A WORD FROM THE EDITOR The game has just ended! I’m utterly devastated but have spent the last hour trying (unconvincingly) to persuade my eight-year-old son it’s not the end of the world. It’s all falling on deaf ears just now, but hopefully not for long. We will pick ourselves up and we will come back, and next time we will have experience on our side. Well done boys. Football might not be coming home today, but you will be given a heroes’ welcome when you do. As a Galway girl I have experienced a similar degree of disappointment more times than I wish to acknowledge. So much of the summer (every summer) in Ireland revolves around GAA fixtures and it’s impossible not to get caught up in the excitement. We grow up playing hurling and camogie and the rivalry is intense, especially at club level. Every game is analysed and every move dissected ad infinitum until the next game. Then it starts all over again. Sport can be cruel, but when it’s joyful, there really is nothing quite like it. When you support a team, you become a member of an extensive community. Even though I’m 500 miles from home I feel proud when I fly the Galway flag. That sense of heritage, that wonderful belonging, will stay with me forever. I shall forever be a Galway girl.
NEWS BEFRIENDING FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN KESGRAVE AND RUSHMERE ST ANDREW One in 10 people aged over 65 in Suffolk say they are often or always lonely. Age UK Suffolk runs a befriending service to help alleviate this problem. Telephone befriending is available for older people across Suffolk, but with funding from Councillor Robert Whiting, a visiting befriending service has just been started for clients in Kesgrave and Rushmere St Andrew. Visiting befriender visits the client’s home every week for an hour or so for a friendly chat and also acts as a link to help the client access Age UK Suffolk’s services if required. Our befrienders and clients both agree that the service is invaluable – having a befriender, a visiting or a telephone one, makes such a difference in an older person’s life, and although it might seem awkward in the beginning, like in any relationship, after a while volunteers and clients are usually chatting like old friends! Clients really look forward to the time with their volunteer; this is, after all, someone whose sole purpose is to have a chat with the client to brighten up their day. No rush, no agenda, just talking about anything interesting.
Of course I’m now also a Suffolk girl and I’ve been as caught up in the excitement of the World Cup as everyone else. Even if you’re not a footy fan, I hope you have engaged with the World Cup in some small way and that the feel-good factor stays with you for a long time. I also hope it inspires you to appreciate the value of shared experience and to seek out opportunities to spend time with others without the expense of a long-haul flight.
If you or someone you care for would benefit from this free service, or if you would like to become a befriending volunteer, please contact Becky, our befriending coordinator: 01473 353061 / befriending@ageuksuffolk.org
Whether you choose a sporting activity (either as participant or spectator), a coffee morning, a walk or a talk, there are opportunities aplenty in your local community and I hope In Touch motivates you reach out and grab the ball with both hands.

NEWS LOCAL LAW FIRM COMMITS TO SUPPORT SUFFOLK LAW CENTRE Ipswich law firm Prettys has donated £1,000 to Suffolk Law Centre to support the charity’s ongoing work in the community. Suffolk Law Centre provides a vital service for the diverse community in Suffolk to ensure they are aware of their legal rights and have the right support to access legal services that may be available to them. Prettys has been a long-term supporter of Suffolk Law Centre (formerly Suffolk Law Advice Centre, part of Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality), with solicitors and trainee solicitors from across the firm regularly providing pro bono advice at the legal advice drop in sessions held at Suffolk Law Centre’s Ipswich office. Peter Blake (pictured fourth from left), a partner at Prettys, commented: “We are delighted to support Suffolk Law Centre and the important work they do. We believe that everyone has a right to access legal services and the team at Suffolk Law Centre provide a valuable service to make sure people within the local community can get the help they need.” Audrey Ludwig, Legal Director, Suffolk Law Centre said: “We have had great support from Prettys’ staff with our free legal services for many years, so this excellent donation reinforces their shared commitment to access justice for all in Suffolk.” Following the donation, Prettys is now a founding member of Suffolk Law Centre. Suffolk Law Centre officially opened its doors on St Matthew’s Street in March 2018. During the initial stages the team will be working towards their vision to empower people in Suffolk to understand and assert their legal rights. The centre is looking to develop ways to make its legal advice services more accessible to more people. For more information about Prettys, please visit: www.prettys.co.uk If you would like to support the work of Suffolk Law Centre, you can donate at: https://mydonate.bt.com/events/suffolklawcentre To discuss other ways to support the charity, please contact Business Development Officer Sue Wardell: suew@iscre.org.uk
