A WORD FROM THE EDITOR We live in interesting times, never knowing from one day to the next what’s going to happen. I’ve been fascinated by the House of Commons debates, not so much by the content of what’s being said, but by the sheer drama of it all. At times it’s calm and relatively reasoned, but when it’s not, it’s almost unbearable. Come what may, I do think it’s important to try to keep up with what’s happening, but I’d only just got my head around the ‘backstop’ when ‘proroguing’ became the lead news story. Perhaps it will be all over before the next edition is published! Meanwhile many of us have been getting children back to school or off to college. I was an emotional wreck on the morning I dropped Jack for his first day in Year 5. I don’t suppose I was the only mum who cried her way to work that day, but we quickly get back into the routine of it all and the summer holiday becomes a distant memory. In fact it’s shocking how quickly that happens! When Jack had to write about the best day of the summer, he wrote about the very last day when we had a couple of friends over to build a den and print initials on t-shirts using grated crayons. Admittedly we didn’t have a fancy holiday, but it seems he’d forgotten about all the lovely days out we had, our week in Ireland and all the clubs and camps he’d been to. Grating crayons won the day! Instructions available on request. Jack is a bit of a mad scientist and I don’t think his grandpa or his dad will object if I say it’s in his blood. The number of weird and wonderful experiments we’d done recently, from avocado ice-cream that tastes like chocolate (it didn’t!) to slime made using liquid detergent and cornflour. And my least favourite, instant ice-cream in a bag. Oh it might sound like a great idea, but when you end up with vanilla flavoured ice all over the sofa, the walls and the ceiling it loses its appeal, even if it’s quite nice to eat what’s left. Still, he’s a useful distraction from more serious issues so I think I’ll keep him! Perhaps I should ask him to invent a Brexit solution! If you’re looking for a distraction or an opportunity to get out and about, I think you’ll find it here, in addition to lots of essential drama-free (mostly) information about local developments.

POP-UP CHOIR TO CELEBRATE THE SONGS OF PAUL SIMON Paul Simon’s songwriting career started in 1957. It has continued for over six decades and covered many different styles. First as Simon and Garfunkel, and then as a solo artist, he has created some of our best-loved pop songs. Choirmaster Chris Rowbury is creating a pop-up choir to celebrate Paul Simon’s songs. This is a chance to build a brand new choir from scratch over six Tuesday evenings, then perform for one night only in Ipswich on Saturday 30 November. Everyone is welcome, whether you’ve only ever sung in the bath or are a regular choir member. Ideally suited to those who love to sing, but don’t want too much commitment. The pop-up choir starts at the Co-op Education Centre, 11 Fore Street, Ipswich IP4 1JW on Tuesday 22 October at 7.30pm. There is a large free car park accessible from Waterworks Street — use IP4 1JG for Sat Nav. This will lead to a full concert on Saturday 30 November at St Peter’s by the Waterfront, Ipswich. There will be a small charge of £35 for the whole series of workshops, final rehearsal and performance. Come and try out the first rehearsal free before paying for the six sessions. Joining the pop-up choir for the final performance will be Calling Birds. The group was set up in 2018 to support local charities with fundraising events. They feature a blend of guitar, violin, bass guitar, ukulele, flute, melodeon and harmony singing. Calling Birds will bring a unique flavour to their set of Paul Simon songs.
PLAY QUIZGO Sunday 27 October from 7.30pm Kesgrave Social Club, Edmonton Road IP5 1EE Maximum six per team, £2.50 each Licenced bar, food available in the interval www.quizgo.net

The six-week Paul Simon project will cover many different song styles, all arranged for voice only. From gospel to folk, from South Africa to Puerto Rica, from jazz to Brazilian samba. Chris teaches all the songs by ear in glorious harmony. There are no instruments or backing tracks, just voices. There are no auditions, no sheet music and no solo singing. Chris will help you raise the rafters with wonderful harmonies. His anarchic brand of humour will have you rolling in the aisles as you learn. For more information visit: www.chrisrowbury.com

