A WORD FROM THE EDITOR We live in interesting times, never knowing from one day to the next what’s going to happen. I’ve been fascinated by the House of Commons debates, not so much by the content of what’s being said, but by the sheer drama of it all. At times it’s calm and relatively reasoned, but when it’s not, it’s almost unbearable. Come what may, I do think it’s important to try to keep up with what’s happening, but I’d only just got my head around the ‘backstop’ when ‘proroguing’ became the lead news story. Perhaps it will be all over before the next edition is published. Meanwhile many of us have been getting children back to school or off to college. I was an emotional wreck on the morning I dropped Jack for his first day in Year 5. I don’t suppose I was the only mum who cried her way to work that day, but we quickly get back into the routine of it all and the summer holiday becomes a distant memory. In fact it’s shocking how quickly that happens! When Jack had to write about the best day of the summer, he wrote about the very last day when we had a couple of friends over to build a den and print initials on t-shirts using grated crayons. Admittedly we didn’t have a fancy holiday, but it seems he’d forgotten about all the lovely days out we had, our week in Ireland and all the clubs and camps he’d been to. Grating crayons won the day! Instructions available on request. Jack is a bit of a mad scientist and I don’t think his grandpa or his dad will object if I say it’s in his blood. The number of weird and wonderful experiments we’d done recently, from avocado ice-cream that tastes like chocolate (it didn’t!) to slime made using liquid detergent and cornflour. And my least favourite, instant ice-cream in a bag. Oh it might sound like a great idea, but when you end up with vanilla flavoured ice all over the sofa, the walls and the ceiling it loses its appeal, even if it’s quite nice to eat what’s left. Still, he’s a useful distraction from more serious issues so I think I’ll keep him! Perhaps I should ask him to invent a Brexit solution!

ETHEL MAY STEWARD 30 December 1916 – 1 September 2019 Aged 102 years, eight months and two days Bett was born at Rookery Cottages, Wenham Road, Washbrook, the youngest of five children born to Charles and Mabel Levitt. She attended Copdock School and was in the same class as Henry Steward. They were married in 1938. For a while they lived in Bramford Road, Ipswich where their son Richard was born. When Henry served his country as a soldier in the Second World War, Bett and Richard moved back to Rookery Cottages with her parents. When Henry returned from the war they moved to Westhill Bungalow where they remained for more than 40 years. This is where their second son Graham was born. Bett’s mother moved in when she became a widow. Later in life they moved to Bede in the Street, which they remembered being the old police hours. After living at Bede for a few years, they moved to The Grindle in Back Lane. When Bett was widowed she continued to live there. While in hospital following a fall when she was 99, it was decided that Bett would go to Baylham Care House, which is where Graham was also a resident. They were both looked after by wonderful caring staff. Bett sat with Graham on the day he died, January 31 this year. She leaves her son Richard, his wife Rosemary, Graham’s widow Rosanna and grandchildren Martin, Simon and Jane, and also seven great-grandchildren.

CONSTABLE COUNTRY PPG

Hello from Pc Sarah George and Pc Diane Porter. We are both now in post at Hadleigh Police Station as engagement and link officers and look forward to meeting you all over the coming months.

New Appointment System In July, PPG Vice Chair Mike Huard and I visited the GP practice at Leiston to discuss their experience of using the call back system, which they introduced early in 2018. They told us that patient feedback had been very positive. We hope that you have the same positive experience with the new system at Constable Country Practice, but if you do have any issues please let the practice manager know using the feedback forms. Alternatively you can fill in one of the PPG comment cards or email us at: constablecountryppg@gmail.com

