A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
NEWS
This summer we celebrated my brother’s 50th birthday (the first opportunity we’ve had since he turned 50 last November). I was in charge of the playlist so my task was to compile music he has liked over the years into one handy iTunes list we could play on repeat for the afternoon and evening. The opening song had to be Neil Young’s Old Man with the line ‘Old man take a look at your life…’. John appreciated the sentiment! Bob Dylan also featured as well as The Cranberries, The Waterboys, The Stunning, The Bangles, The Pogues The Pretenders, The Undertones (who knew so many band names began with THE?), U2, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, Johnny Cash, Christy Moore and Hothouse Flowers. With a few additions (a whole lot more Leonard Cohen along with Regina Spektor, Snow Patrol and Nick Cave), I now have a playlist which brings me a lot of joy. I sing-along when I’m in the mood (and alone) and sometimes I find myself in tears (don’t ever play Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars when you’re feeling sad). I remember people and places from times gone by. I remember items of clothing (my Bananarama phase was a sight to behold!), bus journeys with my Walkman, cycling around Dublin to Lou Reed’s Perfect Day… Music is incredibly powerful and there are many studies into how it can improve brain health and function and make you smarter, happier and more productive at any age. It’s even used to help Alzheimer’s patients. Music therapy has been very successful at getting through to patients even when nothing else has. It seems that musical memories far outlast other kinds of memories and help alleviate depression, anxiety and agitation. Imelda May helped me though many long days when I was on maternity leave. Jack and I still dance like lunatics when Johnny Got a Boom Boom comes on the radio or TV. I hope you have access to the music you love, but if you know someone who doesn’t, perhaps an elderly friend or neighbour, wouldn’t it be lovely to make it possible. I’m currently working on a list for my parents. Ever heard of Ray Lynam?

clo FUNDRAISING CONCERT Earlier this year we celebrated 100 years of the Royal Navy. It is fitting therefore that the Armed Forces Charity, SSAFA, is marking this anniversary year with a concert given by the local Community Light Orchestra. Better known as the CLO, the popular orchestra, under the baton of Roger Jones, will be playing a varied programme including Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Suppé’s Poet and Peasant overture, a march by former musical director Barry Salmon and a medley based on Dicken’s A Tale of Two Cities by local composers and orchestra members Carolyn Goates and Chandra Grover. Guest soloist is Brendan Bennett, pictured, a young violinist who plays with Suffolk Youth Orchestra. The concert is at St John’s Church on Cauldwell Hall Road at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 17. A retiring collection will be in aid of SSAFA. Organisers of the charity will be available during the evening with more information about their work and how support through help and donations has helped the Forces’ families.
CONCERT FOR THE MAYOR’S CHARITY A concert is taking place at Cult Café on Ipswich Waterfront on Sunday, September 30 in aid of The Suffolk Law Centre, the charity supported by the Mayor of Ipswich, Jane Riley, in her year of office. The first band will take to the stage at 5pm for what will be five hours of folk, roots and acoustic rock music by some of the area’s most popular artistes. Already booked for the concert are Holly Johnston (a fine singer songwriter/guitarist with acclaimed recordings to her name), Elly Tree (a quirky acoustic pop band making their name on the festival scene), Exit 13 (a lively acoustic psychedelic folk band fronted by Steve Mann) and The Silburys (Silbury Hill, the duo now augmented to a four-piece with Martin Lindford on drums and Diz Deacon on bass). Further names are to be announced shortly to complete the line-up. Tickets for the concert cost £10 which includes a welcome drink and food and are on sale from Ipswich Borough Council Entertainments Box Office, Ipswich Tourist Information Centre and at: https://apps.ipswich.gov.uk/search The Mayor of Ipswich is delighted that the concert is supporting The Suffolk Law Centre, a charity to help local people to understand their legal rights, challenge disadvantage and inequality and to gain equal access to justice.

IPSWICH HEARING CENTRE MARKS 20th YEAR WITH SPECIAL EVENT Ten million people in the UK – one in six of us – have some degree of hearing loss. One local company is using a milestone in its history to try and help improve the hearing of those who are struggling. The Hearing Care Centre, based on Upper Brook Street in Ipswich, celebrates its 20th birthday this year, having been established by audiologist and entrepreneur Karen Finch back in 1998. To mark the occasion, Karen and her team have organised a free to attend open week at its flagship Ipswich practice between Monday 17 and Saturday 22 September. Patients with pre-booked appointments will be able to benefit from a complimentary appointment with an expert audiologist, who will conduct a full hearing assessment, offer advice and guidance based upon the results and make personalised recommendations on solutions that could help improve the patient’s hearing. Karen was keen to point out why people should consider coming along: “We offer an informal and relaxed atmosphere for our patients to enjoy their visit with us. Our audiologists are some of the best in the country and you can rest assured that you’ll be in safe hands.”

