In Touch with Hadleigh

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR The game has just ended! I’m utterly devastated but have spent the last ten minutes trying (unconvincingly) to persuade my eight-year-old son it’s not the end of the world. It’s all falling on deaf ears just now, but hopefully not for long. We will pick ourselves up and we will come back, and next time we will have experience on our side. Well done boys. Football might not be coming home today, but you will be given a heroes’ welcome when you do. As a Galway girl I have experienced a similar degree of disappointment more times that I wish to acknowledge. So much of the summer (every summer) in Ireland revolves around GAA fixtures and it’s impossible not to get caught up in the excitement. We grow up playing hurling and camogie and the rivalry is intense, especially at club level. Every game is analysed and every move dissected ad infinitum until the next game. Then it starts all over again. Sport can be cruel, but when it’s joyful, there really is nothing quite like it. When you support a team, you become a member of an extensive community. Even though I’m 500 miles from home I feel proud when I fly the Galway flag. That sense of heritage, that wonderful belonging, will stay with me forever. I shall forever be a Galway girl. Of course I’m now also a Suffolk girl and I’ve been as caught up in the excitement of the World Cup as everyone else. Even if you’re not a footy fan, I hope you have engaged with the World Cup in some small way and that the feel-good factor stays with you for a long time. I also hope it inspires you to appreciate the value of shared experience and to seek out opportunities to spend time with others without the expense of a longhaul flight. Whether you choose a sporting activity (either as participant or spectator), a coffee morning, a walk or a talk, there are opportunities aplenty in your local community and I hope In Touch motivates you reach out and grab the ball with both hands.

NEWS ALL HADLEIGH MUSIC FESTIVAL JULY 2018 The festivities kicked off on Friday, July 6 with busking in the marketplace, including the Meddlers from Old Spice and rising talent Felix Simpson. Felix was so popular he was asked to make a return visit to the Saturday vintage market a week later. Boudicca Border Morris also performed in the marketplace and invited the audience to have a go at dancing and knocking sticks together. The steampunk styled group then entertained a crowd at The King’s Head. Two of Hadleigh’s leading groups staged special summer nights. The Folk & Acoustic Club combined spots by local favourite acts, with special guest Sally Ironmonger who came from Chatham with a selection of saucy songs, culminating in the Victoria Wood classic Let’s Do It. Hadleigh Community Choir presented nature inspired songs in their Rhythm of Life summer show. The finale number was an arrangement of Africa and there was a well attended afterglow reception to both events in the United Reformed Church and Ansell Centre. Last, but most certainly not least, was a summer swing and jazz concert by The Three Chordettes (pictured). The Sunday afternoon review was hosted by kind permission of Miranda McIntosh at the Old School Bridge Street. The three singers were led by Lisa Day and dressed in wartime Land Girl inspired outfits. Their vintage hits got everyone In the Mood and managed to get many of the sell-out audience up and swinging along. A collection was held to support the St Mary’s appeal for a soprano quartet of outdoor musical instruments at the primary school. Thank you to all the musicians and organisers, along with financial support from Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Hadleigh Town Council and The Gables B&B plus generous individual donors.

THANK YOU FROM SUFFOLK SINGERS I would like to thank the 108 people who came to the Suffolk Singers last concert in St Mary’s, Hadleigh on Saturday, June 30. From the comments of the audience as they left we know you enjoyed both the choir and the performance of Lucas, our young clarinettist. It makes a difference performing to a full house and we hope to return some time in the future. Our next concert is in St Michael’s Church, Framlingham on October 6. Watch out for details. NEWS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO PUT IN THE FRAME AT HADLEIGH & SUDBURY

VISIT HADLEIGH The four new town guides are looking forward to helping visitors or locals discover more about our ancient market town. Regular Past & Present tours are on Saturday at 11am, £4 per person and departing from the bus station.

A charity’s popular volunteer recruitment drive – that sees people add themselves to novelty frames such as the one pictured – has been relaunched after great success last year. Be a Name in our Frame aims to get people helping out at one of the 32 East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shops across the region. EACH relies heavily on volunteers to run its shops, that collectively raise over £900,000 towards the vital care and support the good cause provides for children with lifethreatening conditions and their families. Last year EACH ran Be a Name in our Frame twice, in May and October, with 97 people signing up to help its shops. The charity’s shop in Hadleigh is specifically looking for: • Someone to sort and organise donated items • A keen eye to sift through donations and pick out high-value items for eBay • A friendly and welcoming face to operate the till on Saturdays Anne from Hadleigh (pictured) has been a volunteer for four years. She gives up four hours each week “to help support the cause”, operating the till and providing assistance for customers.

