ST MARY’S CHURCH NETTLESTEAD In August a bell themed flower festival took place at the church to raise funds for urgently needed roof repairs. We were blessed with beautiful weather and an exceptionally good turnout. The arrangements covered a wide range of bell themes, from nursery rhymes to the American War of Independence and wedding bells. The festival was very successful and raised £970. The PCC would like to thank all the flower arrangers who produced some beautiful displays, the team who provided a wonderful range of refreshments over the two day festival and the various musicians who travelled a long way to perform free of charge. Another fundraising event, Carts and Craters, was held in September. The weather was not nearly so good, with heavy rain for most of the day, but more than 180 people still attended to see, amongst other things, the Suffolk Punches, the local history displays, the Second World War bomb crater, the displays of farm machinery and to enjoy some traditional games. An amazing total of £988 was raised. Once again, the PCC would like to thank all the people who helped with the arrangements and attractions. The PCC is also very grateful to all the visitors to both events who have contributed so generously to the fundraising efforts to preserve out ancient church of St Mary’s for future generations.

COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLOR’S REPORT JOHN FIELD’S REPORT TO GIPPING VALLEY: September 2018 Highway flooding The flooding issue at the A14 bridge on Station Road has been fixed at last! Years of emails have paid off. Scrutiny in September The county performance report indicated that the review of highways currently underway will include ‘How utility companies co-ordinate roadworks and are held to account for their actions’. A subject dear to our hearts! It said: “this will now have to be taken forward with the Secretary of State for Transport expectation that a permit scheme is in place in Suffolk by March 2019”. At Scrutiny we decided permits should improve control significantly, so this is good news! Scrutiny of Absence Suffolk County Council has a high level of absence due to physical and mental health issues, far higher than other comparable authorities, particularly in the Fire and Rescue Service. I was concerned the issues could be due to the turmoil and stress caused by the many re-organisations that have occurred, the job losses driven by reducing budgets or just a lax management attitude. In the Fire and Rescue Service in 2017-18, 9,260 days were lost in total, 85 per cent to long term sickness. Nottinghamshire loses 2.6 per cent days to sickness, Suffolk 9.73 per cent and Warwickshire 14.55 per cent. Why the difference? In Highways the absence rate was much lower at 4.52 per cent. This is in an area which has suffered much re-organisation and therefore a lot of employment related stress, but absence is lower than average. Across the county the average is 5.38 per cent days lost, a total of 55,014 days. With staff costs at around £144m the cost of lost time must be around £7.75m. A more rigorous regime is being introduced to ensure that all sickness is genuine. It will also ensure that issues are picked up early. Staff will be supported when they have either physical or mental health problems and any underlying causes are addressed. More specialist education placements The projection is that there will be an 18 per cent rise in the number of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) between 2018 and 2020, compared to only a four per cent rise in the overall number of children. These will mostly be moderate learning difficulties, ASD and speech and language needs.

Suffolk cannot meet current or future demand. Many children have a long wait for specialist education or are placed far from home in expensive out-of-county placements. Suffolk will need to develop a further 300-400 places using new specialist support centres attached to mainstream schools, with some new special schools. New Care at Home model Three years ago, the county got the design of its Support to Live at Home contract very wrong. The problems mean it provides only 29 per cent of home care. It is developing a new model of home care and a new contract. This appears better, but I have doubts that the new rates offered will attract providers and people into the system. They look attractive but don’t address travelling time separately. It can be a large percentage of the task. There will be three main elements: • Responsive: Will help when people urgently need a response. For example, a frail older person living at home has called the GP or an ambulance but is not very coherent and it is difficult to determine a diagnosis. Care may involve medication, ensuring fluids and food are taken and assessment of on-going condition. Later it will offer rehabilitation or reablement to maximise independence. • Bespoke: For people with long term conditions, brain injury, recovering from a stroke, or a condition such as Parkinson’s and may require livein-care to be able to remain in their own home. • Locality: The main service for planned long term care. It will allow local community-based solutions to be developed. The county will work with the 85 care providers in Suffolk. It will not seek to move people between providers or reduce the budget. District Council Issues MSDC lost an appeal to a developer who claimed that they had not applied the new version of the Government’s Planning Framework properly and had miscalculated the number of approved deliverable sites. The inspector agreed so it appears our five-year land supply was short lived. Development is again less constrained. If you have any queries, please phone me on 01473 831306 (you will need to say your name and press #) or 07545 423808 or email me at: john.field@suffolk.gov.uk I do have Twitter (@JohnFieldjd) and Facebook (fieldjd) accounts and my website is at: www.johnfield.suffolk.libdems.org

