NEWS CLEAN FOR THE QUEEN COMMUNITY LITTER PICK Clean for the Queen was a nationwide campaign to get the country looking its best ahead of the Queen’s 90th birthday. National campaign organisers commented:

“When the Queen came to the throne litter was not the problem that it is today. Food packaging, plastic bottles, takeaway meals and cigarette butts have all contributed to a growing menace that affects our wildlife, streets, countryside and sense of pride. What better way could we show our gratitude to Her Majesty than to clean up our country?” The Clean for the Queen community litter pick held on Wednesday, May 18 was a great success in Stowmarket. Council staff, councillors and volunteers grabbed their litter-pickers, donned branded high-vis jackets and took to the local streets, green spaces and grot spots, and got stuck into tidying up the town.

The council and partners, which included Tesco and Mid Suffolk District Council, took to areas in and around the town centre aiming to target spots in need of a royal clean up. Approximately 25 bags of litter were collected which consisted of copious amounts of cigarette butts, food wrappers and fly tipped waste. A chain saw was also recovered and vegetation and weeds were removed from shop fronts. Event organiser Councillor Lesley Mayes, said: “The Clean for the Queen event was a great success in Stowmarket with staff, partners and volunteers getting involved to give the area a spring clean. Our team does a great job keeping the town tidy, but a targeted effort with extra help gives us a further boost to make the places where we live more beautiful.” In light of the success of the event Stowmarket Town Council are planning on holding regular litter picks throughout the year, details of which will be posted at: www.stowmarket.org If you would like to be added to our mailing list please contact Community Liaison Officer Stephanie Edmans: 01449 612060 / stephaniee@stowmarket.org

NEWS NSPCC BIG BOARD GAME DAY At the end of May the NSPCC ran a national fundraising campaign built around gathering people together to play board games. As a keen boardgamer myself, I decided to join in and organise one locally. I knew a few other players and we have a few clubs in the area, so I figured there should be enough interest. The Royal British Legion kindly allowed us to use their function room as the venue, which was the perfect setting, with plenty of tables, chairs, and of course a licence bar to keep everyone refreshed.

NEW PRIMARY SCHOOL OFFICIALLY OPENED The children from Trinity CEVAP School welcomed Bishop Martin Seeley on Tuesday, May 10 as he officially opened the school. The celebrations mark the completion of extensive building works. The school is located on the site of the former Combs Middle School and has been refurbished to be fit for primary aged children. The school is now in its second full year with 40 children aged four, five and six attending. It will grow over time to have 315 pupils. Trinity School is the first new church school to open in the diocese in over 40 years. Bishop Martin said: “Our church schools need to be inclusive and there is something that the church can offer the whole community.” Headteacher Linda Curran-Spain said she has a clear long term vision for the school and is: “determined to make a difference in every child’s life.”

Attendees kindly brought along their own games for people to play, enabling people to try out games they’d never played, while others could share the games they love. On the day there were nearly 60 different games available. It was incredibly trusting as many of these games were rare, very expensive or simply precious to the owners. Thanks to some very generous people and companies, we also had some lovely raffle prizes, which contributed a great deal to the total raised on the day. There was even a trophy donated for player of the day, which went to a kind man from Ipswich who volunteered his entire day running games for younger attendees. I’m sure he will have inspired a whole new generation of gamers. In the end, we had players from as far as Norwich and Colchester. We’d like to think they will keep in touch and have gained some new friends to play with in the future. Also, thanks to the generosity of those attending and emptying their pockets, the British Legion for the splendid venue, and sponsors for the prizes, we managed to raise more than £360 for the NSPCC. As one of the prize sponsors said: “It’s powerful how board games bring people together and inspire happiness.” Sion Oxford

SCC CONNECTING COMMUNITIES DEMAND RESPONSIVE TRANSPORT Suffolk County Council is revising its Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) provision for residents making journeys where scheduled bus and local train services do not exist. Commencing Monday, June 13 the present 17 rural Suffolk Links DRT areas will be replaced by a scheme based on the seven district council areas of Suffolk. The organisation providing the service in Mid Suffolk is BSEVG and generally they will use nine seat vehicles. Where possible their aim will be to supplement fixed bus routes and local trains and thus some requests for non-disabled people transport will be based on a scheduled bus connection (e.g. a journey from Claydon to Creeting St Mary may be based on a pick up in Needham Market connecting out of and back into a service 88/89 bus journey). It’s not known how a request from, say, Barham to Coddenham would be treated where both places are on scheduled bus services although very indirect by a connection in Ipswich or Debenham. The decision will be made by the service co-ordinator. Concessionary passes will not be valid for use on these services, but pass holders will be able to surrender their pass in exchange for an annual issue of vouchers worth £100. Adult fares for single journeys (no return fares) start at £2 for journeys up to five miles, scaling up to £4 for a journey between 15 and 20 miles. The service will be provided from 07:00 until 19:00 Mondays to Saturdays. Bookings can be made up to one week in advance by phoning 01449 614271 for Mid Suffolk residents. At the presentation at Needham Market MSDC offices on June 8, County Councillor James Finch, SCC Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, assured the meeting that the new service would be closely monitored and adjustments would be made in the light of experience. He also emphasised that the service is available to all people regardless of age. Barry Moore, Transport Representative, Claydon Parish Council

