A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I’ve been particularly fortunate in recent months to find myself in parts of our local countryside I’ve never visited before, not always by choice thanks to roadworks, but I have been reminded anew just how beautiful this part of the country is. Time and time again I have discovered hidden gems, stunning views, beautiful country pubs, lovely farms and cafes and community shops selling fabulous local produce. Despite the fact that I’m from another country I don’t actually like travelling. The actual physical process of getting there, wherever it may be, is enough to put me off going. I’ve done the ‘sun holiday’ and it’s not for me. I don’t function in 38 degree heat and I don’t tan so what’s the point? When we travel abroad we embrace new things, we seek out new adventures and force ourselves to ‘make the most of every minute’, almost to the point of exhaustion. I’ve only tried (and loved) windsurfing in St Lucia but could easily do it regularly here at home. I’ve run into freezing seas in Portugal and Cape Cod (which I’ve pretended to enjoy because that’s what you do on holiday) but barely dip my toes in the North Sea which is 30 minutes from home (and a warm bath). I’ve walked to mountain tops in sweltering heat in Italy, but go everywhere by car in East Anglia. When we stay at home our free time is too easily absorbed by real life responsibilities, but imagine what we might discover if we were to focus the same sense of adventure to a day spent within 10, 20 or even 30 miles from home. The next time you find yourself at a loose end, stick a pin in the map or just take a road you haven’t taken before and allow yourself to enjoy whatever comes your way. This month my colleagues and I are supporting Macmillan’s Big Coffee Morning and welcome readers, contributors and advertisers to pop in for coffee and cake from Monday 26 to Friday, September 30. It would be lovely to meet you. I shall be making scones.

NEWS PCC WANTS TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT POLICING Suffolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore is staging his next series of public meetings across the county through the autumn and is encouraging Suffolk residents to make a note in their diaries. This year, rather than staging a meeting in each of the seven district and borough areas, the PCC and Chief Constable will host a meeting in each of the 18 Safer Neighbourhood areas. The meetings are an opportunity for the public to ask questions of the Commissioner and the Chief Constable and to find out more about policing in the county. Tim Passmore said: “Having direct contact with the people of Suffolk that I represent is extremely important to me. This year we are reflecting the new SNT make-up and staging meetings tailored directly to the needs of our local policing areas. The major review of local policing identified 18 SNT areas and we are increasing our meeting programme to reflect this. “Public engagement is hugely important in this role and I make myself available to anyone who needs to speak to me through one-to-one surgeries and directly via e-mail and on the phone, but it is equally important to have these bigger meetings where people can question me in a more open forum. “I do hope people will accept this invite to come and find out more about policing. Gareth and I will be pleased to discuss any matter that arises. I have set up a meeting in each SNT to make it as easy as possible for people to attend and I am hoping for an open and frank two-way dialogue, so please spread the word as I really want to encourage a good crowd.” Each meeting will involve a quick overview from Tim Passmore and Gareth Wilson and then the public will have an opportunity to ask questions. There will be a senior police officer responsible for policing in the local area to add operational context. All meetings start at 6.30pm and there is no need to book. A meeting will be held at Cedars Hotel, Needham Road, Stowmarket IP14 2AJ on Tuesday, September 20.

THE PAVEMENTS WE WALK ON BY CAROLYN BELCHER GWL Publishing is pleased to announce its latest publication, The Pavements We Walk On by Carolyn Belcher. Set in Liverpool, this new novel tells the story of Maggie, a childhood of love and jealousy, followed by marriage and temporary happiness, which is ended when the realities of life set in. This is a stand-alone novel, although it features the same characters as those in Carolyn’s debut novel, Crocodiles and Angels. Here, she shows how we all tread similar paths, but with differing experiences, and how love and life affect our decisions. Carolyn, a resident of Stowmarket, was herself a teacher in Liverpool before taking early retirement and moving, with her second husband, Colin, to France for a while where she developed her writing. She now supplements her pension as an examiner for A-Level and GCSE drama practical work. Over the years she has had pieces performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and two were Pick of the Day in The Scotsman. In addition, she has had several stories and poems published in magazines and anthologies, both in England and the United States, and a monologue, which was chosen to be performed at a new writing festival, in Reading. The Pavements We Walk On (ISBN: 978-1-910603-31) is available from Amazon and other online retailers.

NEWS STOWMARKET SALVATION ARMY OVER-60s

On Tuesday, July 19, Stowmarket Salvation Army Over-60s said good bye and thank you to Mike and Sheila Caley who have run the club for seven years. During their time they have organised many outings, musical events, meals out and numerous guest speakers on such diverse subjects as Catering the Royal Way and Monopoly – More than just a Game. Major Beverley Robilliard said: “We would like to express our thanks to Mike and Sheila who have done a great job over the last seven years running our over-60s group with their team of helpers. Their friendship and support to the members of the group has been greatly appreciated by all.” The group meets at the Salvation Army Hall from 2-3pm on Tuesday afternoons. For more information about joining the group, please call 01449 614133. Every year Salvation Army volunteers and members go door to door or stand on the high street to collect cash donations to support the charity’s social and community work. This year’s appeal is called The Big Collection in the hope that even more funds will be raised to support the vital work of The Salvation Army to help people in need. One-hundred per cent of all donations will directly support The Salvation Army’s social work to help people in communities across the UK Members of the Stowmarket Salvation Army will be calling in local areas from September 5-16. Major Beverley Robilliard said: “A big thank you to members of the public for their support. We simply couldn’t do the work we do without the generous help of the public.”

CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFE LINE On Sunday, July 31 the group of 18 children returned home, sad to be leaving but happy to be seeing their families again. On Tuesday, August 2 there was a parents’ evening at the school and the parents told of how happy they were that their children had such a wonderful experience. The children were all running around smiling and talking about their fantastic holiday in England. They wanted to pass on a very big thank you to everyone who had made this possible and said they were amazed at the generosity of the English people and how even the second-hand clothing was of such good quality. The children have made Memory Books and will always have these to look back upon as a permanent reminder. A video showing the highlights of the children’s visit can be accessed at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iqt0hcYudE We thank our host families for their work in this project and also the many people who support us throughout the year, raising funds to enable us to bring the children and providing sponsored outings and giving their time to arrange events for them during the visit, providing valuable dental services free of charge, collecting clothing, donating medicines to take home and many other items which all benefit either these children or those at home in Belarus. Ipswich Rotary very generously donated a 15 tog Duvet for each child to help keep them warm in the bitterly cold winters to come and also sponsored a day out Bowling which all of the children enjoyed as they had never been bowling before. We must thank the committee of Needham Market FC who generously allow us the use of the centre during the visit. Also Needham Market Community Centre who not only allow us the use of their mini-bus but also took the children on a fun filled day to Easton Farm Park, Mid Suffolk District Council for a great morning pond dipping and Angels Coffee House for a slap up lunch. Beeston’s Coaches of Hadleigh took the children to Sea Life in Great Yarmouth which was a really fun day out, but also very educational. Stowmarket Lions sponsored the children’s school shoes and also our sports day with a BBQ and pig racing. So many local people have contributed to our cause and supported us in many ways with donations and gifts for the children and via our charity shop. It is not possible to mention everyone here, but without you the children would not have had the wonderful time they have had. This is appreciated more than you will know. On August 28 I will travel to Belarus as part of a group visit on a fact finding tour for one week and then will remain a further week to visit with the children from ‘our’ area. I will bring back news and updates for everyone in the next newsletter. NEWS REPORT FROM KEITH WELHAM

RELAXED, DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY FILM SCREENINGS

District Councillor for Stowupland and Creeting St Peter Many of you will have read in the local press that the MSDC Chief Executive has left the authority and that Deborah Cadman, Chief Executive at Suffolk County Council, is now overseeing MSDC in addition to her role at SCC. You may also have read that the Conservative administration at Babergh and MSDC have indicated a preference for moving staff from Hadleigh and Needham Market to share the SCC office in Ipswich. This preference has been announced without any proper consultation. I am very disappointed that staff do not appear to have been given any information in advance of the apparent decision to move their workplace to Ipswich. If such a move does take place, the local economies of Needham Market and Hadleigh will suffer; staff who currently walk or cycle to work will have to make alternative arrangements.

Suffolk Cinema Network and The Regal in Stowmarket are pleased to present a series of relaxed film screenings, particularly accessible to people living with dementia. A cinema outing is often no longer an option for those suffering with illness and frailty and yet the cinematic experience is great entertainment for all – and can hold strong memories. These screenings have been curated with sensitivity towards those with dementia. Each screening event will have a few volunteers on-hand, a quiet breakout space, raised lighting in the auditorium and intervals in the films. These screenings are open to everyone. Carers must accompany those who require ongoing assistance.

Following the period of consultation on the devolution deal for Norfolk and Suffolk, we await a report on the consultation responses and this should soon be available at: www.eastangliadevo.co.uk

After the first screening on September 7 there will also be an event at The Mix, opposite The Regal, for anyone wishing to get more information about dementia or find local support. This event will feature a dementiafriendly session, information on other activities across Stowmarket and a light lunch.

The next step will be for the Secretary of State to decide whether or not the deal should proceed and, if so, to make an order, subject to parliament approval, to set up a new combined authority. If the order includes a requirement for an elected mayor, an election for the office of mayor of the new authority will take place in May 2017.

For details please contact Fiona Palmer, chair of the SDAA: fiona.palmer@unitedresponse.org.uk / 01473 836160

Consultation on a draft Local Development Order (LDO) for the Food Enterprise Zone, which will be part of the proposed Gateway 14 Business and Enterprise Park (also known as the Mill Lane development), was carried out during July and August and an officer recommendation to members of Planning Referrals Committee to approve an LDO will be considered shortly. The LDO will be broadly in line with the conditions which will form part of the permission for the overall development, but will enable businesses associated with the food industry to gain permission without the need for a full planning application. The site is being marketed, but we have no information on a start date for construction.

Community transport is available through Connecting Communities: connecting.communities@suffolk.gov.uk / 01449 614271 PROGRAMME September 7: Dad’s Army October 5: Mamma Mia November 2: Singin’ in the Rain Each screening event runs from 11.30am-2pm at The Regal, Ipswich Street, Stowmarket IP14 1AY. Tickets are £5.95 a person including free tea and coffee. Buy tickets to the first two films and see the third film free.

Mid Suffolk and Babergh councils have been carrying out a consultation as part of the preparation work for the Joint Local Plan. This has included displays around the theme of Building a Sustainable Future in both Stowmarket and Stowupland where visitors could speak with officers and local members, and give verbal and written feedback. If the devolution deal is agreed in its present terms, it will require Suffolk and Norfolk to provide 200,000 new homes, including affordable homes and will receive £130million from central government; that’s around £650 per home.

Complimentary tickets for carers with a CEA Card: https://ceacard.co.uk/ Tickets can be bought online (www.regalstowmarket.co.uk) in person at The Regal or by phone (01449 612825). Please note that the 3-for-2 offer can only be booked by phone.

The Assessed Housing Need for Mid Suffolk is 11,000. Where should they be built? Stowmarket has seen growth in recent years and that is continuing; Stowupland faces the prospect of 195 new homes and further planning applications for a total of nearly 100 awaiting decision. The whole of the A14 corridor is under pressure and this will continue until MSDC has a sound housing strategy and can demonstrate that there exists a five year supply of land available for housing development.

We are grateful for the ongoing support of Babergh and Mid-Suffolk Councils and the Stowmarket Dementia Action Alliance.

STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Regular networking opportunities for September

Friday, September 2, 10am-noon: Coffee ‘n’ Cake networking at Needham Market Community Centre Friday, September 16, 6.45am: Networking Breakfast at Stowmarket Golf Club Book online at: www.stowmarketchamber.co.uk Additional events Tuesday, September 20, 11.30am-2pm: Joint Suffolk Chamber lunch in the new conference area at Finborough Hall with guest speaker Richard Lister, provost and chief executive at University Campus Suffolk. Members’ rates for Stowmarket Chamber members.

