A WORD FROM THE EDITOR We had a friend coming over to play last Saturday and I asked Jack if we should invite him to stay for dinner. “He loves Chinese,” my oh-so-quick sesame prawn toast loving son replied, so I said I’d send a message to his mum. “Is a message just a slow way of telling someone something?,” Jack asked and I must admit it would have been quicker and easier to pick the phone up and actually speak to Emma. Three texts later we knew Adam was staying for dinner, that he liked spaghetti bolognese and didn’t have any food allergies, so the answer to Jack’s question, at least in this circumstance, was probably YES. Information technology has transformed our lives for the better it so many, many ways, but nothing beats direct communication and social media can never replace actual physical, social contact. I’m reminded of a submission from Elaine Bamber in Washbrook which I’d like to share. I hope it gives you a giggle. FACEBOOK FOR THE OLDER GENERATION For those of my generation who do not comprehend why Facebook exists! I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers by what I have eaten, how I am feeling at the moment, what I did the night before, what I will be doing later and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my dog, of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving round town, having lunch and doing what everyone and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations and give them the ‘thumbs up’ and tell them that I like them. It works just like Facebook! I already have four people following me... two police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist!

NEWS CAN YOU HELP FOSTER A PET IN NEED? Blue Cross pet charity in Felixstowe is appealing to Suffolk animal lovers to join a volunteering scheme that offers temporary foster care to homeless pets until permanent homes can be found. The charity is looking for volunteers within driving distance of both its current re-homing centre in Felixstowe and its new re-homing centre near Ipswich, which is due to open in 2016. Volunteer foster homes offer essential care to pets that struggle to cope in a kennel or cattery environment, animals recovering from illness or operations, and litters of kittens and puppies that benefit from being raised in a home environment. Blue Cross provides volunteers with all the equipment and skills needed to look after the pets in their own homes. Special training, costs towards veterinary treatment, pet food and animal behavioural advice are all taken care of by the charity. Andrew Gillon, manager at Blue Cross in Suffolk, adds: “Blue Cross takes in thousands of homeless and unwanted pets every year. We like to get poorly, young and stressed pets into foster homes, but we desperately need more volunteers. We need foster homes in Felixstowe but we are also looking for new volunteers in the Ipswich area who can help us once we move.” To find out more about becoming a Blue Cross foster carer contact: 0300 777 1480 / felixstowe@bluecross.org.uk www.bluecross.org.uk

COPDOCK HALL WEDDING FAIR Copdock Hall is holding its second wedding fair on February 21 – a week after Valentine’s Day. The fair comes just 10 months after their official launch and wedding fair last April which marked the end of a near two-year renovation project at the Tudor barn. The wedding and corporate events venue is located next to the parish church of St Peter’s and boasts its own vineyard which will produce its first wine this summer. Grade II listed Copdock Hall was built around 1570 and most recently used for farming until bought from Suffolk County Council in 2012 by current owners Diane and Ian Evans. Diane Evans said this month’s wedding fair which starts at 11am would be bigger and better than last year’s. She said: “We’ve got more exhibitors this year so more for brides and grooms to see. Bookings are going well and we’ve had a lot of good feedback from brides and grooms and corporate clients who have held their parties and business meetings here.”

NEWS / OUT & ABOUT NEW MEN’S SHED APPEALS FOR TOOLS The new ActivSheds project at The People’s Community Gardens is appealing for tools. The ActivSheds is a practical project for men who would like to share knowledge, learn new skills and pursue hobbies and interests while contributing to a great community project. It’s also somewhere to socialise in an active way, as well as sharing a cuppa. Part of an international network, ActivSheds has been funded by a generous grant from the East of England Co-op. The project has attracted an enthusiastic core group, which has already renovated the shed at the Pavilion on Halifax Road to use as their base. Project Co-ordinator Joanna Whittle said: “It’s amazing how quickly the team has pulled together and taken hold of the project. “We have a lot of skills and enthusiasm in the group. I think the sky is the limit with our ActivSheds as the group are already bubbling over with ideas. They plan to work on a wide range of projects such as building raised beds and cold frames, and smaller items such as bird boxes and garden obelisks. The team have already tried their hand at garden sofas made of pallets and a greenhouse made of plastic bottles. “The group aims to build an ActivSheds Selfie Station to promote the project at the Suffolk Show in the East of England Co-op marquee. So look out for us. Everybody’s ideas are welcomed and it’s a great place to share skills. Other groups setting up a similar project may like to come along to share ideas and see what we are doing.” ActivSheds runs on Friday mornings from 10am at the shed at the CRESS Pavilion on Halifax Road, Ipswich IP2 8RE. If you have good-quality tools to donate, or would like to get involved in any way, please contact Jo – 07760 583950 / jo@activlives.org.uk – or the ActivLives office: 01473 345350 The grand opening will be on Friday, March 18 at 11am.

