A WORD FROM THE EDITOR When I roll out of bed in the morning I immediately head to the kitchen, put the kettle on and switch on the TV news. I like to know what’s happening in the world before my day begins, but it’s often quite depressing and sometimes makes me quite grumpy. By the time I get into the car to drive to work I need an antidote, which I usually find in music. However, earlier this week I switched on just in time to catch a programme on Radio 4 called The Pleasures of Brecht, a celebration of the simple joys in life and the story of Brecht’s much-loved poem that described them. Brecht’s poem, Vergnügungen, is a list of pleasures, moving from “the first look out of the window in the morning” via showering, swimming, the dog and “comfortable shoes” to “being friendly”. As I listened I began to consider the simple pleasures in my own day to day existence and my mood soon lifted. Predictably that first cup of tea topped the list, closely followed by my son’s face when I catch him watching something funny on TV. I also include a perfectly boiled egg, a free checkout at the supermarket, the smell of dinner cooking when I get in from work (rarely happens), discovering someone has emptied the dishwasher (never happens but I’m hoping my husband reads this), a perfectly chilled glass of white wine at the end of a productive day, chatting with friends, finding £5 I didn’t know I had, dark chocolate, an unexpected smile from anyone, running into a friend I haven’t seen for a while, finding the perfect pair of jeans, meeting someone who inspires me, hitting a deadline, new socks, clean windows, feeling included, cake… I could go on and on, but every day since I’ve identified new pleasures (and been forced to accept that I am a chocoholic) which I would probably have ignored if this hadn’t been on my mind. And that’s the point. We rarely take the time to appreciate the simple things in life but when we do we are likely to find much to be thankful for. I’m still going to watch the news, I want to be socially and politically aware, but I’m determined to acknowledge and appreciate the simple pleasures because it makes me happier. I hope you can make a list and that it gives you lots to be thankful for, especially when the news gets you down. I wonder how many lists begin with a perfect cup of tea!

REASONABLY PRICED TRANSPORT IN YOUR COMMUNITY We urgently need volunteer drivers to keep our much-valued services operating. BSEVC Connecting Communities provides reasonably priced transport for those wishing to travel, and who for whatever reasons are unable to access public transport near their homes. Often in more rural locations public transport is so infrequent that it’s not possible to get to and from appointments, work or schools at the necessary times, or where there are bus stops and train stations they may not be within the passenger’s walking capacity. Our chief aims are to prevent people from becoming isolated in their homes and to offer them the opportunity to be independent, not totally reliant on their families and friends. All our services are available by just ringing our office in Stowmarket to book a journey. We have four fully accessible vehicles which cover Mid Suffolk and Ipswich/ Kesgrave areas. We also operate a community car service. Most of the cars used are owner drivers. We are totally reliant on volunteer drivers to keep our services running. With more volunteer drivers we can take more passengers to hospital appointments, clinical appointments, day centres, social clubs, shopping, and visiting relatives and friends. We have a number of care home and shop staff who rely on us to get them to and from work. We also have passengers who use us regularly to get to pick up points for public transport. The office staff in our Stowmarket base will be pleased to give more information on full fare structures and the registration procedure along with how to book journeys. Francesca, also in our Stowmarket office, will be so grateful to hear from any prospective volunteers and will be able to give you all the information you need to apply to join us. We know from passengers’ comments that we provide a necessary, much loved and much valued service, and for us and our volunteers this is very rewarding and satisfying. NEWS KESGRAVE TOWN COUNCIL

