A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

NEWS

It hardly seems appropriate to write about anything other than the tragedy at Grenfell Tower which continues to dominate our news with new horrors exposed almost daily. It’s a shocking sight in print and on TV, but a friend who passed close to the blackened tower last week tells me the pictures don’t come close to capturing the awfulness of it. She found herself staring at it in disbelief as people walked by, heads bowed. The outcome of the official investigation won’t be known for at least a year, but thankfully action is being taken to prevent similar disasters elsewhere. We can only hope this work is completed before more lives are lost and send our condolences to those who lost family members, friends and neighbours at Grenfell Tower, and indeed all those who lost everything except the clothes they were wearing. When horrors such as this occur we tend to hold our loved ones a little closer and appreciate what we have a little more. Often our own problems seem a little less all-consuming, at least for a little while. It’s also a reminder to check that our own homes and those of vulnerable neighbours or elderly relatives have adequate fire protection and working smoke alarms. Did you know you’re four times more likely to die in a fire if you don’t have a smoke alarm that works? Around half of home fires are caused by cooking accidents while two fires a day are started by candles and faulty electrics (appliances, wiring and overloaded sockets) cause around 6,000 fires in the home across the country every year. Take a moment today to inspect your home and then take any necessary action to protect it and those who live in it. You’ll find lots of information online and you may even be eligible for a Home Fire Risk Assessment or Home Fire Safety Check which you can book with your local fire and rescue service. You can also make enquiries on behalf of another person: Suffolk: 01473 260588 / Essex: 01376 576000

NEWS KESGRAVE TOWN COUNCIL Parking in the vicinity of Kesgrave High School PCSO Mike Sarbutts has issued a letter regarding parking in the area of Kesgrave High School. The letter comes after concerns raised by local residents and parents of children attending the high school. The letter is available to download from the town council website: www.kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk Kesgrave Fun Day will be back on 9 June 2018 The Big Lunch Fun Day held in June this year was a great success. It showcased the work of local clubs, charities and organisations and there was so much to do and try. The town council’s Community and Recreation Committee received a report on feedback from the stall holders and activity organisers and have agreed that this should take place again next year on June 9, but the event title has been simplified to Kesgrave Fun Day. Although we have barely stored away all the equipment, plans are already being formed for next year. If your business or organisation would like to have a stall, provide an activity for people to try, display what you do or be part of the entertainment, please contact Kesgrave Town Council: 01473 625179 / enquiry@kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk Millennium Jubilee Hall – Summer Parties Are you planning a family celebration or child’s party? Millennium Jubilee Hall in Millennium Way is a fantastic venue, comprising of two halls and a fully equipped kitchen. Looking out onto Millennium Sports Ground and with a fenced outdoor area, it’s the ideal venue for summer parties, whatever the weather. For further details please contact the town council: 01473 625179 / enquiry@kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk Oak Meadow New Equipment Officially Opened Finally, after a supply issue with a part for the cableway (zip wire) and a wait for a post installation inspection, the town council was able to invite all the individuals and organisations that helped with funding towards the new play equipment and the all-weather football surface to officially open them for the public. Chairman Neal Beecroft-Smith thanked SPARK (Sport and Recreation in Kesgrave) for their full funding of the football area, the district councillors who used their Locality Budgets and SCDC for releasing the Section 106 funding from local developments in Kesgrave. Neal is pictured with District Councillors Susan Mower and Stewart Lawson and Steve Allinson from Kompan, one of the play equipment suppliers used in the upgrade. Mobile Skate Park Sessions at Cedarwood Primary School After the May half term was deemed a success, participants said they would like this to be repeated. We are very lucky that our volunteers are willing to give up their time again so that young people can have another chance to either try skateboarding or to improve their skills.

