In Touch online:

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I heard an interesting term the other day, ‘world whelm’, defined as ‘crashing anxiety caused by a never-ending, nerve-fraying news feed’. Most of us will have experienced this at some point in recent months, but I hope we can provide a brief respite. I have my moments and occasionally despair when I watch the news, but as deadline day approaches and my inbox fills with emails from groups and individuals organising fundraising events or undertaking personal challenges to raise money for charity, I find comfort in knowing there are many, many, many good people doing good things every day of the week to help others. So when ‘world whelm’ strikes, pick up your In Touch magazine to ease the anxiety and perhaps you’ll be inspired to do ‘your bit’. You don’t have to jump out of a plane! Just supporting others in their efforts, whether it’s a local event or a fundraising activity is worthy. And there’s nothing quite like the exhausted contentment you experience walking home from a local event. Somehow it makes ‘home’ a little bit more special. You’ll have no problem finding things to do or events to support this month. Your problem may be fitting it all in! There are open gardens at Bradfield and Stratford St Mary (page 13), a vintage and collectables market in Manningtree on Saturday 24, book sales, movies, events to celebrate the 210th anniversary of Manningtree Methodist Church on June 3 and 4, Brantham Amateur Theatrical Society presents Bunkered by Lynn Brittney in Brantham Village Hall (see page 10), you can see Glorious by Per Quilter at The Manifest (see page 13) and not forgetting the Teddy Bear Parachute Challenge at St Michael’s, Brantham on June 24 (page 25). If you’re looking to lead a healthy active lifestyle check out Manningtree Free Fit Club on page 9, and if poetry might be your thing you’ll be pleased to read about Poetry Plus, a new poetry group meeting at the Red Lion in Manningtree. What a list, and I haven’t even mentioned the many, many regular groups offering opportunities to join others in an activity or just to chat and enjoy a cuppa.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE LAUNCHED WITH APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS Suffolk Libraries is launching this year’s Summer Reading Challenge and appealing for volunteers to help inspire thousands of children to get reading this summer. The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays and helps to get three quarters of a million children into libraries across the country. The number of children taking part in Suffolk has been increasing every year since 2013. It’s a fun way of encouraging children to keep reading during the holidays and is produced by the Reading Agency and delivered by libraries. The theme for 2017 is Animal Agents and a whole host of clever creatures has been created, ready to solve all kinds of crimes. The animal characters have been brought to life by Tony Ross, illustrator of the Horrid Henry series. The idea is for young children to read six library books of their choice and collect special stickers and other incentives along the way. A key part of the campaign is encouraging children to visit the library and speak to someone about the books they’ve read. The role of volunteers is vital to the success of the Summer Reading Challenge and it’s a chance to really make a difference to children’s reading and literacy skills. You just need to be able to come to the library for an hour or two every week during the holidays. Anyone interested can contact their local library or register online via: www.suffolklibraries.co.uk/src Krystal Vittles, Suffolk Libraries Development Manager and Children’s Lead, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a very important campaign for us. Children’s reading can dip during the long summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure and every year it seems to get more popular in Suffolk’s Libraries. Although it doesn’t start until July, the role of volunteers is vital so we’re always keen to get people on board as early as we can. It’s a great opportunity to get some experience working with children, it’s very rewarding and is something people of all ages can get involved with.” The Summer Reading Challenge will be running in all the county’s libraries and this year children coming to the new Suffolk Libraries Local sessions in Shotley, Red Lodge and Moreton Hall (which is due to launch in May) can take part too. In 2016, 8,260 children signed up to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge in Suffolk supported by hundreds of volunteers. There is no other free reading activity that involves so many children, introduces families to their library, encourages children to choose books freely and independently and is endorsed by parents, teachers and the Department for Education. For more information visit: www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk Nepal Children’s Trust Cake Stall at Bakes and Blossoms in Brantham on Saturday, July 21, 10am-noon. NCT aims to support children in extreme poverty in Nepal in a manner that sees every penny donated being spent directly on the children’s needs, and not on bureaucracy and corruption. 3

NEWS BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCIL 2016-2017 REPORT FOR ALTON WARD Babergh District Councillor Alastair McCraw Both Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have seen significant decisions made this year. The effects of these may not all be apparent for some time to come. Devolution, initially just Suffolk, imploded when some Norfolk councils rejected the final bid. The government offer was withdrawn. Another try is possible, but there may not be much appetite left. We will be adopting a cabinet model from 2017-18. Many principal decisions will be made by a cabinet of appointed members, frequently without reference to committees or the full council. Councillors will have the option to ‘call in’ certain decisions before they go into effect, with restrictions to avoid ‘time wasting’. The aim is to make decision making faster and more efficient. Our Scrutiny Committee are expected to see an increased role, although it is unclear as to how this will work in practice. Planning and Regulatory Committees are unaffected by this. We’ve asked the Boundary Commission to review ward boundaries and the number of councillors in order to even up representation. So far, the council ‘agreed’ a suggested figure of 31 to replace the current 43 (a 28% cut) as a starting point. Fewer of us making any decisions, we won’t need so many. Representing a larger number of people, there will be less to do apparently. Oh, Brave New World! A public consultation over proposed ward boundaries will take place after the first round of proposals. The final changes would take place for the 2019 elections. Public Access: In a far reaching decision, both councils will be leaving their offices at Hadleigh and Needham Market around the autumn and moving to Endeavour House in Ipswich, thus outside our own area. There may be some teething problems. The public will have face to face access to services in Ipswich itself and at offices in Sudbury and Stowmarket. A major part of this strategy is the way people are expected to access council services in future by phone and the internet. The new websites are up and running and can be used on all platforms (feedback is encouraged). Babergh’s address is now www.babergh.gov.uk. There are also more ways to pay for services online and a single phone number.

