A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
NEWS
Jack wanted to hold a roadside cake sale to raise money for charity, but couldn’t decide who to donate the money to. Old people were his first choice so I suggested Age UK Suffolk. Then he decided it should go to people who don’t have a place to live so we decided on Shelter. Next it was to help people with cancer so we added Cancer Research UK to the list. We sat there for an hour or so with our little picnic table, offering free squash with every purchase and the option to buy a copy of Jack’s Little Blue Book of Bits and Bones, drawings of some of the many odd bits Jack has picked up on scavenger hunts in the woods and compiled into a book with grandpa’s help. My son definitely has a generous soul, but in this instance I think book sales was his main objective. He did sell three copies and we raised £4 for each of our chosen charities, so not a bad result overall. The best part was meeting people. Most of our customers were walking past but one lovely couple stopped in their car to see what we were up to and purchased four buns and a copy of the book. Turns out they have just moved into the house three doors up and this was their first opportunity, and ours, to meet. I dread to think how long it would have taken otherwise. Everyone seems so busy these days, racing from one appointment to another. I feel like I’m juggling all the time and rarely feel satisfied that I’ve done any one thing as well as I’d have liked. Time with extended family and neighbours, to get involved in community events or to volunteer in any capacity, seems impossible, but thank goodness so many people manage to conquer this balancing act. Those who do are the ones who collect for charity, who volunteer at schools and libraries, who organise fundraising events, who take part in all sorts of fundraising activities, who share themselves with others who may not be able to get out and about so easily. Where would we be without these angels? My paltry £12 split three ways is no more than a token effort which I’m unlikely to repeat in a hurry, but in the coming months we will have several opportunities to support the efforts of others dedicated to raising money for one cause or another. So don’t drive by. Stick your hand in your pocket and throw a few coins in the pot, and if you’re not in a hurry take a moment to chat.

FUNDING BOOST FOR ACTIVLIVES’ PEOPLE’S COMMUNITY GARDEN ActivLives has received £19,990 thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The funding boost from Postcode Local Trust will enable ActivLives People’s Community Garden to create a wild learning project at ActivLives’ community garden. The Nature on Your Doorstep project will involve garden volunteers of all ages and abilities, including local families and school groups. Activities will involve planting species which are good for bees and other insects, building habitats, recording species, and learning about how everyone can do their bit in their own street, local green space or garden – or even on their windowsill. As part of the project, there will a chance to get involved in beekeeping and birdwatching, as well as construction of bird boxes and hedgehog homes. Participants can learn how to construct a bird hide and help create a bee and butterflyfriendly trail. We will also be improving facilities for wheelchair-users and people with restricted mobility. Gardens Development Manager Susannah Robirosa said: “We would like to thank players of People’s Postcode Lottery for helping us to make our community garden bloom for nature. Please come and visit us and get involved.” Postcode Local Trust exists to fund community groups and charitable organisations through a variety of grant giving programmes. To do so, the trust relies solely on funding from the proceeds of tickets sales from People’s Postcode Lottery. When you sign up to play People’s Postcode Lottery, your postcode is your ticket. It costs £10 for 10 draws paid monthly in advance with prizes every day. A minimum of 30% goes directly to charities across Great Britain and internationally. For more information, or if you would like to book a visit or activity session for a community group, nursery or school at the People’s Community Garden as part of this project, please contact Susannah Robirosa: 01473 345350 / 07530 407302 / susannah@activlives.org.uk www.activlives.org.uk/activgardens 3

IPSWICH COUNTRY MARKET British, delicious and local to you, from your local country market As we move into October and mark the end of British Summer Time we would like to be able to tell you about the amazing range of autumn fruits and vegetables that our growers have on offer, but it has been a difficult growing season, with so little rain, and added to that one of our producers’ chickens decided to nibble the pumpkin patch. Despite these setbacks we always have a wide variety of genuinely homebaked goods and preserves, home-produced craft items, plus homegrown seasonal vegetables, fruit, flowers and plants. Cakes and preserve recipes have often been passed down through the generations, so you won’t find anything like them in your local supermarket. Our products do not contain any added preservatives, and we always have on offer a range of increasingly popular gluten free items. Our producers are of all ages and from all walks of life, but they are all passionate about offering the best quality local produce. All products sold at Ipswich Country Market are made by the members themselves in their own kitchens, grown in their own gardens or crafted in their own homes. With half term this month, why not bring the younger members of your family along for a treat? You will find a warm welcome and a real community atmosphere. We are open on Thursday mornings from 10.15-11.30am at Rushmere Village Hall on Humber Doucy Lane.
For further information about grants and application forms visit: www.rogerdavidburrows.co.uk
We have plenty of free parking and home baked refreshments with a free tea or coffee on your first visit. Where else could you have a cheese scone or sample a slice of cake with a drink for around a pound? On the first Thursday of the month we sell bacon rolls for only £1!

