A WORD FROM THE EDITOR So football season has ended! I’m not exactly a fanatic, but since Jack started playing our weekends are planned around his fixtures (insofar as we ever have a plan). I have spent many, many, many cold and blustery mornings on the sidelines since last September and now it’s getting a little warmer, it all stops and cricket takes over! I propose a swap; winter cricket and summer football. Perhaps I’ll start a petition. Camogie (women’s version of hurling) was always my game, but it’s interesting being the parent rather than the player. Mostly I just want Jack to be safe, but a win always makes for a better weekend. When we lose, the post-match analysis goes on and on and on... Every move, every injury, every tiny transgression is discussed ad-infinitum and then re-enacted just to prove the point. I feign interest, but usually I’m more focused on defrosting my fingers and toes. All that aside I will miss my Saturday mornings with the mums and dads who turn up whatever the weather. We’ve become quite good friends, as have the boys, and it’s fun to spend time with people who share a common interest, some more vocally than others! I suppose that’s why I get so many submissions from groups and clubs eager to welcome visitors or participants, and I hope those of you looking to connect with others find what you need within these pages. For some the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat may suffice, while others might want to find a new hobby or try a new activity. Getting fit might be your priority or you may want to expand your knowledge of a particular subject by attending talks and demonstrations. Finding people with a similar mind-set, who share your interest and welcome you with open arms is, and I mean this sincerely, life-changing. I’ve seen it happen with my mum. She started playing bridge about five years ago and has made so many new friends as a result. In the last two years she lost one of her best friends to cancer and another moved away to live near her family. Without her bridge ‘gang’ mum would be lost and just as they have supported her through difficult times, she has supported them. If you’re feeling a bit isolated or lonely, I hope you find someone or something in the following pages which encourages you to reach out. And if you know someone who would enjoy or benefit from an opportunity to get out and about, perhaps you could be the one who makes it happen. As I could now that my Saturday mornings are mine again for a little while.

NEWS HADLEIGH CHORAL SOCIETY SINGS FOR SUMMER Hadleigh Choral Society is preparing a varied and light-hearted programme of music for their two summer concerts in aid of local good causes. We are including a mixture of light classical songs, show numbers, specially arranged pop songs and a swing medley! The first concert is in aid of Success after Stroke, the Sudbury-based charity which helps survivors of strokes rebuild their lives and confidence. This concert is in Lavenham Village Hall on Saturday 8 June at 7pm. Tickets are £15 (£7.50 for under-14s) and include postconcert canapes and fizz! They are available from members of the choir or via: www.successafterstroke.org.uk/events The second concert takes place the following week in the deanery garden in Hadleigh and is in aid of St Mary’s Church funds. The Dean of Hadleigh, Father Jo Delfgou is keen to show off the beautiful garden behind the deanery, and a summer concert seems the perfect way to do it! The concert is at 3pm on Sunday 16 June; bring your own chairs or picnic blankets, and post-concert afternoon tea is included in the ticket price. Tickets are £10 for adults (£5 for under-14s) and are available from St Mary’s Church, choir members and The Idler bookshop in the High Street. Should the weather be bad the concert will be held in the church. Both occasions will be fun events and a chance to hear Hadleigh Choral Society sing the lighter side of their repertoire. 2019 NEW ANGLE PRIZE SHORTLIST Family, growing up and the impact of change in uniquely East Anglian communities are themes which permeate the six books on the shortlist for the 2019 New Angle Prize for Literature. The competition, organised by the Ipswich Institute, aims to celebrate and encourage excellence in the regional literature of East Anglia. There is an open entry format with no separate categories and the Judges have selected six varied works from an entry of thirty-five entries from which the £2,000 winner and £500 runner-up will be chosen. The competition is kindly sponsored by Gotelee Solicitors and Scrutton Bland accountants. The shortlist consists of three novels; All Among the Barley by Melissa Harrison, Devoured by Anna Mackmin and The Great Level by Stella Tillyard; a volume of poetry with Esther Morgan’s The Wound Register; and two non-fiction works, Low Country, Brexit on the Essex Coast by Tom Bolton and Self & I by Matthew De Abaitu. The ultimate prize-winners will be announced at a presentation dinner to be held at Hintlesham Golf Club on Wednesday 3 July. This event, hosted by Leslie Dolphin from BBC Radio Suffolk, is an opportunity to meet the shortlisted authors and listen to the Judges’ review of all six books. Suffolk Libraries are running a Readers’ Choice competition in conjunction with the New Angle Prize and the winner will also be announced at this event. NEWS WINNING DESIGN SELECTED IN EACH/HADLEIGH MAID COMPETITION
TENDRING HUNDRED SHOW 2019 On Saturday 13 July the 104th Tendring Hundred Show, held at Lawford House Park near Manningtree, will take place. Now established as one of the largest one-day events in the region, today’s show is unrecognisable from the event that first took place at Thorpe Hall in 1899 as a cattle show and ploughing match. The show attracts more than 21,000 visitors from across the region every year and is only made possible by the time and commitment of over 200 volunteers.