One of the applications for housing development is on land just over the A14 as you travel up from Stowmarket station to Stowupland. You may have seen the ‘Mind the Gap’ posters. It is vital that Stowmarket and Stowupland do not coalesce and retaining a significant undeveloped strip between Stowupland and A14 is essential. This application for 75 homes and the one for 18 houses in Church Road are likely to be considered by MSDC Planning Committee within the next month or so. The growth of Stowmarket and some other settlements has triggered an Electoral Review. Some elected members are now representing many more residents than when the ward boundaries were last established; the growth of Cedars Park has contributed to this. The likely growth in the number of residents in Stowupland will also be taken into account. The review will take up much of this year and next with final recommendations being published in October 2017. The changes will take effect at the next district council elections in May 2019.

Friday, October 28: Quiz Night at Hillside Community Centre

I am keen to keep in touch with the residents I seek to represent so please contact me if you have an issue that I may be able to help you with.

PERSONAL ADVICE, HEALTH & BEAUTY

FLU CLINIC

New school start for the kids – new physical hobby for the adults As the kids get back to school, autumn approaches and those long summer nights drift away, rather than feeling glum and downbeat why not set yourself a new challenge to keep you motivated? It’s often the New Year when guilt encourages taking up a new hobby to beat the Christmas excesses. Why not take it up now and then you can feel less guilty when you have that extra piece of dessert at Christmas. When it comes to taking up a new physical activity, there is something out there for everyone – you just need to find the one for you. You need to enjoy whatever physical hobby you take up so that you continue it for a long time. This often means you need to take up the activity slowly and not drop out because of burnout, overtraining or injury. Injury is common among novices because they are motivated and excited to go further and faster. The initial gains in physical fitness lead to greater zeal to push even harder. Bear in mind that small gains which seem subtle from day to day build up to dramatic changes over several months and years. This is more preferable to a great gain followed by an injury, pain and loss of fitness through not being able to exercise. If the sport you choose has races of varying distances, it’s much better to set some shorter races before attempting a monumental type challenge of something like a marathon.

NO APPOINTMENT REQUIRED

There will be 3 Walk-in Clinics:

Saturday 24th September, 8th October & 29th October 8:30 am to 12:30 pm Stowhealth who are in the “at risk group”

Diabetes Chronic heart disease Chronic kidney disease Chronic liver disease Weakened immune system Severe asthma (on a preventative steroid inhaler) or chronic respiratory disease Transplant patient Spleen removal All pregnant women Carers Chronic neurological disease (such as Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, stroke and transient ischaemic attacks) Children aged between 6 months and 13 years old and who are in the “at risk” group WILL REQUIRE AN APPOINTMENT.

All 2, 3 & 4 year olds are now eligible but will also need to make an appointment.

Please telephone 01449 776000 to make an appointment. If you are not in the “at risk” group, or not a patient of Stowhealth, private flu vaccines are available at £10.00 per vaccine. Please attend the Walk In Clinics on the above dates.

Taking running as an example, find a beginners training programme which has a conservative progression to it. There are many programmes out there which often start people with a combination of walking and running to start with. While this may seem a little too easy to start with, bear with it as your body needs time adapt to the new stresses associated with running. Even though your cardiorespiratory system is not being stressed, the bones, joints and muscles may be overtaxed and weakened due to your newfound activity. Gradually building a solid base from which to progress will ensure safe training and positive progress toward your goals. At some point in your new training you may start to become fatigued. Pay attention to your body and recognise fatigue. It’s a good idea to make sure that you have rest and recovery days regularly when you start to prevent overtraining, fatigue and injury. Committing to do a race is a great way to keep the commitment going. Make sure that you have the proper equipment to take part in your exercise – another good way to prevent injuries. Find a friend who can train with you – you can motivate and support each other. Make your training a habit – ring fence some time in your diary – make it a regular commitment so there are no excuses not to get out there and get fit. For guilt free festivities start good habits now rather than wait for the excess pounds of weight to start talking to you! He names it Audrey II after his fellow shop assistant, on whom he has a crush but who is dating a sadistic dentist. Little does he know that the plant came from outer space and will develop an unquenchable thirst for human blood and ambitions to dominate the world.

At the beginning of the autumn term we turn our thoughts and preparations to Stowmarket Christmas Tree Festival. Many groups and organisations have already signed up to decorate a tree in either the parish church, The Mix or Abbots Hall in the Museum of East Anglian Life. The festival will be open from November 26 in the three venues all within a short walking distance of each other in the town centre. If you would like to be involved in the Christmas Tree Festival by decorating a Christmas tree then please get in touch with the venues direct as soon as possible. Each has a different theme and supplies the tree and there isn’t a charge to decorate one. Individuals and families as well as groups, charities, businesses and schools can apply. The Christmas Tree Festival is a community event that highlights local creativity and shows the town working together. Last year there were 400 trees and the festival attracted 25,000 people which makes it a highlight in the town’s calendar for all to enjoy. The Parish Church: 01449 774652 / stowmarket.parish@btconnect.com The Mix: 01449 745130 / selina@themixstowmarket.com Abbots Hall: 01449 612229 / lisa.harris@eastanglianlife.org.uk Also if you are a business or belong to group in the town centre that would like to get more involved in the Christmas Tree Festival in other ways please contact Judy Eden on 01449 678623 to discuss the options.

