NEWS

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR The game has just ended! I’m utterly devastated but have spent the last ten minutes trying (unconvincingly) to persuade my eight-year-old son it’s not the end of the world. It’s all falling on deaf ears just now, but hopefully not for long. We will pick ourselves up and we will come back, and next time we will have experience on our side.

MACMILLAN FUNDRAISING: LONDON TO PARIS IN MEMORY OF EDDIE ROGERS On July 25, my dad and I will be embarking an on a crazy adventure, riding from London to Paris on our push bikes in loving memory of my late Uncle Eddie. That’s 310 miles in four days!

Well done boys. Football might not be coming home today, but you will be given a heroes’ welcome when you do.

Eddie (pictured) sadly passed away just before the New Year after a long two-year battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed by his wife Doreen, three children, Jason, Dean and Kerry, and their families.

As a Galway girl I have experienced a similar degree of disappointment more times that I wish to acknowledge. So much of the summer (every summer) in Ireland revolves around GAA fixtures and it’s impossible not to get caught up in the excitement. We grow up playing hurling and camogie and the rivalry is intense, especially at club level. Every game is analysed and every move dissected ad infinitum until the next game. Then it starts all over again.

Although this brought sadness upon our family, I’ve found inspiration from the kindness of the Macmillan Nurses and carers to do what I can to help them to continue doing their amazing job.

Sport can be cruel, but when it’s joyful, there really is nothing quite like it. When you support a team, you become a member of an extensive community. Even though I’m 500 miles from home I feel proud when I fly the Galway flag. That sense of heritage, that wonderful belonging, will stay with me forever. I shall forever be a Galway girl.

Uncle Eddie was a true legend, he had numerous friends and everyone loved his cheeky grin and helpful nature. Eddie and his wife Doreen had been residents of Sproughton for over 50 years and Eddie was a well-known member of the local community.

Of course I’m now also a Suffolk girl and I’ve been as caught up in the excitement of the World Cup as everyone else. Even if you’re not a footy fan, I hope you have engaged with the World Cup in some small way and that the feel-good factor stays with you for a long time. I also hope it inspires you to appreciate the value of shared experience and to seek out opportunities to spend time with others without the expense of a long-haul flight. Whether you choose a sporting activity (either as participant or spectator), a coffee morning, a walk or a talk, there are opportunities aplenty in your local community and I hope In Touch motivates you reach out and grab the ball with both hands.

Eddie loved a beer or two and could often be seen at the Wild Man, British Legion and Bramford Bowls Club. Indeed, in the last few years Eddie became more and more involved in the bowls club and took particular delight in seeing his grandson Callum develop into a very promising bowler. So, in my own way cycling to Paris was the least I could do to play my tribute not only to this lovely, wonderful man, but also as a way of saying thank you to those wonderful staff at Macmillan who gave Eddie and the family such tremendous support during this sad time If you feel you would like to make a contribution to help us raise as much as possible then please go to my justgiving page via this link: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/missionforeddie Ronnie Bradford

SPROUGHTON VILLAGE FETE 2018 We’d like to say a huge thank you to all those people who supported this year’s village fete in Sproughton in any way: those on the organising committee who worked so hard in the months preceding the fete to make this one bigger and better than before; to all those people who ran stalls or performed for us in the grand ring; to the army of strongarm folks who helped us put up the tents and attractions early on the Sunday and helped us clear away afterwards so promptly. But most of all, to all those who turned out to enjoy themselves in the superb sunshine on our fantastic Millennium Green. Our luck with the weather this year could not have been better, but in a cruel twist of fate, the World Cup schedule threw up an England opening game slap bang in the middle of the fete. Despite a hurriedly set up TV screen in our beer tent, we were unable to offset the lure of such a national event and attendance was noticeably down on previous years. Despite that, the fete still made £1,142 on the day – more than enough to secure next year’s event. So thank you once again to those who came along, or who helped, or who planned. We could not have done it without you. Next year’s fete will be on Sunday, June 23, from noon-4pm. We hope to see you then. The winner of Best in Show was a six-year-old Best Teddy, a Lhasa Apso x Bichon Frise x Yorkshire Terrier owned by Louise Jacobs of Colchester.

