NEWS

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Gosh life is a juggling act sometimes. I find myself running from one responsibility to the other at such a ferocious pace these days I wish I didn’t need to sleep and could use those hours to catch up instead. Add something extra to the mix, such as making an Iron Age costume for school, sewing on Beaver badges, ordering a guitar case which has no chance of arriving on time, feeding the neighbour’s chickens while they are away... well I don’t know which way to turn. But I cope, perhaps not to everyone’s satisfaction, least of all my own, and treasure the moments when I can hit the pause button, take a deep breath and just stop.

CHRISTMAS CRAFT AND GIFT FAIR

Everything we do to relax has involved some degree of work or stress for someone else, whether it’s watching a movie (consider how many hours of planning and effort go into making a 10 second clip of a movie like Moana) or going to the football (imagine the paperwork required to run an Under 8 football team), but when I snuggle up on the sofa or sit on the side of the pitch with a nice cup of tea I really don’t care. It’s my turn to escape. I’m ashamed to admit I’m equally selfish when it comes to many local events. Of course I want them to happen, but I want to enjoy the experience without any of the responsibility.

Refreshments and food will be available on the day. Free entry, all welcome. Tombola items, both children’s and adults, would be greatly received and can be left at the community shop from October 21.

Thank goodness there are others who are far less selfish than I. Presumably they find other ways to escape, but as you read through this month’s edition consider those who do make things happen, who open village halls, who schedule speakers, who organise fundraising events, who make the calls, send the emails, get the quotes, who cajole and harangue others to help, who take the minutes, boil the kettles, buy the biscuits, put up the posters, complete the funding applications... These are the people who provide moments of escape and fun and togetherness for the rest of us to enjoy. One day soon I will raise my hand and get more involved, but right now I need to make a torque!

NEWS SPROUGHTON ALMSHOUSE AND RELIEF IN NEED CHARITY Have you ever considered being a trustee of your local charity? The original foundation of the Almshouses here in Sproughton dates back to July 8, 1618 when Elizabeth Bull established a charity for poor spinsters and widows of the parish. Of course, circumstances have vastly changed over the centuries, but the charity is still strong and fully recognised by the Charity Commission. If you would like to know more about the charity and about the procedures, responsibilities and duties of being a trustee, please contact Ken Sheppard: 01473 743122

BURSTALL BOOK SALE The recent book sale in aid of Bumblebee Children’s Charity was a great success, raising £200. Many thanks to all who contributed by donating or buying books and for their assistance on the day. Special thanks go to our wonderful caterers, Ann and Teresa, who made the day with the vintage style teas which gave everyone an excuse to relax and while away a pleasant hour chatting to friends and neighbours. CHURCH HALL EXTENSION LATEST The outer cladding, roof and walls are now in position which is just as well with all the rain we are getting at the moment. The old corrugated iron to the front of the hall has now been removed to allow the link-up to be made; with the first fix electrics and the inner linings with insulation installed, all ready for the floor to be cast. All ahead of schedule. These improvements will enhance the amenities of this hall for the village and the surrounding area. We are now planning the official opening, see the attached picture and watch this space!