Conductor Geoff Lavery is collaborating with Adam Cable from Martlesham Brass for a joyous Last Night of the Proms concert to celebrate the New Year on Sunday 5 January at Martlesham Church Centre. A spring concert featuring special guests Silbury Hill is planned for Saturday 28 March at Rushmere St Andrew. Gippeswyk Singers are super excited about another summer concert tour in June 2020, this time to Gloucestershire with a pre-tour concert on Sunday 21 June at St Mary’s Church in Felixstowe. This concert features a beautiful selection of exquisite a cappella choral music and will be the perfect way to showcase the delightful sound of this chamber choir to new audiences on tour. He will be finishing on a high note with our third performance at Snape Maltings Concert Hall in May 2021. Should the opportunity to lead this choir be of interest to you, come along to a concert or contact the choir secretary at: teresa.booth7@btinternet.com Raising money for charity is very important to Gippeswyk Singers and each year the choir members elect two local charities to support. FREE HEARING ASSESSMENTS ON OFFER IN IPSWICH The Hearing Care Centre is holding a free hearing care event to enable the residents of Ipswich to communicate with confidence. Hearing loss affects one in six people in the UK and it takes 10 years on average before those who have noticed a loss in their hearing choose to seek help. Research has also proven that other than a reduced quality and experience of life, hearing loss can also lead to cognitive decline resulting in conditions such as depression and dementia.
Suffolk Book League welcomes Mark Cocker to Ipswich Institute Reading Room (15 Tavern Street, Ipswich IP1 3AA) on Thursday 10 October.
The Hearing Care Centre, a family-run business with 26 centres across East Anglia, will hold two special Hearing Care Days at their clinic in Two Rivers Medical Centre, Ipswich on Tuesday 29 October and Friday 1 November from 9am until 5pm. Complimentary hearing assessments will be on offer at the event, as well as professional advice from The Hearing Care Centre’s award winning team to help you hear to your full potential.
Mark is a British author, naturalist, journalist and lecturer. His eight books have dealt with modern responses to the wild, whether found in landscape, human societies or in other species. A recent book, Our Place, is about humans’ effect on wildlife.
Karen Finch, founder and lead audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre, said: “Making the decision to book a hearing assessment really can be life-changing. Those who take action to treat their hearing loss report improvements in their overall quality of life and this has a positive impact on one’s relationships by improving their ability to communicate effectively.”
Doors open at 7pm and the event starts at 7.30pm; members £4, nonmembers £8. Cash on the door. Students free with ID. For more information visit: www.sbl.org.uk

TALES FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF BRITISH COMPUTING Simon Lavington, former Professor of Computer Science at Essex University, is to give a talk at the Ipswich Institute on the early days of British computing, when Ferranti Ltd led the way. The talk, Stardust: Tales from the Early Days of British Computing, will tell the story of the life and times of nine Ferranti computers launched into an unsuspecting market place between 1951 and 1957. This was a family of very early supercomputers, digital dinosaurs that lumbered from Manchester to Toronto, Amsterdam and Rome, consuming a diet of applications that ranged from atomic weapons to cotton spinning. Above all, this is the story of the men and women who struggled to tame the dinosaurs and put their primitive powers to useful work. Some of these pioneers are still alive, which has enabled the talk to be embellished with rare photos and intriguing personal anecdotes. We hope you can join us at Ipswich Institute Reading Room (15 Tavern Street, Ipswich IP1 3AA) at 7pm on Wednesday 9 October. Tickets (£5 / £4 for Ipswich Institute members) from the venue, 01473 253992 or by emailing: library@ipswichinstitute.org.uk