0300 123 4000 can be used for all departments between 8.30am and 5pm on weekdays. (0300 calls are included in all networks free minutes packages, or cost the same as 01 or 02). Those headquarters become the initial basis of our property portfolios. To replace long term reductions of the government’s Revenue Support Grant we find we have to generate new revenue streams by investing in property. It is believed this will produce a significant return to shore up the finances. To that end both councils have set up a Capital Investment Fund Company with up to £50million of borrowing permission (50% owned by each council). New Homes Bonus has fallen well short of estimates so far (we need that money!) and has had new restrictions applied to it. Further, a Judicial Review of an East Bergholt planning decision has upset the council’s Core Strategy Policies. We can no longer demonstrate a ‘Five Year Housing Supply’. In that event, we are required to apply a ‘presumption in favour of development’ and are expected to grant such applications.... even overriding local plans, and possibly neighbourhood plans too. There are even fewer planning certainties for now. Your Council Tax for 2017-18 is about 2.9% up on last year. Babergh’s increase was 3.4% or £5 a year, the maximum allowable, so that we could achieve a balanced budget. That forms about 10% of your total Council Tax bill. Much of the day to day business continues as you would expect. Bins are emptied, licensing carries on, all the essential every day functions that you would expect will continue, even if they aren’t noticeable. As to my own role, I continue to deal with individual queries, concerns, worries or problems and can always be contacted on 07812 564188 or at alastair.mccraw@babergh.gov.uk to help where I can. I’m also quite active and vocal in committee, council and working groups at Babergh. Thank you for your time and attention. Questions are welcome and should be positively encouraged.

THE FUTURE OF GENERAL PRACTICE The NHS Five Year Forward View advanced some fairly radical ideas about the future of general practice. At its inception in the 1940s, most NHS general practices were single-handed. Over the years partnerships have developed, so that now throughout the UK there is a mixture of various sized partnerships with very few single-handers left, the average list size being around 7,300.

• • • • •

NHS England have made it quite clear that they will not offer future contracts to practices with less than 30,000 patients and are actively encouraging the creation of super partnerships of over 50,000 patients. Trail blazers in this area are Our Health Partnership (OHP) in Birmingham, where 37 practices joined together to form a super-partnership covering 300,000 patients in November 2015. Many other super-practices are now in the pipeline, including two in North East Essex.

As a patient, I am sure you will be concerned about what changes you will notice. The answer is simply you should not see any differences. You will still be registered at Ardleigh Surgery and be seen here. Our doctors and staff will remain working here and we will retain our autonomy to make decisions about how Ardleigh Surgery is run. It is hoped that as the partnership establishes itself you will see additional services offered locally and improvements to community services.

Ardleigh Surgery is to join The Colte Partnership (TCP) from its launch on 1 June 2017. This will be a partnership of 12 local practices and it will cover 120,000 patients. The partners at Ardleigh took the decision to join because of the benefits to the practice which include

EVENTS AT MANNINGTREE METHODIST CHURCH

The Acorn Village Charity for adults with learning disabilities would like to thank everyone who supported the NAFAS flower show. A special thank you to the NAFA volunteers for all of their hard work arranging it. This month one of our tenants has managed to persuade CEO Michelle and operations manager Gary to be gunged for funds. She has also managed to convince them to dress up as ‘reversed’ royalty if they raise over £300, so Gary has to wear a dress and make-up and Michelle has to wear a suit and tie complete with moustache. You can sponsor Louise’s gunge by visiting Acorn or one of the shops or online at: https://mydonate.bt.com/events/gunge And now a special plea from Kate Williams, Commercial Development and Marketing Co-Ordinator at Acorn Village. Kate is taking on the Great East Swim on June 17 to raise funds for Acorn Village. Here she explains why and asks for your support. “I’m unfit and have never attempted anything like this before, but seeing first-hand just how difficult it is in social care right now – you only have to look at the homes shutting down all over the place – if I can make a little bit of a difference by putting myself through freezing cold torture (anyone who’s heard my view on cold showers will understand this dramatic phrase!) then great. Luckily I know a fabulous group of people who will look after me if I do indeed collapse.