NEWS STOWMARKET WARDS The Queen’s 90th Birthday Right across the county and in many other places, people celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday. Stowmarket was no exception, with a garden party in the grounds of the town council where the mayor, Councillor Barry Humphreys, MBE planted an oak tree with the observation that it would outlast us all. Our local MP, Jo Churchill, was on hand to cut the birthday cakes. There was also a very well thought exhibition in St Peter’s Church which featured many different displays chronicling Stowmarket’s association with royal events and celebrating her majesty’s reign in very original ways. Town Centre Improvement Initiative Stowmarket Town Council is looking to work positively with partner organisations and stakeholders to deliver the following priorities: • Branding and creating a coherent identity to the town • Enhancing the street scene • Improving visitor orientation and communications • Supporting community safety • Promoting the town market • Creating an accessible town centre • Developing the arts, entertainment and heritage offer • Regenerating the town centre

First off will be efforts to enhance the street scene in the town centre by repainting the bollards, bins and benches and removing the ‘Tardis’ noticeboard at the top end of Ipswich Street. These first steps will help create a more attractive town centre. If you have any feedback on the above or suggestions for improvements that you feel could improve the town centre we would love to discuss them with you. Please get in touch with your ideas at info@stowmarket.org or write to the Town Clerk, Stowmarket Town Council, Milton House, Milton Road South, Stowmarket IP14 1EZ. Building a Sustainable Future for Mid Suffolk Wherever way you look in Stowmarket there are new homes being built. Nevertheless, as nationally, Mid Suffolk continues to face a housing shortage. With our population expected to grow by 20% in the next 20 years, this means we will need at least 20,000 more homes by 2036. Mid Suffolk District Council (MSDC) believes that housing-led growth is an important driver of future prosperity for the area: www.midsuffolk.gov. uk/ourfuture To that end the council has organised a series of events through June and July in towns and villages across the area to explain why housing-led growth is so important to our area. You can find out where these events are at: www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/OurFuture/Events There is also an online survey where you can provide feedback on what the council is doing about stimulating a sustainable future for the district for us all. PPG CHARITY NIGHT RAISES £1,206 PPG Stowmarket would like to thank everyone who helped raise a staggering £1,205.06 at a recent Elvis Night held at the Limes Hotel in Needham Market. Special thanks to Stephen Boyce and Sue Rudland (who work in the PPG Colour Matching Laboratory) who helped to organise the evening as part of a team-building event and also to The Limes Hotel, who were wonderful hosts. We would also like to thank all of the individuals and local businesses who kindly donated many of the draw prizes. Last, but by no means least, our gratitude must go to the star of the night himself, Elvis – what a brilliant performance! PPG Stowmarket is committed to supporting the community in which it operates and this was a great example of how staff, businesses and charities can work together to raise both a wareness and funds for local causes. This event supported AJ’s Legacy and Fresh Start New Beginnings.

AJ’s Legacy is a charity formed to help young people in Suffolk in memory of Aiden Jones. Their aim is to help young people in need in Stowmarket and the surrounding area. Since AJ’s Legacy was set up in 2011 they have been able to help a number of families as well as many local organisations. For more information please visit: www.ajslegacy.co.uk Fresh Start New Beginnings works through Suffolk and Norfolk and was set up to provide a therapeutic service for children and young people up to 18 years who have reported being sexually abused and to offer support for their families. The aim is to help children and young people make sense of the confusion they feel and to teach them coping strategies to deal with the difficulties they face. They highlight their strengths and potential so that they are able to move from victim to survivor. For more information please visit: www.fs-newbeginnings.org.uk

NEWS / OUT & ABOUT CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE

REPORT FROM KEITH WELHAM

As the 2016 group arrival is imminent we would like to say a very big thank you to all of our supporters who have helped make this year’s visit possible.