You can bring your own skateboards and helmets and we have a limited number for those who don’t have their own. Our skateboarding coaches have attended the level 1 award to teach skateboarding. They are first aid and safeguarding trained and have been DBS checked. All abilities welcomed. Senior Citizens Outing: Wednesday. August 16 In a change from the usual mystery tour we will be transporting people by coach to The Hut in Felixstowe where, dependent on the weather, you can sit inside and relax, join in a game or go outside to sit near the promenade (weather permitting). There will be the traditional fish/sausage and chips for an early tea. There will be two pick-up points – one is Kesgrave Community Centre and the other is Millennium Jubilee Hall. In addition, a specially adapted bus for disabled persons is available and will collect participants from pre-arranged locations in the town. The coach will leave Kesgrave at approximately 2pm and return at 5.30pm. A charge of £3.50 per resident and £5 for non-residents will secure your place on this trip which has to be limited to 50 people. Please collect an application form from 2nd Stop Charity Shop, the library, Penzance Road Post Office, the council office in Ferguson Way or download from: www.kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk Numbers are strictly limited and allocation will be done on a first come first served basis in the order they are received. Kesgrave residents who would like to join us should make their applications quickly to reserve their place. The closing date (if maximum numbers have not been achieved) is Monday, August 7. Graffiti Art Workshop: Wednesday, August 9, 2-4pm Rapping and Beat-boxing: Tuesday, August 15, 2-4pm Kesgrave Town Council supported by SPARK have arranged for the above activities to be held at Millennium Jubilee Hall during the school summer holidays. Graffiti Art Workshop: This involves being taught about the genre; examples of graffiti art are both shown and demonstrated with participants being taught the basics. Designs are then practised with a pencil and paper, before being transferred either onto a white baseball cap or canvas that the participants get to keep. Rapping and Beat-boxing: This involves a brief introduction to the genre and artist. The participants are performed to before being taught how to structure a rap. Then in groups or as individuals, and with the help of the artist (who also provides beats), they will write some raps and perhaps beatbox interludes. These raps are improved upon and finally performed at the end of the session.

Primary aged children aged five-11 years are welcome from 10am-noon. Secondary aged 12-16 years are welcome to attend the evening sessions from 6-8pm.

These activities are for children aged 11-16 years and there will be an entrance charge of £2 (to be paid before the event). All places must be booked as spaces are limited to 30 children per session. Priority will be given to residents of Kesgrave. Please contact the town council for a booking form: 01473 625179 / enquiry@kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk

NEWS ON THE BUSES Firstly a big thank you to Sharon at In Touch for allowing space in the last issue of the magazine for what turned out to be quite a lot of bus information. The revised bus services in Kesgrave are now up and running and we’ve had some very favourable comments about the new 68 Hospital / Ipswich bus service, with passengers pictured here in Cambridge Road. We’ve also had requests for this to be extended to other areas. Please do let us have your views and we can pass these to the bus company at a later date. The Park & Ride 800 service is now being operated on a commercial basis by First and the buses have a blue livery. The P&R service now stops additionally at Kesgrave Fisheries. There are new timetables at this stop showing the Park & Ride times. A quick reminder: bus timetables are available from Kesgrave Council Office and Kesgrave Library and I have also dropped copies off to the community centre, the Birches Medical Centre, Penzance Road Post Office and other locations. For those with internet access details can be found at: www.kesgrave.org.uk/publictransport / www.suffolkonboard.com Sue Hall, Public Transport Liaison Officer, Kesgrave Town Council, Ferguson Way, Kesgrave IP5 2FZ / publictransport2@gmail.com

BUS NOTES FOR AUGUST 2017 Let me say right at the start that I am very grateful to First for providing the new 68 bus, a local service just for Kesgrave residents, and running directly via the hospital grounds into Ipswich. Having said that, I am disappointed that First seem to be doing little to promote the service, other than including it in the pocket timetable for the 66. But, at the time of writing (in the first week it has operated), nothing seems to have been done to enable the buses to show a correct destination. Apart from the initial trip, which showed ‘61 Town Centre’ (wrong number), all other journeys I have observed have shown, without a number, ‘Special Service’, ‘Shuttle Service’, and one showing ‘Bus Users UK’, an absolutely pointless display of no help to anybody. If buses don’t display their route number and destination, leaving passengers confused that they might get on the wrong bus, then the service is not going to attract casual passengers, which they very much need to make the new route a success. I was also appalled to find that the mere three bus services to Kesgrave are still spread over two booklets. Consequently people who live on the stretches of Main Road which are served by all three still have to keep two booklets handy to find the time of the next bus. I have been pressing First for years to include all of Kesgrave’s bus routes (there were four) in one booklet, but my pleas have always fallen on blinkered attitudes. To paraphrase an army saying, “tiny minds, tiny books”. Whatever are the so-called public relations people at First thinking of? It cannot be at all economic to publish two separate booklets for just three bus routes which all serve the same area.