Friday, June 30, 7pm: Folk Night Free admission. Retiring collection for All We Can, a Methodist charity for famine relief.

“So if you choose to donate today I can guarantee your money will be spent making the lives of adults with learning disabilities better. It will go on things like confidence boosting activities such as drama, college, horse-riding, sailing, dealing with things such as demonstrative public ignorance of learning disabilities (sadly it still happens) through therapy and counselling sessions, create creativity and life skills with gardening, art, craft and theatre, as well as paying for the boring bits such as fuel and maintenance to ensure these activities and sessions happen.”

VINTAGE & COLLECTABLES MARKET

Saturday, June 3, 7pm: Spectrum A welcome return visit to Manningtree Methodist Church by this popular choir, supported by Phil and Jemma. Tickets £7 on the door or from 07867 546484.

Manningtree’s First Vintage & Collectables Market has been hailed as a big success with shops reporting a five times increase in business. The town came alive as people flocked to see a great selection of vintage and collectable gems from dealers and individuals. “We had such positive feedback from the day,” said Mel Winning of Manningtree Business Chamber. “Many compared it to a lovely French flea market, with great creative stalls and a fun relaxed atmosphere.” We now look forward to the rest of the summer with a market every last Saturday in the month up to September 30. Come to Manningtree and enjoy the market.

SINGING FOR THE BRAIN Singing for the Brain is a service provided by the Alzheimer’s Society which uses singing to bring people together in a friendly and stimulating social environment. The local group meets at the Venture Centre 2000 Lawford every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 2-3.30pm. Singing is not only an enjoyable activity, it can also provide a way for people with dementia, along with their carers, to express themselves and socialise with others in a fun and supportive group. Hidden in the fun are activities which build on the wellknown preserved memory for song and music in the brain. Even when many memories are hard to retrieve, music is especially easy to recall. Do I need to be good at singing to join? No – everyone’s welcome whether you already sing or not, and you don’t need to read music. What sort of songs will we sing? A range of different songs are sung from different eras, musical styles and traditions and according to the preferences of the group. The ‘Singing for the Brain’ model involves trying new pieces of music but also essentially familiar and well known songs and melodies. What can we expect? We meet regularly, once a fortnight, and sessions last for about one and half to two hours and include a relaxed welcome with refreshments on arrival. After about half an hour the singing leader calls everyone into a circle and uses a greeting song to welcome everyone by name. The session begins with some gentle tried and tested vocal warm-ups and breathing exercises to ease tension and relax the muscles in hands, feet, neck and shoulders. This increases lung capacity and increases blood flow to the brain, helping keep the brain in optimum condition. Action songs increase the playful exercise element and give challenges to the brain which people with memory problems often cope with very well. Well known songs are used to evoke verbal and emotional memories. Sessions usually include light percussion or other accompaniment from participants. We generally finish with a quieter song as a calming finale, and to wish each other well till we meet next time. Find out more at: www.venturecentre2000.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT MANNINGTREE & DISTRICT PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

MANNINGTREE FREEMASONS WORK FOR CHARITIES The end of the Masonic Season is nearly upon us and the Lodges have ended their year with donations to several local charities Following a visit from the Manningtree Branch of the Royal British Legion, a sum of £414 was passed to their Branch while other donations of £100 each were made to Clic Sargent, the Children’s Cancer Charity, The Olive Dove Fundraising Appeal, Manningtree First Responders and Colchester Hospitals Charity in aid of a new cancer facility. An additional donation will shortly be made to Fresh Start, a charity that supports children who have suffered abuse.

In April we were privileged to have a visit from Colin Westgate FRPS MFIAP, one of the most experienced and well-qualified photographers in the area. Based at West Mersea and working under the name of Quest Photography, Colin’s interest began in 1959 and he still likes black and white. He talked to us about The Expressive Landscape as illustrated by this intriguing, faultless and atmospheric picture of the Misty Severn Sisters in Sussex. Colin has generously shared his experience with us and others, so if you want to sharpen up your technique have a look at www.chelmsfordcameraclub.info/technical_general_landscapes.html, but please do credit the author and Chelmsford Camera Club. The society entered the annual Granville-Foulger Trophy Competition, again organised by the East Ipswich Camera Club. We maintained a commendable third place against some larger clubs including the winners, Bury St Edmunds. Our Open Colour Competition later in the month proved popular and again challenging. Last minute stand-in judge, Patrick Hyam, another experienced hand (of over 30 years) was quietly spoken and philosophical, but delighted us with his dry humour. The acid test of a good shot in his eyes was one that would provoke a reaction from that mythical Mr Average ‘on the Clapham Omnibus’, the key points being interest and interpretation. Luckily one of two out of well-nigh 80 entries did so, notably from Harvey Perkins, Richard Woolven, Barry Weaver and Ian Parker. Our 2017/18 season will commence in September and run through to May 2018. Another full programme of talks and competitions is promised which we hope will further your enjoyment of this fascinating hobby. We meet twice monthly on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm at St John’s Centre, Station Road, Manningtree CO11 1EB. New members will be welcome to join the society or may attend initially as a visitor (£3). Please contact our secretary, Margaret, for more information: 01206 396958 / madps@post.com www.manningtreeanddistrictphotographicsociety.co.uk