District Councillor for Stowupland and Creeting St Peter

Many people have dropped donations into our charity shop but haven’t left their contact details so I haven’t been able to thank them personally. If you prefer to remain anonymous then of course we respect this, but I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge how grateful we are for your contributions. Without all the clothing, shoes, toys and medicines donated by the local community we would find ourselves in the position of so many other Links that have had to cut the number of children in the group due to insufficient funding. We do try to give as much support as possible to the children, their families at home and also the host families who take the children into their homes for the whole month. Yes, the main purpose of the children’s visit is for health recuperation, but how brilliant is it that we can also give them memories to take home that will last a lifetime! It is very, very unlikely that any of the children who come in the group will ever leave Belarus again, let alone come back to England. Occasionally a child is fortunate enough to receive an invitation for a private visit, but with the increasing cost of air fares and visas the number of these invitations falls each year. The day after the children arrive we hold a clothing party for them, a very important event as having arrived with only the clothes they are wearing the children will be able to choose clothing for themselves and any siblings at home. The children don’t mind that the clothing is second-hand. It’s amazing to see the look on their faces when they see all the clothes on display and know that they can choose whatever they want. As this is an ongoing program we are always happy to continue to receive donations of clothing for the children throughout the year. Any age is appreciated as we not only provide clzothing to the children when they visit, but also to their brothers and sisters at home, plus other children who, for various reasons, are unable to be included in the program. We currently support families in Belarus with children age from birth to 17 years of age. We are always grateful for your support and hope it may continue long into the future. Link Chair Elizabeth Parker

I was shocked that the inspector had approved the Gladman application and I know many other residents were too. Mid Suffolk members and officers were appalled at the decision and disappointed that so many new homes are to be built on such a prominent site in the village. I and others feel that SCC Highways let us down badly by seeking such a small financial contribution towards improvement works at the A1120/B1115 junction. The flows and delays at the junction were seriously under-estimated, but SCC didn’t appear to make any challenge to their accuracy. So we have to move on and hope that, once the land is sold, any potential house builder will have discussions with the parish council and district council to match the homes to be built more closely to housing need and to provide community benefits. There is still no date for the MSDC planning committee most likely to be in mid to late July. You can check on the council website for the date of the meeting or give me a ring. Lack of a five year supply of land for housing is still a problem, but possibly less so as a result of the Gladman decision and recent permissions at Cedars Park, Elmswell and elsewhere in the district. It will continue to be a problem for some time while land with permissions is held with no plans to actively pursue developing it. District officers have commenced a consultation on Building a Sustainable Future. Events are being held around the district to seek residents’ views. I have asked for one of these to be in Stowupland, especially in the light of one planning permission granted and two other applications pending. This consultation is part of the community engagement which should help shape the new Joint Local Plan. Senior management reorganisation is continuing. A deputy chief executive has been appointed (Lindsay Barker), but this is a new post that doesn’t appear in the current structure so changes will be needed. The Green Party have another district councillor, Anne Killett, having won the Barking ward by election from the Conservatives following the resignation of David Card. Membership of committees and working groups will have to be re-allocated and it is hoped that, with six members now, there will be a Green Party councillor on every committee and working group. UPDATE FROM THE BAND ROOM 2016 has already been a busy year for Stowmarket Chorale with two formal concerts already under our belt. The first in April was a St George’s Day celebration concert with the Jubilee Ladies Choir. Both the main and training bands played to a full audience with individual pieces as well as joint renditions and finished with a flag waving finale of Fantasia on British Sea Songs. This was a brilliant opportunity to showcase the two local groups to new audience members and also to experiment with some different pieces of music. Together we performed Hector the Hero, a lament featuring tin whistle, bagpipes and electric guitar as well as brass and voices. Our next full concert was at The Regal to celebrate their 80th birthday. The programme was a real celebration of some amazing film themes throughout the years, from the iconic Singin’ In The Rain to Let It Go from Frozen. Also performing at this concert, and previously at their own

8

engagement with the East Anglian Regional Handbell Ringers, was our trombone group Bones 4 You. With up to eight trombonists this group is sometimes more suitable for smaller spaces (although not too small – it can be a bit loud!). We head into the more relaxed events of the year now with a programme of lighter, bandstand music as we perform throughout the summer in the local area – hopefully with good weather to bring out the audiences. Our training band is working hard behind the scenes. Recently we have welcomed Jack on cornet and Sue on tenor horn, and Finlay earlier in the year on cornet. Congratulations to Oliver Hampton, Sam Forge and Sam Brett on their progress into the main band. The training band is open to both adults and children. If you are interested in joining, please contact us and we can advise on when are next taking beginners. For details visit: www.stowmarketchorale.org.uk

PERSONAL ADVICE, HEALTH & BEAUTY

TESTING TENDONS The run up to Wimbledon sets the mind running back to the classic condition of tennis elbow. For most people being diagnosed with ‘tennis elbow’ or elbow tendonitis seems a little strange as most of the time they have never played tennis in their life. Very few tennis professionals suffer with the condition. It’s more likely to be middle aged people and those who either use their arm repetitively or do an activity they are not used to doing. It used to be thought that the tendons of the muscles next to the elbow had become inflamed – hence the name tendinitis (itis means inflammation in medicine). While this was a great theory – much like the world being flat was a good theory until someone proved it otherwise – the condition is not one based on inflammation. Tennis elbow, or more scientifically known as lateral epicondyalgia, does mainly involve the tendon of a couple of muscles around the elbow, but the tendon has become slightly worn and degraded. The ‘fraying’ of the tendon is known as tendinopathy (tendon pain) and causes the bulk of the pain associated with the condition. The little nerve which runs very close to the tendon can also get irritated and this can also cause the pain to spread up and down the arm. Many people believe or have been told that there is not much which can be done for it and that they either need to wait a long time for