Tours can be provided by arrangement at other times. Gift vouchers are also available for any of the tours. We are adding to the repertoire of walking tours with a new drama tour this year. Miss Lawrence Goes Shopping (1918). Discover the types of shops and how they sold their wares. What was life like for the spinster seamstress? Tour One: Hadleigh Past & Present A Viking King, a fearless long-distance aviator, an artist and plantsman are all part of our story. Weekday group tours can include a visit, only with a town guide, to the Memories of Cedric Morris exhibition in the Corn Exchange. Tour Two: Walking with Trees Discover the origins and mythology of some of nature’s elder statesmen. Tour Three: Miss Lawrence Goes Shopping (1918) Town tours can be arranged at other times for clubs, groups and societies. You’ll find tour details on the WHAT TO SEE AND DO page at: www.visithadleigh.co.uk For all enquiries contact Jane 07748 710598 / snowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk

David McGough has been a volunteer for six months. He “enjoys helping out the charity” and the “friendly” environment. Maureen Henderson is retired and has volunteered for three years. She believes helping out is a “lovely way to meet new people and do something useful”.

CONTENTED DEMENTIA?

Ian Nicolson, EACH Head of Retail and Trading, said: “We really appreciate the hard work of every single one of our volunteers, but we can always use more help to keep our shop running and I’m sure there are others like Anne, David and Maureen.

With all the media coverage of dementia, it’s little wonder that most don’t want to think about it! But people affected by dementia can be helped to live a life free of distress if those caring for them understand how the world looks to the person with dementia.

“We find volunteering is a two-way process. Whilst as a charity we gain from the gift of their time, our volunteers make friends and learn new skills, too.”

Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance is offering two opportunities to find out more on Saturday, September 1. Called The Contented Dementia approach, it is based on understanding dementia from the point of view of the person with the condition.

For both families accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. The charity has to generate 84% of the money it needs to operate and relies on public support to continue its service. To become a name in the EACH frame at Hadleigh, drop by or call Sharon Thomas on 01473 828436. For more information about EACH, go to: www.each.org.uk

“It’s such a relief to know that everyone understands and feels positive about what we can all do if we work together.” Come and find out more on September 1 at the Guildroom in Hadleigh’s Guildhall. “I had such a happy time with my father because I had an understanding of what it is like to have dementia. It was inspiring to know that he wouldn’t end his life in a miserable sedated state.” 12.30-1pm: A short open meeting to hear about The Contented Dementia approach 1.30-4.30pm: A free workshop for family carers and care staff to learn more about the approach To book your place on the workshop, please contact HDAA: 07522 935179 / hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk Put a note in your diary now!

Despite the noise and dust from building work opposite, Sue Ryder at 112B High Street, Hadleigh is open for business and looking forward to seeing customers.

NEWS CAROLINE URSELL TO BRAVE THE SHAVE Caroline Ursell, a practice nurse at Hadleigh Health Centre, has decided to have her head shaved to raise money for Macmillan through their Brave the Shave campaign. Here in her own words, she explains why. “I am a part time practice nurse at Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice and a part time parish nurse in Capel St Mary. I have decided to Brave the Shave and have my head shaved to raise money for Macmillan. Statistics now suggest that one in every two of us will be affected by cancer at some point in our lives. I want to raise money to support these people. “In the run up, I let my daughter, Sophie (7) decide what colour to dye my hair so I have red and purple hair for the next month. It has started a lot of conversations at work and at school! I am having my head shaved at noon on Friday, August 3 at Hadleigh Health Centre 3. You’ve welcome to come and watch! Sophie is looking forward to helping shave my head. “There are a few ways to sponsor me. You can sponsor me online at www.bravetheshave.macmillan.org.uk by searching for my name, Caroline Ursell. “Alternatively you can text SHAVE 12689 to 70550 to donate £5 to Macmillan Cancer Support. There is also a bucket at Hadleigh Health Centre if you would like to put cash in there instead. “Thank to everyone who is supporting me and sponsoring me to raise money for Macmillan. “If there are any hairdressers in Hadleigh who would like to volunteer their time to come along to the event and neaten up the head shave then please get it touch.” Caroline I applaud your commitment, and your bravery. Perhaps you can submit the ‘after’ picture for next month’s edition!