While these donations were being reported, our dining room staff mentioned that two of the waitresses would be undertaking a sponsored walk in aid of the British Heart Foundation. The two Lodges immediately donated £200 to the appeal while a table collection raised another £200, much to the surprise of the staff. We continue to support Essex Masonic Festival which over the next five years is expected to raise £5million from the 300 Essex Lodges. This will be used by the Masonic Charitable Trust for Masonic charities as well as public charities which have in the past included Air Ambulance Services, hospices and the Red Cross. Lodges in Manningtree continue to thrive with new members coming along each year. Interested? Contact any member or call 01206 392348. It doesn’t cost as much as most think to become a member and enjoy fellowship and activities.

MANNINGTREE ROTARY CLUB Manningtree Rotary Club is collecting again. Last year we collected tools for Tools with a Mission (TWAM) and with your help it was a great success For a period of time this year we will be collect spectacles on behalf of Vision Aid Overseas. OUT & ABOUT 1334 (MANNINGTREE) SQUADRON Cadet Charlie Warrick has received the Royal British Legion, Manningtree Branch, ATC Cadet of the Year Award 2017. Charlie was chosen from members of 1334 (Manningtree) Squadron, Air Training Corps. A much deserved award for all his hard work within the Air Training Corps. A huge thank you to the Rotary Club of Manningtree Stour Valley who presented a cheque for £200 to 1334 (Manningtree) Squadron, Air Training Corps, in recognition of the community help received during the Christmas Santa Sleigh collections. Presenting the cheque is Mr Robert Sharrett, immediate past president. Also in attendance was the newly appointed president Mr Colin Daines who gave a very interesting potted history of how the Rotary was first formed and its actions on the international and local stage. Flt Lt Janet Brown, Commanding Officer of the squadron, said: “My cadets had no idea of the portance that the Rotary gives to the local community. They will definitely be volunteering next Christmas.”

TEA & SUPPORT Tea & Support is a friendship and self-help group, formed some four years ago for those who have been bereaved or are living alone. We meet on the third Wednesday afternoon of each month from 2-4pm in the Church Hall, New Road, Mistley. These meetings usually consist of a talk or activity followed by an opportunity to chat over tea and homemade cake. Several times a year we have an outing to somewhere local for either lunch or afternoon tea. As our numbers have increased we have needed to hire transport for these outings. To cover our costs we now ask our members for a donation of £1 each per meeting attended. There will be a very interesting talk at our next meeting on June 21 when our new helper, Judith Hooks, will be speaking about her frequent visits to Vietnam with her partner, Robert Lupton. Judith and Robert now sponsor a child there. Come along to hear more. For further information please contact Joy or John Baker on 01206 391918 or for transport please call Paskell’s on 01206 396709. The 2017 programme is now available from Paskell’s in Manningtree, in St Mary & St Michael’s Church, in Bradfield Church or from the Benefice Office on 01206 392200.

BRANTHAM OVER SIXTIES CLUB The title Hypnosis for the Seven Ages of Man may be off-putting for some, but Dr Nic Cooper’s talk on the subject on April 11, and his account of dealing with patients aged seven to 95 suffering with phobias, anxiety, pre-op stress and depression, proved extremely interesting and discussion with members continued well into refreshment time. On April 18 we enjoyed bingo, preceded by a fish and chip lunch, and it was flower arranging on April 25 with some really artistic results. DATES FOR THE DIARY June 13: Fish and Chip Lunch, followed by Bingo June 20: Discovering my Gift as a Medium by Judith Burl June 27: Strawberry Cream Tea Meetings are held on Tuesday afternoons (bar the first in the month) from 2.30-4.30pm at Brantham Leisure Centre. Visitors and new members are always welcome For further details please contact Jean Lace: 01206 396242 www.keepingintouchwith.com/manningtree