We welcomed several members from Felixstowe Guild to our quiz night on June 13. Teams of four battled over nine rounds of questions ranging from TV sit-coms to famous Suffolk people. Karen Kenny gave a hilarious talk about herbs on June 27. Well known for her radio broadcasts on gardening, Karen took us through the history of the many herbs and how they were used by herbalists hundreds of years before modern medicine came along. Karen had brought herbs for us to smell and taste and she explained how these could be used in cooking and to flavour cordials. Members were given cuttings to grow and details of how to cultivate and use them. Tuesday, September 5: Eve Regelous will talk about the history of Harrods. Before she retired from her business as a professional event organiser, Eve worked closely with the world famous store for almost a decade. She will talk about the store’s history from its foundation by Essex boy Charles Henry Harrod up to the most recent takeover. Eve will also include a glimpse behind the scenes of day-to-day life at Harrods as it unfolded for both customers and staff. Tuesday, September 19: Ted Wheatley will entertain us with his exploits in a talk entitled 10,000 Miles in Africa. Tuesday, October 3: In a talk entitled Jobbing Professional Entertainer, Peter Regelous will tell us of his life in the entertainment industry. He will recall some of the people he came across during those years and with anecdotes galore, he will tell us some of the best and worst experiences that he has encountered along the way. Peter has been in many sit-coms, soaps and advertisements. The Guild welcomes new members who can visit for two meetings before joining. The annual membership is £15 and we charge £2.50 a meeting to include raffle tickets and refreshments. Meetings start at 7.15pm in the community centre. OUT & ABOUT MARTLESHAM LADIES CLUB KESGRAVE WI Our July meeting was packed, both with the amount of business we covered and the number of members attending. Maureen Swale gave a report of her visit, as our delegate, to the National AGM in Liverpool early in June. Details were given out about Kesgrave WI Craft Day to be held on Saturday, September 23 in the Scout Hall. Members choose two out of four activities on offer and with specialist tutors to guide them will make two items to take home at the end of the day. This year the choices are Dorset buttons, beading, quilling and fairies. In June members enjoyed a very hot and sunny day at The Hut in Felixstowe, complete with paddling, swimming in the North Sea and the customary fish and chip lunch. Seventeen members enjoyed an evening with Karen Kenny at our group meeting. Karen talked about herbs on an amusing and entertaining evening that saw most of us eating a variety of raw herbs before a very tasty ploughman’s supper provided by Nacton WI. Details were confirmed regarding our next meeting in August, our traditional garden meeting in a member’s garden. Our speaker for the evening was a very bubbly, effervescent lady – Magda Snowden – a local hat maker who explained how she went from a classic university degree to making hats and other related accessories. All members made a lovely flower brooch using wired ribbon which Magda judged as our monthly competition: first Jenny, second Enid Castle and third Di Chilver. Our next meeting is our afternoon garden meeting on Thursday, August 3 from 2-4pm. If you require information please call the secretary, Di Chilver: 01473 611415

A total of £370 was raised, bringing our total for the year to £645 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Jane Oliver, one of their representatives, joined us for the morning and will also attend our next meeting to receive a cheque for the charity. After a break during July and August, our first meeting of the new season will be on September 7 when Paula Justa will return to tell us what happens to the materials which are sent for recycling. Our meetings are held on alternate Thursday evenings at 7.15pm in the Richards Room. To find out more about our varied activities contact Doreen Boar: 01473 622768

OUT & ABOUT MARTLESHAM HISTORY SOCIETY Monday, August 14: St Audry’s Melton, 1767-1993 – Workhouse to Asylum by David Phelan

RUSHMERE ST ANDREW’S MOTHERS’ UNION

Asylums are regarded as being grim places and many were. However, St Audry’s had a reputation for being a progressive regime, but why? What caused it to be different? Come along and find out. Meetings are held at Martlesham Heath Pavillion at 7.30pm. Admission £2.50.

