EDITOR’S CORNER
October 2019
We live in interesting times, never knowing from one day to the next what’s going to happen. I’ve been fascinated by the House of Commons debates, not so much by the content of what’s being said, but by the sheer drama of it all. At times it’s calm and relatively reasoned, but when it’s not, it’s almost unbearable. Come what may, I do think it’s important to try to keep up with what’s happening, but I’d only just got my head around the ‘backstop’ when ‘proroguing’ became the lead news story. Perhaps it will be all over before the next edition is published! Meanwhile many of us have been getting children back to school or off to college. I was an emotional wreck on the morning I dropped Jack for his first day in Year 5. I don’t suppose I was the only mum who cried her way to work that day, but we quickly get back into the routine of it all and the summer holiday becomes a distant memory. In fact it’s shocking how quickly that happens! When Jack had to write about the best day of the summer, he wrote about the very last day when we had a couple of friends over to build a den and print initials on t-shirts using grated crayons. Admittedly we didn’t have a fancy holiday, but it seems he’d forgotten about all the lovely days out we had, our week in Ireland and all the clubs and camps he’d been to. Grating crayons won the day! Instructions available on request. Jack is a bit of a mad scientist and I don’t think his grandpa or his dad will object if I say it’s in his blood. The number of weird and wonderful experiments we’d done recently, from avocado ice-cream that tastes like chocolate (it didn’t!) to slime made using liquid detergent and cornflour. And my least favourite, instant icecream in a bag. Oh it might sound like a great idea, but when you end up with vanilla flavoured ice all over the sofa, the walls and the ceiling it loses its appeal, even if it’s quite nice to eat what’s left. Still, he’s a useful distraction from more serious issues so I think I’ll keep him! Perhaps I should ask him to invent a Brexit solution! If you’re looking for a distraction or an opportunity to get out and about, I think you’ll find it here, in addition to lots of essential drama-free (mostly) information about local developments. Local News The Surviving Winter Appeal Saves Lives in the Felixstowe Area
100 Screened at Free Heart Screening Day
In 2015/16, 310 vulnerable people in Suffolk died from causes attributed to cold and poor living conditions, and it is estimated that 43,330 households in Suffolk live in fuel poverty. Last year The Surviving Winter Campaign, led by the Suffolk Community Foundation with the East Anglian Daily Times, CAB and other partner charities and businesses, heated over 700 homes of older vulnerable people. This year’s campaign will be launched in November. Together we will achieve even greater success if we encourage people in Felixstowe and the surrounding area who need help to contact the Citizens Advice Bureau for help with their fuel bills or, for those who can afford it, make a donation of all or part of their Winter Fuel Payment to help another. To donate to the campaign visit www.suffolkcf.org.uk or call 01473 602602. Anyone can make a donation. Almost two years after Ben Ramsay (22) passed away due to an undiagnosed heart condition, a free heart screening day was organised by Ben’s family at Fairfield Infant School in July 2019 in order to try and prevent other families suffering the same tragedy. Through the kind generosity of people attending a charity lunch organised by the Felixstowe Freight Club and other local events, thousands of pounds was raised to support CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). As a result of these donations, Fairfield Infant School kindly agreed that the screening could be held at the school for children and adults aged between 14 and 35 using CRY staff. We’re delighted to report that 100 local people were screened at the school on the day. In the UK, children or adults do not undergo mandatory electro-cardiogram tests which can diagnose cardiac defects. CRY says at least 12 young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions every week. It costs £5,000 for a day of screening carried out by CRY doctors – with a limited team available to cover the whole country. Stephen Porter, Vice Chairman of Felixstowe Carnival, is pictured receiving a donation from Susan Penn, Barclay Bank PLC. The carnival would like to thank Susan for all her hard work and Barclays Bank PLC Matched Fundraising for supporting her chosen charity.
To donate to the Ben Ramsay Memorial Fund go to www.c-r-y.org.uk or call 01737 363222. Ben’s family are pictured with Chris Versey, Chairman of Felixstowe Freight Club, and CRY staff.

