A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
NEWS SNOWFLAKE BALL IN MAY?
A friend in Ireland posted this picture on Facebook and I just had to share it with you. It was taken outside a small convenience store and bakery in Co Kerry, but the message is one we should all take note of.
With the British weather as it is, it wouldn’t be unheard of to see snow in May. Local charity Home-Start can (unlike most weather reporters) guarantee it.
What makes this so effective is its simplicity. We could argue for days about globalism v localism but at the end of the day it’s people we need to think about and by supporting local business and shopping local we can all help make our local communities stronger now and into the future. When you choose to shop local or to use the services of local tradespeople you are investing in your community and helping to generate a vibrant local economy, and let’s face it people are generally happier and more willing to support local initiatives when they have a few quid in their pockets and are hopeful about the future. For once I’m going to let the picture do the talking! Happy shopping.
Home-Start will be hosting their second annual Snowflake Ball at Kesgrave Hall, Milsoms on Friday, May 19. Attendees will once again be dancing along to the band Soul Kitchen and after an arrival drink, will enjoy a sumptuous three-course dinner and a variety of entertainment. During the evening there will be the chance to win some amazing prizes and to bid on our silent auction. There is also the opportunity to be involved with a variety of sponsorship packages available to local businesses and prizes needed for the evening’s activities. So why a Snowflake Ball? The snowflake represents the unique, fragile and vulnerable nature of the children and families we support. Home-Start supports families for whom the pressures of family life have become too great to cope with alone; this can be for many differing reasons such as bereavement, physical and mental health problems. Families are matched with a trained volunteer who supports them on a weekly basis enabling them to grow in confidence, strengthen their relationships with their children, improve their health and wellbeing and widen their links locally. If you would like to find out more or to purchase tickets (£55) contact Home-Start at office@homestartcoastal.co.uk / 01473 621104 or visit: www.homestarteastsuffolk.org.uk

No doubt you are aware that Kesgrave News ceases publication this month after 25 years. I know it will be missed by many who have relied on it and come to love it over the years. I’m passionate about community engagement and believe we all benefit when we share a sense of communal responsibility and support those who make things happen on the ground, including local businesses but also events, fundraising activities and the many organisations or groups who provide opportunities for others. Community magazines play an important role in this and Kesgrave News is one of the finest examples I know of. As editor I’d like to acknowledge Chris and Don and the many, many volunteers who have dedicated so much time and energy to Kesgrave News over the years, but on a personal note, and knowing what’s involved each month, I just want to say well done. It’s an extraordinary achievement and you shall be missed.

