A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Mother Nature is having quite an impact on my life right now, mostly positive, but not entirely! I’m looking after grandma’s chickens for a few days while she’s away. It’s not difficult: put them in, let them out, give them some grain… job done. Except not this time! Last night one of them went missing and I found myself clucking around the garden for about an hour in torrential rain trying to find her. I can only imagine how ridiculous I looked but I most certainly wasn’t laughing. Of course I didn’t find her so spent a restless night wondering how to tell grandma that Blossom was done for. When I went to let the others out this morning, there she was waiting for me in all her glory, perfectly dry, well-rested and seemingly happy. A bit too happy for my liking! Meanwhile, back at home a mummy blackbird (I’ve called her Marilyn because she’s very beautiful) has taken up residence under the roof of our little outdoor lean-to, a place I like to sit with a book when the weather allows. She’s busily feeding four babies, constantly flying back and forth all day long. I must say I admire/envy her energy and it is a rather beautiful thing to see, but she’s making my garden a no-go area as every time I open the door she abandons her chicks and sits on the wall until I leave. I imagine she’s sitting there muttering “here she comes again… what is it this time… can’t she see I’m busy… what is she wearing?”. I end up feeling guilty for invading ‘her’ space so I retreat indoors and leave her to it. I haven’t even put the bins out this week because I’m afraid to scare her away. How would I cope with four baby blackbirds? Not very well I suspect. I don’t suppose she and her babies will be there for very long and despite the inconvenience (and the mess, but let’s not go there right now) I’m glad we have given them a safe place to hatch. I do love living in the countryside. Even those of us who live in Suffolk towns and villages are never far from a wide open space and a big sky view. We really are incredibly lucky and when better weather lands, as surely it must, I hope you have the opportunity and the means to get about to explore or simply admire our surroundings. You may not have to go very far, unless your garden is out of bounds too!

GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME IN HADLEIGH A small group is currently attempting to establish whether there is a need, and whether there are volunteers to support a Good Neighbour Scheme in Hadleigh. The responses from questionnaires which were distributed have established that many local residents would benefit from such a scheme. Some would like help with shopping, minor household repairs or a one-off garden tidy, form-filling, lifts and friendship/company. And, just as important, there are a good number of potential Good Neighbour volunteers if we can get the scheme up and running! Sally Connick, the GNS Development Officer at Community Action Suffolk, has been advising the group, who now number six, all of whom will be on the committee, with one offering to be the secretary. However, essential before the scheme can go forward is the appointment of a chairman and treasurer. When these officers are in place, we can set about finding the start-up funding of about £600 for insurance, DBS checks, a mobile phone and training. We are hopeful that local funding can be found, but we cannot proceed until we have the other two officers in place. If there are any readers who share our hope to get the GNS set up in Hadleigh, and are willing to serve as officers on the committee, please do contact us at: Hadleighgns@gmail.com
HADLEIGH DAA NAMED CHAIRMAN’S CHARITY FOR THE YEAR Babergh’s newly elected chairman has named Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance as her charity for 2019-20. Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) is a local charity affiliated with the national Dementia Action Alliance which works to transform health and social care outcomes for people affected by dementia. Founded in 2014, Hadleigh DAA has already trained 1,800 Dementia Friends, enabled 39 businesses to become Dementia Friendly and supports three weekly dementia-inclusive social activities. Councillor Grandon was elected chairman of Babergh District Council at the Full Council meeting on Wednesday 22 May. She succeeds Councillor Barry Gasper who stepped down following a year as chairman. Councillor Grandon was first elected to Babergh District Council in 2011 and had served as Cabinet Member for Communications before being nominated as chairman. She is the Independent Member for Hadleigh South. Councillor Grandon said: “I am pleased to nominate Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance as my charity. I first became involved when the organisation started in 2014, during which time I, and many others, have learnt about the impact of dementia and the number of people it may affect. The charity is very active in Hadleigh and surrounding villages; I have attended the regular social events the charity holds for people living with dementia and their carers – they are a lifeline for many and they are fun occasions. I think the work the organisation does to make Hadleigh dementia friendly and raise awareness is very important too, so I am delighted to give Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance my support.” Tracey Loynds of Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance said: “Councillor Grandon has been a supporter of the HDAA since we were formally recognised as working to become a dementia friendly community in 2014. Selecting us for her year of fundraising will support our work in making Hadleigh a dementia friendly town which we are immensely grateful.”