SnOasis PARISH ALLIANCE (SPA) In the autumn of 2016, Onslow Suffolk Ltd put in an application to Mid Suffolk District Council for SnOasis Reserved Matters to be considered – Planning Application no. 4494/16. For details visit: www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/planning-and-building/planning Our questions and comments about Reserved Matters were summarised in a document which was submitted to MSDC in the summer as the comments from the SPA and all its member parishes, giving the comments extra weight because they come from a significant number of local communities, representing over 11,000 registered voters. The SPA member parishes are Baylham, Barham, Bramford, Claydon and Whitton, Great Blakenham, Little Blakenham, Needham Market, Nettlestead and Somersham.

4

As you know, I have endeavoured to give you regular monthly updates on the progress (or lack of it) with SnOasis Reserved Matters. However, as there is still no date for the outstanding work on Reserved Matters to be completed and for it to be considered by MSDC, the SPA have decided that we will no longer do a monthly article. Once any progress is made, we shall restart the articles and keep you updated. In the meantime, for further information, please email the SPA clerk, Janet Gobey: snoasispa@icloud.com SnOasis Parish Alliance Chairman Steve Plume www.greatblakenham.suffolk.cloud/snoasis-update-information/snoasis-parish-alliance

The Playing Field, Princes Gardens, Somersham / 01473 833416 OPENING TIMES Monday to Friday: 8am-6pm Saturdays: 9am-1pm Work goes on apace at the community shop. Products change with the seasons and now we are looking forward to having winter warmers. Come and see what you can get to put in the store-cupboard in case bad weather catches up with us. As always, we aim to source produce locally, and to this end we have the freshest local eggs, vegetables, bread, cakes, pies, locally brewed beer, and we are always looking to try other local products. Not only are locally produced foods delicious, but they save on travel miles thereby reducing the carbon footprint and support our local producers. We also promote reuse and recycling in the shop and are always happy to receive reusable carrier bags and egg boxes. Our community shop is not only a place to purchase everyday goods that we need at home, although, of course, this is the main aim, but it is also a meeting place and a centre for our local community. Lucy recently organised a very successful Macmillan Coffee morning which was held in the shop. This was a well-supported event and Lucy says thanks to everyone who attended and helped. An amazing £315.77 was raised for this worthwhile organization. We have our regular Tea and Chat meetings during the winter on the last Wednesday afternoon in the month between 2 and 4pm in Coffee Corner, so come along for tea and cakes, and a chat during the colder months of the year. Make a date for our next meeting on Wednesday, November 28; you will be very welcome. There is also the Golden Link every other Tuesday afternoon and Petrolheads on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month, so lots going on for a chance to meet up with other people. We want everyone to benefit from the shop, so if you would like help with your shopping please get in touch with a member of our management team (listed below) and don’t forget that the dry cleaners pick up on Tuesday afternoons and return the following Tuesday. For a book to read in the winter evenings, the book exchange is an excellent way to find a new read, and the village diary is waiting to be filled with events over the coming weeks – take a look and see what is happening locally. Our village shop is a great hub for our local community and life would be poorer without it. Customers are central to its continuing success; no customers equal no shop, so we very much value our customers and welcome any input of suggestions you may have for ways to improve on what is already there. If you are really keen to be involved we always need volunteers to help and the management committee would be happy to have new members as well. New people equal new ideas. So there are lots of ways to be involved and to ensure our shop continues to be an excellent centre for our village life well into the future. Management Team Lucy Barrett – 831890; Sue Browne – 831321; Terry Fordham – 831529; Peter Jousiffe; Natasha Leach; Anne MacFadyen – 831288; Steve Woolhouse – 831080