NEW DEDICATED CLINIC IN HADLEIGH OFFERING EARWAX REMOVAL Every year in the UK, approximately 2.3m people experience problems with earwax and need to have it removed. With more and more GP Surgeries reducing their wax removal services and long delays to get an appointment, one local hearing care company has joined forces with a Hadleigh Healthcare Centre to try and help. The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at Health by Design on Hadleigh High Street, will be offering both ear syringing and micro suction from Thursday, August 16. The private ear care clinics will be held every other Thursday morning between 9am and 1pm. The award-winning company that celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, also runs a hearing clinic from the centre every Tuesday, which helps those in need with hearing difficulties. For more information call 01473 230330 or visit: www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/waxremoval

ELECTRIC CHARGING POINTS COME TO HADLEIGH An electric vehicle charging point has been installed at the Maiden Way Car Park in Hadleigh, making the town more accessible for green minded motorists. Babergh District Council has installed the ‘fast’ charging point and have now opened it for public use. Up to two cars at a time can use the point at two special parking bays in the Maiden Way Car Park on Magdalen Road, Hadleigh. Electric vehicles can charge using the Type 2 Mennekes connector, the most common electric charging connection. The point provides electricity at a cost of 30p per kW with a £1 connection fee. Payment is accepted via a smartphone app or using a contactless RFID Card available from EVDriver. The charging point was installed by EV Driver, a company who have installed charging points across the UK and worked towards CO2 reduction over the last nine years. This is the second charging point installed by EV Driver for Babergh District Council, following a similar point installed in the Kingfisher Leisure Centre Car Park in Sudbury last September. Councillor Tina Campbell (pictured), Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Car emissions are one of the largest contributors to air pollution, which can have a devastating impact on people’s health as well as on the environment. We are encouraging motorists to swap their petrol or diesel cars for electric vehicles and making it easier for them to do so by installing this charging point. This will enable residents and visitors to Hadleigh to travel in a more environmentally-friendly way.” Drivers can find further details of the network and register online to make payments: www.evdriver.co.uk

OPENING OF OUTSIDE PICKLEBALL COURTS IN CAPEL ST MARY On Sunday, July 1, South Suffolk Pickleball celebrated the opening of their four outside courts. The club was formed after the chair, Sue Nicol, discovered Pickleball (a cross between tennis, badmington and table tennis) while on holiday. After returning home she tried to find a club to continue playing, but was disappointed to find that there was nowhere local. South Suffolk Pickleball was formed at the end of January 2018 and now has 40 members ranging in age from 16 to 72 years. Pickleball is the fasted growing racquet sport in North America, but is still in its infancy in the UK, although it is rapidly gaining in popularity. The beauty of this game is that all ages can play together. It is believed that there are only about six or seven clubs who are lucky enough to have outdoor courts. The club also plays indoors at East Bergholt Sports Centre on Monday and Friday evenings and at Hintlesham Community Hall on Thursday mornings. The addition of the outside courts will enable the club to further increase their membership. For more information see: www.southsuffolkpickleball.co.uk / www.facebook.com/groups/sspball

NEWS MACMILLAN FUNDRAISING: LONDON TO PARIS IN MEMORY OF EDDIE ROGERS On July 25, my dad and I will be embarking an on a crazy adventure, riding from London to Paris on our push bikes in loving memory of my late Uncle Eddie. That’s 310 miles in four days! Eddie (pictured) sadly passed away just before the New Year after a long two-year battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed by his wife Doreen, three children, Jason, Dean and Kerry, and their families. Although this brought sadness upon our family, I’ve found inspiration from the kindness of the Macmillan Nurses and carers to do what I can to help them to continue doing their amazing job. Uncle Eddie was a true legend, he had numerous friends and everyone loved his cheeky grin and helpful nature. Eddie and his wife Doreen had been residents of Sproughton for over 50 years and Eddie was a well-known member of the local community. Eddie loved a beer or two and could often be seen at the Wild Man, British Legion and Bramford Bowls Club. Indeed, in the last few years Eddie became more and more involved in the bowls club and took particular delight in seeing his grandson Callum develop into a very promising bowler. So, in my own way cycling to Paris was the least I could do to play my tribute not only to this lovely, wonderful man, but also as a way of saying thank you to those wonderful staff at Macmillan who gave Eddie and the family such tremendous support during this sad time If you feel you would like to make a contribution to help us raise as much as possible then please go to my justgiving page via this link: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/missionforeddie Ronnie Bradford