New Inclusive Roundabout at Broke Hall Playing Field In July 2019 Rushmere St Andrew Parish Council took proud possession of an allinclusive roundabout on Broke Hall Playing Field, Salehurst Road. It has been designed for disabled and able-bodied children to enjoy the sensation of spinning, all together, at the same time with room also for parents/carers. It’s a fabulous addition to the play equipment already there. A big thank-you to District Councillors Mark Newton and Debra Dean for funding this project from their East Suffolk Council Enabling Communities Budgets. Pedestrian Crossing on Foxhall Road opposite Golf Hotel The work is scheduled to take place within the next two years and we are pleased to inform residents that a scheme has been approved by Suffolk County Council and funding kindly provided by Councillors Robert Whiting and Paul West from their Locality Budgets of Suffolk County Council for a pedestrian crossing along Foxhall Road opposite the Golf Hotel. This is an extremely busy road and it would be a very welcome addition for pedestrians crossing the road. Should you have any questions regarding this in the meantime please contact Councillor Whiting or the parish clerk. For details on what’s happening in the parish of Rushmere St Andrew please visit our website or look out for the Rushmere St Andrew Parish Summer Newsletter. www.rushmerestandrew.onesuffolk.net

BUS NOTES While there have been no developments so far about the display of bus times at the stops, a far-reaching change is that First bus group has decided to give up all its bus subsidiaries, not only in Suffolk, Essex and numerous other counties, but Greyhound in the USA as well. First in Suffolk will possibly be sold on to one of the other bus groups, but they will have a hard job meeting First’s standards. For my part, I would prefer that our local routes be provided by Ipswich Buses, an outstanding municipal operation who now run the former First routes around Manningtree. The scheme by First to install electronic displays seems to have come to a stop. One where it is badly needed is at the Great Colman Street stop in Ipswich, which has been affixed to a post but never been activated. That is a very well-used stop by Kesgrave and Martlesham residents returning from shopping expeditions, but the only information provided is for the Park & Ride bus, and no others.

Day Trip to the Seaside! Places are still available on our Annual Senior Citizens Outing to Felixstowe on Monday 19 August. Come and join us for a relaxing day out; the coach leaves Kesgrave at 11am. Once in Felixstowe, sit down and enjoy a cup of tea and a game or two of bingo, followed by a fish and chip lunch. We have hired the popular Hut, a fantastic venue right on the seafront. You can then sit back and look out to sea or go for a stroll along the prom. We will return to Kesgrave by approximately 4pm. You get all this for £3.50 (£5 non-Kesgrave residents). Booking forms available from the 2nd Stop Shop or the town council office. Who You Gonna Call? – 101 The Police Non-Emergency Number is there for you to report crimes and other concerns that do not require an emergency response. For example, if you wish to inform police about a crime in your area, your property has been damaged, you suspect drug use or dealing in your neighbourhood. For the police to investigate an issue it is essential that the public report the concerns, either through 101 or online so that evidence builds up to support putting resources into investigations. You should always call 999 when it is an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, someone suspected of crime is nearby, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened. Kesgrave Conservation Group (KCG) The group and Kesgrave Town Council recently met with East Suffolk Norse and agreed to update Pergola Piece with rose planting and hedge works and planting of oxy daisies by the Scout Group in the town, along with muchneeded works to Pilbroughs Walk ancient hedge. MARTLESHAM SURGERY PRACTICE & PATIENT GROUP NEWS Update on our Falls Prevention Project Both of our first two exercise programmes are now full, but we still have a few places left on the third programme starting early 2020. We held an information event about this at the Pavilion in May and hope to hold another in the autumn. If you received a personal invitation to the May event and couldn’t attend, but you would like to know more, please leave a note at reception saying you’d like to attend the next one. I am pleased to report that our recent campaign for increasing PPG membership has been very successful. We now have 10 members which enables us to tackle more projects for the benefit of patients. Watch this space for updates. At the time of writing, the practice is about to undergo a CQC inspection (similar to an Ofsted inspection for schools). The PPG will have an input into this on behalf of patients. There is a new patient survey in the waiting room if you would like to provide feedback. The results will be considered by the practice and the PPG. You can also feedback your experience of the practice via: www.mhdoctors.co.uk Please tell us what’s going well or make suggestions for anything that can be improved.