OUT & ABOUT TRADITIONAL MUSIC DAY AT THE MUSEUM OF EAST ANGLIAN LIFE

Pictures courtesy of the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust The fifteenth Traditional Music Day takes place on Saturday, September 3 at the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket. It’s a very special sort of day, full of local traditions – this year including an exhibition of dulcimers – and there is also a stunning line-up of guests from across the UK presenting the best in downhome traditional music in the small historic buildings around the museum site. There is plenty for all the family to get involved in: trying out instruments, joining in the singing and dancing, listening to stories and songs and of course, all the usual delights of the museum’s permanent collections and the fabulous 70-acre site. There’s also a good selection of food, local ales and ciders on offer. The guest line-up is headed by singer Nancy Kerr (pictured top left) making a rare solo appearance. Nancy was BBC Radio 2’s Folk Singer of the Year in 2015 and she tours the UK extensively with the Sweet Visitor Band and Simpson, Kerr & Cutting. Other guests include superb

singers Peta Webb and Ken Hall, Roisin White (Singer of the Year 2015 for Ireland’s Gaelic language TV channel TG4), first time appearance of the English Dulcimer Duo (pictured above), festival favourites The Dartmoor Boys, and local Irish musician Michael Sheehy. Site entertainment includes storyteller John Row and one man band Chucklefoot, with stepdancing, ceilidh dancing and music sessions making full use of the museum grounds. Tickets are available in advance until September 1 from the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust. On the day, ordinary museum entrance tickets are available which allow access to the whole of the museum and some of the Traditional Music Day events, including the site entertainment but not the main concerts or other indoor events. In the evening there is just one event – Traditional Night Out in the Tithe Barn – an atmospheric acoustic event in a magical setting featuring all the main guests. Tickets are sold separately and it usually sells out. For more information call 01449 771090 or visit: www.eatmt.org.uk

PUBLIC FOOTPATHS AND RIGHTS OF WAY With summer now firmly upon us, ample opportunities present themselves for a walk through the countryside, whether it be while on holiday or closer to home. This month I thought we would therefore look at various types of public rights of access over land. The most obvious is the public footpath, of which there are many in and around Stowmarket. It is also hopefully fairly self-evident what they may be used for – anything on foot. A bridleway, on the other hand, can also be used for cycling and horse riding. Finally, there are byways. There are two different types of byway – restricted and those open to all traffic. The latter means what it says – they can be used by any kind of transport, including cars, although in practice will mainly be used by walkers and for horse riding. A restricted byway, on the other hand, can only be used by transport that doesn’t have a motor. Rights of way are marked with signs or some coloured arrows. A yellow arrow will show a footpath and a blue arrow will show a

www.keepingintouchwith.com/stowmarket

bridleway. The routes are shown on the Ordnance Survey map and on some council websites. Perhaps less known is the right to roam. This does not apply to all land (so you cannot just walk over land wherever you want), but certain areas have been designated open access land or access land. Access land is usually mountain areas, moors, heaths and downs – which are privately owned, but have been formally designated as access land. Finally, and needless to say, private land can only be used for access where the landowner has given permission in some way.

STOWMARKET ARTISAN MARKET Next markets: Saturdays, September 3 and October 1, 10am-1.30pm at the Scout Centre, Milton Road North (just past the library).

The August market was a success with 11 stalls and an increased footfall. Our jewellery, cakes and knitted novelties did particularly well and we welcomed three new stall holders. So why not pop in and have a cup of tea/coffee and cake for £1 and check out our range of crafts and gifts?

What a wonderful day we had at Helmingham Hall Dog Show on July 31. The location was stunning, as was the weather and the event was very well attended by lots of canine friends, and humans too! It was particularly good to see people, including children, come out of the tea tent to dance to The Floral Dance which was our final tune. Mid Suffolk Brass have been really busy this year with many more events to come. See our Facebook page or our website if you would like to book us for your event. We are also recruiting young and old alike. If you have played a brass instrument before or would like to play, you are welcome at any of our practice nights which are held on Monday evenings at 7.45pm at St Peters Church Hall, Stowmarket or call our musical director, Mel Stammers: 01449 774651

BE FO RE

THE BIG REVEAL AT COMB

In January 2016 Combs Ford Primary School decided to undertake a project to transform an old twin mobile classroom unit into a modern, fully equipped, facility for Wraparound Care and Nursery after recognising the growing need for working parents to have somewhere safe for their children to be looked after both before school and at the end of the school day. Funding was provided by a National Lottery grant, a town council grant from Councillors Nick Gowrley and Gerard Brewster, May Ball and Auction, other fundraising events and a children’s sponsored circuits led by Julie Zarkos and the team at NRG Gym.

MILL CARPETS AND FLOORING

Many local businesses pledged to help, providing either materials at low or no cost, as well as offers of free labour to carry out the transformation. So under the supervision of our volunteer local builder Doug Mead the work began. The plans were quite grand:

All new insulation and a modern heating and hot water system

Redecoration throughout

Replacing all doors and windows with new double glazed units

New flooring

Updating the toilet facilities to include disabled access

A new entrance to allow fully independent disabled access

Complete electrical re-wire

Up-dated sink and kitchen units to each area

The list was endless and seemed to grow each week. Chris and Wayne at Jewson’s offered to help, supplying materials needed at each stage of the project. I really didn’t know how many different types of screws, nails and plugs there were, but their staff guided us through ensuring the right equipment was always ready. Ben at Clarke Fencing provided a shed for equipment, with the concrete base supplied by Matthew at Eastern Concrete, all at a greatly reduced rate. Glen and the team at Stowmarket Skips always ensured we had skips on hand to take away the old materials and the accumulated rubbish. The first task to be undertaken was to ensure the roof was watertight. Gary Norman Flat Roofing came to our aid and fixed the flat roof. Neil Stallard at Shore Engineering agreed to undertake building control to ensure all work was up to specification and would be a safe and secure environment. 32322 Juice Panel 50x44.5mm.indd 1