Keith Searby one of the co-organisers and a member at Hintlesham, said: “We believe by choosing a local charity and therefore knowing that the money will stay in the county we can really help those who are our neighbours. We hope you feel this is a worthwhile cause and that you can support us and join us on the day.” The golf club are looking for sponsors for the event so as well as contributing to the charity, the golf club shall feature sponsors in the printed programme, on the golf club website and to all their members through the weekly newsletters. NEWS

REPORT TO PARISHES, MID-SAMFORD WARD: JULY 2018 BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR SUE CARPENDALE Update on Hadleigh Office Site The June council decided to adopt one of three options proposed for the regeneration of Babergh’s former offices. They will now focus on developing a planning application for some 58 new homes, predominantly apartments, but with some new build houses. The listed buildings must be maintained but adapted, and some of the 1980’s extensions will also be developed into apartments. Sadly, what is probably the best council chamber in the county will be demolished to make way for this project. Before opting for housing, assessments for other uses were investigated. • Commercial office space: the current market within a seven-mile radius of the site is for space considerably smaller than Corks Lane, with very low demand. It seems unlikely that an organisation of significant size would be looking to relocate in Hadleigh. • Retail: very little local demand and considered to be too far from the town centre. • Leisure use: e.g. a boutique hotel as part of a mixed development – is viewed as a weak and unpromising market. • Residential care: a possibility, but McCarthy and Stone currently have a scheme under development in the High Street, and the problems associated with the flood plain limit this option. • Residential: Hadleigh is an emerging town, with good demand for housing and situated within commuting distance of the city. The preferred option, therefore, is to retain and convert all the listed buildings and the part of the 1980’s extension that lends itself to conversion. Bridge House will be demolished with some new-build homes

on that area of the site. The current open green space will be protected. All of the assessments and designs were carried out by consultants. It remains to be seen how and by whom this regeneration will be taken forward. There are lingering concerns amongst members about the actual commercial value of the site to the council and whether there will be the promised revenue stream to help the council’s finances. Arguments about the impact and benefits of moving to Endeavour House continue. We are aware of significant staff turnover in the last year, with many experienced officers leaving us, and issues of sickness and stress. There is at least some good news in that the Council anticipates shortly hiring some new officers to the planning teams. Councillor Allowances The report and recommendations from the Independent Remuneration Panel predictably caused much argument. As the annual allowance (fully taxable) paid to councillors had not been reviewed for some years and at Babergh had fallen below comparable councils, the proposed percentage increase seemed high. While many councillors are older and retired, there is a real need to encourage younger people to come forward and be compensated to some extent for time and money lost at work. Councillors carrying out both their official duties and dealing with case work in their local patch, are probably busy at least 25 hours a week. Past panels have said councillors should regard at least half of their time as voluntary, but that there should also be some financial compensation. sue.carpendale@babergh.gov.uk

BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR FENELLA SWAN Electric Vehicle Charging Point comes to Hadleigh Babergh District Council have installed a ‘fast’ charging point for electric vehicles at the Maiden Way Car Park in Hadleigh. Up to two cars at a time can use the point at two special parking bays. Electric vehicles can charge using the Type 2 Mennekes connector, the most common electric charging connection. The point provides electricity at a cost of 30p per kW with a £1 connection fee. Payment is accepted via a smartphone app or using a contactless RFID Card available from EVDriver. Property Investment Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s property investment management company, CIFCO Capital Ltd, has made six acquisitions in its first year which are generating an annual return of £1.4million. Each of the two councils has invested £25million and has a 50 per cent shareholding in CIFCO, which reports to two holding companies, Babergh District Council (Suffolk Holdings) and Mid Suffolk District Council (Suffolk Holdings).