Local News Cycle Felixstowe Committee Take a Trip to Wesel To support the Felixstowe Town twinning with Wesel, Germany, with whom the town has had an association for 45 years and a formal partnership for 25 years, three committee members of Cycle Felixstowe undertook a cycle ride to arrive in time for the commemorative celebrations over the weekend of August 2-4.
The trio travelled via foot ferry to Harwich and onto the Harwich/Hook of Holland ferry, then cycled through the Netherlands and Germany to arrive in Wesel at lunchtime on Friday 2, where they were treated to outstanding hospitality over the whole weekend by the Wesel Twinning Association. Pictures of the journey can be viewed on Cycle Felixstowe's Facebook page. On Sunday, suitably rested, they ventured out with a member of the local fire service on an exploratory cycle ride through some wonderful countryside and villages along the Rhine, topping off with a climb to the top of one of Wesel's industrial monuments, the 42 meter high water tower. The return leg was much easier, returning home on Monday with the Felixstowe Twinning Association. Cycle Felixstowe can't promise to do this every year, but do hold regular rides on the second Sunday and fourth Saturday of the month throughout the year. The aim of the group is to encourage more residents to get out to enjoy the local countryside by bicycle, whatever their ability or cycle. Starting from the town centre Triangle, the group chooses quieter routes and cycle lanes where possible.
The group, two septuagenarians and another just two years younger, were seen off from Felixstowe Town Hall by Mayor Nick Barber after the presentation of a cheque for £280 for his nominated charities; Facts Community Bus Service and the 2020 Carnival. The money had been raised by the group during their 24-hour Static Cycle Challenge held over the May Bank Holiday weekend on the Pier Plaza.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service.
Cloudy2Clear GUARANTEE All Customers That An Average Quote Will Take No Longer Than 20 MINS!!!
Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously
helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ipswich, Felixstowe & Stowmarket areas and manager Andy Kerridge agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing
a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Local News Remember, Remember the Third of November
Cheque Presentation to Somersham Ward Support Group
It’s one of the biggest nights in Felixstowe's events calendar and this year the 12th annual Felixstowe Firework Spectacular is back with a bang, bigger than ever before with a Greatest Show finale!
The Rose for Elaine charity ball scheduled to take place at the Orwell Hotel on August 17 was replaced by a celebration meal for 46 people. At the end of an excellent night, a cheque for £7,400 was presented to Somersham Ward Support Group, a registered charity supported entirely by volunteers.
A record 5,000 people attended last year’s display and in 2019 the organisers are promising even more fun for the whole family. The professional 20-minute display at the football ground in Dellwood Avenue takes place on Sunday 3 November and will be fired to music once again. Gates open at 4.30pm and the display starts at 6.30pm. As well as the display, the event will feature a fun fair, sideshows, the FireFlow fire entertainers, Night Flight aerial drone display team and a food village featuring a wide selection of fab food from pulled pork to noodles, and donuts to fish finger sarnies! Over the years, thousands of pounds has been raised for local charities and this year the event, organised by Felixstowe & Walton United FC, will benefit the community sports hub project at Dellwood Avenue, as well as providing the town with a major public firework display of its own to be proud of. Big savings can be made by buying tickets before the day, with prices held for the sixth successive year. They are available from October 4 at a discounted advance rate from outlets in the town (Coes, Underwoods Hardware, David Button Independent Funeral Directors of Walton, Spa Pavilion Theatre Box Office or the Football Club) as well as online at: www.felixstowefootball.co.uk
The event was organised by Ian Brown who is pictured (second from right) with (left to right) Luke Groves, Vice Chair of Somersham Ward Support Group, Ian’s son Andrew, Sue Chainey, Treasurer of Somersham Ward Support Group), Ian’s daughter Clair Pack and Jenny Haynes, Chair of Somersham Ward Support Group.

Local News Sea Sunday at the Salvation Army The sea, fish and fishermen are an important part of our everyday lives, whether we appreciate them or not. The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen – better known today as the Fisherman’s Mission – at the invitation of The Salvation Army, Cobbold Road, Felixstowe, will be presenting Sea Sunday on October 13. The Fisherman’s Mission is a Christian charity that specialises in caring for fishermen. It also supports the families of fishermen, especially those who have lost loved ones at sea, and cares for the needs of retired fishermen. At 10.30am, Morning Worship will be conducted by Senior Superintendent Tim Jenkins (Lowestoft), who oversees the work of the Fisherman's Mission here at Felixstowe, and Andy Malcolm, its regional organiser. At 3.30pm there will be a Harvest of the Sea Thanksgiving Celebration led by and featuring members of the Fisherman’s Mission. At both services they will be supported by the Felixstowe Salvation Army Band and Songsters. Everyone is welcome to attend both the morning worship and the afternoon’s unique thanksgiving celebration to recognise our appreciation of the sea and of fish, along with fishermen and fishing industry serving our nation.

