CHERRY KITCHEN MAKEOVERS EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE PERFECT KITCHEN I established Cherry Kitchen Makeovers because not everyone wants or can afford a whole new kitchen. Also quite honestly there’s no need for the extra hassle and expense a lot of the time. I knew that with a great range of top quality products, hard work and good customer service we would be a success. I also feel that more and more people like to use local family run businesses as they get a more personal service. Of course I like working with my son Ben as it’s hard to get him round for Sunday dinner nowadays. I even managed to get my other son, Ross, back from university last summer to help paint the new showroom! Our doors are fitted to your original kitchen carcass with minimum hassle, a solution which costs approximately half the price of a full refit. In certain kitchens there is only so much that can be done with the layout and it simply needs an update. We can suggest plenty of ways to create a completely new look while still making the best use of the available space. If you want to breathe new life into your old kitchen call us today on 01206 615858/932466 or visit www.cherry-kitchens.co.uk to request a free brochure.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Jack wanted to hold a roadside cake sale to raise money for charity, but couldn’t decide who to donate the money to. Old people were his first choice so I suggested Age UK Suffolk. Then he decided it should go to people who don’t have a place to live so we decided on Shelter. Next it was to help people with cancer so we added Cancer Research UK to the list. We sat there for an hour or so with our little picnic table, offering free squash with every purchase and the option to buy a copy of Jack’s Little Blue Book of Bits and Bones, drawings of some of the many odd bits Jack has picked up on scavenger hunts in the woods and compiled into a book with grandpa’s help. My son definitely has a generous soul, but in this instance I think book sales was his main objective. He did sell three copies and we raised £4 for each of our chosen charities, so not a bad result overall. The best part was meeting people. Most of our customers were walking past but one lovely couple stopped in their car to see what we were up to and purchased four buns and a copy of the book. Turns out they have just moved into the house three doors up and this was their first opportunity, and ours, to meet. I dread to think how long it would have taken otherwise. Everyone seems so busy these days, racing from one appointment to another. I feel like I’m juggling all the time and rarely feel satisfied that I’ve done any one thing as well as I’d have liked. Time with extended family and neighbours, to get involved in community events or to volunteer in any capacity, seems impossible, but thank goodness so many people manage to conquer this balancing act. Those who do are the ones who collect for charity, who volunteer at schools and libraries, who organise fundraising events, who take part in all sorts of fundraising activities, who share themselves with others who may not be able to get out and about so easily. Where would we be without these angels? My paltry £12 split three ways is no more than a token effort which I’m unlikely to repeat in a hurry, but in the coming months we will have several opportunities to support the efforts of others dedicated to raising money for one cause or another. So don’t drive by. Stick your hand in your pocket and throw a few coins in the pot, and if you’re not in a hurry take a moment to chat.

NEWS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOSPICE’S NEW RETAIL CENTRE St Elizabeth Hospice is opening a brand new retail centre in Martlesham and they are looking to recruit a team of volunteers to help when it opens. The hospice opened its first retail centre in Holywells Road 18 months ago and it has proved so successful, the local charity has decided to open another one in Martlesham. The retail centre is expected to be very popular and will require a number of volunteers to help in a variety of roles. Patrick Otter, St Elizabeth Hospice’s retail area manager, said: “Following the opening of our hugely popular retail centre in town last year we have been eager to open another one in a community area for a while and Martlesham is an ideal location for our second retail centre. All our shops get very busy and we expect this new retail centre to have a constant flow of customers, so we need a number of capable volunteers to assist in the store. If you love vinyl, can spot an antique or love to organise and want to help your local hospice, we’d love to hear from you. Volunteer roles will include serving customers, using the till, merchandising and stock preparation for new and donated goods, van drivers, creating appealing displays and admin co-ordinators. The store will open in late autumn and will sell a range of good quality second-hand items including furniture, clothes, accessories, homeware, DVDs, vinyl, books and more. To apply to volunteer in the new retail centre or for more information, please contact volunteer@stelizabethhospice.org.uk / 01473 707939 or visit: www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/volunteer

This year’s delivery will take place on the morning of Tuesday, December 13. The students are always accompanied by staff. We are trying to update our list of recipients. If you know of anyone who would be happy to receive a parcel and who hasn’t done so in the past, please let us know by contacting; 01473 624855 / office@kesgrave.suffolk.sch.uk

You can change your nominated pharmacy as required. This could be especially helpful if you would like to collect your medication from a pharmacy near your place of work or while visiting another part of the country (England only at present). Please check with them that they accept electronic prescriptions and then tell the surgery the name and address of your nominated pharmacy. Don’t forget to change back following any temporary trips away. For those who currently have repeat prescriptions collected by a local pharmacy, you wouldn’t notice any difference, but by requesting electronic delivery the process will be more efficient and avoid paper prescriptions getting lost. You can continue to collect paper prescriptions yourself if you prefer and the surgery will continue to dispense directly to eligible patients (living more than three miles away), so those patients don’t need to nominate a pharmacy unless they wish to do so.