ORWELL DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY Timothy Schroder presented a talk titled Sacred Silver in England: 500 Years of Change at our May meeting. Timothy is a specialist in silver and has written several books on the subject. He took us through the history of church silver from medieval days to the present, explaining how most of the beautifully ornate medieval silver was destroyed and replaced by a more austere Elizabethan and Puritan style. The Victorians re-introduced a more decorative style and present day church silver is equally beautiful. With many fine illustrations of church plate through the ages this was a most enjoyable and interesting talk. Our meeting on June 7 will be our last of the present season. The talk at 2.15pm has the intriguing title Artists and Espionage: The Lawn Road Flats NW3: Modernist Living in Mid-20th Century. London. Guest lecturer Deborah Lambert will explain all. The lecture will be preceded at 1.45pm by a short AGM which is for members only. So why not become a member and enjoy good company and interesting talks? We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. The meeting lasts about an hour with tea and coffee available up until 2pm. Guests and non-members, are welcome provided we have available space. Exceptionally popular lectures will have a guests/visitor limit of 20 so please contact Wendy Robbins before the day on 01394 823807 to check if there is available space. Last autumn and spring this year have seen our unit expedition training programme completed, culminating in practice expeditions for both bronze and silver levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and the Chief Scout’s Platinum and Diamond Awards. Last year we reported six new members had joined the unit forming a new bronze team, our eleventh, and their qualifying expedition was also successfully completed during the recent bank holiday weekend in East Suffolk at bronze/platinum level. Seven unit members, our fourth gold team, are now gearing up for their Queen’s Scout / DofE expedition on Dartmoor this summer which for most of the team will be last section of the award to complete before departing for university. The unit has already set up another bronze team this year, our twelfth. With more young people expected to join the unit this year we are still seeking additional adult support to join those who volunteered following last summer’s request. If you hold a Duke of Edinburgh Award and would like to help more young people achieve theirs, or wish to know more, please contact Roger for an informal chat. We now have a fairly strong team supporting the expedition programme and the award schemes generally, but we are keen to lighten the load by recruiting additional team members. We meet once a month for the award programme element of the general Explorer Scout programme and help with some of these and/or the expeditions would be appreciated In addition to the recognised award schemes offered by the unit there are other opportunities to participate such as offshore sailing organised by Suffolk County Scouts with one of our Explorers taking part in one leg of the Tall Ships event from Finland to the UK. There are a number of weekend events too where there are opportunities to be part of the crew. There are also many international activities to take part in, with two Explorer Belt expeditions this year in South Africa and next year to Poland. These events usually involve training prior to and completing a project in the country being visited. STOUR VALLEY MEN’S PROBUS CLUB

On Wednesday, May 10, Emma Roodhouse, art curator at Colchester & Ipswich Museum Service, introduced us to Leonard Squirrel, known as the ‘grand old man’ of East Anglian painting. In highlighting his prolific career, she concentrated on artworks in the Ipswich Borough Council collection, including drawings, watercolours, etchings and pastels from 1912-1978.

Tom Tyler returns on June 7 with a talk entitled When Holidays Were Fun and on June 21 John Field will speak to us about the redevelopment of Ipswich Docks.

On Wednesday, June 14, Alan Goldsmith from Stansted will present a talk titled Giving it Both Barrels, an amusing and light-hearted talk of his 50 years in the rock ‘n’ roll and entertainment business. On Wednesday, July 12, Dr Stephen Ashworth, senior lecturer at UEA, will talk on kitchen chemistry, a science show using readily available materials to illustrate some of the principles of chemistry. Our main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those who are no longer in full time employment and emphasis is always placed on making learning active and fun as well as helping in developing friendships. We have a wide range of groups including language study, country walking and computer studies and groups that visit gardens, churches and historic buildings. In the main, membership is drawn from communities in the lower Stour Valley and adjacent areas including Brantham, Capel St Mary, Dedham, East Bergholt, Holbrook, Lawford, Manningtree, Raydon and Stratford St Mary. We are affiliated to the ThirdAge Trust, have over 260 members and 21 groups. For further information please visit www.stourvalleyu3a.org.uk where membership secretary Gillian Gibbs may be contacted. We meet at Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2.15pm. Annual membership is £12 which entitles members to attend meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, except August and December. It’s never too late to learn! Join the 361,477 members across 969 U3As throughout the UK today.

On July 5, Lewis Tyler presents Daddy, What is TV?. On Wednesday, July 19 we are holding our summer lunch and invite our spouses and Probus widows to join us. This year we have moved to The Haywain to enjoy the occasion. We don’t hold a meeting in August and return after our break on Wednesday, September 6 when Tom Williams presents Everyone Has a Book in Them, followed on Wednesday, September 20 by Philip Roberts with a talk entitled The Mary Rose. Our club endeavours to be simple in structure, free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs and involve members at minimal cost. The club is directed primarily to providing fellowship between members who are compatible with each other and the opportunity for development of acquaintances. New members are welcomed. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at St John Ambulance HQ, Manningtree CO11 1EB at 10.30am. For further details please contact speaker secretary Dave Carman: 01255 880202

VILLAGE LINK CLUB In May Horry Parsons presented a talk about the building of Bury Tower. Substantial foundations had been put in during the 1960s, but money ran out before the tower could be built. A legacy from Stephen Dykes Bower, the cathedral’s resident architect (1943 to 1988), and a contribution from the Millennium Commission allowed building of the tower to commence in 1998. Despite its 150ft height, the planning application simply stated that it was to be a single story addition to a single story building. Constructed from high quality Barnack Limestone, the tower should have a life of several hundred years. Ninety-eight miles of tubing was used to form a free-standing scaffold tower to aid construction. On June 14 Nathan will present a talk about the Hearing Care Centre. Future talks this year will be: Local History of our Villages, Suffolk Chapter & Verse, Elderly Drivers, Jewel of the Canaries, A Year as Mayor of Ipswich, Christmas Special Message & Carols, First Aid & AED, Dad’s Army, History of Scarecrows, Pray Silence for ? and History of Butley Priory. Meetings are held at 10am on the second Wednesday of every month in Tattingstone Village Hall. Following the speaker we have refreshments, when there is time for a chat with other members, and a raffle. New members and visitors are welcome to join us. After the August and February meetings, we normally hold a members’ lunch. Roger Felgate: 01473 311684