KESGRAVE TOWN COUNCIL Full Council Meeting: Monday, March 13 at 7.15pm Members of the public are encouraged to come along to observe or to speak at the appropriate time during the meeting for up to three minutes. The agenda for these meetings and for committee meetings is normally displayed on boards outside the council offices, in Rupert Fison Square (near Tesco) and online at: www.kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk If you would like to speak to someone about an issue that you think the council might be able to help you with, you can always contact us on 01473 625179. When the office is closed there is an answer machine, but we will return your call as soon as possible. You can also email any queries or comments to: enquiry@kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk Kesgrave Youth Club is looking for volunteers We currently need volunteers for the Tuesday evening club, School Years 7 and 8. Whether you’re interested in volunteering regularly or prefer to be on our reserve list we’d love to hear from you. For more information contact: 01473 625179 Kesgrave Market The market takes place in the Scout Hall at the Rupert Fison Centre. You’ll find Paul’s Wet Fish van outside and indoors an array of locally produced bakery, fruit and vegetables, butchery straight from the farm and crafts made and sold by local people. Pop in for a cuppa and a snack between 9am and 12.30pm. Play and Open Space News As mentioned last month, work at Oak Meadow to install more play equipment and some outdoor exercise equipment suitable for adults and children 14+ should be taking place this month (subject to weather conditions) in readiness for the school Easter holiday. Please bear with us while the work is carried out to improve your park. Annual Town Meeting: Monday, April 3 If you want to know what is happening in your town, have ideas for the future that you would like to share, or want to find out what we did as a result of last year’s Annual Town Meeting, please accept our invitation to attend the Millennium Jubilee Hall at 7.15pm on April 3. If you would like to submit a resolution to be discussed, please submit this to the clerk prior to the meeting. Grant cheques will also be presented to a number of community organisations as part of this annual event. Big Lunch Fun Day: Sunday, June 10 Put this date in your diary. Plans for this community event are in full swing with schools, clubs and societies across the town getting involved. There will be something for all ages, abilities and interests to see, hear and do. You can bring a packed lunch or buy something to eat and drink at the event. Further details will be released in the May edition of In Touch with Rushmere and Kesgrave and a full programme of information will be included in the June edition. Senior Citizens Outing: Wednesday, August 16 Plans are already being formed for the Senior Citizen’s Summer Outing which usually takes the form of a mystery coach tour, returning to Kesgrave for a fish and chip supper. There will be a change this year as we have booked The Hut on the seafront at Felixstowe where people will be able to either sit outside and enjoy the view (weather permitting) or inside for a game of bingo,
4
dominos or cards before eating. This is where we would like your input. Should we stick with fish and chips or would afternoon tea be a nice change? We are hoping to have two coach pick up points and will pick up wheelchair users and their partners from their homes as in previous years. We will not be taking bookings until later in the year; this will be publicised in In Touch with Kesgrave and Rushmere, but we will take a vote on whether to have hot or cold food; contact us at 01473 625179 / enquiry@kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk Anti-social behaviour – Not always the ‘usual suspects’ Whenever the words ‘anti-social behaviour’ are mentioned, everyone thinks we must be talking about young people causing trouble of some sorts. Anti-social behaviour can be experienced in many forms and unfortunately not just by young people. Examples include: • Throwing litter out of the car window, dropping it when walking or dumping household rubbish somewhere quiet • Letting a dog jump up at strangers because they are not on a lead where they should be, e.g. on Long Strops • Thinking ‘nobody can see my dog’ when it’s dark or pretending not to see their dog ‘do that’ before moving quickly on and leaving it for someone to walk or fall into • Parking on the pavement so that wheelchairs, pushchairs and pedestrians can’t get through safely • Parking dangerously or inconsiderately • Breaking the 30mph speed limit The town council gets many complaints from residents about other people’s inconsiderate behaviour which is anti-social and in some cases illegal. Perhaps we all need to realise that living in a community, we have to be aware of our own behaviour and that of our children and the effect that this may have on others. Illegal and dangerous parking in Kesgrave Via Suffolk Constabulary and in conjunction with community partnership work with PCSO Sarbutts, Police Community Support Officer for Kesgrave, the town council would respectfully wish to remind some local residents to please take extra care and have more consideration when parking vehicles near to their properties or when visiting family and friends around Kesgrave. For example, parking on grass verges and on the corners of the public highway, causing visibility splays to other vehicles, is not only dangerous, but in some cases, it is also illegal. Please also consider visibility splays and deter from parking on public footways and grass verges which could potentially endanger the life of pedestrians, including young children, babies in prams and pushchairs, and disabled or less able members of the community. There have been a number of complaints from concerned local residents. Please consider other people when parking and use driveways or garages whenever practicable. We are aware that some households have more than one car and that driveways can sometimes be small, but please also be aware that Suffolk Constabulary are taking a zerotolerance approach in this regard.

NEWS ALICE GRANGE CARE HOME HOSTS VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT FAIR Volunteering in a care home or other local organisation can be one of the most rewarding ways to help improve our communities and the lives of others. To showcase the amazing work that volunteers do and to promote local volunteering opportunities, Alice Grange Care Home on Ropes Drive will be holding a volunteer recruitment fair on Saturday, April 22 in partnership with other organisations and charities that rely on volunteer support. The event takes place in support of National Volunteer Recognition Day and it felt timely that on this day we celebrate not only our wonderful team of volunteers but did what we could to make the role of the volunteer known. Any local group or charity that uses volunteer support is invited to have a stall to showcase the different ways people can volunteer in our community. Please make contact via kristy.smith@barchester.com or 01473 333551 if you would like the opportunity to have a stall and talk to interested people about what you do and what you need by way of volunteering. Are you looking for a volunteering opportunity? Don’t know what you could do? Then this event is very much for you! Come along and see what is available on your doorstep. We hope you will find an opportunity that feels great. It’s important to know that you don’t need a particular skill set to volunteer. Within our community there is a need for a great variety of skills and simply the gift of your time and company can go a really long way. Drivers, singers, befrienders and sorters, packers, walkers, knitters and cooks, chaperones, readers, nail painters and hand holders are all required and really do make such an important difference to the lives of those in need.