NEWS MESSAGE FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLORS: SEPTEMBER 2016 Government devolution consultation closes but Suffolk residents can still give their views Over the last seven weeks people across Norfolk and Suffolk have been offering their views and feedback on a proposed devolution deal and associated governance arrangements for the two counties. The consultation closed at the end of the day on Tuesday, August 23. Devolution is about transferring certain decision-making powers and funding down from central government to a local area. It means that decisions are taken close to where they have an effect. The majority of councils across Norfolk and all in Suffolk, along with the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, supported the deal and agreed to ask the public for their views. Key elements of proposed Norfolk/Suffolk deal are: • £25m funding each year for the next 30 years (£750m) to support economic growth, development of local infrastructure and jobs (this will increase the local economy to £43bn and create 95,000 jobs by 2026) • £130m investment over five years to support the building of new homes across Norfolk and Suffolk • Over the lifetime of the deal around 200,000 homes could be delivered • Control of a £225m transport budget for the next four years • Control of an existing c£20m annual adult skills fund to ensure the training offer matches the needs of local businesses and the local labour market • Control of an existing c£2m annual Apprenticeship Grant for employers As part of the consultation, people have been asked for their views on more decisions being taken locally, rather than at central government and whether they support the creation of a combined authority chaired by a directly elected Mayor for the two counties.
Over 2,500 submissions were made as part of the consultation by people completing the online survey. Ipsos-Mori have also been carrying out more than 6,000 phone surveys across the two counties to ensure decision makers have a representative sample of views. Suffolk County Council plans to continue its own consultation until October when councillors will be asked to give the proposals final approval. The consultation will soon go live on: www.suffolk.gov.uk New pilot scheme ‘Adopt a Post Office’ launched in Suffolk Suffolk Trading Standards and Suffolk Police have been working with local post offices to trial the new ‘Adopt a Post Office’ scheme to share information about scams directly with communities. Launched recently at the One Stop Stores in Stowmarket and at the post office on Penzance Road in Kesgrave, Trading Standards and local neighborhood policing teams will be able to work with sub-postmasters and staff to highlight various types of crimes that could affect their customers such as mail scams, internet dating scams and rogue doorstep traders. Officers will not be permanently based within the branches, but through their relationship with the post office, the teams can be present at periods of high footfall enabling them to interact with more residents. With this new pilot, when post office staff suspect someone is being scammed, they will contact specialist officers from Trading Standards and Suffolk Police who will then offer advice and support. Regards and best wishes, County Councillors Christopher Hudson and Robert Whiting

success by organising another event, Kesgrave Big Lunch Fun Day, to take place on Saturday, June 10, 2017.
Requirements for Grants Voluntary organisations or community groups wishing to be considered for a grant should write to the town council and include the following information:
We would like to involve local clubs and societies to let the people of Kesgrave know that you exist and what you do. We will accommodate stalls and static displays and are happy to involve local businesses and essential services. It you want to promote a local charity or a church, or just take up a stand to exhibit your wares, please let us know your thoughts.
• The specific amount of the grant • What the funding is for • Breakdown of costs and any funds already raised • How the project will benefit Kesgrave and its residents • Latest set of accounts/full financial statement
This year we had adult and children races, football, karate, volleyball, archery and keep fit all in one place for people to have a go. The participating clubs benefited by increasing their membership and visibility. We also hosted a wide range of social activities for people to observe, listen, dance to or generally have a go, all mutually beneficial.
The grant is not available to fund individuals, commercial or statutory organisations.
If you are interested in being involved in this event or would like to know more about how to promote your sport, club or association to the residents of Kesgrave in 2017, please contact Kesgrave Town Council: enquiry@kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk
In making decisions they will observe the following guidelines: • Approvals will depend on sufficient funds being available within the overall grants budget • If the grants budget has been expended the town council will be empowered to authorise virements from savings elsewhere in the budget • The latest set of accounts or a full financial statement will be required with each application/s • Kesgrave organisations will receive preference for grants • Applications from county or national organisations will be considered if it can be shown that their activities provide positive benefits for Kesgrave people. Amounts of grants in such case will be limited. Proposed new Co-operative Store on Hartree Way Planning permission to build a new East of England Co-operative Society Food Store at Hartree Way, Kesgrave was granted consent in August 2015 with pre-commencement conditions. The Co-op has not yet applied to discharge these conditions. However the Co-op/applicant does have three years to commence the development within the timeframe stipulated on the planning permission. The town council is aware that an initial site inspection has been carried out by the Local Planning Authority’s building control team. Currently there is no date for construction works to commence. However, the Co-op has said that it will keep the town council and residents updated on its plans. Calling all clubs, societies, charities, sports groups and volunteers Kesgrave Family Fun Weekend, held to celebrate HM the Queen’s 90th birthday, was considered a successful venture. OUT & ABOUT WHAT DOES BREXIT MEAN FOR THE COUNTRY MARKET?
GRESSLAND COURT CHRISTMAS FAYRE
Self-sufficiency is a good thing, I think most people will agree. Gardening, baking and crafting might be a tiny contribution to the economic health of the nation, but so is a cross on a voting slip and how powerful is that? Growing your own fruit and vegetables, cooking and baking your own meals and treats, making useful and decorative bags, hats, gloves, bowls, cards, beaded jewellery, honey and preserves is very rewarding when you have the time and space to do it.
Gressland Court on Mead Drive, off Roper Drive, Kesgrave IP5 2HJ, will be holding their Christmas Fayre on Saturday, November 26, 10am-noon. There will be tombola, a raffle, a cake stall and lots more including Christmas gifts made by the owners of Gressland Court.
Not everyone has those luxuries. Families and friends, work, travel and many other busynesses take priority, yet you can still enjoy locally produced staples and treats and share the feel-good factor of saving food-miles and supporting skills in your neighbourhood by using your country market.
Come along and join us and enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and a slice of cake. We look forward to seeing you on the day.
We are an enormously resourceful community and you can choose freshly picked seasonal fruit and garden produce, eat a home-baked meal, take pleasure in using an original handmade bag, a wooden bowl turned from a locally grown tree, a portrait of a favourite pet or car, all made by a local artisan.
SUNDAY AFTERNOON CONCERTS AT ST ANDREW’S, RUSHMERE The new series of Sunday Afternoon Concerts at St Andrew’s Church, The Street, Rushmere St Andrew gets under way on October 2 with an event postponed from the spring series. Soprano Yula Andrews, baritone Alan Loader and pianist Paul Dawson will be giving a Songs from the Shows concert featuring music by Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Frederick Loewe and Kurt Weill. There is more vocal music, albeit of a different kind, on October 9 when mezzo-soprano Shirley Smith and her accompanist Jonathan Rutherford perform a programme of English songs and piano music. On October 16 there is change of performer to that originally advertised, as Kim Haan & Friends have had to be postponed until next spring. Instead, Colchester’s Borough Organist Ian Ray will be crossing the border to give a recital on Rushmere’s fine pipe organ. On October 23 we welcome the highly-acclaimed young folk duo Shorelark, comprising singer-songwriter and guitarist Georgia Morgan Turner and multiinstrumentalist Finn Collinson, to entertain us with a mixture of traditional and newly-composed songs and tunes, including material from their debut EP Longwayes for Six. The series concludes on October 30 with a long-awaited return visit to Rushmere of the wind ensemble Nightingale, who will perform a sparkling selection of music from Beethoven to Gershwin. Each concert starts at 3pm and lasts approximately an hour. Admission costs £6 (or £24 for the whole series – a saving of 20%), including delicious homemade refreshments. Under 18s are admitted free of charge. For full programme details visit: www.rushmerestandrews.wordpress.com/concerts