LAWFORD & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Our last meeting featured a change of plan, our speaker having cancelled. Instead we welcomed John Hall, the former CEO of Essex Wildlife who now lives here in Lawford. In fact he walked his ‘speaker’s essentials’ to the meeting in a wheelbarrow which we thought was very eco-friendly! His talk on the different areas of Essex under the care of Essex Wildlife, with slides of some of the birds, insects and animals, was very much appreciated by the members. The work put in to save and improve parts of our county is staggering. On meeting on June 15 will be a visit to Kings Seeds at Kelvedon. We are hoping for a balmy evening among the sweetpeas which should be at their best in mid-June. Members and guests are reminded that we meet there, in Coggeshall Road, Kelvedon, at the earlier time of 6.30pm. Fingers crossed for good weather! 18

SCHOOLS / SPORT MANNINGTREE HIGH SCHOOL

LAWFORD FOOTBALL CLUB Lawford U18s are Colchester & District Youth League champions. After losing only one of their 16 league games, our U18s are this season’s Division A winners. With a final tally of 41 points, Lawford headed off strong challenges from Frinton & Walton and Halstead Town, both of whom finished on 38 points. U18 manager John Duchars said: “I am so pleased for all the players. They demonstrated tremendous commitment and hard work throughout the season and the whole squad played their part in this success. What a way to end your youth football experience.” Team captain Harry Carmichael said: “The success was built from the back. In our first three league games we conceded seven goals, but we went on to only concede nine goals all season and kept 11 clean sheets. They were so solid after those initial games and it gave everyone confidence. The team got stronger in midfield and in attack because of it. Of course, 39 goals from Christian Rayner also helped.”

Manningtree High School Under 15 girls’ squash team played in the National Schools Finals on Tuesday, March 21. The girls sported new squash shirts kindly donated by Mr Fred McKennon of the Citi-Group. The girls came fifth overall, making Manningtree High School the fifth ranked school in England! Well done to Libby Connor, Hannah Morley, Hattie Callen, Rosie Snook and Elli Barrett.

BROOKLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL Our inspirational sports coaches, Haz and Terry, have also been supporting our children with football, handball and rugby. Over the summer term we will be introducing exciting new sports clubs including tennis and basketball. Many of our families enjoyed building dens over the Easter break as part of our holiday challenge. Whether it was in the garden, woods or at the beach, photographs of the children’s dens showed they were a great place to play with friends We are very fortunate here at Brooklands to have an allotment in the school grounds in which our children love to grow their own crops. The children have already planted runner beans, baby carrots and cress. Do you know of families moving into the area who would like to come to us? We currently have a limited number of places in Years 1, 2 and 3. For information on how they can apply for their child to join Brooklands during the school year (in-year applications) please contact School Admissions: admissions@suffolk.gov.uk / 0345 600 0981 Our Early Years children have enjoyed cooking hot dogs on a camp fire. In applying real life contexts to their learning, the children were thrilled to be cooking their food after learning through role play how they would shop for all their ingredients, including the obligatory tomato ketchup! This is the second consecutive year that a Lawford U18s team have topped the league’s Division A – a huge achievement for the club Amongst the senior teams, Lawford Ladies have continued to have a fantastic season. The ladies were narrowly beaten in the Essex County Cup quarter final, losing out to higher league opposition Writtle FC. However, they went one stage better in the Essex FA Ladies League Cup. After a great 6-3 victory against Frontiers Ladies in the Tiptree Cup semi-final, the team met Harlow Town in the final, losing 5-4 in what was described as a “cracking game”. Lawford Ladies manager, Marc Lawson, said: “Everyone in the team should be proud of their performance”. The league form continues to impress. With six league games to go, Lawford sit second in the Essex FA Ladies Premier League having only lost three league games all season. But that’s not all! The ladies also made it through to the regional Peoples FA Cup and currently hold the Essex FA Ladies five-a-side trophy. No one could have believed at the start of the season just how much progress these ladies could have made, but hard work and belief have seen Lawford Ladies FC being one of the feared ladies’ teams in the county. Over the last few seasons matches between Lawford U14s and Little Oakley Reds have become something of a local derby. Always thrilling for spectators, and on occasion eventful, these have been closely fought games. So it was a fitting end to this season that this was our last league fixture. A spirited game, played with tremendous sportsmanship, Lawford won 6-5. Sadly, Little Oakley has decided to combine their Reds and Blues next season and while we wish them well for the future, we will miss our local derby. Last month the youth and junior section of the club successfully renewed its Charter Status. Launched in 2001, the FA Charter Standard initiative seeks to improve grassroots football and to make a difference in the local communities around the country. The youth and junior section has held Charter Status since 2006, while the senior section has held Charter Status since 2009. If you are interested in playing football for Lawford FC or supporting the club in any way, please visit our website for further information: www.lawfordfc.co.uk