NEWS SPROUGHTON PARISH COUNCIL REPORT The last full council meeting was held on Wednesday, September 13. Draft and agreed minutes can be found at www.sproughton.onesuffolk.net/parish-council and on the noticeboards on the village green (Lower Street) and Hadleigh Road. The next scheduled meeting is on Wednesday, October 11 at 7.30pm in the Barley Room at Sproughton Tithe Barn. Meetings normally conclude by 9pm. Members of the public are always welcome to attend. Our County Councillor Christopher Hudson and District Councillors Nicholas Ridley and Barry Gasper are normally in attendance to give reports of their council’s recent activities and to answer queries and questions. These are public meetings and parishioners are more than welcome to attend. VACANCIES FOR PARISH COUNCILLORS There are currently six councillor seats remaining vacant on the council. It is likely that, the council will consider the co-option of a parishioner who has come forward to serve as a councillor at the October meeting. We look forward to welcoming them and hope that it may inspire others within the community to come forward as well. GRANTS AWARDED BY THE PARISH COUNCIL The council can award grants to organisations which directly benefit Sproughton residents. It sets a budget each year for this and makes awards under S137 of the Local Government Act. The budget allocated for 2017/2018 is £1,200. In past years requests for grants have been considered as and when the council receives them. For the current year, beginning 1 April 2017, the council decided that it will consider and make decisions on requests twice per year, at the April and October meetings. It will be happy to receive requests at any time of the year, but it will hold over the decision until the April or October meeting. COMMUNITY USE OF THE TITHE BARN The barn was given to the community by the previous owner for the parish council to become its owner, and responsible for its upkeep and use. It is available for hire, and because it was left to the community for community use, the council offers Sproughton residents and community groups reduced hire rates. In addition to this preferential offer, Sproughton community groups can apply to the parish council for a grant to help with hire costs if they require financial support. For details, please contact the parish clerk ADDITIONAL HOUSING IN SPROUGHTON Do you want to become part of Ipswich, merge with Bramford, see the loss of countryside or spend hours in traffic jams? If your answer is YES, then you don’t need to do anything, it’s on its way. If your answer is NO, then read on. We need your help, YOUR COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU.

public on their draft Joint Local Plan (JLP). The consultation period is August 21 to November 10. It’s a weighty document(s) which is published on their website. It’s difficult to access, but persevere and you will be ‘rewarded’ with an indication that there is every possibility that Sproughton will lose its village identity. In a nutshell, Babergh put out a call to landowners to identify areas of land that they would be willing to be considered for development. The ‘Gold Rush’ began and the JLP identifies seven or so sites in Sproughton for new housing. Sproughton currently has some 560 houses; the JLP identifies land which could accommodate in the order of 2,320 new houses in the village. Yes, 2,320! This figure represents in the order of 30% of Babergh’s housing needs up to the year 2036. What about the impact of this? There is no new road infrastructure identified to deal with the inevitable huge increase in traffic, and the proposals would see Sproughton expanding to about Bramford’s developed area, and Sproughton joining up with Ipswich. The charge of developers has already started and led by Hopkins Homes, who have recently consulted the community on proposals for 70 houses on land adjacent to Bramford Road/Sproughton Hall. Even Sproughton allotments have been offered up by the land owner (that’s not the parish council, we only rent the land for allotments) for 84 houses. Are you concerned? Sproughton Parish Council is holding a public meeting in the Tithe Barn on Wednesday, October 4 at 7.30pm to get your views on the JLP proposals and formulate a response to the current consultation which ends on November 10. Please come along. The parish council will go through the consultation material and explain the more significant parts and hopefully enable residents to put together their own comments to Babergh. Now is the time to act. Chairman Simon Curl: 01473 747114 Clerk Sue Frankis: 01473 463852 / pc@sproughton.suffolk.gov.uk Please call between 9am and 5pm weekdays only. In an emergency outside these hours you can contact the chairman. NEWS Dear Editor, It was very interesting to read the names of those who were sadly killed or wounded during the First World War in 1917 in the September In Touch. I would like to add to that list Mr Frederick Charles Beeston who fought in the battle of La Beque in France. He with two mates went ‘over the top’; they were killed and Mr Beeston was wounded having a knuckle blown away. He survived but nearly lost his life again catching pneumonia while recuperating in Leeds infirmary. He was one of the Yorkshire Pals and enlisted at 17 years of age. He was born in Hadleigh, but lived in Chantry Row, Sproughton and was fostered by Mr and Mrs Archer after his parents both died when he was around five years of age. He went on to marry my aunt, Rosy Mee, and lived in Sproughton until in his 90s. Mr Beeston was asked to work at Jacobs Mill (now The Shed) the firm building him a special office, but he chose to go to Needham Market to a larger mill where I think he was responsible for bringing in a crop from the USA to make beer. The family intend to make a journey to La Beque, France where he fought after he had done some time in Ypres. Next year on June 28 will be the 100th anniversary since he was there. FROM THE ARCHIVES A lady in the village was tidying her cupboards recently and came across a booklet called Bibby’s Quarterly dated Autumn 1900. She very wisely asked a gentleman in the village what she should so with it. He suggested that perhaps I might be interested in it. The booklet appears to be by Bibbys who dealt with animal foods and how to look after animals. There were several photographs of animals that were looked after by Mr Arthur Pratt of The Hall, Sproughton. There was ‘The Squire’, a good specimen of a Suffolk Stallion that had won first prize and the Champion Cup at Richmond in 1899. Mr Pratt reported that he gave the animal a pound or two of Bibby Cake occasionally to improve its skin. There was a picture of shorthorn dairy cows fed on Bibby Cake by Arthur Pratt, a flock of sheep fed on Bibbys by Mr Pratt and photos of animals all over Britain that were given Bibby Cake. There were many chapters on ways to look after animals and other items of farming interest. Thank you very much for the book. I have photocopied the pages concerning the hall for the village records. If anyone else has anything old about the village please let me know. Village Recorder Doreen Bradbury

SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM Once again yet another month has rushed past and the year is running steadily onwards towards autumn and winter. As was mentioned last month, please do leave a light on when you go out; it’s getting darker earlier in the evenings now and it’s really obvious when no one is at home. And do remember to close and lock your windows and doors when out and that includes the windows upstairs. I know it sounds like we are nagging, but the alternative could be a lot of heartbreak, time and money. This month we appear to be having a few fly tipping incidents around some of the villages and in some of the more remote locations away from the villages and main roads. It’s very unsightly and sometimes a health hazard to the public and animals in the area so I would urge you to contact Babergh District Council to report any fly tipping if found or if seen being dumped to the Environmental Department. If you see people fly tipping – and if it is safe to do so – take the index mark and make/type of vehicle, but do not place yourself in a position of danger or possible conflict. Do report the time and place and any details taken to the council. Hopefully if the culprits can be found we can nip this one in the bud and stop others from doing the same. Now we come to gardens and the autumn rush to clear up and beautify before the rain and ice turn up during the next couple of months. Please lock away your mowers and tools; they are expensive and will cost you time, effort and money to replace if stolen. Fit a decent padlock and make sure you use it! Chain your mowers to something substantial and fit a shed alarm. Mark your tools and photograph them, and don’t forget to record the serial numbers, makes and model numbers as it helps us to find them if they do get stolen. You will need all these details if you do have to claim, so it’s best practise to have them to hand if you have to make a claim or tell us. Have a great month. ADVERTORIAL FENCING TO BE PROUD OF After 30 years in the timber trade, Charles Simpson decided to start his own business. On discovering Colourfence and replacing his mother’s wooden fence and gate with a Colourfence he became a franchisee. Ten years later, the fence still looks great and Colourfence in Suffolk is more popular than ever.

“I have seen almost every combination of soil, slope, height, colour and style imaginable and whilst not every site is suitable for Colourfence the vast majority are. Add ColourRail and our matching gates into the mix and we can transform front and back gardens so you never have to paint another fence.”

Now with more than 700 fence installations under his belt, Charles believes that Colourfence is the best general garden fencing product on the market today.

Colourfence is durable, strong, secure, versatile and good value with no ongoing maintenance costs. Find out more at www.colourfence.co.uk/Suffolk where you will also find lots of pictures and client testimonials.

