A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Now don’t tell my boss, but on Tuesday mornings when I arrive at work before A Life Scientific on BBC Radio 4 has ended, I’m forced to sit in the car until it does. Professor Jim Al-Khalili talks to leading scientists about their life and work, finding out what inspires and motivates them. I particularly loved his interview with Eugenia Cheng on the mathematics of mathematics. Though it was never my strongest subject, I continue to love maths, desperate to understand and to find the right answer, though I seldom do. What’s extraordinary about many of the people featured on A Life Scientific is how often a childhood interest or passion has led to a fulfilling career and it’s clear that doing something you love is a wonderful privilege. I’ll be playing the podcasts to my son when he’s a little older because whatever he does in life I want it to be what makes him happy. You may have read about the letter a teacher in Singapore sent to parents the week before her students were to sit exams. Here’s a short extract: “I know you are all really anxious for your child to do well. But, please do remember, amongst the students who will be sitting for the exams there is an artist who doesn’t need to understand math, an entrepreneur who doesn’t care about history or English literature, a musician whose chemistry marks won’t matter. There’s an athlete whose physical fitness is more important than physics. If your child does get top marks, that’s great, but if he or she doesn’t please don’t take away their self-confidence and dignity. Tell them no matter what they score you love them and will not judge them. Please do this and when you do, watch your children conquer the world. One exam or a low mark won’t take that away. And please don’t think that doctors and engineers are the only happy people in the world.” I hope you have or have had the opportunity to do what you love and that you can inspire others to do likewise. Driving to work at 6am on a cold January morning is never easy, but it’s a whole lot easier if you’re looking forward to the day ahead.

SPROUGHTON VILLAGE FETE – AN URGENT APPEAL FOR HELP Sproughton Village Fete has become a major attraction in the social life of our village over the past few years. This year’s fete will be on Sunday, June 24, starting as normal at noon. We urgently need more helpers to come forward to assist with both the setting up and dismantling of marquees, tables, stalls, etc. To make things a bit easier for ourselves on the Sunday morning, we’re going to put up as much tentage as we can on the Saturday afternoon, June 23. Hopefully, this will mean that more people are able to help, if only for an hour or two on either day. Please call or text me on 07578 552324 if you are willing to help in any capacity. Without the practical help and support of a few more people in the village, the future of our fete may be at risk, so please, please do your bit. We would be very grateful. Ken Seager
TENTH SPROUGHTON BEER FESTIVAL – May 12-13 Date for your diaries. This year is our 10th festival; the first was in 2009 and they have gone from strength-to strength-ever since. It is on the calendar of festivals for the dedicated beer enthusiasts and has received plaudits from many CAMRA members. It is brought to you by Sproughton Parish Council. This year, the festival is to be held over the weekend of May 12/13 at Sproughton Tithe Barn. More details in the May edition of In Touch. It will be of the same format as previous years: family disco in the Tithe Barn on Friday, May 11 and the festival opening at noon on Saturday 12 and closing at 10.30pm on Sunday 13. FUNDRAISING COFFEE MORNING Burstall Village Hall on Saturday, March 17, 10am-12 .30pm Delicious homemade cakes and fresh tea and coffee, served on beautiful vintage china. Do come along and join us and find out more about this vital Suffolk charity. Fresh Start – New Beginnings is a charity working across Suffolk and Norfolk, set up to help child victims of sexual abuse and their families recover from the associated trauma. We provide one-to-one therapy to the child victims as well as groups for children and their carers. Fresh Start – New Beginnings use a clinically evaluated treatment model which is proven to help children recover from the guilt, blame and shame many feel following sexual abuse. The children are offered a safe place to unravel their thoughts and fears with a worker who will not judge or be shocked by what they hear. The children are helped to process their abuse and given strategies to deal with the effects of the abuse. The charity’s vision is ‘to ensure all children and young people who are the victims of sexual abuse have the opportunity to access help, advice guidance and therapeutic intervention to aid their recovery’. In Suffolk, Fresh Start – New Beginnings get some statutory funding (Health and Police) but this only covers half of the costs. The charity has so far received over 980 referrals and our service is free at the point of delivery. www.fsnb.org.uk

As a responsible dog owner, myself and others in Sproughton village have recently been outraged by the thoughtless and disgusting actions of probably a single local (?) dog owner who seems to think it’s acceptable to bag up dog poop and then sling it into the brambles at the bottom of the footpath which runs from the playing field across the meadows to the metal gate onto Church Lane.

As the vegetation has died back over winter, these nasty bags have been revealed, festooning the bushes with their ghastly contents. Who in their right mind would believe that nature/the weather/time would somehow get rid of these plastic bags and make it acceptable to dispose of dog waste in this way? What’s more unbelievable is the fact that someone is prepared to bag up the waste, but then not spend another 30 seconds walking to the dog bin located only yards away on Church Lane!