Celebrate our self-sufficiency and get a friendly welcome at our weekly Tuesday morning market at Martlesham Heath Pavilion, 9.15-11.15am, and choose your favourites from a range of locally baked comestibles and unique hand-made crafts. We’re also at the Kesgrave Scout Hut, on the third Saturday of each month, 9-11.30am. You’ll also find Martlesham Heath Country Market on Facebook. We need more cooks. Our members were fortunate to be able to take part in workshops run by our special guest Brett Baker during the day of the concert. Our aim is to encourage anyone who feels they would like to play in a brass band to come and have a go! If you would like to join us, or if you already play or have previously played a brass instrument and would like to come along and meet us, please contact us via the website or use the contact details below. OUT & ABOUT IPSWICH COUNTRY MARKET British, delicious and local to you, from your local country market As we move into October and mark the end of British Summer Time we would like to be able to tell you about the amazing range of autumn fruits and vegetables that our growers have on offer, but it has been a difficult growing season, with so little rain, and added to that one of our producers’ chickens decided to nibble the pumpkin patch. Despite these setbacks we always have a wide variety of genuinely homebaked goods and preserves, home-produced craft items, plus home-grown seasonal vegetables, fruit, flowers and plants. Cakes and preserve recipes have often been passed down through the generations, so you won’t find anything like them in your local supermarket. Our products do not contain any added preservatives, and we always have on offer a range of increasingly popular gluten free items. Our producers are of all ages and from all walks of life, but they are all passionate about offering the best quality local produce. All products sold at Ipswich Country Market are made by the members themselves in their own kitchens, grown in their own gardens or crafted in their own homes. With half term this month, why not bring the younger members of your family along for a treat? You will find a warm welcome and a real community atmosphere. We are open on Thursday mornings from 10.15-11.30am at Rushmere Village Hall on Humber Doucy Lane. We have plenty of free parking and home baked refreshments with a free tea or coffee on your first visit. Where else could you have a cheese scone or sample a slice of cake with a drink for around a pound? On the first Thursday of the month we sell bacon rolls for only £1! Find out more on our Facebook page ’Ipswich Country Market’ or at: www.ipswichcountrymarket.co.uk

