A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I hope you value the fact that we aim to produce a monthly magazine with a balance of advertising and editorial content, providing essential information about products and services we all require and supporting local business in doing so, while also providing relevant local news which enables residents to engage with the local community and keep in touch with local news and events. As editor I juggle this rather delicate balance very carefully and encourage readers to support the advertisers who enable Mansion House Publishing (MHP) to design, print and deliver the magazine every month and to support an enormous range of fundraising activities and charities. You’ll find quite a few in this edition and I hope you can support the efforts of those who make them happen. One which I’d like to highlight this month, and which we have made a commitment to support until the project has been completed, is The Blossom Appeal, a Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals charity set up to develop a £2.5 million Breast Centre at Ipswich Hospital. The new centre will bring all elements of breast care at Ipswich Hospital under one roof and provide an environment where patients can be imaged, biopsied where necessary, and see their clinician in one appointment without the need to get dressed and undressed several times. There will also be new dedicated clinics for men and young people. We’ll provide regular updates, promote fundraising events and let you know how you can help. Right now they are looking for people to open their gardens in 2019. All types and size of garden are welcome. You choose when to open. Simply ask visitors for a donation to view your garden and sell refreshments, plants or crafts to boost your fundraising. Register your garden at www.colchesteripswichcharity.org.uk/opengardens or for more information contact: charity@esneft.nhs.uk / 0300 770 1369 To find out more about The Blossom Appeal please visit: www.colchesteripswichcharity.org.uk/breast

ActivSheds is launching its fabulous new facilities on Friday, March 22 at the CRESS Pavilion, Halifax Road, Ipswich IP2 8RE. In the past year, our merry band of shedders have been working hard to build an extension, as well as designing and making work benches for people with disabilities, alongside other improvements and additions. The new look ActivShed, part of ActivGardens’ People’s Community Garden, has been kindly funded through Suffolk Community Foundation by Fonnereau Road Health Foundation, Pound Gates and Sevatas and private donors. Representatives of these organisations will be present to cut the ribbon at 11.30am. The launch will run alongside our spring CRESS plant and produce market, with seedlings to plant on your plot, bedding plants to spruce up your garden or windowsills, and freshly picked produce to perk you up after the long winter. Young people from a local school will be hosting our CRESS Community Café with a range of delicious goodies in the spirit of the day. And of course ActivSheds items such as bird boxes, hedgehog homes, garden obelisks and more will be available for sale on the day. Our enthusiastic team will also be ready to take orders for bespoke items and are happy to quote for renovating garden benches and furniture. The project, which is part of ActivLives charity, runs every Friday morning and at other times of the week by arrangement. Our ‘men in sheds’ are keen to pass on their skills to the younger generation, and the new facilities will enable older people who need support or may be in the early stages of dementia to keep active in a social way. Other groups who would like to set up a shed project are encouraged to come along to the launch to meet our shedders, or get in touch to share ideas. Thursday, March 28: Get Buzzing for Spring Everything you need to know to start out in beekeeping and essential knowledge for your first year of keeping bees. These free sessions are designed to be fun, accessible and sociable – but places are limited, so please book. Supervised children are very welcome. The project will bring women together in an active way to learn and share skills and improve their health and wellbeing in a welcoming environment. Women will be able to engage and develop at a pace to suit them, fitting around responsibilities of home and children, and doing as much as they are able. The project, funded through Suffolk Community Foundation, will involve women of all ages, abilities and ethnicities in learning and sharing skills and developing new opportunities for themselves. It will bring older women and younger women together in a spirit of sharing and co-operation. Existing volunteers will act as ‘Garden Companions’ to help newcomers settle in and learn horticultural skills.
The group relies on the goodwill of volunteers to help in the kitchen, with preparations and tidying away, as well as engaging clients in discussion and with various activities, such as indoor games, cognitive exercises and singing. Gippeswyk Singers, Phoenix Singers and Beccles Choral Society are delighted to announce they will be joining forces under the musical direction of their conductor Geoff Lavery to present Verd’si Requiem on Saturday, May 11 at 7.30pm at Snape Maltings Concert Hall.