Last year’s long hot summer highlighted watering problems and Karen said it was important to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. The best way is to water thoroughly and then mulch to conserve the moisture and keep the soil at an even temperature. Karen is such an entertaining speaker and there was lots of laughter throughout. We welcomed several members from the Felixstowe Guild to our quiz night on Tuesday 25 June. The questions were not very difficult and with nobody taking it too seriously we enjoyed a fun evening. The birthday party on Tuesday 23 July is out last meeting before we break for August, but we have the mystery tour and afternoon tea to look forward to on Tuesday 20 August. NEXT MEETINGS Tuesday 3 September: We return for a talk by Stephen Hope who spent a year in the Falklands as a journalist and will tell us about the islands as they are now. Most of us had first heard of them during the Falklands war. Tuesday 17 September: In a talk entitled Sheep to Shawl, Peter Carr will talk about and demonstrate spinning wool. Tuesday 1 October: Rescheduled from April, Barbara Faulkner will entertain us with her love of hats. After her Ascot talk last year, we can look forward to a very amusing evening. We welcome new members who can visit for two meetings before joining. The annual membership fee is £15 and we charge £2.50 per meeting to include refreshments and raffle tickets. Meetings start at 7.30pm in Kesgrave Community Centre. For more information please contact Gloria Everett: 01473 614991 www.kesgravecoopwomensguild.onesuffolk.net

OUT & ABOUT IPSWICH COUNTRY MARKET Kesgrave WI Our July meeting was held on a very warm evening. Our speaker was David Morton who spoke about the history of Buckingham Palace. Who could ever believe that there have been so many changes over past years? David gave us some very interesting facts about the present building such as the number of bedrooms, offices, reception rooms, staff employed and, the one that amused us most, 87 bathrooms! However, visitors to the palace on open days are not allowed to use any of them – they must wait until they are outside in the gardens for the portable ones! David’s interest in the palace stems from his father, who had been employed at the palace when he was a young child. Our monthly competition was a photograph of Woodbridge with Enid Castle taking first and Margaret Stockton coming in second. During the business section of the meeting members sadly noted the passing of Eileen Clarke, one of our older members who had regularly brought hand crafted items and plants to our trading table. Sheila Stokes gave a very informative report from her visit to the National WI AGM held in Bournemouth in early June. 2019 is proving to be a busy year for Kesgrave WI. On June 20 a team entered the WI Summer Quiz at Needham Market and June 21 was spent at The Hut on Felixstowe Prom with coffee, a fish & chip lunch, afternoon tea and paddling in glorious sunshine. Later that evening Kesgrave members joined Bucklesham & Brightwell, Nacton, Levington and Martlesham WIs at Bucklesham Village Hall for our annual group meeting. The speaker/entertainment for the evening was The Military Wives Choir from Wattisham. What an excellent evening – finished off with a delicious buffet supper.