Rather than complain and do nothing about it, myself and some like-minded friends spent an hour retrieving all of these horrid bags – between 50 and 60 in number – and disposing of them properly. The total haul weighed in at a shocking 5.4kg!

I have since spoken to Keith Jones at Babergh/Mid-Suffolk Environmental Protection (0300 123 4000) and sadly there seems little he can do, but he did suggest the following if anyone happens to see the perpetrator in action. DO NOT confront him/her. Get a description of the perpetrator, but DO NOT take a photograph of him/her. DO take a photo of the exact item thrown. Get a car number plate or the address to which the person goes. Note date and time of the incident. Report it to Keith on the number above. Please don’t let this thoughtless individual bring all the decent and responsible dog owners of Sproughton into disrepute; let’s see if a bit of community watchfulness and action, as outlined above, can bring an end to this disgusting behaviour. What we do know so far is that this person has a large dog, a preference for pale blue/clear waste bags and, judging by the amount of bags we found, walks this footpath very regularly! Come and have a look around The Suffolk energy-from-waste facility is holding a series of open days, which will include a tour of the facility and time to explore our visitor centre. Places are currently available on the following days:

Book your school for a visit The new term is now in full swing, so it’s a great time for schools to come and visit our specially designed visitor centre and have a site tour. Classes of up to 30 students in Key Stage 2 and above can come to the site and explore how we make good use of Suffolk’s waste! During the tour we explore topics across the science curriculum including materials, units and states of matter and highlight the use of science in the workplace. We can also tailor visits to suit the topics you’re covering in school, meaning the experience is suitable for students in Key Stage 2 all the way up to university level. EASTER BRIC-A-BRAC SALE 1st Sproughton Brownies are holding their Easter Bric-a-Brac Sale in Sproughton Church Hall on Saturday, March 24, from 2-4pm. The sale is in aid of Save the Children, HOPS (Holiday Opportunity Play Scheme for children with disabilities in Suffolk) and brownie funds. Stalls will include bric-a-brac, toys, books, next-to-new, clothes, games, cakes, tombola, a draw and refreshments. Please come and support us and get a bargain. Every welcome; admission free.

Our ancient forbearers appeared to have lived around the River Gipping and several sites have been found in the parish. From an East Anglian archaeology report No. 3 SCC 1976 we read that a Neolithic site by the River Gipping on the island was discovered. There are several barbed points found nearby. There appeared to be several other ancient sites in this area. D Bradbury

NEWS SPROUGHTON COMMUNITY SHOP: Something for everyone Last month we had a wonderful volunteer’s ‘do’. It was a Christmas party, quiz and thank you to our loyal volunteers all rolled into one. We had a great time; there was much food and a lot of laughter. So you non-volunteers out there, especially if you have a little free time, just see what you are missing. New helpers for the shop are always welcome and there are a wide range of tasks. Being on the till is not essential if the idea scares you; there are plenty of other things that need doing. Easter is fast approaching and the shop will have Easter eggs, cards and
a raffle thanks to Fastracker Cars and Vans, as well as all the other usual goodies. There are also early daffodils and other plants available. There is excellent local meat available both in the shop and to order so if you are planning a special Easter meal or just want to try something new do call in. Don’t forget we do a good local laundry and dry cleaning service, just drop in the items and they we arrive back pristine. After much discussion we have decided to slightly alter our opening times. From March 1 they will be: Monday to Friday 9am-5pm / Saturday 9.30am-12.30pm Sunday 10am-noon I don’t know about you, but I am so looking forward to spring, warmer weather and some sunshine, all of which helps to raise the spirits. CHICKEN IN RED WINE From time to time Sproughton Community Shop offers frozen meats at a generous discount – 25% at this writing – a good deal by anyone’s standards! The selection usually includes lamb, pork, beef and chicken, raised somewhere within a low-carbon footprint away for ecology, quality and taste. An elegant yet easy-to-prepare dish with regard to these delectable chickens of high standard (who shall remain nameless) is simply Chicken in Red Wine. Open your pocketbook to savings, and your mouth to a taste of luxury. Come to the shop with something for everyone, where you will find most, if not all the ingredients for this dish: Sproughton Community Shop. Recipe ½ a medium onion A good handful of button mushrooms or 1-2 Portobello mushrooms, cleaned and chopped 1 dismembered chicken – around 1kg 1-2 Tbsp butter or margarine 1 bay leaf 1 large pinch tarragon 4 peppercorns A few sprigs fresh parsley 1 good pinch of salt