Mark Hisscott from Plastic Trade Frames then fitted a new disabled access front door. 97808 TP Stowmarket Press Advert TPLMT01.indd 21/07/2016 1 With the outside complete the internal improvements were started. Doug, Kevin Paris, Graham Peck and Aaron Miles formed a new office, toilet cubicles and a kitchen area for Alice and Victoria from Buttercups Nursery and Russell and Steve from Starling and Lock rewired and fitted the new electrics. Carl from Light by Design sourced new radiators and lighting for Russell and Steve to fit. Dave Knights at Travis Perkins offered their services, providing the toilets, basins and other plumbing equipment for the toilets and kitchen. Daniel at Pilot Plumbing and Lenny Sandford fitted these along with new pipework, then a new water heater was fitted, and plasterer Steve Landymore ensured all walls were plastered and ready to paint. Volunteers Mandy, Kat, Michelle, Craig, Vic, Alice, Sue, Rusco, Roger, Sam and many others spent many evenings and weekends clearing the site, loading skips and painting the inside of the mobile units, John Graham at Norbert Dentressangle provided three painters for a day. They did a great job with Charlene from Petticoat Décor lending the professional touch to the toilets and hallway. The flooring was then ready to be laid and Steve Cole from Mill Carpets supplied and fitted carpet and vinyl at a greatly reduced cost. The result is amazing. This has been a great community effort. A great deal of work has been accomplished on site – it’s a building to be proud of. A huge thank you goes out to all that have helped with the project in any way, but special thanks to Doug Mead from D S Mead Ltd, headteacher Russell Clark and Craig Tanner who have worked tirelessly each weekend and many evenings for the last three months. Without them this project would not have happened. Thank you guys. On August 4 we held the opening of the new building, inviting those who had helped with our build in any way. Councillor Nick Gowrley cut the ribbon to formally open the building. Everyone agreed it looks like a new building has been put on-site, the transformation is amazing! Buttercups Nursery will be moving from their current premises to the school site in August 2016, with the new nursery provision and Combs Clubhouse, before and after school and holiday care up and running from September 1. STOwMARKET & DISTRICT MONDAY CLUB Weekly activities continued throughout the summer. Members thoroughly enjoyed The Muleskinners visit for an evening of country & western music. This was followed by a Beetle Drive with good natured rivalry amongst the teams. We then had a visit from Mid-Suffolk Brass who provided some rousing music. The members also had the chance to try their hand at conducting the band – thoroughly enjoyed by all. The slight drizzle did not dampen enthusiasm for the BBQ organised by Janet and her husband. Everybody went home feeling very full after sampling the various options on offer. Many thanks to Janet, Nigel and friends for a very successful evening. We also had a very enjoyable evening when Times Past made a return visit. Their music was very much enjoyed and, despite the warm evening, the dancing went on non-stop. On September 5 we will enjoy dancing to music provided by Yesterday, a very popular group with our members and a good start to our autumn meetings. We are a club for adults with learning difficulties and meet each Monday from 7.30-9.30pm at the Community Hub in Crown Street. We are run entirely by volunteers and new members and helpers are always very welcome. If you would like further information, please contact us on 01449 672123 or just come along on a Monday evening.

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB Almost everyone enjoys taking photographs these days. However, if you want to develop your skills and take more satisfying photographs, joining a camera club is an excellent step. Stowmarket & District Camera Club is a small, active and long established club for those interested in photography. We have a membership of around 30 people with a wide range of abilities, ages, backgrounds and photographic interests and we would like to increase that membership You don’t have to be an ‘expert photographer’ to be welcomed as a member of the club. All you need is an interest in photography. Our aim is to encourage you to develop your interest and skills, as well as to provide a place to meet a range of friendly people who share your interest. New members are always very welcome to the club. All you need is a camera – any camera – and a real interest in using it. Our members use DSLRs, compacts and bridge cameras. We have an exciting new programme for 2016/17 which includes competitions judged by experienced visiting judges as well as highly regarded visiting speakers who give talks on specific aspects of photography, often with ‘how to’ advice. We also have practical evenings, photo shoots and social events. Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside, Stowmarket IP14 2BD, usually on the second and fourth Mondays of the month between September and June. We start arriving at around 7pm for a 7.30pm start. The next season starts on Monday, September 12 and we’d love to see you there. For more information visit: www.stowmarketanddistrictcameraclub.onesuffolk.net

STOWMARKET SUGARCRAFT CLUB Our July meeting was very well attended with many members and some visitors coming to see Linda Garnham demonstrating how to make a tea pot out of sponge. A superb evening, Linda is a regular visitor to us and this demonstration confirmed why she is so popular. So many tips and good advice, she made it all look so easy! Very misleading as anyone who has iced a spherical cake will tell you, but as always Linda’s advice along with her experience made for a very informative evening. I’m sure she will be returning soon. In September Liz Ungless will show us how to make baubles with sugarpaste, which may give a clue to what we will be decorating our Christmas tree with this year. Liz’s demonstrations are always full of hints and tips to make our work easier.

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF STOWMARKET Although members of Inner Wheel Club of Stowmarket don’t meet officially during July and August two events were organised for members to meet up. In July, 20 ladies lunched at Mr Allards before visiting Columbine Hall in Stowupland under the Invitation to View scheme. We were shown round this beautiful moated hall by the owners who regaled us with numerous historical facts and fascinating tales about the eclectic collection of items brought back from all over the world. All agreed it was a thoroughly enjoyable visit and the owners were thanked for their hospitality. At the beginning of August members enjoyed a three mile walk through the nature reserve and around the lakes at Needham Market, refreshing themselves afterwards with a meal at the Lion Pub in Needham Market. We look forward to meeting in September, when our speaker will talk about dogs for the disabled.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMEN’S SECTION Twenty-six members attended the branch meeting in July despite a thunderstorm and heavy rain. Our speaker was Jenny Gibbs and she and her partner Mustafa presented a talk entitled Hatched, Matched and Dispatched about life in the Turkish village where they live for half the year. Weddings in Turkey always take place in the summer and are always held outside, starting on Tuesday and ending on Sunday. At least 1,000 people usually attend. The weddings are non-religious and the bride and groom have separate events. Jenny has lived in Turkey for 23 years after falling in love with the country, and with Mustafa, while on holiday. We were told lots of fascinating facts and can’t wait for Jenny to come back again. After the talk we had an opportunity to purchase Jenny’s book and pashminas, shawls, table linen and jewellery with a percentage of takings going to our funds. Shirley Cobbold expressed thanks to Jenny and Mustafa. We are holding a jumble sale at the community centre on Saturday, October 8 so please save all the usual items for us to sell. The Battle of Britain Service is in the parish church at 11am on Sunday, September 18. Our Standard will be in attendance. The competition for the evening of a pretty bracelet was won by Janet Beaumont with Grace second and Carol third. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, September 21 for our Harvest Festival. The competition if for something containing apples. Maureen Stammers

Lots to interest anyone who enjoys sugarcraft, so if you would like to come along to see any of these demonstrations please join us. Meetings are always on the second Monday in St Mary’s Hall, Wolsey Road, Stowmarket. Doors open at 7.30pm.

