A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

NEWS

It hardly seems appropriate to write about anything other than the tragedy at Grenfell Tower which continues to dominate our news with new horrors exposed almost daily. It’s a shocking sight in print and on TV, but a friend who passed close to the blackened tower last week tells me the pictures don’t come close to capturing the awfulness of it. She found herself staring at it in disbelief as people walked by, heads bowed. The outcome of the official investigation won’t be known for at least a year, but thankfully action is being taken to prevent similar disasters elsewhere. We can only hope this work is completed before more lives are lost and send our condolences to those who lost family members, friends and neighbours at Grenfell Tower, and indeed all those who lost everything except the clothes they were wearing. When horrors such as this occur we tend to hold our loved ones a little closer and appreciate what we have a little more. Often our own problems seem a little less all-consuming, at least for a little while. It’s also a reminder to check that our own homes and those of vulnerable neighbours or elderly relatives have adequate fire protection and working smoke alarms. Did you know you’re four times more likely to die in a fire if you don’t have a smoke alarm that works? Around half of home fires are caused by cooking accidents while two fires a day are started by candles and faulty electrics (appliances, wiring and overloaded sockets) cause around 6,000 fires in the home across the country every year. Take a moment today to inspect your home and then take any necessary action to protect it and those who live in it. You’ll find lots of information online and you may even be eligible for a Home Fire Risk Assessment or Home Fire Safety Check which you can book with your local fire and rescue service. You can also make enquiries on behalf of another person: Suffolk: 01473 260588 / Essex: 01376 576000

St Elizabeth Hospice’s Bubble Rush at Christchurch Park last summer

HOSPICE’S BIG, BUBBLY EVENT IS BACK FOR 2017 This August, St Elizabeth Hospice is bringing back its highly popular family event Bubble Rush! Bubble Rush is a fun-filled, foamy 5km walk or run that will see people of all ages getting covered in colourful bubbles this month in aid of the local charity. On Sunday, August 13, hundreds of people will run, walk, dance or skip around a 5km route at Christchurch Park. The route will feature four ‘bubble stations’ which each have different coloured bubble cannons, covering you in safe, frothy foam! Catherine Sheppard, St Elizabeth Hospice’s events and challenges fundraiser, said: “Last year was the hospice’s first ever Bubble Rush and the event was a huge success, with more than 1,500 local people taking part and getting covered in colourful bubbles all for a good cause! “Bubble Rush is an ideal event to take part in with your family, friends or co-workers as it’s fantastically frothy and fun for people of all ages – whether you’re six or 60!” Registration is now open and this year there is also an option to get the cost of registration back if you raise £100 or more for St Elizabeth Hospice. All the money raised from St Elizabeth Hospice’s event will go towards improving life for people living with a progressive illness such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart failure. To sign up to be part of the fantastic frothy fun, call 01473 723600 or visit: www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/bubblerush

exciting range of dancing opportunities near and far opens up. After this course you will be able to progress into our structured courses for improvers and intermediates.

The 10-week course (in two five-week blocks) aims to provide a solid foundation in the key elements of Argentine Tango in an enjoyable sociable environment. It concentrates on how to lead and follow the fundamental steps of tango. The dance is improvised to the music so there are no long sequences to learn.

Prior booking is essential, but there is no need to book with a partner as we will match followers and leaders if we can. Bookings will be confirmed once we have checked leader and follower numbers (all the better if you can bring a partner). We always rotate partners during the class to speed the learning process and to make the evening more fun.

Our current dancers are of all ages, some coming with a background of ballroom, salsa or modern jive, but many have never attended dance classes before. Once you try Argentine Tango you will soon get hooked and an