Do you appreciate good home cooking and like to shop locally? Then why not shop at Ipswich Country Market for a great selection of hand baked, grown and crafted goods? Why not try our savoury bakes served with unique tasty chutney? Maybe you like homemade jam, marmalade or local honey? We also sell a variety of cakes. Each week our gardeners have flowers and freshly picked vegetables. Soft fruits are now available and some are being turned into new season jam by our cooks, all free of artificial additives. You may also be interested to know that we sell local free range eggs from hens, ducks and bantams and you can order these along with many other items in advance, to collect when you need them. Our crafters also offer variety; we have practical items from aprons to peg bags, knitted items and gift items like beaded jewellery. We offer unique handmade cards and gift bags or boxes and don’t forget we are also happy to take your individual orders. We are open on Thursday mornings from 10.15-11.30am at Rushmere Village Hall on Humber Doucy Lane IP4 3PB. We have plenty of free parking and home baked refreshments with a free tea or coffee on your first visit. We also have bacon rolls on offer on the first Thursday of the month. REPORT FROM DR DAN POULTER, MP Undoubtedly, the best part of my week is coming home to Suffolk on a Thursday evening and leaving behind all the stresses and pressures of a week in parliament, not to mention the congestion. Returning home to Suffolk makes me really appreciate all that is special about this county – its rural character, great sense of community spirit and vibrant market towns. Indeed only a few weeks ago, we celebrated the third ever Suffolk Day – showcasing all that is great about this wonderful county. I have also enjoyed meeting so many visitors and residents taking time out to enjoy our fantastic local fetes and community events. It takes a great community effort by willing volunteers to pull these events together and on the whole, we have certainly been blessed with perfect summer weather to enjoy them. For me, it’s the perfect opportunity to meet and talk to many people whilst also stocking up on local Suffolk produce. Here in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, we are incredibly lucky to have a number of bustling market towns, all surrounded by rolling countryside and Suffolk’s famous wide-open skies. Indeed, Suffolk’s natural landscape has inspired writers, artists and musicians for centuries – Constable, Munnings and Britten to name a few, and of course more recently, Framlingham’s very own Ed Sheeran. With such a vibrant, growing economy, and connections to London, the Midlands and beyond, it’s no wonder that so many major businesses and small rural start-ups are choosing to make Suffolk their home. One of the reasons that so many of us choose to live in Suffolk is because of its rural heritage and our beautiful countryside, and while we would all agree that we need an appropriate level of small scale development and affordable homes to help support young families to continue to live and work in Suffolk, none of us wants to see our countryside destroyed by inappropriate overdevelopment. Planning is, of course, a local matter decided by our local councils. When deciding planning policy and where there should be new businesses and homes, it’s important that our local councils take an evidence based approach, and always prioritise brownfield sites over building on the countryside. That is why it’s so important for our local councils to make sure they have a local development framework and land supply plan in place to discourage inappropriate development. I will continue to work closely with our local councillors to ensure that we protect the rural nature and integrity of Suffolk’s towns and villages and will always stand up for the best interests of local residents in fighting inappropriate planning applications. We teach Tai Chi as an exercise and relaxation form, without any religious influence. Our classes are designed with the community in mind. Class fees are minimal. They cover hall hire, insurance and instructor courses. The remaining balance is donated to external charities, with the main focus on local charity. OUT & ABOUT SUFFOLK INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY Wednesday 11 September: Motoring Heritage Structures by Thomas Pinner Wednesday 9 October: Martlesham Heath Airfield by Howard King I hope everyone’s been enjoying strawberries as much as me over the summer. I had a huge crop and made loads of jam, but sadly none of it set! Never mind – it’s still yummy. My speciality yellow courgettes also went crazy and I bagged (literally!) over 2kgs of broad beans. However, my ‘over winter’ onions just wouldn’t grow so I ate them as roasted mini onions and pickled some to, so at least they weren’t wasted. Not a bad year for me so far! Tips for August Water as often as you can (obviously); this really is the dry season. Feed tomato plants and sweetcorn. Pick runner beans which should continue on into the autumn, lift your potatoes and onions and store them carefully, take up strawberry runners and pot them for new plants next year – some people suggest you renew them every three years and some say continue for five years. Carry out repeat sowings for lettuce and radishes. Harvest soft fruit, thin down apples and pears to one or two fruit per cluster and prune fruit trees by the end of the month and ensure branches don’t cross each other. A lot of people seem to have got the ‘Grow Your Own’ bug in recent months so all of our plots are currently taken. However, we’re happy to hold a waiting list so do contact our membership secretary, Angela Brown: 01473 612283 / membership@kesgrave-allotments.org.uk Sally Peckham

PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP Our annual glow worm survey and bat walk took place at the end of June, attended by 11 people. Disappointingly, only six female glow worms were spotted, and no males, but still exciting for those who had never seen one before. We were lucky to see, and hear with bat detectors, pipistrelle bats flying around the trees hunting for insects, and at times only just above our heads. Noctule bats were heard but not seen. In July the volunteers added more bark chippings to some of the worst areas of the paths to keep them from getting overly muddy during wet weather, and rebuilt a section of the path that had started to collapse into the northern revetment’s trench. There are no working parties during August due to holidays so we will be returning in September. We hope you enjoy your summer. DATES FOR THE DIARY Volunteer Work Morning (all ages): Saturday 21 September, 10am-noon. Meet at the Education Area. Tools, training and light refreshments provided. All welcome – no need to book. Nature Explorers (ages 11-18): Saturday 21 September, 9-11am. Please book a place via our email below. New volunteers of all ages and abilities are always welcome. No experience needed. OUT & ABOUT RENOWNED BRITISH FILM DIRECTOR TO UNVEIL FILM FEAST SUFFOLK LINE-UP A seven-time Oscar nominated film director is set to unveil the full programme for a festival celebrating film and locally sourced food and drink. The second Film Feast Suffolk festival will be held from October 4-7 and will feature films, documentaries and short films from around the world screened at 16 venues across the county. Film Feast patron Mike Leigh, who was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship in 2015, will be coming to The Riverside in Woodbridge to launch the festival programme on Tuesday 30 July with a screening of two of his films and a Q&A session. Neil McGlone, Film Feast Festival director, said: “We are very excited to announce that our patron, Mike Leigh, will be launching our Film Feast Suffolk 2019 programme. He has had an incredible career in both film and theatre as a writer and director spanning more than five decades.

BLUE CROSS HOME DIRECT Finding loving homes for loved pets Giving up a pet is a tough decision for any owner, but peoples’ circumstances can change so quickly and for a variety of reasons. Blue Cross knows that leaving a family home and coming to a rehoming centre can be a difficult time for owners and their pets, but there’s another way that the charity can help people to find loving new homes for their pet, and that’s with their Home Direct service. Home Direct gives owners who need to find a new home for their pet the opportunity to keep them until Blue Cross can find a new owner, instead of bringing them into one of the charity’s rehoming centres. This saves the pet the stress of staying in kennels as they’ll go straight from one loving home to another. It also frees up more space at Blue Cross’s rehoming centres and with the charity’s pet fosterers, allowing them to take in more pets that have no other home to go to, for example stray, abandoned or neglected pets.

“Everybody has their own favourite Mike Leigh film, be it Abigail’s Party, Life is Sweet, Naked, Topsy Turvy, Vera Drake or Secrets and Lies, to name just a few. I am delighted that, in consultation with Mike, we have chosen my own personal favourite of Mike’s films, Nuts in May, from 1976. We will also be screening Mike’s short film, A Light Snack from 1982.”

The team at Blue Cross carries out a full assessment of the pet, as they do with all pets they rehome, before creating a rehoming profile for the pet. The pet and their profile is then promoted alongside all our other pets on the rehoming section of the Blue Cross website.

To celebrate the launch, The Riverside has designed a special three-course meal inspired by the screening of Nuts in May. The film stars Alison Steadman (Pamela Shipman, Gavin and Stacey) as Candice-Marie and Roger Sloman (Les Coker, EastEnders) as her husband, Keith. It is a light-hearted comic tale of a possessive husband who takes his timorous wife on a camping holiday in Dorset, with often disastrous consequences.

When a potential new owner applies for the pet, and the team at Blue Cross thinks will be a good match, they arrange for them to visit the pet at their home or for the pet to come to one of the charity’s rehoming centres for an introduction. The team will ensure everything goes smoothly and if the match goes well, the pet will be rehomed to their new home.

This year’s festival, which is set to be bigger and better than ever, is being sponsored by the East of England Co-op. Oli Watts, Head of Communications and Community from East of England Coop, said: “We are delighted to be Headline Sponsors for Film Feast Suffolk and excited to see the festival expand across the county, with more than a dozen venues signing up to host an event. “It’s very exciting for us to support such a unique festival for the second year running and a great opportunity to celebrate all the amazing local food and drink we have right on our doorstep.” The launch night will be held at The Riverside on Tuesday, July 30 at 5.45pm, with the option of a three-course meal with Mike Leigh based around the camping theme of the film. Limited tickets are available for the meal, which costs £38 per person, and includes a ticket to the film and Q&A session. Alternatively, tickets for the film and Q&A session will cost £7 each with the film starting at 7.45pm. All tickets will go on sale at 10am on Friday 28 June and can be booked online at www.theriverside.co.uk or via the Riverside box office on 01394 382174. The full programme of events will shortly be available with information on how to buy tickets. For detail visit: www.filmfeast.co.uk