OUT & ABOUT SUFFOLK REGIMENT OLD COMRADES ASSOCIATION

BACTON & COTTON LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

For our July meeting we held a BBQ at the Meadlands Sports and Social Club where 27 members and guests from Felixstowe enjoyed a very good evening. A big thank you to those who did the cooking as the regular chief was on holiday.

Tuesday, September 20, 7.30pm, Bacton Village Hall: John Winthrop, Suffolk Gentleman who founded Boston.

Minden Day was held at the barracks in Bury St Edmonds on July 31. Our Standard and some of our members attended, but there were fewer members of the Suffolk Regiment in attendance as we are all getting older. It would be great to see some of those who don’t normally turn up for a good day out and perhaps an opportunity to meet old comrades you haven’t seen for years. I personally look forward to meeting one who I joined up with 58 years ago who is driving up from Devon on August 4. We had our annual outing to the end of pier show at Cromer. Everyone enjoyed the day out with breezy and sunny weather and a great show. A big thanks to Marilyn for organising the trip. Our September meeting will be held in the RBL Club in Tavern Street. If you were in any of the local regiments you would be very welcome to come along. For more information contact D King: 01449 675318

STOWUPLAND LOCAL HISTORY GROUP Wednesday, September 7: The Incendiary Fires of 1844 in Stowupland by Neil Langridge The agricultural labourer’s life during the 19th century could be far from a rural idyll. Issues such as food shortages, unemployment and the new Union Workhouses were a cause for protest. This could take the form of fire-starting and an outbreak in 1844 was focused on the Stowmarket area. Three of these fires occurred on farms in Stowupland and much damage was done. One of the labourers responsible was transported to Australia. Wednesday, October 5: Behind the Scenes at Time Team by Helen Geake For 20 years Channel 4’s Time Team was essential viewing. For four of these years Helen was a key member of the team. No doubt she will tell us something of how the series was made with a few amusing stories of life behind the scenes. Helen qualified at York University and currently works for the Portable Antiquities Scheme. We meet at 7.30pm in Stowupland Village Hall IP14 4BQ where there is ample parking space. Visitors are always welcome and refreshments are available. Admission is £1 for members, £3 for non-members. For more information, please contact Judy Clarke: 01449 615386

The Pilgrim Fathers founded a new American colony in 1620. In 1630 an expedition led by John Winthrop of Groton, near Boxford in Suffolk founded Boston, Massachusetts of which state he became the first governor. Dr Nick Sign tells us his less well-known but exciting story. Member £2, non-members £3.

ROYAL NAVAL ASSOCIATION, STOWMARKET BRANCH Three members of Stowmarket’s Royal Naval Association have successfully enrolled in the Sea Cadet Corps as volunteer staff instructors, bringing their knowledge and experience of serving in the senior service to a younger generation. Sean Andrews (right) and Pete Chivers (left) now hold the rate of Acting Petty Officer (SCC), with Steve Searle (centre) being an Acting Sergeant RM (SCC). Sean served in the ‘silent service’ aboard various submarines during his time in the Royal Navy, while Pete served on destroyers. Steve’s time in the Royal Marines saw him see service in Northern Ireland and Norway. Between them they completed 30 years of service and see their time with the Sea Cadets as a way of not only sharing their knowledge and experience, but also to help provide instruction to the girls and boys of the Sea Cadet unit in Newmarket, TS Intrepid, with Sea Cadets going to sea, learning to sail and doing adventure training, all on a naval theme. The Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) is a national youth organisation sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Navy. It is the UK’s largest Naval Cadet Force with more than 19,500 Cadets and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers. Cadets follow similar rates and ranks, traditions, values and ethos as their parent service, the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines. While the SCC is not a pre-service organisation, a significant number of former Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets do go on to join the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and other branches of the British Armed Forces. Stowmarket RNA meets at 7.30pm every fourth Tuesday of the month at the Royal British Legion Club, 8 Tavern Street, Stowmarket IP14 1PH.

OUT & ABOUT /SCHOOLS HERITAGE OPEN DAY EVENT AT ORCHARD BARN

STOWMARKET HIGH SCHOOL

The Heritage Open Days event is being held during the second weekend of September this year, your chance to “explore local treasures of every age, style and function”. As part of that celebration Orchard Barn is opening its doors to visitors on Saturday, September 10, 2-4.30pm

Stowmarket High School hosted its third heart screening session at the school’s vocational learning centre in July through the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The money raised by the Lily Webster Memorial Fund gave us the opportunity to screen another 210 14 – 35 year olds from across the Stowmarket area.

During the afternoon there will be demonstrations of traditional building methods including wattle and daub, clay lump block and shingle making. At 2.30pm there will be a talk covering the history of the site, progress to date and our plans for the future. The recent successful crowd-funding campaign will no doubt get a mention! At 3.15pm a tour of the one-and-a-half acre site will begin, taking in the green woodworking area, the earth working area, the orchard, the vegetable plot with its Hugelkultur beds, the pond and, of course, the restored 17th century barn. There will also be refreshments and a raffle. If you’ve read about Orchard Barn before and wondered what goes on there, now is your chance to find out. Our address is Orchard Barn, Bildeston Road, Ringshall (south of Mill Road, Battisford) IP14 2LY. For more details visit: www.orchardbarn.org.uk

PLANT HERITAGE SUFFOLK GROUP Marina Christopher presents a talk entitled Attracting Beneficial Wildlife to your Garden at Stowupland Village Hall IP14 4BQ on Saturday, September 24 at 2.30pm. Plant stalls will include rare and unusual plants and delicious refreshments will be available for purchase Admission: free to members, £5 entrance fee for non-members. STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB The September meeting will be on Wednesday, September 28 at Woolpit Village Hall at 7.30pm when Helen Bird of Marks Tey will present a demonstration entitled This is my Way. Visitors and new members always welcome.