NEWS SnOasis PARISH ALLIANCE (SPA) In the autumn of 2016, Onslow Suffolk Ltd put in an application to Mid Suffolk District Council for SnOasis Reserved Matters to be considered – Planning Application no. 4494/16. For details visit: www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/planningand-building/planning It is important to be aware that this is not a renewal of the original planning approval for SnOasis, which remains in place. Reserved Matters cover the detail of such topics as design, appearance, transport, drainage, etc. Our questions and comments about Reserved Matters were summarised in a document which was submitted to MSDC in the summer as the comments from the SPA and all its member parishes, giving the comments extra weight because they come from a significant number of local communities, representing over 11,000 registered voters. The SPA member parishes are Baylham, Barham, Bramford, Claydon and Whitton, Great Blakenham, Little Blakenham, Needham Market, Nettlestead and Somersham. As I reported to you in July, the SPA held a meeting with representatives from SnOasis and their planning consultants to discuss our concerns and queries about Reserved Matters. We received their response, but noted that many critical areas still remain unclear. The SPA sought clarification on this from the developers at the end of May. As I write this, there has still been no response whatsoever from the developers. I am sure you all share my concern about this lack of response to the genuine concerns of the local community. We also contacted BMDSC Planning to raise our continuing concerns and also to attempt to establish what the timescale is for progressing Reserved Matters. The response we have had from Planning indicates that they share our frustration with the lack of progress on resolving the outstanding matters for this development which has such big implications for so many local residents. The SPA fully supports Planning in their efforts to progress this application and I hope to be able to pass on some more positive information in the near future. For further information, please email SPA clerk Janet Gobey: snoasispa@icloud.com SnOasis Parish Alliance Chairman Steve Plume There have in the past been several letters from local residents complaining about the antisocial mess left behind by dogs for us to tread in. I cannot recall a single letter written in defence of those dog owners who are so often the target of frustrated anger and it is perhaps time to speak up on their behalf. Look at the problem from their point of view. Basically, we should understand that it is so much more convenient for the dog owner if the animal can leave its deposits beyond the boundary of its own garden, and especially so if the garden is small. It has great appeal. No searching for a plastic bag with which to pick up the excrement, no potentially smelly deposit in the dust bin, no treading of muck into the house. It makes sense to get your dog well away before letting it do its business. The real surprise is that very few dog owners take advantage of the possibilities. A useful refinement of the process is to let the dog choose an area where footfall is high. For example, on July 3 an impressive deposit was left on the grass just outside the primary school in Sproughton. This is an ideal location because it’s inevitable that some children will tread in it and distribute it widely, thus reducing the local problem. Indeed, assuming that some children will immediately get into cars, part of the problem will soon be far away. Admittedly, there are parents who might not like the smell, the slime, the task of washing off shoes and cleaning carpets; and they shouldn’t worry too much about the possibility of toxocariasis (look it up if you dare). Such parents should take comfort from the service they are doing for the dog owner who has been spared the potentially unpleasant task of picking up the putrid pieces.

JAMES CARTLIDGE, MP FOR SOUTH SUFFOLK At this time of year South Suffolk really does explode into vibrant natural splendour. It’s the open gardens season, with flora and fauna to the fore, and a chance for all of us to enjoy Suffolk at its best. A personal favourite is heading off on my bike along narrow rural backroads, to have the immense pleasure of seeing a hare or two scampering ahead in the distance. Then there is the still open water of the Stour, where whole stretches lull along seemingly unchanged from when Constable painted there. The constituency is spoilt for choice if you want to sample the best of the open gardens tradition. It would be remiss of me to pick a favourite, though I understand Chelsworth is one of the longest running in the whole country. But I do very much admire those who go to such trouble to throw open their home turf for people to marvel at from far and wide. On the matter of fauna, I am delighted to be the RSPB Parliamentary Species Champion of the Turtle Dove. This migrant species, once a staple of Suffolk’s summer skyline, has declined by more than 95 per cent across the UK since 1970, partly as the unavoidable result of changes in farming methods. I recently attended an RSPB visit in Boxford to see the work that a local farmer is doing to provide improved habitats to try to tempt these birds to land and nest in our area. The reversal of species decline, as with the majority of the issues facing our country, depends on heightened awareness, particularly in terms of educating the next generation. Therefore, I was pleased to donate an owl box – kindly made for me by a talented RSPB volunteer – to Bentley Primary School on the launch day of their Beast, Birds and Bugs club. Beyond education, the protection of our wildlife relies on action at national and international levels. As such, I was delighted that the government recently banned the sale of ivory products in the UK, a crucial step towards ensuring the future of one of the world’s most endangered animals. I hold regular advice surgeries offering help and support to local people. Please see page 12 for my contact details.