Over the next few months we will be updating you on security, current crime trends and how to report crimes and offences. We get asked lots of questions and will make this month’s report from us more like guidance. Please report any non-urgent crime, theft, retail theft, criminal damage, hate crime and traffic collisions to 101 or report online as this is the quickest way to get hold of us: www.suffolk.police.uk/contact-us/report-something Walk a New Path Suffolk Police are recruiting at the moment. OneLife Suffolk At our July meeting we had a very informative talk by a representative of OneLife Suffolk. They are employed by the Public Health arm of Suffolk County Council to provide services to people across the county. Their services include help with losing weight, becoming more fit and active, stopping smoking, providing fun physical activities for children and young people including holiday clubs and in-school activities. Leaflets are available at the surgery and you can find out more at: www.onelifesuffolk.co.uk / 01473 718193 Getting Help to Get Active Janet Lawrence from Suffolk’s Active Wellbeing Service will be working at the practice every Thursday. Any member of staff can refer a patient. The service is free and patients will meet with Janet to discuss how they can incorporate more activity in their daily routines. Please ask for more information at either surgery. Issues with the Pharmacy at Capel Surgery We continue to receive comments on the service at the pharmacy in Capel. As you will know, it’s a separate business from the Constable Country practice. NOTES FROM THE CASE – Suffolk’s First Co-operative Pub! The nights are really drawing in now, but we have enjoyed a lovely summer that has shown The Case and Bentley at its best. I’m sure lots of very happy memories were created by some of the events we held over the summer months. These do take a lot of organising and without our dedicated committee and volunteers they wouldn’t be possible. If you have enjoyed any of these occasions and would like to find out how you could become more involved please just ask at the bar or contact the chair at: savethecase.bentley@gmail.com Our first ever Bentley Bake-Off was held on August Bank Holiday Monday and was brilliantly supported. Our cake competition winners were: Zoe Mobley – Luscious Lemon Drizzle; Lisa Klotz – Chocolate Brownies; and for the Under-16s – Skyla and Elodie for their Zebra Cake. A huge thank you goes to all who entered. We also thank those who supported our recent Macmillan Coffee Morning. It was wonderfully attended and great fun and, of course, for such an important national charity. This month you may notice there are builders at The Case. Repair work is scheduled to start to the roof over the new bay windows, but we will be open as usual throughout the work.

The ever-popular Open Mic Night will be on Tuesday 1 October. Music starts at around 8.30pm. Come along to perform or just to enjoy, you could be witnessing tomorrow’s new stars! For more details contact Dave: 07885 963882 Please note that our October quiz will be held a week late due to the Bentley Fireworks. It will take place on Saturday 2 November, starting at 8.30pm. As always teams can be up to six members, entry is £2 per person. All profit from this and the raffle will be donated to our charity of the year, FIND. The November quiz will be on the Saturday 30 November as usual. Finally, is it too early to mention Christmas? Well not if you are planning ahead. At The Case during December, Esther’s best Sunday lunches will have a distinct Christmas feel, so why not reserve a table with family or friends and have a great early Christmas lunch? 01473 805575 / www.thecasepubbentley.co.uk www.facebook.com/TheCaseBentley

News / Out & about COPDOCK AND WASHBROOK VILLAGE HALL

BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR JANE GOULD

This is the preliminary notice of the AGM of the Copdock and Washbrook Village Hall Charity on Monday 11 November at Copcock and Washbrook Village Hall.

Orwell Ward: Belstead, Chelmondiston, Freston, Tattingstone, Wherstead and Woolverstone

The charity is charged with the management of the village hall, which it owns, to the benefit of the residents of the parishes of Copdock & Washbrook and the surrounding area. Residents of the area of benefit are thereby considered to be members of the charity with the right to speak and vote at the AGM and other meetings. The committee which manages the affairs of the charity has been struggling for some years to get the numbers together to enable it to carry out its duties and this year the chairman, Des Feasey, is relinquishing his chairperson’s responsibilities after several years. All organisations in the area of benefit have the option of appointing a member to the committee which meets once every other month. This is the chance for the residents of Copdock and Washbrook to have a say in the management and operation of their village hall.