We’ll let you into a secret. You’re welcome as our guest at any regular club meeting of your friendly neighbourhood speakers’ club Speak Easy at Martlesham.
Ipswich Lions Club recently presented a cheque for £3,300 to the East Suffolk Prostate Cancer Support Group.
We meet every Thursday fortnight at the Richards Room in Martlesham (alongside Felixstowe Road, behind the Tesco superstore). We’re part of Toastmasters International, a global organisation with more than 90 years of experience in encouraging and developing public speaking. Our structured meetings include impromptu speaking, formal speaking and evaluation. Evaluation is a vital part of how Toastmasters’ clubs operate. When you evaluate someone else’s speaking you not only help them to improve and develop, you also help your own speaking. All the activities are part of the Toastmasters ‘educational track’, a series of books and materials that guide you through speaking-related projects. There’s also opportunities to improve your leadership skills in parallel. It’s up to you how far and how fast you progress. Speak Easy at Martlesham is all about learning to speak in a friendly, encouraging and enjoyable environment. The charity was chosen as last year’s president project and the cheque was presented to Chris Southcote from the East Suffolk Prostate Cancer Support Group by past president Terry Hunt. This money will fund a screening program for the men of Ipswich to check for the onset of cancer cells. If detected early prostate cancer can be treated, so men diagnosed can make a full recovery. Lion Terry chose East Suffolk Prostate Cancer Support Group as his charity for his year after attending one of the screening evenings, but due to the event being over subscribed he was unable to be tested. Chris was overwhelmed by this generous donation. He said: “We have never been given such a large amount in a single donation. This money will probably stretch to fund two screening evenings and will make a real difference. Thank you.” The test for prostate cancer takes the form of a simple blood test. The sample is then sent to a lab for analysis and results are then forwarded by letter.
IPSWICH AND DISTRICT SOROPTIMIST CLUB So what is the verdict? As we have to get copy to the editor by the 10th of each month this report is being written in the middle of Helen’s trial. Of course by the time the magazine lands on doormats everyone will know! Views about the Rob/Helen saga in The Archers may vary. Domestic violence is a key issue for Soroptimists and we have liked the clear focus on domination as the root of abuse. As it happens we have recently funded copies of Living with the Dominator, a handbook for the Freedom Programme, a widely used course to help victims of abuse understand what has been happening to them and regain their confidence and self belief. Another related issue has cropped up since one of our members heard of a poster and leaflets produced in Norfolk They explain in the languages of local migrant workers the support available to victims of domestic abuse. We are investigating if there is an equivalent in Suffolk and, if not, whether the Norfolk materials could be adopted here. We realised that we had not thought of the women in these particular communities; it’s important for them to know that they have rights here and to have easy access to information about how to get help if necessary. Our meeting on October 12 could be a bit more cheerful. After a supper of scampi and chips we shall hear about the progress of our regional project among children in Africa – a lot of good news and smiling faces. We are always pleased to welcome anyone who would like to come and hear a speaker, join in a discussion or share a meal with us. For more details and directions please call Jackie: 01473 659314