Local News Armbands to Ironman Shaun Good of Rotary Club of Felixstowe completes 'Ironman' in Copenhagen Some 50 years ago, when I was just five years old, I had a drowning accident while staying at a caravan holiday park with my family. The accident happened when I fell head first into one of the 45 gallon drums of water which were placed around the caravan park as part of fire prevention measures. My brother ran to get help, but in his panic forgot which of the drums I had fallen into. When I was eventually found and pulled from the water, I had stopped breathing. Luckily for me one of the people who helped rescue me was a retired doctor who gave me the kiss of life and saved me. The accident left me with a lifelong fear of water and a feeling of claustrophobia whenever my head was submerged, and so I never had the confidence to try and learn to swim. That was until August 2018 when, inspired by some fellow Felixstowe Road Runner athletes who were training to take part in Ironman Barcelona Triathlon, I decided that I wanted to learn to swim in order to complete a triathlon myself. I got in touch with Seamus Bennett at Swimsmooth Suffolk and even though swimming front crawl was impossible for me then, he spent some time with me developing the basics of a breast stroke in order that I could compete in the Peninsula Sprint Triathlon at RHS Ipswich in October 2018. The swim leg was 500 metres and it took me nearly 17 minutes to complete. It felt like the longest 17 minutes of my life and I was pretty exhausted when I got out of the pool, but the 20 mile bike ride and the 5k run went well and I was hooked on the idea of competing in more triathlon events. To do so I knew that I would need to develop a front crawl swim stroke as it’s definitely considered the most efficient for longer distance events, but I was worried that given the enormity of the challenge for me I would lose the motivation to learn and my triathlon journey would end nearly as soon as it had started. The only thing I could think of doing to truly motivate myself was to enter a long distance Ironman event, so I began researching which would be the best event for a first timer and a very weak swimmer. Ironman Copenhagen in August 2019 came out on top so as soon as registration opened I duly paid my £600 and signed up. At the same time I also entered the Blenheim Palace Sprint Triathlon, the Leeds Olympic distance (both in June 2019) and the Outlaw Half distance at Holkham in July 19 as part of my journey. So that was it, in at that deep end and no going back now!
I went back to Seamus and told him of my plan, and there started my journey to Ironman. The amount of training required is quite some undertaking and definitely not something that should be underestimated. I typically trained for 9-13 hours per week, consisting of two to three hours of swimming, four to six hours of biking and three to four of running and added strength and conditioning to that including a one-hour weekly pilates class, both elements of which are very important in developing and keeping your core strength in order to maintain that level of training without injury. I also have regular deep tissue massage to help prevent long term injury. Despite the volume of training I found that once I had established a routine I loved the multi-discipline approach and the amount of variety it brings to training. My swim progress remained slow though and I found that I could only swim any sort of distance in the pool with the aid of a pull-buoy buoyancy aid. My confidence did start to grow a little as I took up more open water swimming where I found the natural buoyancy you get in salt water and using a wetsuit helped me develop my swim distance further. I persevered and completed each of the 'shorter' distance triathlon events in reasonable times for a beginner.
Fast forward to Sunday 18 August and I crossed the Ironman finish line in 13 hrs 52 mins. The swim of 2.4 miles took me two hours and was the hardest thing I've ever done, but I did it and crossing that finish line will remain with me as one of my proudest achievements. My swimming is still weak to say the least, but I plan to continue working hard to improve in order to complete some more 'Half Ironman' events in 2020 and a second long distance Ironman event in 2021. So my takeaway piece of advice would be, no matter what your circumstances or ability, if you dare to dream big and are willing to work hard then anything is possible. My sincere thanks go to Seamus Bennett (Swimsmooth Suffolk), Kim Debenham (Muscle Worx Massage) Helen Duggan (Core & More Pilates) and special friends Dan and Lizz Clark for believing in me and for all your help and support along this journey. Shaun Good

The Inner Wheel Club of Felixstowe Thursday 5 September was our first meeting of the year after the summer, though, as you saw in the last Spotlight, we did still meet with social events. Our president for this year is Jan Garfield who presented her new programme.
Life | Land | Business
The main charities for the year are Guide Dogs for the Blind, and Fresh Start New Beginnings. The district charity is Teenage Cancer Trust, and the association president’s is Riding for the Disabled. The talk on our first night was by Ivan Osbourne on sign language. He explained how long it took to be an interpreter and the different things they were called in to help with. Sign language is a language on its own and varies in different countries. We are now looking forward to a busy but productive year.

