A WORD FROM THE EDITOR At the end of my weekly yoga class we spend about 15 minutes unwinding (sometimes literally). It’s meant as time to relax but this week I found myself imagining what I would say if my son had been caught up in one of the recent terrorist attacks. I tried in vain to dismiss the thought but silent tears were quickly sliding into my ears as I lay there counting down the minutes. There simply are no words. How does one cope with grief such as this while also dealing with the fact that your child’s life has been taken from them? All their hopes and their potential wiped out, all that energy and excitement and fun and love stolen from the world forever. Ironically, in the background my yoga instructor was speaking about being a positive influence in the world and the following words struck me: a positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, actions and outcomes. In the context of recent events this seems more than a little frivolous, but in coming together to share a minute’s silence, or at an event such as One Love Manchester, isn’t that exactly what we are doing. When we come together to share our grief we find comfort in others and strength to carry on, and now more than ever we need to look out for each other. We’re told our behaviour as adults has a direct impact on how our children behave. Is it possible that our behaviour can have a positive influence on the adults we interact with too? Is compassion contagious? Does the kindness of another change how we behave? If we have it within us to influence the behaviour of others we have power and we can use this power to affect positive change. A kindness shown to a stranger today might change how they behave tomorrow, and so it goes. It’s a tiny ripple in what appears to be a rather deep, dark ocean but together we are stronger.

NEWS 2017 TENDRING SHOW: FARMING FOR LIFE Almost 20,000 people are expected to attend the 102nd annual Tendring Hundred Show on Saturday, July 8. The 2017 president for Essex’s premier agricultural and family show is local St Osyth farmer Roger Lord. Roger has been a strong supporter of the show for many years and was fundamental in helping establish the popular theme area. This year’s theme is Farming for Life where we will show how farmers use the countryside to grow healthy foods. The Tendring Hundred Show was first held in 1899 and has become an important event in the local calendar and a unique opportunity to bring the rural and urban populations of North Essex and the surrounding area together. A family show, it maintains its strong agricultural heritage with large displays of agricultural machinery and livestock. In last year’s post show survey, over a third of visitors said that the animals and machinery were what they enjoyed the most at the show. Johnnie Jiggins, chairman of the Tendring Hundred Farmers’ Club, said: “We have been working hard to prepare for this year’s Tendring Show and I am confident it will be another great day out. As a non-profit organisation we rely on and hugely appreciate the support of a dedicated team of local volunteers and the local community that come through the gates on the day. There is a lot to look forward to.” For full details and to purchase reduced rate tickets visit: www.tendringshow.co.uk

DEFIBRILLATOR AT HALL FARM Stratford St Mary has a new Public Community Access Defibrillator sited at Hall Farm. This has been achieved by the kind donation from the family of the late Hazel Read and her daughter, the late Sandra Swain, who both sadly passed away in 2014 and 2012. Both mother and daughter used to meet in the at Hall Farm Café Restaurant for lunch. The family wanted to purchase a defibrillator in memory of their much loved mother and sister. With the family’s fantastic generosity to purchase this equipment, help and support from the local parish council, and Sue Lawrence (trainer and first responder) who went out into the community to raise awareness and gain even further funds to help towards purchasing an external cabinet and demonstration unit to assist her when training, we are now in a very privileged position to have this much needed defibrillator available for our local community. John Barrie, proprietor of Hall Farm said: “I cannot thank the family of Hazel and Sandra enough for this most generous contribution to the community of Stratford St Mary, we have placed the defibrillator at the front of the shop for easy access for anyone to come and use should the need arise.” There has been a plaque placed beside the defibrillator in memory of both mother and daughter, Hazel and Sandra. The aerial photo on the cover of this magazine was taken by Patrick Squire, the photographer in your area who can take any aerial or ground photos as requested. Your house and gardens will be looking especially nice at this time of year so have an aerial photo now. He will take a selection of 10 to 15 views at very reasonable cost. Patrick can also do reasonably priced children’s portraits and portraits of animals (dogs, cats, horses, etc.). Please phone: 07732 415238

In 1633, in the middle of the Thirty Years War, Bavaria was being swept by a plague epidemic and more than 80 lives had been lost in Oberammergau alone. The local elders vowed that if the village were purged of the plague, they would ‘keep the Passion tragedy every 10 years’. The epidemic came to a standstill and in 1634 the villagers fulfilled their solemn promise for the first time. Ever since they have loyally kept their vow and in 2020 Oberammergau will, for the 42nd time, be staging the Passion Play telling the story of Christ’s Passion, from His entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Resurrection and Transfiguration. NEWS FUTURE OF GENERAL PRACTICE – PART TWO