CHURCH NEWS

An all-age Anglican Church meeting in St Mary & St Michael’s Church, Mistley, and St Lawrence’s Church, Bradfield

SERVICES FOR JUNE

Are you feeling stuck? Whether it’s in every-day life, in jobs, dealing with money, in relationships, or in trying to pick someone to vote for in the general election, we all sometimes feel like there’s no good way ahead. We can all face situations where every possibly scenario feels bad, or pointless, or impossible, like standing in front of a vast ocean with no way ahead. Hopeless and stuck.

10.30am Joint Worship with Communion & Treasure Seekers*at Mistley

But as we celebrate Pentecost this month, we’re reminding ourselves of the truth about Jesus: He didn’t go back to heaven because He had had enough of us. He went back to heaven because He couldn’t get enough of us, so that His Spirit could be sent instead, making Him not just accessible to all those around Him, but to everyone who calls on His name, then and now. So when we’re standing in front of a sea of impossibility, we can know that He longs to stands with us, and He will make a way, leading us back into hope. We’re going to be celebrating and thinking more about our Red Sea roadmaking God this month, including an open air all-age service with all the churches in the area for Trinity Sunday (see below), as well as all our usual programme of services and events. Please see details below and either drop in to either church building or contact the office to find out about everything else that’s on. Please don’t forget to check the website and publications in and around the churches for more information and events. Treasurer: Mr Gordon King Church Bookings: David Shearmur, 01206 395263 The Easter Art Show and Sale again proved very successful over the four days with a good percentage of pictures sold and more than £1,700 profit for church funds. The Easter Monday Book Fair was also very well supported and with weekly sales raised nearly £700. This all added to the Easter Day Church Service which included baptisms and Holy Communion, making the premises a hive of activity. A fashion show organised by Manningtree Methodist Church with the cooperation of Edinburgh Woollen Company from Ipswich drew a large audience to the church hall. Models from the church paraded the latest styles most professionally. Church funds were added to by a raffle and refreshments which raised £120 and provided an entertaining evening. BRANTHAM & CAPEL METHODIST CHURCHES ON ANTICIPATION (Holidays and Marriage) My daughter announced her engagement to a fellow doctor on Mount Carmel in Israel – a wedding next year. We are planning a holiday in France this summer, our first overseas holiday for a while. Also there are challenging and exciting things to anticipate on the work front. In his book The Art of Travel, Alain de Botton talks about the anticipation of planning holidays, focussed on the images in brochures of the resort, beaches and weather. We are caught up in anticipation and forget the journey to get there, the packing, the traffic, the airport queues, the humidity, passport control and the dusty roads. Even when we have arrived (and if everything is as good as the brochures describe), Alain de Botton says “a momentous but until then overlooked fact was making its first appearance: that I had inadvertently brought myself with me to the island.” He describes a “number of other incongruous and unrelated elements, a sore throat, worry at not having informed a colleague that I would be away, pressure across both temples and a rising need to visit the bathroom.” The holiday brochures show an ideal, but it leaves out the imperfect you being in the picture! We always have ourselves in the picture, our aches and pains, our high or low self-esteem, our frustrations and hurts, our anxieties and fears. In marriage you anticipate love and harmony, but again it’s bringing two imperfect people together and it may not all be sweetness and love. I do not do holiday planning, but I do offer marriage preparation, and will do that for my daughter and future son-in-law. I am also happy to talk with individuals or couples about the stresses and strains in relationships, even to talk with individuals about the imperfect you. I am so grateful that I am known by God with all my imperfections, but that he still loves me and gives an amazing degree of peace and contentment. I can enjoy the moment and the people I am with, whether at home or in some exotic location. Do contact me. They also single out the importance of standing up for those suffering persecution on grounds of faith around the world. Faith, they argue, has a unique role to play in preventing extremism and religiously motivated violence. “Contemporary politics needs to re-evaluate the importance of religious belief.” May God grant us all wisdom as we go to the polls, and protect us from evil, Rev Steph