10

two councillors, Councillor Nick Ridley from Babergh District Council and Councillor Derrick Haley from Mid Suffolk District Council, plus three industry expert directors, not linked to the councils, who have a background in investment banking and property investments. Solar Panels Solar Together Suffolk is a pioneering bulk-buying project supported by Suffolk County Council and local borough and district councils. It aims to bring affordable solar power to Suffolk and boost the county’s renewable energy. It comes at a time when many residents are interested in exploring solar energy but would welcome a helping hand to make an informed decision and find a trustworthy installer. Similar projects have delivered a discount of 25-30 per cent to homeowners on the cost of a solar panel system. It follows successful smaller test schemes in Norfolk and London, and many other larger scale schemes in the Netherlands and Belgium, where over 50,000 residents have installed solar PV systems.

A report to the Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee in June showed that at the end of the first year’s trading, a total of £23,572,000 has been invested by CIFCO in six assets, generating a total of £1,410,466 in annual rental income. Although the financial details are commercially sensitive, the report shows that 36 out of 46 potential assets were rejected. CIFCO submitted offers on the other 10 assets and acquired six.

After a turbulent few years in the solar market, the numbers are again beginning to add up for households interested in generating their own renewable energy. Despite the reduced Feed-In Tariffs, rising retail electricity prices and lower prices for solar modules, solar is again an attractive offer for the UK domestic market. Typically, domestic users can expect their investment in solar panels to be repaid within 10 years.

CIFCO is on target to invest the full £50million six months ahead of schedule. Once fully invested, the entire portfolio is expected to generate around £2.8million a year.

Homeowners, schools, small businesses and community groups have until August 21 to register for free and without obligation at: www.solartogethersuffolk.co.uk

The report also included details of the CIFCO board, which comprises

A 28 day prescription is sufficient. If additional medication is required, you are advised to register with a local doctor once abroad. A prescription cannot be issued for patients who are already abroad. In exceptional cases (e.g. where you are constantly travelling and are unable to register with a local doctor) you may be prescribed up to a maximum of three months’ supply. Please note that where medication requires frequent monitoring, for example warfarin, it may not be appropriate to prescribe for such an extended period. 1.2 Just-in-case treatments GPs may not prescribe on the NHS any medication which is requested solely in anticipation of the onset of an ailment while outside the UK, but for which treatment is not required at the time of prescribing (e.g. travel sickness, altitude sickness, antibiotics or rehydration sachets for diarrhoea). You are advised to purchase these items where possible. A charge may be levied for writing a private prescription for such pre-emptive medication. For conditions unresponsive to self-medication, you should normally seek medical attention abroad. NB: Many UK prescription only medicines are available to purchase without a prescription abroad.

The children were all very excited when we took our butterflies to the nature area in the park. We released them into the wild, where they all flew away onto the wild flowers. We will be revisiting the park with our families for our end of term picnic and shall be saying some goodbyes to those children and families who will be leaving us for school or nursery. We wish them well with their next steps. We wish all our families a happy summer holiday and look forward to welcoming some of you back, along with our new children, in September. We look forward to hearing all your news. During the holidays we will be holding a Fun Morning on Wednesday, August 8, 10am-noon, which is open to all under 10s along with an accompanying adult. See our website or Facebook page for more details. We are now enrolling for September 2018. If you would like to visit playgroup please contact us: 07999 866419 / admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Ladybird Toddler Group takes place every Wednesday morning during term time, 9.30-11am at Layham Village Hall. It’s a drop-in group and is open to all children from birth to five years. We have a range of toys and activities ranging from a quiet baby area to role-play, small world, playdough and crafts.