August 16 sees us welcoming Dr Graham Platts who will talk to us about being a school principal in Oman. We are very much looking forward to a very interesting talk. Once again, after our Wave of Prayer service reaching out around the world, we will learn more about another country. Closer to home we continue to contribute to local organisations with knitting, sewing, collecting, supporting and prayer. You are very welcome to join us at a meeting every third Wednesday in the Church Hall at Rushmere St Andrew’s at 2.30pm. For more information, contact Hilary: 01473 421073

PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP

IPSWICH & DISTRICT HISTORICAL TRANSPORT SOCIETY Wednesday, September 27: On the Railway Lines to Yarmouth and Lowestoft, illustrated talk by Stuart Mcnee We meet at 7pm at the Salvation Army Citadel, 558 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich. Entrance via the rear car park. Visitors welcome – £3.50 at door including tea/coffee. Details from: 01473 414746/422145 www.idhts.co.uk

During the last working party PWCG volunteers cut back the overgrown vegetation to help clear the pathway into the woods from the Control Tower. Our annual glow worm survey and bat walk was, as usual, on the last Friday of June. We By S Corley saw and heard pipistrelle and noctule bats catching moths and other flying insects using the bat detectors provided. The group also saw a muntjac deer at the beginning on the outskirts of the woods. The glow worm survey showed a continuation in the low population trend of recent years with only seven female glow worms counted. This is very low when compared to our highest counts in excess of 60. We believe the numbers have been declining due to habitat loss and light pollution that prevents the glow worms (which are actually a type of beetle) from finding each other in order to mate. We would like to thank the 26 attendees who came along to enjoy the evening and help count the glow worms for the survey. The group also assisted with pond dipping at Heath Primary School’s Summer Fete (pictured above). The children enjoyed finding the frogs, newts and various pond beetles and larvae very much. Dates for the diary There are no events in August due to the holiday period. Volunteer Work Morning (all ages): Saturday, September 16, 10am-noon Meet at the Education Area; tools, training and light refreshments provided. Nature Explorers (11-18 year olds): Saturday, September 16, 9-11am

Oh my goodness – what a summer we’ve been having! June broke temperature records, with the hottest temperatures recorded in 40 years, and as I’m writing this it looks as if July is going the same way. Wonderful as this may be for the sun-lovers amongst us, it has meant that our poor plants have needed a lot of TLC. Water, water and more water, and even then, many are showing signs of stress because of the heat. Vegetable harvesting is well under way and you should be able to start lifting onions at the end of the month. Just watch for the tops starting to fall over and then start to lift (fingers crossed they haven’t bolted with all this sun). Soft fruit bushes are at their most bountiful right now – as long as they’ve been well-netted to keep the birds away! Apples and pears can be thinned a little, giving remaining fruit a chance to swell without being cramped as they begin to ripen in the sun. It feels harsh, but you really will notice the difference in the fruit that you leave behind. If your tomatoes are displaying black sunken splotches, then have a look at your watering habits. This can be a sign of calcium deficiency, so make sure you’re watering regularly. Don’t allow the soil to dry out; they really don’t like it. One last thing, though… in the midst of all the hard work, don’t forget to enjoy your garden, or allotment. Take time to sit in the sun and survey the fruits of your labours. Bask in the warm, long evenings and spend time just watching, and listening, to nature revelling in the last weeks of the summer. Unplug, switch off, and just be. Your sense of well-being will thank you for it.

New volunteers are always welcome, all ages and abilities. For further information please contact us at pwcg.martlesham@gmail.com / 01473 612632, visit www.pwcg.onesuffolk.net or join our members’ Facebook Group by messaging Duncan Sweeting.

