, film producer, lecturer and writer. Guests and non-members are welcome provided we have enough space. Exceptionally popular lectures will have a visitor limit of 20 spaces. Please contact Wendy Robbins in advance on 01394 823807 to check if there is available space. For the latest events and news please visit: www.orwelldfas.org.uk
HENLEY WI After the business of the evening, we were entertained and delighted to welcome Jason Salisbury from Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses. He began by giving us a biographical account of his life and how, though not originating from a farming background, he gravitated towards his chosen career while educating himself and gaining professional qualifications along the way. This led to him becoming a well-known expert in the field of artificial insemination of cattle. As he progressed his career in farming, he was unfortunately made redundant which prompted him to evaluate his family’s future. Consequently, Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses was formed in 2004. Together with his wife, they began experimenting and making their own branded cheese which developed into their present day products which they sell both locally, nationally and internationally. We were treated to samples which were delicious for those with appetites. Some of us would like, in due course, to visit the farm. Ladies, young and old, please come and give us a try! We meet at Ropes Hall War Memorial Community Centre, Twelve Acre Approach, Kesgrave IP5 1JF. The start time is 7.15pm. Our next meeting is on November 27 when Hugh Belsey will talk about his work in cataloguing the works of Thomas Gainsborough. Hugh is a renowned art historian, being an expert on Fiona Bruce’s television programme Fake or Fortune. He has spent the last 14 years researching Gainsborough’s work, contacting owners, tracking down and researching paintings. This has taken him all over the world and in his talk Hugh will tell us about this challenging project. There is no meeting in December so the next one is on January 15 when Mark Mitchels will be talking about the River Deben. Application forms are available from the school and the closing date is 1 May 2019. Watch out for more information about the opportunity to visit our nursery later in the school year.

On Wednesday, September 26 we welcomed over 500 prospective parents/ carers and their children to our school for our annual open evening. Following a short presentation, visitors were able to tour the school and experience our fantastic resources and facilities. Staff and students were on-hand to showcase their work and visitors took part in various activities including exploding Jelly Babies in Science, French and Spanish food tasting in Languages, a rowing challenge in PE and much, much more. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our 200 plus Claydon High School student helpers who helped to make the evening such a success. Much of the feedback I received from visitors commented upon how helpful, friendly and polite our students were. In other areas of the school, the PE department has had an eventful start to the term with football, netball and table tennis fixtures and a cross country competition. Year 10 GCSE PE students also had the opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills when they ran a successful Year 6 sports morning for over 150 students from our feeder primary schools. A range of activities were on offer, including table tennis, football, netball and fitness and rowing challenges. Our Year 10 leaders made the sessions really fun and competitive and were a credit to the school. Year 11 students have been particularly busy with various activities including a Business Studies trip to Colchester Zoo, where students learnt more about the zoo as a business, focussing on how staff are organised and understanding their job roles. Languages students travelled to London to visit Westminster University to find out about studying languages at degree level as well as visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum where students had the chance to enjoy a range of collections including the much acclaimed Frida Kahlo exhibition. Design and Technology students visited the Design Museum in London which included a hands-on workshop with their on-site designers. While the primary school awaits their carpark we remain busy at the end of the day with parents/carers collecting from both schools. I would like to assure the local community that we request drivers not to arrive too early and to be mindful of local residents. For health and safety reasons we cannot open our gates earlier as students are crossing the playground which is used for parking. Finally, as I write this article, WOW Week is nearly upon us and I look forward to sharing all of the wonderful activities our students will have experienced in December’s edition. Please watch this space! If you would like to visit the school and see us in action, then please come along to one of our open mornings. The next one is on Wednesday, November 14. Please telephone my PA, Ms J Saunders, on 01473 836110 to book a place. Headteacher Maéve Taylor

SCHOOLS / SPORT STONHAM ASPAL C OF E VA PRIMARY SCHOOL Welcome back to the 2018-19 school year and a very warm welcome if you are joining us as a new parent/carer this year. The children are excited about being back at school, or joining us properly. They are full of stories of their holidays as well as catching up with their friends. Over the summer holidays we have been very lucky to be able to refurbish several areas of the school. Lots of adults have contributed to this work. Mrs Robinson has worked very hard to coordinate all the different areas and work forces. Miss Simpson has overseen the library, Mrs Corsie the playground. Mrs Garnham has had a busy summer ensuring all had access and that the school was cleaned and ready for the new school year. I think you will agree that it has been a great team effort with super results. Our wrap-around care facilities look amazing including stunning artwork by Mr Clifford and the space is now truly multi-purpose as it can be used for WAC, for small group work and for cooking. Our library has had a wonderful makeover as well; thank you to Miss Simpson for the coordination of this and Mr Clifford for his amazing artwork. It now has a woodland theme and lots of other features. A book swap system is to be introduced for the children very soon. Our playground has a wonderful collection of new markings; thank you to Mrs Corsie for planning these spaces. It is aimed at encouraging children to be more active in their play and also to use the outside space for their learning.
HENLEY PRE-SCHOOL As a committee run pre-school we held our annual general meeting in October. We have a strong committed team who continue to keep the pre-school functioning to a high standard. So far this term we have been exploring autumn through nature walks and collecting natural materials for our craft activities. We have made bread in the shape of hedgehogs and the children worked hard kneading and shaping their dough. Halloween was fun with pumpkin carving and spider biscuits and this month we look forward to Diwali and Bonfire Night. Christmas will be celebrated with a trip to the New Wolsey Theatre to see The Ballard of Rudy. We are a small, rural and friendly setting based at Henley Community Centre. We pride ourselves on high levels of staff to children ratios and therefore providing the maximum care and learning for the children. All staff are highly trained and continue with regular training to build their knowledge further. We provide an extensive range of resources and activities to suit all ages and abilities, ensuring all levels of development and play within the EYFS are explored. Parents play the most important role in children’s lives so we work closely together to ensure we work in partnership. We also hold stay and play sessions each term that are very well supported by parents/carers. Session places are currently available. We accept eligible 30-hour funded children plus two and three-year-old funded. We are open term time only. For further information please call 01473 833848 during session time (9am-3pm) or email Bridget Wyatt, our manager, at: enquiries henleypreschool.com
The play equipment itself was due to be refurbished over the holidays, a joint effort by the PTA and school. The tower and wobbly bridge are to be replaced and a few other parts are being added. Sadly, the suppliers let us down and could not fit us in during the summer holidays so this work is now planned in for the October half-term. Are you deciding which school you should send your child to? We think you would choose our school. We are extremely proud of what we achieve. We have been recognised by the diocese as ‘Outstanding’ and by OFSTED as a ‘Good School’. We have also been recognised by the Department for Education for our excellent work with closing the gap in attainment for our vulnerable groups of children ensuring that all our children achieve good results. If you would like to find out more about our school please come along to our open morning on Thursday, November 15 from 9.30-11.30am, or on Monday, November 19 from 1.45-3pm. If you are unable to make these dates please feel free to contact the school office and book in another time that is convenient to you. Headteacher Mrs Sharon Waldron