OUT & ABOUT KESGRAVE ALLOTMENT & LEISURE GARDENERS The ups and downs of being an allotmenteer! Sadly my first ever crop of sweetcorn was totally destroyed by rats! So disappointing after weeks and weeks of watching and waiting. Of all the pests at the allotment, I think rats are the cleverest, the most difficult to control and therefore the most annoying. However, yellow courgettes don’t seem to appeal to their tastes so mine just kept on growing throughout the summer and into September. I now have six jars of yellow courgette chutney! We had another lovely sunny day for our recent Allotment Open Day which is proving to be a popular and enjoyable annual event and illustrates the friendly community spirit at the site. The nights are closing in fast now and there’s a lot less sun so any remaining tomatoes on your vines are unlikely to ripen – pop them on a window sill or in a drawer to ripen. You can harvest early leeks now too and make sure you dig out main crop potatoes by the end of the month. Good luck with any pumpkins you planted for Halloween carving or for eating. It’s also possible to keep harvesting carrots, celeriac, lettuce and spinach.
IPSWICH RSPB LOCAL GROUP We have now embarked on our programme of indoor meetings. In October Kevin Sawford presents A Wildlife Photographer’s Year and in November Jeremy Mynott presents Birds in the Ancient World. Indoor meetings take place at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of the month in Rushmere St Andrews Church Hall, The Street, Rushmere IP5 1DH. You don’t need to be a member of the national organisation or the local group to attend. The attendance fee, which includes refreshments, is £5 for non-members and £2.50/£2.30 for members of the local group. Under-18s (who must be accompanied) are free. Walks, which are free, continue with Hollesley and Boyton Marsh, the River Deben at Melton, North Warren and Pipers Vale, Bourn Bridge and Christchurch Parks. Walks are expertly led and there is always someone willing to help those less experience with bird identification. Details of all walks including date, time, meeting place (we always use map references to avoid confusion) and suitable clothing can be found by contacting us in any of the ways set out below. 01394 809236 / www.rspb.org.uk/groups/ipswich Twitter: @IpswichRSPB / Facebook: RSPB Ipswich Local Group
In terms of sowing - over-winter onions, broad beans, hardy peas, garlic, spring cabbage and rhubarb crowns can all be put in. Other than that, general plot tidying is a good idea. I found it immensely satisfying to trim my scruffy strawberry plants with scissors! If you’d like to go on the waiting list for one of our plots contact our membership secretary, Angela Brown: 01473 612283 / membership@kesgrave-allotments.org.uk Sally Peckham
DEBEN FLOWER CLUB Our next meeting is on Tuesday 8 October in Kirton Church Hall at 7.30pm. Our demonstrator will be Lionel Clark and the title of his talk is Swan Song. You will always be assured of a warm welcome and time to chat and make new friends over a cup of coffee or tea after the demonstration. Visitors £5. Quiz Night Deben Flower Club is holding another of our very popular quiz nights on Saturday 12 October in Kirton Church Hall, 7pm for 7.30pm. Once again this will be a light-hearted evening and will include a ploughman’s supper. Why not join in the fun and bring along a team of six? If you don’t have six people for your team you may be asked to share a table with other club members. Tickets must be purchased in advance at £8 each including supper. Please bring your own drinks and glasses. For further information please contact: wa@sandlings.co.uk / 01394 411422

SPORT / SCHOOLS MARTLESHAM CARPET BOWLS
HEATH PRIMARY SCHOOL
The club had a foretaste of what it may be like in the first division in the Winter League after playing several of our future opponents during the summer when there is no promotion or relegation. Although we did quite well at home, we lost all our away matches. However, one of our teams of four reached the quarter-finals of a county-wide competition at Needham Market. The internal competitions begin with the men’s and ladies’ singles this month.
At Heath, we have long believed in the positive impact working and playing outdoors can have on wellbeing and learning. Over the past few years, we have invested a lot of energy and resources into developing our school site to support outdoor learning. With the help of our fantastic Parent and Friends Association (PFA), we have developed an amazing outdoor environment that has become an integral part of learning at Heath Primary School.
We are looking for new members; we meet at the Community Hall in Old Felixstowe Road on Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 1.30-4pm, and on Tuesday evenings from 7.30-10pm. In a session, costing £2 but free for the first visit, we usually play three rounds of friendly games, with a break for tea and biscuits after the second game. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played before as you will find everybody is willing to show you the ropes. It’s not physically challenging, and the club provides all the necessary equipment. If you are interested just turn up about 15 minutes before the start time and somebody will explain what we do. Alternatively you can ring our secretary, Ian Hunt, on 01473 611947, especially if you plan to come along on a Tuesday evening as the club enters a team in the Suffolk Carpet Bowls Association League and home matches are on Tuesday evenings. HEATHLANDS COMMUNITY PRE-SCHOOL We have welcomed back our pre-school children after the summer holidays and have enjoyed hearing about their summer adventures. We wish all the children who have left us to move onto primary school lots of good wishes for their exciting journey and hope they are settling well into their Reception classes. We also welcome the new children and their families who joined us in September. Our playroom has been given a makeover over the holidays and includes lots of natural resources and real life items to play with and explore. A stage has been put up in the garden and already we have seen a few impromptu performances! We are learning about the wonder of bees, looking at their lifecycle and how they make honey and exploring the equipment used by beekeepers. We are holding a Macmillan Coffee Morning for the children and their families on Friday 27 September and hope to raise money for this worthy cause while enjoying tea and cakes. Heathlands is a well-established, committee-run pre-school situated in the grounds of Broke Hall Community Primary School. We can offer funded places for eligible two year olds and for all other children the term after their third birthday. Breakfast and afterschool clubs are also available, although spaces are limited. We are pleased to accept applications for places for terms starting January 2020 and beyond. Please contact us on 01473 417517.