URC PRE-SCHOOL This half term the children will be settling back in and making friends with our new children. We will be celebrating harvest and using all our senses to explore different fruit and vegetables. We will also be taking advantage of our outdoor area as well as exploring our local environment on our walks. The children love to go out on walks around the town and are enthusiastic when retelling their journey once back at pre-school and sharing with their parents in pictures and in talk. URC Pre-School is situated in the main hall of The United Reformed Church, Ipswich Street, Stowmarket IP14 1AD. We are currently open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am-1pm and on Tuesday from 9am-3.30pm in term time, but are planning to open extra afternoons from October. We accept children from the age of two and can provide funded sessions for two, three and four year olds. CARDIAC SCREENING IN THE YOUNG

Lily Webster, a student at Stowmarket High School, died suddenly from a rare heart condition in January 2012. Since then, Lily’s mum Melanie and her family and friends have raised money so that young people in and around Stowmarket have had the opportunity to be screened. This screening can identify early signs of potentially fatal conditions that would otherwise go undetected. This year’s screening identified six more young people with potentially abnormal heart rhythms who have now been referred for further testing. The consultant cardiologist and the physicians have now screened more than 600 young people locally and are hoping to be able to carry out another screening session next year with the continued support of Melanie and the Lily Webster Memorial Fund. Heart screening not only helps to identify young people who may be at risk, but provides invaluable data to enable Professor Sharma and his team the ability to understand why Sudden Adult Death occurs. For further information regarding heart screening please visit: www.c-r-y.org.uk STOWMARKET HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL TALENT Stowmarket High School launched a five track EP, The Stow SHOW, at The Mix in July. Recorded live at the John Peel Centre, the EP was mixed and produced at Vorpal Studio, part of The Mix, the charity supporting young people in the area. Driven by the enthusiasm of Glen Parker, inclusion officer at Stowmarket High School and a regular on Suffolk’s music scene, the project was conceived to help young musicians see what it is like to perform, record, package and produce a CD of their music. On hand at the launch was Sam Robson of IEM who brings the music industry into schools across the region, explaining what it takes to work in the business. Also present were members of local rock band Renegade Twelve who themselves are playing bigger stages this festival season, along with Matthew Abercrombie, director of the John Peel Centre, Tony Bell from Grapevine Magazine and Neil Sergeant and Ryan Currell from The Mix. The EP opens with Renegade Twelve and is followed by Year 12 student George Howarth. Former student Joe Grey performs a rap. Band Zero Gravity, Year 9 students Kiyra Robinson, Lewis Halls and Byron Buckle, perform a slow ballad, and the album finishes with Close to the Shore comprising Year 10 student Patrick Kolasa and Josh Aldous from Year 11. The talented students also produced all of the artwork for the EP’s cover. Headteacher Dave Lee-Allan said: “The purpose of the EP is to showcase the musical talent of those involved – the music industry is not a kind or easy one to work in but without initiatives such as this it would be much more difficult for young people to get their music heard. Thanks to The John Peel Centre and The Mix for helping make this happen.” Ipswich musician Connor Ryan Adams was also on hand and treated the audience to two unplugged tracks, Open my Eyes and Locked Doors, along with members of Renegade Twelve and their manager Carly Chenery.

SCHOOLS / SPORT ELMSWELL BABY AND TODDLER GROUP

SCORPION MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY

On Monday, August 1, the children were thrilled to receive a wonderful selection of toys from Tesco, a committee member having responded to their invitation to help community groups in the local area.

A great turnout of junior karate and kickboxing students recently took part in their very own mini-Olympic Games to coincide with Rio 2016. All of the juniors had the chance to compete in long jump, sprint races, tae kwon do sparring, wrestling, fencing, archery and shooting (with Nerf guns).

For over a year, the group committee have been focussed on securing their precious venue, Wesley Hall in Elmswell, as it was put up for sale by the Methodist Circuit. Recently they received news that Elmswell Parish Council and Methodist Circuit have agreed an acceptable price for the entire site, meaning it will stay in community hands. With a sigh of relief, the committee could at last turn their attention to enriching the selection of toys and equipment available. Charlotte, spotting a sign while on her weekly shop, contacted Rachel at Tesco, who offered to help by donating brand new toys. So after snack time on August 1, the children returned to the hall to discover a load of new toys to enjoy, including tunnels, bouncy hoppers, a sand and water table, shiny new cars and buckets and spades. There were giggles, gasps, lots of excited playing and, inevitably, a few tears as the children explored their new play materials. In the future, Tesco have offered the time of their staff to help with practical jobs and special events, so the hope is that this relationship will flourish. Elmswell Baby and Toddler Group meets throughout the year, including school holidays, from 10-11.30am at Wesley Hall.

STOWMARKERS NETBALL CLUB As all of my juniors return to school the club is happy to be holding its fourth annual awards ceremony this month. The awards ceremony is a way of celebrating the club’s success by giving away various awards to these young, talented players and what is particularly nice is that every player goes away with something. Each player is recognised for their commitment to Stowmarkers as without them there would be no club. Also this month the club is entering a team into the South Suffolk Netball League for the first time so the girls are really looking forward to this. With a new umpire on-board over the summer period the girls have been busy with their preparation. The club holds two sessions – one from 7-8pm every Wednesday for advancing players and every other Saturday from 9-10am for younger players. We do allow boys to play in the club although they can only play in High 5 matches. We always welcome new players and there is a strict codes of conduct policy in place which is why many juniors choose to come to us as we are all so friendly. If your child wants to get more active, get in touch with us via our Facebook page – Stowmarkers Netball Club – or contact Louise, our head coach: 07428 595354