MARTLESHAM HEATH CENTENARY EVENT (MH100), JULY 8/9 2017 EXCITING SEASON AHEAD FOR THE GIPPESWYK SINGERS Gippeswyk Singers, conducted by Geoff Lavery, have returned from a successful concert tour to Yorkshire this summer performing in Harrogate and York including the memorable experience of singing in the glorious acoustic of Fountains Abbey on a beautiful summer day.
We’re very encouraged by the amount of support so far. Sponsorship grows, we’ve obtained charitable status, support and interest from local schools, The University of Suffolk as well as local businesses, groups and societies, parish, district and county councils. Our aim is to provide a real legacy from the event and we’ve identified local charities that will benefit from any surpluses generated, as well as The Story of Martlesham Heath 1917 – 2017.
Back home in Ipswich, rehearsals are now in full swing for what will be a very popular New Year concert in January with Martlesham Brass, hitting all the right notes for the festive season.
The fact that we’re encouraging local schools to participate, and that the event will be truly community based, enables us to apply for Lottery funding to match monies already pledged.
Gippeswyk Singers are excited to be performing their Snape Maltings Concert Hall debut in May, singing The Dream of Gerontius which is considered to be Elgar’s finest choral work. The singers will be joined by Beccles Choral Society and Lambeth Orchestra for this special event conducted by Geoff Lavery, the highly esteemed musical director of both choirs. Tickets are already on sale and available from choir members. The choir is also seeking sponsorship for this performance from individuals and businesses interested in supporting local community arts.
Early planning for the weekend has already started, however we’re now looking to build sub-committees to focus on certain areas such as:
Gippeswyk Singers are a highly accomplished chamber choir and perform regularly in Suffolk, leaving audiences delighted with the beauty and joy of their music, as well as supporting local charities with their concerts. For more information please visit: www.gippeswyksingers.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT KESGRAVE CO-OP WOMEN’S GUILD We all returned on Tuesday, September 6, refreshed from our summer break and looking forward to a packed programme up until Christmas. Our speaker was Carole Wheatley who talked about her life as a dancer, actor and dance teacher. She took us back to her first ballet school at a very young age in London, on through her years of trying to teach young ladies who were often not at all suited to ballet. Her love of national dancing led her to learn all types of dance including Russian, Croatian and many more. She also enjoys English folk and Morris dancing. Carole’s very humorous tales of her and her pupils’ performances were highly entertaining. Several of our members are setting sail from Ipswich to Tilbury on the Waverley paddle steamer in October and we have confirmed our trip to Taverham on November 22 for some Christmas shopping at the many stores within the nursery centre. Next meetings Tuesday, October 18: Our Harvest Supper, a social meeting with refreshments Tuesday, November 1: Colin Hooper will be demonstrating and talking about the intricacies of paper sculpture Tuesday, November 15: Dave Steward will talk about the history of one of our all time favourite television programmes, Dad’s Army The guild now has a website kindly hosted by One Suffolk: www.kesgravecoopwomensguild.onesuffolk.net Visitors are very welcome to join us for an evening and if you would like to find out more please contact our chairman, Gloria Everett: 01473 614991
EAST SUFFOLK NATIONAL TRUST ASSOCIATION If you are a member of, or a volunteer for, the National Trust, we invite you to get more out of your membership by joining our association where a warm welcome awaits you. We meet at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre at 7.15pm. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, October 18 when Dr Simon Bradley, architectural historian and editor of the Pevsner guides, will be exploring the life and works of Sir Nikolaus Pevsner. Between 1951 and 1974 Sir Nikolaus produced a series of guides detailing, by county, the buildings of architectural importance. The guides are lively and informative and Dr Bradley will be certain to feature many of the Suffolk entries. On November 15 Pip Wright will be bringing to life the amazing story of John Heigham Steggall, the Suffolk Gypsy, who was born in Creeting St Mary 200 years ago. Visitors (even if not National Trust members) are welcome; the entrance fee is £2. National Trust members/volunteers can join us at half normal price for the rest of 2016 – £4 per year or £6 per couple at the same address. We publish three newsletters a year for members and enjoy interesting day outings and other events. KESGRAVE WI We welcomed seven visitors to our September meeting, all interested in joining the Women’s Institute. As usual we had a very busy and varied meeting. We started the evening with a talk by Janet Dann from Felixstowe entitled Suffolk Chapter and Verse. Janet enthralled us with readings and background information regarding her arrival in Suffolk, and hence how her love for and interest in Suffolk literature developed. She enlightened us about various Suffolk authors, some famous and others not so, reading some of their work along with other authors’ views on Suffolk folk. After coffee and the judging of our monthly competition we continued with business. Anne Larter announced plans for a trip to Norwich theatre in January to see the pantomime along with final details of our mid-September trip to Brick Lane Old Time Music Hall, East London. Various events being organised by the county office were announced, all of which are open to WI members. We have been invited to join Bucklesham WI for their September meeting when their speaker is a representative from Adnams Brewery – with the promise of a few samples. With Christmas soon to be on the horizon Delcie Corbett has arranged our annual Christmas lunch at Rushmere Golf Club for early December. Continuing on the theme of getting prepared for Christmas, the speakers for our Thursday, October 6 meeting will be two of our own members demonstrating a variety of easily made home-made sweets ready for Christmas. OUT & ABOUT U3A IN EAST SUFFOLK We knew we would have a good turn out for our open day on September 2, but on asking several visitors and prospective members where they heard about us and the day we realise just how widely local free magazines are being read. On the day group leaders and the committee were kept busy with registrations and questions from old and new members and lists for places or new groups were quickly established. We wish everyone involved an interesting and fun academic year with U3A in East Suffolk. We hope you already have the date of Monday, October 3 in your diaries when the talk entitled Gone for a Soldier will take place at Woodbridge Community Hall, Station Road, Woodbridge IP12 4AU at 2.30pm. It’s the story of the Salvation Army given by Geoff Hales. Refreshments will follow the talk. There is no talk planned for November. Kesgrave hosts its second talk this season on Monday, October 31 at 2pm at Kesgrave Community Centre. The number 66 bus from Ipswich and Martlesham passes the centre approximately every 20 minutes. Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits will involve a miscellany of words and music celebrating the bard in voice and verse. Refreshments follow the meeting. All members are welcome and visitors and prospective members are invited to come to one talk before enrolling as a full member. If it is to be your first visit please make yourself known and give your details to the campus co-ordinator so that we know how you heard of U3A and they can welcome you accordingly. BEFORE
September has seen the usual swirl of preparations for the museum’s annual Autumn Vintage and Classic Day to be held on Sunday, October 9. This year’s show has been merged with elements of the currently discontinued spring and summer events to produce a larger and more diverse range of attractions. In addition to the usual array of beautifully restored vehicles, the show will feature an exhibition of scale models including aircraft and a wonderful display of model boats, which featured in last year’s spring show and proved to be a huge attraction. Other features this year include favourites like Pete Route’s spectacular display of classic speedway bikes and racing leathers and, new to the show, a Dukes of Hazzard Dodge Charger, which is sure to be a significant attraction. Also new for this year, a working scale locomotive, operated by the Ipswich Model Engineering Society, will offer steam train rides for the kids. Alongside the ever popular stationary engines, which will be running throughout the day, a scale tank battle area will feature a number of impressive 16th scale military tanks, owned and operated by museum members relishing the joys of a second childhood. It is hoped this new feature will develop as an attraction in the coming years. The organisers are keeping their fingers crossed for the same good weather that has graced the event in previous years, as participation of a number of the attractions is, quite understandably, subject to conditions on the day. The show is open from 10am to 4pm with admission priced at £3.50 for adults, £1.50 for retirees, 50p for Under 16s and pre-school age free. OUT & ABOUT THE ROTARY CLUB OF WOODBRIDGE
Rotarians Robin Pivett & David Houchell with Adam & Jeremy
The Rotary Club of Woodbridge held their annual charity cycle ride on Sunday, September 4. There were two routes – the Metfield 100k meander and the Deben 50k. Fifty-three riders of all ages took part. While this is a family community event with no time stipulations, the first rider home from the 50k took approximately two hours and the first rider home from the 100k took three hours and 24 minutes.
The Mayor of Woodbridge, Councillor Stephen Attwood started the 100k ride and his consort started the 50k ride. The moderate to high winds played their part, but didn’t detract from the enjoyment that all riders experienced, raising more then £600 towards charities supported by Rotary. This cycle ride differs to many others as it encompasses a ferry crossing between Bawdsey and Felixstowe. The event was supported once again by the management of the Pavillion Cafe on Kingston Field and the ferry master at Bawdsey. Event organisers David Houchell and Robin Pivett from Woodbridge Rotary Club can add another successful event, bringing an increasing number of cyclists each year. Our thanks goes to Pete Whelan from Plomsgate Cycle Club for his help and support together with Adam Thorpe, a new friend of Rotary, and Jeremy from the Pavillion Cafe who also gave a generous donation to the event.
MARTLESHAM HISTORY SOCIETY Mark Mitchell will present a talk entitled Magna Carta and the Bigods at our next meeting on Monday, October 17. Meetings are held at Martlesham Heath Pavilion IP5 3UY and start at 7.30pm. The admission fee is £2.50 and meetings are open to all. Kim Quinton