NEWS SPROUGHTON COMMUNITY SHOP: Something for everyone The shop continues to have local strawberries, raspberries and plants for sale. An exciting new addition to our local produce range is Copdock Hall wine in white and rose. As it is locally grown and bottled, it’s air miles are non existent! There is also a new member of the honey family... raw honey... which has not under gone the usual heat treatment and is proving very popular.

Our aim is to provide a community haven and thanks to volunteers and regular customers we do.

The village fete, school fete, Wimbledon and the World Cup will all be over by the time you read this. I hope you enjoyed some or all of these occassions. Although the village fete is organised by it’s dedicated band of helpers the shop sold over £200 worth of raffle tickets and collected donations for the hamper. Truely a community effort.

Our range of homemade cakes are provided from The Shed tea rooms and are much enjoyed by all who sample them.

Someone recently made reference to the number of new people they have met and friends they have made since being involved with the shop.

In keeping with technology and the modern (ever changing) world we are taking contactless payments and there is no minimum spend with a debit card.

As always, thanks to all our supporters and look forward to seeing you in the shop. Volunteer and Director Sally Sparrow www.sproughtoncommunityshop.co.uk / 01473 747768

A DOG DAY’S DELIGHT: KEY LIME PIE The Dog Days of Summer will soon come to an end, and will seem to some like a hazy memory. It certainly is for me, remembering the summers of a totally different climate, where even on the hottest of summer days we would survive with as little to do in the kitchen as possible. Thus the rise of the outdoor barbecue pits and light side dishes meant to stave off the appetite without losing too much energy at the same time. The coolest and most refreshing dishes also had to be nicely presented and so delectable they might be talked about for months. I hope you enjoy my recipe for Key Lime Pie made with actual Key Lime juice from (allegedly) Key West, Florida. Since limes are beautiful right now and readily available, don’t worry too much whether or not they actually came from the Keys; use fresh-squeezed lime juice and decorate with sprigs of mint. Then enjoy after dinner on your veranda while taking in the dramatic Suffolk sunset. And you’ll soon forget I ever mentioned Dog Days.

6 fresh egg yolks 1 tin sweetened condensed milk (397 g) 250 ml Key lime juice 6 egg whites 4 Tbsp sugar 1 pre-baked pastry shell Mix condensed milk into beaten egg yolks. Add juice and blend together well. Cook in the top of a double boiler until it thickens. While still hot pour into a 9-inch baked pastry shell. Beat egg whites until stiff, and gradually add sugar. Swirl on top of pie making sure the edges are sealed. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 150 ℃/Gasmark 2 for about 30 minutes, until the meringue is a pale honey-colour. Mary Bright Basan

MONTHLY MARKET IN SPROUGHTON Last month our regular meeting was invigorated by some new folk calling in for a coffee. Old acquaintances were renewed and some former inhabitants were so pleased to come and talk with us. Chatting is what it’s all about, so why not join us for a coffee, some cards and possibly some home-made cakes and/or garden produce? The profits from these markets go to the Church General Fund. Just call in for a coffee and a chat – we would be pleased to see you in the Church Hall between 10 and 11am on the second Saturday in the month. Sproughton Church Hall Have you borrowed a tray from the hall and inadvertently forgotten to return it? They are so useful for catering in the hall, and we really miss it! We would be so pleased to welcome it home again!