Blue Cross, which has rehoming centres and animal hospitals across the country, rehomes dogs, cats, small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs and horses through its Home Direct scheme. Clare Williamson, centre manager at Blue Cross Suffolk in Wherstead, said: “Blue Cross is about helping pets and their owners throughout their life in whatever ways we can. We know how much pets can change a person’s life – we get lovely updates every day from people who have taken on pets from us – and it’s great for us to think we have helped to change theirs and the pet’s life. “Sadly we know that life changes can mean a person can sadly no longer look after their pet. We’re here to help and support people who have had to make the difficult decision to rehome their pet and have done the best thing for them by coming to us for help to find a loving new home. We help people to rehome their pets for all sorts of different reasons. For example people’s financial situation may have changed and they can no longer afford to keep their pet or they are moving into accommodation where they can’t take their pet with them such as a care home.” For more details on the Blue Cross Home Direct scheme or to find out more about the charity or the pets currently looking for homes visit: www.bluecross.org.uk

WHERE ON EARTH ARE YOU? Suffolk Libraries are asking this question for their space-themed Summer Reading Challenge, which started on July 20. The campaign, using the hashtag #SLWhereOnEarth, encourages social media users to post selfies of themselves reading books over the summer, no matter where they are in the world. Leon Paternoster, Head of Digital & Marketing for Suffolk Libraries, said: “You can read anything, anywhere for the Summer Reading Challenge,

www.keepingintouchwith.com/kesgrave

including eBooks and eAudio, no matter where you are in Suffolk, or the world! For parents and carers, #SLWhatOnEarth gives children something fun to do over the long break, while keeping up their reading levels. They can also pick up or download a book themselves from the library or our website.” This social media campaign is inspired by Suffolk Libraries’ annual Summer Reading Challenge, in which the theme this year is Space Chase, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. HEATHLANDS COMMUNITY PRE-SCHOOL What a busy summer term it has been! Our Summer Fair was a great success and enjoyed by all. Thanks to everyone for their donations and helping out to make this day special. The children have been enjoying being outside in the warmer weather and watching our flowers bloom and our crops fruit, as well as exploring the wildlife we have in the garden. The children have been exploring the new electronic whiteboard that we have had installed and have been producing some lovely drawings and mark making. We have been preparing our older children for their journey into primary school with visits to their new schools and visits from new teachers. We had an amazing and emotional graduation ceremony and the children shared with us their plans for their futures and performed some special songs. We would like to send our very best wishes to all the children and their parents moving onto primary school. We look forward to welcoming our new children and their families in September and would like to wish everyone a fantastic summer holiday. Heathlands is a well-established, committee-run pre-school situated in the grounds of Broke Hall Community Primary School. We can offer funded places for eligible two year olds and for all other children the term after their third birthday. Breakfast and afterschool clubs are also available, although spaces are very limited. We are pleased to accept applications for a place for terms starting January 2020 and beyond. Please contact us on: 01473 417517

The event was put together with the organisation of Suffolk Cricket, generous sponsorship from The KBB Centre and use of the facilities at Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club.

The sessions are on Wednesdays 9 and 30 October at 9.30am, 1.30pm or 7pm on both days. We are also holding another evening only session on Wednesday 27 November, again at 7pm. We look forward to meeting you at one of the above sessions, where you will have a tour of the school, see the Foundation class in action, meet the teachers and enjoy a coffee and a chat.

This year they hope to build on this and have even more children join for what will hopefully now be an annual event. Due to its popularity, the event has been extended this year to a three-day event, running from Wednesday 7 to Friday 9 August.