Earlier this year East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and Hadleigh Maid Chocolate launched a competition for children 12 and under to design the outside of one of their delicious selection boxes. The winner would see their design for sale in selected stores and online raising valuable funds for the charity. With over 200 entries it was a tough job to narrow down the best of the best and even harder to select the winner. Entries ranged from dinosaurs eating chocolate to Easter chicks, penguins, unicorns and chocolate bar cartoon characters. The judges were looking for something eye-catching that worked with the values of EACH values. Judging was carried out by Victoria Matthews from EACH, Gavin Bowie, Marketing Director at Hadleigh Maid and Natalie Morris of Brick Marketing. The final winner was Olivia Howieson (9) from Bildeston Primary School, who is pictured with Hadleigh Maid director Donny Briggs and Vicky Matthew. Her mum said: “We are very proud of Olivia and her achievement, winning the Hadleigh Maid design your own chocolate box competition means a lot to her and we are all looking forward to seeing her artwork on the selection box when it is produced.” Gavin Bowie said: “The design fitted the space available on the front of the pack really well and it stood out for being cheerful and bright, bringing colourful rainbow rays of chocolate joy in an arc over the top of two children holding hands below a glowing and optimistic sun which all seemed very appropriate for the EACH cause.” The artwork has already been sent to the graphics team at Hadleigh Maid and is expected to be available for sale by September. Ten per cent of all the sales from this box will be donated to the charity. Thanks to all the entries we received from Elsenham Brownie Group, Woodhall Primary School, Hintlesham and Chattisham School and St Mary’s Primary School in Hadleigh.

The 2019 show president is local dairy farmer Philip Smith, following in the footsteps of his grandmother who was president back in 1966, and his father, Andrew, who was president in 1992. It is fitting that the show’s main theme will be The Delights of Dairy, focusing on dairy themed hands-on activities, including a live milking parlour. Philip explained: “Dairy farming in the eastern region has a proud history. Visitors to the theme area at this year’s show will have a chance to see first-hand what we do as dairy farmers and the wide variety of dairy products we are responsible for producing and consumers enjoy.” Animals are a highlight for many visitors. There will be an array of showing classes for horses, cattle, sheep and goats, culminating in a grand parade of livestock in the president’s ring, the first time the grand parade has taken place for over 20 years, and a great opportunity for champion livestock exhibitors to show off their winning animals. By contrast, another first for the show will be Jason Smyth’s Adrenaline Tour. Jason is an ex-world championship moto-cross rider and will bring a main ring display crammed with spectacular tricks on his quadbike. There will be more than 250 trade stands and exhibitions to visit this year, and the show organisers are delighted to confirm that trade stand space for the main showground was fully booked by mid-March, which is hugely encouraging and testament to the popularity of the show. So, whatever your interests, the Tendring Show is certainly the worth a visit. FLOWTON IN FLOWER – JUNE 22-23 The tiny Suffolk village of Flowton is opening its gardens for the first time in four years. As well as a dozen very different gardens to visit, there will be an exciting display of military vehicles and a range of other events to keep the whole family happy. Flowton’s delightful 13th century church will also host a colourful flower festival on the theme of Nursery Rhymes. Refreshments, lunches and cream teas will be available throughout the weekend at St Mary’s Church.