BUS NOTES I have been pleased to observe the increasing number of people travelling on our local Kesgrave bus 68 to both the hospital and central Ipswich – but there have been some journeys which were poorly used. First Buses are, in common with the rest of the bus industry, losing custom at an alarming rate, and consequently are forever looking to make economies. On the plus side, the 68 is very reliable, with friendly drivers who invariably keep to time. The present 68 was introduced last year on the strength of a case made by our local council. It is clear that it makes use of a bus primarily used for journeys to and from school, which might otherwise be sitting idly in the garage: hence the somewhat limited service of five trips each way. But these few trips are vital for reaching into the hospital grounds and the centre, making shopping and visits possible to both for much of the working day. It is thus vital to Kesgrave residents that it continues to be available, particularly in view of our ageing local population, and I do encourage that we all use this route as much as possible to help ensure its continued existence. Happy Wanderer

RUSHMERE ST ANDREW PARISH COUNCIL SUMMER FUN! A reminder of the local facilities in Rushmere St Andrew to keep you and your families entertained this summer. We have the play areas at Tower Hall, Broke Hall, Kelvedon Drive, Yew Tree Grove and Chestnut Close. Rushmere Heath is always a joy to visit and perhaps try or revisit the Mill Stream and/or Sandlings Local Nature Reserves. The Jubilee Walk is approximately two miles and is located to the south side of Rushmere St Andrew and encircles most of the Bixley Farm Estate. Access is possible from a number of places on the walk, so it is possible to walk short sections at a time if so wished. All maps for the Jubilee Walk and Mill Stream and Sandlings Nature Reserves can be downloaded from: www.rushmerestandrew.onesuffolk.net/ information/health-and-leisure The Battle’s Over Beacon Lighting Community Event Centenary of the ending of the First World War November11, 5-7pm at Ipswich School Sports Centre, The Street, Rushmere St Andrew IP5 1DE Free tickets are still available for this event but are proving to be very popular and going fast. If you require tickets and live in the parish of Rushmere St Andrew please contact the parish office by email or phone with your contact details and how many tickets you require. It is advisable to do so as soon as possible as tickets are limited. Something for everyone to enjoy: • Food and drink – hog roast, candy floss, teas, coffees, hot chocolate and the Sports Centre bar • Children’s crafts • Local school displays • History exhibitions • The Orwell Singers who will also be leading a First World War sing-a-long • The lighting of the Beacon by local school children and a festival of lights • Commemoration lead by Rev Heather Marsden of Rushmere Baptist Please contact the assistant parish clerk about helping at the Beacon event or for tickets. Contact: sarah.jenkins@rushmere-st-andrew.org.uk / 01473 711509 COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH – Thinking of volunteering! The Community Speed Watch (CSW) team is a group of volunteers who are trained to use a radar gun. When they commence a roadside check the radar gun is set to check any speed although, following strict police guidelines, they only record vehicles travelling at 35mph or more. All the checks are conducted in 30mph zones and the locations (of which there are 13 in Rushmere St Andrew) are all ratified by the Police High Speed Road Team. Once they identify a vehicle travelling at excess speed the details are forwarded to the police who then send an ‘advisory warning’ letter to the registered keeper of the vehicle. Repeat ‘offenders’ are likely to receive a visit from the police. The team are hoping to roll out sessions for the spring and summer across the parish. So, look out for them. They are well aware that nobody likes to get ‘caught’. The police are continually criticised for carrying out their speed checks. In order to keep things ‘fair’ on the motorist, planned speed checks are advertised. With that in mind as we develop the parish website there will be a section included on Speedwatch with details of where and when they are likely to take place in the area. If you would like to join our band of volunteers helping to keep our roads safe (full training will be given) please contact in the first instance, the parish clerk, Sylvia Stannard: sylvia.stannard@rushmere-st-andrew.org.uk / 01473 711509 It would be a really good day for our Speedwatch team if they conducted a roadside check for one hour and did not record any vehicle travelling at excess speed. That’s the measure of success – not how many can they ‘catch’!