NEWS / OUT & ABOUT HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP Hay Fever Help and Advice Patients who suffer from hay fever are being encouraged to visit their local pharmacy for help and advice. With an estimated one in five suffering from hay fever, the next few months could be an uncomfortable time, with symptoms including a runny, itchy or blocked nose, sneezing and itchy, red and watery eyes. You can help protect yourself from hay fever symptoms by wearing wraparound sunglasses, while showering and changing your clothes after being outdoors helps prevent pollen spreading around your home. Staying indoors when the pollen count is high and smearing a small amount of Vaseline inside your nose helps to prevent pollen settling on the inside of your nose. One of the best ways to control hay fever is with antihistamines, which you can buy without prescription. Start taking them now so they can get into your system. Taking antihistamines regularly is more effective than taking them only when your symptoms are bad. Eye drops or nasal sprays can also be purchased from your local pharmacy or supermarket. Make your pharmacy the first place you go for help and advice with hay fever. You don’t need an appointment to speak with the pharmacist and you’ll be saving yourself time, freeing up GP appointments for people with more urgent needs. Visitors & Returning Students Before all the bags are packed, please ensure your guests check their prescription medication and some just-in-case medications before they leave home. They needn’t prepare for every illness imaginable, just a small bag with the most necessary pills and medicine. It’s easy enough to pick up a domestic remedy over the counter, but some medicines may be limited to prescription only. The same goes for allergy meds and asthma remedies, pack them too! If your guests need to travel with prescription medication, suggest using a pill organiser. Keeping the medicine they need well stocked and ready means they won’t interrupt their holiday with a trip to the doctor or the pharmacy. Guidance for patients travelling abroad for three months or less • Pre-existing condition Take with you sufficient medication to cover the journey and to allow you to obtain medical attention abroad. A 28-day prescription is sufficient. If additional medication is required, you are advised to register with a local doctor once abroad. A prescription cannot be issued for patients who are already abroad. • Just-in-case Treatments GPs may not prescribe on the NHS any medication which is requested solely in anticipation of the onset of an ailment while outside the UK, but for which treatment is not required at the time of prescribing (e.g. travel sickness, altitude sickness, antibiotics or rehydration sachets for diarrhoea). • Taking controlled drugs abroad Patients travelling abroad with controlled drugs, irrespective of the duration of travel, are advised to carry a letter, issued by the prescribing doctor or drug worker. Travellers are advised to contact the embassy, consulate or high commission of the country of destination (or any country through which they may travel) regarding the legal status and local policy on the importation of controlled drugs. • Malaria prophylaxis Patients are advised to purchase prophylaxis over the counter where possible. GPs will not prescribe medicines to prevent malaria on the NHS.

OUT & ABOUT HADLEIGH LIBRARY ONE PAGE FOR A CHILD, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR THEIR WELLBEING Summer is upon us again, and with it comes the Summer Reading Challenge. Since its inception 20 years ago, the Summer Reading Challenge has been a great opportunity for children to have fun maintaining and increasing their reading levels throughout the school holiday. Reading for pleasure is such an important part of development and the benefits vary from increasing literacy to giving a child higher levels of empathy, confidence and wellbeing.
HADLEIGH COMMUNITY CHOIR The forecast wasn’t good when we sang at Somersham Wheelie Fun Day in May, but we were under cover and the only person risking a drenching was our musical director, Sarah Gallop, undaunted as ever! We even tempted fate by including Skyfall from the Bond film, but it didn’t rain and the crowds even got some sunshine. Singing outdoors is fun but very different because the sound gets carried off across the fields instead of reverberating as it does indoors, so some rabbits and birds round Somersham must have been puzzled with the unexpected concert. Our big summer concert is Movie Magic on Saturday 13 July at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church (URC) in Hadleigh when we’ll be singing film tunes such as Mrs Robinson, Shadowland, a James Bond medley and Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire. I know you want to ask so I’ll tell you – Jai Ho means ‘Let there be victory’ in Hindi and if you’ve seen the film it is a great rousing song. Tickets are available from Keith Avis and The Idler.