it to settle or that it won’t ever settle. This is far from the truth; yes it takes time for the tendon to return to a strong and healthy state but there are lots that can be thrown at the condition. Applying a heat pack is very useful to get blood to the area which brings in the good products to help you heal. Manual therapy to the elbow joint and muscles and taping to the arm can be fantastic at reducing the pain and helping you to function better. There are some very specific exercises which are designed to stimulate the tendon to heal, but they need to be explained very carefully to you so you will need to see us for them. Carrying on with activity as usual often results in worsening of the pain. For those who are tennis or other racquet sports players getting your grip width checked and having your racquet restrung with a multifilament string at a slightly lower tension to usual may be very beneficial. Gardening, decorating and DIY are prime causes of this condition and as tempting as it is to get it all done in one go, pacing yourself and doing the job over several weekends can help prevent the condition from starting and having many months of annoying elbow pain – which will stop you enjoying your Pimms while watching Murray (hopefully) marching on to the Wimbledon final again! As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE Starring Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders, Joan Collins and Rebel Wilson. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more. THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS This family animation is voiced by Kevin Hart, Lake Bell, Albert Brooks and Steve Coogan. Max’s life as a favourite pet is turned upside down, when his owner brings home a sloppy mongrel named Duke. They have to put their quarrels behind when they find out that an adorable white bunny named Snowball is building an army of abandoned pets determined to take revenge on all happy-owned pets and their owners. RUNNING A PRIVATE LIMITED COMPANY – SOME BASIC POINTS This month I am looking at some basic points in relation to running a private limited company, and in particular the responsibilities of the directors of the company and how payments can be made from the company to its directors and shareholders. Every private limited company must have at least one director (the requirement to have a company secretary has now been removed – this is now optional). A director of a limited company has various duties and responsibilities in relation to it. Some such responsibilities are matters of common sense anyway – such as to try and make the company a success and to follow the company’s rules, which are laid down in the company’s articles of association. Records must be kept and any changes to the company (such as its name or on appointment or retirement of a director) must be reported to Companies House and, where relevant, to HM Revenue and Customs. Corporation tax must be paid in relation to the company’s profits. Perhaps less obvious, through entirely logical, is the requirement

www.keepingintouchwith.com/stowmarket

to notify the shareholders if a director personally benefits from a transaction in which the company is involved. A director of a company can take money out the company in three ways. A director can be paid a salary, but the company will need to be registered at HM Revenue and Customs as an employer. A director – if he or she is also a shareholder – can be paid a dividend if the company has made sufficient profit. Where a dividend is paid, a director’s meeting must be held to declare the dividend and any appropriate minutes kept. If more money is paid out than has been put in, then this is called a director’s loan, and not a salary or dividend.

In January, some of the cadets were lucky enough to take part in the first adventure camp of the year in Llanbder, Wales where they enjoyed rock climbing, mountain biking and kayaking, as well as a host of other activities. February saw the cadets commemorate their 75th anniversary with a parade through Abbey Gardens, Bury St Edmunds. Squadrons across the country gathered in various locations to mark this special occasion. 1331 pledged to raise £7,500 throughout 2016 to buy new equipment for the squadron. In March a fundraising quiz night was held at the Royal British Legion and friends, family and squadron members attended for a fun packed evening! The event raised £240.63 towards the £7,500 target. On April 22, cadets from around Norfolk and Suffolk gathered at Wretham Camp in Norfolk for the annual Wing Field event. Out of a possible 290 points, 1331 not only scored 250, but came in first place, an amazing victory for them. Wing Field involves a range of activities including a minibus pull, raft building and fieldcraft. This is the first time in Wing Field history that the 1331 Squadron has won and they were absolutely over the moon. Less than a week later, the squadron welcomed friends, family and past members to a presentation evening to celebrate the achievements of the cadets throughout 2015. This event gives the cadets an opportunity to deliver a presentation on various camps or activities they have taken part in and gives guests a better insight as to what their cadet has been up to. An award ceremony followed; categories included Smartest Dressed Cadet, Most Promising Cadet and Outstanding Leadership Award. The Best Cadet Award (The Poppy Shield) was awarded to Sgt Daniel Woodward.

Would you still like to join Upbeat Contemporary Choir Bildeston?

On May 8, some of the squadron attended this year’s Sportivate event, another annual activity where squadrons compete against each other in touch rugby. Sportivate is a lottery funded organisation that provides free sports training for ages 11-25. 1331 came an impressive sixth out of 29 squadrons.

Do you love to sing? Join in on Monday evenings at Bildeston Primary School from 7-9pm.