IPSWICH AND DISTRICT SOROPTIMIST CLUB So what is the verdict? As we have to get copy to the editor by the 10th of each month this report is being written in the middle of Helen’s trial. Of course by the time the magazine lands on doormats everyone will know! Views about the Rob/Helen saga in The Archers may vary. Domestic violence is a key issue for Soroptimists and we have liked the clear focus on domination as the root of abuse. As it happens we have recently funded copies of Living with the Dominator, a handbook for the Freedom Programme, a widely used course to help victims of abuse understand what has been happening to them and regain their confidence and self belief. Another related issue has cropped up since one of our members heard of a poster and leaflets produced in Norfolk They explain in the languages of local migrant workers the support available to victims of domestic abuse. We are investigating if there is an equivalent in Suffolk and, if not, whether the Norfolk materials could be adopted here. We realised that we had not thought of the women in these particular communities; it’s important for them to know that they have rights here and to have easy access to information about how to get help if necessary. Our meeting on October 12 could be a bit more cheerful. After a supper of scampi and chips we shall hear about the progress of our regional project among children in Africa – a lot of good news and smiling faces. We are always pleased to welcome anyone who would like to come and hear a speaker, join in a discussion or share a meal with us. For more details and directions please call Jackie: 01473 659314

MARTLESHAM HEATH AVIATION SOCIETY Our meeting on Friday, September 2 was not as planned. Our intended speaker, Nik Coleman, was scheduled to present an illustrated talk about the making of the TV series Plane Resurrection. This talk will now be given at a later date and we apologise for something entirely out of our control. Mr Tony Tottle stepped in at the last minute and we are very grateful to him. Tony, who was accompanied by his wife Penny, gave a most humorous account of his career in the RAF teaching aviation metallurgy to RAF personnel at Cranwell. The title of his talk was Ramblings of an Old Crab! Apparently ‘crab’ was at one time RAF slang for a Royal Navy man although there seem to be other explanations. Tony was a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF before resigning to join the Royal Navy, subsequently attached to the Fleet Air Arm. He comes from a family closely associated with flying even before the RAF was formed. His great grandfather was an instrutor at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough in the Edwardian era and his uncle and father were both in the RAF. It was a most humorous and witty talk and we are grateful to Tony for filling the slot. The theme of our scheduled talk was aircraft resurrection and after the break we were shown an extraordinary film about restoring a Hurricane found in the grounds of Bangalore University. The remains of the Hurricane were shipped back to England and some parts of it were usable in the reconstruction. It was an early version of this famous type and fought in the Battle of Britain. The film showed the skill and craftsmanship that succeeded in restoring the aircraft to flying condition. Our talk next month is rather special. Mr Bernard O’Connor, author of the book, will present an illustrated talk entitled Churchill’s Most Secret Sirfield – RAF Tempsford. Many secret agents were flown from here to destinations in occupied Europe. Non-members are welcome for a payment of just £4 at the community hall on Felixstowe Road. Meetings start at 7.30pm with a tea/coffee break.
We look forward to meeting you.
MARTLESHAM LADIES CLUB We have two meetings planned for October. We are having our Harvest Supper on October 13 and on October 27 Linda Sexton will tell us about Miss Grimwade and the Girls of Hope House. On November 10 we are doing pottery painting (in time for Christmas). This was very popular last year and we all discovered we had hidden artistic talents! All ladies are very welcome to join our friendly club for an evening out with a difference. Meetings are held on alternate Thursday evenings at 7.15pm in the Richards Room. To find out more contact Doreen Boar: 01473 622768
ORWELL DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY We had our first meeting of the 2016-17 season on a hot and humid Wednesday, September 7. The guest lecturer was Toby Faber who recounted the history of his renowned family publishing firm Faber & Faber through its illustrations, covers and designs. We heard a veritable who’s who of modern British literature and poetry all with amazing book covers designed by talented artists. TS Eliot, WH Auden, Ezra Pound, William Golding, Ted Hughes and PD James all published their work with Faber & Faber. Toby’s pride in his family firm was clear to see. A great start to our new season. Why not come along and enjoy some good company and an interesting talk? We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months and we also organise interesting day visits. The wonderfully illustrated lectures are presented by national and international lecturers and start at 2.15pm (2pm arrival is advised). Guests and non-members are welcome, provided we have available space. A £6 donation is asked.