SUFFOLK AVIATION HERITAGE GROUP’S VINTAGE AND CLASSIC DAY September has seen the usual swirl of preparations for the museum’s annual Autumn Vintage and Classic Day to be held on Sunday, October 9. This year’s show has been merged with elements of the currently discontinued spring and summer events to produce a larger and more diverse range of attractions. In addition to the usual array of beautifully restored vehicles, the show will feature an exhibition of scale models including aircraft and a wonderful display of model boats, which featured in last year’s spring show and proved to be a huge attraction. Other features this year include favourites like Pete Route’s spectacular display of classic speedway bikes and racing leathers and, new to the show, a Dukes of Hazzard Dodge Charger, which is sure to be a significant attraction. Also new for this year, a working scale locomotive, operated by the Ipswich Model Engineering Society, will offer steam train rides for the kids. Alongside the ever popular stationary engines, which will be running throughout the day, a scale tank battle area will feature a number of impressive 16th scale military tanks, owned and operated by museum members relishing the joys of a second childhood. It is hoped this new feature will develop as an attraction in the coming years. The organisers are keeping their fingers crossed for the same good weather that has graced the event in previous years, as participation of a number of the attractions is, quite understandably, subject to conditions on the day.
Our open meeting is at Kesgrave Community Centre on Thursday, October 27 when national demonstrator John Chennell from Wellingborough will present Autumnal Equinox. Tickets will be £15 to include a light buffet and a fruit punch. We welcome all members and non-members, friends and families. Orwell Flower Club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month (except August and December) at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew IP4 5SU. Our demonstration starts at 7.15pm. The doors open by 6.45pm to allow you to browse at our sales table and buy raffle tickets for the arrangements created in the demonstration. The annual subscription, due at the AGM in April, is £37. Visitors are always welcome at £4 a meeting. For further details please contact the secretary Delcie Corbett: 01473 623371 / gil.corbett@btinternet.com
SUFFOLK STITCHERS & KNITTERS There are ‘knit and natter’ groups which meet on a regular basis, and others who prefer to stitch and knit at home. We make items for charities both at home and abroad for all age groups such as jumpers, hats, scarves, toys and clothes for premature babies. Another project concerns the knitting of squares which are then assembled into blankets. The items are sent around the world to orphanages, to organisations who shelter street children and families who live in dire poverty. Similarly, our work is sent to such charities in the UK which support those escaping domestic violence We are part of a national charity, Volunteering Matters, which helps us to obtain grant applications. There a number of groups in the Ipswich area, which can found at: www.volunteeringmatters.org.uk
The show is open from 10am to 4pm with admission priced at £3.50 for adults, £1.50 for retirees, 50p for Under 16s and pre-school age free.
There is an open day on the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Old Crown Court in Ipswich, where you will find wool, fabric, needles, patterns and much more.

AUTUMN AT RSPB FLATFORD WILDLIFE GARDEN As the days shorten, the temperature drops and the central heating button starts to beckon, it can be easy to forget about what’s happening out in the garden, but life goes on out there as autumn progresses and the wildlife is as busy as ever. The insects will have an easier time of it if we provide some late nectar and pollen sources in the form of late-flowering plants such as sedums, asters and Michaelmas daisies. Many insects over-winter, some going on to provide food for hungry birds in springtime. Our butterfly numbers, of Peacocks and Red Admirals for example, have been very low this year, possibly because of the long and heavy rains during June, so it’s very important that the latest broods that did manage to emerge late in the summer have the chance to feed well before hiding away for the winter in nooks and crannies around Photo: Andy Hay the garden or in our sheds. These butterflies (rspb-images.com) will be laying eggs when they appear again with the return of the warm weather, so we need them in good condition to boost numbers again next year. Crab apples, holly berries and rose hips will all be appreciated by birds and small mammals too, and here at Flatford Wildlife Garden we’ll also be leaving plenty of flower and grass seed heads in the borders for their winter supplies. But before the garden is completely given over to them for the colder months, we have the October half-term holidays to enjoy! From Monday, October 24 until Sunday, October 30, we will have family activities with an autumn theme available every day. Sowing tree seeds, investigating life among the leaf litter and nature trails are just some of the activities planned, so do bring your family along to Flatford Wildlife Garden to take part. There’s no need to book and you’ll receive a warm welcome. We also have lots of information to share about how to make gardens more wildlife friendly. Rain or shine, we’ll be there. For full details visit: www.rspb.org.uk/Flatford If you have some spare time available and would be interested in volunteering with us at the RSPB locally, do get in touch for information about the range of roles available. For more details contact Visitor Experience Officer Sharon Barker: 01206 391153 / sharon.barker@rspb.org.uk