2. NHS patients living or travelling abroad for more than three months of the year Take with you sufficient medication to cover the journey and to allow the patient to obtain medical attention abroad. A 28 day prescription is sufficient. You are advised to register with a local doctor for continuing medication; this may need to be paid for by yourself. You should check with the manufacturer that the medicines required are available in the country being visited. GMS regulations state that patients should be removed from the GP practice list by the NHS England Area Team where notification has been received from the patient that they intend to be away from the UK for a period of at least three months. 3. Taking controlled drugs abroad Patients travelling abroad with controlled drugs, irrespective of the duration of travel, are advised to carry a letter issued by the prescribing doctor or drug worker. Travellers are advised to contact the embassy, consulate or high commission of the country of destination (or any country through which they may be travelling) regarding the legal status and local policy on the importation of controlled drugs. 4. Malaria Prophylaxis Patients are advised to purchase prophylaxis over the counter where possible. GPs will not prescribe medicines to prevent malaria on the NHS. OUT & ABOUT THE RHYTHM OF LIFE

Hadleigh Community Choir performed two ‘hot’ concerts on Saturday, July 7. The title was apt with Mr Blue Sky, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Climb Every Mountain, Rhythm of Life and Africa dotted among the gentler, melodious songs like Fields of Gold, Moon River and The Rose. The large audience in the evening loved the opening of Africa with the choir simulating a growing and crashing thunderstorm which blended in to the opening chords. Blue Moon finished the concert on a rousing, loud and energetic high. Many of you will know that the Christmas Present Trust, including members of the choir, provide Christmas dinners for those who would otherwise be alone at Christmas. The choir invited them and their carers to hear a performance in the afternoon before the main evening concert. Several in the audience joined in the songs and one sitting near musical director Sarah Gallop helpfully joined in with Sarah’s conducting. It was a warm (in more ways than one!) and moving event for all involved. Our Christmas concert is on December 8 at the United Reformed Church, and before that we perform in the Civic Service on September 23 at St Mary’s Church, the Suffolk Hate Crime Vigil on October 15 at the Cathedral in Bury St Edmonds, and for the British Legion on November10 to commemorate the centenary of end of the First World War. Come along and join us, or even better come and join the choir! Just turn up at a rehearsal at the URC on Thursday at 7.15pm. Tony Dewhurst

THE ROTARY CLUB OF HADLEIGH The Marks Hall Garden and Country Show is a fantastic family event that raises funds for three local charities, Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, Colchester Rotary and the Marks Hall Estate. The show gardens and the stunning arboretum are amazing. On July 29 we have our BBQ day when club members, family and friends meet to enjoy good company and fellowship. The food is first-class and the desserts are particularly scrumptious. While we are having an enjoyable time we raise much needed funds for our club. The Rotary Club of Hadleigh meets twice a month at lunchtimes in Hadleigh and if you would like the opportunity to serve your local community and enjoy good company you would be most welcome to attend a meeting to find out what we do. FRIENDS OF CAPEL LIBRARY Well here I am sitting at my keyboard on a hot, sunny afternoon. It’s 23C outside and I’m desperately trying to think of ideas to write about. I would like to tell you that we have been celebrating England winning the World Cup, Chris Froome winning the Tour De France or Johanna Konta winning Wimbledon, but without the benefit of a crystal ball I can only hope some of these became reality. I can tell you about some past and future events. At our recent Alzheimer’s Society Cupcake Day we were lucky enough to raise £135 for this very worthy cause. Thank you for all of your support and for all of the wonderful cakes that were either baked or donated. I think I can honestly say that everybody who attended thoroughly enjoyed eating them. If you have children who like building with Lego, why not bring them along to Capel Creators Club in the library on Saturday, August 18 at 10.30am. We provide the Lego; all you need to provide is the imagination. The club is held monthly and each session is themed. If you choose to build to the theme you can enter the monthly competition which is judged by your fellow creators. Attendance is 50p per child and includes a cold drink and a biscuit. We’re on a run of really enjoyable films, The Greatest Showman in June, followed by the very funny film Finding Your Feet in July. Our next showing, Darkest Hour, is no exception and is expected to be extremely popular so get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. The film is being screened on August 21 (doors open 7pm) and is “a thrilling and inspiring true story that begins at the precipice of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation.” We will again be attending Bentley Funday on September 9, with lots of books for sale at unbelievable prices. Please come along and say hello, get some reading material for the long winter nights and take the opportunity to support the library by joining the Friends Group. All you have to do is be a member of Suffolk Libraries and be over 18 years old. We will have plenty of application forms available and membership is a mere £1 per annum and, as always, all monies raised will help us to maintain or upgrade facilities at the library. One last date for your diary is Saturday, November 24, when we will be holding our annual quiz night. Last year’s proved to be a very popular event, with 17 teams entering. Hopefully we can beat that this year. Trevor Stevenson