“Let me explain the magic behind Colourfence and our famous 25 year guarantee. Colourfence is durable, treated steel with a finish that gives you rich, long lasting colour and prevents rotting, warping and peeling with just an annual hose down. What’s more, once fitted the fence withstands wind gusts up to 130mph so no more fence panels flapping around after a storm “And not only is our product great, our service is too. Our goal is to give you fencing that is attractive and remains fit for purpose without costly and time consuming annual treatments. To give you the best possible customer experience we offer national survey and fitting services via our fully trained franchise network rather than casual contractors. SPROUGHTON COMMUNITY SHOP: Something for everyone Our August meat special offer proved popular and at the time of writing the September offer of a free packet of cream crackers with every cheese purchase has already been taken up. So what’s in store for October? Apples of course! We shall be stocking several unusual varieties of English apples all sourced from orchards in Stowmarket. The old favourites of Egremont Russets and Coxes Orange Pippins will be available in quantity. When people travel from Cambridge to visit a food tasting at Sproughton Shop, and pronounce the journey worthwhile, then the feeling of confidence and pride among our volunteers is given a real boost. The event on Sunday, September 3 was a happy one, much food was consumed and much food was bought. It’s amazing how much local produce we can set out without having to search for ideas; breads, cakes, cheeses, bacon, sausages, pies quiches and pasties, yoghurt, honey, soft drinks… not to mention the fascinating display of new Traidcraft gifts and unusual foods. The smoked Freekeh was surprisingly popular! The event provided an opportunity for our regulars to try things of which they were unaware, and for our new tasters, we believe we have some converts to dry cured bacon and local sausages. Thank goodness the weather wasn’t too hot and it didn’t rain.

I’d like to mention Traidcraft again. Not only do we have a wide selection of new gifts available from the Autumn/Christmas Catalogue on display so that you can spread your Christmas present shopping over a longer period, but we are also offering the same arrangement as before. Place your order with us, and you will save your postage and packing costs. Don’t forget the Family Halloween Disco on Friday, October 27. Haunting begins at 7pm. For ghosties and ghoulies who are hungry there will be hot dogs and snacks. For those who are thirsty, soft drinks, beer and wines. As ever, I’d like to thank our faithful volunteers who bring so much to the community, and our customers. Rosalind Lavington www.sproughtoncommunityshop.co.uk / 01473 747768

AUTUMN DISH CELEBRATES SUFFOLK Since coming to Suffolk and learning about Boudica, I have often wondered if our ‘boudacious’ tables at harvest-time had anything to do with the Iceni Queen. It’s not a word heard in this country very often, but used often enough by the people who live in the back hills of America, living by the old means and ways, descendants of those who left hardship from Elizabethan times onward, taking new ways from outside world as little as possible. There are fewer and fewer of these people around as the modern world encroaches upon them, so I don’t hear the word that often any more. It describes a heavily laden table (over-the-top really) of as much delectable food, displayed in elegance, drink flowing, and an astonishing amount for the eye or stomach to take in. Perhaps that in itself is because we don’t hear that word very often. Suffolk is blessed to have such delectable and varied foods and drinks, and this recipe is intended to reflect the pleasure of Suffolk foods simply but elegantly. See if Sproughton Community Shop doesn’t supply it all, the shop with something for everyone. Enjoy!

PRUNE-STUFFED PORK POT ROAST 1 x 1½kg pork loin, boned ½pt stock 8oz prunes String 1 glass wine 1-2tbsp cream Soak the prunes for at least four hours, but preferably all night. Trim some but not all the exterior fat, leaving enough to brown. Stuff the prunes into the undersized of the loin, roll and tie with string. Brown on all sides, pour off any excess fat, and place a rack under the meat to avoid burning and to allow it to drip its juices. Add the stock. Place a lid on tightly and simmer for two hours. Remove the roast to a warm place and add wine to the drippings. Stir, simmering for two to three minutes, then add the cream. Serve the sauce separately and accompany the roast with browned potatoes and freshly made apple sauce on the side. Enjoy! Mary Bright Basan Questions or comments? mbb.101@hotmail.com

Our questions and comments about Reserved Matters were summarised in a document which was submitted to MSDC as the comments from the SPA and all its member parishes, giving the comments extra weight because they come from a significant number of local communities, representing over 11,000 registered voters. This is the list of SPA member parishes: Baylham, Barham, Bramford, Claydon and Whitton, Great Blakenham, Little Blakenham, Needham Market, Nettlestead and Somersham. The document is available to view on the Great Blakenham Parish Council website: http://greatblakenham.onesuffolk.net/snoasis-parish-alliance As reported in my last article, MSDC and the SPA have agreed that there will be regular meetings to discuss new or expanded information provided by the developer. This means that the communities who will be affected by the development will continue to be able to put forward their views on what will be the best possible outcomes for residents. The first meeting takes place at the end of September and the SPA looks forward to working with MSDC in a positive way so that any development on the site will take account of the requirements and concerns of local people.