NEWS KESGRAVE TOWN COUNCIL Overgrown Trees & Hedges The town council has received many complaints from local residents about overgrown trees, hedges and shrubbery. You may not have realised how quickly your garden is growing. If you take a walk alongside your driveway or fence boundary, then you may not be aware that pedestrians cannot access the footway or if your house is on a corner, that your overgrown hedge is blocking a visibility splay and is dangerous. Many thanks in advance for being a good neighbour in Kesgrave. New play area at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre By the time you read this the new play area at KWMCC should be open! Kesgrave Town Council and KWMCC have worked in partnership and with funding from SPARK, to install this play area to help with the deficiency of play in this part of town. The equipment is for children aged 11 and under. We hope you enjoy this new facility. Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage in Kesgrave With the summer months here, the town has unfortunately had an increase in anti-social behaviour. Feedback from some local residents and Suffolk Constabulary is that this appears to have been committed by young people. Of course, the town council does not want to accuse all youngsters of anti-social behaviour as this is certainly not the case, but 90 per cent of the anti-social behaviour has been committed by youths. This is not just a matter for the town council, although your council tax is being spent on repairing and replacing some of the equipment which has been vandalised and repairing metal fences which could fall on and kill a young child, equally fixing vandalised new play equipment in case somebody gets hurt or a fatality occurs, but it is also a police matter and a matter for families, parents and the community. If you are a parent, do you know where your children are right now? Are they vandalising equipment as detailed above? Are they taking or smoking drugs? Are they having under-age sex, smoking and drinking alcohol in public places? Are they breaking large quantities of glass and scattering it in public places around the town, on public cycle and footways and in play areas? These young people could find themselves in the police system and could end up getting a criminal record which affects them later on in life. With a drug conviction, a lot of travel becomes unavailable as many countries, including America, who will not allow anyone in their country who has a drug conviction. Now that the days are longer and the weather is warmer we have noticed an increase in people/youths using our public open spaces in the town, which is great. However, this is a good time for parents to ask their children to be responsible and sensible during the evenings and forthcoming summer holidays. The town council works closely with Suffolk Constabulary and the police have advised that they will be taking a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and bad behaviour, including using or supplying of illegal substances/drugs. The police will be taking action against those who chose to diminish the quality of life of other residents in our lovely town. Anybody over the age of 10 years can be prosecuted. The police would like residents to contact them immediately if any crime is identified on the said day and not leave it until the next day. Some police officers in the town will be wearing video cameras to record anything of any evidential value. The officers will also be using unmarked police vehicles. The town council in partnership with the police are sending out a plea to parents; please be mindful of where your children are and what they are getting up to. Our town, play areas and open spaces are to be used and enjoyed by all our residents and visitors and Kesgrave should continue to be a safe and fun place for everybody. As parents, are you aware of any alcoholic drinks being taken from your home? Underage drinking is a real issue, together with smashing glass bottles in public areas after the alcohol has been consumed. Young people who are
6
not accustomed to alcohol can suffer alcohol poisoning; a very dangerous situation to be in. Drawing up Ward boundaries for May 2019 A consultation on draft recommendations for ward boundaries in East Suffolk has begun. The consultation ends on August 27. This consultation is being led by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England.: http://www.lgbce.org.uk If you would like to email your own views to the town council, then we would be very interested to receive your thoughts and observations which can be collated with any further responses from the town council regarding Kesgrave and suggested ward boundaries. Senior Citizen’s Outing: Tuesday, August 21 Booking forms are available from the town council office, 2nd Stop Shop and the library for this years’ outing. Come along and enjoy either fish or sausage and chips at The Hut in Felixstowe. There is one pick up point at the Millennium Jubilee Hall. The coach departs at 11am and will return at approximately 4pm. NEW ARGENTINE TANGO OPPORTUNITIES Tango Innominado, a local ensemble which meets to learn and perform tango music, is looking for instrumentalists and vocal soloists to join them. Their leader, David Faulkner invites any interested musicians to make contact (01473 625482), and in particular he would like to hear from accordion or bandoneon players who would like to learn more about Argentine tango music. The group perform at social dances for tango dancers in Suffolk. In addition, David says that there is also the chance for anyone to start learning to dance Argentine Tango with Suffolk Tango, a not-for-profit group run by volunteers. Starting on Monday, September 17, Richard and Mandy from Suffolk Tango are offering a new course to learn the elegant, evocative social dance of Argentine Tango on Mondays. The 10-week course (in two five-week blocks) aims to provide a solid foundation