SPORT / CHURCH NEWS SUFFOLK ROCKETS NETBALL CLUB July brought the end of our first season at the club. It’s been an amazing season with so many achievements and we are so proud of every junior and adult player. Our two adult teams finished their first summer league; both teams did amazing and every week they showed more and more improvements as individuals and as teams. Congratulations to all our ladies who came Back to Netball this season; it can be a huge step coming back to a sport you may not have played since school but the benefits are amazing! If you are over 16 years and would like to try netball, we start again on September 12; no need to book, just turn up from 8-9.30pm for £4.50. On July 4 the club held its first presentation evening. Some of the adults and juniors won awards for most improved players and players of the season. Well done to Brooke Worth who was selected as the club’s Most Outstanding Player of the Season (pictured right). Brooke started the club in September with minimal netball experience, but soon became an amazing defender who was selected to train at the Suffolk Development Academy and was a valuable member of Saturn Rockets team. Next season looks to be a busy one with our junior teams increasing from two to four, and we start training Year 5s. Our adult teams will start their first competitive winter league and look to enter tournaments. We are still looking for sponsorship for two of our junior teams and our adult teams; if you would like more information please contact the club. EAST BERGHOLT UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB Pre-season training got under way in the July heat, inspired by England’s first ever penalty shootout victory. The First Team season kicks off on August 18, with the Reserves following on August 25, and the A team on September 1. We are delighted to announce that recently retired from playing stalwart Andrew Peck, has agreed to take over as A Team manager. We are always looking for people who can help the club as committee members, whether it be on the playing side or just in the background. If you would like to sponsor the club in some capacity we would also be delighted to hear from you. Club strips, dugouts, banners or boards on matchdays are all potential exposure for your business while supporting a local organisation. Steve Butcher: stevebutcher55@btinternet.com

CHURCH NEWS

LOCAL SERVICES GUIDE

CAPEL & ELMSETT METHODIST CHURCHES R&R AND HOLIDAYS I am a bit of a workaholic. Some may question the word ‘bit’, but I love my job and I get paid to do it (not a huge salary, but enough). As someone from Workaholic’s Quotes puts it, “If loving your job qualifies you as a workaholic, then yes, I am one for sure!” I trained as an engineer, after four years I became a chartered engineer – I loved my job – but I also loved the volunteering I was doing in the church. I probably worked over 40 hours per week as an engineer and over 20 hours a week as a volunteer. In 1978 (40 years ago), I went back to university and was trained as a church leader. I now do over 50 hours per week for the church and probably an additional 20 hours volunteering for the church or community. I still love the opportunities. I am privileged to be able to say I have loved all the very different places where I have worked as an engineer, minister and volunteer (Coventry, Northampton, Bristol, Zimbabwe, The Wirral, Downham Market and now Suffolk). To advertise in this section, which appears in 18 magazines in areas across Suffolk and Essex, please contact a member of our sales team on 01473 400380

I also love holidays and rest and recovery periods. I am planning for a holiday and then planning to go part time in September and planning a sabbatical next year. I could be retired, but many retired people I know are busier in retirement. I’ve got many volunteers in my churches who are retired, and they are so busy they wonder how they had time to work. So I’m going to work part time, to give me some extra hours for visiting and supporting our extended family, to read books from my extensive library, to write to explore the countryside, to research my family tree, perhaps even get the garden into better shape. I saw on the internet that mind mapping is now being used for holiday planning, people listing those things that are important and linking them so that it happens. I haven’t done that yet, but meeting family and friends, exploring this amazing world, worship as well as rest and recovery are all part a parcel of who I am and will also be part of the holiday. I know I am in Cornwall on the first Sunday and I will know a handful of people worshipping there. On the second Sunday, it’s unlikely I will know anyone except the one we worship, Jesus. When I worked in Sweden as a student engineer, I didn’t even know the language on the first Sunday I went to the local church, but I could share in the worship, I felt part of the family. We have one Father God. Wherever I have been, I have found people with whom I can worship and discover new brothers and sisters in Christ. If you are off on holiday soon, enjoy, be who you are without pretence, even get to know the real you and not the mask you put on at times, and I invite you to discover God all around you.