THE MASQUE PLAYERS PRESENT J.B PRIESTLEY’S WHEN WE ARE MARRIED Set in the early 1900s, a group of three couples, old friends and all married on the same day in the same chapel, gather at the Helliwells’ home to celebrate their silver anniversary. When they discover that they are not legally married, each couple initially reacts with proper Victorian horror (what will the neighbours think?) and then find themselves re-evaluating their marriages. Hovering closely over the proceedings is the Yorkshire Argus’ alcoholsoaked photographer, keen to record the evening’s events for posterity, and a wickedly destructive housekeeper who is hoping to use the couples’ mortification to her own advantage. Playing at Kesgrave Community Centre from Wednesday, March 29 to Saturday, April 1 at 7.45pm, tickets (£9 / £8 concessions) can be reserved via www.masqueplayers.com / 01473 725633 and will be available on the door.

Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ipswich, Woodbridge, Manningtree, Hadleigh, Stowmarket & surrounding areas and manager Andy Kerridge agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing

MARTLESHAM HEATH COUNTRY MARKET: MORE THAN MARMALADE
• Story Time: 9.45-10.15am
I visited one of the country market cooks recently and her house had a lovely warm marmalade scent which went nicely with a cup of tea and a homemade biscuit on a cold morning. Oh, I love marmalade and if you do too, don’t delay to claim your supply from the Country Market because it is quickly whisked off the shelves by those in the know. There are six or more different marmalades as well as a selection of jams, preserves and savoury spreads all at very reasonable prices. Hot chilli jam spread on cheese on toast is a secret I am happy to share with you. Fruit jam with plain yogurt is a refreshing snack or sweet course: sometimes simple treats fill the gap.
Thursday, March 2 2.45pm: Afternoon Book Group, currently reading Two Brothers by Ben Elton. 7pm: Adult Colouring, £2 with tea, coffee, biscuits and all equipment provided.
Did you know that you can order gluten-free cakes and bakes if you don’t see exactly what you want? Other preferences can also be catered for – come and meet our friendly award-winning cooks and find out what they can do. Savoury dishes, quiches and soups are there for the taking, for one person or more, and while you’re there, take a look at the lovingly crafted knitwear, gorgeous crochet-work, charming treen and must-hold wooden items that make unusual gifts, with a choice of artist’s cards and jolly hats, mitts and gloves that help to keep out the cold. We have a full and varied programme from September to May which includes competitions and guest speakers. We also hold practical evenings once a month and four times a year we have ‘digital imaging’ days, which are held on Sundays.

KESGRAVE CO-OP GUILD
Sponsorship continues with monies already pledged from BT Adastral Park and other local funding bodies.
At our AGM on January 24 the usual suspects were re-elected for committee, Gloria Everett as chairman, Ann Bugg as secretary, Rose Corder as treasurer and our social secretary and membership secretary remain the same.
Lastly, Phil Bull won the free MOT from Richard Pipe Engineering in our Christmas quiz. Why not get involved and volunteer with this major event? Centenary Celebrations On Monday, January 16, Duncan and Sue Foulger of Duncan’s Bakery handed over one of their masterpieces, an impressive and delicious cake celebrating the centenary of the start of Martlesham Heath becoming what it is today. The date in 1917 was when the Royal Flying Corps arrived to set up their aircraft development and testing airfield. The presence of the R.F.C., which became the Royal Air Force, continued until 1963, even when the Americans were here during the Second World War. The cake was later cut at a special event in The Control Tower Museum by Peter Davies (pictured here with Sue and Duncan Foulger), chairman and founder of MH100, and Martyn Cook, chairman of Martlesham Heath Aviation Society, custodians of the flying story of the heath.

Gloria gave her report of a very successful year and our accounts are healthy. She thanked the members who had helped with refreshments and visiting our members who are unwell. We look forward to another entertaining year in 2017. After the AGM, we had a fascinating talk by Mr Shippen, a solicitor with Fison & Co. He told some very funny tales of his life as a solicitor and included many useful tips for our members on points of law. On February 7 Laura from the Lighthouse Centre gave a compelling talk about the work they do and the horrifying statistics of domestic abuse. One in four women experience domestic abuse in their lifetime in the UK. She emphasised that abuse can be mental as well as physical. There were many other disturbing statistics and we all agreed that the work of Lighthouse is absolutely essential. Laura thanked those members who had bought donations of easy cook food for those women and children fleeing abuse. Lighthouse also run a Wellbeing Centre in Ipswich where those suffering abuse can drop in to receive advice and assistance. Our next meetings are on: Tuesday, March 21: Peter Wood from Breathe Easy will tell us about a group helping those with breathing problems Tuesday, April 4: Harriet Bennett will talk about her musical life in a talk entitled Me and my Cello Tuesday, April 18: An illustrated talk by David Prynn entitled China, Past & Present We welcome new members who can visit for two meetings before joining. The annual membership is £15 and we charge £2.50 per meeting to include refreshments and raffle tickets. Meetings start at 7.30pm in the community centre. The guild holds 23 meetings a year plus other trips and events. For more information please contact Gloria Everett: 01473 614991