Something fabulous is happening in Felixstowe. The story of Philip Thicknesse, Governor of Landguard Fort 1753-66, is being brought to life in the place where it all happened. This site-specific production developed by Woven Theatre Company offers a whole new perspective on a man who should be better known as an important figure in Felixstowe’s and Suffolk’s history. As you know, Landguard Fort is a spectacular location with a big central courtyard surrounded by rooms, fortifications, underground passages, an outer bailey and a moat and Philip Thicknesse is a character you will never forget. He was a man with very little respect for authority, but gained great loyalty from his men and was adored by his wives! Written by two local playwrights, Peppy Barlow and Sally Wilden, and led by four professional actors with the involvement of members of the public, Felixstowe Community Choir and the historic re-enactor volunteers based at the fort. Specially commissioned puppets – the governor’s monkey Jacko and his wife Ann’s parakeet –will add to the fun. Tickets (£12 / £6 for under 18s) are on sale through Eastern Angles: 01473 211498 / www.easternangles.co.uk For more information visit: www.philipthicknesse.com Do book up early and be part of the fun. Landguard Fort will never feel the same again.

Oh my goodness – what a summer we’ve been having! June broke temperature records, with the hottest temperatures recorded in 40 years, and as I’m writing this it looks as if July is going the same way. Wonderful as this may be for the sun-lovers amongst us, it has meant that our poor plants have needed a lot of TLC. Water, water and more water, and even then, many are showing signs of stress because of the heat. Vegetable harvesting is well under way and you should be able to start lifting onions at the end of the month. Just watch for the tops starting to fall over and then start to lift (fingers crossed they haven’t bolted with all this sun). Soft fruit bushes are at their most bountiful right now – as long as they’ve been well-netted to keep the birds away! Apples and pears can be thinned a little, giving remaining fruit a chance to swell without being cramped as they begin to ripen in the sun. It feels harsh, but you really will notice the difference in the fruit that you leave behind. If your tomatoes are displaying black sunken splotches, then have a look at your watering habits. This can be a sign of calcium deficiency, so make sure you’re watering regularly. Don’t allow the soil to dry out; they really don’t like it. One last thing, though… in the midst of all the hard work, don’t forget to enjoy your garden, or allotment. Take time to sit in the sun and survey the fruits of your labours. Bask in the warm, long evenings and spend time just watching, and listening, to nature revelling in the last weeks of the summer. Unplug, switch off, and just be. Your sense of well-being will thank you for it. If you’ve ever fancied growing your own, we do have a few plots available at our picturesque Rushmere St Andrew site. New members are always made very welcome. If you’re unsure if allotmenting is for you, why not go for one of our half-plots? OUT & ABOUT / SPORT BRIGHT STARS At our Bright Stars session on Monday, July 10 we sadly said goodbye to Jennie Fidler who has been on the Bright Stars team for more than three years. Everyone at Bright Stars would like to thank her for all her help and enthusiasm and we wish her all the best in her future activities. Youngsters from birth to five years old are welcome to join us at Bright Stars for a fun start to the week with their parents, grandparents, friends, family and/or carers. We meet at St Michael’s Church Centre, Martlesham Heath IP5 3PL from 10.30am to noon on the second and fourth Mondays of each month during term times. These mornings are free and usually involve singing, games, making crafts to take home and telling stories from the Bible for the first half hour. We then have refreshments when the adults can chat and the children can play until approximately noon.

FAMILY SUMMER DAYS AT RSPB FLATFORD WILDLIFE GARDEN Well, it’s August already and the summer’s flying by. The swifts are on their way back to Africa, but we can still enjoy the sight of swallows and martins wheeling above us at Flatford Wildlife Garden. Generally our garden birds are rather quiet and a little more difficult to spot at this time of year. They’re going through their annual moult and as they renew their feathers they can’t fly with their usual speed and agility. This leaves them more vulnerable to predators so they tend to lay low for a while. They still appreciate a regular food source though, so do keep the feeders and water topped up even if their presence isn’t quite so obvious in your garden. Did you know that bumble bees have smelly feet? Or that sparrows have an extra bone in their tongues? Or that the silver birch is known as the ‘Lady of the Forest’? All will become clear if you come along to the garden during weekdays in August as we continue our programme of family activities. These are the themes we have planned for the following weeks, commencing with the Monday dates: July 31: What’s so special about trees? August 7: We haven’t forgotten the birds! August 14: The humble bumble bee August 21: What’s so special about trees? August 28: Round up of the holiday activities We will be offering a selection of theme-related activities each weekday, so there’s bound to be something that your children will enjoy. There is a small charge per child that covers all the activities on offer that day, with a discount for members, or free on that occasion for those who join the RSPB on that day. For more details visit: www.rspb.org.uk/flatford We look forward to seeing you. If you have some spare time available and would be interested in volunteering with the RSPB locally, do get in touch for information about the range of roles available: 01206 391153 / shirley.sampson@rspb.org.uk Visitor Experience Officer Sharon Barker