The aim is for each participant to choose and read six books over the summer and visit their local library to have relaxed chat with a staff member or volunteer about their choices. The best bit is that there is so much to choose from: novels, joke books, fact books, and in different formats too, braille, audio and e-books. There are stickers and rewards to collect along the way and a certificate at the end. But, we believe that any child who participates, whether they finish six books, four, one, or just a couple of pages more than they would normally, has achieved and we acknowledge their efforts as equally important. Why not have a go as well? Set yourself the challenge to read a book alongside your child over the summer. In celebration of 50 years since the first moon landing, there will be a fun Space Chase theme and Hadleigh Library, along with all Suffolk Libraries, are over the moon to be hosting the Summer Reading Challenge 2019 and are looking forward to seeing you all join in. Registration begins on 13 July and the challenge starts on 20 July and ends on 7 September. To find out more or to register your child, pop along to Hadleigh Library or have a look online: www.suffolk.libraries.co.uk
We’ll also be singing again at St Andrew’s Church, Layham at 7.30pm on Saturday 27 July at a charity event for the church. If you want to join us or just see what it’s like, we rehearse every Thursday evening at the URC. Ring John (01473 823791) or Stella (01473 823477) for more information and check out our photos and video on Facebook or our website. Don’t forget to come and see us on 13 July! www.hadscommunitychoir.onesuffolk.net
THE ORCHARD PLAYERS PRESENT AN AMERICAN IN SUFFOLK It’s 1942 and in a small Suffolk village, Lady Emily’s committee are eagerly planning to welcome the US Servicemen to the newly built airbase on the outskirts of the village. Local girls and best friends Jane and Charlotte quickly catch the eye of two American pilots and love begins to blossom. Little did they know that the events of the Second World War would soon change the lives of both the villagers and the pilots forever. Fast forward 10 years and across the Atlantic to New York City, Charlotte and Frank are worlds away from the tiny village where they first met. For Jane, painful memories mean she’s been stuck in the past, unable to move on. That is until a chance meeting in a New York bar turns Jane’s world upside down once again. Set to the big band sounds and swing classics of the 1940s and 1950s, An American in Suffolk follows friendships, romances and relationships from sleepy Suffolk to the bright lights of NYC. An American in Suffolk runs at Capel St Mary Community Centre from July 4-6 at 7.30pm. Call the box office for tickets: 07793 820215 Panto 2020: Red Riding Hood (9-11 January) We’re always looking to welcome new members to get involved – either on or backstage. Baby Bears Nursery rhymes are a big part of our day in the baby room. We have group time before lunch and dinner where we take it in turns to choose a spoon with a picture of a nursery rhyme. We join in with singing the rhyme and the actions so it’s a great social opportunity for all involved. This part of our day is enjoyed by all and because of this we planned a whole week of focused activities and crafts relating to nursery rhymes and singing. During the week we sang while dancing with materials and bubbles. We also used paint, crayons and glue to create different pictures relating to the different rhymes. Toddling Tigers During half term week we saw the Gruffalos joining the Toddling Tigers. They were very active, spending time building towers, making obstacle courses and helping the Tigers to experiment with engineering skills. We had a barbecue tea for all the children, which was an amazing adventure for all the children and staff. Gruffalos We are heading into our last few weeks with the Gruffalos before the summer holidays. We have created a school classroom that the children have named ‘Gruffalo School’. In this area the children get to experience some of the things that happen at school, such as taking the register. There is uniform for the children to try on and photo books of different schools to look at. The children have loved role playing ‘school’ and being the teacher is a favourite! If you would like further information about our nursery, pre-school, forest school, out of school club or holiday club, please give Emma Deakin a call on 01473 310768 or drop us an email at: info@robinschildcare.co.uk
HADLEIGH HIGH SCHOOL Year 7 Student Leadership Conference
On Friday 24 May, our 12 recently appointed Year 7 Transition Coaches went to a Student Leadership Conference held for seven local schools at the University of Suffolk. The day included a welcome speech, a communication activity for students from different schools to get to know each other and a range of workshops designed to support the development of leadership skills. Student Abigail Woodend said: “The day at The University of Suffolk was brilliant. Throughout the day there were activities teaching you how to be a good, responsible leader. It was a great idea to put everyone with people that they had never met before to build confidence. The first activity for some of us was about empathy; this was about putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes and seeing how they feel. It was a really fun idea, great for getting to know each other. The other activities included working on cooperation, collaboration and constructive criticism. It was a brilliant day and we also got free food which was delicious. We really enjoyed our day learning about being a good leader.” The Transition Coaches will continue to develop these skills as they undertake their roles with the Year 6 primary students moving up to the high school in September. Hadleigh High School Open Morning: Tuesday 9 July, 8.45-10am If you would like to meet our headteacher, Nicola Shingleton, and look around our school, please contact the headteacher’s PA: 01473 823496

SPORT HADLEIGH UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB Under 18s As the Under-18 presentation event took place after last month’s deadline, I now confirm that Joel Cooper won both the Manager’s Player and Supporter’s Players awards, with Shane Murphy receiving the Player’s Player award.