RUSHMERE ST ANDREW’S MOTHERS’ UNION Rushmere St Andrew’s new Mothers’ Union group was opened early last year. We have had a very successful year with many new ladies becoming enrolled. Our programme has been varied and interesting with a wonderful afternoon of song and verse from the Birkbeck Singers, a Reflection Day for all the Ipswich Diocese and informative talks from many Ipswich societies. We closed the year with a Christmas afternoon tea. This year sees a visit to the mayor’s parlour in March and a talk about the Women’s Refuge in April. We meet every third Wednesday at 2.30pm in the Church Hall which is adjacent to St Andrew’s Church in Rushmere. The Mothers Union is a worldwide Christian organisation working to support families and communities around the world, and our theme for this year is Faith in Action. OUT & ABOUT ORWELL DECORATIVE AND FINE MARTLESHAM HEATH AVIATION SOCIETY In another full house we were treated to a most enjoyable evening at our ARTS SOCIETY
At our February meeting a full hall heard a wonderful talk from Dr Peter Webb about his friend the Bradford artist David Hockney. As well as detailing the amazing career of the artist with many colourful illustrations of his work, Dr Webb also added a series of anecdotes of his meetings and experiences with Hockney. It was a truly fascinating and enjoyable lecture. Next month promises to be another gem. On March 1 Antony Penrose will talk on Picasso, Man Ray and Max Ernst through the eyes of Lee Miller and Roland Penrose. Antony is the son of photographer Lee Miller and artist Roland Penrose and, as a boy, had personal experiences of these three great figures of 20th century art. Why not come along and enjoy some good company and an interesting talk? We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months and we also organise interesting day visits. The wonderfully illustrated lectures are presented by national and international lecturers and start at 2.15pm (2pm arrival is advised). Guests and non-members are welcome, provided we have available space. A £6 donation is asked. For more information contact Wendy Robbins: 07736 417347 / info@orwelldfas.org.uk www.orwelldfas.org.uk

We look forward to meeting you soon.
MARTLESHAM HISTORY SOCIETY John Griffiths present a talk entitled Ipswich Airport Remembered on Monday, April 10. Aviation started in the Ipswich area in 1912, but the first airfield wasn’t created until 1927, followed by the Nacton Heath airfield in 1930. Civil aviation flourished there until its takeover by the RAF for the duration of the war. It was thereafter used for flights to the continent and as a centre for private flying. The sad end came in 1996 with development for housing.
monthly meeting on Friday, February 3.
Our Honorary Vice President, Air Commodore Mike Bettell, OBE (retd) was accompanied by his wife and gave an illustrated talk entitled I Learned about Flying from Mistakes and Mishaps In The Air. Mike joined the Royal Air Force at the tender age of 18 and retired 37 years later. His first posting was to RAF Leeming to learn to fly the Jet Provost. Then on to RAF Valley to fly the Gnat trainer before flying the Hunter at RAF Chivenor and then the English Electric Lightning at Coltishall and Wattisham for five years. Mike also flew the American Phantom. Various stories of terrifying incidents were related along the way. The first when he was young and inexperienced and had a compass failing in a Jet Provost, a dirty windscreen on approach into the sun, landing in fog and a seat with an electric lift fault which caused him to be trapped beneath the cockpit canopy. All these incidents and more were told in his humorous way, but at the time they were obviously dangerous and potentially lethal. The ability to act rationally and quickly instead of panicking is clearly an essential quality for a pilot. A vote of thanks was given by our vice chairman, Robert Dunnett. On Friday, March 3 Peter Hart, the oral historian at the Imperial War Museum, will present a talk, entitled Bloody April – The Slaughter in the Skies Over Arras-April 1917. This talk is particularly appropriate because it is 100 years since the opening of an airfield at Martlesham for the Royal Flying Corps, an event which will be celebrated by an ambitious two-day event on Martlesham Green on July 8/9. All meetings are held in the community hall on Felixstowe Road and start at 7.30pm with a tea/coffee break. Non-members are welcome for a payment of just £4 at the door. Alan Powell, 01473 622458 www.mhas.org.uk
MARTLESHAM LADIES CLUB We have three meetings planned for this month. Mr Hughes will make a very welcome return to tell us more about his life in special education on March 2. On March 16 Gemma will tell us about the wonderful work of St Elizabeth Hospice and on March 30 David Morton will give a talk entitled The Wonder of Light. Looking ahead to next month, on April 13 we are holding a fashion show which will be presented by Edinburgh Woollen Mill. They will bring a selection of clothes which will be modelled by some of our members. Ladies will be able to buy their favourite items during the evening. Do join us for interesting evenings in friendly company. Meetings are held on alternate Thursday evenings at 7.15pm in the Richards Room. To find out more contact Doreen Boar: 01473 622768
Join us at Highfield Road Centre (26 Highfield Road, Ipswich IP1 6DA) on alternative Tuesdays and Thursdays for entertainment (crafts, flower arranging, games, music and much more) and home cooked meals for a small charge. Everyone welcome; don’t be lonely.
Meetings are held at Martlesham Heath Pavilion at 7.30pm. The admission fee is £2.50 and meetings are open to all.
Subsidised taxis to and from home can be arranged.