ORCHARD BARN

As I write this at the beginning of October ready for this November edition, I am wondering where the year has gone! Our workshops for October were leisurely afternoons making Christmas cards as they will be needed all too soon.

Anna wrote:

Our remaining programme for 2018 November 5: Christmas Card Making December 3: AGM and Christmas Party If you think this all sounds interesting there is currently room for new members so please get in touch if you would like to join us. Although the club is all ladies at present, gentlemen who would like to learn crafts are welcome. Unfortunately I can’t accommodate children. Jackie Durrant: 01449 672690

In a previous edition we gave the first half of an article describing Anna’s first experience of coming to Orchard Barn. We can now give you the second half of the article and can tell you that Anna is now a regular volunteer at Orchard Barn where she helps out in the garden and orchard on Tuesdays. She also recently led an apple-pressing afternoon where our own apples were made into delicious juice. “In addition to the barn on its one acre plot there are workshop areas, paths, bridges and a garden. In these spaces people come to share and learn about making and growing things – large and small – by hand. They learn by doing, by talking, demonstrating and swapping experiences. There are no services on the plot – electricity, mains drainage, gas cylinders – and that is strangely refreshing because we are so used to feeling dependent upon these services that to feel we can actually survive without them is strangely and wonderfully liberating. “My day was a joy of meeting people who liked solving practical problems and in working with others could, with basic tools in their hands, make things – even houses. These skills have a value in their own right. They are the skills that our forebears and some, like thatchers, hurdle and basket makers, maintain. They ground us and connect us to the earth on which we live. They make us feel more confident. Of course, we’re not going to give up mains drainage or electric lights, but neither do we have to lose our connections with the natural world in which we live. Orchard Barn feels like a portal to that balance.” To find out more please visit: www.orchardbarn.org.uk

OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS BRAMFORD COMPUTER CLUB The club will meet every Wednesday in November from 10am-noon in the upstairs room at the rear of the Methodist Church in The Street. Membership for the year is £1 plus £3 for each two-hour session. Broadband and refreshments are available. We have no set programme, but are here to help you to get the most out of your computer. Why not give us a try?

THE NEEDHAM MARKET SOCIETY Our AGM at the end of September was well supported with a splendid turnout of members and several new-comers. Andrea Davies conducted the meeting as chair and all members of the committee were re-elected. Thanks were expressed to David Hill, the retired treasurer, for his valuable work over the years. Gordon Crosby drew members’ attention to the recent town plan proposals, emphasising the importance of residents’ views, and the opportunity afforded to express those views at the two open meetings in early October. Plans of the proposals were on display, and attracted much interest. On to the talk – an intriguing insight into the successful recent reconstruction of the roof of St John’s Parish Church by none-other than the architect Stephen Claydon who has been involved from start to finish. David Long’s wonderfully clear pictures showing almost every detail of the structural problems accompanied Stephen’s talk as he expertly explained in detail the work as it progressed. New leaflets about the church were available from Ray Levett who has steered the church throughout this difficult period, and the town now has a church ready for the 21st century. Our next meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 21 when Mark Mitchels’ talk on the Cretingham Murder will keep us all on the edge of our seats! Our meetings are held at 7.30pm in the Burton Room at Needham Market Community Centre. Visitors are always welcome (£3 entrance fee). Membership for the NMS year ending in September 2019 is £7.50. New members are always welcome. For further details please contact Andrea Davies: 01449 721056