CONSTABLE COUNTRY PRACTICE Appointment System Update The practice implemented a new appointment system on September 2. We held two patient engagement events in July and have been trialling the system on Tuesdays. This has enabled us to refine the new system based on patient feedback, though it will continue to evolve over the coming weeks. Please note that there will be no pre-bookable appointments. If you need to speak to a doctor you can request that they call you the same day. If you need to be seen (about a third of all cases), the doctor will arrange for you to be seen the same day or on a future date. Patients can make an online request for a doctor to call from 7am, or phone the practice or call in to request one via a receptionist. It helps if you tell the receptionist the nature of your problem as it may be more appropriate for you to speak to our pharmacy technician or another member of our clinical team. They can also inform the doctor if your need is urgent. There may also be other NHS healthcare organisations or other clinical staff who are better equipped to address your problem or answer your query. Flu Clinics As last year, patients over-65 will be administered a different flu vaccine to those under-65. Unfortunately, there have again been delays in manufacture which means that delivery of the under-65’s vaccine is staged. This complicates the vaccination programme and we will therefore implement a similar system to last year. We will hold a number of flu clinics and will send personalised letters to every eligible patient inviting them to attend on specific dates. These letters will be sent through September and October. Please attend on the earliest date possible when you receive a letter. Please don’t attend a flu clinic if you don’t receive a letter as we may not have taken delivery of the vaccine you require. If you haven’t received a letter by the end of October and you are over-65 or believe you are eligible for a free vaccination because of your medical condition, please contact the practice.

As one of four Green councillors elected to Babergh District Council in May, I am having regular meetings with my three Green colleagues to discuss how we can raise the profile of environmental issues in all aspects of the council’s work. Of the six parishes in my ward, Chelmondiston may shortly become the first to declare a climate and wildlife emergency. It has established a working party to decide how such a declaration can be translated into positive action at parish level. Do you ever consider what happens to the contents of your black wheelie bin? In September I had the opportunity to find out when I joined a guided tour around the Energy From Waste (EfW) facility at Great Blakenham. I was favourably impressed. None of our black bin waste (averaging one tonne per household per year) is sent to landfill. It all goes to the EfW facility where it is incinerated and used to generate electricity for the national grid. When combined with domestic waste from the rest of Suffolk, along with some from Norfolk and some ‘third party’ waste, the EfW facility generates enough energy to power 39,000 homes. Stringent measures are in place to remove pollutants from the resulting gases before they are released into the atmosphere. Even the bottom ash is put to good use in road construction after unburned metal has been removed from it and sold for scrap. Incineration does, of course, produce greenhouse gases so it is always better to Reduce, Re-Use or Recycle, but some residual waste is inevitable. We were told during our tour that using the EfW facility to process our residual waste produces a 75,000 tonne per annum reduction in greenhouse gases when compared to landfill disposal.

Out & ABOUT

FUNDRAISING CONCERT AT ST PETER’S CHURCH A concert of sacred music and readings from the time of Thomas Hardy featuring The Cavendish Consort and Choir St Peter’s Church, Stutton, Sunday 27 October at 6.30pm Retiring collection for Church Funds

PENINSULAR PIX October’s film is Stan and Ollie, to be shown at 8pm on Thursday 3 October. Nostalgia for times past is always rosier than it actually was thank goodness. I remember an exasperated rotund Oliver Hardy fiddling with his tie and next to him, dear Stanley Laurel, surely an archetype model for LS Lowry’s matchstick men, his face crumpling before Ollie’s criticism. Loveable characters who made the many, many films I used to watch at Felixstowe ABC Cinema Saturday Morning Pictures, where in the early 1950s we schoolchildren ran amok for two hours. Happy days! The film deals with a time when the golden days of the comedy pair have faded and they are touring Britain in later years. Steve Coogan’s and John C Reilly’s performances are second to none. This portrayal of the creative marriage of two comic geniuses brings warmth, laughs and genuine nostalgic delight to the silver screen. The Rotten Tomatoes review gave the movie a 93 per cent thumbs up, though it also warns that there are people in the film who smoke cigarettes, so be prepared to be shocked. I know I shall enjoy watching this one, though I shall miss not being on the balcony of the cinema at 10 years of age, pretending to retch on the kids below, wishing I had some cold custard to make it more believable.

OUT & ABOUT COPDOCK & WASHBROOK RAMBLERS

COPDOCK & WASHBROOK WI

With the summer months behind us, we are keen to start walking the footpaths around the village (and elsewhere) again. We kick off our winter programme by walking the route across the Spring Brook Meadows and around Chattisham (as suggested in a recent edition of the EADT). This is partly one of our favourite walks, with the additional unknown footpaths in the neighbouring parish.