Andy has been working across East Anglia for the last 15 years and over the last two years on the East Anglia One cable route. He will talk about the amazing and unexpected finds discovered during this work, some close to Martlesham, including an exciting array of new settlement evidence, an exceptional prehistoric monument, trackway and artefacts that may coincide with the earliest settlements and agriculture in the region approximately 4,000 years BC, some of which were featured on BBC4’s Digging for Britain last year and in the local press. This fascinating talk will be on Monday, March 11, 7.30pm at St Michaels Church Centre, The Drift, Martlesham Heath IP5 3PL. The venue is fully accessible with adjacent free parking. Thundering drums and heralding trumpets of the Lambeth Orchestra will have you tingling from head to toe as they join a magnificent massed chorus and four outstanding international soloists in filling the wonderful acoustic at Snape Maltings with glorious resonance. Verdi’s operatic skill shines forth in his Requiem, creating an unforgettable choral masterpiece filled with great lyrical beauty and dramatic passion. This performance also includes Fanfare for Verdi Brass by contemporary composer Simon Milton. Geoff Lavery brings his vast experience and formidable talent as a musical director and conductor to the production which features soloists Elin Pritchard (soprano), Kate Woolveridge (mezzo soprano), John Upperton (tenor) and Andrew Slater (bass baritone). Gippeswyk Singers and Beccles Choral Society have previously collaborated with Lambeth Orchestra at Snape Maltings for a sell-out performance of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius which received tremendous reviews in May 2017. IPSWICH PHILATELIC SOCIETY Our last meeting was a member’s display evening where members brought along items to display from their own collections. As usual it turned out to be very entertaining. We were treated to exhibits of early fiscal stamps and informed how they were made and where the money raised went – to finance the ten year war with France. We were also shown some very early penny blacks on covers from our local area and some Channel Island issues from the Second World War. April is a busy month as we have Richard Hall talking about Apartheid & Cape of Good Hope on Wednesday 3 and our annual auction is at Cedarwood School on April 17 with viewing from 5pm and the auction starting at 6.45pm. It’s the perfect opportunity to buy more stamps or to start a collection. On Saturday 27 we have our Stamp Fair at Kesgrave Community Centre from 10am to 4pm. At this event we are also hosting STAMPESSEX which will give you the opportunity to buy and sell stamps from a number of dealers and also to view the spring competition entries from across Essex and South Suffolk. This event is a great opportunity to find out more about philately/ stamp collecting. For further information contact Mike Smith: 01473 403904 / michaelsmith1949@gmail.com / www.ipswichphilatelic.uk

GETTING BRIDGE PLAYED IN SCHOOLS Ipswich and Kesgrave Bridge Club (I&K) has taken its first steps into junior Bridge by visiting local primary schools as part of our strategy to get more people playing the game in our area. In December, members of I&K ran an afternoon Bridge session with pupils in Years 5 and 6 at Elmsett Primary School where pupils learnt the basics of the game from counting points, following suit and winning tricks in partnership. At a more local level, Heath Primary School has started a Thursday afternoon Bridge Club (supported by I&K). The club is open to Key Stage 2 students and has been well received by the school and pupils alike. Already, pupils are learning about leads, signals and card combinations. The club also featured on the Heath News website where students were interviewed about what they had learned. It just goes to prove you are never too young or old to learn Bridge! If you are a Bridge player and want to know more about the various ways we look to help our members improve their game, or just want to know more about us, please visit our website or contact us at: greencj06@hotmail.co.uk / www.bridgewebs.com/ipswich
ORWELL FLOWER CLUB On January 24 we had a return visit from Debbie Buckle from Kirton. Debbie is a florist and her arrangements were really lovely and so different. Her flowers were of a very high standard and the evening was a great success. Her knowledge about flowers is amazing and the whole evening was enjoyed by all who attended. For our February meeting we will have Kate Stangaad from Essex with The Sound of Bow Bells. At the time of writing it doesn’t much feel like spring is on the way, but there are some hopeful signs: many buds and bulbs are peeping out, the mornings are much lighter and the days slightly longer. Generally this is the time to get the ground ready for planting and also start some actual planting. Here’s what you can do: • sow seeds in a nursery bed for brussels sprouts, summer cabbage, broccoli, onions • sow into open ground in rows: early beetroot, carrot, lettuce, parsnip, spring onions, peas, broad beans and turnips • plant onion sets, shallots and garlic • sow in trays in the greenhouse: celeriac, celery, French beans and cauliflower • plant bare rooted fruit bushes – the damp soil is easier to dig