If you’ve ever fancied growing your own, we do have a few plots available at our picturesque Rushmere St Andrew site. New members are always made very welcome. If you’re unsure if allotmenting is for you, why not go for one of our half-plots? For more information, please contact our membership secretary, Angela Brown: membership@kesgrave-allotments.org.uk / 01473 612283

CHERRY KITCHEN MAKEOVERS EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE PERFECT KITCHEN I established Cherry Kitchen Makeovers because not everyone wants or can afford a whole new kitchen. Also quite honestly there’s no need for the extra hassle and expense a lot of the time. I knew that with a great range of top quality products, hard work and good customer service we would be a success. I also feel that more and more people like to use local family run businesses as they get a more personal service. Of course I like working with my son Ben as it’s hard to get him round for Sunday dinner nowadays. I even managed to get my other son, Ross, back from university last summer to help paint the new showroom! Our doors are fitted to your original kitchen carcass with minimum hassle, a solution which costs approximately half the price of a full refit. In certain kitchens there is only so much that can be done with the layout and it simply needs an update. We can suggest plenty of ways to create a completely new look while still making the best use of the available space. If you want to breathe new life into your old kitchen call us today on 01206 615858/932466 or visit www.cherry-kitchens.co.uk to request a free brochure.

SCHOOLS MARTLESHAM AND KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOLS Back in June we had our annual fun day, and what a great event it was. The sun shone all day and everyone who came had a fantastic time. We would like to say a big thank you to not only all who attended but to those who supported and helped either on the day or before the event; we really appreciate it and would find it very difficult to do without you.

HUMPTY DUMPTY PLAYGROUP Our first summer fair was an amazing success, thank you so much to all the stall holders, to everyone who donated raffle prizes, and of course a big thank you to everyone who came along and supported us. It was a wonderful day and certainly lots of fun. Well done to Helen and Gemma who organised it all. It was a sad time for staff to say good-bye to the children going off to school, and their families, as many of the children have been with us since they were two years old and many of the families have become good friends. All staff would like to say a big thank you for all the lovely cards and presents you gave us, we are really going to miss you. Date for the diary: Playgroup returns on Wednesday, September 6 We are an Ofsted registered childcare provider for children from the age of two years onwards. As we are registered as ‘Good’ we can provide funded places for two-year-old children who have received ‘Golden Tickets’ from Suffolk County Council. From September 2017 we will be providing 30 hours of free childcare to children who are eligible the term after their third birthday. Please come in and meet our friendly Early Years team and find out more regarding the governments new Childcare Choices, offering parents tax-free childcare and 30 hours’ free childcare. Within our team, we have staff trained with Qualified Teacher Status, BA (Hons) level 6, and CACHE level 3. Our ratios of staff to children are one adult to four children, so you can rest assured that your child will receive excellent care and attention. We are situated inside Kesgrave Community Centre, Twelve Acre Approach, Bell Lane. You can contact us on 07837 154081 (term time – 8.30am to 4pm) or manager Sally Cutts on 01473 625998 (evenings only).

We had support from many local companies including Empire Cinema’s Flux trampolining, Hairlistic, Beauty at the Grange, Tesco, The Red Lion and Kay’s Fruit and Veg, as well as Bates Well & Braithwaite who sponsored the bouncy castle. At the end of the day we made a profit of just over £1,000. This is a great boost to our fundraising pot; as a charity run playschool we rely heavily on this money to purchase resources and equipment to support the children’s play and learning. Before we reach the new September term we shall be opening our doors for all children from two years old up to the age of five. This will be a Fun Holiday Club running from 8.30am-4.30pm; please email: mplayschool@btinternet.com The term will start back early in September, but if you are still looking for a place for your child please contact us. We have spaces for funded and nonfunded two year olds as well as three and four year olds who are entitled to either 15 or 30 hours of funding. Our settings in Martlesham and Kesgrave can cater for each family’s requirements. Our Martelsham setting will be open all year round, but of course you can split your time if you wish between the two settings. We have children who start with us at the age of two and stay until they go into the Reception class at school. We have a high ratio of well qualified and experienced staff who welcome and support all children by understanding their individual needs. If you wish to visit or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. THE SAPLINGS THREE BEARS PLAYGROUP We finished the term with our summer fair. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and it was great to see so many families old and new. We raised enough money to buy some new trikes, bikes and scooters and other resources for our outdoor space to replace those that have worn out. Thank you to everyone who contributed to make the event a success. Our vegetable patch is looking amazing; the children have taken great pride in watering regularly and checking the plants for snails! And the sun has helped. We enjoyed eating our potato crop and hope to harvest the rest when we return for the new term. We said farewell to our families leaving us at our end of term leaver’s graduation performance. The children sang all their favourite songs and were presented with a book to remember us by. We thank you for choosing Three Bears to send your children to and we wish them well as they move on to their new schools. Please contact us if you are looking for a place for your child to attend a fantastic setting with amazing staff. Call in for a registration form, email us or visit our website: Three Bears Playgroup, Wilkinson Drive, Kesgrave IP5 2ES