We had a well-attended group visit to Melford Hall in August. We started with afternoon tea at the cafe, followed by an extremely interesting and entertaining talk about the hall. We then were left to wander at our leisure around the hall and gardens. A visit is highly recommended if you have a spare afternoon. We had a stand at the Centenary Fair at Trinity Park in September where we did cookery demonstrations and had treats to sample relating to the cookbook we produced to commemorate our centenary year. The brilliant cookbook includes recipes from people and businesses in the villages and can be purchased from Suffolk Heritage Antiques Centre on Old London Road, Copdock. Just £6 for over 120 recipes!

Each of our rambles will be a pleasant circular route of about five miles distance lasting approximately two hours. All you need is sturdy footwear. Our friendly group will be delighted to meet you and everyone is welcome, including children and well-behaved dogs. Please do join us on Sunday 13 October, setting off from the Church Room in The Street, Washbrook at 1.30pm. For further information, contact Tina (01473 730162) or Dave (cwfootpaths@gmail.com)

STOUR VALLEY U3A On Wednesday 9 October, Jenny Gibbs will talk to us on An Englishwoman’s Life in Rural Turkey. Her stories capture a simple, serene, pastoral way of life in a Turkish mountain village unchanged for centuries, from the day she first arrived there 25 years ago to today. On November 13 Magistrate Graham Higgins will talk of Tales From The Bench. He will look at our legal heritage, particularly the part played by Suffolk. He will relate how the role of magistrates and local events have played a part in this history and will bring us up to date with an opportunity to decide how a defendant should be sentenced by briefly outlining a case. He will also include some of his unusual experiences on the bench. We have Christmas lunch instead of a meeting in December and this year it’s being held on Wednesday 11 December at the Ipswich Best Western Hotel, Copdock IP8 3JD. This is always a very popular event so an early reservation is advised. We meet at Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2.15pm. Annual membership is £12 which entitles members to attend meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. Each month The Coffee Grinders meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt CO7 6SD from 10am to noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members and gives all members the opportunity to meet the activity group leaders and the committee while enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 25 October.

There are so many good reasons to join the WI in Copdock and Washbrook. We are a diverse group, sharing a wide variety of interests and we enjoy some wonderful outings and events. There are opportunities to get involved or just come for friendship. All visitors and new members will be warmly welcomed. If you want to join us you can come to three meetings as a visitor; the first is free in order to see what we get up to before deciding if you would like to become a member. We meet at Copdock Village Hall on the third Tuesday of each month (excluding August). Please arrive around 7.15 for a 7.30pm start.

EAST SUFFOLK NATIONAL TRUST ASSOCIATION If you are a member of, or a volunteer for, the National Trust, we invite you to get more out of your membership by joining our association where a warm welcome awaits you. Our next meeting is on October 15 when Russell Bowes will give a talk entitled Digging For Victory. As the title suggests, the talk will concentrate on the Second World War years when gardens, great and small, public and private, were transformed into food gardens. Russell will be looking at the role played by the Land Girls who helped put food on the tables of the nation. He will also explore the advice, including propaganda, given to gardeners, both in print and via the radio. On November 19 Peter Lawrence will entertain us with a talk on timber framed buildings in Suffolk and Essex. We meet at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre IP5 1JF at 7.15pm. Visitors (even if not National Trust members) are welcome; the entrance fee is £3. National Trust members and volunteers can join us for £8 per year (£12 per couple at same address). We publish three newsletters a year for members and enjoy interesting day outings and other events. For more information, including details of future events and outings, contact our membership secretary: membershipesnta@gmail.com / 01473 723761 www.membershipesnta.btck.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT SESAW NEWS

CAPEL COUNTRYSIDE CLUB Our meeting in September started with a vote on an idea to merge with Suffolk Wildlife Trust Group to try and increase members and visitors to our meetings. After a lot of discussion with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, the committee decided to put the idea to members at our meeting.

Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare Stoke Road, Leavenheath CO6 4PP 01787 210888 / www.sesaw.co.uk

Everybody present unanimously voted to stay as we are, as a village club (of 35 years standing) and the majority wanted to carry on meeting on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm in Capel Methodist Church.