SUFFOLK ROCKETS NETBALL CLUB All our juniors have now started their summer league games in Colchester. We have six teams entered and so far everyone is doing great and having so much fun. On 19 May we entered six teams into the Colchester Youth Rally. It was a fantastic day. Celestial Blue finished fourth in the youngest division. Celestial Pink finished seventh in the Year 7 group, Cosmic finished third in the Year 8 group, Apollo finished fifth in Year 8 division, Saturn finished third in the Year 9 division and Galaxy finished second in the Year 11 group. Well done to all the players!
The night was tinged with some sadness as 10 players will be over the age limit for the coming season and the management team of Martin Cumberland, Dan Alderson and Craig Chidlow were stepping down after two years at the helm. We have recently appointed Tom Camp as the new manager. He has a wealth of experience at youth level and a spell as assistant manager at West Ham Ladies. We welcome him to the club. Beer Festival A very successful weekend was had as the weather played its part too. Thanks go to Andy Grimsey and Pete Tampion for their hard working in organising the weekend, along with the hard working bar staff and numerous helpers for making this event a success.
We also entered three teams into the Suffolk Junior U16 tournament. Our U13 team was the youngest team entered and they finished the morning in first place, beating three U16 teams. They went into the final playing Thetford U16. Unfortunately they couldn’t grab the win, but finished second from 10 teams.

Our two adult teams played in the Suffolk B2N tournament in May. They had a fantastic time and Suffolk Solar won the tournament winning all their games, fantastic ladies! Our Walking Netball continues every fortnight at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre on Saturday mornings from 9-10.30am. This is such a fun and welcoming session for females and males over 14, and is ideal for anyone looking to get back into sport or exercise in a comfortable, non-pressured environment. The session includes refreshments and cake at the end. Our next sessions are on 13 & 27 July, 10 & 24 August. If you have any questions feel free to email Michele at: suffolkrocketsWN@yahoo.com Raffle Prizes and Sponsorship The club is looking for raffle prizes for our upcoming presentation evening where we celebrate the player and team achievements from the season. This is our opportunity to fundraise for the club, which is vital for the club to grow and be able to accept new players. We are also looking for companies who may want to sponsor a team or the club. Sponsors allow us to open our doors to more juniors and adults, provide more kit, which is extremely expensive, and helps the junior teams to compete in larger tournaments and leagues. In July, rehearsals begin for Red Rose Chain’s most ambitious summer season yet as the company celebrate the 20th anniversary of its open-air spectacular, Theatre in the Forest, with their fresh take on Romeo & Juliet. Starting out in 1999 as a one-night event held in the depths of Rendlesham forest, Theatre in the Forest has exploded into the region’s largest outdoor theatre event, beloved by tens of thousands of audience members and regarded by The Stage as ‘Regents Park for the East’. Every summer, families, fans and first-timers all venture together into the event’s woodland home at Jimmy’s Farm to experience Shakespeare as they’ve never seen it before thanks to the vision of Artistic Director Joanna Carrick who specialises in making the magic of Shakespeare accessible and fun for all-ages while staying true to the original text.
