NEWS COMEDIANS ARE COMING TO NEEDHAM MARKET CHARITY MATCH Comedians Jack Whitehall and Russell Howard are heading to Needham Market with a host of former Arsenal stars during the run-in to the Ryman Premier campaign for a charity match in aid of cerebral palsy awareness. Tickets are now on sale for the arrival of Arsenal’s official charity XI, the comic duo and a host of other celebrities and former players with the Premier League giants at Bloomfields on Sunday, March 19. NEWS REPORT FROM KEITH WELHAM

District Councillor for Stowupland and Creeting St Peter I must start by saying how much I enjoyed the recent ‘Pub Night’ in the church hall and thank all who helped make the evening a success, including those who made the pies and those who arranged beverages appropriate for such an evening. I can also recommend the coffee mornings (second Saturday of every month) there. The cakes are special!

BREAKING NEWS! This year’s raft race will take place on Sunday, June 4 and the theme is The Swinging 60s. The start of an era: Coronation Street, Doctor Who, Thunderbirds and Top of the Pops, cash machines, colour television, audio cassettes and touch tone telephones, winning the World Cup, The Bluebird and The Berlin Wall, JFK, Nelson Mandela and Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard, mini-skirts and go-go boots. So, brush off your raft (or make one), grab three friends and put your thinking caps on. This year’s event promises to be another great family day out.

STOWMARKET CARNIVAL 2017 Carnival needs a Queen, a Prince and two Princesses and to find them we have organised a whole day of fun to help us find the lucky people who will represent our town for the next year. So come down, have some fun and help us find a worthy Carnival Court for 2017! The first of this year’s amazing arena acts can now be announced. The Vikings are coming to Stowmarket and there’s going to be violence! But don’t worry folks, Blodorn Englar combat re-enactment group who depict a 9th-10th century mercenary band will be fighting full contact in the safety of our arena. You may have read that parking enforcement is to be handed over from the police to district councils. From April 2019 enforcement will be managed from three offices – East Suffolk, West Suffolk and Ipswich. Mid Suffolk will be covered from one of these three. The administration has published its budget for 2017/18. This will require an increase in council tax of 5p per week for a Band D property, more for Band E and above and less for Bands A, B and C. Council house rents will reduce by 1%, as required by government legislation; the average rent reduction will be 84p a week. Garage rents will go up by 74p a week and sheltered housing service charges will go up by a maximum of £4 a week. Spending on capital projects will be cut by £1.5 million in 2017/18 and for the following four years. For many years the council has failed to meet its capital spending targets and there have been large underspends of revenue expenditure. As an example, the large underspend on housing adaptions to assist disabled residents has been blamed on the shortage of occupational therapists to undertake checks and plan housing adaptions. We must find a way to speed up this work. Green Party councillors have prepared an alternative budget, a key theme of which is to regenerate and enhance Stowmarket, making the town an inspiring place for residents, visitors and businesses. We would like to see an introduction of 30 minutes free parking in town car parks and free parking one day a week after 3pm. A local history sculpture trail, with sponsorship from local businesses, will encourage visitors in the same way as Pigs Gone Wild in Ipswich during 2016. These initiatives should bring more money into shops and businesses in Stowmarket. We are also pushing for the council to build new homes and to work with landowners, developers and builders to unlock land that has planning permission but is not coming forward. Currently there are permissions for 2,300 homes granted but they are not being built. Housing completions are way below the numbers needed and there is a desperate shortage of affordable housing and private rental homes. £2million could be used to get homes built; besides the obvious benefit to residents who need to be able to upsize, downsize or buy or rent their first home, New Homes Bonus and council tax income from the new homes would show a return on the investment and improve the council’s financial position. Let’s Walk A programme of walks around the Stowmarket area is being developed to encourage walking in the town and surrounding villages. I have suggested a route around part of Stowupland and walks are planned for April 4, 12 and 25. Make a note of these dates and hear about the history of the village. Councillor Jennings will accompany the walkers to give information, especially historical facts, at points along the route. A leaflet will also be produced to encourage people to come to the village and, perhaps, enjoy refreshment at the start of finish of their walk.

STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Friday, March 17, 6.45am: Networking Breakfast at The Mix, 127 Ipswich Street, Stowmarket

It will surprise nobody to hear that the move to Endeavour House has been put back to September. I am optimistic that the Public Access Point in Stowmarket will be open well before then. It is expected to be at 54 Ipswich Street, the present home of the Realise Futures Learning Centre. There is parking for cycles and blue badge holders very close by and bus stops and public car parks are reasonably convenient.

Please come and meet me if you have any local issues to raise. I welcome the chance to meet with any resident. I will be in the church hall from 6-7pm on March 20. I will be very lonely if nobody comes along, so even if you don’t have a burning issue, feel free to come along for a chat, and stay for the parish council meeting which will follow at 7.30pm. NEWS SNOASIS PARISH ALLIANCE (SPA) As I’m sure you are all aware, Onslow Suffolk Ltd has put in an application to Mid Suffolk District Council for SnOasis Reserved Matters to be considered – Planning Application no. 4494/16. This is not a renewal of the original planning approval, which still stands, but is the detail of such matters as design, appearance, transport, drainage and ecological mitigation. Full details can be found at: www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/planning-and-building/planning/snoasis

MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCILLORS MIKE NORRIS & WENDY MARCHANT COUNCIL OFFICES MOVING TO IPSWICH Babergh and Mid Suffolk have approximately 570 staff, including depot and part time workers. A total of 380 staff will go to Endeavour House in Ipswich where there will be 240 work stations on one floor, Gold & Lion Block, plus meeting rooms.

Claydon and Whitton, Barham, Bramford, Great Blakenham, Somersham, Little Blakenham Parish Councils and Needham Market Town Council, along with Nettlestead and Baylham Parish Meetings have now formally joined the Snoasis Parish Alliance, a group to work together to consider the details of the Snoasis Reserved Matters and to exert more influence than we can as individual organisations.

There will only be two public face-to-face access points in the Babergh and Mid Suffolk districts, in Stowmarket and Sudbury, plus ‘landing points’ within the district for staff working out on site to use. These will be in buildings which the council already owns, like sheltered accommodation, but details have not yet been confirmed.

Of course, individual councils will still be consulting with their residents and making their own responses to Mid Suffolk District Council, but we believe that sharing both expertise and the workload will benefit both councils and residents.

Mid Suffolk & Babergh are putting forward their submission to the Boundary Commission of how many district councillors there should be in future. They propose 31 councillors for Babergh (now 43) and 34 for Mid Suffolk (now 40). Mid Suffolk has a bigger population. The submission includes the words “potentially work towards becoming a single council”.

We have been informed that further information on reserved matters will be supplied by the developer at the end of February. We are committed to working with Mid Suffolk District Council to obtain the information that is necessary for councils to be able to make informed and constructive comments, so as soon as the details arrive, the SPA will begin work to scrutinise them. It is also intended that existing expertise amongst the councils will be used to analyse and comment on the vast amount of very detailed (and sometimes very technical) information that we are expecting the developer to provide. Work has already begun to plan for this. There isn’t much new to report this month due to delays in receiving information. As more detail on reserved matters is received and the SPA begins to work on its response, our webpage (hosted on the Great Blakenham Parish Council website) will be regularly updated: http://greatblakenham.onesuffolk.net/snoasis-parish-alliance For further information, please email Janet Gobey, the clerk to the SPA: snoasispa@icloud.com Snoasis Parish Alliance Chairman Steve Plume

NUMBER OF DISTRICT COUNCILLORS

When Wendy asked at Mid Suffolk’s Full Council how this could be done when it’s not what the people voted for, she was told because of the content in the government’s ‘Devolution’ white paper. The submission to the Boundary Commission also states: “It is anticipated therefore, in the light of the continuous journey of integration between BMSDC, that up to half of BMSDC’s council meetings may be held as simultaneous meetings from 2019, if not before.” So it does sound as if when Babergh and Mid Suffolk move to Endeavour House they will merge into one council. This submission was accepted by Mid Suffolk’s Full Council on February 23 as were the budget proposals which were reported to the town council on January 1, as proposed in Mid Suffolk’s Executive papers on January 9, neither of which we supported. JUBILEE LADIES CHOIR We are now well into rehearsing for our spring concert featuring songs from the shows and the world of light entertainment. There will also be special guest performers. The concert will be held on Friday, April 7 at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church in Stowmarket. Tickets will be £7 including light refreshments and there will also be a raffle.