It’s the season of mists and yellow fruitfulness, darker evenings and the SESAW £1 at Newton Green! Yes, we are back at the village hall on School Lane on October 12 with bargains for friends, family and pets, a raffle, homemade refreshments, free entry and parking.

A talk followed on The Diary of a Norfolk Parson. This was a fascinating talk about James Woodford, a parson in the 18th century, and gave an insight into the life of the parson through his diary which he wrote every day throughout his life. It was set in the village of Weston near Norwich.

If you have some festive items to sell, how about reserving a table at the SESAW Christmas Fair? You’ll find booking forms on our website or phone 07912 077617, but hurry as places are limited. The event takes place on Sunday 17 November, 10am-3pm at the Old School, Long Melford.

Our meeting on October 8 is a talk on the Isles of Scilly and its Wildlife, which promises to be popular. On November 12 Alex Bass will give a presentation on North Norfolk Coast, its Wildlife and Landscape, which we hope will appeal to members and visitors.

We have kittens for homing, many the offspring of abandoned, unspayed cats. There are some pretty tabbies, but please give black and black & white cats a chance. We have just as much character and are as full of fun as a box of crackers!

Refreshments are available after talks with time for questions to our speakers. Visitors are always welcome.

Regular readers may recall how opinion was divided over some gangly yellow baby birds earlier this year. Some said they were ducklings, others thought they were goslings. As the photograph shows, it’s now obvious they are a handsome family of Aylesbury ducks, much admired by visitors.

BELSTEAD GARDEN CLUB AGM AND SOCIAL Wednesday 18 October, 7.15 for 7.30pm We promise that the business will be short and sweet! However, we do have at least two vacancies to fill on the committee. Please consider joining, enabling our friendly and successful club to continue into its fifth year. See you there!

The sun will be going down soon so it’s time to patrol the garden and find a snug spot in the hay stack for me, Ollie (the Black) Cat

Schools / sport EAST BERGHOLT UNITED FC As August ended, the season kicked off with games for the First Team and the A Team. The First Team lost their opening fixture and the A Team drew, but it’s early days. Our new goals have been installed in time for the first home game for the First Team on September 7. UPCOMING FIXTURES

As a setting, we are excited to share some news with you! We have joined The Curiosity Approach Accreditation, a “modern day approach to Early Years that fits perfectly into current changing technological times. Bringing curiosity, awe and wonder into early childhood and creating the thinkers and doers of the future” (taken from The Curiosity Approach 2017). This is going to take us a minimum of a year and involves much reflection and positive change. We will be changing the environment to be more natural and like an extension of home, using authentic, real resources, not plastic toys. These resources spark the curious side of the children, stimulating copious amounts of learning. If your curious side has been ignited and you would like further information about Robin’s Childcare, please contact Emma on 01473 310767 or email us at: info@robinschildcare.co.uk

BENTLEY & COPDOCK PRIMARY SCHOOLS What an explosive start to the new school year! We were straight into amazing and inspiring learning opportunities. Already this half term, we have had some wonderful enhancements to the children’s education including an Adventure Week, a visit from the fantastic Circus Ferrel (Adders and Foxes even got the opportunity to have a sleepover in the big top), sailing, hiking, archery and fencing. All the children were lucky enough to be given a free circus skills workshops by the team at Circus Ferrel and we were so pleased to watch them perform their skills during the live performances in the evenings. Our sincere gratitude goes to Circus Ferrel for their support and generosity. Years 5 and 6 travelled to the Regent Theatre and were spellbound by the Horrible Histories production, Awful Egyptians. As promised in the blurb, it was history with all the gory bits left in! But the trips don’t end there. So many more adventures are planned for this term and we feel very privileged that our small schools are so excellently placed to offer all these enhancements. Having our own mini-bus gives us the freedom to do all these things, but it’s only made possible by the support of our parents, the hard-working PTAs and the wider community. Our thanks again go to Copdock Mill for their continued support with fuel for the mini-bus. We have welcomed 20 children into Reception classes across the federation this year. It has been lovely to see them settle in so well and the whole team wish them all the very best as they start their educational journey with us. Our federation is only so good because of the children, families and team that put so much into it. We are currently recruiting for governors to join this great team and would welcome enquiries from members of the community who would be interested in finding out more about this rewarding roll. SPORT / Church News BENTLEY CARPET BOWLS Beetle Drive On Saturday 14 September we held our annual Beetle Drive to raise funds for the club. The evening was a great success with the noise level in the hall rising rapidly as the evening went on.