At present, we have our own Level 3 Forest School lead and our own Forest School area that is used by Early Years and KS1. We also have an outdoor classroom, a brand new bird viewing fence and three new mini beast hotels (thank you to Mr and Mrs Gaunt for these), our own wildlife pond with dipping platform, as well as our separate animal enclosures, which house six chickens, two rabbits and two ducks! It doesn’t just stop there either: we also have our own garden area, which includes an orchard, growing area, eco greenhouse, compost heap and workshop. On top of all of this, we also have an amazing Early Years outdoor area which includes a brand new bike track, new adventurous play equipment and a myriad of other wonderful engaging resources. Always looking forward, we have lots more exciting plans to further develop our outdoor environment, and this year we will be adding two new outdoor classrooms and starting the process of building our own sensory garden. CHURCH NEWS BIXLEY FARM CHURCH AT TOWER HALL We marked our second year as a church at the start of September with a church lunch and time of fellowship. It has been quite a journey, of growth in numbers and in depth, and we are very excited to be embarking on another year. We have plans for several new initiatives and these will be on our website as well as being advertised in this magazine. Our regular events such as the Sunday@4 service, home groups and Little Lambs, our toddler group, will continue to run as before and everyone is welcome to come along to any of our events. Our focus this term is on how the life, death and resurrection of Jesus in history changed everything. It’s not just an opinion or a lifestyle choice, it’s a new reality that has broken through and can be experienced by everyone. And at this time of great anxiety about the future of our country, let us focus on those things that unite us and remind each other of our shared life in Bixley Farm. Certainly as Christians we want to strengthen existing community links and forge new ones.
To advertise in this section, which appears in 18 magazines in areas across Suffolk and Essex, please contact a member of our sales team on 01473 400380
Next month’s issue will contain information about the last three months of 2019, including our plans to mark Christmas! You may have wanted to avoid the word for a little longer but it will be here soon. For further information/questions: W: www.mie.org/bixley, E: office@mie.org.uk T: 01473 270978
Change is inevitable! Whether we like it or not, things change. Life can be pretty unpredictable and not always how we would like it to be, but we also know that if we stay in the same place, doing the same things with the same people we will stagnate and become disillusioned. Our attitude to change must be one of enthusiasm and excitement about the possible outcomes that our futures hold. Now that is not a natural position for most of us as we like to have, at least, an idea of what’s to come. At the Ark we are going through a period of upheaval and change as we come into a new season with God. People moving and others retiring will mean that new faces and personalities come in and the dynamics of the church will be different. Things that have always been done a certain way may be altered and not everyone will be happy with the amended methods. It will be a hard time to go through, but eventually ‘the dust will settle’ and, hopefully, a rebirth will be seen. As we see in 2 Chronicles 20 (verse 12), when the enemies were coming against him King Jehosaphat prayed to God and said: “We don’t know what to do but our eyes are fixed on you”. Today we will praise God and put ourselves into His hands, there’s no better place to be. Join us at 11.30am on Sunday mornings (Adult Sunday School and Children’s Church, 10.30am) at The Ark Church, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR.