OUT & ABOUT IPSWICH QUIZ SMASHES FUNDRAISING RECORD The Hearing Care Centre’s 10th charity quiz night raised more than ever before, with £1,859.10 being taken on the night, surpassing the record of £1,522.38 set at their last quiz held in May. The event was organised to help raise money for BBC Children in Need and Suffolk’s Rural Coffee Caravan Project. On the night more than 260 people attended, which saw guests enjoy nine rounds of tough trivia and spirited rivalry, with five teams taking home cash prizes. The event took the total amount of money raised by the Hearing Care Centre at their now famous quiz nights to over £14,800. Managing Director Karen Finch said: “Our supporters continue to amaze me. They come out time after time to support us and are so passionate about the causes we are trying to help. I must thank everyone who came along, as well as our sponsors without whom we wouldn’t have had such a successful event. I would like to apologise to those people who we had to disappoint due to a lack of space, but my advice would be to book now for next year!” The company has already organised its next quiz night which will take place on Sunday, May 15 and they also have a murder mystery evening taking place on Friday, February 5.
BE HEARD IN 2016! Do you ever wish that others listened to you? Why do some people always seem to know the right thing to say, get things done, influence what happens, express their ideas well? Yes, some people are better at speaking in public than others, however you can learn how to command attention, speak persuasively, make your points clearly: it just takes practise. You can learn techniques to make yourself heard. Adopting a positive, open stance makes you look more authoritative. Controlling your hand movements and gestures when you speak can add emphasis and keep your audience’s attention. Avoiding filler words and ums and ers is something you can practise. Painting a picture in words makes your message stick in peoples’ minds. If you want to learn how to speak so people listen, why not come and find out what Speak Easy at Martlesham is all about? Guests are welcome, free, although it costs only £6 per month to be a member – and we welcome everyone. We are a friendly small group and we meet every other Thursday evening, 7-9:30pm, at the Richards Room, Martlesham Community Hall, Felixstowe Road, Martlesham IP12 4PB (behind Tesco). Find out more at www.speak-easy.org.uk and on Facebook and Twitter, or call Sonya Burrows: 07968 372563
SHERLOCK HOLMES COMES TO TOWN

There is bound to be something that will shake off the blues if you give U3A a chance. How about bringing some music, poetry, art or even new crafts into 2016 to cheer the way to spring?
The one and only Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr Watson are coming to town on Friday, February 5 to carry out their detective duties on a murder case titled The Suffolk Train Theft. The Hearing Care Centre have organised the murder mystery evening to raise valuable funds for their chosen charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. The evening will take place at the historic Ipswich and Suffolk Club on Northgate Street, Ipswich and the fun and frivolity will begin at 7.30pm. Guests will be treated to a delicious 3-course dinner and a full evening of deadly entertainment. Lots of prizes will be up for grabs. Tickets are £40 and can be booked by phoning Matthew at The Hearing Care Centre on 01473 230330. Please note there is limited availability. The Hearing Care Centre’s target is to raise £10,000 this year in order to sponsor their very own hearing dog, which will eventually go on to provide support and companionship to a deaf recipient.
www.keepingintouchwith.com/ipswicheast
Visitors and prospective members are welcome to the talks where the campus co-ordinators will be delighted to give more details of how to join U3A, an organisation for retired and semi retired people. More information can be found by telephoning the secretary 01473 273395 or at: www.u3aeastsuffolk.org.uk A note for U3A members is that although they might not be able to attend talks in their own area each month there are alternative dates, subjects and venues. Most details are in the green handbook and newsletters, but I know from experience that those are not always in the place you think you put them! The Ipswich U3A talks take place at Kesgrave Community Centre, Twelve Acres Approach, Bell Lane, Kesgrave IP5 1JF. The number 66 bus from Ipswich and Martlesham passes the centre every 15 minutes. Refreshments follow the meeting. At 2pm on Monday, February 29, Kesgrave hosts a talk by Terry Taylor on Just William: the life of Richmal Compton and the tales of William Brown. Why not come and remind yourselves of your childhood reading? Just right for cheering up February weather which can be a little cold and wet. Make U3A a part of your 2016 life for extra fun, a few laughs and more power for your hobbies and interests.