BENTLEY BOWLS CLUB

A big thank you must go to all the hard working people who made the evening such fun, the people who provided the very tasty supper, those who donated raffle prizes and those who ran the raffle. Not to mention the man with the whistle who kept everyone on their toes during the game.

Our outstanding club competitions were played on finals day with David Howe and Barry Ford playing the men’s two woods. Some excellent bowling saw them equal until David ran out the winner. Barry then played Ken Scoulding in the four woods, again some excellent bowling with Barry the winner. The green will be top dressed and seeded at the end of September and put to bed for the winter.

Thank you also to those who supported the evening and Harkstead Carpet Bowls Club for the loan of their beetle equipment. Headway Charity Match Bentley Carpet Bowls sent a team of four to play in the Headway Charity Match at Tattingstone on Sunday 15 September. Ten teams played in two leagues and David, Jill, Margaret and Veronica played for Bentley against Harkstead, Brantham, Tattingstone and the Mystery Mix, and won all four of their games. This meant they played in the final against Bealings, who won, meaning for the third year running Bentley were the runners-up.

The season has now finished all too soon. We did well, finishing second in the Samford League and mid table in the triples league.

Lillian Calvert, Secretary

The real winner on the day was Headway with a cheque for £556, money raised from entrance fees, the raffle, donations and refreshments. The representative from Headway was very pleased, and explained that all the money raised would go to Headway Suffolk. Thank you Tattingstone Bowls Club for arranging a great afternoon. Jill Mills, Secretary

CATHOLIC COMMENTARY We have said farewell and big thank you to our parish priest, Fr Peter Raj, who has moved to another Ipswich parish after just one year at St Marks with Holy Family, Brantham. He’s a popular priest who has scarcely had time to settle in, but it’s hardly surprising in these times of fewer vocations to the priesthood and parish clustering. We welcome Fr Paul Vincent and in the announcement from Bishop Alan Hopes we were promised two priests from the Carmelite Order with the possibility of even a third member to form a small Carmelite community at the presbytery in Ipswich. We were also reminded how a small community of Franciscans ran our parish a few decades ago. The British Social Attitudes Survey including a battery of religious questions was published recently. The headlines showed a continuous decline in the number of Britons identifying as Christian; 38 per cent this time, down from 66 per cent in 1983. ‘No religion’ is now the default setting at 52 per cent. Those who are dismayed at this decline may well take comfort from other findings from the Theos Think Tank that regularly publishes research papers to stimulate debate about the place of religion in society. A surprising statistic on its website shows the world as 80 per cent religious, predicted to rise to 90 per cent by 2050. Why are we in this country disengaging with Christianity? EVENTS AND DIARY DATES The 100 Club draw took place on Sunday 22 September at Holy Family when three lucky winners shared a £165 prize pot. The next draw takes place on Sunday 13 October. New members are always very welcome and the newsletter, that includes an application form, can be found at the rear of the church or at: www.stmarksparish.org.uk Every last Thursday of the month a Bring & Buy Coffee Morning takes place at Viv and Wyn’s home, Paddock Gate, Whitehorse Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TR from 10.30am to noon. We are raising funds for the new carpet in the Parish Room and all are very welcome to join us. The next event will be on Thursday 31 October.