For tickets, which can also be purchased on the door, please contact: 01449 740439/740720 We like to donate some of the proceeds from our concerts to charity and this time we have voted to support the Alzheimer’s Society. So many families are affected by this dreadful disease so please come along and support the choir and this very worthwhile charity.

NEWS / OUT & ABOUT CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE Saturday, March 25 is our Easter Chocolate Bingo (see below for more details). This event sold out in 2016 so get your tickets early! A hot meal is provided in the interval followed by scrummy deserts. There will also be a free competition and a magnificent raffle with more than 30 prizes, all Easter and chocolate themed. If you want a really good family night out where children are welcome, a full bar is available and you get fed as well, all for only £6 (half price for under 10s), tickets are now available from the Charity Shop on Coddenham Road, Needham Market, from Stowmarket Tourist Information or 01449 760343 / 07974 424374. Can you help us to help our children? As many of you may know, the children arrive with only the clothes they are wearing. We are busy collecting ‘nearly new’ items which we give to the children on arrival. They take clothes not only for themselves but also for siblings at home. If you have any clothing suitable for ages six to 13 that you would like to donate we would be extremely grateful. Donations can be left at the charity shop or collected by calling the numbers above. Having brought a second group at Christmas our finances have been hit even harder with the news that the children’s visas are to increase sharply due to the dollar exchange rate as they have to be paid for in dollars. Last year the price increased to €85 per passenger, this year it will be €110.80 so we are going to have to watch our budget even more carefully this year. Something that would be of great help to us is supermarket vouchers as we provide all lunches and refreshments for the children when they are with us during the day. Also, the school have now ‘adopted’ an official school uniform which we have been sourcing from Asda so Asda vouchers could be used towards getting some of the uniform to keep with the same style as already supplied. If you are interested in finding out more about the charity in general, or maybe you would like to help in our charity shop, please do get in touch. Thank you to everyone for your support as always.

NEEDHAM MARKET SOCIETY The committee was delighted to welcome more than 50 members and visitors on January 25 when Stuart Bowell presented a talk entitled The Round Tower Churches of East Anglia. There are around 180 such towers surviving in our region, some dating from Saxon times, but the reasons for the circular style are lost in time. Some say that the devil lurks in corners, but Stuart suggested that the lack of dressed stone and the use of flints and pebbles may be a more logical explanation for the shape. He had a wealth of slides to illustrate the many individual features integral to the structures, but all were built using the slow-setting lime mortar so necessary for the local building materials. This meant that the towers were built over a number of years allowing the mortar to set at each stage of building. You can see examples of these unusual towers by visiting local churches at Onehouse, Beyton, and a little further afield at Ramsholt. Our next meeting is on March 22 at 7.30pm in the Burton Room at Needham Market Community Centre when we hope to meet Dr Rhodri Gardner, Needham’s very own professional archaeologist. Come and hear about the varied work the team carry out and some of their interesting projects. We look forward to seeing you there – new members always welcome. www.keepingintouchwith.com/needham

Mame Dennis, played by Meryl Bunce (pictured), is glamorous, well-to-do and lives a carefree life of pleasure in New York at the peak of the 1920s.

Out of the blue she is surprised by a ‘wonderful present’, her 10-yearold orphan nephew, named Patrick. Being needed is something new for Mame and it completely changes her life. As a free spirit, Mame is determined to prevent Patrick becoming a conformist prisoner of the establishment and so introduces him to her free-wheeling lifestyle. However, when she loses her fortune in the Wall Street Crash of 1929, Mame faces destitution and has to try working for a living, with some hilarious and unexpected results. The show was a long running hit both on New York’s Broadway and in London’s West End. Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society’s productions frequently enjoy sell-out success so book your tickets early to avoid disappointment. OUT & ABOUT CASTLETON BRASS A brass band based in Eye is hoping to build on its recent success at the upcoming London and Southern Counties regional competition. Castleton Brass has qualified for the Brass Band Championship Finals for the last two years and is the reigning fourth section champion for the area. Due to their success, they have now progressed to the third section and on March 18 they will be competing against 13 other bands. Unfortunately, this competition will be their last with their current conductor. Peter Ryan has made the decision to stand down after nine years leading the band. The band are hoping to find a new conductor to start after the competition and are holding trials for anyone interested in the band and helping them to progress further. The band averages 15 performances a year with a mixture of concert, fetes and an occasional church service. The band is an enthusiastic and welcoming mix of brass and percussion players, with a third of the band being under 18. Anyone interested in joining the band, either as a player or as conductor, should contact the band secretary, Christine Wade: info@castletonbrass.org.uk