OUT & ABOUT OAK TREE LOW CARBON FARM AUTUMN OPEN DAY You may have seen us on BBC Countryfile and Escape to the Country last year so you’ll be pleased to know that our open day provides an ideal opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the farm and to learn about what we do. We’re all about reconnecting people with where and how their food is grown. People can get involved with the farm in various ways and can even help to grow the food themselves if they wish, but there’s no obligation to help!
Martlesham Brass Making music fun in East Anglia Everyone will be very welcome at our 22nd Birthday Concert on Saturday, September 29 at St Michael’s Church Centre, Martlesham Heath IP5 3PL starting at 7pm. Tickets are £3.50 (primary school age children free) from our website, by calling 07544 962205 or on the door.
All the food we grow is harvested each week and shared out in a weekly veg box. People can also have free-range eggs, soft fruit and cut flowers if they wish – depending on the season.
All our bands will be performing and the concert will include the Bandleaders’ Awards to the players who have improved the most over the year. Please come along and help us celebrate. There will be a raffle and refreshments (birthday cake!) available during the interval.
We grow food in an environmentally sustainable way, without the use of artificial chemicals. So, no herbicides, no pesticides – in fact we encourage wildlife at the farm and have plenty of bees, butterflies, we also have sky larks, a barn owl and much more.
We would love to hear from new players, young and old, with or without experience. Our aim is to encourage anyone who feels they would like to play in a brass band to come and have a go! If you would like to join us, or if you already play or have previously played a brass instrument and would like to come along and meet us, please contact us via the website or use the contact details below.
In practice we’re a cross between a veg box delivery scheme and a shared allotment. We offer local veg box delivery to our Armchair Members. As the name suggests, our Armchair Members can sit back and relax and have a veg box delivered to them each week without having to do any work! We set up Armchair Membership because we know that many people want to support us, but simply don’t have the time to come up to the farm and help us grow the food. For anyone who is interested in helping to grow the food, we operate a bit like a shared allotment. But whereas with a normal allotment you may need to put in up to 12 hours work a week in order to keep your allotment going – especially all the watering in dry weather – at Oak Tree Farm you only need to contribute up to two hours a week in summer and up to one hour a week in winter on average. Our scheme works by sharing the work out between our members and our paid growers which makes life easier. And, everyone knows where their food is grown and how it’s grown because many of them actually help to grow it themselves! If you’d like to volunteer at the farm for a few sessions, that’s an option too, and in return we will share surplus produce with you.

FREE MINDFULNESS COURSE FOR CARERS Mindfulness is a modern way to enhance life. It is being aware of your present moment thoughts, feelings and physical sensations without judgement and without trying to change it. In practise, mindfulness means staying focussed on one thing at a time. It can make us calmer and more centred, and improve our physical wellbeing. It can also help increase compassion for self and others. People who practise mindfulness often feel more in control of their choices and behaviour. The mindful way to well-being is life-changing. I was a teacher in a secondary school when I was introduced to mindfulness. I was so impressed by its results for myself and my pupil that I trained to teach adults and children and now run Rightnow Works. My clients have found they are calmer, content, sleeping and being able to ‘control’ head chatter.
We meet at the Co-op Education Centre where the pedestrian entrance is at 11 Fore Street, Ipswich IP4 1JW, and the car park entrance is in Waterworks Street IP4 1JG. Admission is £2 for society members and £2.50 for non-members, who are warmly welcomed. You can join the society at the meeting if you wish. Tickets are not required, just turn up and pay on the door.
If you are the carer of a family member, I am pleased to be able to offer you a free course on Tuesday afternoons in a beautiful barn in Otley. Carers who have previously been on a mindfulnesss course now meet with me monthly and enjoy the support of the group while practising. There is a taster session on Tuesday, September 11 at 1pm and the eight-week course starts the following week on Tuesday, September 18 at 1pm.