Lawford Parish Council

I realise that last month’s article announcing our merger with other local practices into a super partnership – the Colte Partnership – surprised many people, and I have received a number of questions and comments from patients since its publication. I am delighted that everyone has been very supportive of the change. I thought it may be helpful to share some of the commonly asked questions, together with my answers.

www.essexinfo.net/lawford-parish-council

Will patients still be registered with Ardleigh Surgery? The simple answer is yes. Patients will still register with the surgery of their choice and will be seen at that surgery. There are no plans for patients to be seen in other partnership premises for normal, routine appointments. However, the partnership is looking to stay open longer and possibly open at weekends too. In that case, it may be that out of normal hours, you would be asked to attend one of the other surgeries within the partnership. Will our GPs still be here? Absolutely. Our partners are now partners within the new organisation and all the doctors within it are keen to retain their own autonomy within their practice. There is no intention that the GPs will move. However, it may be that some part time GPs may work in more than one location. Dr Lenart, Sister Harrison and myself are all part of the super-partnership’s management structure. What are the benefits? As an organisation with nearly 120,000 patients we can bid for contracts and commission services. We have a much greater bargaining power. For example, in the future we may be able to commission our own district nurses, attached to the practice, rather than rely on the current service. It may be possible to get hospital consultants to do outreach clinics in our premises to save visits to the hospital. For the practice there are economies of scale. Before the merger, each practice was running a payroll, purchasing equipment, had to register with various bodies like the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the Information Commissioner. We are now moving to centralise some of these functions so that we have, for example, one CQC registration. This will free a considerable amount of practice time. I will be arranging a Patient Participation Group meeting shortly, so that all patients, not just those on the committee, are able to ask questions about the merger. Information as to the date will be in the magazines, at the practice and on our website. Best wishes Practice Manager Stephanie Durrant

NEWS JAMES CARTLIDGE, MP FOR SOUTH SUFFOLK

MANNINGTREE & DISTRICT DEMENTIA CAFÉ

I was extremely grateful to have received such a strong mandate from the voters of South Suffolk at the recent general election. Achieving over 60% of the vote, the highest share in the constituency’s history, was something I would not have dreamed of. However, I am fully aware that this is only a time limited mandate, and there is now a duty for me to deliver and keep working hard as your Member of Parliament.

This is a new venture, supported by the Patient Participation Group of the Riverside Health Practice, to be held on a monthly basis, offering a meeting place for those living with dementia and their carers.

It looks like I will continue to serve South Suffolk against a national backdrop of seemingly never-ending Westminster drama. The cause of this latest bout of unplanned intrigue was an election result that few had predicted when Theresa May surprised the nation, including myself, in announcing that she would go to the country. But the one lesson I have learned as an MP is that nothing is predictable anymore. And so we face a Hung Parliament, and at the time of writing, talks with the Democratic Unionist Party are progressing about coming to some kind of arrangement for them to support us. I would emphasise that the DUP have previously entered into talks with other governments who were not sure of their majority, most notably Gordon Brown’s Labour government. If it turns out that they do commit to some kind of agreement it is unlikely to be a full coalition and it does not mean for one minute that we are endorsing all of their views or policies. Rather, it is a fact that the country requires a government and we have a duty to find a way to provide stability amidst the current uncertainty. Of course nobody wanted this outcome, but politics is about facing up to the reality of one’s position and dealing with it. That is what we are doing. We must not forget that our country is confronted by a heightened level of terror threat and imminent Brexit negotiations which will be extremely challenging. It is simply not possible to proceed confidently as a people without a government able to do its core job of stewarding the nation from day to day. I hold regular advice surgeries offering help and support to local people. Please see page 8 for my contact details.

Nepal Children’s Trust Cake Stall at Bakes and Blossoms in Brantham on Saturday, July 21, 10am-noon. NCT aims to support children in extreme poverty in Nepal in a manner that sees every penny donated being spent directly on the children’s needs, and not on bureaucracy and corruption.

We will provide a safe, friendly and secure meeting place, with refreshments, together with an opportunity to meet others in a similar position. As the café develops activities will be added, as will the possibility of specialist support from other organisations. The next meeting is on July 21 (third Friday of the month) from 10.30am12.30pm at Foundry Court, Colchester Road, Manningtree. All are welcome – carers, those living with dementia and volunteers to join our team of helpers! NEWS CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE

SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM

Phone System Upgrade We will be further upgrading our telephone system over the summer. Patients will no longer experience a busy tone when all lines are engaged, but will be informed of their position in a queue. This information will be updated as you progress through the queue. At peak times we have up to seven receptionists answering calls, so even if there are a number of patients already in the queue, your waiting time shouldn’t be too long. Whatever time you ring during the day you will be able to speak to a doctor if you need to, unless demand is exceptionally high. If all our faceto-face appointments have already been booked, a doctor will phone you back to discuss your problem and if you need to be seen in person they will arrange for you to be seen that same day. Patient Information Screens We have purchased new computers to run the patient information screens at East Bergholt and Capel which should now be more reliable. They convey useful information provided by the NHS and also details of how we operate the practice and how best to access the services we offer. Medical Receptionists Our medical receptionists can help with a wide range of issues. Increasingly, we are training them to ensure they are equipped to help patients and signpost to a variety of support services. If you have a medical problem, it helps if you disclose it to them so they can ensure you are seen by the right practice clinician (GP, Nurse Practitioner, Practice Nurse or Health Care Assistant). Pharmacists and osteopaths can help for many conditions, and there are many support services available which offer expert advice to help patients with issues such as bereavement, dementia, etc. Our reception team can provide information on these services. National Diabetes Audit The practice is participating in the National Diabetes Audit. This is an NHS initiative which aims to determine how the Clinical Commissioning Group and practices across Suffolk can improve the effectiveness of treatment for patients with diabetes. This involves sharing patient information with NHS England, though strict confidentiality and security rules will apply. Please inform the practice if you do not want your information to be shared for this purpose. Training Days A reminder that in 2017 the practice will be closed from 1pm on the following dates for staff training: Thursday, July 13 and Thursday, September 7. On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescriptions are picked up well beforehand. If you phone the practice the recorded message will ask you to ring 111 for medical assistance if your problem cannot wait until the next day. Practice Manager Pete Keeble

In the light of the recent tragic attacks in Manchester and London, I thought it might be worth taking a different theme this month and talking about terrorism. While Suffolk is a relatively low-risk county for terrorist incidents, we should not be complacent, and all Suffolk Police Officers are trained in line with the government’s ‘PREVENT’ strategy, which you can view online at: www.gov.uk (search ‘prevent’). Up and down the country, the police and security services rely on information which is passed to us by ordinary members of the public – we rely on you to be our eyes and ears. What is Radicalisation? People are not born ‘terrorists’. They go through a process to either become a terrorist or support extremist causes in other ways. This can happen to anyone, which makes spotting it difficult, but what we do know is that people are far more likely to be radicalised if they are vulnerable. Those who are most vulnerable are (but not limited to): • Younger people from age 13 upwards • Those experiencing an identity or personal crisis • Individuals with feelings of unmet aspirations or a sense of injustice • People with a need for adventure or excitement • Those with a pre-existing conviction that their religion or culture is under threat • Individuals who feel socially isolated and, possibly, are suffering from depression • Those who have a history of criminal behaviour What are the signs that someone may be at risk of radicalisation? • Being overly secretive about their online viewing – this being one of the core ways in which ISIS is known to communicate. • Displaying feelings of isolation or expressions of an ‘us and them’ mentality – a sign of the sense of social isolation. • Becoming more argumentative or domineering in their viewpoints, being quick to condemn those who disagree and ignoring views that contradict their own. • Questioning their faith or identity. • Downloading or promotion extremist content. • Social isolation – losing interest in activities they used to enjoy, distancing themselves from friends and social groups. • Altered appearance – change in style of dress and/or appearance. • Abnormal routines, travel patterns or aspirations. What can YOU do if you are worried about someone being radicalised? The simple answer is – TELL US! ANTI-TERRORIST HOTLINE: 0800 789 321

OUT & ABOUT MANNINGTREE LOCAL HISTORY GROUP The talk in May was The Lost Port of Tendring by Roger Kennell, a volunteer researcher for the Victorian County History of Essex. The lost port of Tendring was located somewhere between Holland Haven and Frinton and was known as Gunfleet. The large sandbank in the North Sea off the east coast of Essex was named after the port. Roger first became aware of the area when Essex County Council was surveying the coast with regard to the area in the Second World War. Lottery funding enabled 22 volunteers to research Holland Haven. It was discovered that the land between Holland Brook and Pickers Ditch was once a marsh bordered estuary with ships docking and unloading cargoes at a small port there. A map of 1577 shows the estuary clearly. One-hundred years later a whale became trapped in the estuary and it was realised that the area was beginning to silt up. Marine trade became affected and people moved away. In the 17th century a sea wall was built across the estuary from Frinton to Holland Haven with a sluice at Little Holland. The land was reclaimed from the sea and sheep were grazed on the marshes. Roger’s talk was well illustrated with maps old and new and there was a lively question and answer session afterwards. Books on the subject were available to buy. Our talk on July 26 is The Latest 200 of Manningtree History. We meet in the Methodist Hall as usual at 7.30pm for 7.45pm. Members free, visitors £3, everybody welcome.