BURSTALL SHOW MOTO GP AUCTION PRIZE 2019 We have been given the very generous prize of two Paddock Passes for the British Round of the FIM Moto GP taking place at Silverstone Circuit on Sunday 25 August. The passes have been very kindly donated by Vislink Technologies, the official RF Systems supplier (radio frequency and camera) to MOTO GP. Passes are valid for all four days of the event and allow the lucky winners to enter the circuit anytime from 11am on Thursday 22 August all the way through to Sunday 25. Thet include entry to the circuit and unlimited access to the paddock area where the teams can be seen getting prepared. THE ORCHARD PLAYERS It’s 1942 and in a small Suffolk village, Lady Emily’s committee are eagerly planning to welcome the US Servicemen to the newly built airbase on the outskirts of the village. Local girls and best friends Jane and Charlotte quickly catch the eye of two American pilots and love begins to blossom. Little did they know that the events of World War 2 would soon change the lives of both the villagers and the pilots forever. Fast forward 10 years and across the Atlantic to New York City, Charlotte and Frank are worlds away from the tiny village where they first met. For Jane, painful memories mean she’s been stuck in the past, unable to move on. That is until a chance meeting in a New York bar turns Jane’s world upside down once again. Set to the big band sounds and swing classics of the 1940s and 1950s, An American in Suffolk follows friendships, romances and relationships from sleepy Suffolk to the bright lights of NYC. You would think someone had done something really quite terrible to illicit this kind of terminology and yet, somehow, something that is as natural as the sun rising has been, and often still is, a taboo topic.

ZAHA HADID: ARCHITECTURAL RADICAL Quay Theatre, Sudbury, Tuesday 18 June at 2pm Dame Zaha Hadid (31.10.50 – 31.3.16) was one of the greatest architects of the age and the first woman to receive the RIBA Gold Medal. Known for her aggressive geometric designs, her buildings included the Heydar Aliyev Centre, Baku, Azerbaijan and the MAXXI Museum of Contemporary Art & Architecture in Rome. Closer to home these included The Mind Zone exhibition space at the Millennium Dome 1999 and the London Aquatic Centre for the 2012 Olympics. Some of her too avant-garde but beautifully rendered designs are exhibited as works of art in major museums.

Along with many other people and organisations, Suffolk Libraries is proud to be part of a growing movement to tackle the awful situation of period poverty and also the stigma that can be connected to the subject itself. As if it wasn’t bad enough to see a rise in food bank use, it has come to light of late that many women and girls are unable to afford basic sanitary items. Because for so many years we have been reticent to openly discuss the matter as a public norm, there have been very negative effects; from missed school and work days to quite frankly dangerous and unhygienic home substitutes. We should all feel a little embarrassed; not because of talking about periods but because we haven’t been doing so in a grown-up and sensible manner. Times though, they are changing; as well they should be, else we’d all still believe that the sun moves around the earth and that an exposed ankle was the height of indecency. Hadleigh Library has become one of many within Suffolk Libraries who now have a selection of sanitary items that can be discretely – or as openly as you would like – given to those who are in need. It’s a no-questions-asked service where anyone can (themselves or on behalf of another) pick up a form from within the library showing what they need and hand it to a member of staff who will fulfil it to the best they can. We have been lucky to be supplied with some items from supporting organisations: East of England Co-op, Pink Parcel and Bloody Good Period, but if you would like to help by donating, please do talk to a member of staff. STOUR VALLEY U3A On Wednesday 12 June Dr Stephen Ashworth, Senior Lecturer at UEA, will present Lies, Damned Lies & Statistics. How good are we at intuitively judging probabilities? Should everyone be able to earn more than the average wage? Is it a scandal that doctors, dentists and academics are below the national average? An excursion into statistics and probabilities will encourage critical consideration of the statistics with which we are bombarded every day. On Wednesday 10 July Paul Stancliffe, Media Manager of The British Trust for Ornithology, will talk to us on bird migration. He will explain what we know and what we don’t know and how the BTO is using the very latest technology to uncover the mysteries of bird migration. We will follow cuckoos, nightingales and swifts as they undertake amazing journeys to and from their wintering grounds. Our meeting on August 14 is a member’s only event and will be held at the Venture Centre, Lawford CO11 2JE at the normal time. Further information will be given at the June and July meetings. Each month The Coffee Grinders meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt CO7 6SD from 10am to noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members and gives all members the opportunity to meet the activity group leaders and the committee while enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 28 June. We meet at Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2.15pm. Annual membership is £12 which entitles members to attend meetings on the second Wednesday of each month.

OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS STOUR VALLEY MEN’S PROBUS CLUB On Wednesday 5 June, Norman Jacobs will bring back memories of Light Entertainment from the 1920s to the 1950s. Two weeks later on 19 June, Cathy Shelbourne will present a talk entitled In the Wake of the Mayflower. Peter Jones will talk about The Martello Towers of Essex on 3 July, and on 17 July Liz Barringer will talk about the work of The Leonard Cheshire Homes.
HADLEIGH & DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB This is a busy month for us with plenty on offer. The club is visiting Peter Beales roses at Attleborough on Monday 10 June and we have two dates for your diary. Hadleigh Hidden Gardens: Saturday 8 June Make sure you visit the garden of club member Gale Pryor at Toppesfield Mill House, Tinkers Lane. National Open Garden Scheme: Sunday 23 June Sue Mordey, another of our members, is opening her garden at Hillside, Union Hill, Semer for the first time this year under the National Open Garden Scheme. Short Story Writing Competition
Our Year 10 students did exceptionally well representing the school with all three winning entries coming from our school. The students were given the opportunity to take part in a writing competition organised by Suffolk One and the University of Suffolk. The challenge was to write a short story of 500 words on the theme of ‘Journeys.’ The story could be based on an adventure, a journey of growth, a fantasy story or any journey imaginable. Congratulations to the following students: Winner: The Refugee by Hollie Warner 1st Runner-Up: The Princess by Genevieve Vander Arend 2nd Runner-Up: Journey through the Forest by Maddy Damant The winning entry and runners up will be able to read their story at the prestigious University of Suffolk end of year event, as well as receiving Amazon vouchers. Our club endeavours to be simple in structure, free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs and involve members at minimal cost. ROBIN’S NEWS Baby Bears The Baby Bears went on an exciting outing to the garden centre and park which provided an opportunity to explore new environments while furthering learning and development, particularly speech and language as the adults encouraged conversation by pointing out what we could see. Toddling Tigers We have welcomed some new Tigers this month and through creative activities they have had the opportunity to explore their new nursery. We have created lots of opportunities for social interaction to take place, such as picnic role play in the garden, hide and seek and group times to support the making of new friendships. We have also introduced ‘Tiger Fingers’, a selection of fine motor activities to support the development of early writing skills. The Tigers have also been busy participating in activities involving natural objects and their gross motor skills have been improved via bike riding, jumping on trampolines and doing obstacle courses. Their fine motor skills have improved through playing with hammer and nails/tapart and using scissors to cut playdough. Gruffalos We have welcomed new children and have loved exploring our new garden water wall, music station and climbing corner. We have also enjoyed a trip to the allotments where we planted seeds, had wheelbarrow races, used rhubarb leaves as a shelter, smelt lots of lovely herbs and even made our own delicious herby dips! The older Gruffalos are already starting to talk and prepare for their new school. We are looking forward to helping and supporting them with this transition. Forest School Baby Bears and Tigers have recently started forest sessions. They are all enjoying the new Thursday morning adventures playing under the blossom trees, jumping in muddy puddles, painting with natural items like leaves, catkins and dandelions, searching for mini beasts and watching these marvellous creatures in their natural habitat. A real hands-on learning experience! The Gruffalos continue to explore and test their physical skills in a supportive environment. We have been making our own forest school ladder and the children helped to saw the wood and then learnt how to secure the steps. The ladder has been used to climb trees and to cross the muddy puddle before the crocodile gets us! Climbing is so good for the children; it empowers them to risk assess and proceed at their own pace. The children’s