Legal Eyes What Does it Mean to be an Executor? The importance of acting as an Executor is not fully understood by many and it is possible that you may be named as an Executor of someone’s Will without your knowledge. Acting as an Executor carries many duties and responsibilities when dealing with a person’s estate. One of the first things that needs to be ascertained is whether or not the estate is liable to Inheritance Tax (‘IHT’). This is determined by many factors and some people will be able to claim higher tax free allowances due to their personal circumstances.
The final duty is to ensure the estate is distributed in accordance with the deceased’s Will, first of all paying legacies and then distributing the residuary estate. When accounting to beneficiaries, an Executor is advised to protect his position by carrying out certain searches to ensure that the beneficiaries are not bankrupt. The cost is minimal and avoids a potential claim against the Executor by a Trustee in Bankruptcy.
The duties of an Executor can therefore be onerous and a role which many may prefer not to take on.
Another duty is to settle all outstanding liabilities of the estate. This in itself can be a difficult process, particularly if you did not know the deceased person particularly well. Jackamans advises that special Notices are placed in the newspapers to alert creditors to the estate. These Notices offer protection to Executors.
If you feel you would like guidance in your capacity as Executor please contact Carol Lockett at carol.lockett@jackamans.co.uk or call 01394 279636.
Claims can also be made by beneficiaries who feel they have been left an insufficient legacy in regard to the size of the estate, or a person who has been left out of a Will completely. Again, some protection can be given to an Executor if they obtain probate and await the required time limit before they distribute. If an Executor does not place notices or does not wait the required time limit after probate is granted before distributing the estate, he or she may be personally liable in the event that a successful claim is made.
We will be happy to discuss Executors’ duties and to provide assistance in dealing with an estate.
This article provides only a general summary and is not intended to be comprehensive. Special legal advice should be taken in any individual situation.

Tee Times A Great Achievement for the Club and for the Town We don’t very often blow our own trumpet here at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club, but we had a great win for one of our teams in September and wanted to let you know what a great result it was! Our Stenson team is made up of eight guys who play off low handicaps and enter the competition along with other clubs from around Suffolk. They play several knock-out rounds and we battled our way to the final against Aldeburgh GC. The final is played at a neutral course which this year was Bury St Edmunds. Four teams of foursomes are played in the morning, which we led by 3-1 at lunchtime. This included an amazing eagle on a par four hole which one of our players drove onto the green and his partner putted in a 15 footer! In the afternoon it’s singles! There was some fantastic golf from some very talented young players and Felixstowe Ferry won the match 9-3. A great achievement as it is the most prestigious competition for men in the county. It was great to have so many talented players at the club. A great achievement for the club and for the town. Submitted by David Spencer, General Manager