Dates for the autumn term: September 11 and 25, October 9, November 13 and 27 and December 11 You are welcome to come along to any of our mornings; just turn up, no need to let us know in advance. If you would like further information please contact: Sonya & Maureen Burrows – 01473 625196

IPSWICH WANDERERS FC The FA Cup and FA Vase draws have not been kind to Wanderers. The 1st Team have been drawn away from home in the early rounds of both competitions. However, the first Premier Division fixture will be at home to Walsham Le Willows on August 1. The club have decided to make this a ‘Pay What You Like’ match. The normal admission charges will not apply, but fans are invited to give what they think the matchday experience at The Doucy Stadium is worth. Admission is normally £6 (£4 concessions). The FA Cup has seen Wanderers drawn away to Hullbridge Sports of the Essex Senior League in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. This tie will be played on Saturday, August 5. Away support is most welcome. The winners of the tie will receive £1,500 and an away tie in Essex or Hertfordshire in the Preliminary Round. The prestigious FA Vase, that also has its final at Wembley Stadium, has drawn Wanderers at Spixworth, a Norfolk side new to the Thurlow Nunn League. Victory would give us a next round match at Wroxham. Forthcoming fixture at The Doucy Stadium, Humber Doucy Lane: Tuesday, August 1: v Walsham Le Willows, KO 7.45pm Please look at the Ipswich Wanderers website for other home fixtures as, at the time of writing, the league have not published these. News on the player front is that almost the entire squad from last season have re-signed for the coming campaign, along with some promising youngsters from the academy and the Under 18s. Goalkeeper James Bradbrook has transferred to Ryman League Bury Town, but Jack Spurling, who kept goal for Brantham Athletic last season, has replaced James. Fans may remember Jack’s previous spell at Wanderers and his wonderful saves that ensured an FA Cup victory over Canvey Island. Club captain, the experienced Mark ‘Goldie’ Goldfinch, will again lead the side. Rumours of Mark’s retirement from the game proved to be just that and it would be great if cup success were to come our way in what might be his last season playing football at this level. Mark started his football at Wanderers and went on to play at a higher level before returning to The Doucy. The club is hoping that manager Shane Wardley and his team can build upon the top-half finish achieved last season. Come and join the growing band of Wanderers supporters as we look for success in league and cup… Ipswich’s premier football club. Keith Lloyd

ON THE GRAPEVINE / CHURCH NEWS HONOUR A LOVED ONE WITH HOSPICE’S SUNFLOWER MEMORIES St Elizabeth Hospice is inviting people to dedicate a beautiful sunflower emblem to remember someone special this summer with the return of their Sunflower Memories appeal. The name of loved ones no longer with us will be written on the sunflower emblems which will then be displayed in sunny yellow wheelbarrows in the hospice’s garden in return for a donation. The sunflowers will be on display from Sunday, August 20, and anyone is welcome to come along and see the display of sunflowers and take time to reflect on memories. Pauline Donkin, St Elizabeth Hospice’s fundraising development manager, said: “Once again, this summer, anyone is welcome to make a donation and dedicate a sunflower in memory of a loved one, whether they have been cared for by the hospice or not. Our glorious garden will host hundreds of little sunflowers, creating a sea of colour, displaying the names of loved ones who are no longer with us. All the money raised from the donations for the sunflowers will go towards providing vital care and support to more than 2,000 patients and their families every year.” The preview day on Sunday, August 20, will be held at the hospice on 565 Foxhall Road, Ipswich. The sunflowers will remain on display until August 31 for patients, families, volunteers, staff and visitors to enjoy. The sunflowers will then be available to collect from the hospice reception until September 30. Last year’s Sunflower Memories appeal raised more than £14,000 and it is hoped that this year will be just as successful. To find out more and to dedicate a sunflower, call 01473 723600 or visit: www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/sunflowers