We are taking bookings for the summer holiday club and have lots of activities planned. If you would like to send your child to us for some fun packed days please don’t hesitate to contact us. We have spaces in all our rooms for September, and funded two, three and four year olds can use their funded sessions throughout our opening hours and ‘stretch’ funding across Holiday Club. The Saplings is open Monday to Friday from 7.30am-6pm for children aged three months to 11 years, offering term-time and year-round care, with a baby room and preschool, breakfast club, after school club and holiday club and a ‘walking bus’ to Birchwood Primary School. We are pleased to announce the opening of the ‘Twiglet’ room, which caters for our two and three year olds, following our Two’s Count Here programme initiated by Suffolk County Council at the start of this summer term. The room serves as a transitional room for new starters and for children who transfer from our Seedlings (toddler and baby) room, promoting self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as social interaction skills and language within a smaller peer group for later progression to the main pre-school room. We are offering 30 hours of funding to eligible families of three and four year olds from September 2017.

SPORT / CHURCH NEWS KESGRAVE BOWLS CLUB

KESGRAVE CRICKET CLUB

The season is well under way and it’s quite unbelievable how the weeks have flown by. The teams have been doing okay, albeit the captains have struggled somewhat to get a team. This is due to holidays, injuries and illness, all of which cannot be helped unfortunately.

Our last report left our 1st Team second in its division after a run of four wins. We continued that run at home to Abberton. The visitors scored 182-9, Connor Betts taking 3-20 and Sam Colver 2-44. The KCC innings was built around an important 65 by Nathan Young and the two-wicket win was confirmed by 23 not out by Sam Colver at the ‘death’. Next came a run of four away games. KCC scored a strong 248-7 at Elmstead, thanks to half-centuries from Mike Worne, Will Stewart and Connor; three wickets from Sam Colver and two from Ben Howard limited Elmstead’s response to 240-9. Ben was again to the fore at St Margaret’s with 3-28 as the hosts were limited to 1608. KCC won by five wickets on a tricky wicket, thanks to 59 not out by Mike Worne and a dashing 33 not out by Ben Garnham.

Our club men’s pairs was won by Don Baldock and Ken Jennings, the John Larkin Memorial Trophy was won by Jim McKay and the club mixed pairs had joint winners, Gloria Milbourne with David Cook and Tony Fisher with Jim Forsdyke. The club mixed triples was won by Don Baldock and Tony Fisher (it ended as pairs as we had insufficient numbers). Our open charity pairs on June 10 was again very successful and was won by a team of Kesgrave players, Rick Calver and Marty Milbourne. Our next open tournament in August is now fully booked, but we do still have some blocks available for our open pairs on Saturday, September 9. Please contact me if you are interested. If you are interested in trying the game, please let me know and it can be arranged for someone to help and advise you. I hope we continue to have a good season and a reminder that our dinner/presentation evening has been arranged for Friday, December 8; details will be in the pavilion very soon. I really hope our members will support this evening. It’s a good night out with good food and great company. Joyce (secretary), 01473 626075

