We’re back with another great weekend of jazz 2019 marks 100 years since the first tour of the UK by a jazz band and so 100 years later, the fourth Ipswich Jazz Festival will run from Friday 21st June to Sunday 23rd June 2019. We’ve a great line up of events with tickets at just £15 for our gigs because of a grant by Arts Council England. Thanks to funding by Ipswich Borough Council’s Area Committees, some gigs are free and there are concessionary tickets for Ipswich residents who are full time students or who receive certain benefits. Derek Nash and the Ipswich School Big Band Pre Festival Gig Sunday 16th June 8pm Top saxophonist Derek Nash leads a trio and the Ipswich School Big Band in a helter skelter ride through some of the great jazz tunes. This evening’s gig follows a workshop during the day by Derek with the school’s Big Band. Tickets: £18 available on the door. Jazz Workshops at Ipswich Town Hall Experimental Improvisation with Ian Buzer Saturday 22nd June 9.45am - 11.45am Suitable for all ages and musical abilities based on the teachings of John Stevens, a founder of the British free jazz movement from the early sixties. Activities will explore rhythm, sound colours, the use of silence, musical interaction, energy and structure. They are designed to be equally valuable to complete beginners as well as experienced improvisers. Singing with Polly Gibbons and accompanist Keith Monk Saturday 22nd June 12.00 - 2pm Learn breathing techniques and how to warm up; vocal styles and improvising; use of a microphone; how to lead your accompanist with confidence. This will be a friendly space for anyone who would like to have a go at singing with an accompanist, and play with new ideas. If you’d like to sing a solo piece, please bring a lead sheet. Jazz Saxophone Techniques with Alan Barnes Saturday 22nd June 2.30 - 4.30pm: Improve your saxophone playing, get a good sound and improve your technique. After that we’ll study how to become aware of and improve your grasp of time-feel, note choice, harmonic awareness and stylistic choices. Get everyone playing as much as possible – so it’s not all talk!

Jazz Workshop for Young Musicians Many Kinds of Blue Saturday 22 June 1pm - 4pm Suffolk County Music Service, Northgate Arts Centre, Sidegate Lane, Ipswich, IP4 3DF For young people aged 10 to 19 who live in, or attend school in Suffolk. Instrumentalists and vocalists with a skill level of at least grade 3 focusing on the 60th anniversary of Miles Davis’s classic album, Kind of Blue. Participants will play alongside top professional jazz musicians. Tutors are Arnie Somogyi (double bass), Neil Yates (trumpet), Chris Ingham (piano) and George Double (drums). An 8-piece London-based Brass Band who draw on the traditions of New Orleans. They have played at major festivals and jazz venues and are some of the most talented musicians in London. Live Music at St Peter’s by the Waterfront Mammal Hands Sunday 23rd June 8pm Doors open 7:30pm We’re closing the festival with something different. This trio have been hard at work touring internationally and recording a new album Shadow Work. The group will perform a sensational finish. Mammal Hands, Jordan Smart saxophone, Nick Smart piano, Jesse Barrett drummer and percussionist, has carved out a refreshingly original sound from an array of influences. Jazz Rhythm with Mark Sewell Saturday 22nd June 10am - 12pm For both instrument and rhythm section players of all abilities and anyone else interested in the art of the jazz rhythm section. Includes ‘comping’ rhythms and patterns, working together as a section and feel and groove in a variety of styles including swing, blues and funk.
Jazz Ensemble Playing and Improvisation for all levels Saturday 22nd June 12.15pm - 2.15pm Led by John Seeley the workshop will cover performing Jazz in an ensemble and improvisation with Blues, Latin and Jazz standards. Achieved by taking Jazz compositions, de-constructing them, improvising on them
Brazilian Jazz with Samba Azul Sunday 23rd June 10am - 12pm Led by Adam Osmianski and Joy Ellis of Samba Azul, the workshop will focus on the rhythms and melodies of Brazil. Participants will learn Brazilian rhythms on native percussion instruments, and explore traditional approaches to classic melodies and songs. All instrumentalists and vocalists are welcome.
Music Photography: Jazz in Black and White Sunday 23rd June 12.15pm - 2.15pm Specialist photographer John Watson again leads a workshop which is aimed at all levels. This year, concentrates on dramatic black and white images, and photographing a live band. Cameras should be set at least 1600 ISO and able to turn off any built-in flash.

Becki Biggins’ Big Family Show Saturday 22nd June 3pm - 4pm Award-winning jazz singer and educator Becki Biggins brings her show to this year’s festival. An interactive workshop, aimed at ages 4 - 12 and their grown-ups. Children must have an adult parent or guardian with them. Followed by a short performance by Cliff Lane Primary School orchestra. Samba Azul Sunday 23rd June 2.30pm - 4.30pm Brazilian jazz band Samba Azul is a rhythm-centric, jazz outfit that brings the spirit of Brazil to Ipswich. Samba Azul highlights many of the rich musical landscapes found throughout Brazil from Samba to Forró, Candomble, Maracatu and Tropicália. The band will perform some of their favourite Brazilian classics as well as material from their new album.