The half hour sessions are free and are followed by refreshments and a chance to chat and play until approximately noon. Why not come and visit us? You are welcome to just turn up on the day at any of the sessions, but if you would like any further information feel free to telephone us on the phone numbers below. We look forward to welcoming you! Our session dates for the spring term 2016 are: February 8 and 22 and March 14. IPSWICH WANDERERS FC Wanderers, sponsored by Total Car Parks, may have progressed to the last 16 of the prestigious FA Vase or may be pursuing league and league cup ambitions! As I write, the third round FA Vase tie between Welton Rovers and Bodmin Town has been postponed no fewer than five times so we still don’t know our fate in the competition. If their game was played to a conclusion, we will have met either one of them in the last 32. The weather has been so unkind in the West Country that we may still be waiting! At least Glenn Read’s squad is now fully fit and we can look to move up the league placings as we catch up with matches postponed during our excellent run in the FA Vase. Kevin Baker’s Under 18s are still top of their league as I write but we expect our undefeated near neighbours Woodbridge Town to mount a strong challenge for the title. The Under 18s play on Tuesday evenings under floodlights at The Doucy.

ON THE GRAPEVINE PARENTS IN SUFFOLK ENCOURAGED TO GET SUGAR SMART
Parents in Suffolk are being encouraged to get Sugar Smart and take control of their children’s sugar intake as part of a new campaign.
amount of sugar their family consumes, to protect them from the health risks of having too much sugar.”
Supported by Public Health Suffolk, the Change4Life campaign follows revelations that four to 10 year olds consume an estimated 5,500 sugar cubes a year (22kg), weighing the same as an average five-year-old.
Change4Life has also created a short film for social media channels which warns parents about the health harms of eating and drinking too much sugar, including becoming overweight and tooth decay. The film brings to life the excessive amount of sugar consumed by the average child per year; currently three times more than the new maximum recommended daily amount. Please see the Public Health Suffolk YouTube channel for the video: https://youtu.be/Tk05krUxjr4
Currently, 20.9% of four to five-year-olds are overweight or obese in Suffolk, increasing to 31.8% in 10 to 11-year-olds. This means they are more likely to become obese adults who are more prone to a range of serious health problems, such as heart disease, some cancers and Type 2 diabetes. Nationally, there are now 2.5 million people suffering from Type 2 diabetes, 90% of whom are overweight or obese. To help reduce sugar intake, a new Sugar Smart app has been launched to help show how much sugar there is in everyday food and drink. The free app works by scanning the barcode of products and revealing the amount of total sugar it contains in cubes and grams. Everyone can download the Change4Life Sugar Smart app via the App Store or Google Play to find out how much sugar is in the food and drink they consume every day and search Change4Life for lots of free support, tips, ideas and recipes. Businesses have also pledged to support the campaign through educating and helping customers to make healthier food choices when shopping. These businesses include Tesco, Asda, The Co-op, Aldi, Coca-Cola (Diet Coke and Coke Zero), Morrisons, mySupermarket and the Lead Association for Catering in Education (LACA). Councillor Tony Goldson, Suffolk County Council Cabinet Member for Health, said: “The latest child obesity figures for Suffolk highlight the importance for families to cut back on sugar in the diet. Sugar is lurking in everyday food and drink, taking children well over the maximum recommended amount. We’re encouraging parents across Suffolk to download the new Sugar Smart app and take control of the

Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist for Public Health England, said: “Children are having too much sugar, three times the maximum recommended amount. This can lead to painful tooth decay, weight gain and obesity, which can also affect children’s wellbeing as they are more likely to be bullied, have low self-esteem and miss school. Children aged five shouldn’t have more than 19 grams of sugar per day – that’s five cubes, but it’s very easy to have more. “That’s why we want parents to be Sugar Smart. Our easy to use app will help parents see exactly where the sugar in their children’s diet is coming from, so they can make informed choices about what to cut down on.” As well as the video to raise awareness, five million Sugar Smart packs will be given away to primary school children and their families via schools and retailer. There will be 25 Change4Life Sugar Smart roadshows, taking place across the country from January to March. Singer and TV presenter Jamelia is supporting the national campaign and starring in a series of Sugar Smart films from January. She says: “One of the trickiest challenges as a mum is trying to avoid sugar sneaking into my children’s diets. Supporting this new Change4Life campaign has opened my eyes to how much sugar is in the everyday food and drink we eat and drink. I’d recommend all parents download the Sugar Smart app to uncover sugar that’s in their everyday food and drink to make healthier choices when food shopping.”

ON THE GRAPEVINE / CHURCH NEWS
the
ARK
Well, we’re already a month into the new year. How’s it going for you? Have you stuck to those resolutions you made or maybe you never made any this year.
church
Bringing our thoughts into reality is always difficult but if we don’t move on we’ll be forever stuck where we are right now. Every change requires action and it will only change if we make the effort. The old saying ‘tomorrow never comes’ is true and today may be all we have. If you’ve ever considered looking into what Christianity is all about then why not come and visit us here at the Ark? We’re not perfect, but we are trying to go God’s way and we’re always happy to see new faces.
WALK THE PLANET AND MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE FOR YOUR LOCAL HOSPICE
Join us on Sunday mornings at 11.30am (Café and Children’s Church at 10.30am), for Wednesday Bible Study at 8pm or for Young People’s Night on alternate Fridays from 7.30pm. We also run Care For The Family courses dealing with parenting, pre-marriage and marriage.
This New Year take on a new challenge for your local hospice and Walk the Planet!
The Ark Church, Wolsey House, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR
St Elizabeth Hospice is asking local people to join them for a virtual challenge to walk around the world in 180 days.
We can also be found at: www.arkipswich.co.uk / Facebook/@ arkofthelord / Twitter/@arkipswich or email: arkipswichuk@gmail. com (our newsletter is available via free subscription)
Together, with others, you will walk the entire planet to raise funds for your local hospice and to help make sure nobody has to face their illness alone. The challenge can be done as part of your everyday life – just count the steps you take using the free Walk the Planet app on your mobile phone and add your steps to the walk’s total. Pauline Donkin, St Elizabeth Hospice’s fundraising development manager, said: “You could Walk the Planet with your family, friends, or even colleagues in your lunch break. “Why not pledge to increase the amount of steps you take in everyday life or add to your total by going for walks in the countryside. “Whether you take on the challenge with a group or on your own, you can help us make a world of difference someone in your local community by going the extra mile for your local hospice.” The challenge finishes in summer 2016, so there’s just 180 days for everyone to pull together and make each step count. It’s free to take part, but you’re asked to raise a minimum of £35 in sponsorship, which is enough to pay for a session in the therapy gym with a physiotherapist to help a patient improve and maintain strength and function, and remain independent. Register online now for free and we will email you the link to the free app so you can start your walk. Sign up at: www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/walktheplanet

This quote was recently published on the cover of a church magazine: “The church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints.” Augustine We need hospitals for those in need today, whether the need is physical, mental or emotional. While we appreciate how essential our doctors and hospitals are, we also recognise that they cannot deliver the same service as a loving God who is there 24/7 to help and to heal every part of the body and mind. That’s good news for everyone, whatever age, whatever culture, whether male of female. He is the answer for all of life’s needs. New Life Community Church meets every Sunday at Heath Primary School, Bell Lane, Kesgrave at 10.30am.