In September we will be holding an open meeting when we will be meeting at Kesgrave Community Hall, Bell Lane, Kesgrave. We hold an open meeting every three years. This year Lee Berrall from Northampton will be the demonstrator. Tickets will be £18 to include a buffet before the meeting and there will be various stalls for you to browse at. Tickets will be available from March and can be obtained from Delcie Corbett, details below. We look forward to seeing you and many visitors. Orwell Flower Club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month, except at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew. Demonstrations start at 7.15pm but the doors open by 6.45pm to allow you to browse at our sales tables and buy raffle tickets for the arrangement created in the demonstrations. The £40 annual subscription is due on March 31. Visitors are always welcome at £5 per meeting. For further details please contact Delcie Corbett: 01473 623371 / gil.corbett@btinternet.com

YOUR LOCAL EXPERTS FOR RIVER CRUISING In November 2018, 15 Fred Olsen Travel staff members travelled to Paris for the CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) River Cruise Conference. During the weekend, staff were able to get insight and knowledge from a whole host of industry and river cruise experts in this fast growing sector. At Fred Olsen Travel, we have been working hard over the past 12 months to make sure we are ‘the specialists’ in river cruise and have grown our river business by over 100 per cent in 2018. Our hard work paid off, as we were incredibly proud to pick up the award for Best Overall Performance as a River Cruise Agent in the whole of the south of England at the conference. This recognition against much larger competition enhances our own opinion that we have the most knowledgeable river cruise agents going, and with ongoing training, ship visits and marketing, we will be going all out to further promote this area of travel in 2019. With many staff now having experienced various companies, ships, rivers and itineraries, we are confident that, if you need any advice or expertise on whether a river cruise should be your next holiday, staff at your local Fred Olsen Travel Agents are definitely the people to talk to. We have also just been advised that we are shortlisted for another award in the TTG Top 50 Travel Agencies in the River Cruise Category. We will find out if we have won on April 25. A NIGHT OUT WITH IPSWICH TOWN PASTORS Town Pastors is a voluntary organisation that operates in a number of towns in Suffolk and beyond. Visible in their yellow hi-viz jackets with the Town Pastor Logo and baseball cap (woolly hat in winter), they patrol in pairs on Friday and Saturday nights, late into the night, looking out for people who have had a little too much to drink, lost their friends, or who may just need some water or a bit of chocolate. Over the past twelve years we have become known and respected by late-night revellers, often with a remark such as “You saved my brother from a night in the cells”, or “You looked after my mate when she was blind drunk”.

The night-time economy – bars, clubs, fast food outlets and taxi services – that operate until up to four in the morning (and the police presence required to cover it) is something of which most of us are totally unaware. At night a different animal walks the town. Nighttime Ipswich is nothing like Ipswich in the daytime. Young and notquite so young people come into the town centre in groups to have a good time. The main flow of pedestrian traffic is between the Cattle Market and Cardinal Park. At two in the morning Silent Street is not particularly silent as alcohol seems to make people think everyone else is hard of hearing. The atmosphere is largely friendly and safe. In our early days it was more like the Wild West, with tension and fighting going on all around, but things have settled remarkably over the years. Our work is often with people who have become casualties of drink, and sometime people who’ve been taking other substances. We’ll stay with them, give them water, help to sober them up, and eventually get them to a taxi. Taxi drivers do not take anyone who looks drunk in case they throw up in the taxi. Sometimes we’re able to call mum or dad, or hubby-at-home, and they’ll come out to fetch their loved ones. We meet and assist many people celebrating their eighteenth birthday who have seriously miscalibrated their capacity for alcohol. We sometimes come across people who are by themselves. One young lady had been ditched by her friends because she’d got too drunk, and they left her on a bench by herself and went off to the next club venue without her. Another had been in an abusive relationship and we spent time listening to what she’d been through and how her partner’s manipulative treatment of her left her with no self-worth. One young man asked us where the nearest car park was. He didn’t look like he’d be safe driving a car. He was actually looking for a highrise building so that he could throw himself off it. We tried to get him to talk, but he marched off at speed. Town Pastors are recruited from churches, so prayer is one of our tools in situations like these. We did just that, praying that he’d find a couple of police officers who could assess and refer him. We tried to keep up, but lost him. As we came out into the Cattle Market he was nowhere to