DR DAN POULTER, YOUR LOCAL MP, REPORTS BACK
SUFFOLK STITCHERS & KNITTERS There are ‘knit and natter’ groups which meet on a regular basis, and others who prefer to stitch and knit at home. We make items for charities both at home and abroad for all age groups such as jumpers, hats, scarves, toys and clothes for premature babies. Another project concerns the knitting of squares which are then assembled into blankets. The items are sent around the world to orphanages, to organisations who shelter street children and families who live in dire poverty. Similarly, our work is sent to such charities in the UK which support those escaping domestic violence We are part of a national charity, Volunteering Matters, which helps us to obtain grant applications. There a number of groups in the Ipswich area, which can found at: www.volunteeringmatters.org.uk There is an open day on the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Old Crown Court in Ipswich, where you will find wool, fabric, needles, patterns and much more. Don’t be left in the dark this autumn, call 105 Since last writing, school has returned after the long summer holiday and for me, it’s time to return to Westminster and the day to day business of parliament. One of the first parliamentary matters for me was an opposition day debate in the House of Commons focusing on the topic of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and a meeting of the Energy and Climate Change Select, so it’s fair to say that energy matters have been high on my agenda. As we draw towards the shorter days and darker nights of autumn back home in Suffolk, not to mention the seasonal weather changes, I am delighted to welcome the launch of a new easy-to-remember number for power cuts. Launched in early September, 105 is a free of charge service, accessible via landline or mobile, which will put customers directly through to their local electricity network operator. The service can be used for reporting or getting further updates on power cuts in their area, concerns about over or underground electricity cables or sub-stations, or especially important - for reporting any welfare concerns for those being affected by power cuts or emergencies. In a mostly rural constituency like ours, it is especially important that our communities look out for each other and take time this autumn and winter to spare a thought for the more vulnerable and isolated in our neighbourhoods. Many people, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, aren’t sure who to call in the event of a power cut and may try to contact their energy supply company, instead of the network providers who maintain the network. This is particularly important when we are experiencing bad weather in winter as heavy storms can very quickly cause major disruption to electricity supply. I particularly welcome the introduction of 105 as a service as families and businesses in my constituency need to know where to go if they find themselves without power, either through severe weather or other disruption to service. 105 is a single, easy to remember number which prevents any confusion around who to call and most importantly, puts people in touch with the information they need when they need it. Linked closely to the issue of electricity supply is the matter of competitive pricing and on June 30 I contributed to a key session of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee when they considered the Competition and Market Authority’s Market Investigation report, specifically looking at transparency and clarity on price comparison websites for energy providers. I am keen to see greater transparency for consumers on this matter, ensuring that they genuinely can access the best deals and price plans for themselves. OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP: AN APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS Throughout my time as a young volunteer for the conservation group I have seen on countless occasions the great change that just a morning’s work can achieve. When you look back on a completed project that, however small, has made a By S Corley drastic impact on the woods to the benefit of the local community and the wildlife alike, you genuinely feel that you have made a difference. Since saving the woods from the Martlesham Park & Ride, the group has always strived to preserve them for the enjoyment of generations to come; from keeping the paths safe, to renovating wartime features and maintaining National Monument status for the bronze-age burial mounds. The inhabitants of the woods are themselves at the heart of what we do: a hazel habitat, for example, has been created for dormice while bird and bat boxes need monitoring and repair, as does the pond which is home to a large variety of life, including the protected great crested newt. The group is constantly in need of help and as such would be very grateful if anyone who has ever enjoyed a relaxing walk in the woods or is interested in doing something for the community in the fresh air might consider going along to a work morning sometime soon – held once per month on alternate Saturday and Sunday mornings. If interested to find out more, please email: pwcg.martlesham@gmail.com Your chance to get involved Sunday, October 16, 10am-noon: Volunteer Work Morning. All ages welcome; no need to book. Meet at the Education Area. Tools, training and light refreshments provided. Sunday, October 23, 9-11am: Nature Watch Club (ages 5-11). Meet at the Control Tower. Booking essential; please email: pwcg.martlesham@gmail.com For more details of the group’s events please visit pwcg.onesuffolk.net or join our members’ Facebook Group by messaging Duncan Sweeting.

OCTOBER AT TOYS ‘N’ NOISE Toys ’N’ Noise meets every Thursday in term-time at Rushmere Village Hall, Humber Doucy Lane. Drop in with your baby or pre-school children from 1.45-3pm. We fill the hall with all kinds of toys. We have a short snack time, followed by tea and coffee for the adults. We don’t charge a set fee, but welcome a small donation. Our music themed session has been moved to October 6. We have a visitor coming on October 20 to explain briefly about Operation Christmas Child, where people fill shoe boxes with stationary, toiletries and toys to send to children living in poverty. I remember the reaction of one boy, aged three, on hearing about sending children a bar of soap. He wrinkled his nose and said: “My mum buys the soap!” It was very sweet. There is no group on October 27 due to half term. You can find more at: www.rcfchurch.org.uk