IPSWICH AND DISTRICT SOROPTIMIST CLUB Our members live all around the area but we share an interest in what is happening in our county town. In January we learned a lot from our very entertaining speakers about Ipswich Citizens Advice Bureau. They gave us a picture of the different people who come to them and of the types of issues that they seek help with. We were impressed by the detail and reliability of the information which their national system provides for their advisers and the respect and empathy which we sensed in their approach to their clients. Volunteers play a valued role in many aspects of their work. February was focussed on our conference at the University of Suffolk in celebration of Lighthouse’s 40th anniversary. As In Touch’s submission deadline is the actual day of our event, we can only say that we have everything crossed! We are very much looking forward to our regular monthly meeting on March 8 when Abby Grace from Suffolk Refugee Support will speak about experiences of the Syrian refugees in Ipswich over the past year. This is such an important topic for all of us locally that we wonder if other women would like to come and hear her. You would be most welcome. Please call Jackie on 01473 659314 for directions or for more information about Soroptimism.

OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS STOWMARKET & DISTRICT PROBUS CLUB A monthly gathering (first Tuesday of the month) of retired professional and business persons with presentations from speakers from all walks of life on a varied selection of subjects, people, projects and events. In the last year alone there have been presentations on Lord Nelson’s love life, Bulmer Brick Company, the creation of bronze statutes including Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alf Ramsey, Mid Suffolk Light Railway and Sir Francis Drake. Time is also made for members to meet each other along with tea/coffee and a biscuit, and every quarter a luncheon is arranged for members and guests at local venues. Visits to places of interest in 2016 included a tour of RAF Wattisham, a four-day trip to Cheshire and a very moving experience at the National Arboretum. This year we have plans for a day visit to Langham Dome incorporating a journey on the North Norfolk Railway in May and a five day trip to Bournemouth in September with potential visits to the Portsmouth Dockyard, Beaulieu Motor Museum and the RNLI Headquarters in Poole. Annual membership in 2016 was £12. All trips are costed out to breakeven and a good deal is negotiated by a member of the committee. New members are welcome. For details please contact David Robson: daviderobson@gmail.com Our monthly meetings are held at the RBL Club on Tavern Street, Stowmarket, 10.30am-noon. David Griffith will present a talk on education at our March meeting.

HENLEY PRE-SCHOOL We are now over half way through the term and the children are thoroughly enjoying a range of arts, crafts and cooking. They had great fun trying new foods and oriental inspired crafts for Chinese New Year and in the run up to Valentine’s Day they baked heart shaped jam tarts and made glittery paper hearts for their parents. As the weather warms up the children will be tending to their flowerbeds. They will be working with a gardener who will show them how to sow, grow and tend vegetables. They plan to grow radishes, tomatoes, lettuces and some delicious strawberries. Following the success of our Stay and Play week last term, we will be holding another in the week commencing Monday, March 13. Parents and carers will soon receive an invite, so keep your eyes peeled. We would also like to thank everyone who attended, cooked a curry, or donated a raffle prize or supplies for our quiz and curry night in February. It was a fantastic evening enjoyed by everyone, and raised some much needed funds to go towards modernising our children’s learning journals.

SPORT NEEDHAM MARKET FOOTBALL CLUB

AIKIDO LEGEND TO VISIT THE UK

At the time of writing the First team are currently in third place of The Ryman Premier League, the Reserves are in 19th place in The Thurlow Nunn Division One League and the Youth team are currently in seventh place in The Thurlow Nunn Youth League Central Division.