100 YEARS AGO It was reported in the Ipswich Journal that a John Thwaites of Sproughton was guilty of misdemeanour and had 12 months imprisonment and two public whippings. We wonder what he had done. D.B.

Litter Pick Earlier this summer, 22 of us from the Suffolk-energy-from-waste facility and from the wider Suez team took part in a litter pick at Southwold beach. We collected five big bags of rubbish from the coastline. This was part of SUEZ4Ocean, a worldwide campaign aimed at reducing pollution in our oceans. It encourages employees to get involved by organising beach clean-ups in their local areas. The oceans are under threat from pollution, 80 per cent of which comes from the land and human activity. There are 269,000 tonnes of plastic floating on the ocean surface. It is estimated there will be more pieces of plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050. Here at SUEZ we are doing our bit to prevent waste ending up in the ocean. The Suffolk team are planning to do more litter picks in the future.

Every year in the UK, approximately 2.3m people experience problems with earwax and need to have it removed.

Big Walk This summer SUEZ recycling and recovery UK is challenging all its employees, families and friends to join us in taking a step forward for every person diagnosed with cancer by collectively walking 357,000km, one kilometre for each person diagnosed. Up and down the country SUEZ employees have been collecting the kilometres from miles walked in Cornwall, marathons along the River Themes to meanders along the coast in Northumberland.

With more and more GP Surgeries reducing their wax removal services and long delays to get an appointment, one local hearing care company has joined forces with a Hadleigh Healthcare Centre to try and help.

The team in Suffolk did their big walk on June 14, walking six miles from site and down the Gipping Valley. We were blessed with glorious weather and all 20 employees and five dogs had a wonderful time. We raised £100 on the day, but a World Cup sweepstake will be adding more to the total once the World Cup is finished.

The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at Health by Design on Hadleigh High Street, will be offering both ear syringing and micro suction from Thursday, August 16. The private ear care clinics will be held every other Thursday morning between 9am and 1pm.

Come and have a look around The Suffolk energy-from-waste facility is holding a series of open days over the summer, which will include a tour of the facility and time to explore our visitor centre. Places are currently available on Wednesday, September 5, 10am-noon. There are 20 spaces and you must pre-book.

NEW DEDICATED CLINIC IN HADLEIGH OFFERING EARWAX REMOVAL

The award-winning company that celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, also runs a hearing clinic from the centre every Tuesday, which helps those in need with hearing difficulties. For more information call 01473 230330 or visit: www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/waxremoval

www.keepingintouchwith.com/sproughton

To book your place, please email suffolkefw@suez.com and we will confirm your place by email. If you would like to come but cannot make these dates, you can email us to register your interest and we will let you know when the next open days are planned.

IPSWICH AND DISTRICT PROBUS CLUB

Jackie Durrant: 01449 672690

Probus clubs are for retired or semi-retired business gentlemen. The primary objective is to provide fellowship between members and to share similar interests in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

SPROUGHTON SENIOR CITIZENS’ CLUB

We meet monthly at the Masonic Hall in Soane Street, Ipswich on the last Wednesday of each month for lunch, followed by talks and lectures on a variety of subjects. In addition we hold social events including outside visits when we invite our spouses, partners and friends to join us.

Last month I did say we had planned to visit Laurel Farm on June 27 and I would comment on it this month. Fourteen club members attended and, in spite of it being one of the hottest days of the year, they enjoyed the visit. We were accommodated in a large marquee and welcomed a cold drink, followed by a variety of sandwiches and some excellent homemade scones. I must confess that most of us did not venture outside in the sun to see the plants for sale, although a few items were purchased in the shop. Overall it was a very enjoyable visit and we left around 4.30pm.

If membership appeals to you, please contact our secretary, Ken Stanley, for further details: 01473 274898 / probus174@gmail.com

BELSTEAD VILLAGE MONTHLY MARKETS A market is set to take place in Belstead Village Hall from 9am-noon on the first Saturday of every month to raise vital funds to support refurbishment of the kitchen and ladies toilet.