MARTLESHAM AND KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOLS During the weeks of September the children attending both of our settings have been adjusting to their time without their parents and building new relationships with the special adults at playschool. Building firm foundations of children’s personal, social and emotional development are very important and allow children’s further learning possible. During the coming weeks we will support, observe and encourage which will allow the children to become the unique and independent people that they are. We look forward to exploring the environment around the settings – exploring the woods, walking to the shops and fruit and veg market, even taking the bus to the local library. The high adult to child ratio at the playschools mean that the children are fully supported when leaving the setting and can fully appreciate the fantastic area that we have on our doorstep. Our annual AGM will be held on Wednesday, October 11 at our Martlesham setting and all of our parents are welcome to attend. KESGRAVE & NORTHGATE KARATE NEWS All classes have started back after the summer break. If, like me, you have spent the summer allowing your body to slip back to the texture of marshmallow, now is an excellent time to start exercising in time for excess eating at Christmas! It has been a relatively quiet time on the karate competition front. The sounds of the groans and bruises from the summer course are starting to fade, but a good time was had by all and the Northgate Ninjas (pictured) put in an excellent performance for the team. All in all good fun, hard work and lots of laughs being the feedback. Many thanks to all the club members who came to the Ark in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday, September 3 to help promote the clubs and showcase their talents. A big well done to all the Red Dragons who took their grading there too. Georgina Lawson and Oscar Hunt were both selected to try out at the first round of selection for the U21 squad for the European Championships.
KESGRAVE KESTRELS FOOTBALL CLUB Our season is now underway with the senior teams starting in late August and the youth teams’ season starting early September. The Saturday Firsts are yet to win in two matches with two narrow one goal defeats. Reserves have won one and lost one match. Sunday senior teams have fared slightly better early on; the Sunday Firsts have one win and one draw in the early games and the Reserves have drawn all three matches so far. Only one weekend of youth fixtures played and a good start for the club with three wins, one draw and one defeat from the matches played. We are looking to extend our girls section with a new Under 10 team in Year 5 and we are currently recruiting players. Our plan is to train and develop the squad with friendly matches during this season and seek to enter the team into a league for the 2017 season. If you are interested please get in touch. We are also looking for girls to join our established Under 14 squad in Years 8 and 9. Our Little Kestrels groups for Reception, Year 1 and 2 are now up and running and are all fully subscribed. We are still registering interest and if you would like to register you can contact our club secretary. We ran three successful holiday football camps over the summer and have planned our next one for Monday, October 24 during half term. On Monday we will run a full day junior camp for all players up to 11 years which we will cap at 30 spaces so please book early to avoid disappointment. If there is demand we will also run a half day on Tuesday 25 aimed at younger players up to seven years. Again booking details for this are on our website. Georgie currently sits top of her category having won all her fights and Oscar is in second place in his category having lost only one of his and has also recently received his England Midlands Squad Badge. Both are through to the final round of selections on October 16 in Barnsley. This is a huge achievement so a massive well done to both of them. They are both competing for the England Midlands Squad in the Lion’s Cup in Luxembourg on the weekend of September 10. Watch this space to find out how they got on. Thanks, as always, must go to our club sponsors I.S Electricals, M+C Diesel Services and Chris Clow for their continued support in helping to fund the club. KESGRAVE BOWLS CLUB At the time of writing the season is all but over with just one game left for the Samford Wednesday afternoon teams. Both the Swifts and Skylarks have done quite well, but the last game will determine if the Swifts can finish second in their division. Our other teams have done well, but the Wednesday Triple Blues will be in a lower division in 2017. Well done to the Greens as they finished second in their division. With injuries, illness and holidays the captains have struggled some weeks to raise a team, but I guess all clubs have the same problem. The winners of our club pairs were Sally Hollingsworth and Jim McKay and second were David Cook and Colin Goodrum. The winners of our club triples were Don Baldock, Peter Rose and Barry Mills and second were Ray Murray, Jim Forsdike and John Gorham. The winners of the Peggy Meade trophy were Rick Calver and Marty Milbourne and second were Andy Smith and Jim McKay. Our ladies versus gents was won by the men this year, they must have had some luck. Our open triples tournament was won by A Barbers block, second was Dick Reeve and his block and third was Paul Oxborrow and his block. It was a good day despite some rain and everything went smoothly thanks to the organisation of Muriel and her wonderful band of helpers in the kitchen. Thanks also go to Sheila for keeping the scores and lots of other people who helped with the raffle and setting up and putting all the gear away at the end. Please accept my apologies if I have missed anybody. Just to remind everyone that our dinner and presentation is on Friday, December 2 at Rushmere Golf Club. If you wish to attend and haven’t completed your menu choice, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. Another reminder is our annual AGM in the bowls pavilion on Wednesday, October 26, 6.45 for 7pm sharp. Hopefully all our members and anyone else who wishes to find out about the game will attend. My thanks go to all who have helped in the smooth running of the club. Hopefully 2017 will be as good, if not better, that 2016. Joyce, secretary, 01473 626075

KESGRAVE CRICKET CLUB In this issue we round off the 2016 season for our 2nd XI and our Sunday XI. The 2nd XI finished their first Two Counties League season with two impressive wins. DBSL were beaten by four wickets, bowled out for 156 with Ryan Hoyle picking up the club’s best bowling figures of the year, a mightily impressive eight for 30, then 71 from Kieran Perez ensuring that the chase would have no complications. In the final game, Mistley 3’s bowling was put to the sword by Nathan Young (110), Ryan Hoyle (77) and Andy Trevor (48 not out) in an imposing 314-5. The hosts were then held to 185-5. The 2nd XI finished a very creditable third in Division 9 in their first season of Saturday league cricket. In keeping with their mixed league form this year, the Sunday XI finished their league season with a defeat and a victory. The defeat came at Easton in a rehearsal for the cup final where KCC could manage just 166-7 in response to the hosts’ 234-6. Better fortune in the last game when a splendid 115 by Ben Garnham and 58 by the consistent Ben Colver helped KCC to 235-4, Caribbeans making just 160 in reply. The Sunday XI finished fourth in Section A of the Suffolk Alliance. On then to the showpiece event of the Sunday season, the Suffolk Alliance Cup Final. Kesgrave faced a strong Easton team on their home ground. Easton won the toss and batted. A very high score looked on the cards, but some strong fielding and tight bowling towards the end of the innings kept the Easton total to a still formidable 236-7, Connor Betts the pick of the Kesgrave bowlers with three for 33. The Kesgrave innings began well with Ben Garnham (39) playing a pinch-hitting role and Ben Colver (63) providing just the start we needed. The middle-order all made starts, but were unable to carry on and as wickets fell and runs dried up the chance of a Kesgrave win looked increasingly slim. Rain forced the players off the field with Kesgrave needing over 50 at a tough rate with just three wickets left. Anxious to complete the game, the umpires resumed play with the rain easing but in dark conditions. A wicket fell almost immediately and Easton tightened their grip with some tight bowling, but skipper Sam Colver and young Connor Betts began to build a partnership, finding gaps in the field and running to great effect. The more defensively the Easton skipper set his field, the harder Sam and Connor ran. In an exciting finish they saw us home to victory in the last over, Sam unbeaten on 29 and Connor on 19. Cue the celebrations!
SPARK Teams Panthers introduce interclub junior league To provide increased race opportunities for Kesgrave youngsters, a four round junior SPARK league has been introduced and with three rounds already completed it is proving a great success. The youngsters have been split into five teams: Lions (yellow shirts), Pumas (black), Panthers (blue), Tigers (orange) and Jaguars (pink). Keeping teams the same where possible throughout the year helps the riders to get used to being part of a team and to team tactics. Racing takes place immediately prior to senior events with many youngsters remaining at the trackside to watch and support their older team mates in action. This mini-league has helped complement regional and even national racing for some of the young riders, while others who are newer or unable to commit the time or expense of travelling have extra racing opportunities at their own track, in addition to weekly training nights or the club’s own very popular individual championship series. The SPARK league has been running thoughout the summer. With the initial meetings taking place before team shirts were available it was difficult for the youngsters to identify with their team, some being so young that they were unaware who their team mates were and which team they were in. Coloured team shirts have changed the event beyond recognition, with riders now congregating with their team mates in the pits and shouting words of encouragement during a race. The atmosphere has been totally transformed and with these meetings being so well supported are sure to be added to the calendar again for next season (running from April to October). Our thanks go to the local charity SPARK for providing the funding for the coloured shirts for the teams to wear: www.kesgrave.org.uk/spark
So an exciting and successful end to our Sunday season. Congratulations to skipper Sam and to all who have contributed to our Sunday XI this year. In the next issue I will focus on the end of our 1st team’s season. How will they fare in their chase for promotion? Watch this space.
The coloured team shirts were supplied by Sportsclass Limited and have been a tremendous success with both riders and parents alike: www.sportsclasscobra.com