Local Feature We’re all Going on a Summer Holiday (Part 9) Graham took to his job as a chauffeur immediately and got on very well with his boss, Mr John Wallace of Fred. Olsen Limited London. When not driving, Mr Wallace gave Graham the opportunity to learn something about the shipping business, which just added to the itchy feet that Graham had to get back on the road again. Carol went back to Woolies and within days it was as if she hadn’t left! However, both Carol and Graham longed for the freedom to travel again and fortunately for Graham, in Mr Wallace he had a very understanding boss and it was agreed that Fred Olsen would give Graham a sabbatical and so the plans began… First of all, Carol and Graham decided that Ian had to stay in England to be educated, but they felt they needed to embark on their next adventure with like-minded people who would ‘share the pain’. The original plan was to drive overland to India and perhaps even beyond, and they duly advertised their idea in The Standard and received interest from Sue, who was working in an office in the city, Peter, who was a horticulturist, Stephen, a government service worker, and Roderic, a geologist. Together they put a plan together and purchased a long-wheel based Land Rover. It was decided to conquer Africa rather than India and on 23 September 1978, the old and well laden Land Rover headed out of London on the A2 towards Dover: destination Nairobi, Kenya. After a leisurely trip through Europe they arrived in Spain, well actually in Africa, but actually in Spain. Ceuta, along with another city around the coast to the east called Melilla, are Spanish autonomous areas, sharing a border with Morocco and as Gibraltar is claimed by Spain then Ceuta and Melilla are claimed by Morocco.
Instead of having issues with customs, the six travellers and their Land Rover passed across the border into Morocco with ease and were surprised to find that all that was there were two concrete huts and a barrier across the road. Once across the border and into Morocco they turned right and followed the well-maintained concrete road towards the Atlantic coast and then, hugging the coast, passing through pine forests, headed onwards to Rabat, stopping for refreshment at villages on the way that comprising of mud brick houses, all with TV aerials. Yoga can help ease stress and promote relaxation. When used alone or along with other methods of alleviating stress, such as meditation, yoga can be a powerful way to keep stress in check.
Enables mindfulness
Practicing yoga can help you shift your awareness to the sensations, thoughts and emotions that accompany a given pose. That awareness can bring the mind back to the present moment, the main aim of mindfulness, where it can stay happy and focused.
Helps with depression
Yoga may have an anti-depressant effect and could help decrease symptoms of depression. This may be because yoga can help decrease levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that influences levels of serotonin, the neurotransmitter often associated with depression.
Can aid better sleep
Yoga can help increase the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep and wakefulness. It can also have a significant effect on anxiety, depression, chronic pain and stress - all common contributors to sleep problems.
Helps improve breathing
Pranayama, or yogic breathing, is a practice in yoga that focuses on controlling the breath through breathing exercises and techniques.
Improves flexibility and balance
Practicing just 15–30 minutes of yoga each day could make a big difference for those looking to enhance their flexibility and balance.
Can increase strength
In addition to improving flexibility, yoga is a great addition to an exercise routine for its strength-building benefits. In fact, there are specific poses in yoga that are designed to increase strength and build muscle.

Home & Garden Biodiversity is the Key! Over the last few months, Felixstowe’s Community Nature Reserve has welcomed more new members than ever before. In fact, if you add together all the new spaces which local people have created as part of our Community Nature Reserve, it amounts to an entire football pitch!
When they start to emerge, thin them out so the plants are no less than 12 inches (30 cm) apart. Bumblebees love foxgloves, and so do many other insects. And with insects, there will be birds to feed on them! Look for the name Digitalis.
With so many new members, we’ve received lots of enthusiastic questions about the best ways to develop a wildlife-friendly garden, allotment or set of window boxes. We therefore offer the following plant list as a way of improving the biodiversity in your little green spaces:
Thyme
Rowan
The red autumn berries of this beautiful tree are much loved by all members of the thrush family. Our recommendation is the European Rowan Sorbus aucuparia.
These seeds are so tiny! There can be up to 170,000 Thyme seeds in only one ounce. For best results, plant the seeds into trays, and only plant the seedlings into your garden / allotment in early spring between 4 – 6 inches (10 – 15 cm) apart. Beetles and invertebrates love Thyme. Bees love their nectar!
Barberry
It’s a deciduous shrub whose autumn berries will be greatly appreciated by many species of small bird. When its flowers are in bloom, the nectar will also be appreciated by butterflies and moths.
Firethorn
Birds love the berries, and insects adore its nectar. It’s an evergreen, so you can leave it to grow year after year. In its mature stages, Firethorn forms a dense hedge which is ideal as a home-security alternative to fences or walls.
Foxgloves
Plant the seeds in late summer right after the seed pods mature. However, you can also plant them in autumn or spring and still achieve good results.

Letter to the Editor Dear Sharon,
The Roger David Burrows Music Fund RSPB 70 Years at Havergate Island by Steve Everett
Rarely am I moved to write a comment to any media article, but I feel I want to correct a ‘half truth’ which may be perpetuated in the article by Dr Adrian Cooper on p.29 of Spotlight in Felixstowe Issue 181 (September 2019). There is mention of a question from the Citizen Science Group as to why stinging nettles are so successful. Dr Cooper’s reply was partly correct, but does not give the full story. Stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) are indeed most commonly found in a range of man-influenced habitats. Those preferred are shady places in gardens often close to compost heaps and walls, at the margin of damp woodlands and fens and, most notably, in cattle-grazed pastures where persistent patches mark out decomposing cow-pats. The soils in all its habitats are not only phosphaterich, as he mentions, but most importantly also high in nitrogen. It is this combination of high N and P which defines the success of nettles. Another key feature is that the plant conserves these reserves by withdrawing them into its creeping stems over the winter months, providing a flush of growth in the spring. Nettle is therefore a very efficient nutrient recycler. With kind regards, Alan Baker (a resident of Felixstowe)