This month (July as I write) we shall be having Fiona Ginn to talk about the work of St Elizabeth’s Hospice and on August 29 we look forward to a fish and chip lunch at the club (an event that proved popular last year). Looking further ahead, our secretary has suggested a meal out in September, the date and venue to be decided. I know many of you are hoping for some cooler weather – I agree it would be nice to have some rain, preferably at night. Our gardens need it and so do the farmers; however, as I write these notes, the children have not broken up for their school holidays!

With an extensive range of tables, a raffle and refreshments, the market is the perfect place to meet with friends for a chat over a cuppa and a piece of cake while supporting this essential local amenity.

John Bates

You can also support Macmillan who will have a table laden with homemade goodies for sale.

COUNTRY RAMBLES Due to the hot weather, we have not gone too far. We walked in Chantry Park, keeping under the trees whenever possible, and another time we walked along the seashore at Felixstowe. We enjoyed the wind off of the sea. Weather permitting, we hope to walk on Sunday, August 12, meeting at the church at 2pm, and on Tuesday, August 28, again meeting at the church at 10am. Destinations are not yet decided upon. D.B.

SCHOOLS CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL As you read this article, we are all busy enjoying the summer holidays. However, the last few weeks of the term, were filled with activities and events with many taking advantage of the lovely weather.

On June 27 and 28 we held our eagerly awaited production of the musical Madagascar. I would like to say a big congratulations and thank you to not only our very talented students, but also to all those people who gave up valuable time to support with backstage, refreshments, front of house, costumes, hair and make-up, props and scenery. It was great to see all your hard work and weeks of rehearsals culminating in stunning performances across two nights. The singing, dancing, acting and comedy moments were superb! Sincere thanks also to families for their support and to those who came to watch the show, we hope you enjoyed it. On July 5, 64 Year 9 and 10 students took part in a residential, three day Battlefield Tour of Ypres and The Somme to commemorate the Great War Centenary. Students visited the key battlefield sites and museums and took part in the Last Post Ceremony held at the Menin Gate, where two students laid a wreath on behalf of Claydon High School at this famous memorial for the soldiers who have no known grave. On July 18, the PE department hosted its annual Sports Award Evening. Celebrations got off to a brilliant start with certificates awarded to students in Years 7-10 for Endeavour, Excellence and Team Sports with the awards culminating in a trophy for Claydon High School’s Sports Personality of the Year. The winner of this special award was nominated and voted for by students in a secret ballot. It was a lovely evening celebrating so many individual and team sporting achievements across the year. The afternoon of July 23 saw the school’s annual Headteacher’s Celebration, which is held in order to celebrate those students who have been awarded four or more Headteacher Awards on their school reports and those who have 100 per cent attendance throughout the year. I am delighted that more than 250 students were eligible for invitations. In other areas of the school: we have held a GCSE Art Exhibition; Year 9 Design and Technology students visited Cadbury World to look at the design, manufacture and marketing of chocolate products and also took part in a skills day in school with a visiting woodturner; Art and Textiles students visited the Cambridge Botanical Gardens to get inspiration from the wonderful flora and fauna on display; Year 10 students took part in an enterprise language day; a taster day at Suffolk One Sixth Form College; Food Technology students visited London for a walking food tour; they then finished the term experiencing the exciting world of work on their Work Experience placement. Finally, the PE department held a very successful Sports Day, with four school records broken! I would like take this opportunity to thank colleagues who will be leaving Claydon High School for pastures new come September and welcome new teachers who will be joining us for what I hope is another very successful year. If you would like to visit the school and see us in action, please telephone my PA, Ms J Saunders on 01473 836110 to book a place on one of our open mornings in the autumn term. Details for organisations and activities in Sproughton

CLAYDON PRE-SCHOOL Well hasn’t this school year gone fast! It’s hard to believe that the summer holidays are already here. This summer term was very busy for both staff and children. The children have enjoyed lots of fun activities including their trip to the Oasis Camel Park, sports day and their summer party. A big thank you to everyone who came to our summer fete to help support the pre-school; we raised a huge £483.

Every week the lorry comes round and empties our wheelie bins. Each day we take our rubbish and refill the recycle or the rubbish bin. If not life in the home becomes less bearable, the risk of disease increases and the smell is unpleasant. Waste collection is an essential of everyday life and has been so since the beginning. We need these workers.