in the key elements of Argentine Tango in an enjoyable sociable environment. It concentrates on how to lead and follow the fundamental steps of Tango. The dance is improvised to the music so there are no long sequences to learn. Richard says that our current dancers are of all ages, some coming with a background of ballroom, salsa or modern jive, but many have never attended dance classes before. Once you try Argentine Tango you will soon get hooked and an exciting range of dancing opportunities near and far opens up. After this course you will be able to progress into our structured courses for improvers and intermediates. Prior booking is essential, but there is no need to book with a partner as we aim to match follower and leader numbers. However, it is better to come together with a partner if you can. What is more, we always rotate partners during the class to speed the learning process and to make the evening more fun. The course is held at the Richards Room at Martlesham Community Centre (behind Tescos) from 7.30-10pm on Mondays from September 17. You can apply via the online form at www.suffolktango.org.uk, or contact: Mandy@suffolktango.org.uk / 07766 694618

YOUR LOCAL COUNTRY MARKET Meet bakers and makers, sewers and growers, painters, jewellery-makers, wood turners and whittlers: we’re all at your local Country Market every Tuesday morning. What a whole heap of talent is on our doorstep – you only need to step out to find out for yourself. Did you know that research on spending by local authorities in the UK shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized businesses, 63p stays in the local economy, compared to 40p spent with a larger business*. Spending your money on genuinely locally grown, sewn, baked and made food and produce benefits our local community. It also relieves our roads of freight traffic and our air of pollution; because food is fresher, it needs less packaging, it contains more nutrients and it’s better for you. Many people seek out local honey because they believe it to relieve their symptoms of hayfever. Locally grown plants are already accustomed to the soil and climate in your neighbourhood – and their grower is on hand to offer planting and caring advice, should you wish to ask. Where can you get that extra special gift or treat? Have a bowl made from a branch from a favourite tree; commission a picture of your pet; enjoy glutenfree cake and delicious jams and preserves made from locally grown fruits; buy a card picturing a favourite local scene. So not only can you enjoy eating, growing, using or giving something nice you’ve bought from the Martlesham Heath Country Market, you can also feel a warm glow of having contributed to the success of the local economy. Remember, there’s plenty to see every Tuesday morning from 9-11.15am in Martlesham Heath Pavilion. Enjoy a cuppa after some gentle browsing. *Source: The Guardian

KESGRAVE WI June was a very busy month for Kesgrave WI. Our refreshment stall at Kesgrave Fun Day on Saturday, June 9 was very successful. Members are about to decide which charities should benefit from our profits. We celebrated Suffolk Day on Thursday, June 21 with our annual visit to The Hut at Felixstowe to enjoy the beautiful sunshine, a paddle or a swim and a fish and chip lunch. We returned home after afternoon tea. Deben Group 2 (Levington, Nacton, Bucklesham, Martlesham and Kesgrave) group meeting was held on Tuesday, June 26 at Kesgrave Community Centre. Local WIs meet for a social evening with a speaker. This year Kesgrave hosted and had booked Iestyn Edwards, a ‘male’ ballerina who has entertained the troupes in Afghanistan and Iraq with his Madam Galena act. It was a hilarious evening enjoyed by all. See My Tutu Went AWOL on the internet for more information – well worth a look! At our July meeting we welcomed Mike Garland from East Suffolk Morris Men. What a lovely evening! Mike very amusingly recalled the history of Morris Dancing interspersed with very active demonstrations of the various types of dancing from past times and around the country. After Mike had judged the monthly competition – A Morris Stick – won by Monica Collins with Angela Finch second, and Yvonne Mills third, we continued the evening with our business items including preparations for our annual garden meeting in August. Our next meeting is our garden meeting on Thursday, August 2. If you require any information please call the secretary, Di Chilver: 01473 611415

KESGRAVE CO-OP WOMEN’S GUILD On Tuesday June 12, we held our annual quiz night, a chance to meet some of our friends from Felixstowe Guild who joined in with our members to answer question on the usual subjects of cheese and wine, the musicals, the human body, etc. There was a picture round on Suffolk places which nearly everyone managed to get right. A question which stumped everyone was ‘How does Double Gloucester Cheese differ from Single Gloucester?’ There are several possible answers to this, but the one we had was because it’s twice as big! On Tuesday June 26, Barbara Faulkner transported us to Ascot Races on Ladies Day. She gave the history of Ascot, which was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, costing £600 to build. Many millions of pounds have been spent over the last 200 years and it is now one of the most renowned racecourses in the world. The Gold Cup is the most important race and was established in 1807. Ladies Day is a misnomer which came about on Gild Cup day. The wealthiest gentlemen attended with their ladies who tried to outdo each other with elaborate hats and dresses and the media gave the name Ladies Day to the event. Some of our members had also worn elaborate hats and ‘posh frocks’ for the evening and during the talk we were able to race beautiful little toy horses by throwing a dice to decide their progress. Everyone agreed it had been an enlightening and very entertaining evening. Felixstowe was our destination on Friday, June 