CHURCH NEWS CAPEL & HOLBROOK METHODIST CHURCHES Have you every planned a trip or a holiday? You’ve got the brochures out, searched the website and seen wonderful pictures of your chosen destination. In your mind you can anticipate the beauty, the luxury, the relaxation, the fun and the activities. In the days or weeks before you make the trip these pictures are imprinted on your memory. We can easily forget what the process of getting there involves packing, travelling, queuing, security checks, baggage carousels, transfers and different languages. When we do arrive at the destination, the pictures in the brochure might have been misleading, taken with wide angle lens. The beach may not be so close. There are other developments crowding your place. Even if the place is exactly as the pictures portrayed, your mind remembers something you forgot to do before you left, or a project planned for the future that you start to worry about. Or you have a migraine developing after the travel, or are sleep deprived because of a different time zone, or you are bitten by an insect, or aches or pains make themselves noticed. If we are staying with a spouse or a friend, we are irritated by them or an old feud, or disagreement comes to the surface. The joy of anticipation is thwarted by the realisation that you have inadvertently bought yourself to this destination. When we were at home, we could blame our moods on the weather, or the politics of the day, or the pressure of work or family commitments. We assumed azure skies, palm beaches, luxury hotels would bring happiness, but we bring our emotional and psychological baggage with us. We need to be understood, loved and respected. If we have been hurt, rejected or are holding resentment we may struggle, blue skies or not. It’s always good to try to keep relationships with family and friends good, but there is something even deeper than that. Our relationship with the created order and the creator. To know that we are loved by God, to keep that relationship right. That’s a tall order, for all of us have messed up and God knows even if no one else does. In Jesus Christ there is the offer of forgiveness, because Jesus died on a cross to pay the penalty for my sin. Jesus offers us “peace with God”, he wants to restore joy in our lives, he wants us to live life to the full. God hasn’t offered a life free from trouble or suffering, but he has offered his peace in our hearts in the midst of trouble. He has offered the hope of eternal life, of heaven. I have great anticipation of that ultimate destination, but I still have many destinations on the journey that keep me full of anticipation. CHURCH NEWS THE NORTH SAMFORD BENEFICE Sproughton with Burstall, Copdock with Washbrook and Belstead & Bentley with Tattingstone For parish queries please contact: The Rev Annette Shannon The Rectory, Glebe Close, Sproughton, Ipswich IP8 3BQ revannettes@aol.co.uk / 01473 807674 Benefice Administrator Hayley Purnell northsamfordbenefice@gmail.com / 07904 972116 Friends, This year my second and third grandchildren were born and the role of grandma I had longed for became even more securely mine. I have been a mum for over 28 years to three children and now have the joy of seeing two of my children raise their own children. But I still remember that becoming a parent was not easy with sleepless nights, worries and a sudden growth in responsibilities with rather dramatic thoughts such as: “It is down to me to keep my baby alive.” For most people being a parent brings such an immense sense of wonder and joy. The first night after my son was born I was unable to sleep because I was filled with such awe. I stayed awake in the silence and darkness of the hospital ward examining his perfect tiny hands and feet, listening with pleasure to his baby noises, just wanting to cuddle and stroke him. I never wanted to be separated from him. He now lives in Singapore so any apron strings have had to extend! This summer I had the pleasure and delight of running a five-week course on spiritual nurture for parents and their babies called Starting Rite. It was designed to offer welcome and support and to build positive relationships between all involved. On the course we explored Christian themes like the mystery of God, God’s unconditional love for us all, the symbols in baptism, prayer and Bible stories. We did this through engaging in activities like peeka-boo, blowing bubbles, splashing in water, baby massage and even sitting in a black out tent with electronic tea lights! It was lovely to see the babies’ responses. There were some lovely conversations with and between the mums, and some special moments. For example, one baby fell asleep when we did a communal reading of Guess How Much I Love You, only to awaken with a cry when we finished, then falling back to sleep when we read it through again. For another baby the chance of catching a glimpse of the other babies meant that she rolled for her first time. Through the course I invited parents to respond to a number of questions including: How did you choose the name for your baby? What things do you absolutely love about your baby? What do you like about being a parent? What would be the worse choice your child could make in life? What would be the best choice your child could make in life? The questions opened opportunities for deep discussions. We all have the innate capacity for spirituality from the moment we are born and we never lose that ability no matter how many years we attain. One of the greatest privileges of my role as a rector is drawing close to people at significant times in their lives and parenthood is one of them. My hope is that I am able in some small way to nudge people towards God and open opportunities for his Holy Spirit to work and play in their lives. It is why I feel so very blessed.