Following young Alec’s story in the last edition about his trip to Europe to train with world-renowned Aikido teacher Christian Tissier, soon the rest of the club will have the opportunity to share the experience as he comes to the UK to teach a special seminar. On Sunday, March 19 Brighton Aikikai will host Christian at Medway Park Judo Centre and we have an open invitation for students to attend.

The First team is having an excellent season, especially compared to last year when they were in a relegation dogfight. By contrast we could finish up in a play-off spot for a chance of playing in The National League South next season. There are plenty of matches to play and points up for grabs so hopefully our Reserve and Youth teams can go on a run of form and move up their leagues. On Tuesday, March 14 the club is hosting the semi-final of The Suffolk FA Premier Cup between Newmarket Town and Lowestoft Town, with a 7.45pm kick off. The next evening the First team take on Leiston in the other semi-final. The match is being played at Woodbridge Town FC, also with a 7.45pm start. On Sunday, March 19 club is hosting a charity match between an Arsenal FC Celebrity Team and a Needham Market FC Team, raising funds for Teigan who is five years and suffers with quadriplegic cerebral palsy having contracted meningitis as a baby. For details please see page 3. FORTHCOMING FIXTURES FIRST TEAM Saturday, March 4: Tonbridge Angels (A), 3pm Tuesday, March 7: Merstham (H), 7.45pm Saturday, March 11: Enfield Town (H), 3pm Wednesday, March 15: Leiston @ Woodbridge Town FC, 7.45pm Saturday, March 18: Hendon (A), 3pm Saturday, March 25: Havant & Waterlooville (H), 3pm Saturday, April 1: Staines Town (A), 3pm RESERVE TEAM Saturday, March 4: Wisbech St Mary (H), 3pm Friday, March 24: Framlingham Town (A), 7.45pm Tuesday, April 4: Holland (H), 7.45pm YOUTH TEAM Thursday, March 2: Framlingham Town (A), 7.45pm Thursday, March 9: Ipswich Wanderers (H), 7.45pm Thursday, March 23: Walsham-Le-Willows (A), 7.45pm Thursday, March 30: Woodbridge Town (H), 7.45pm Fixtures are subject to change and will be updated accordingly should this occur. STOWMARKERS JUNIOR NETBALL CLUB Spring is very nearly here and our juniors certainly have a spring in their step. Our Saturday sessions have seen an influx of players, which is fantastic, and the older junior players are doing really well in the South Suffolk League. The club’s home ground is at Needham Market Community Centre which allows us to capture young players from surrounding schools in Stowmarket, Stowupland, Debenham, Claydon, Needham Market and Creeting. Stowmarkers is renowned for taking part in community events and this year we are pleased to say that we will be taking part in the Stowmarket Carnival procession. Last year there was talk that it may have been the end of the Stowmarket Carnival, but we are thrilled that there is a new committee on-board and that this big event will be taking place. It’s a fantastic opportunity for all our players to get involved either by making decorations or their costumes. If you would like to join a club like this please visit: www.netballclubstowmarkers.wordpress.com

Tissier Shihan started training in aikido as a child in France back in 1962. At just 18 years old he made the move to Tokyo, training at the Aikikai Hombu dojo, the home of Aikido. He received 7th dan in 1998 and is among the mere handful of westerners who have been given the title Shihan by the Aikikai. His courses are always extremely popular worldwide and this one is expected to be extremely well attended. To make the most of this popularity, the venue is set to be the excellent Medway Judo Centre. The centre boasts two large, permanent matted areas, both of which are international standard, and the centre has been accredited by London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) as an official pre-games training camp venue. This combination of teacher and venue make this a course not to be missed. For anyone interested in trying Aikido, beginners are always welcome. Classes run from 7pm on Sundays or 8.15pm on Thursdays at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre. For more information, please email aikido@precepts.co.uk or visit: www.satomikai.co.uk