Others commemorated Sgt George Ward at a service in Onehouse Church on May 8, a past member of the ATC and therefore an important time to reflect and pay respects for one of their own.

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET & DISTRICT MONDAY CLUB

Our enjoyable programme of events continues. The visit from The Muleskinners playing country & western music was very successful, as were the bacon rolls which members enjoyed. We have had a successful open night where we were able to welcome friends and parents to an evening of activities including a draw, tombola and cake and plant stall. Visitors were also able to browse through photographs taken during the year of the various activities. Also on display were the results of a craft evening when we made crowns and bunting in readiness for our party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. We plan to have a buffet and games to make it a fun evening. We are also looking forward to a visit from Stowmarket Concert Band. This is always a rousing evening, very much enjoyed by the members and helpers. Our AGM went very smoothly and our enthusiastic and hardworking officers and committee were re-elected. We are a club for adults with learning difficulties and meet each Monday from 7.30-9.30pm at the Community Hub in Crown Street, Stowmarket. We are run entirely by volunteers and new members and helpers are always very welcome. For further information, please contact us on 01449 672123 or just come along on a Monday evening.

ROTARY CLUB OF STOWMARKET GIPPING VALLEY Members recently visited the Norfolk Tank Museum near Long Stratton which houses a great collection of Cold War battle tanks and other tracked vehicles. They were given a ride over rough terrain in a small tank and trailer. Amongst the exhibits they were shown included Centurion, Chieftain Tanks and assorted armoured personnel carriers. The museum carries out as much restoration as possible with a team of dedicated volunteers. They aim to restore all the vehicles in their collection back to running order. Apart from their usual charity and fundraising activities, the Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley go on various outside visits, particularly in the summer months and are always looking for new members (both male and female) who are interested in good fellowship and service within the local community. We meet on Thursday evenings at the Cedars Hotel in Stowmarket. STOWMARKET BRIDGE CLUB Stowmarket Bridge Club was founded some 46 years ago and is affiliated to the English Bridge Union. Duplicate contract bridge is played on Wednesday evenings from 7pm and Friday afternoons from 2pm at Saint Mary’s Church Hall at the junction of Windermere Road and Dale Avenue in Stowmarket. Several years ago the club received support from Mid Suffolk District Council to help it to move to this site and more recently an automatic scoring system has been purchased which enables results to be viewed immediately at the end of play. The club enters a number of simultaneous duplicate pairs competitions in the UK and abroad and members have achieved some notable successes in recent years. The

As we walked through the bluebell woods, I thought he’d like this

club also runs its own scratch and handicap competitions over the year. New members and visitors are welcome, but a reasonable level of competence is needed and regrettably the club cannot at the moment cater for those wishing to learn the game from scratch. Bridge offers the chance for people to improve their mental ability and to maintain an active mind well into senior years, as well as an opportunity to meet new people in a sociable atmosphere. If you would like further information or a partner arranging please contact Arthur Winchester: 01449 612105 www.bridgewebs.stowmarket.co.uk

Peter then presented a cheque for £1,000 to Janie Rose of Stowmarket & Area Opportunities Group. WOOLSAFE APPROVED TECHNICIANS CARE FOR YOUR CARPETS SAFELY We are delighted to announce that three of our experienced technicians have qualified to Woolsafe standards for the safest, no risk cleaning and care for your carpets. In fact we now have more qualified Woolsafe fibre care technicians than any other company in the country. Have you ever questioned whether your carpets, rugs or soft furnishings should be cleaned? Many do and are normally persuaded it’s not worth it. But the answer is yes! They should be cleaned, but having the correct type of cleaning is the key factor to ensure the right results are achieved. A carpet cleaner is a carpet cleaner, right? No, wrong. We all believe that if something looks cleaner then it is cleaner, but when we look into it a bit deeper, we find some interesting answers. The most popular fibre used in carpets in the UK is wool. Wool is extremely good at hiding soil and responds extreme well to cleaning. However it is also extremely delicate. 95% of carpet cleaners in the UK are trained using American systems, but the carpets are mainly manmade synthetics. When they clean a wool fibre in the UK, it looks good until a few weeks later it starts to attract dirt quickly, feels course and gritty, spills become stains and the appearance is poor. Our Woolsafe approved technicians are trained and qualified to clean wool to the highest British standards, ensuring that the delicate fibres are not damaged in any way. With the correct tailored cleaning processes, we can ensure that the fibres are maintained and cleaned to extend the life and keep the luxurious appearance that wool deserves. If you have any questions regarding care for your home or business contact us for free advice and a no-obligation quote.

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET SALVATION ARMY CHARITY MOTORBIKE RIDE

PMR – GCA SUPPORT GROUP EAST ANGLIA

More than 50 riders turned out on Saturday, May 21 to support the fourth Stowmarket Salvation Army Charity Motorbike Ride.