MEET YOUR LOCAL SUPERVISING SOCIAL WORKER FOR SUFFOLK Hi, my name is Antoinetta D’Allessandro, your local supervising social worker for the Eastern Region covering Suffolk. I have been working with the Sunbeam/Pride Fostering Service for more than three years and am 100% committed to my role within this company. I have both a personal and professional interest in fostering and feel this gives me the passion and insight to recognise what makes a good foster carer. I feel I am able to go the extra mile needed to support and understand my foster carers journey, which may at times be challenging but brings with it its own rewards. I like to adopt an individual approach to all my foster families, encouraging them to believe in the personal qualities they bring to the role of fostering, which in turn can motivate and inspire the foster child in their care to reach their potential. Pride Fostering is presently looking to recruit foster carers within the Suffolk area. For further information around what makes a good foster carer and the reasons why children become looked after, please go to our website for more information, where you can also apply: www.pridefostering.com/fostering-in-suffolk If you live in Suffolk or the surrounding areas and would like to know more about how Pride can support you as a foster carer visit www. pridefostering.com where under Events you’ll see the types of activities Antoinetta does with her foster families. Antoinetta is holding information days at Woodbridge Library on Wednesday, March 15 and Monday, March 27, 9.30am-5.30pm, and looks forward to meeting you for an informal chat and exchange of leaflets and further information.

Thursday, March 23 at 7.30pm: Stephen Govier presents a fascinating talk on the De La Pole Family, Dukes of Suffolk, a very influential family who rose from lowly origins as wool merchants in Hull to the highest echelons of late 15th century society. De la Poles were also involved in The War of the Roses and one was even a pretender to the throne at one point. The De La Poles are probably best known in Suffolk for their links in the Wingfield area, but come along and be surprised!

EAST SUFFOLK NATIONAL TRUST ASSOCIATION If you are a member of, or a volunteer for, the National Trust, we invite you to get more out of your membership by joining our association where a warm welcome awaits you. We meet at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre at 7.15pm. On March 21 Paul Forecast, the new regional director for the East of England National Trust, will be setting out his plans for the next 10 years and, in particular, how the trust will play a more active role in saving nature. The talk will be preceded by a short AGM. On April 25 Horry Parsons will be talking about the construction of the Millennium Tower at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, featuring the installation of the vaulted ceiling. Horry is a very entertaining speaker, as many will remember, and this should be another interesting talk. Visitors (even if not National Trust members) are welcome. The entrance fee is £3. National Trust members/volunteers can join us for £8 per year (£12 per couple at same address). We publish three newsletters a year for members and enjoy interesting day outings and other events. IPSWICH PHILATELIC SOCIETY At our last meeting we enjoyed a talk from Jeremy Gaskell about the treaty ports in China, both British and Foreign, as European countries tried to influence and gain trade from the Chinese. The French, German, Russian and Japanese, as well as the British, were represented in these ports, one of which was 500 miles up the Yangtze River. On March 1 Norman Emeny will present Astronomy & Archaeology and on March 15 we have a member’s competition where members can show up to 10 sheets on any subject of their choice. On April 5 we will be holding our annual auction where we sell stamps and philatelic material. There will be approximately 450 lots to bid for; viewing is on the evening from about 4pm, with the auction starting at 6.45pm sharp. Put the date in your diary if you would like to improve your collection or start a new hobby. Meetings are held at Cedarwood Primary School, Wilkinson Drive, Kesgrave, 7 for 7.30pm. Visitors welcome.
IPSWICH AND DISTRICT SOROPTIMIST CLUB Our members live all around the area but we share an interest in what is happening in our county town. In January we learned a lot from our very entertaining speakers about Ipswich Citizens Advice Bureau. They gave us a picture of the different people who come to them and of the types of issues that they seek help with. We were impressed by the detail and reliability of the information which their national system provides for their advisers and the respect and empathy which we sensed in their approach to their clients. Volunteers play a valued role in many aspects of their work. February was focussed on our conference at the University of Suffolk in celebration of Lighthouse’s 40th anniversary. As In Touch’s submission deadline is the actual day of our event, we can only say that we have everything crossed! We are very much looking forward to our regular monthly meeting on March 8 when Abby Grace from Suffolk Refugee Support will speak about experiences of the Syrian refugees in Ipswich over the past year. This is such an important topic for all of us locally that we wonder if other women would like to come and hear her. You would be most welcome. Please call Jackie on 01473 659314 for directions or for more information about Soroptimism.

PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP The working party and Nature Explorers cleared more of the southern tumulus in January and completed the new path to divert walkers and cyclists around this burial mound. To do this we cleared a strip of land next to the edge of the tumulus, removing plant life like By S Corley stinging nettles and their roots before levelling and raking the surface. We then built a dead hedge to encourage use of the new path, digging deep enough into the ground to position the wooden posts. After that we filled in the space between the posts with smaller logs and branches. The conservation group use dead hedging as it is very eco-friendly and creates a habitat for wildlife. We would like to encourage the use of our new path and request that everyone stays off the mound to prevent any erosion so that we can gain English Heritage approval and protection for the woods from development. The group is keen to preserve the history of the woodland as well as to encourage wildlife and improve access to the woods. DATES FOR THE DIARY Saturday, March 18, 10am-noon: Volunteer Work Morning (all ages). Meet at the Education Area. Tools, training and light refreshments will be provided. No need to book. Saturday, March 18, 9-11am: Nature Explorers (11-18 year olds), booking essential. Monday, April 3: Annual General Meeting Please contact us if you are interested in becoming more involved in the management of Portal Woods. Nature Watch Club: Starts again in the spring. Hello there! Spring is almost here at last – can’t you just feel it in the air? By the end of March the clocks will go forward and the evenings will start getting longer and we’ll really start to see the back of winter at last. Keep your eye on the weather forecasts though – it’s not too late to get cold snaps so you’ll need to be on the ball in case you need to whip out the frost protection. The growing season is starting to get underway and early potatoes can be planted out as soon as possible, second earlies and maincrops will follow later in the month. If you started off any peas, broad beans and the like earlier on, then you’re probably okay to transplant these now too. Seeds for a whole variety of crops can be planted outside (check your seed packets), but get things like your French beans and cauliflowers started off in the greenhouse if you have one. We’re looking forward to being able to get things growing in our new polytunnel this year. I’ll let you know how we get on as we’ve never had one before. If you don’t know where on earth (see what I did there?) to start, have a look in the newsagents for the various gardening magazines available. Many of them are aimed at beginners and several even come with free packs of seed and full step by step growing instructions. It’s a great place to start and everyone has to start somewhere, after all. If you’ve ever fancied growing your own, we do have a few plots available at our picturesque Rushmere St Andrew site. New members are always made very welcome. If you’re unsure if allotmenting is for you, why not go for one of our half-plots? For more information, please contact our membership secretary, Angela Brown: 01473 612283 / membership@kesgrave-allotments.org.uk Becki Ritson
ORWELL FLOWER CLUB We welcomed Susan Horne from Gt Baddow with a demonstration entitled Pick a Colour, any Colour on February 23. Susan can always be relied upon to give a most entertaining demonstration, her flowers are always of the highest standard and she always has interesting tales to tell the members. We are now looking forward to our next meeting on March 23 when Jennie Baker from Harlestone presents Chosen for You. This will be a return visit from Jennie and I’m sure she will give us an entertaining evening. Orwell Flower Club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew IP4 5SU. Our demonstration starts at 7.15pm, but the doors open at 6.45pm to allow you to browse at our sales table and buy raffle tickets for the displays created in the demonstration and raffled at the close of the meeting. Annual subscriptions, due at the AGM in April, are £40 and visitors are always welcome at £5 per meeting. For further details please contact Delcie Corbett: 01473 623371 / gil.corbett@btinternet.com