SCORPION ACADEMY The Scorpion Academy teaches universal karate, kickboxing, mma and muay thai and with 10 classes running weekly there is always something available to everyone. Separate junior and senior classes ensure that you receive the very best in tuition from our highly qualified and motivated blackbelt instructors and masters. Each of the four styles that we teach offers you the chance to be pushed hard and to reach your ultimate fitness, technical and confidence levels. We hold three coloured belt exams and two blackbelt gradings throughout the year as well as interclub sparring tournaments, fundraising events and seminars with top martial artists. The academy was recently awarded a Hall of Fame award from a much respected American martial arts association for School of the Year. This was a great honour and one that we are very proud of. Head coach Mark JR Trent, 8th dan blackbelt, is president and founder of the UFKKA worldwide association and vice president of the British Tae Kwon Do Association. This year we celebrate our 50th anniversary. The BTA was founded in 1967 by Grandmaster Tony Quigley, a legend within the tae kwon do world. From May 5-8 we are hosting a very special martial arts training weekend in Great Yarmouth to celebrate this historic event and with many families from all over the UK travelling to meet up this promises to be an amazing weekend. All grades/belts that are earned under the Scorpion Academy are fully recognised by the UFKKA and BTA which in turn are worldwide recognised by 159 martial art organisations in 23 countries. UFKKA membership is completely free and is open to all martial art clubs and association and indeed individuals to join. We offer one month of free training to all new members joining. SPORT / CHURCH NEWS MODERN ARNIS – RETURNING TO THE SOURCE Classes are back up and running following a few weeks break while Master Eric Amada returned to the Philippines over the Christmas and New Year period. During his stay, Eric had the opportunity to visit with Grand Master Rodel Dagooc and Senior Master Rogelio Aguillon (now Sandakan Arnis). Eric was able to train with Sandakan Arnis in spite of his teacher’s busy schedule. He also visited Grand Master Rodel Dagooc who took Eric to his new Arnis village near his house where he displayed all his training equipment, sticks and knives. During this visit, Eric obtained new sticks for the club featuring GM Dagooc’s personal carvings. A trip home is great opportunity to share some practice time alongside the good friends he grew up training with for so many years. It was a very busy time for everyone, but most of the members of the Art Foundation Philippines made it to the reunion at NBI Gym in Manilla to practice Arnis and Aikido together again. As part of his trip, Eric also took some time out to visit Quiapo in Manilla. When Eric was growing up, Quiapo was the go-to place for martial arts and is still very popular for training equipment. Armed with a big list of sizes and some serious luggage space, Eric secured genuine Modern Arnis uniforms for everyone in the class. The first class back saw everyone kitted out in their new, matching uniforms and the atmosphere in the room was palpably different, with everyone giving that little bit of extra focus and effort. Though many of the members have trained with Eric on and off for many years, it’s still a relatively new group, and this really helped everyone to feel part of something bigger than them. With an increasing sense of unity and rapidly increasing numbers, it feels like this is going to be our year. If you are interested in trying Filipino Martial Arts, classes are taught in Stowupland by Maestro Eric Amada, one of the most respected (and liked) Arnis teachers in the UK The class caters for all levels of experience and complete beginners are always welcome, as are students from other arts looking to supplement their existing skills. Classes take place at Stowupland Sports Centre at the high school on Tuesday evenings from 7-8.30pm. For more information, contact Eric on ericamada@hotmail.com or visit: www.modernarnis.uk