The next meeting of the Polymyalgia Rheumatica – Giant Cell Arteritis Support Group will be held on Thursday, July 7 at Needham Market Community Centre. The meeting begins at 10.30am with refreshments and time for sufferers to speak together. This will be followed by a speaker from the Yellow Card Scheme which is vital in helping the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) monitor the safety of all healthcare products in the UK to ensure they are acceptably safe for patients and users.

The ride was approximately 50 miles and took riders through picturesque villages like Old Newton, Bacton, Thurston, Beyton, Hesset, Rattlesden and back to Stowmarket. It was great to see so many people turn up to support this event. The £500 raised will go towards the youth visit to Romania later this year, where they will visit families and orphanages and lead a holiday club for up to 100 children. For more details of future fundraising events please contact Jenny Johnson: jenny.johnson@salvationarmy.org.uk / 01449 614133

ARBORETUM GARDEN AT RED GABLES At Red Gables we are trying to develop the grounds into a wonderful arboretum garden and enhance an existing spinney to provide a lasting legacy for the local community to enjoy. We are applying for funding to try and make this happen. The plan is to create and maintain an informal woodland feel and an attractive recreational facility for user groups and the public to enjoy the Wellbeing hub of Red Gables. Planting of hedges at the frontage of the property will help screen and soften views to give a more intimate feel to the garden. The coniferous trees and the evergreen nature of the garden gives prefect conditions to add all-year-round colour. This will be enhanced with the planting of new trees and under-planting with shade loving plants and bulbs, and planting larger specimen trees where possible. The adjacent spinney is to be improved as a valuable wildlife sanctuary. The proposed work here will include planting with wild daffodil, snowdrops and bluebells, and under-planting with coppicable shrubs, which will look lovely through the year. Red Gables Manager Martyn Burnside says: “Wish us luck with the funding applications and we will keep you updated on progress.” Now we are pleased to welcome a new service at Red Gables. We are launching Gables Complementary Therapies with three therapists offering the following: • Jennifer Lynch is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for massage, reiki, Indian head massage and Soul Coaching • Louise Page is available Thursdays and Fridays for shiatsu • Victoria Chappell is available on Thursdays and Saturdays for massage Therapies are carried out in a comfortable upstairs room with sounds of birdsong drifting into your experience. Red Gables itself is set in beautiful mature woodland and parking is free. Taking time out to nurture ourselves is important, helping to restore balance and be better equipped to deal with life’s stresses and strains. Find out more by contacting Red Gables: 01449 673947 / GablesTherapies@gmail.com Red Gables Manager Martyn Burnside

It is hoped that café meet-ups which will be held on a regular basis and spread around East Anglia will be announced very soon, making it easier with less travelling for people to meet on an informal basis. The support group is very valuable to those who suffer from this disease who often feel isolated and forgotten. www.pmrgca.co.uk/group-pages/east-anglia

STOWMARKET SUGARCRAFT CLUB Our members were delighted to put on a display of sugarcraft in the church as part of their tribute to Her Majesty The Queen to celebrate her 90th birthday. We’re always happy to show the combined skills of our members. We are eagerly looking forward to our next meeting when we will welcome the Outrageous Cake Company for their first visit to us. The demonstration will show bas relief techniques, something of interest to us all. Our meetings are always on the second Monday of the month in St Mary’s Church Hall on Wolsey Road and visitors are very welcome. Meetings start at 7.30pm with a cuppa and a chat with the demonstration starting at 7.45pm. We recently started a website so if you want more information about our club visit: www stowmarketsugarcraft.co.uk

MP JO CHURCHILL VISITS ORCHARD BARN On Friday, May 27 the sun shone and the birds sang. It was a great day for a VIP visit to Orchard Barn and we were delighted to show MP Jo Churchill the work of more than 1,600 trainees and volunteers. Jo was with us for an hour and a half during which time we were able to show her the progress we are making constructing our new craft room using local trees in the round. Jo had a go at using a draw knife to make a peg and watched as Calvin debarked an elm log in preparation for use as a roof rafter. We were able to show Jo some of the benches we’ve made using green wood. The back of this bench is a piece of Cherry Plum from our orchard. The visit was attended by parish councillors from four adjacent parishes and 30 volunteers and trainees. It was great way to mark the success of the project and discuss plans to expand the range of traditional and natural building courses we offer. As a reminder of our slow and sustainable building project we gave Jo a snail paperweight (made from slate and hazel by OBee volunteers). Thank you for visiting, Jo, it was a pleasure to meet you. Visitors are welcome any Wednesday (other days by prior arrangement). We are SW of Mill Road, Battisford. www.orchardbarn.org.uk / 01473 658193

SCHOOLS / SPORT COMBS FORD PRIMARY SCHOOL

STOWMARKET CRICKET CLUB

Such exciting times at Combs Ford Primary School where our DIY SOS project is well and truly underway. We are transforming an old twin mobile classroom unit into a modern fully equipped facility for a new nursery and before/after school and holiday care. Work will soon be complete on the outside of the building. Volunteers have replaced windows, insulated the walls and floor and have begun cladding the outside of the building with Hardiplank boards. Work is due to start on the inside of the building very soon, ready for the facility to be up and ready for the children at the beginning of September 2016. If you would like to be involved with the project please contact headteacher Russell Clark or business manager Michelle Mead on 01449 613112. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So far this season the good weather has been matched by results on the pitch. At the time of writing, the weekend teams are handily placed in their respective leagues.