KESGRAVE & NORTHGATE KARATE NEWS All classes have started back after the summer break. If, like me, you have spent the summer allowing your body to slip back to the texture of marshmallow, now is an excellent time to start exercising in time for excess eating at Christmas! It has been a relatively quiet time on the karate competition front. The sounds of the groans and bruises from the summer course are starting to fade, but a good time was had by all and the Northgate Ninjas (pictured) put in an excellent performance for the team. All in all good fun, hard work and lots of laughs being the feedback. Many thanks to all the club members who came to the Ark in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday, September 3 to help promote the clubs and showcase their talents. A big well done to all the Red Dragons who took their grading there too. Georgina Lawson and Oscar Hunt were both selected to try out
at the first round of selection for the U21 squad for the European Championships. Georgie currently sits top of her category having won all her fights and Oscar is in second place in his category having lost only one of his and has also recently received his England Midlands Squad Badge. Both are through to the final round of selections on October 16 in Barnsley. This is a huge achievement so a massive well done to both of them. They are both competing for the England Midlands Squad in the Lion’s Cup in Luxembourg on the weekend of September 10. Watch this space to find out how they got on. Thanks, as always, must go to our club sponsors I.S Electricals, M+C Diesel Services and Chris Clow for their continued support in helping to fund the club. A quick reminder about the next Japanese kata competition on Sunday, November 6 at the Garons Leisure Centre, Southend on Sea. For details of the various classes in and around Suffolk don’t forget to visit: www.northgate-karate.co.uk Alternatively sign up to our Facebook page for up-to-the-minute news and information about the club.
IPSWICH WANDERERS FC
IPSWICH RAVENS VOLLEYBALL With the start of autumn we are now turning our attention to the new indoor season when we will hold weekly playing and coaching sessions at St Alban’s School, Rushmere IP4 3NJ (near Ipswich Hospital) every Saturday from 2-4pm. If you are interested in giving them a try, whether as a complete beginner or an experienced player, now is the ideal time to join in with many of the players who started during the summer and have found out for themselves that volleyball is great fun, and really good exercise too. This season for experienced players we are aiming to build two teams to play in the monthly one-day tournaments at Maidenhall where we will pit ourselves against other volleyball clubs from across Suffolk and Norfolk, as well as starting a new ladies team to play full scale matches against other Suffolk ladies teams. Ipswich Ravens will welcome any new players, male or female, experienced or complete beginner, and any age from teenagers upwards. Qualified coaches run the sessions with a mixture of training drills and friendly games, making them highly enjoyable while helping participants to improve their skills. If you are interested in joining this growing sport, visit www.ipswichravens.org.uk or call/text 07508 351875.

November is going to be an important month for Wanderers. Our successful run in the prestigious FA Vase last season has given us a bye into the second round proper. As we don’t yet know who our opponents will be, all eyes at The Doucy will be on the draw to be made on Monday, October 24. The game itself is scheduled for Saturday, November 12 so I will write more about this in the next edition. Shane Wardley’s team has been taking shape and early Premier Division results have been mixed. Perhaps the local derby at home to Brantham Athletic, a rare Friday evening match under floodlights, will see us take the points. I urge all local football fans to join us and cheer Shane’s team on to victory. It is early days in the league and all is to play for. Home 1st Team fixtures in October are as follows: Friday, September 30: KO 7.45pm v Brantham Athletic Saturday, October 15: KO 3pm v Haverhill Rovers Saturday, October 29: KO 3pm v Kirkley & Pakefield The home game against Fakenham Town on Saturday, September 17 was the first to feature a Wanderers youth side. Mark Dixon’s Under 11s were shown around the stadium before the boys led the players onto the field for the start of the game. Four of the Under 11s were ball boys during the game. We wish them every success in their league and cup games this season. Details of all Wanderers news and matches will be found on the club website. Keith Lloyd 17
CHURCH NEWS
the
ARK church
There’s a lot of talk in churches about the power of forgiveness. It is one of the main tenets of Christianity and one that is, probably, the hardest to achieve. What exactly is forgiveness? It is to show mercy by pardoning someone who has wronged us and in so doing frees us from a burden that could cause us bitterness. Sometimes forgiving can seem unfair as if the person has ‘gotten away with it’. This doesn’t mean that we haven’t been hurt or that we’ve made something bad good. It is a choice we make not to dwell on the wrong done and because memories can’t be erased forgiveness may have to be done many times over. We must remember to forget! Join us on Sunday mornings at 11.30am (Café & Children’s Church at 10.30am), for Wednesday Bible Study at 8pm or Young People’s Night on alternate Fridays. The Ark Church, Wolsey House, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR. Our newsletter is available via free subscription. We can also be found at www.arkipswich.co.uk, Facebook/@arkofthelord, Twitter/@arkipswich or email: arkipswichuk@gmail.com
Deadlines! We all get them from time to time and they are not always easy to meet and can create pressure. A while back I worked for the media and had deadlines to meet every week. To do my job I had to persuade other people to write short articles and submit them to me and then I had to send them on to the editor – talk about pressure. Life is full of deadlines – to get to appointments, to catch buses… – so how can we best deal with them? Diaries and lists are useful but sometimes they can add to the pressure. To best deal with the situation I find that handing it all over to the Lord diminishes the pressure considerably and releases a creativity that leads answers and peace. The Boiler House meets every Sunday at Heath Primary School, Bell Lane, Kesgrave, at 10.30am.