MARTLESHAM HEATH BABY AND TODDLER GROUP Martlesham Baby and Toddler group is a warm and friendly group run by mums. We hold sessions every Wednesday and Friday morning from 9.3011.30am in the Pavilion on Martlesham Heath.
MARTLESHAM & KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOLS The children at our Kesgrave setting had a fantastic time visiting Pets at Home. They travelled on the bus and watched as the animal cages were cleaned out. They were then invited for a snack at Tesco’s and spent some time in the bakery section. They also invited their own pets into the setting and created their own vet’s role play area. The children at our Martlesham setting have spent time making bird feeders. They have taken part in the RSPB’s Garden Bird Watch and have recorded the birds in their own gardens. They also thought about winter and the need to stay warm, creating a clothes shop where they have been able to try on and buy appropriate clothing. We continue to support and develop children’s learning through play, making it exciting and relevant. We are currently looking into the 30 hour government plan to fund children and shall be sending out questionnaires to families. TOTS PRIVATE DAY NURSERY What an exciting two months the children at Tots have had. During our topic on pets we were lucky to have a visit from two furry guinea pigs. One of our kind parents led the group time discussion and provided the children with hands on opportunity to learn how to care for the little creatures. It was lovely to see the children demonstrating their nurturing side. We also took advantage of the recent Robbie Burns festivities. For some of our children this was the first time they’d heard of a Burns Supper. We had traditional haggis for lunch with neeps and tatties! We also had a visit from a Scotsman complete with bagpipes and kilt, enabling the children to immerse themselves in Scottish culture. Chinese New Year has also provided the children with a culturally enriching experience. They enjoyed taste testing a selection of Chinese foods and impressed us considerably with their use of chopsticks. Arts and crafts were also in abundance; we made everything from a large scale dragon to traditional origami fans and Chinese calligraphy writing. We have several more visits scheduled. March will see us learn about the jobs people do and we look forward to welcoming the fire service, a dentist and the police. Tots offers care for children aged three months to five years. We offer government funded places for three-year-olds and eligible two-year-olds. Why not book an appointment to view? Viewings are available at 10am and 2pm and can be booked via: 01473 624749 / info@totsprivatedaynursery.co.uk www.totsprivatedaynursery.co.uk
Our tots have had lots of fun over the winter, enjoying our new toys and welcoming our new session leaders Sam and Kerry. This term we are introducing Crafty Friday on the last Friday of every month when we will have a craft table set up where your children can enjoy making a simple craft or picture. We have lots of ideas already but if you would like to contribute or have an idea please let us know. During March we will have a super Pamper Hamper raffle where you could win a luxury Mother’s Day hamper, plus our famous Easter Egg Party on March 29 and 31. Come along and join the fun. We have an informal, friendly atmosphere and there’s always a lovely sing song before more tea. We’d love to see you there! mhbabyandtoddlergroup@yahoo.co.uk / Facebook

SPORT KESGRAVE CRICKET CLUB In only a few short weeks Twelve Acre Approach will once again ring to the sound of bat on ball. This month is always the lull before the storm for cricket club administrators such as your correspondent. The season’s fixtures are all arranged, our supply of match balls is ordered and the square can be left alone to consolidate its new growth of grass. But as March turns into April the storm arrives – and it’s all hands to the pump. The square will be cut, rolled, cut again and rolled again; each wicket will be marked out and the creases painted in. And then just when you think all is perfect, we’ll probably have three or four days of hot sun and heavy rain and the square will need cutting and rolling again. Next the usual working party of middle-aged brain and youthful brawn will set about the annual task of rebuilding our old wooden sightscreens. Somehow it never seems to fit together properly, even though you could swear it did last year. The combined experience and IQ on display is awesome but the whole affair always turns into a scene from Fred Karno’s circus. Meanwhile our players are busying themselves with preparations for the new season. Our young cricketers are well into their programme of Monday evening training sessions. And our seniors – always a little slower to rouse to action than our mad keen youngsters – are about to begin their pre-season training. These sessions will take place in the sports centre at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre from 11am to 1pm on Sundays, starting on Sunday, March 5, and will run weekly for six sessions in total. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: it is important that all those intending to play in any of our senior teams in 2017 attend these sessions. I mentioned some of our early season fixtures and activities in our last edition but I’ll repeat them here for any who missed them: Our pre-season senior practice match has been confirmed for Saturday, April 15. The format will likely be mixed teams of players from all our senior squads. The 1st XI start their league campaign at home to Maldon on April 22 at home to Maldon, the 2nd XI start on April 29 at home to Stradbroke and our 3rd XI at home to BT & Waldringfield on April 30. All players keen to be involved can confirm their availability now via the club website: www.kesgrave.play-cricket.com. Also, we are planning to hold our annual Golf Day on Sunday, April 2l. Members, non-members, family and friends are all welcome. The details have not been fully pinned down just yet, so watch out for an announcement on the website or, for all registered users of our website, an email from me in due course. It’s always a fun day of gentle competition, prizes and plenty of laughs; a great way for us all to get together before the serious business of the season starts. Knight Watchman
KESGRAVE & NORTHGATE KARATE NEWS Tayler Evans made the step up from representing her club to representing her association at the EKF National Kyu Grade Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield on Sunday, January 15. This was the fifth Kyu Grade National Championships and marks the first major national level competition of 2017. This event was established by the English Karate Federation as a ‘stepping-stone’ to the full National Championships held in April. Both events contribute to the selection process of the English National Karate Team so all competitors have added incentive to perform. Tayler did not disappoint as she picked up a bronze medal in the cadet girl’s individual kumite as well as a gold medal in the cadet girl’s team kumite. This is her best performance to date at a national competition as a result of her dedication to training. Georgie Lawson attended her first international of 2017 on Saturday, January 14 in Estonia. This was part of her preparation for the European Championships to be held in Bulgaria in February where she represents her country for the third time. The standard was really high with international teams from Sweden, Finland and Latvia to name but a few. Georgina attended the competition without a coach, which was a big ask, but managed to fight her way to the gold tactically and physically and was over the moon with the result. This was another fantastic result for Georgie, massive congratulations to her. We are also delighted to say that Ipswich Audi is now a club sponsor along with M+C Diesel, IS Electricals and Chris Clow. A huge thank you to all our sponsors who help our club members realise their goals. Eleanor Legg