IPSWICH WANDERERS FC
IPSWICH RAVENS VOLLEYBALL With the start of autumn we are now turning our attention to the new indoor season when we will hold weekly playing and coaching sessions at St Alban’s School, Rushmere IP4 3NJ (near Ipswich Hospital) every Saturday from 2-4pm. If you are interested in giving them a try, whether as a complete beginner or an experienced player, now is the ideal time to join in with many of the players who started during the summer and have found out for themselves that volleyball is great fun, and really good exercise too. This season for experienced players we are aiming to build two teams to play in the monthly one-day tournaments at Maidenhall where we will pit ourselves against other volleyball clubs from across Suffolk and Norfolk, as well as starting a new ladies team to play full scale matches against other Suffolk ladies teams. Ipswich Ravens will welcome any new players, male or female, experienced or complete beginner, and any age from teenagers upwards. Qualified coaches run the sessions with a mixture of training drills and friendly games, making them highly enjoyable while helping participants to improve their skills. If you are interested in joining this growing sport, visit www.ipswichravens.org.uk or call/text 07508 351875.

November is going to be an important month for Wanderers. Our successful run in the prestigious FA Vase last season has given us a bye into the second round proper. As we don’t yet know who our opponents will be, all eyes at The Doucy will be on the draw to be made on Monday, October 24. The game itself is scheduled for Saturday, November 12 so I will write more about this in the next edition. Shane Wardley’s team has been taking shape and early Premier Division results have been mixed. Perhaps the local derby at home to Brantham Athletic, a rare Friday evening match under floodlights, will see us take the points. CHURCH NEWS

There’s a lot of talk in churches about the power of forgiveness. It is one of the main tenets of Christianity and one that is, probably, the hardest to achieve. What exactly is forgiveness? It is to show mercy by pardoning someone who has wronged us and in so doing frees us from a burden that could cause us bitterness. Sometimes forgiving can seem unfair as if the person has ‘gotten away with it’. This doesn’t mean that we haven’t been hurt or that we’ve made something bad good. It is a choice we make not to dwell on the wrong done and because memories can’t be erased forgiveness may have to be done many times over. We must remember to forget! Join us on Sunday mornings at 11.30am (Café & Children’s Church at 10.30am), for Wednesday Bible Study at 8pm or Young People’s Night on alternate Fridays. The Ark Church, Wolsey House, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR. Our newsletter is available via free subscription. Deadlines! We all get them from time to time and they are not always easy to meet and can create pressure. A while back I worked for the media and had deadlines to meet every week. To do my job I had to persuade other people to write short articles and submit them to me and then I had to send them on to the editor – talk about pressure. Life is full of deadlines – to get to appointments, to catch buses… – so how can we best deal with them? Diaries and lists are useful but sometimes they can add to the pressure. To best deal with the situation I find that handing it all over to the Lord diminishes the pressure considerably and releases a creativity that leads answers and peace. The Boiler House meets every Sunday at Heath Primary School, Bell Lane, Kesgrave, at 10.30am.
Declaring God’s Way - Sharing His Love
What wonderful weather we are still having as we enter the autumn season. After a good summer we are still experiencing really hot days with lots of sunshine. Today at Aldeburgh it was absolutely beautiful with a calm sea and a warm wind to help soak up the sunshine. I have said many times before how fortunate we are to live in such close proximity to the coast and the countryside. Certainly a good reason to give thanks to God for his wonderful creation. Here at Rushmere Baptist Church we are well into our autumn programmes. Our new Alpha Course started on Thursday, September 29 and will run until Thursday, December 8. Each evening begins at 7pm with refreshments and cake followed by the new Alpha Film Series and then group discussions with the evening finishing at approximately 9.30pm. Alpha is designed for people from all walks of life and provides a friendly non-pressured environment for people to openly discuss and ask questions about life and how God and Jesus can fit into it. We certainly have had some interesting and challenging questions in previous sessions, but that is what Alpha is for. No question is a silly question or off limits. If you know someone who might like to join the adventure this season please contact the church on the number given below and ask for an invitation with all the details on. Our usual services and events are as follows: Sunday