11, and you can see from the photo of members anxiously waiting for their fish and chips that everyone had a great day. The weather was very kind and The Hut is an excellent venue as it is positioned on the promenade and next to the lovely Spa gardens. The Guild takes a summer break in August so our next meetings are in September. Tuesday, September 4: A Year in the Wildlife of Suffolk Heritage Coast is our talk by Alex Bass, a wildlife tour guide and speaker based in Saxmundham. He runs a range of birds and butterfly tours along the beautiful Suffolk Heritage Coast and tutors in bird identification by sight, song and call and ID of butterflies. Last year we had a wonderful talk about RSPB Minsmere, this talk will have a wider range. Tuesday, September 18: Colin Hopper talks about the world of optical illusion, Optical illusions occur when the brain misinterprets what is actually visible to the eye. Knowledge and memory give us an expectation, and then logic is applied, but sometimes the brain assumes the wrong thing. This promises to be a fascinating talk. Tuesday, October 2: David Webb an actor known for Hi-de-Hi!, You Rang, M’Lord? and The Dick Emery Show, will talk about his life on TV. He now lives locally and has been a presenter on BBC Radio Suffolk,
IPSWICH & DISTRICT SOROPTIMIST CLUB What’s the connection between the World Cup and orphaned children in Zimbabwe? When we booked our stall at Sproughton Village Fete to raise money for the Palandaba Orphans’ Project we hadn’t foreseen the huge national significance of June 24. It was a lovely afternoon, the people who did come were interested in hearing about the inspiring project, but we had hoped to raise the school fees for at least one more child. The best laid plans of mice and women! Our June club meeting went well. Our speaker gave us a fascinating insight into the Ipswich scene at night and the huge variety of people that the Town Pastors support, listen to, help out and befriend in their quiet, nonjudgemental way. We were impressed and grateful. After that we had work to do. We voted on nominations for leadership roles in our federation, including candidates from the other side of the world. Soroptimism is expanding rapidly in developing countries and powerful women are emerging. We then voted to move to charitable status and had a quick look at draft resolutions for our autumn conference. Some members are really interested in these matters and have taken on some of the leadership roles themselves. Others are not keen to spend too much time on them. Still we are an independently minded lot of women, we would not put up with having decisions made at the top. Running a bottom up system, where the individual member and the local club have a voice, is not easy but we mostly get it right. The whole focus of Soroptimism is on action to improve the lives of women and girls. The ‘business’ is only there to make this possible. We are looking forward to August, a fun month with some days out and meals together.
ORWELL DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY We are now taking our usual summer break, but why not join us when our new season starts on Wednesday, September 5, when Rosalind Whyte will be giving a talk entitled 250 Years of the Royal Academy. In 2018, The Royal Academy of Arts celebrates its 250th anniversary. We will look at the position of artists in London before and after the formation of the academy in 1768 and some of the characters involved, including the first president, Sir Joshua Reynolds. Like any important institution, the academy has been embroiled in intrigue and controversy over the course if its history and no scandal or outrage will remain unexposed! We shall be holding our second informal study day at Rushmere Village Hall on Friday, September 7, when the subject will be Feisty Ladies – Women Travellers from Victorian Britain. Roger Mitchell, the speaker who made last year’s study day so memorable, will once again be entertaining us with a fascinating look at those intrepid women from days gone by.
Meetings start at 7.30pm in Kesgrave Community centre. Further details from Gloria Everett: 01473 614991
We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Talks last about an hour, commencing at 2.15pm, with tea and coffee served from 1.30-2pm. Reading back over previous articles it sees unbelievable that in the April article we were still getting sub zero winds and desperate to see some sunshine – and yet now we’ve had so much sun that we’re getting desperate to see some rain! The incredibly hot conditions in recent weeks mean the ground is baked hard – making it very difficult to dig and, of course, also making it hard for plants to thrive unless well watered. So the over-riding message for August is to keep on watering (and in case you’re wondering, my tortoise is loving the hot weather but even she has to be ‘watered’ by having a shallow bath every few days to enable her to drink and absorb water through her skin) At our allotment site in Playford Lane there’s a real sense of community and gardeners will often look out for each other’s plots and water them when people are away on hols or unable to get to their plot. We also have an annual social get together at the site in early September when we all bring lunches and picnics and generally chat and share tips and also vote for ‘best plot’, ‘most improved plot’, etc. So, some tips for August. Pinch out tomato plant tops and feed them, feed sweetcorn, pick French and runner beans and dig up carrots, dig up strawberry runners and pot them up for next year, start lifting onions at the end of the month (they’re ready when their stalks start to bend over – they need to be dried before storing), lift potatoes, carry out repeat sowings for lettuce and radishes, start pruning apple and pear trees towards the end of the month and finally, ensure fruit trees for stoned fruit (such as peach, apricot, plum and cherry) are pruned before the end of the month. As I said, we’re a friendly bunch so why not come and join us or ask to have a look around the site and see if you fancy having a go? You don’t have to take on a whole plot – we have half and quarter plots too. Contact our membership secretary, Angela Brown: 01473 612283 / membership@kesgrave-allotments.org.uk Sally Peckham

OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP Firstly, thank you to everyone who attended the litter pick on May 27 – the woods have never looked so tidy! by S Corley
Secondly, our annual Glow Worm Survey and Bat Walk on June 29 received a good number of keen spotters, despite the fact that it had been cancelled a few days before! Thirteen glow worms were recorded in all, this being significantly more than the seven seen last year. Our volunteers have been focussed on laying bark chippings on paths throughout the woods over the past two months. Because the chippings will likely have rotted by autumn, we’d really appreciate any help in distributing them beforehand at one of our volunteer work mornings or as a team building exercise (contacts below.) And finally, Nature Explorers have been a bit thin on the ground recently due to the exam period, but fortunately we had one arrive to learn about wheelbarrow maintenance on May 19. DATES FOR THE DIARY Saturday, September 15, 10am-noon: Volunteer Work Morning (all ages) Meet at the Education Area. Tools, training and light refreshments provided. No need to book. Saturday, September 15, 9-11am: Nature Explorers (11-18 year olds) Please book a place via our email below. Nature Watch Club (ages five-11): 2018 dates to be confirmed New volunteers of all ages and abilities are always welcome. No experience needed. HEATH SCHOOL NURSERY AND RECEPTION Have you considered the benefits for your child of starting their education in a school based Nursery unit? Heath School Nursery is bright and cheerful, with lots of activities for your child to enjoy, whether it’s playing in the sand or water, painting, being a vet or a shopkeeper, visiting ‘The Jungle’, or sitting quietly to enjoy a book. There is also an extensive play area outside. As well as all the child initiated play-based learning, children will have access to daily phonics and maths sessions, which are always taught in a fun and engaging way. This gives the children a wonderful start to their school life. As well as being taught by a trained, highly skilled, teacher who is well supported by experienced Early Years trained staff, your child will have the benefit of getting to grips with school routines, such as getting into and out of PE kit, travelling around the school for different activities, and generally getting used to school life. Whether or not your child is able to attend our Nursery, our Reception Classes are equally well regarded. We have first rate facilities, including a wellresourced separate Early Years outdoor area. The curriculum is stimulating, with an emphasis on outdoor learning (including Forest Schools), as well as providing a firm foundation in basic skills. We have a limited number of spaces available for entry to Reception in September 2018. For those who require childcare outside these sessions, our popular before and after school club, Jigsaw, is available. There are also a number of reputable childminders in our area. For more information, or to obtain an application form, please contact the school office: 01473 622806. Co-Head Teachers Sue Bowditch and David Whatley
THE SAPLINGS What an absolutely fabulous summer term; we have loved every minute of the sunshine and used our lovely outside area making shades from parachutes to ensure we could stay safe in the sun. This term we have been getting ‘school ready’ with our Rising fives group practising all the skills they need to go to school. They have had practise PE lessons and the biggest challenge to a four-yearold, finding where you threw your other sock when you took it off. We extended our handwriting skills, phonic knowledge and number skills. We have loved hearing the children stories as they have started visiting their schools. We are ending the term with a red carpet VIP graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievements. We enjoyed a special Goldilocks and the Thee Bears day, investigating sizes, numbers, sequences and good manners and friendships. We also celebrated Peppa Pig Muddy Puddle Day, raising money for Save the Children and we are looking forward to being stallholders at Martlesham Fete. The babies have been busy with their sensory baskets and exploring the outside area. We welcome you to come and have a look around our fabulous nursery which is open 51 weeks a year from 7.30am-6pm. We offer a 10 per cent discount to emergency service staff and Martlesham Industrial Estate employees. To book a visit contact: news@thesaplings.org.uk / 01473 614753

AUTUMN DATES AT BRIGHT STARS
So, as I’m writing this, we are looking forward to holding our summer fair and getting ready to say good-bye to our children who are leaving us to go to Reception. To support the children with their transition, we have been implementing a school timetable for maths and English, we have lots of uniforms and information books from the different schools, and we have invited teachers from the various schools to visit the children to coincide with the children visiting their new schools. We have some spaces from September, so please feel free to contact us or pop in for a chat with our friendly Early Years team, where we have two qualified teachers and all other staff are CACHE qualified level 3/4. We wish all our children and families a great summer break. Our topic when we return on Monday, September 10 will be All About Me!. We are an Ofsted registered childcare provider for children from the age of two years onwards. As we are registered as ‘Good’, we can provide funded places for two-year-old children who have received ‘Golden Tickets’ from Suffolk County