SPROUGHTON SENIOR CITIZENS’ CLUB Although no connections with Sproughton, I cannot ignore referring to Hurricane IRMA and its murderous path across the Caribbean to mainland USA and also the Mexican earthquake which has claimed so many lives. One can also include the Muslim refugees from Myanmar making for Bangladesh. These events make one feel that Great Britain is a good place to be, in spite of any terrorist activity. Our club secretary has been busy looking at two outings – a lunch out on Wednesday, October 25 and a fish and chip lunch at the church hall on Wednesday, November 22. Both dates are provisional at this time. John Bates

OUT & ABOUT EAST SUFFOLK NATIONAL TRUST ASSOCIATION Our next meeting is on October 17 when John Field will be exploring the history of Ipswich Wet Dock and its impact on the town. John will follow the dock from its opening in 1842, covering its decline during the latter stages of the last century, and conclude by detailing the planning of the area to create arguably the most successful and exciting regeneration project between the Thames and the Humber. A must for all those interested in local history. We meet at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre (Twelve Acre Approach, Kesgrave IP5 1JF at 7.15pm. Visitors (even if not National Trust members) are welcome, entrance fee £3 each. National Trust members / volunteers can join us for £8 a year (£12 a couple at same address). We publish three newsletters a year for members and enjoy interesting day outings and other events. For more information, including details of future events and outings, contact our membership secretary – membershipesnta@gmail.com / 01473 723761 – or visit: www.membershipesnta.btck.co.uk

BRAMFORD COMPUTER CLUB The club will meet every week this month except the week beginning October 23 which is the school half-term holiday. Membership is £1 for the academic year and £3 per two-hour session. We have no structured programme, but are here to help you to get the best out of your computer. Why not give us a try?

POLYMYALGIA RHEUMATICA/GIANT CELL ARTERITIS SUPPORT GROUP The next meeting of the Polymyalgia Rheumatica/Giant Cell Arteritis East Anglia Support Group is on Friday, October 20 at Needham Market Community Centre (School Road, Needham Market IP6 8BB). The hall will be open at 10.30am for refreshments and an opportunity to meet others who experience the same problems as you. The speaker will be Professor Bhaskar Dasgupta, a world leading authority on PMR/GCA. His presentation will begin at 11am and he kindly takes a Q and A session afterwards. His talks are always very interesting and he brings us up to date with current research happening around the world. We look forward to seeing you there.

GREAT BLAKENHAM CRAFT CLUB The club is open to anyone living not just in Great Blakenham but anywhere in the surrounding area. We meet every Monday other than bank holidays in the Parish Room, Stowmarket Road, Great Blakenham from 2-4pm from February to December. The Parish Room is the building with a green door more or less opposite the Chequers Public House with its own parking area at the rear. It is fully accessible for anyone in a wheelchair and has disabled facilities within.

IPSWICH AND DISTRICT PROBUS CLUB Probus clubs are for retired or semi-retired business gentlemen. The primary objective is to provide fellowship between members and to share similar interests in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We meet monthly at the Masonic Hall in Soane Street, Ipswich on the last Wednesday of each month for lunch, followed by talks and lectures on a variety of subjects. In addition we hold social events including outside visits when we invite our spouses, partners and friends to join us. If membership appeals to you, please contact our secretary, Ken Stanley, for further details: probus174@gmail.com / 01473 274898

COUNTRY WALKS The group enjoyed their walks in August. For the Sunday walk we went from Melton along the River Deben towards Woodbridge and back. For the midweek walk the group walked through Bridge Wood to the River Orwell, along the shore towards Ipswich and climbed up the hill back to their cars. On Sunday, October 8, we shall meet at the church at 2pm and may visit Holy Wells Park in Ipswich. On Tuesday, October 17 we plan to leave the church at 10am, destination to be decided.