TEA & SUPPORT Tea & Support is a friendship and self-help group, formed some four years ago for those who have been bereaved or are living alone. We meet from 2-4pm on the third Wednesday afternoon of each month in the Church Hall, New Road, Mistley. These meetings usually consist of a talk or activity followed by an opportunity to chat over tea and homemade cake. Several times a year we have an outing to somewhere local for either lunch or afternoon tea. As our numbers have increased we have needed to hire transport for these outings. To cover our costs we now ask our members for a donation of £1 each per meeting attended. For further information please contact Joy or John Baker on 01206 391918 or for transport please call Paskell’s on 01206 396709. The 2017 programme is now available from Paskell’s in Manningtree, in St Mary & St Michael’s Church and Bradfield Church or from the Benefice office on 01206 392200. FISH & CHIP LUNCH July is the month for our fish & chip lunch! This has become a popular annual event and this year we are going back to the cafe at Felixstowe Ferry. Please note we will meet at the Church Hall at 10.30am on July 19 for transport to Felixstowe Ferry. If you would like to join us, please contact Sue Orriss on 01206 395355 or Joy Baker (after July 10) on 01206 391918 to pre-order your choice of lunch.

MANNINGTREE & DISTRICT PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY In May, we rounded off our year with two events, a friendly competition with our neighbouring Harwich & Dovercourt Camera Club and our Annual General Meeting. We were pleased to welcome Harwich again and also to meet experienced judge Howard King who delighted us with his valid and incisive comments. A fairly close competition was won by our guests, although Manningtree did perform very well in the projected images. Standout prints were Mountain Man in B/W by Mark Rivers (MG), Blackwater Fire Spin by Carol Spicer (HD) and Eroding Sea Defences by Paul Andrews (HD). Among the projected images, Passage of Time by Barry Weaver (MG), First Site by Tim Stott (MG) and Lilly loves Elvis in B/W by Mark Rivers (MG), together with Mind the Breeze by George Fossey (HD), all attracted top marks. A thorough review of the year accompanied the more usual formalities at the AGM, steered through by chairman Frank Pearson. Frank was pleased with the progress made by the society, and commented on the rising standard of member’s work and the welcome addition of some new members. Now that the society was becoming more established it was felt appropriate to recognise the early commitment of founder members by conferring honorary membership on David Webb and Duncan Gordon, together with Harold and Hasje Mousley, which was approved by all present. Frank expressed thanks to both the officers and members for their commitment and their helpfulness in running and supporting the regular evening meetings throughout the season. Prizes were presented to members who had achieved particularly high markings in the competitions. In a review of finances, it was reluctantly agreed that the annual subscription would need to be raised to £40 after several years without any increase. FUTURE MEETINGS Our 2017/18 season will commence in September and run through to May 2018. Another full programme of talks and competitions is promised which we hope will further your enjoyment of this fascinating hobby. We meet twice monthly on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm at the St John’s Centre, Station Road, Manningtree CO11 1EB. New members are welcome to join or may attend initially as a visitor (£3). Please contact Margaret, our secretary, for more information: 01206 396958 / madps@post.com www.manningtreeanddistrictphotographicsociety.co.uk

ADVERTORIAL

PHENOMENAL DIFFERENCE

Angela Carpenter of Colchester was diagnosed with hearing loss when she was a teenager. “I was very resistant to the idea of needing a hearing aid,” she says, “as I associated it with only old people.” Eventually, in her 20s, she acquired analogue hearing aids on the NHS – “but all they did was amplify sound.” Her mum then recommended she come to The Hearing Care Centre and she has been a client of the award-winning private practice since 2003. “When I was looking at other providers, I just felt like a number,” says Angela. “But at the centre, everyone takes the time to get to know you and your needs. There is a high level of empathy. Transitioning to digital hearing aids was also amazing. The difference to analogue is phenomenal.” Angela’s most recent hearing aids are a pair of Phonak Audéo Venture V90s, along with a streaming device. “These have made a massive difference to me,” she says. “I no longer find telephone conversations difficult and they also cut out background traffic noise when I go running. Yet I can still hear my running mate talking, which certainly keeps me going.” Angela enjoys many sporty activities with her new hearing aids, although does confess to using her older aids when she goes rowing: “I rely on my hearing aids so much and am fearful in case something happens to them and I am left in a silent world. On the other hand, I also feel reassured by the centre’s support. They have already stepped in with a pair of loan aids when I sent mine away for adjustments. “With my new Phonaks, I can easily hear my teenage daughter in a different room. Listening is much less effort and the instruments are far more comfortable and discreet. The team have also taken the time to make sure that I fully understand the product and get the best use out of it.” Find out more about how digital hearing aids can transform your life at The Hearing Care Centre Manningtree Open Day on July 13. OUT & ABOUT STOUR VALLEY U3A On Wednesday, July 12, Dr Stephen Ashworth, Senior Lecturer at UEA, will talk on kitchen chemistry and present a science show using readily available materials to illustrate some of the principles of chemistry. Acids, bases, catalysts and indicators are all part of this exploration of some of the chemicals that are all around us. We don’t have a speaker meeting in August, but our popular summer dinner takes place once again at the Constable Hall on August 4. Our speaker on September 13 is Sean Day who will update us on The Harwich Mayflower Project. Our main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those who are no longer in full time employment and emphasis is always placed on making learning active and fun as well as helping in developing friendships. We have a wide range of groups including language study, country walking and computer studies and groups that visit gardens, churches and historic buildings. In the main, membership is drawn from communities in the lower Stour Valley and adjacent areas including Brantham, Capel St Mary, Dedham, East Bergholt, Holbrook, Lawford, Manningtree, Raydon and Stratford St Mary. We are affiliated to the ThirdAge Trust, have over 260 members and 21 groups. For further information please visit www. stourvalleyu3a.org.uk where membership secretary Gillian Gibbs may be contacted. We meet at Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2.15pm. Annual membership is £12 which entitles members to attend meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, except August and December. It’s never too late to learn! Join the 361,477 members across 969 U3As throughout the UK today.