250ml dry red wine 1Tbsp (or less) flour 1Tbsp butter or margarine 2Tbsp chopped parsley Sauté bacon until crispy and remove from pan into another dish. Fry onions and mushrooms quickly in the hot fat and add to the bacon pieces when soft. Set aside. Have the chicken ready (washed and patted dry) to brown in the hot fat, to which butter has been added, and, once browned, add the bacon, onions and mushrooms. Using a clean cloth, make a bouquet garni with the herbs and spices (Not the salt), and set in the pan alongside the chicken. Add salt to the wine, and pour over chicken. Simmer all this for roughly 25 minutes, more or less, until chicken is tender. Remove the bouquet garni. Blend the flour and butter together in a cup or small bowl, and slowly add a little juice at a time to form a paste. Pour back in slowly, stirring the while as it heats and thickens to your own taste. Adjust seasonings before serving, hot and bubbly, with fresh parsley sprigs sprinkled on top. Enjoy! . SnOasis PARISH ALLIANCE (SPA) In the autumn of 2016, Onslow Suffolk Ltd put in an application to Mid Suffolk District Council for SnOasis Reserved Matters to be considered – Planning Application no. 4494/16. Full details can be found at: www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/planning-and-building/planning It is important to be aware that this is not a renewal of the original planning approval for SnOasis, which remains in place. Reserved Matters cover the detail of such topics as design, appearance, transport, drainage and ecological mitigation. Our questions and comments about Reserved Matters were summarised in a document which was submitted to MSDC in the summer as the comments from the SPA and all it’s member parishes, giving the comments extra weight because they come from a significant number of local communities, representing over 11,000 registered voters. The SPA member parishes are Baylham, Barham, Bramford, Claydon and Whitton, Great Blakenham, Little Blakenham, Needham Market, Nettlestead and Somersham. As you are no doubt aware, Onslow Suffolk has finally submitted the missing information for the SnOasis Reserved Matters application. By the time you read this, the deadline of February 2 will have passed and comments from residents will no longer be accepted. Now this stage is over, the council’s planning committee will be considering the application. At the time of writing, no date has been announced for this. Whatever the outcome, the SPA will continue to monitor the progress of the application and activities at the site. We will keep the focus on the needs and concerns of residents who will be affected by whatever eventually happens with the site. To this end we have arranged a meeting in mid-February with the planning team to consider the responses by the developer to the queries we raised on the Reserved Matters and also to plan a way forward that brings the most benefits for local residents. BRAMFORD COMPUTER CLUB In March the group will meet on Wednesdays 7, 14 and 21 from 10am-noon in the upstairs room of Bramford Methodist Church. Entry is by the second door on the right-hand side of the building. The club will be closed from March 28 for the Easter holidays and will meet again on Wednesday, April 18. The primary objective is to provide fellowship between members and to share similar interests in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We meet monthly at the Masonic Hall in Soane Street, Ipswich on the last Wednesday of each month for lunch, followed by talks and lectures on a variety of subjects. NEWS / OUT & ABOUT BRAMFORD GUIDE & SCOUT HEADQUARTERS NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT Bramford Guide & Scout HQ on Ship Lane in Bramford has been the HQ for Guides and Scouts in the village since the 1980s when the parish council gave them permission to use the old Bramford Primary School. The parish council is responsible for the up-keep and maintenance of the exterior of the building and the Guide and Scout Groups are responsible for the inside. As a charity we currently have six volunteers who are responsible for management of the building, including fundraising. However, there are some areas of the HQ that need refurbishment to bring it up to spec. We have identified the following: replacement kitchen, refurbishment of boys and girls toilets including provision of a disabled toilet, renewing skirting tiles around the main hall, repainting of the HQ throughout and some sound proofing to improve acoustics in the main hall. We anticipate that this work will cost approximately £12,000 to enable us to meet the needs of everyone who uses the building. We have £3,000 so need to raise a further £9,000. We are currently looking into grants under S106 and the Community Infrastructure Levy plus MSDC and SCC locality funding. If anyone is able to support this project in any way, either with knowledge
Mothering Sunday is March 11 and we’re offering lunch from noon-4pm. Book early to avoid disappointment! March heralds a busy time at the Duke of Marlborough with the launch of our events programme. Every Wednesday there will be something different going on, something interesting and entertaining for you to get involved with. The idea is to feature particular types of events on each of the four Wednesdays in a month. There will be a quiz, something music based, a food and drink related event and a charity night. Small bricks will be available for £30 each or businesses can advertise their services on larger bricks for £60. • Car wash on Sunday, April 29 with refreshments including bacon rolls, homemade cakes and beverages, so please spread the word and send all your friends and family to get their cars, vans and motorbikes cleaned by section members between 10am to 3pm. • Duck Race on July 7 at the annual village fun day. SPROUGHTON SENIOR CITIZENS’ CLUB Last month I stated the 2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on April 18 with the usual local meal out beforehand. I can now confirm that lunch will be taken at the Chequers Inn, Great Blakenham at noon for 12.30pm. The AGM will be a short affair, mainly to elect a new committee.
CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL Despite last half term being very short, we have been busy with various trips, visits and activities including debating and student leadership training, as well as some successful sporting achievements in cross-country and athletics. At the end of January, in preparation for their upcoming exam, Year 11 GCSE Art students visited the Tate Modern in London, getting inspiration from the many artists on display as well as enjoying the fantastic panoramic view of central London from the viewing floor. The set exam theme for this year is Fragments so students focussed on pieces that were fragmented, broken or dismantled, taking photograph and making sketches to use as inspiration for their own work. On February 5 a group of students were joined by a fantastic band from Guildford called Kissed and Crowned and a team from IEM (Industry Education in Music) to take part in a rock band workshop and concert. Students from across all year groups split into groups to form eight separate ’bands’ and spent the day composing original pop music from scratch. With a very tight deadline this was a huge challenge, but our talented students worked extremely hard, using advice and guidance from the professionals to come up with some impressive and original material that was performed at a concert on the very same evening. Year 11 continue to prepare for their exams and on February 23 and 24, 110 students travelled to the Outdoors Centre in East Mersea to take part in an intense GCSE Bootcamp. This overnight event was a chance for Year 11 students to get together to learn vital revision strategies to take away with them, as well as taking part in structured Maths and English revision within a classroom setting and enjoying some outdoor challenges, such as the climbing wall, assault course and high ropes. It was really good fun (despite the mud and chilly temperatures!) and the revision process should now start in earnest. We have a small but dedicated PTA committee who work tirelessly for the benefit of the school and our students. They have organised a quiz night on Thursday, March 22, 7-9pm. I will never forget the incredible experience of my first Easter when I made the spiritual journey through Holy Week. I felt a range of emotions – from the joy of the Passover meal, the moving intimacy of the foot washing and the arresting scene of the altar being stripped in dignified silence on Maundy Thursday, to the depths of sadness on Good Friday to the most extraordinary joy of Easter Day. Sometimes when we look at the challenges faced by the church we can fear it simply and quietly dying. We forget the Easter message. The average age of our church congregation has increased so that it is much higher than the average age of the UK population. If we manage to replace all those who leave the church, we will still decline as a large proportion of our current membership comes to the end of their lives. Forty per cent of our clergy are due to retire within the next 10 years. Faced with this reality, one approach would be to dig our heads in the sand and pretend that decline wasn’t happening or that it doesn’t matter. As an Easter people we simply daren’t do this! Thus the General Synod of the Church of England initiated an ambitious programme of ‘Reform and Renewal’ altering the way in which central church funds are distributed to address areas of deprivation and possibilities for growth to increase the number of candidates for ordained ministry by 50%, and to simplify the process of church planting. But ‘renewal’ is not something that can be programmed or managed centrally. Renewal happens personally and locally. It is in our local congregations that lives are touched by the love of Jesus. It is through personal friendship and invitation that people come to know and follow God. It is in the gathering for worship of our local communities that minds are challenged and hearts. I am deeply thankful to all our clergy and lay people who will be involved in the preparation and conduct of worship for Holy Week and Easter. I pray especially for those who will be endeavouring to communicate the Easter message in ways that will connect with regular churchgoers and visitors alike. We have a great story to tell and a wonderful song to sing! Please do come and listen. Considering that life has a 100% mortality rate is there anything more interesting than the resurrection of Jesus? Those first disciples were witnesses to a risen Jesus, whom they had abandoned to crucifixion. For them it was both shocking and life transforming. He had told them ‘I am the resurrection and the life’1, then had demonstrated the reality of his claim!
Hopefully by the time you read this we will be through the worst of the winter, and spring will be upon us!
This resurrection has given succeeding generations of people grounds for believing in and following Jesus. He has freed his people from the chains and consequences of sin and broken the power of death. Because of what he has done he offers eternal life to all who abandon their own schemes and trust to him. Heartfelt and lifelong worship to him, who is not only Son of God but also Lord of life, is a fitting response for all who have sensed and turned to Jesus in faith. It is the resurrection that makes the Church a worshipping community. You are welcome to join our regular meetings of worship and fellowship. While most sensible people have been hibernating, the work on our green continues and all is looking good for the opening weekend. Members will also note that the clubhouse has also received some TLC during the closed season, so another big thank you to all involved. The green will be officially opened by club president June Laws on Saturday, April 21 and this will be followed by our opening day competition for the Sheila Herring Cup. The following day, Sunday 22, will see competition for the Club Blocks Trophy. Please make sure you get your entries in early as both days are always popular as it is the first opportunity to dust off the outdoor gear (hopefully not waterproofs and woollies) after a long winter. These will be followed by outdoor friendlies against Copdock & Washbrook on Tuesday 24, Woodbridge on Wednesday 25 and East Bergholt on Thursday 26 before the league season gets underway the following week.