SUFFOLK DEMENTIA HELPLINE 01473 353350 We are here to help 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The helpline can provide a listening ear as well as information and signposting to services that can help.

Members pay £2 per meeting to cover hall hire, refreshments, the monthly workshop goody bag and weekly raffle prizes. Alternatively, if you would just like to come and bring your own project to work on, enjoy our company and make new friends without doing the workshops, the charge is £1.50 per meeting. Members take it in turns to make the tea. We took notebooks to our painting and decorating workshop in August and painted a piece of card, embossed it and then decorated it with various die cuts. It was outside the comfort zone of many members as it was quite industrial/steampunk rather than pink, butterflies and glitter, but everyone completed the project and rather enjoyed it. Although everyone started from the same point, no two notebooks were the same as you will see from our picture. In September with, dare I say, Christmas on the horizon, box making was our project and members were shown how the same procedure can be used to make boxes of any size or shape, plus a simple idea for a gift caddy so everyone is now prepared. Our programme for the rest of 2017 is: October 2: Kantha November 13: Mini Makes Month December 4: AGM and Christmas Party If all this sounds interesting there is currently room for new members so if you would like to join us please get in touch. Although the club is all ladies at present, gentlemen who would like to learn crafts are welcome. Unfortunately I cannot accommodate children. Jackie Durrant, 01449 672690

SCHOOLS / SPORT CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL I am delighted to be able to write to you at the start of this school year as I step up to be headteacher at Claydon High School. This role is for two terms while Mrs Skinner undertakes the exciting position of CEO of the South Suffolk Learning Trust and executive headteacher at Claydon High School. I have already worked at Claydon for six years as assistant and deputy headteacher, with a focus on teaching and learning, and have been proud of how the school has developed in this time. I am excited about building on its many strengths, working with some excellent colleagues, governors and members of our community, especially parents/carers. The wait was finally over for our Year 11 students when they received their exam results in August. They were the first cohort of students taking the new exams which are designed to be more challenging. Of our 140 students, 65% achieved a grade 4-9 in both Maths and one of their English GCSEs; the grade 4 is equivalent to grade C in other subjects. Our students achieved 24% of passes at grade C or 4 in their EBacc subjects, which include a language and humanities subject. We had many strong performances in individual subjects including from some students who had faced significant challenges during their GCSE studies. We are proud of all our students. As well as celebrating exam results, I would also like to pay tribute to the contribution these students made to school life in sport, music, drama, art and the many other areas of achievement and creativity in which they excelled. I wish them all the very best with the next stage of their education and training. I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents and carers for their fantastic support and to highlight the hard work and commitment of all the teachers, staff, governors and wider community that has contributed to our success this year and helped students on their journey. Moving forward to this new academic year, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new staff and Year 7 students and their parents/ carers. We have had a very busy start to the autumn term and I am delighted at how well our new students have settled in. Starting high school is an exciting time and it is pleasing to see how brilliantly they have adapted to the big changes in their school day and environment. We have lots of events and activities organised for this half term. Year 11 students are particularly busy with planned trips for several departments including Business Studies, Geography, Leisure and Tourism and to the Suffolk Skills Show. As I write, staff are busy planning for WOW Week at the beginning of November. This will be three days of specially designed activities for each year group. Year 7 will be camping at Mersea Outdoor Centre, taking part in various team building activities such as orienteering and rocket building. Years 8-10 will participate in a media based enterprise challenge. This will focus on creating an entrepreneurial spirit, developing leadership skills and accelerating employability skills. Year 11 students will spend a day at a college, sixth form or university, work with the YMCA on activities in school and will begin to complete application forms for future study and jobs. I will let you know how they all get on in December’s edition. If you would like to know more about our school and were unable to attend the recent open evening, please telephone my PA, Mrs J Saunders, on 01473 836110 to book a place on one of our open mornings in the autumn term. The date of the next one is Friday, October 6.