ORWELL DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY June 7 saw the society’s final meeting of the season. A finger-food lunch for our members was followed by the AGM. Then Deborah Lambert talked to us on the subject of a very unique building and its many, illustrious and infamous residents. The Lawn Road Flats building in Belsize Park, London NW3 was opened in 1934. Built in reinforced concrete and pale pink in colour, it was a homage to modernist design and architecture and greatly influenced by the German Bauhaus Movement. In its heyday it housed artists, designers, writers (Agatha Christie was a resident) and even a notorious Soviet spy ring! Deborah, who lived near the flats as a teenager, described all the innovative concepts in the design of the building and in its furniture, and introduced many of its famous residents. After a long period of decline and dereliction in the 1990s, the flats have been now been beautifully restored and the building has its own museum-gallery which she encourages us to visit. It was an enthralling talk. We have our summer break now, but members are welcomed back on September 6 when Mark Hill of Antique Roadshow fame, will present a talk entitled Curves, Colours and Cool: An Introduction to Mid-Century Modern. The meeting will begin at 2.15pm. So why not become a member and enjoy good company and an interesting talk? We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. The meeting lasts about an hour. Tea and coffee are available up until 2pm. Guests and nonmembers welcome, provided we have available space. Exceptionally popular lectures will have a guests/visitor limit of 20 so please contact Wendy Robbins before the day on 01394 823807 to check if there is available space. For latest events and news visit: www.orwelldfas.org.uk

STOUR VALLEY MEN’S PROBUS CLUB Tom Tyler returned on June 7 with a talk entitled When Holidays Were Fun and on June 21 John Field presented a talk entitled The Redevelopment of Ipswich Docks. On July 5 Lewis Tyler presents Daddy, what is TV? and on Wednesday, July 19 we are holding our summer lunch to which we invite our spouses and Probus widows. This year we have moved to The Haywain to enjoy the occasion. We don’t hold a meeting in August and return after our break on Wednesday, September 6 when Tom Williams presents Everyone Has a Book in Them, followed on Wednesday, September 20 by Philip Roberts with a talk titled The Mary Rose. Our club endeavours to be simple in structure, free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs and involve members at minimal cost. The club is directed primarily to providing fellowship between members who are compatible with each other and the opportunity for development of acquaintances. New members are welcomed. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at St John Ambulance HQ, Manningtree CO11 1EB at 10.30am. For further details please contact speaker secretary Dave Carman: 01255 880202

OUT & ABOUT BRANTHAM OVER SIXTIES CLUB

RSPB FLATFORD WILDLIFE GARDEN

May 9: We are always pleased to support the guide dog training scheme and enjoyed a talk by Marjorie Cullen who, accompanied by trainee puppy Quaba, spoke about the various aspects of training with puppy walkers and at the Guide Dog Training School until ready to start their useful working life.

As we move into July some of our largest and most iridescent flying insects can be seen darting about the garden at Flatford. Dragonflies are always fascinating with their tantalising flashes of colour as they swoop and dart through the air, catching insect prey in flight. We have a great view of them from just outside the barn. They’re not the easiest of insects to identify individually, but they do sometimes pose obligingly on flower stems and tall blades of grass in our mini flower meadow.