Council. MARTLESHAM & KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOLS A huge thank you to everyone who supported us at our Fun Day on June 30 – fundraisers, stallholders, staff and attendees. Thank you also to our sponsors – Haart, Gilbert Heating & Plumbing, and Bates, Wells, Braithwaite Solicitors. We made a profit of £888! We shall be spending this on new resources for both our playschools. At Kesgrave Playschool the children have been supported in creating lots of plans, offering opportunities for critical thinking, speaking and listening, and knowledge and understanding of the world. We have been voting for our favourite stories, snack menu and making decisions about the things we would like to learn about. In preparation for school transitions, we enjoyed creating our very own school dinner, and loved having visits from the children’s new teachers. We wish our biggest children the very best of luck at their new big schools. If you’re looking for a playschool for September, we have spaces available. We are a small playschool nurturing outdoor learning experiences, next to the woods and overlooking the fields, a peaceful spot to enjoy. Call us on 07746 907060 to arrange a visit or visit: www.mandkplayschools.co.uk At Martlesham Playschool the children have been to Hollow Trees Farm for their summer trip. They had lots of fun in the sun, feeding and stroking the animals, finding out about the animals and wildlife. We wish all our school leavers the best for the future, you will all be missed. Thank you for having lots of fun with us. We are offering themed weeks throughout our summer holiday club, including a jungle week and a space week with lots of fun filled activities for the children to enjoy. SPORT KESGRAVE BOWLS CLUB The season is now in the second half and the weather has been great for all bowlers, not so good for the greens though. We had our open charity pairs tournament on June 9 and as other years it was a huge success. The tournament was won by D Johnson and his partner and second place went to M Alam and his partner. We raised £500 and this was presented to St Elizabeth Hospice, as shown on the cover. KWMCC have let the pavilion and bowls green to Activlives, a charitable organisation, and hopefully the bowls club will support them where possible. They are using the facilities on Tuesday mornings from 10.30am-12.30pm. The teams are doing well in the league so hopefully that will continue, but most importantly, everyone enjoys their bowls. We still have some blocks available for our Open Triples tournament on August 26 and also our Open Pairs tournament on September 8. If anyone requires a form, they can contact me or Muriel and they will be made most welcome. Tony and Sally are still organising the club games and Saturday drives; hopefully members will support them and come along. Details are in the fixture list. If there is anyone who would like to try the game, they would also be made most welcome on these days. Details of the drives can be found on the club noticeboard, or again they can contact me. Let’s hope the weather keeps good for all bowlers, but I guess that’s being a bit too optimistic. Joyce Fisher: 01473 626075
KESGRAVE CRICKET CLUB Our new nets were officially opened on July 1 and ex-Essex and England cricketer Graham Napier kindly did the honours for us and also ran a Q&A session afterwards which was well received. Following the opening ceremony an interclub T20 match and BBQ took place to celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary which was enjoyed by all. The club raised £40,000 over the past three years and we would like to thank SPARK, local councillors Debbie McCullum, Sue Mower, Stuart Lawson, Geoff Lynch, Deborah Dean and Mark Newton, Suffolk Coastal’s Outdoor Playing Space Fund managed by Sarah Shinnie, Kesgrave Town Council, Textron, John Fenton and Sport England along with a generous donation from an individual who wished to remain anonymous. Both teams have continued their success and remain at the top of both their respective leagues. Notable batting achievements last month include: Ben Colver (49) and Matt Oliver (44) v Bury St. Edmunds; Ryan Hoyle (93 no), Sam Dixey (75) and Shashank Bezgoan (53) against Felixstowe; Sam Dixey (42) v Ipswich; Ben Colver (128), Mike Worne (90) and Matt Oliver (44) v Easton; Ben Garnham (54), Nathan Young (50 no) and Danny McCall (47) v Tuddenham; Nathan Young (103 no) and Mike Worne (62) v Long Melford; Sam Dixey (106) and Andy Trevor (36) v Ipswich. Notable bowling performance include: Mike Worne (3-29) v Bury St. Edmunds; Sam Godward (5-16) v Felixstowe; Sam Godward (3-23) v Ipswich; Sam Colver (4-23) and Shah Jahangir (3-37) v Easton and Sanjay Patel (3-23) v Long Melford. Our junior teams continue to perform well and enjoy their matches against other local teams with some great improvements and good wins witnessed. CHURCH NEWS ALL SAINTS CHURCH Hope is something we all want and need. What, then, do we mean by hope? The dictionary says ‘to want something to happen or be the case’. For Christians it is an anticipation and expectation that comes from our belief that through Jesus we have a better, brighter future not only now but the ultimate optimism of a life that goes beyond today. It is like having a safety net that underpins life in which we do not merely exist but have life and have it in abundance. We know that we can put our whole trust and reliance in someone who knows our suffering but came through it to help and save us. It is more than a desire, but a faith that is outside our normal, everyday thinking, beyond what we see with our mortal, worldly senses to a place where love, grace and mercy are absolutely supreme. There is such a joy and peace of mind that comes from this hope that we have. As it says in Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future” – so we can have total confidence in God’s complete, undeniable and unconditional love towards