OUT & ABOUT ORWELL DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY We hope you will join us when our new season starts on Wednesday, September 5, when Rosalind Whyte will be giving a talk entitled 250 Years of the Royal Academy. In 2018, The Royal Academy of Arts celebrates its 250th anniversary. We will look at the position of artists in London before and after the formation of the academy in 1768 and some of the characters involved, including the first president, Sir Joshua Reynolds. Like any important institution, the academy has been embroiled in intrigue and controversy over the course if its history and no scandal or outrage will remain unexposed! We shall be holding our second informal study day at Rushmere Village Hall on Friday, September 7, when the subject will be Feisty Ladies – Women Travellers from Victorian Britain. Roger Mitchell, the speaker who made last year’s study day so memorable, will once again be entertaining us with a fascinating look at those intrepid women from days gone by. SPEAK EASY AT MARTLESHAM Is this weather going to last? Are we going to have rain soon? Isn’t it hot? Yes, we do like to talk about the weather. Then come and join us soon! We have an open evening designed especially for you to experience who we are and what we are about. Join us on Thursday, September 6 and enjoy a fun evening with free refreshments. OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS ORWELL FLOWER CLUB We closed our summer programme with a return visit from Ann Bell from Dunmow with a delightful demonstration entitled From Me To You. Her flowers were excellent and there were plenty of them. We start our autumn programme with a return visit from Jacque Aldous from Norwich on September 27 with her demonstration entitled That’s Entertainment Act 111. September is all about harvesting so dig up your onions and keep them somewhere light and dry, and dig up your potatoes but keep them somewhere dark and dry! They both need to be kept away from the frosts too. You may also have strawberries and raspberries to harvest still and, of course, apples and pears. Now is also the time to prune fruit trees and bushes. Lots of summer plants will now have died or be dying off so do have a good tidy up and put them into a compost bin if you have one. In terms of sowing – any earlier sown spring cabbage can be planted out now but should be protected with fleece. Oriental vegetables can also be sown – as can over-winter onions and garlic. Pumpkins should be shaping up nicely in readiness for eating or carving for Halloween – reminding us that autumn is just around the corner. Our Open Day this year is on Sunday, September 9 when allotmenteers get together and share food and stories – not purely gardening-related! It runs from noon-2pm so if you’re thinking about the possibility of taking on an allotment why not pop along and have a look round and meet some of us for a chat? This year in addition to our usual vote for the best plot competition we are also planning a best scarecrow competition. If you’re interested in taking on a plot please contact our membership secretary, Angela Brown: membership@kesgrave-allotments.org.uk / 01473 612283 Sally Peckham
RSPB IPSWICH LOCAL GROUP It is now almost two years since RSPB Ipswich Local Group moved our meetings to Rushmere Church Hall where we were made very welcome. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of the month between September and April and invariably have a very enjoyable evening. We have welcomed a wide range of speakers offering interesting illustrated talks primarily focused on birds, but also covering other wildlife, conservation and travel. All are welcome, whether RSPB members or not for a very reasonable entrance fee. Recently we have enjoyed talks on the wildlife of Trinidad, Tobago and Australia, the status of the stone curlew in Norfolk and Suffolk, and the breeding success of the Norwich peregrines. Coming up in the autumn we have talks on Swifts with Edward Jackson (September), Raptors with David Darrell-Lambert (October), House Martins with Martin Tickler (November) and Scotland with our group leader Tim Kenny. Throughout the year we organise guided wildlife walks in various locations including Ipswich parks, areas close to Ipswich and further afield. All these walks are free and there’s no need to book. They are publicised on our website and also in local papers. Walks coming up include trips to Minsmere, Hollesley Marsh, Melton riverside, Freston, Pipers Vale and Holywells, Christchurch and Bourne Parks. KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOL We hope you had a fantastic summer break and enjoyed the wonderful hot, sunny weather. Days at the beach, swimming, picnics, barbecues, ice creams – we hope you did all those things! Welcome back to all our children and we hope that our new children and their families settle in and enjoy their time with us. Kesgrave Playschool is a small playschool inspiring outdoor learning experiences. We are situated next to woodland and overlooking fields, a peaceful spot to enjoy. We make the most of our beautiful location – getting out into the woods as much as possible, bringing back leaves and cones to create our stunning displays and pictures to take home, and having fun on our swing at the big oak tree. We can sometimes see the tractors working in the field over the hedge. From our own outside area we can look out across the Millennium Field and see grown-ups taking their dogs for a walk and very occasionally a horse or two being ridden past! In our outside area we have space to ride around on bikes and trikes, tables to sit at for snack or for drawing, writing and counting activities. Plus we sow seeds in our planters and wait to see how many strawberries or runner beans we can pick, and see how tall our sunflowers can reach! We still have some spaces left for this, and future terms, and we welcome you to come and look round. Our dedicated team, and small numbers, ensure that your child will have excellent opportunities to learn and grow with us. Call us on 07746 907060 to arrange a visit or for more details visit: Facebook martleshamandkesgraveplayschools / www.mandkplayschools.co.uk