Once again we will be sponsored for the two open tournaments by haart Estate Agents and the flyers should have been sent out by the time this goes to print. If you would like to give the game a try, we have club drives most Saturdays and you can either ring me beforehand or turn up on the day. CHURCH NEWS OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW
the
At this time of year my mind starts to think about spring cleaning. What have I kept for too long that I need to get rid of? What cupboards need a good clear out? Every time I switch on my PC I get a message about apps that I haven’t used for a while and a suggestion that I might like to get rid of them to make space for new software. When you have a clear out do you, as I do, think that you should hang on to that thing as you might need it someday? Or perhaps, you are like my wife who thinks that some things just don’t need to be kept. Once you have cleared the space you will then have room for something new. Does this principle also apply to our time, making room to try something new? Perhaps that new thing could be coming to church? If you would like to come and see us we meet every Sunday morning from 10.30am-noon at Heath Primary School, Bell Lane, Kesgrave. You will receive a warm welcome.
ARK church
This month sees our 32nd anniversary and preparations are underway to make it a special celebration with invitations going out to all the churches in our region both within our organisation and the wider church body locally. Over the years we have seen much change, both in ourselves and in the world around us, but our hope in the power of God remains the same. Jesus is the same today, tomorrow and forever. There is a comforting stability that contrasts strongly with a fast paced and ever-changing world we live in. What He said more than 2,000 years ago still holds true, that only love can make a real change in what is happening – we must love God and love our neighbours. Join us on Sunday mornings throughout the year at 11.30am (Café & Children’s Church at 10.30am), for Wednesday Bible Study at 8pm or for Young People’s Night on alternate Fridays (see website for details). Declaring God’s Way - Sharing His Love
We have had some really sunny days recently. All around us signs of spring are beginning to show, even though it is still early February as I write. We thank God for the changing seasons and we give praise for his continued blessings to us all. At Rushmere Baptist Church we are in the midst of change. Having vacated our premises we are now ’camping out’ at various locations. The move went very smoothly and we are so grateful to all the folk who worked so hard and to a deadline to clear the church and leave it empty in time for the builders to move in. We are now worshipping on Sunday afternoons at Colchester Road Baptist Church. That in itself is a big change for us as meeting for worship at 2.30pm instead of 10.45am still seems a bit odd, but nonetheless we continue to enjoy the same fellowship and look forward to meeting new friends as before. If you would like to join us on Sunday afternoons you will be made very welcome. Set out below are the different venues for the various groups. Our usual activities are as follows: Monday: FFaF Children’s Club for School Years 2-6 from 6.15-7.30pm at St Andrew’s Parish Church Hall Wednesday: Rag Tag Drop-in at 2pm on the first Wednesday of each month at St Andrew’s Parish Church Hall Senior Citizens’ Friendship Hour at 2.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at St Andrew’s Parish Church Hall Thursday: Luncheon Club at 12.30pm at the rugby club Saturday: Meeting Point Coffee Morning on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10.30am-noon at St Andrew’s Parish Church Hall Details of our Easter Services will be published in the next edition of In Touch. Minister: The Rev Heather Marsden Secretary: Mrs Jean Cutting