be seen. We looked back and realised we’d walked straight past him, flanked safely by two police officers. A young lady poured out to us the story of her abortion a few months ago. She was overcome by guilt and shame, and said she didn’t deserve to be alive. Her friends, mother and the boyfriend had pushed her to get rid of the baby, and now she was filled with grief and selfcondemnation. Our offer to pray for her was taken up, and she joined us in a prayer for forgiveness, and accepting that she was loved. Homelessness is a problem in all our towns. We meet people who are clearly living rough, but we are also aware of people who, even though they have somewhere to live, will still come out to beg. Some of our homeless are casualties of their poor mental health, unable to meet the expectations of housing and other rehabilitation agencies. Have you considered joining us? Take a look at our website and Facebook page to find out more. www.ipswichtownpastors.org.uk

HEATH PRIMARY SCHOOL NURSERY Wow, I can’t believe it is nearly half term already. The children have been busy learning about machines and robots this half term. They created two giant junk box robots out of the recycled materials that they collected as part of our Planet Protection topic, and then they made their own mini-bots and designed their own machines in the robot tinker shop. We also had a surprise visit from Elmer which has given us inspiration to design our own Elmer elephants for the St. Elizabeth’s Hospice Learning Parade. We have also had lots of fun reading different versions of the traditional tale The Three Little Pigs, which linked nicely with our Chinese New Year – The Year of the Pig – celebrations. As part of our celebrations, we printed Chinese blossoms on wall hangings, played with five spice play dough, built the Great Wall of China from Duplo and used chopsticks to collect lucky coins from the water tray of rice. We were also able to link our weekly cooking activity to Chinese New Year: the children made Chinese spring rolls, which involved cutting a selection of seven vegetables including bean sprouts, pepper and ginger before mixing with Chinese spices, egg noodles and soy sauce and rolling in filo pastry. Nursery Open Morning: Wednesday, March 6, 9.30am Although our school nursery is full at the moment, we are now accepting applications and allocating places for September 2019. If you would like to find out more about our fantastic, teacher-led school nursery, and see us in action, come along to our open morning. If you can’t make this date or time, then don’t worry. You can call the school office on 01473 622806 and arrange an appointment for a guided tour at a time that is convenient to you. Nursery Teacher Helen Whatley

KESGRAVE & NORTHGATE KARATE NEWS The club has kicked 2019 off to a flying start! On Sunday, January 13, five club members travelled to Leicester Arena to compete in the EKF Kyu Grade National Championships. Chloe Campbell, Jessica Etherington, Amelia Clow, Dylan Barnes and Callum Evans represented the club at the first national championships of 2019. In her first national championship, Chloe didn’t medal but gained valuable experience. Dylan performed really well and achieved a bronze medal in 14-15 year old boys Kata. Amelia and Jessica found themselves in the awkward position of meeting each other in the final! Jessica had to settle for second place this time, meaning Amelia is the new EKF Kyu Grade National Kata Champion (14-15 year old girls). Callum Evans also found himself in a national championships final, having to fight for the Team Kumite gold medal. Unfortunately the team were just out-scored, but still left Callum with a fantastic silver medal. It was then off to Germany for the Hamburg Open on February 2, where club member and instructor Georgie Lawson came away with gold in the under-21 open weight Kumite and silver in the -61kg Kumite. Fantastic results! From 7pm on Friday, April 5 we are holding our Family Race Night at Kesgrave Social Club on Edmonton Road. The event is open to the public so do come along and join us for an entertaining evening and a chance to win some races and fantastic prizes. Tickets can be purchased on the door or in advance from the karate club. Please email sharonmbuckley@hotmail.com or visit our Facebook page @northgatekarate for further information. We are a family friendly Karate club and welcome new members. Karate is a great way to make new friends and there are always rewarding opportunities available. Regular practice has continual benefits, both physical and mental. It increases fitness/stamina, strength/tone, flexibility, balance, self-confidence, self-control, mental awareness and co-ordination. We offer a free trial lesson, so why not come along and give Karate a go? SPORT / CHURCH NEWS IPSWICH WANDERERS FC
BIXLEY FARM CHURCH AT TOWER HALL
Wanderers ended their run of defeats by knocking Haverhill out of the Suffolk Senior Cup in an interesting quarterfinal at The Doucy, Wanderers’ home ground. The final score of 2-0 could have been bigger, but the home crowd were happy to see their team break the recent duck and move into the last four of this prestigious competition. The draw for the semi-finals will include Cornard United, Achilles and Henley. At the time of writing Suffolk FA have not made the draw or named the dates of the ties.