The children have also been growing lots of vegetables in our nature garden, which flourished due to the lovely sunny weather, as well as taking full advantage of the shade while it was so hot outside. We all enjoyed eating the crops for snack! We have said goodbye to some of our children who are moving on to reception and nursery and wish them well as they move on with their education – we will miss them! We managed to take some lovely graduation photos for their families as a keepsake of their time at the pre-school. As we are now open all year (except bank holidays and the Christmas period), we can take children up to five years old for additional sessions during the school holiday weeks, subject to availability. If you would like to book any days during the holidays, please contact the administration assistant for more details. We can take children who are entitled to 30 hours funding. Simply register at Childcare Choices to see if you are eligible. If you would like an application form or any further information please contact Lisa Read: Claydon Pre-school, Old Scout Hut, Thornhill Road, Claydon IP6 0DZ / admin@claydonpreschool.co.uk /01473 831648

Life produces waste, but there is other waste that we live better without that Mid Suffolk District Council does not take away. Every day we produce anger and bitterness, we use people and damage each other in the process. It’s rubbish that needs taking away! In the Bible we learn that we need an initial turning to Jesus to take away our rubbish, and to ask him to take over and begin to change us. But there is a continual turning to Jesus too, a daily collection of our rubbish in confession and renewed dependence on Jesus to live a less waste producing life.

The guilt of our life waste, that anger, bitterness and abuse can be cleared out, and Jesus leaves strength to deal with the damage we have done, a growing humility and love. Take a look at 1 John chapter 1 and read from verse 5 to verse 2 of chapter 2. You can read it online https://www.biblegateway.com or come and take one of our New Testaments.

CHURCH NEWS THE NORTH SAMFORD BENEFICE Sproughton with Burstall, Copdock with Washbrook and Belstead and Bentley with Tattingstone FOR PARISH QUERIES PLEASE CONTACT: The Rev Annette Shannon, The Rectory, Glebe Close, Sproughton, Ipswich IP8 3BQ revannettes@aol.co.uk / 01473 807674 Benefice Administrator Hayley Purnell, northsamfordbenefice@gmail.com / 07904 972116 Dear Friends, As this is a time for holidays and summer fun, I thought I would give the Ministry Team a break from writing the pastoral letter this month and take it over myself. I have recently been provided with some space as a base in Sproughton Church Hall so that I can stay within the benefice on Tuesdays, store my files and photocopy materials. It is different from working at home, as I have done for the last four years. At first it was daunting to leave the flexibility that working from home gave me, but I have found the move to be beneficial for many reasons, working closer to those in the Benefice and better time management being the most obvious. My role within the Benefice is varied and interesting and my work load has grown significantly since the opening of our two new wedding venues in Copdock and Belstead. I deal with all the paperwork regarding weddings, funerals and baptisms and deal with all of the invoicing. When I was researching Bible passages regarding working for God, I came up with quite a few but I have chosen Colossians 3:23 to start with, as I think it sums up what we all do when we are working for God: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters”. I like this passage for the passion it exudes and I do ensure whatever I do within my work remit, and also in my life, I do it with passion and dedication. However, it isn’t just the administration of weddings, but a whole host of responsibilities which the Benefice administrator has. The Benefice diary is kept up-to-date and information from the six parishes is circulated to ensure the whole Benefice is working together, sharing information about events and diary dates on the pew sheets every Sunday and on parish noticeboards. The administrator is also responsible for the Benefice account and for printing any service sheets the Benefice may require for special services. As well as taking minutes at churchwarden’s meetings, dealing with quarterly returns for the Benefice and obviously the content for this magazine. This is just a flavour of my role. I think the thing I love most about my position is being the central point of contact for enquiries from couples wishing to be married, the ministry team or parishioners. It is very rewarding arranging and booking a wedding for a couple and then later seeing the same couple booking in for a baptism. It is lovely to be witness to their life journey. I would like to sign off with another quote, this time from Proverbs 12:11: “Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense”. This to me means that if you work hard and do what is right in your life, and do not stray from your individual faith, you will be rewarded.