The Blossom Appeal team warmly invite you to join them on the morning of Sunday 7 July in Felixstowe to take part in Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity’s annual Walk for Wards event. Walk for Wards is a 10k or 5km walk, run or jog along Felixstowe’s picturesque and varied seafront. You will take in views of the port, admire the beach huts and enjoy the vista across to Bawdsey along the way. Walk together, take in the sea air and do something amazing to raise funds for The Blossom Appeal. It’s suitable for all the family and is wheelchair/pushchair friendly. You can even bring the dog! To take part, register in advance online or on the day at the View Point Café, nr Languard Fort. We look forward to seeing you there. www.colchesteripswichcharity.org.uk/walk-for-wards
Joanna plans to make this summer the biggest and best yet, adding: “At a time when our young people are starting to make their voices heard about climate change and injustice, this play – which challenges the wisdom of our elders and promotes peace and tolerance between warring factions is extremely apt and appropriate. Whether you are new to the story or have seen it many times, there are always great truths in this play as well as passion, hilarity tragedy and love. Our extraordinary cast are going to take the show by storm with a back drop of 1960’s mods and rockers rebels. I can’t wait!” On 24 August, the final Saturday of the run, the company are also throwing a big birthday bash before the show begins to celebrate with all the audience members. Free to ticket holders, the party includes birthday cake and lemonade for everybody, plus all the musical hits of the 1960s and the chance to come dressed up as a Mighty Mod (from House Montague) or a Raucous Rocker (from House Capulet). The location of Jimmy’s Farm offers audience members the chance to explore the wildlife park during the day, and eat in the award-winning restaurant on the evenings pre-theatre dinners are available, or dine al fresco and bring your own picnic (and camping chairs) for that extra festival feel. When they’re not putting their stamp on Shakespeare, Red Rose Chain have an exciting programme of events and community work going on all year round inside their studio theatre venue, The Avenue, located just a few minutes’ walk from Ipswich Train Station. The Avenue is quickly becoming a hot-spot comedy and live music venue for the town, giving Suffolk audiences the chance to see big names like Henning Wehn and Mark Thomas in a much more intimate and cosy space. Whatever your plans this summer, make Theatre in the Forest your mustsee holiday adventure this July/August.There has never been a better time to discover what all the fuss is about! Romeo & Juliet runs at Jimmy’s Farm from 31 July to 25 August. For more details and to book: www.redrosechain.com/theatre-in-the-forest / 01473 603388

CAPEL & ELMSETT METHODIST CHURCHES OVERFLOWING JOY I’ve just had a weekend with my brother and our wives, going through family photos and letters. We have only just touched the surface of all the material we have between us and our sisters going back to the late 1800s.
We sometimes talk about people’s view of life – the optimists – a glass half full, the pessimists – a glass half empty. With my mother, despite the grief, the heartaches and the difficulties it was always a glass overflowing with joy. Is your glass overflowing? Let me know!
There were fascinating letters from India from my Aunty Rose to her mother and family in Colchester, and letters from my mother (before she was married) when she first went out to India in 1935. She describes in great detail the journey, the life, the experience, learning Tamil and the language exams. She describes a meal she was invited to by nurses and doctors in the hospital on the mission compound. They came and dressed her in a sari, put a garland of flowers around her neck, escorted her to the room where they shared the meal, laid out on banana leaves and shared in real Indian hospitality and customs.

She embraced Indian life to the full, bubbling over with enthusiasm at the wonder of it all. She had a degree in geography and botany and delighted in the creation around her. However, there were also hardships, health problems, abandoned children, a lack of water and coping with the heat, but what comes through the letters is overflowing joy in life.

My mum had known grief. On her seventh birthday, her eldest brother was killed on the Battle of the Somme. At university in Reading in 1930 the man she had expected to marry died of galloping tuberculosis. Their dreams of missionary work and having family were dashed.
AT ELMSETT METHODIST
So she accepted that God was calling her as a single missionary to serve in India where her elder sister had already been for many years. Her children would be the Indian children she would teach. One morning she was woken early and asked if she would adopt an abandoned girl. With permissions granted, she and her Indian colleague, Jane Moses, adopted Anbu (Tamil for love). After five years she was due home on furlough, but didn’t feel it was right to bring an Indian girl to Britain in 1940 with the war in Europe starting and so Anbu remained with Jane, with my mother expected to return to India in 12 months. Because of the war, there were no passages for women and it was over five years before she returned, now married to my dad and with a child of her own, Ruth. But that’s another exciting and emotional story to tell for another occasion.