The application process will be explained and staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

The idea behind running the event was to get as many children as possible in one place playing cricket for free. Last year the Thursday saw an Under-9 day with more than 100 children taking part in non-competitive cricket matches across six pitches. Each team played on average six matches against teams. Friday was an Under-12 day which turned out to be even hotter for them than the Thursday! Three hardball pitches and one softball pitch were run so that all abilities could take part.

Congratulations to our grand finalist of the BBC 500 Words Competition, Eddie Firman! Eddie and his family attended celebrations at Windsor Castle last month and met a number of celebrities, including HRH Duchess of Cornwall. Well done on your success! We hope you are all enjoying the summer holidays and we look forward to seeing all our returning, and new, families on Wednesday 4 September.

AUTUMN TERM AT BRIGHT STARS

Roger Peck of KBB Centre said: “The KBB Centre is very proud to sponsor the KBB Grassroots Cricket Festival. As a local business we are passionate about supporting the community and local sport, particularly at grassroots level. We hope that the festival will increase participation and awareness of the sport for youngsters and help inspire a new generation of cricket players and enthusiasts in the area. We believe it’s very important to encourage children to partake in sports and to help them reach their potential, aiding both their personal and sporting growth.

Fun activity sessions for pre-school aged children with parents, grandparents, friends, family and/or carers on the second and fourth Mondays of each month during term times from 10.30am-noon at St Michael’s Church Centre, Martlesham Heath IP5 3PL.

“We do hope the festival becomes an annual fixture in the Suffolk Cricket calendar and look forward to being able to assist with the continued development of the event in the foreseeable future.”

The autumn term dates are September 9 and 23, October 14 and 28, November 11 and 25 and December 9. Just turn up, there’s no need to let us know in advance.

SCHOOLS / CHURCH NEWS

EARLY YEARS AT HEATH PRIMARY SCHOOL Outdoor Learning in the Early Years What a fantastic year it’s been for our Early Years! Lot of people, including our wonderful Parents and Friends Association, have been working really hard to further improve the outdoor area for our Early Years children. With a large space to work with and some great resources already in place, including sandpits, mud kitchens, a willow tunnel and a range of outdoor apparatus, the children already had a fabulous space to play and learn in. However, as part of a whole-school drive to continue to improve the outdoor learning provision, we have been able to find funding to invest in further equipment for the Early Years outdoor area. Our children have enjoyed being able to ride around our brand-new race circuit on our new trikes and bikes. They have further developed their social play with our new large wooden vehicle-themed wooded role-play equipment, which includes a car, caravan and boat. The lovely summer weather that we have enjoyed recently has also provided the children with the opportunity to explore and interact with our new cascading water trough. Reception Intake 2020 We will be holding a Reception open morning on Tuesday 1 October at 9.30am for parents/carers and children who will be due to start Reception in September 2020. For more information, or to obtain an application form, please contact the school office on 01473 622806. If you would like to look around the school, please call to arrange an appointment for a guided tour at a time that is convenient to you. August is the time for holidays and the Ark is no different. During this month we will be suspending our normal activities to give our members time to spend with their families, hopefully enjoying the sun and doing social stuff together. Family is very important to us and we know that it is to God too, as it was the one of the first things instituted when we were created. For us at the Ark it’s always God first, family next and church after that. With that in mind throughout the month there will be no adult or children’s Sunday School at 10.30am and also no evening services except Communion on 4 August at 6.30pm. Normal morning services will still begin at 11.30am. Then everything will return to usual on 15 September. This will give our teachers a break and time to look at new curriculums for the coming year. We will also be having barbecues and picnics, weather permitting, both at church and over in Felixstowe at Landguard Fort Beach. More details can be found on our website below. We are a very familyoriented church and our goal is to bring more people in to know the love that God has for them. Want to know more then maybe we’ll see on Sunday. Join us on Sunday mornings at 11.30am (Adult Sunday School and Children’s Church, 10.30am) at The Ark Church, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR. You can contact us via email at: arkipswichuk@gmail.com We can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter @arkipswich or online at www.arkipswich.co.uk where you’ll find latest updates on our ‘What’s Happening at the Ark’ page.