Certificates were awarded at the end of the event to a very excited group of juniors. A big thank you to Stowmarket Fencing Club for the kind use of their fencing equipment. The academy still has plenty more events coming up before the end of the year including a seminar with 10th dan blackbelt Grandmaster Brian Dossett, the Golden Mile charity run, a half triathlon, sparring tournaments, gradings and social events. Quite a few of our senior members are competing in the 22 press up challenge to highlight the awful fact that worldwide 22 people who are ex-forces take their own lives every day. Twnety-two press ups for 22 days. Well done to all those nominated. We have a fantastic group of instructors helping to teach and pass on knowledge and as always a big thank you to instructor Mel Walmsley, Master Hannah Povah, coaches Josh Trent, Dave Fell and Steve Gill, instructor Mike Oglesby and Senior Master Andy Lewis. Currently in its 26th year, the Scorpion Academy is pleased to offer superb tuition in mma, muay thai, universal karate, tae kwon do, kickboxing, self defence and fitness training with one month free to all new members. For further information please call Mark JR Trent, 8th dan blackbelt: 07708 644162 / scorpion academy@live.co.uk www.ufkka.org.uk www.scorpionacademy.co.uk

STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB It’s all about matches, matches and more matches at the moment. The summer teams have completed all of their fixtures and are waiting anxiously to see whether promotion has been achieved. The internal club tournament is in full swing with dozens of junior and senior players playing their knock-out games to progress to the grand finals day on Sunday, September 11. Good luck to everyone involved and particular good fortune to those of you playing for the first time. We’ve seen some events attracting a much greater entry than before with many of our new members taking the plunge. Let’s hope to see some new names engraved onto the trophies this year as well. At the time of writing Andy Murray has won his first singles match in the Olympic games but lost in the doubles. An even greater shock was to see Novak Djokovic beaten by Del Potro. Novak was memorably dumped out of Wimbledon by Sam Querry and his clear exhaustion seems to be still present. Maybe he needs a little more time to recover from an incredibly gruelling schedule? Talking of gruelling schedules, the main coaching programme is on a break until the week beginning September 5. We’re filling the time with summer camps, which are full and almost completed, so if you didn’t manage to get a place this time look out for the flyers in school for the next one. Club mornings and evenings are continuing as normal and are as busy and popular as ever. It’s a great way to practise what’s being taught during lessons plus a good way to meet other members and to expand your playing circle. If you’re a member but haven’t tried the club sessions come on down and see what you’ve been missing. If you’d like any more information about coaching then get in touch. See you on court! STOWMARKET GOSPEL HALL

This month we are looking for a home for Echo, a very pretty tabby girl aged about two years. She will need some grooming to keep her coat looking good and can be a little shy at first. Once she knows you she loves lots of fuss and attention and can purr for England. She has been an indoor cat, but we are hoping to find a safe and quiet home where she can enjoy going outside. She will probably be best suited to be an only cat and with an older family or family with children over 10 years old. Echo is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

This may be the first time that the Gospel Hall has featured in In Touch, but Christians have been meeting and worshiping there for over 100 years. We still continue to meet and to share the message of the Bible

If you would like to know more about Echo or any of the cats in our care please ring Marina on 01449 674584. For more information visit www.cats.org.uk/bury-st-edmunds or our Facebook page. If your cat hasn’t been neutered and your circumstances mean that you need financial help towards the cost, please call Margaret on 01284 851055 and leave a message. Your call will be returned as soon as possible. Forthcoming events September 10: Autumn Fayre in Woolpit Village Hall, 2-4pm. Admission by donation of one tin of quality cat food or 50p. Cakes, stalls, tombola, refreshments and classic cars. October 15: Jumble Sale at Stowmarket Community Centre, 2-4pm November 12: Christmas Fayre at Needham Market Community Centre, 2-4pm Refreshments will be available at all events so please do come along and support us. You will be made very welcome.

September is an important time for us as the children go back to school and our activities start again. We have our Family Fun Time on Saturday, September 10 at Chilton Primary School. It starts at 2.30pm and we have games to play – with prizes for the best teams. Nick Lincoln will have a short talk for the children and then we all join in the free BBQ. Friday Club for all in Year 5 and above is held from 6.45-8pm each Friday during term time and starts on Friday, September 9. We also have Trailblazers for children aged five to 12 every second Saturday of the month starting on October 8. Of course, we also have our regular Sunday services at 6.30pm, except for the second Sunday when we have a Family Service at 4pm. We’d love to welcome you or your children to any of these activities and you can find out more at www.stowmarketgospelhall.org.uk

CHURCH NEWS TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF HAUGHLEY’S COVENANT OF WELCOME

for the occasion. There will also be an opportunity to re-affirm our commitment to the Covenant of Welcome. Afternoon tea will be served after the service.

This coming September will see the tenth anniversary of the closure of the United Reformed Church Chapel at Haughley, allowing the congregation to move in with the good folk of the parish church as a joint congregation through a Covenant of Welcome. Throughout the ten years there has been a good working relationship between the URC and Anglican members with regular meetings being held to share common concerns. The chapel folk are full members of St Mary’s, but also maintain their links with the United Reformed Church, with their membership kept within the Stowmarket Group of URC churches (Stowmarket, Mendlesham and Stowupland) and the URC continues to be responsible for the leading of one service each month. It’s an arrangement that works well with all clearly benefiting from this union. To mark the occasion we are holding a celebratory afternoon at Haughley on Sunday, September 18. From 2pm the current owners of the Old Chapel will welcome visitors to have a look at the excellent conversion work, and at the same time examine some of the artefacts and features that have been preserved. From 2.30pm the parish church will be open with drinks available and with various activities to suit all ages, including children’s crafts, a treasure hunt (with the challenge of identifying local sights from photos taken from obscure angles) and a quiz. At 3.40pm there will be a film show, with footage from the later years of the chapel, and at 4pm a short Songs of Praise service, including the dedication of a banner made by Mrs Janet Herrod of Stowmarket URC commissioned

The moderator of the Easter Synod has agreed to be present, along with Ecumenical officers from the Anglican Church as well as the URC. Everyone is welcome, especially any who have had links with Haughley Chapel or Church over the years. So, please save the date and come along.