May 16: Members enjoyed a roast lunch followed by a quiz. May 23: A very interesting talk by Richard Walker entitled When Pirates Ruled the Waves, a title with a twist so we won’t spoil the plot with details. May 30: Games afternoon with Scrabble, darts, dominoes and Sorry, which was very successful. DATES FOR THE DIARY July 11: Floral Delights – arrangements by Pat South July 18: Quiz, preceded by roast lunch (other dishes available) July 25: Ladies Day at Ascot with Barbara Faulkner August 15: Annual fundraiser with a ploughman’s lunch at 1pm and bring and buy and cake stalls at 2.30pm. Meetings are held at Brantham Leisure Centre on Tuesdays (bar the first in the month) at 2.30pm. Visitors and new members are always very welcome. For more details contact Jean Lace: 01206 396242

LAWFORD & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Fossils of dragonflies have been found that are believed to date back 220 million years, so we’re the newcomers on the block here. The smaller and more slender damselflies have been delighting us in the garden since May, and anyone who has a pond in their own garden may well have been attracting them too. Their eggs are laid in water, where the larvae feed on other aquatic insect larvae and even small tadpoles. Keep an eye out for new adults emerging from the depths via plant stems. If you’re looking for something for the children to do during the long holidays that start towards the end of the month, something that involves them being outside in the fresh air and engaging with nature in beautiful surroundings, remember that RSPB Flatford Wildlife Garden is on your doorstep. We will be offering nature-related family activities, including nature trail challenges, owl pellet dissection, bird feeder making and craft activities during the school holidays, with a programme that changes from week to week. No booking is required, just turn up and join in! We open at 10.30am and the gates close at 4.30pm. There is a small charge that includes all activities available on the day, and there is a discount for RSPB members. For visitors who join the RSPB on that particular day, there will be no activity charge on that occasion. For full details visit the website.

Chris Lambert gave an interesting talk last month about the jobs necessary for an attractive spring garden. He worked at Beth Chatto’s garden for 18 years and is now at The Place for Plants at East Bergholt. He brought along the tools of his trade, some that had been modified especially for him and others that seemed to be his ‘treasures’. He went through all the jobs that we ought to do, if we only had time. He also brought along a wonderful range of unusual spring flowering plants which he told us about and allowed members to buy at the end.

If you haven’t visited us for a while, you’ll find some giant wooden creatures around the garden by following our new family activity trail too. These new additions join our log piles to rummage in, a child-sized nest box and a wonderful living willow tunnel to race through! So, all this set in the peaceful surroundings of the garden that slopes gently down towards the Stour, with plenty of places to picnic, means that there’s something for everyone. We look forward to seeing you.

Our meeting on July 20 will be with Dr Chris Gibson and a talk entitled What Why Where Essex Wildflowers. Do come along and join us.

If you have some spare time available and would be interested in volunteering with the RSPB locally, do get in touch for information about the range of roles available: 01206 391153 / shirley.sampson@rspb.org.uk

Thanks to all the people who gave plants to our sale. Even more thanks to those who bought them and helped us raise more than £500 for the society.

SCHOOLS BROOKLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL I still remember taking my first class as if it were yesterday. The names and excited faces looking back at me. Moving into their twenties now, but they will always be in my memories. My love for teaching is as strong now as ever and my role has evolved into not just nurturing a single class, but supporting and nurturing a whole school in a multitude of ways while also developing talented teachers and leaders of the future.

For information on how they can apply for their child to join Brooklands during the school year (in-year applications) please contact: admissions@suffolk.gov.uk / 0345 600 0981 Headteacher Christine Davy

MANNINGTREE HIGH SCHOOL

Brooklands’ leadership team and governing body have been working closely with the local authority’s Infra-Structure team and architects to plan for the future expansion of the school. In response to the proposed housing development we are planning for the needs of the school and the community and will keep you updated on progress as we go. Throughout the next few weeks our children will be ticking things on their ’50 things to do before you leave Brooklands’ list. Along with growing beans and potatoes, they will be enjoying their crops in a few weeks’ time and celebrating the chance to tick off ‘eating something they have grown’. Our Pufferfish have been learning how to ride their bicycles and be safe as part of Bikeability, while our Narwhals and Pufferfish will also be visiting the New Wolsey Theatre to take part in drama workshops. Meanwhile, live music will be ringing out at our Brooklands Friends and Family summer music event and our Sea turtles will be heading off to the beach when they visit Wrabness. The summer term is a great time and promises many new experiences for all our children. It is wonderful to see that once again we have been inundated with applications to join the school in September. Thirty children will be joining us in the autumn, taught by Megan Glazin. Do you know of families moving into the area who would like to come to us? We currently have a limited number of places in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Our Year 9 boy’s football team have gone unbeaten this season, winning both the district league and now the North East Essex Schools Sports Award cup final. After going a goal down early in the second half in the final, Manningtree stayed positive, continued to play good football and fought back to level. Shortly after they added a second goal, then scored a third in the dying minute to make it 3-1 and lift the cup. Their hard work and determination saw them win games, the final included, which could easily have gone the other way. The boys have been a real credit to the school throughout this game and the season as a whole. They’re hoping to build on their success this year and enter the coastal cup competition next season.