RAMBLING RECTOR The election season has only just begun and already I will be very glad never to hear the words “strong and stable” or “rigged economy” ever again! The tone of debates has sadly been strident and to my mind, rude. For the first time in many years I am undecided how to vote. To me the importance of a strong opposition cannot be overstated. A government without checks and balances is a dangerous animal. When our rulers lose contact with us, the people, and stop listening we are all threatened. In a pastoral letter, our Archbishops have raised concerns about the NHS, housing and poverty. They encourage voters to remember Britain’s Christian history and heritage as well as a concern for future generations and God’s creation as they make their decisions. At a time when political differences may be felt more intensely than ever, the Archbishops insist that Christians’ “first obligation” during the election and beyond is to pray for those standing for office. But Christians also have a duty to play an active part in the process, they add. Following divisions of recent years, they call for reconciliation drawing on shared British values based on cohesion, courage and stability. The letter also calls for space for faith in political debate and says politicians must be free to speak openly about their own beliefs and convictions and treated fairly for doing so. They call for a generous and hospitable welcome to refugees and migrants but also warn against being “deaf to the legitimate concerns” about the scale of migration into some communities. www.keepingintouchwith.com/manningtree

CHURCH NEWS the spiritual realm and eternity. What source of authority do you trust there? Why not join us at our services in June? After celebrating Pentecost at the beginning of the month, we will begin a study of Psalm 119 and explore how it claims that God’s Word, the Bible, is a ‘Rich and Precious Jewel’ and the best source of authority about this life. Meeting at Old St Michael’s School on Trinity Road, Manningtree ‘Fake News’ and Political Campaigning – it’s enough to get anyone all hot and bothered! As I write this in early May, the heat wave I was expecting has not arrived. Maybe I read the wrong forecast, maybe I’m living in a dream world, maybe I should know better having experienced a fair few English summers! The news is getting a bit like the weather forecast at the moment. Sometimes it’s right, but it can always change. But that does beg the question, what source of authority do we trust? And what do we do about it when it lets us down? Do we get hot and bothered (not likely this May by the looks of things), or do we just ignore it and carry on. Are we ever bold enough to decide that we really ought to change to another news channel or forecast? And what about the bigger things in life? Let’s face it, if we don’t like the next government we’ll get to vote again in five years’ time. But there are some decisions that have lifelong consequences and even beyond, into

The weekly newsletter, with weekly mass times, is displayed in the cabinet alongside the front door. Catholic Commentary In the church calendar the Easter season continues through to Pentecost, the Sunday that falls 50 days after Easter Sunday, formerly called Whitsun in this country. This year it falls on June 4. Christians borrowed the celebration date from the Jewish Feast of Weeks (Shavuot in Hebrew) and it marks the event described in the Acts of the Apostles Ch. 2 called 26

Descent of the Holy Spirit on the first followers of Jesus ‘all gathered together in one place’. This occurrence is sometimes referred to as the birthday of the church. In our parish we have been holding a six-week course to help unwrap the gift of the Holy Spirit given to us in baptism and confirmation. There are some who regard Christianity as outmoded and irrelevant and would like to see it eliminated, especially in schools. We should recall that religion has always been part of being human and continues to find expression, unfortunately sometimes in perverted ways. Let us, however, also acknowledge that the church is the largest charitable organisation in the world. Events & Diary Dates The 100 Club Draw took place on Sunday, May 21 when three lucky winners shared £147. The next draw takes place on Sunday, June 18. The club was set up to raise much needed funds to support the life and mission of our parish and has grown from strength to strength since its launch. New members are always very welcome and the newsletter, that includes an application form, can be found at the rear of the church or at: www.stmarksparish.org.uk Every last Thursday of the month a Bring & Buy Coffee Morning takes place from 10.30am-noon at Viv & Wyn’s home, Paddock Gate, Whitehorse Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TR. We are raising funds for Parish Room refurbishment and all are very welcome to join us. The next event is on Thursday, June 29. Supporting our local hospice All parishioners are asked to collect used postage stamps and tp place them in the box at the rear of the church to help support the outstanding work of our local hospice. Catholic Chaplain at Ipswich Hospital Fr Adrian Gates is the Catholic Chaplain at Ipswich Hospital (01473 726701). Please contact him if you or a Catholic is in or due to go into hospital and requires his services. All are very welcome to attend Holy Family services. It’s not necessary to be a Catholic and enquiries about the Catholic Faith are always welcome. Please contact the Presbytery, as above, or a local person whom you know is a Catholic. CHERRY KITCHEN MAKEOVERS EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE PERFECT KITCHEN I established Cherry Kitchen Makeovers because not everyone wants or can afford a whole new kitchen. Also quite honestly there’s no need for the extra hassle and expense a lot of the time. I knew that with a great range of top quality products, hard work and good customer service we would be a success. I also feel that more and more people like to use local family run businesses as they get a more personal service. Of course I like working with my son Ben as it’s hard to get him round for Sunday dinner nowadays. I even managed to get my other son, Ross, back from university last summer to help paint the new showroom! Our doors are fitted to your original kitchen carcass with minimum hassle, a solution which costs approximately half the price of a full refit. In certain kitchens there is only so much that can be done with the layout and it simply needs an update. We can suggest plenty of ways to create a completely new look while still making the best use of the available space. If you want to breathe new life into your old kitchen call us today on 01206 615858/932466 or visit www.cherry-kitchens.co.uk to request a free brochure.