us. Join us on Sunday mornings at 11.30am (Café and Children’s Church 10.30am) at The Ark Church, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR. Declaring God’s Way - Sharing His Love As I write this we are still experiencing two weeks of very hot weather. It can be a difficult time for some to enjoy such unusual weather. Elderly and sick people will have been finding it difficult to cope with at times. I have been watching some of the football matches (hoping for England to reach the semifinal stage). It is so fascinating to watch the teams working together so well. I am amazed at the skill as the ball is passed from one to another, and mostly someone there to receive it to continue on towards the goal. The tennis matches are so interesting to watch too. They all hope to win the prize at the end of the game. Life is very much like that. We as Christians are always ready to receive the love of God and to pass it on to others. Of course, by the time you are reading this, we will all know the results and hopefully be able to rejoice or commiserate with the teams. At Rushmere Baptist Church we are preparing for our Children’s Holiday Club which takes place from Monday, July 29 until Friday, August 3. We have a good number of children booked for this event, and we pray that they will have a good time together as they have fun and learn about the love of Jesus. Our usual activities are set out below. Sunday 10.45am: Morning Worship with a crèche for the very young, Friends of God (FOG) for age three to School Year 2, Mustard Seeds for School Years 3-6 and The Tribe for School Years 7 and above. 6.30pm: Evening Worship (traditional style service once a month) Monday 6.15-7.30pm: FFaF (Youth Group for School Years 3-6) Wednesday 2.30pm: Senior Citizens’ Friendship Hour on the second Wednesday Thursday 12.30pm: Luncheon Club Friday 6.30-8pm: Prayer Meeting Saturday 10.30am-noon: Meeting Point Coffee Morning on the fourth Saturday of each month For more information visit: www.rushmerebaptist.org.uk Minister: The Rev Heather Marsden Minister-in-Training: Hazel Hunting Secretary: Mrs Jean Cutting Church Telephone Number: 01473 721455

Pray for yourself and let others pray for you. The Apostle Paul wrote: “The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phillipians 4: 6-7. If you feel stuck with your own prayers or you feel the need for support, it may well be God’s will that several people support you in prayer. We believe that God always listens to and answers our prayers and we are continually amazed by the many different ways that He does answer. The prayer team at All Saints would like you to know that we are always there for you and that we would love to pray for you or to pray with you at times of need, so please do not hesitate to ask. You can ask for prayer support from our prayer chain, or your prayer can be included at our Wednesday Morning Prayer Service, or instead you can meet with a listening ear after the Sunday 10am service and pray together for anything that is troubling you. To make prayer support as easy as possible to ask for, there are several different ways to make contact. These are all covered on our prayer board by the chapel, including by phone, by email, by writing in the prayer book, by posting a prayer request in the prayer box, or by talking to one of the prayer team at a service. Prayer requests can be named or anonymous, or they can be open or confidential. Call John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or Sybil Holbrook on 07428 001819, or send your query to: ask.prayerchain@gmail.com AT ALL SAINTS Our basic pattern is that every Sunday we have services at 8.30am (BCP Communion), 10am (Modern yet traditional service with All-Age alternative) and 6.30pm (Evensong). There isn’t enough space to mention our myriad of tweaks and alternatives, but please visit www.askegrave.org. uk or email Charlotte to receive our fortnightly notices: cha.markham@btinternet.com
BIXLEY FARM CHURCH AT TOWER HALL: SUNDAY@4 The hot summer seems endless as this goes to press and with the sport there is an additional feel-good factor. And then there are the long holidays! We seem surrounded by images of fun and happiness and we are told to consume it all; even if our own personal circumstances and daily struggles don’t just melt away. A prolonged heatwave also has its downsides. The Bible certainly encourages us to find pleasure and enjoy our “life under the sun”, but also reminds us there is “a time and season for everything” and that a life without a Godly purpose is just “chasing after the wind” and leads to utter despair in the end. So have an enjoyable summer and may God bless your holidays. Our parent and toddler group, Little Lambs, has had a great first term. These sessions run from 9.15-11am every Friday during term time at Tower Hall for a nominal £1 per family. Those who have come along have commented on the warm welcome they have received and that the children have enjoyed being there. Thank you to all who have supported us and we look forward to seeing you all after the summer break on Friday, September 7. If you would like any other details please contact Emma Allinson: families@mie.org.uk In addition to our Sunday services and parent and toddler group we also have a regular midweek homegroup in Foxwood Crescent and meet for prayer at Tower Hall on the first Thursday of the month at 7pm and again at 8pm. If you have anything or anyone you wish to pray for we are there for you. You just need to turn up or call us using the number below. As always, everyone is welcome to join us each Sunday for our regular weekly service at Tower Hall from 4-5pm. There are opportunities to speak to clergy or other members of the church, time for personal prayer and Holy Communion is celebrated every other Sunday. Bixley Farm Church (CofE) was initiated by St John’s, Cauldwell Hall Road and St Andrew’s, Britannia Road (collectively called Mission Ipswich East).