PLAYING FIELD NEWS SPROUGHTON BOWLS CLUB By the time you read this the 2017 outdoor bowls season will have finished and several of our players will have moved indoors for the winter season. Here at Sproughton we are celebrating an incredibly successful year with divisional wins for our teams in EBF 2 Wood Divisions C and G (our team in Division D narrowly missed out on promotion by just one shot in the final match) and BE Mixed Fours. Promotion has also been achieved from the EBF 3 Wood League Division C.

Mixed 4’s Play-off Winners

The August Bank Holiday weekend also proved to be an exciting one with victories in the finals of the Stan Wright Cup and Mixed Fours play-offs. To put the icing on the cake, one of our newest recruits, Jenny King, in her first year of bowling, finished as runner-up in the Stan Wright Cup Winners Suffolk EBF Ladies Novices Cup and in so doing contributed to Sproughton winning the area C Victrix Ludorum competition. Congratulations Jenny. Everyone involved with the club should be very proud of the successes achieved this year. Away from competition, 29 club members and guests have just returned from a fantastic tour of Dorset. Based in Weymouth, we enjoyed matches against Weymouth & Melcombe BC, Bridport BC and Wellworthy BC (the latter indoors due to typical English weather) all of which resulted in wins for Sproughton on the rinks. More importantly all games were played in the true ‘friendly’ spirit that makes bowls such an enjoyable pastime. Later in the tour, seven Sproughton bowlers turned out for Weymouth & Melcombe as they were struggling to field a full team for a tour match against Leicester City Touring BC. Many thanks to John Thompson for organising the tour. Full details of league and competition results, photos from the tour and contact details can be found at: www.sproughtonbowlsclub.com

SPROUGHTON JUNIOR TENNIS The new autumn sessions begin on Thursdays at a slightly different time: 3.50-4.20pm for four to eight year olds, 4.20-5.05pm for eight to 11 year olds, and 5.05-6pm for ages 11-18. The club has three courts of which two have a brand new surface. If your child needs to borrow a racquet that’s no problem, any ability will be catered for, stars or beginners. Come for a free session and see how you get on. The courts are on the playing field at Church Lane, Sproughton IP8 3AX. If you need more information please contact John Tallent: jttractorboy@sky.com Prices are excellent and new memberships are available.

ON THE GRAPEVINE CELEBRATing IPSWICH TOWN’S 1978 FA CUP VICTORY The New Wolsey Theatre has officially launched its fundraising campaign to stage a production to celebrate the legendary Ipswich Town FA Cup win of 1978, Our Blue Heaven, a musical production timed for the 40th Anniversary of the victory in May 2018. In order to meet the production costs involved in staging this sporting musical chronicling Town’s FA cup run, the theatre has launched its campaign to raise £45,000 in public sponsorship to cover a proportion of the costs needed to create the production. At the fundraising launch event held at the theatre, theatre patrons and local business owners were invited to view the ITFC sponsorship packages available via crowdfunding site Indiegogo. The theatre has created 12 levels of pledge packages, each named after a player and manager Bobby Robson from the winning Wembley squad. Individuals can “feel good for a fiver” with a £5 donation for the Cooper package, or donate right up to £10,000 for the ultimate package for any Ipswich Town fan, the Robson. Every package combines a unique level of gifts, some including premium tickets to the show, limited edition prints and specially selected, signed memorabilia from the 1978 team donated by Ipswich Town Football Club. Speaking at Tuesday’s event, Peter Rowe, artistic director of the New Wolsey Theatre and writer of Our Blue Heaven said: “Next year will mark 40 years since Ipswich Town’s Historic FA Cup Victory, a moment when Ipswich united to celebrate success as the underdog became victorious. We are working to commemorate this anniversary by producing a brand new musical production, using the stories and memories of the people of Ipswich and Suffolk at the time. The production is planned to open at the theatre exactly 40 years on from the Wembley Final and will really be a show drawn from the local community, for the local community. This production can only happen with your support. Help us to relight that fire and ignite the town in celebration