SPORT / CHURCH NEWS NORTHGATE & KESGRAVE KARATE CLUB Northgate and Associated Karate Clubs have had an increasingly successful year in kata as well as kumate. Jonathan Mottram, who coaches the England youth kata squad, led a session for the club on July 10 at Kesgrave Church Hall with Northgate Karate Club kata squad and some of them have been invited to train with him in Romford. Many of the team pictured have competed in Belgium and Poland this year as well as in competitions at Southend, Basildon, Walthamstow, Gillingham, Hornchurch, Gloucester and The Central England Karate Championships in Worcester on July 1. Bill Williams, who runs the karate club, is very proud of his students’ achievements this year and is striving to continue and improve their success even further. In kumate, Ruby Hunt won gold at the England Championships in April and became England National Champion 2018. She has competed at two WKF (World Karate Federation) Youth League competitions, one in Bulgaria where she came seventh and one in Croatia where she had five tough fights to finish fifth out of 45 top fighters from around the world. She won a bronze medal at the Austrian Open in Salzburg in June and a bronze medal at the Central England Karate Championships in Worcester in July. She also represented the Midland Region at the EKF Regional Championships in Leicester. A big thanks to her coaches. Some of the students who compete started with the Red Dragons section of the club when they were only five years old, but others joined later. If you are interested in joining our friendly club at any age, just for fun, to get fit or to compete in the future, please come along to one of our clubs or contact us via our website. We train at Heath Primary and Gorselands Primary during term time as well as at Northgate Sports Centre (all year round). For further details visit: www.northgate-karate.co.uk
BIXLEY FARM CHURCH AT TOWER HALL: SUNDAY@4 We hope you have enjoyed your summer, especially if you have been able to have a well-earned break. This summer has been amazing with so many sunny days reaching high temperatures that we have not been used to for so many years. On Sunday, September 3 we will be celebrating our first year as Bixley Farm Church by having an afternoon barbecue with games, followed by a short service at Tower Hall. We will be joined by some friends from our associate churches, St John’s and St Andrews’s (Mission Ipswich East) who have supported us to develop this church. You are welcome to join us even if you haven’t been before! There is no charge or need to book. Just turn up any time between 2 and 4pm for the fun which will be followed by our usual service between 4 and 5pm. Little Lambs, our parent and toddler group, had a great first term leading up to the summer holiday and are looking forward to beginning the autumn session which will resume on Friday, September 7. As before, these sessions run from 9.15-11am every Friday during term time at Tower Hall for a nominal £1 per family. All pre-school children are welcome, preferably accompanied by an adult! The sessions give a chance for children to play and socialise with other children in a nice safe environment. Both adults and children have mid-morning refreshments. For more details please contact, Emma Allinson: families@mie.org.uk In addition to our Sunday services and parent and toddler group we also have a regular midweek homegroup in Foxwood Crescent. This group meets for approximately ninety minutes to look at different aspects of the Bible, learn more about the nature of God and his son Jesus and how this may impact on our journey through life. It’s also a chance to be part of a supportive local group of individuals. This group will be meeting on alternate Wednesdays from September. If you would like further details please contact us using the details below. We also meet for a time of prayer at Tower Hall on the first Thursday of the month at 7pm and 8pm (two 45-minute sessions). If you have anything or anyone you wish to pray for we are there for you. You just need to turn up for either of these sessions or contact us using the details below. As always, everyone is welcome to join us each Sunday for our regular weekly service at Tower Hall from 4-5pm. There are opportunities to speak to clergy or other members of the church, time for personal prayer and Holy Communion is celebrated every other Sunday. Bixley Farm Church (CofE) was initiated by St John’s, Cauldwell Hall Road and St Andrew’s, Britannia Road (collectively called Mission Ipswich East). For further information go to www.mie.org/bixley or contact: office@mie.org.uk / 01473 270978 September has come around again and with the varying weather our minds start to get ready for a change in the seasons. We begin to think about what is ahead of us in the coming autumn with its falling leaves of shades of orange and brown, muted and sombre. Many people love this time of year while for others it reminds them of the coming winter with its cold, frosts and maybe even snow. I love the spring and summer seasons as I was born in March with its colour and flower, its blossom and bloom. It is wonderful that we are all so different in our preferences, showing that God loves individuality and uniqueness. Thank the Lord that we are given free choices in this life and that He didn’t create robots to do His bidding. But in that choice we have to be careful not to get it wrong. God wants us to love Him and to love others because we choose to not because we are forced to. Have a blessed September and remember you are loved. Join us on Sunday mornings at 11.30am (Café and Children’s Church 10.30am) at The Ark Church, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR. You can contact us via email at arkipswichuk@gmail.com and we can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter @arkipswich or online at www.arkipswich.co.uk where you will find up-to-date information on what’s happening at the Ark during each week.