IPSWICH WANDERERS FC The FA Cup and FA Vase draws have not been kind to Wanderers. The 1st Team have been drawn away from home in the early rounds of both competitions. However, the first Premier Division fixture will be at home to Walsham Le Willows on August 1. The club have decided to make this a ‘Pay What You Like’ match. The normal admission charges will not apply, but fans are invited to give what they think the matchday experience at The Doucy Stadium is worth. Admission is normally £6 (£4 concessions). The FA Cup has seen Wanderers drawn away to Hullbridge Sports of the Essex Senior League in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. This tie will be played on Saturday, August 5. Away support is most welcome. The winners of the tie will receive £1,500 and an away tie in Essex or Hertfordshire in the Preliminary Round. The prestigious FA Vase, that also has its final at Wembley Stadium, has drawn Wanderers at Spixworth, a Norfolk side new to the Thurlow Nunn League. Victory would give us a next round match at Wroxham. Forthcoming fixture at The Doucy Stadium, Humber Doucy Lane: Tuesday, August 1: v Walsham Le Willows, KO 7.45pm Please look at the Ipswich Wanderers website for other home fixtures as, at the time of writing, the league have not published these. News on the player front is that almost the entire squad from last season have re-signed for the coming campaign, along with some promising youngsters from the academy and the Under 18s. Goalkeeper James Bradbrook has transferred to Ryman League Bury Town, but Jack Spurling, who kept goal for Brantham Athletic last season, has replaced James. Fans may remember Jack’s previous spell at Wanderers and his wonderful saves that ensured an FA Cup victory over Canvey Island. Club captain, the experienced Mark ‘Goldie’ Goldfinch, will again lead the side. Rumours of Mark’s retirement from the game proved to be just that and it would be great if cup success were to come our way in what might be his last season playing football at this level. Mark started his football at Wanderers and went on to play at a higher level before returning to The Doucy. The club is hoping that manager Shane Wardley and his team can build upon the top-half finish achieved last season. Come and join the growing band of Wanderers supporters as we look for success in league and cup… Ipswich’s premier football club. Keith Lloyd

www.keepingintouchwith.com/kesgrave

The first half of our next game at promotion rivals Walsham-le-Willows went well; the host were dismissed for just 148 with Ben Howard again taking three wickets and two wickets each for Connor, Ben Garnham and Sanjay Patel. But only Ben Colver (53) coped with the home attack and we slumped to a 12-run defeat. Our bounce back a week later, however, was dramatic. At Maldon, KCC scored a very impressive 312-6, led by Ben Colver’s splendid 128 and strong contributions from Mike (55), Paul Kendrick (36) and Danny McCall (39). The hosts were routed for just 81 with Sam Colver (3-15) and Ben Garnham (3-21) the standout figures in a strong bowling effort. We currently sit third in the Two Counties Division Four, but with the top two still within reach. The last month has brought mixed results but some exciting cricket for our 2nd Team. At Yoxford, opener Kieran Perez rediscovered his splendid 2016 form with a marvellous 132 in KCC’s 234-4. This proved too much for the hosts who were dismissed for 140, Greg Wallen leading the bowling with 3-16. At home to St Margaret’s, Greg, Kieran and skipper Ryan Hoyle took two wickets each in the visitors’ 200-7. KCC were not quite able to capitalise on a strong start, falling four runs short despite solid contributions throughout the batting card. At Stradbroke, 51 by Kieran and 37 by Danny McCall helped KCC to 170-8. The hosts were held to 156-8, Andy Thompson taking 4-15. Another tight finish followed at home to Felixstowe & Corinthians. Neel Patel’s 60 was the main contribution in KCC’s below-par 148 all out, but it was almost enough, Felixstowe sneaking home by just two wickets in the penultimate over (Kieran taking 4-52). Back-to-back wins prove elusive for our 2nd Team at the moment, but they are playing some good cricket and providing great entertainment. Just two games to report for our Sunday (3rd) XI. At BT & Waldringfield, 60 by Connor Betts and 40 not out by Amal Phillip took KCC to 205-9, but BT won by three wickets despite 3-48 by Danny McCall. At Saxmundham, the hosts looked set for a solid total until seveb wickets in just 23 balls reduced them to 135 all out. Rhys Humphreys (4-7) and Connor (3-3) formed the ‘wrecking crew’. Dan Haggar (39 retired) and Ben Retter (39 not out) helped KCC to the win by seven wickets. It has been a month of hot weather and tight finishes. All three of our senior teams have much to play for as we enter the ‘business end’ of the season. Knight Watchman

RUSHMERE CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP We have two fun afternoons of games, activities, crafts and Bible stories from 2-4pm on Thursdays, August 10 and 24 at Rushmere Village Hall on Humber Doucy Lane. CHURCH NEWS CHRIST WILL ALWAYS BE ENOUGH