IN WORDS – SUFFOLK LIBRARIES’ SPECIAL SUFFOLK DAY COMPETITION Suffolk Libraries is reminding budding writers there is still plenty of time to enter a special Suffolk Day competition. The first ever Suffolk Day last month also coincided with National Writing Day so Suffolk Libraries invited people to submit their own Suffolk-inspired piece of writing. The best entries will be published in a library eBook compilation through the Suffolk Writes project which people will be able to download for free from the online Suffolk Libraries eLibrary. Anyone is welcome to submit their own short stories, essays or poems with the theme of Suffolk, or what they love about the county. Suffolk Libraries can only accept entries submitted electronically in a Word document via email to: suffolkwrites@suffolklibraries.co.uk All entries should have a theme of Suffolk and can be a short story, essay or poem. Entries might feature a place in Suffolk, be inspired by Suffolk, or could focus on what you love about the county. Entries should be your own work and in submitting them you are agreeing to allow Suffolk Libraries to publish them in an eBook compilation which will be available for all library customers to download and read for free. Anyone submitting an entry should also fill in and attach a permissions form: www.suffolklibraries.co.uk/assets/doc/suffolk-writes-permissions-formfor-contributors.doc Entries should be no more than 2,000 words or 40 lines for poetry. The deadline for entry is Monday, August 14. Anyone looking for inspiration can also check out Suffolk Libraries’ online list of suggested titles which celebrate the county’s fine literary tradition: www.suffolklibraries.co.uk/ new-suggestions/articles/titles-for-suffolk-day

Humans are funny creatures, aren’t they? We come in all shapes, sizes and shades with as many opinions as there are people. Some like church hot weather, some prefer it colder. If everyone who ever lived made a list of their likes and dislikes there would be no two the same.

That God loves you whether you believe in Him or not, and wants to welcome you home into His forever family. That’s the hope for Christians around the globe, a better life to come beyond the one we currently see. Want to find out what it takes to become a Christian? Come and visit us soon. Be blessed this August. Join us on Sunday mornings throughout the year at 11.30am (Café & Children’s Church at 10.30am), for Wednesday Bible Study at 8pm or Young People’s Night on alternate Fridays (see website for details). CHRIST WILL ALWAYS BE ENOUGH We recently had a smart meter installed and as part of the process the installer had to check the whole gas and electricity system to see if it was safe and if it met the current regulations. There has been a lot in the news recently about buildings being tested to see if they meet the current standards. We thought everything was OK – but it wasn’t. In our case, although at some point in the past they would have passed, because the standards and regulations are constantly being updated, on this occasion we had some things which were below par. These didn’t cause any immediate concern, but they would need to be addressed at some future time. As a Christian, it is comforting for me to know that Jesus has paid everything that is necessary for my salvation through his death and resurrection. We sometimes sing in church “Christ is enough for me”. He always was enough and He always will be enough. If you would like to find out more about Jesus, we would love to welcome you on any Sunday morning. We meet in Heath Primary School, Bell Lane, Kesgrave from 10.30am-noon.

CHERRY KITCHEN MAKEOVERS EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE PERFECT KITCHEN I established Cherry Kitchen Makeovers because not everyone wants or can afford a whole new kitchen. Also quite honestly there’s no need for the extra hassle and expense a lot of the time. I knew that with a great range of top quality products, hard work and good customer service we would be a success. I also feel that more and more people like to use local family run businesses as they get a more personal service. Of course I like working with my son Ben as it’s hard to get him round for Sunday dinner nowadays. I even managed to get my other son, Ross, back from university last summer to help paint the new showroom! Our doors are fitted to your original kitchen carcass with minimum hassle, a solution which costs approximately half the price of a full refit. In certain kitchens there is only so much that can be done with the layout and it simply needs an update. We can suggest plenty of ways to create a completely new look while still making the best use of the available space. If you want to breathe new life into your old kitchen call us today on 01206 615858/932466 or visit www.cherry-kitchens.co.uk to request a free brochure.