STOWMARKERS NETBALL CLUB I can’t believe that we are already in July and it will soon be the end of the school year. Many of our club players will then enjoy the long summer holidays, but Stowmarkers as a club continues to play netball throughout the summer. This gives the players the opportunity to work on their skills in preparation for the new league season. The club is hoping to enter a team into the South Suffolk league which begins in September. This is an excellent way for the players to gain more match experience and have lots of fun. The club will require an umpire for the season so if you are a beginner umpire and would like to be paid then please do get in contact with us via: www.stowmarkers-netball-club.co.uk Our netball sessions are as follows: Juniors aged 12-14: Wednesday evenings at Needham Market Community Centre (outside courts), 7-8pm Juniors aged 6-12: Saturday mornings at Stowupland High Sports Hall (indoors), 9-10am If you would like further information contact us via our website as above.

The big turnabout in fortunes has been seen in the 1st XI, which currently occupies second spot in a competitive league. Paul Blake and Dale Watling have scored the bulk of the runs, with Josh Finbow (7-39 vs. Kelvedon) and Kierran Haynes, ably supported by youngsters Stuart Lilley, George Tillbrook and Alex John, taking the bowling honours. The 2nd XI’s form has seen an improvement in results. Richard Baxter, Nick Mayhew and Jack Williams have scored crucial runs, and junior Trye, including a personal best 6-26, and Simon Codd have taken key wickets. Youngsters Harry Tillbrook, Lars Mardell, Grisha Rasmanov, Brad Finbow and Toby Lown have continued to show promise. The Sunday XI has maintained the good form of last year. Dale Watling (101 not out vs. Rougham) and Kierran Haynes have been amongst the runs. The bowling honours have been shared, Stuart Lilley being particularly impressive.

SPORT STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB

NEW FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES

By the time this issue drops through your doors we will be getting excited about the biggest and most famous tournament in the world, Wimbledon. At the time of writing there are several questions unanswered.

If you’re keen to try something a bit different, we are pleased to announce the opening of a new martial arts class in Stowupland.

Will Roger Federer play having pulled-out of the French Open before playing a match? Will Rafa Nadal play with his wrist injury preventing him from continuing in Paris and forcing him to pull-out of the Queen’s tournament? Having lost to Novak Djokovic in Paris, will Andy Murray regain his confidence to win another Grand Slam? Will Serena Williams put her defeat in the Paris final firmly behind her and win yet again at SW19? As usual, many more questions than answers, but the one thing you can be sure of is that tennis continues right through the weeks at our courts. We are right in the middle of the ‘crazy season’ at the club with team matches on three evenings every week against other clubs from the Ipswich & District league. The first few matches of our own annual club tournament are either being arranged or played with members keeping an eye on September 11 when they hope to be in the event for finals day. This year many of our new members are entered into the draw which is excellent for them and can provide a little more ‘cut and thrust’ above any amount of social play. We are planning to hold another open day on Sunday, July 3, a great opportunity to come along and see the club. There will be the chance to play a little, get a bit of free group coaching, and the chance to take advantage of some discounted memberships. This could be a very nice way to get back into tennis if you’ve been away for a while, or to take those first few steps into a great sport. Also on the horizon are the annual summer camps for juniors. As ever spaces will be strictly limited so if you want to secure a place get in contact with me. That’s probably enough news for now so see you on court! Senior Club Coach Chris Cunningham chris@chriscoaching.plus.com / 07761 142372

Arnis (also known as Eskrima and Kali) is the national sport and traditional martial art of the Philippines that emphasises weapon-based fighting with sticks, blades and various improvised weapons. In recent years, it has become more widely known through its use in major Hollywood films like The Bourne Identity and the Bond films. Modern Arnis, the style now taught in Stowupland, was founded in the 1960s by Remy Presas. His goal was to create an injury-free training method as well as an effective self-defence system in order to preserve the older Arnis systems. Although emphasis is put on weapons, modern Arnis also includes handto-hand combat, joint locks, grappling (dumog) and weapon disarming techniques. As well as keeping the classes varied and interesting, this blend makes modern Arnis particularly useful for modern-day selfdefence. It makes for splendid co-ordination practice too as training normally begins with two weapons, either a pair of sticks or a stick and a training knife. Arnis emphasises keeping both hands in use and never moving them in the same direction, and trains practitioners to become ambidextrous. Training this way develops the ability to use both limbs independently, a valuable skill, even when working with a single weapon. Classes are taught by Maestro Eric Amada who began his Arnis training alongside Aikido before moving from the Philippines. Here in the UK, he is an executive member of the BCKEAI, a national body aimed at bringing together the very best teachers of each of the Arnis’ many different styles. One of the most respected (and liked) Arnis teachers in the UK, it’s great to have him start a class in the Stowmarket area. The class caters for all levels of experience, and complete beginners are always welcome, as are students from other arts looking to supplement their existing skills. Classes take place at Stowupland Sports Centre (at the high school) on Tuesday evenings, from 7-8.30pm. For more information, contact Eric on: ericamada@hotmail.com