Declaring God’s Way - Sharing His Love By the time you read this, the school holiday will be in full swing. We pray that all our children will be kept safe during the holidays and that the sun will shine for them. (Don’t tell this to the gardeners though as they will be praying for rain!) At Rushmere Baptist Church we also close activities for the month of August. This gives the leaders a break as well as the children. We must have rest and relaxation to recharge the batteries once in a while. The style of life today is so fast and so busy that people find it hard to relax and let things go. Nowadays Sunday is not the day of rest that it used to be, but sometimes it does us good to just switch off for a while and spend a quiet time of reflection. This year we are having a one day Holiday Club for children on Wednesday, August 2. The Holiday at Home for our older friends will be held on Wednesday, August 9. Otherwise the activities listed below will all be closed until September, apart from the coffee morning which is being held on Saturday, August 26.

We recently had a smart meter installed and as part of the process the installer had to check the whole gas and electricity system to see if it was safe and if it met the current regulations. There has been a lot in the news recently about buildings being tested to see if they meet the current standards. We thought everything was OK – but it wasn’t. In our case, although at some point in the past they would have passed, because the standards and regulations are constantly being updated, on this occasion we had some things which were below par. These didn’t cause any immediate concern, but they would need to be addressed at some future time. As a Christian, it is comforting for me to know that Jesus has paid everything that is necessary for my salvation through his death and resurrection. We sometimes sing in church “Christ is enough for me”. He always was enough and He always will be enough. If you would like to find out more about Jesus, we would love to welcome you on any Sunday morning. We meet in Heath Primary School, Bell Lane, Kesgrave from 10.30am-noon.

Our usual activities are as follows: Monday: FFaF Children’s Club for School Years 2-6, 6.15-7.30pm Wednesday: Rag Tag Drop-in at 2pm on the first Wednesday of each month Senior Citizens’ Friendship Hour at 2.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month Thursday: Luncheon Club at 12.30pm Saturday: Meeting Point Coffee Morning on the fourth Saturday of each month, 10.30am-noon Minister: The Rev Heather Marsden Secretary: Mrs Jean Cutting Church Number: 01473 721455

ALL SAINTS PARISH CHURCH From next month All Saints Parish Church will be providing In Touch with full information of all their services. As this article is literally last minute we basically have services every Sunday at 8.30am (BCP Communion), 10am (modern yet traditional service with All Age alternative) and 6.30pm (Evensong). The exception to this rule is August 6 when there will be a 8.30am service and a Songs of Praise in a marquee at Kiln Farm at 3pm. This will be followed by a ‘bring and share’ tea. We will also be joining St Michael’s Martlesham on August 13 at 5pm for our lively and informal After Hours service. September 10 will see an amazing event in Chatham to which the entire Kesgrave community is invited. Robin Spittle and Sarah Elmer have been involved in an exciting local project about the First World War to commemorate the only resident of the small village of Kesgrave to be killed in the war. This presents the local community, including ourselves, to make a special link with this occasion. Fred Upson was a Kesgrave resident and when he turned 18, he joined the Royal Navy. Not long after he joined, the First World War started. After he completed his training, he was deployed to HMS Blonde. The ship left the fleet and he returned to the Naval base at Chatham. Sadly, a bomb was dropped on the drill hall and many men were injured or killed. Fred Upson was one of the unfortunate men who died. This year is the 100th anniversary of his death. As such, we would like to invite local residents to visit Chatham, remember Fred Upson and pay our respects. The Drill Hall are organising a special event (including a naval band). There will also be time to look around, there are cafes and museums, and we will finish with a simple Act of Remembrance at Fred’s grave. All our local community are invited to join us to attend the ceremony, all ages are welcome. The coach will be leaving Kesgrave (from Ropes Drive War Memorial) at 8am and returning to Kesgrave at 4.45pm. The cost of the trip is a heavily subsidised £5 per adult and £2 per child. Booking forms are available from and can be returned to Kesgrave Bell, the town council offices or 2nd Stop Shop. If you have any queries please phone Reverend Robin on 623388.