again, 40 years on from Ipswich Town’s historic FA Cup Victory!” As part of the creation of the show, the theatre has collated stories from those who were caught up in the events of 1978, whether they attended the match or not, from the third round victory in Cardiff in January to the final in May, and the euphoria of the Victory Parade. Stories that are funny, quirky, co-incidences and twists of fate, the scramble for tickets, the making of banners, trips to Bristol, Millwall, Highbury for the semi; Peter Rowe has created the ultimate feel good show directly from these memories, combined with the hits from the era. Ipswich Town Supporters Club co-ordinated the collection of the reminiscences, which will also be used as part of the ITFC Heritage Project and by the East Anglian Daily Times for a commemorative publication. Elizabeth Edwards, ITFC Supporter Liaison Officer, said: “Our Blue Heaven provides a chance for one of ITFC’s greatest achievements to be immortalised on stage. It’s not just about what happened on the pitch on the day of the final though – fans have provided their stories of the whole cup run, that wonderful four-month period of our lives when Town worked their way through to Wembley glory from the midwinter third round.” To pledge to back the project and make the production a reality visit: www.ourblueheaven.co.uk For more information from the New Wolsey Theatre, please contact Jeni Raw: 01473 295924 / jraw@wolseytheatre.co.uk For more information from the Ipswich Town Supporters Club, please contact Liz Edwards: 07968 876504 / officialitsc@btinternet.com

My sister was 21. I was 23. My dad was only 48 years old. It was a difficult time for my family, but we tried to support each other. Then when my brother was 18 years old, and in the Upper Sixth just about to take his A Levels, our mum died suddenly aged only 55 years. It was very traumatic. My sister and I struggled to know what we should do to help our brother while coping with our own grief, part time work, limited finances and small children. I was running a Brownie pack at the time and I remember one Brownie mum knocking on my door just a few hours after mum’s death. Her eyes were full of compassion as she thrust a beautiful bunch of garden flowers towards me and said simply “I am just so sorry”. I knew the gesture had not been easy but she had set aside her discomfort to reach out to me in kindness. I found that thought so very touching and still do. I also recall the gentle words of condolence expressed in the cards we received from people in our home village. Their shared memories and offers of support helped us to feel loved through our grief.

I often hear gratitude expressed during my pastoral visits to families. Grieving relatives are often pleasantly surprised that so many have taken the time to write letters or to telephone them. These gestures show that others are thinking and praying for them. They do not take away the pain, but can provide reassurance and bolster a sense of belonging.

However, I also remember painfully watching people quickly crossing the road to avoid facing me on the school run after the loss of my mum. And I will never forget the shock of watching my lovely brother breaking down and sobbing one evening after mum had died because of his friends’ behaviour. He had discovered that his classmates were excluding him from all their 18th birthday parties that year and the end of exams celebrations. He felt rejected and stigmatised on top of his grief. When he so needed his friends to gather around him they had stepped away not wanting to be affected. We understood that it was for their selfprotection and out of misguided respect, but I was so grateful for the one friend who stuck with him through it all, despite being under pressure of her own examinations. And to her parents who welcomed him into their home at various points and spent a lot of time listening with a surrogate, patient, parental ear.

The love and encouragement of friends and family is so important through any period of adjustment after the loss of a loved one. Loss can also be as a result of a relationship breakdown, loss of employment, or of a home. Making time to reach out to someone, to actively listen, to share memories, or to provide practical support helps to restore their confidence. When you ‘walk with someone in grief you are giving one of life’s most precious gifts – yourself’. And in doing so you are displaying the kind of love and comfort that God surrounds us with.