SCHOOLS HENLEY PRE-SCHOOL As a committee run pre-school we held our annual general meeting in October. We have a strong committed team who continue to keep the pre-school functioning to a high standard. So far this term we have been exploring autumn through nature walks and collecting natural materials for our craft activities. We have made bread in the shape of hedgehogs and the children worked hard kneading and shaping their dough. Halloween was fun with pumpkin carving and spider biscuits and this month we look forward to Diwali and Bonfire Night. Christmas will be celebrated with a trip to the New Wolsey Theatre to see The Ballard of Rudy. We are a small, rural and friendly setting based at Henley Community Centre. We pride ourselves on high levels of staff to children ratios and therefore providing the maximum care and learning for the children. All staff are highly trained and continue with regular training to build their knowledge further. We provide an extensive range of resources and activities to suit all ages and abilities, ensuring all levels of development and play within the EYFS are explored. Parents play the most important role in children’s lives so we work closely together to ensure we work in partnership. We also hold stay and play sessions each term that are very well supported by parents/carers. Session places are currently available. We accept eligible 30-hour funded children plus two and three-year-old funded. We are open term time only. For further information please call 01473 833848 during session time (9am-3pm) or email Bridget Wyatt, our manager, at: enquiries henleypreschool.com

CLAYDON PRIMARY SCHOOL Starting school Are you the parent/carer of a child born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015? If so, the deadline for applying for a place in school is 15 January 2019 and applications can be made via Suffolk County Council’s website. Every year some parents are disappointed when they miss the deadline, so please apply on time! If you would like to visit our school we are hosting visits at 9.15am on Thursday, November 8 and Thursday, December 6. Please book in at the school office: 01473 830439 Claydon Primary Nursery Are you the parent/carer of a child born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016? If so, you may wish to consider applying for places in our nursery for September 2019. For many years, Claydon Primary School has had its own nursery class, but from September 2019 we are embarking on an exciting new venture! Our nursery is going to expand its provision and open for full days. Hopefully, this will enable us to fulfil a local need for nursery provision as we will be able to take more children for their 15-hour provision and also offer families the opportunity to take advantage of the 30-hour funding with children being able to attend for full days. Application forms are available from the school and the closing date is 1 May 2019. Watch out for more information about the opportunity to visit our nursery later in the school year.

CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL On Wednesday, September 26 we welcomed over 500 prospective parents/ carers and their children to our school for our annual open evening. Following a short presentation, visitors were able to tour the school and experience our fantastic resources and facilities. Staff and students were on-hand to showcase their work and visitors took part in various activities including exploding Jelly Babies in Science, French and Spanish food tasting in Languages, a rowing challenge in PE and much, much more. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our 200 plus Claydon High School student helpers who helped to make the evening such a success. Much of the feedback I received from visitors commented upon how helpful, friendly and polite our students were. In other areas of the school, the PE department has had an eventful start to the term with football, netball and table tennis fixtures and a cross country competition. Year 10 GCSE PE students also had the opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills when they ran a successful Year 6 sports morning for over 150 students from our feeder primary schools. A range of activities were on offer, including table tennis, football, netball and fitness and rowing challenges. Our Year 10 leaders made the sessions really fun and competitive and were a credit to the school. Year 11 students have been particularly busy with various activities including a Business Studies trip to Colchester Zoo, where students learnt more about the zoo as a business, focussing on how staff are organised and understanding their job roles. Languages students travelled to London to visit Westminster University to find out about studying languages at degree level as well as visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum where students had the chance to enjoy a range of collections including the much acclaimed Frida Kahlo exhibition. Design and Technology students visited the Design Museum in London which included a hands-on workshop with their on-site designers. While the primary school awaits their carpark we remain busy at the end of the day with parents/carers collecting from both schools. I would like to assure the local community that we request drivers not to arrive too early and to be mindful of local residents. For health and safety reasons we cannot open our gates earlier as students are crossing the playground which is used for parking. Finally, as I write this article, WOW Week is nearly upon us and I look forward to sharing all of the wonderful activities our students will have experienced in December’s edition. Please watch this space! If you would like to visit the school and see us in action, then please come along to one of our open mornings. The next one is on Wednesday, November 14. Please telephone my PA, Ms J Saunders, on 01473 836110 to book a place. Headteacher Maéve Taylor

IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME! On Sunday, October 29 at 2am the clocks will be going backward one hour from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). In 1784, American politician and inventor Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea while in Paris. In order to save on candles he suggested that people got up earlier when it was lighter. It wasn’t until 1916 that the idea was adopted in the UK. The idea came from William Willett, a builder, in 1907 when he published a leaflet called The Waste of Daylight. Being a keen golfer he would get cross at not being able to finish his games because the sun went down and there wasn’t enough light to carry on playing. Source: https:/www.bbc.co.uk/newsround Remembering to turn your clock back seems to start the season of remembrance, with Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day and the birth of Jesus. These events happened in history and we cannot turn back time to change them. As we stop to remember our past, even just this year, there may be things we wish we had not said or done that we wish we could turn back time and do things differently. The story is told of a headteacher who kept a book recording the student’s behaviour, good or bad. On one particular occasion as he came out with this book, the faces of the students went pale, clearly knowing what was in there concerning each of them. The headteacher then proceeded to throw the book into a fire giving everyone a clean start for the new term. The Bible tells us that everything we have done is recorded and will be revealed at the end of time. The good news is that Jesus came to save us from our sins and give us a new start. Through His death and resurrection the way is now open to turn back to God, receive forgiveness for sins and live His way. No doubt we will have different opinions on whether we should change our clocks like this. The advantage, I suspect, won’t be for saving candles, but potentially for finishing a golf match. So for now don’t forget if it’s not already too late to turn your clock back, but more importantly to consider what God has done for you in Jesus while we have daylight. WEEKLY EVENTS Monday fortnightly: Little Owls Toddler Group, 10am-noon Tuesday: Weekly Prayer Meeting, 7.30-8.30pm Wednesday: Coffee Morning, 10am-noon / all welcome Thursday: Home Group, 10-11.45am Friday: Children’s Club (primary school age), 6.30-7.30pm Sunday Morning Service: 10.45am-noon For more information contact Michael: 01473 839785

Not only are we preparing for Remembrance Sunday, but we are starting to look towards Christmas. We also have a slightly changed service schedule so if you normally attend Baylham or Bramford please take note! Firstly Remembrance. The loss of the Royal British Legion Branch in Bramford has been really felt in the village. We have finally laid up the standards and hopefully they will be on display for our service on November 11. I have had a lot of folk asking me whether our Remembrance Service is still going ahead. Of course it is; this is a chance for the whole village to gather to remember those who sacrificed themselves in various conflicts to give us the freedom to live as we wish. So usual time, usual place, this year with a new, much more

efficient modern sound system. Thank you to all of you who donated; I hope you will be able to appreciate the difference! Keep your eye open for our Christmas services. I know it seems a little early to mention them, but I am already getting quite excited. It will be my first Christmas as a grandmother and I am already planning our family celebrations. This brings me to the changed service schedule. Because of staffing issues and my odd inability to be in more than one place at a time, we have had to reschedule the services on the third Sunday of each month. Bramford will now have their main service at 9am and Baylham at 11am. Other Sundays have not been changed. I look forward to seeing you all bright eyed and bushy tailed on November 18 at the new times! Blessings to you all, The Rev Jenny Seggar PARISH REGISTERS Weddings September 1: Robert Barker and Chloe Foulger, Bramford September 15: Matthew Shaddick and Kezia Low, Bramford May they grow in their love for each other.