The season started sluggishly for the club in terms of results, but for the 1st XI the visit of hitherto top of the table Woolpit saw a dramatic change in fortunes. A massive score of 342, with 96 from James Scott and 146 from skipper Danny Goff, proved far too many for the visitors with Bruce Leeke taking five wickets to give Mistley a sensational victory by 205 runs. The 2nds, at Woolpit, and 3rds, at Yoxford, also won to make it a great day, and on top of that the Ladies won two games over the same weekend too. The results have been somewhat up and down since then and all our teams are currently in the middle reaches of the league tables. Treasurer: Mr Gordon King Church Bookings: David Shearmur, 01206 395263 In June we held a very successful and memorable weekend celebrating our 210th anniversary with a gift day on Saturday 3 which raised £1,000 (final total not yet in) followed by a concert by Spectrum ladies choir from Clacton and local artists which raised a further £260. Worship on Sunday 4 was led by The Rev Martin Turner from Cheltenham, recently retired minister of Westminster Central Hall. The moving morning worship was followed by an excellent lunch and shared fellowship.

The 2016-17 season is now over. All in all it was a good season for the club. The First Team finished in sixth position in the Senior Division, a sound return in something of a transitional season. The Reserves were fourth in League A, but they became the stars of the club when they secured the Goals of Ipswich Cup with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Claydon Reserves in the final at Woodbridge. Their success in bringing some silverware back to Gandish Road gave cause to some celebration amongst the ranks. The A Team completed their schedule with back to back victories, which comfortably ensured their League B status and can be considered something of a success after a tough season. There have been some exciting developments on the management front. Ben Swan has left his role as coach to take up a position with Brantham Athletic, we wish him well. However, the club is delighted that former Debenham manager Dale Vince has agreed to join the club as First Team/ club coach. Dale brings with him considerable knowledge and experience and his appointment is a very positive move. Also Cieran Dadds has decided to take more of a back seat following the birth of his daughter. Cieran has done a fine job for which the club is very grateful. We are very pleased that Lee Webb has re-joined the club to fill Cieran’s position as A Team manager. We are always looking for people who can help the club as committee members, either on the playing side or just in the background. If you would like to sponsor the club in some capacity we would also be delighted to hear from you. EBUFC is a community club with very strong village traditions. Sunday, July 9 10.30am Holy Communion (Common Worship), Bradfield 10.30am Family Worship with Treasure Seekers, Mistley 6pm Evening Prayer at Mistley

We’re writing this the day after the General Election, and whether you’re delighted or disappointed with the results, right now everything feels a bit unclear. Not only that, but it’s still only six days since the attack on London, and less than three weeks after the Manchester Arena bombing, events that not only make the future feel unclear but also unsafe and uncertain.

Sunday, July 16 10.30am Family Worship with Treasure Seekers, Bradfield 10.30am Holy Communion (Common Worship), Mistley 6pm Quiet Communion, Bradfield