Mothering Sunday is on March 31. This is a special day set aside to give thanks for mothers all over the world. If you can be with your mother, why not bring her along to Tower Hall on Sunday at 4pm to join with other mothers, relax and have tea and cake to thank them for all they do? We will be praising God for the selfless love of mothers all over the world and praying for mothers who aren’t able to provide children with the life they want for them. There will be an activity for children and a time for them to give thanks to their mothers.
Promotion back to the Premier Division is now just a distant hope, but the Suffolk Senior Cup is firmly in the plans of 1st Team managers Mark Goldfinch and James Buckle. It has just been announced that the final will be played at Portman Road in May so our season is still very much alive.
Our Alpha course which seeks to introduce the basics of Christian faith started at the end of January and there is a small group of people meeting every Sunday at 1pm at Tower Hall. They meet to share a meal, watch a short video and discuss questions about life and Christian faith in a non-judgemental way. At a time when truths can seem illusive and making exclusive claims for a particular faith seems against the spirit of the age, come and share your doubts and find out what the Christian faith is all about. Call the number below or email: pete@mie.org.uk

Prayer is essential to our Christian lives. “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” Matthew 18:20. We organise extra prayer meetings for 45mins at Tower Hall on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm and again at 8pm. Different people attend on each occasion and anyone is welcome to pray, listen or ask for prayer. If something is troubling you or you want to give thanks please come and join us. There are also now two evening home groups meeting locally on Tuesdays and on alternate Wednesdays. These are small groups that join together to study God’s word. We are currently looking at the person of Christ. We also enjoy fellowship and refreshments. If you would like find out more or join a home group please contact us via the details below. As always, everyone is welcome to join us each Sunday for our regular weekly service at Tower Hall from 4-5pm. There are opportunities to speak to clergy or other members of the church, with time for personal prayer at the end. Holy Communion is celebrated every other Sunday. For further information/questions visit www.mie.org/bixley or contact: office@mie.org.uk / 01473 270978 Each month our pastor sets a different theme. This month our church theme is ‘Do You Know Him?’. We have been asked to examine our relationship with God and our scripture reference comes from the Book of Mark chapter 8, verses 27 to 29 where Jesus first asks His disciples ‘who do men say that I am?’ and then ‘but who do you say that I am?’. Pastor’s question to us is ‘do we know Him for ourselves through our own learning, experiences and relationship or is it through what other people say?’. Everyone has different ways of learning. It is said there are seven styles of gaining knowledge – visual, aural, verbal, physical, logical, social and solitary. Oftentimes these overlap and are mixed, but we are all in there somewhere and at times we may use any or all of them. Unfortunately most education systems only use book based teaching, repetition and pressure exams to get results and those whose style doesn’t fall into those categories are all to often dismissed with less than complimentary labels. God sees us all as equals and has time for each and every one of us. Want to find out how we see God then… See you on Sunday. Join us on Sunday mornings at 11.30am (Adult and Children’s Sunday Schools 10.30am) at The Ark Church, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR. You can contact us via email at arkipswichuk@gmail.com. We can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter @arkipswich or online at www.arkipswich.co.uk where you will find up-to-date information on what’s happening at the Ark each week.