NEEDHAM MARKET BOWLS CLUB Our winter socials are going really well. January 20 was extremely successful thanks to Stowmarket Strummers ukulele band who were warmly applauded. We look forward to seeing them again on March 24 when food will be provided by a mobile fish and chip van, another new venture. Non-members are always welcome at our socials; see contact details below. The outdoor season is fast approaching and our dedicated green team will shortly be hard at work ensuring the green is in the best possible condition. NMBC is calling all you non-bowlers to attend our Meet and Greet on Saturdays, April 22 and 29 at 10.30am. Please come along and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and an opportunity to bowl. Basic instruction will be provided and if you just want to watch and chat that’s fine. Although bowls is an ideal sport for an active older person, remember: YOU ARE NEVER TOO YOUNG TO BOWL. STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB Well, nobody saw that coming. Roger and Rafa reaching the men’s final with Serena and Venus competing in the women’s final. The odds of all four of these 30 years or over superstars reaching the last matches were 5000:1. I suppose that makes a very good argument for talent and experience over youth and exuberance. Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic had early exits at the Australian Open so very soon the path was cleared for a record breaking and rather nostalgic final two days. I expect we won’t see it happen again with these true greats of tennis, but a big part of me wishes it will. Our club’s very own superstars have been competing in the regular winter league doubles matches and by the time this is published should have finished their season. We will have to wait and see which pairs have earned promotion or stayed static for next year, but the early signs are good with most pairs having secured enough points to at least stay in their current division. The next big tournament for us older players will be the Easter Veterans event at Ipswich Sports Club. We had a good showing for the Christmas matches so should be able to encourage a few more to get into this exciting event. The standard and depth at Stowmarket in the 35+ age groups is as good as any club in the county and we’ll be looking to get some more wins and exposure for the club. As usual, our dome has been keeping us all dry and running around so all coaching and playing activity is busy. We have several open club sessions during mornings and evenings so if you want to come along and play we can organise someone to accompany you and sort out a set or two. If you get in touch then we can decide which session suits you. Junior fun sessions have been particularly well supported over the winter break, probably due to the lack of any really cold weather, and this is the best entry point for any new children wanting to start. So, lots going on and lots to look forward to! See you on court. Senior Club Coach Chris Cunningham chris@chriscoaching.plus.com

HOME WORSHIP Andy Malcolm from the Fishermen’s Mission came to lead Home Worship in February. He told us of the wonderful work they do, Illustrated with pictures on the television screen. He gave an example of a retired widower fisherman living on his own, elderly and frail. After a hospital stay, the hospital social worker contacted the Fishermen’s Mission to ask if they could help him get his home sorted our before he was discharged, and a care package put in place. So a team from the Fishermen’s Mission cleaned the whole house out, provided a new bed, new oven and all the basic essentials which he needed. Andy also told of how the Fishermen’s Mission helped a fisherman who had lost his leg in an accident at sea adjust back to a normal life when he had an artificial leg fitted. The Fishermen’s Mission is based in ports which fishermen use, which are usually different ports to the ones where the Mission to Seamen is based. The Fishermen’s Mission just covers this country, but the Mission to Seamen is worldwide. We sang We Have an Anchor Fast and Sure and read the gospel story of Jesus calming the wind and the waves. Home Worship always meets at 10am on the first Monday of the month at 137 High Street, Needham Market IP6 8DH / 01449 720965. All are welcome as this is an outreach group. After the short service, we have tea/coffee and a friendly chat. Wendy Marchant

WINTER COFFEE MORNINGS IN CHURCH

www.christchurchneedhammarket.co.uk

We will be holding a coffee morning in church on Saturday, March 4 from 9.30-11.30am.

On March 1 Christchurch says goodbye to The Reverend John Boardman who had been our Methodist minister for a couple of years and welcomes The Reverend Rita Carr. Those of you in Stowmarket will already know Rita as she is minister at Stowmarket Methodist Church, and I’m sure the folk of Needham Market will soon get to know her.

LENT SOUP LUNCHES We will be hosting lent soup lunches in the Ark every Saturday from March 4-April 8 inclusive from noon-1.30pm. The proceeds go to our link diocese in Kagera, Tanzania.

I’m still here though and I’m looking forward to spring and some warmer weather. Yes, I mentioned the weather – again! Apparently the British talk about the weather more often than any other nationality. I wonder whether that’s because it’s interesting, or perhaps it’s a good conversation starter before we get to more personal, political or portentous matters. However, often we don’t get beyond the trivial, and don’t engage in conversations about the things that really concern us. At Christchurch we like to give opportunities for people to talk about deeper issues because we all have questions and concerns. During Lent we will be following a course called Encountered: Meeting God in Ordinary Places. We hope this will give us the chance to delve a little deeper into our understanding of the events of Holy Week and Easter and the way they impact on our own lives. If you’d like to know more please contact me. Please call in to Christchurch’s Coffee Morning on the second Saturday of the month between 10am and noon. Along with coffee and cakes there’s the opportunity to chat – whether that’s about the weather or something deeper! I look forward to seeing you. Reverend Mary Playford