We don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but we do believe that God is good all the time. He is good in times of uncertainty, He is good in times of darkness and He’s good in times of pain. We’re going to be exploring more of this in our Café Church gathering this month (July 23), but if you’d like to speak to anyone in the meantime, we’d love to hear from you. Please use the contact details below and get in touch. We’re really excited to have one thing a bit more certain. The Rev Dominic Turner is going to be appointed as our new Priest-in-Charge on Wednesday, July 26. We are so thankful that Dom is coming to join us, along with his wife Debbie and their children. Everyone is welcome to join us in thanking God and welcoming Dom and his family at the special Licensing Service at Mistley Church on Wednesday, July 26 at 7.30pm. We hope to see you there! Finally for your diary, we will be marking 100 years since Squadron Commander Edwin Dunning’s death on Monday, August 7 at Bradfield Church. More information on Edwin Dunning and the service itself coming next month! Please don’t forget to check the website and publications in and around the churches for more information and events. If you’d like to get weekly updates of what’s going on in the Benefice, please email the office and ask to be put on the distribution list. CHURCH NEWS Meeting at Old St Michael’s School on Trinity Road, Manningtree Real confidence! Can you have it? Do you have it? Let us explore the possibility by asking these questions… Where do you find wisdom? What is it that makes your heart rejoice? What helps you to see things clearly? What is there that lasts forever? What always speaks true? What is it that revives your soul? What can possibly be more desirable than gold? And what tastes sweeter than honey? Is there anything that always leads to great reward? There is one answer that fits all these questions at the same time. The Bible claims for itself to be the Word of God our creator, who knows us better than ourselves and wants to have a quality relationship with us. That’s quite a claim, but when you think about it, we need something certain that comes from ‘outside’ ourselves don’t we? Our politicians, scientists and celebrities certainly don’t have all the answers, there is very little that is certain here or that gives us confidence! No human being or human creation does. So why not join us to investigate the claims of the Bible? We will be studying Psalm 119, an ancient, carefully crafted, poetic presentation of the claim that the Bible is the way to find and know what God would have us do. King David (1040-970 BC) claimed that by studying the Word of God “the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart [would] be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Wouldn’t you like to have confidence like that? Everyone is welcome at our Sunday services with lively worship and fantastic fellowship at 10.30am and again in the evening at 6.30pm. Services last between 60 and 90 minutes and refreshments follow the morning service. BRANTHAM & CAPEL METHODIST CHURCHES THE BEST LAID PLANS How many plans backfire on the one making them? David Cameron planned the referendum, but he didn’t get the result he wanted and he resigned. Boris Johnson planned to take over, positioned himself on the ‘leave’ side, but was pipped to the post in the nominations and didn’t even get on the ballot paper. Then Theresa May planned for an election to have a larger majority, only to find her majority wiped out and dependent on others to prop her up. To be a politician you need a certain amount of self-confidence and a thick skin to take the knocks and criticisms that come, but it can so easily tip over into arrogance and the best laid plans come to nothing. It’s understandable that we want to (and need to) plan for the future. We do everything in our power to ensure our future measures up to our expectations. Businesses encourage us in this, pension plans, investment plans, insurances against anything and everything, even funeral plans. These have their place, but nothing can guarantee the future – we never know what tomorrow may bring, shattered plans or even death in a concert hall or on the streets. James wrote: “You should know better than to say ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to the city. We will do business there for a year and make a lot of money!’ What do you know about tomorrow? How can you be so sure about your life? It is nothing more than mist that appears for only a little while before it disappears. You should say, ‘If the Lord lets us live, we will do these things’ (James 4:13-15). It is necessary to look ahead, but it is also vital that we live each day as it comes, valuing it for what it is, and being open to what it might bring rather than arrogantly planning to prosper. How about “walking humbly with our God”. (Micah 6:8) If you want to discover more about walking with God, please be in touch by phone, email, text or letter. Share any comments or challenges that you find are raised for you. Catholic Commentary “Issues like slavery and the death penalty were once considered normal, but now we know them to be inadmissible,” the Pope has recently commented. “Faith is a journey guided by the Holy Spirit who helps the church grow in understanding the sinful nature of these once-accepted practices. While people once even used religious reasons to justify these practices and ‘wars of religion’, over time the Holy Spirit has deepened the church’s understanding of the Gospel.”

He said slavery “is a mortal sin; today we say this. Back then, some would say that this could be done because these people did not have a soul.” The number of people enslaved today is “even more, but at least we know that it is a mortal sin. The same goes for the death penalty; for a time, it was normal. Today, we say that the death penalty is inadmissible.” When Catholics go to confession, he said, they should consider not only the shame they feel for their sins, but they should recognise that confession as another step they need to make in preparation for meeting the Lord. “Asking God’s forgiveness is not automatic,” he said. By understanding their sins and asking God for forgiveness, Christians will discover that they are part of “a people on the way and that one day – perhaps today, tomorrow or in 30 years – I will find myself face-toface with that Lord who never leaves us alone, who accompanies us on the way.” “This is the great work of God’s mercy,” he concluded Events and diary dates The 100 Club draw took place on Sunday, June 18 when three lucky winners shared £143. CHERRY KITCHEN MAKEOVERS EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE PERFECT KITCHEN I established Cherry Kitchen Makeovers because not everyone wants or can afford a whole new kitchen. Also quite honestly there’s no need for the extra hassle and expense a lot of the time. I knew that with a great range of top quality products, hard work and good customer service we would be a success. I also feel that more and more people like to use local family run businesses as they get a more personal service. Of course I like working with my son Ben as it’s hard to get him round for Sunday dinner nowadays. I even managed to get my other son, Ross, back from university last summer to help paint the new showroom! Our doors are fitted to your original kitchen carcass with minimum hassle, a solution which costs approximately half the price of a full refit. In certain kitchens there is only so much that can be done with the layout and it simply needs an update. We can suggest plenty of ways to create a completely new look while still making the best use of the available space. If you want to breathe new life into your old kitchen call us today on 01206 615858/932466 or visit www.cherry-kitchens.co.uk to request a free brochure.