Tony Adams Gets A Brace! Tony Adams, Claydon FC’s treasurer, groundsman, fundraiser and café tea pourer, received his pair of awards on Tuesday, October 2 at Ipswich Town FC. He won the Volunteer of the Year award for all of the work he puts into Claydon Football Club and the amount of time he gives to allow others to play. His second award of the evening was as joint runner-up in the Groundsman of the Year competition which he won the previous year.
Fresh from his tour of Australia, the comedian is to take the floor at Ipswich Town’s Sir Bobby Robson suite on Sunday, December 16.
The club executive, players, parents and supports would like to thank Tony for his tireless work at the club and also for the fantastic pitches. Under-7 Sponsorship The new batch of Under-7s have been sponsored by Chris Lamb Dairies Limited and Tony Adams. The two sponsors have allowed the team to be kitted out in a new home kit with numbers and club badge ready for the upcoming festivals. We have a growing number of Under-7 players (currently 21) and this is great news for the club and local football as we bring the next generation on. The players, parents and coaches would like to thank Chris and Tony for the sponsorship and kit.
His 90-minute set will feature a new mix of tales, stand-up and anecdotes ready for Christmas and the New Year. Topics will include voluntary work, royalty, family Christmases past and present, plus Suffolk and Essex. Griff said: “It’s a time for giving and this will be a wonderful way of helping EACH, right in the heart of Ipswich, on the eve of Christmas.” Georgia Memory, EACH Suffolk Fundraising Assistant, said: “This promises to be a great evening of festive laughter. I know last year’s show at Ufford Park Hotel went down very well, so we’re really excited Griff’s supporting us once again.” Griff has previously praised staff of EACH for their “remarkable, inspired and very difficult work” to support children with lifethreatening conditions and their families. The evening at Ipswich Town will begin at 6pm, with welcome drinks and canapés. Griff will start performing at 7pm. There will be theatre-style seating.
Under-8 Sponsorship The Under-8s have been sponsored by AMS Air Conditioning for the season and the management, players and parents would like to thank all at AMS Air Conditioning, and especially Andy Soznowski, for the support. The players have been kitted out in new full match kit, jackets and training tops.
Tickets are £29.50 and available online from www. each.org.uk/comedy until Friday, December 14 or until sold out. For further information, contact: 01473 917965 / treehouse@each.org.uk

CHURCH NEWS IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME! On Sunday, October 29 at 2am the clocks will be going backward one hour from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). In 1784, American politician and inventor Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea while in Paris. In order to save on candles he suggested that people got up earlier when it was lighter. It wasn’t until 1916 that the idea was adopted in the UK. The idea came from William Willett, a builder, in 1907 when he published a leaflet called The Waste of Daylight. Being a keen golfer he would get cross at not being able to finish his games because the sun went down and there wasn’t enough light to carry on playing. Source: https:/www.bbc.co.uk/newsround

Sunday, November 24 4pm: Crib Songs of Praise, Barham Church
Remembering to turn your clock back seems to start the season of remembrance, with Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day and the birth of Jesus. These events happened in history and we cannot turn back time to change them. As we stop to remember our past, even just this year, there may be things we wish we had not said or done that we wish we could turn back time and do things differently. The story is told of a headteacher who kept a book recording the student’s behaviour, good or bad. On one particular occasion as he came out with this book, the faces of the students went pale, clearly knowing what was in there concerning each of them. The headteacher then proceeded to throw the book into a fire giving everyone a clean start for the new term. The Bible tells us that everything we have done is recorded and will be revealed at the end of time. The good news is that Jesus came to save us from our sins and give us a new start. Through His death and resurrection the way is now open to turn back to God, receive forgiveness for sins and live His way.
Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 December 10am-4pm: Festival of Light and Christmas Fayre Gt Blakenham Church and Parish Room. Refreshments served.
No doubt we will have different opinions on whether we should change our clocks like this. The advantage, I suspect, won’t be for saving candles, but potentially for finishing a golf match. So for now don’t forget if it’s not already too late to turn your clock back, but more importantly to consider what God has done for you in Jesus while we have daylight.