STOWMARKET TOWN YOUTH FC This was the 25th season in the history of Stowmarket Town Youth Football Club. Started with just one team and called Stow Youth, the club has grown year on year since ending its first season in 1991. Now part of Stowmarket Town Football Club, the youth section has 18 teams ranging from U7s to U18s, including one girl’s team. We now have 240 players, starting from as young as three-years-old attending our free Saturday morning club at Wood Ley School. This season we have celebrated being awarded FA Charter Standard Development Club accreditation. A number of our teams have tasted success this season, with our U9 Wasps, U12s, U13 Hornets, U15 Hornets and U16 Hornets all doing well in their leagues and reaching cup finals. The club is not all about winning trophies, with the main ethos being to provide safe, organised football to as many children as possible from in and around the Stowmarket area. We have seen record numbers of players this season and expect this to rise again next season. We recently held our end of season presentation day at Greens Meadow Stadium, Bur Road, Stowmarket. Ex-premier league footballer Ian Marshall presented the players with their awards. He now runs the Ian Marshall Football Academy and, working in partnership, youngsters learning their football coaching skills at the academy will be running sessions for our teams.

www.keepingintouchwith.com/stowmarket

It has been a busy year for the club, with some of our players being ball boys/girls at Portman Road for the Suffolk FA Premier Cup final. We have also launched our new website where you will find details of all our teams and upcoming events: www.stowtownyouth.co.uk As the club continues to increase in size it becomes increasingly difficult to find the necessary facilities within the town for them all to play and train. Plus many teams are having to hire winter training facilities elsewhere as no appropriate facilities exist within Stowmarket itself. We have been fortunate to receive grants from Stowmarket Town Council and Mid Suffolk councillors to help towards the costs of hiring these facilities. We hope that in the future our club will be able to provide the facilities needed for the youngsters we serve. The club prides itself in trying to keep player fees as low as possible and we rely heavily on sponsorship for teams kits and equipment. If anyone is interested in learning more about sponsorship opportunities please email: info@stowtownyouth.co.uk A number of our teams will be looking for new players ready for next season, so if you want to play for a family friendly club please email info@stowtownyouth.co.uk for details.

SPORT SCORPION MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY Following on from the blackbelt exams grandmaster Roy Kilner, president of the British Taekwondo Association, ran a seminar for the junior and senior members of the academy.

Seven members of the academy recently achieved their blackbelts in universal karate. All seven were put through a gruelling four hour physical grading that covered the entire karate syllabus. They also had to complete an 180 question exam paper as well as attend multiple assessments prior to the actual blackbelt test. The grading panel consisted of Grandmaster Roy Kilner – 8th dan, Grandmaster Mark JR Trent – 8th dan, Senior Master Andy Lewis – 5th dan, Coach Dave Fell – 3rd dan and instructors Mel Walmsley – 1st dan, Max Walmsley – 1st dan and Luke Ellis – 1st dan. The new junior 1st dan blackbelts are Maisie Allen, Kiera Holder, TJ Phair, Alex Utteridge and Sam Johnson. Senior Peter Izzard upgraded to 3rd dan blackbelt in wado ryu karate and Senior Hannah Povah graded to her 4th dan master level blackbelt and also became the first female in the Scorpion Academy to become a recognised master.

Martin Shaddick’s first cage fight Scorpion MMA fighter Martin Shaddick recently competed in the contenders 15 cage fight show at Norfolk Showground. The academy has had several fighters compete over the years and this was a great opportunity for Martin to take part and gain valuable experience. He was up against a very experienced Norwegian fighter who proved too much for Martin’s first ever cage fight. However, his performance was excellent and he demonstrated true warrior spirit throughout and is keen to fight again. A big thank you to head coach Steve Gill and to instructor and head cornerman Mike Oglesby. Laser hunt training The junior section had another one of their laser hunt training sessions. More than 30 juniors took part, learning different skills as well as plenty of games. A big thank you to Paul Hunt for the use of his laser guns and his expertise. The academy has many more events coming up including the Stowmarket Striders Golden Mile charity run, a demonstration at Combs Fete, a half triathlon, interclub sparring tournaments, seminars and fundraising events. All new members get one month free. www.scorpionacademy.co.uk / www.ufkka.org.uk