accomplishments are a joy to see; their proud little faces say it all. SPORT / church news HADLEIGH UNITED FC 1st Team Round-Up The first of our last three matches of the season saw a 4-1 home defeat against Thetford Town with Romario Dunne scoring our solitary goal. Easter Monday saw a trip to a very sunny, warm Stowmarket Town which saw us involved in a very competitive match against the high flying hosts. Despite going a goal down, a wonder goal by Tom Driscoll saw us earn a deserved point. A 2-1 home win against Newmarket, with Kieran Turner scoring both goals, saw us clear of the drop zone, finishing in 16th place and securing TNL Premiership status for the coming season. Reserve Team Round-Up With their season finishing on April 6 and other teams with matches to play, their league position is unconfirmed as yet. Veterans Round-Up As mentioned in my last ramblings, the Vets finished their season with back-to-back league wins which will see them promoted to Division 3 for next season. Presentation Evenings The Veterans held their presentation evening on May 11 with Chris Dennett named Manager’s Player, Paul Sheldrake names Most Improved Player, Ben Goodchild named Top Goal Scorer, the ‘WAGS’ Player of the Season went to Richard Kossick and the Kevin Knight Award to Gregg Hills. Friday, May 17 saw the 1st Team and Reserves, along with supporters and committee, for their presentation night with the following awards being made. The 1st Team Manager’s Player and Supporters’ Player was Romario Dunne, with goalkeeper Nick Punter receiving the Players’ Player award. The Reserve Team was a clean sweep for Jack Lambert as he received Manager’s Player, Supporters’ Player and Players’ Player awards. Baby, toddler, children and youth groups We have two-midweek groups. One, run jointly with our friends from the URC, is for babies and toddlers with their parents or carers and is called The Ark. It meets on Friday mornings from 9.30-11.30am. A new group for School Years 5 and 6 called Equip runs every Thursday in school term time from 7-8pm. Everyone has questions in life, but not all questions are created equal. Some questions are really big, and they can become sticking points to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. On selected Sunday evenings at 6.30pm we are seeking to answer those questions. Why not come along to hear more and be a part of the Q&A following each talk? Everyone welcome! CHURCH NEWS CAPEL & ELMSETT METHODIST CHURCHES AN UNCHANGING HOPE I’ve just watched the final episode of the third series of Victoria featuring the Great Exhibition of 1851, showcasing the technology and industry of the world in the mid-19th century. Prince Albert was the driving force behind this great enterprise. What changes have taken pace in the intervening 168 years, from the great steam engines to the driverless cars of today! There have been six monarchs in the UK and 30 prime ministers (as of May 13). My maternal grandfather was born midway through Victoria’s reign in 1867. For me it is quite close to the numerous changes that have taken place over his and my lifetimes.

We have just had a visit from our nephew, who with his wife, have bought a property in France which they are renovating. Because they are not yet living there full time, they have bought a robotic lawnmower to keep the grass cut in their absence. I’m feeling my technology is now way behind, not that I need to have the latest gismo! My current mobile phone is dying and needs replacing and I am bewildered at the choice available. Contrast that with the constancy preaching of my grandfather starting in 1884, and my preaching today. The message is the same: the offer of new life in Christ, the gift of forgiveness of sins, the hope of an eternity in heaven with Christ. All this is made possible by Jesus who died for us upon the cross and rose from the dead. Peter describes it as being given new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It’s a message that is still relevant. The context may have changed, but the need for forgiveness is as great as ever, the need to have purpose and meaning still powerful, the need to love and be loved, to belong, the need to hope for something not just for this life, but for eternity. I’m still in the process of being transformed. Jesus is still working on me. Will you be open to his work in your life? I am convinced He loves you.
