A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
NEWS
I’ve just been informed that Auntie Sarah will be visiting Suffolk on December 3 and as it’s the perfect opportunity to get Christmas presents to that side of the family (all 11 of them) I’m now on a deadline! Thank goodness there are many, many Christmas markets and festivals coming up. They are a particularly useful place to find locally produced gifts for out-of-towners. I’m definitely focused on finding handmade gifts this year, possibly inspired by the beautiful Christmas Tree decoration I received from a close friend last year. It was one of my favourite presents and I’m secretly hoping she gives me another this year. I have been dropping heavy hints since June or thereabouts so I’m quite hopeful.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOSPICE’S NEW RETAIL CENTRE
There are many good reasons to shop local at Christmas, not least the fact that your spending will boost the local economy, save or indeed generate jobs, support local entrepreneurs and create a more vibrant and engaged community. There’s also the social aspect, the fact that you are more likely to find quirky, one-off items, maybe even try before you buy and get a better deal or some advice.
Patrick Otter, St Elizabeth Hospice’s retail area manager, said: “Following the opening of our hugely popular retail centre in town last year we have been eager to open another one in a community area for a while, and Martlesham is an ideal location for our second retail centre.
According to a new study, UK shoppers are predicted to spend £73 billion this Christmas, with online sales accelerating to unprecedented levels. Apparently convenience, price comparison and avoiding crowds and queues are three of the main reasons why online shopping is so popular, but don’t assume than ‘online’ and ‘local’ are entirely contradictory. Most of our local retailers sell online so you can take advantage of the benefits of online shopping and support local business at the same time. For me, Christmas means cleaning the house from top to bottom (sad I know, but deeply embedded) and down ‘n’ dirty old style shopping with the crowds, the queues, the Christmas music, carol singers, hot chocolate, mince pies and a glass or two of mulled wine to soothe aching muscles. I can’t wait. On behalf of my colleagues here at Mansion House Publishing I wish you and yours a Happy and Peaceful Christmas.

St Elizabeth Hospice is opening a brand new retail centre in Martlesham and is looking to recruit a team of volunteers to help when it opens. The hospice opened its first retail centre in Holywells Road 18 months ago and it has proved so successful, the local charity has decided to open another one in Martlesham. The retail centre is expected to be very popular and will require a number of volunteers to help in a variety of roles.
“All our shops get very busy and we expect this new retail centre to have a constant flow of customers, so we need a number of capable volunteers to assist in the store. If you love vinyl, can spot an antique or love to organise, and want to help your local hospice, we’d love to hear from you.” Volunteer roles will include serving customers, using the till, merchandising and stock preparation for new and donated goods, driving a van, creating appealing displays and administration. The store will open in early 2017 and will sell a range of good quality secondhand items including furniture, clothes, accessories, homeware, DVDs, vinyl, books and more. If you would like to apply to volunteer in the new retail centre or for more information, please visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/volunteer or contact: volunteer@stelizabethhospice.org.uk / 01473 707939

It has been some years since the teen facilities were put in at Cedarwood Green. It was agreed that maintenance work be done to refresh some items there to make it look pleasant for the families and teens who use it. Work on the entrance gate to the Millennium Jubilee Hall Car Park should also soon take place, the design having had to change to make it secure and robust enough to exclude motor vehicles from this area overnight. Work will also take place at some other vulnerable green spaces in Kesgrave to make them inaccessible to vehicles. Traffic and Pedestrian Working Group News The Working Group met on November 7 to discuss the problems caused by the traffic hold-ups in the week prior to the meeting. The subject of air quality in Kesgrave in relation to pollution from vehicle emissions was also raised. Suffolk Coastal District Council monitor air quality across the district and concern was expressed that there is only one monitoring point in Kesgrave. The proposed crossing of the A1214 at Cambridge Road is on the agenda for the town council meeting on December 14. The council will consider the SCC Highways recommendation that the crossing consist of dropped curbs and a centre island refuge rather than a Zebra Crossing. The time incurred in carrying out further surveys as to the suitability of a Zebra crossing would mean that the funding already agreed for this would be lost. The new layout could be converted at a later date if further funding was found to carry out the survey work and for the cost of the hardware and road surfacing required for this type of crossing. The group also discussed a recent speed survey carried out on Penzance Road which found that most drivers adhere to the 30mph speed limit, but there are some who drive at inappropriate speed for a built-up area. A proposal to join Rushmere and other parishes in developing a Community Speedwatch scheme will be discussed on December 14. If the town council is in favour of joining the scheme, there will be an opportunity for residents to put themselves forward for training to help monitor and report speeding motorists.
Play and Open Space Working Group News By the time you read this, work to improve the football area on Oak Meadow should have been completed, meaning that children and families will be able to play there in most weathers without wearing out the surface or braving the mud. Funding of this project was obtained from SPARK which will enable the council to work on another phase to increase the amount of play equipment on Oak Meadow.
Evening of Reflection, Friday, December 16 On Friday, December 16 at 7pm, the town council will hold its annual Evening of Reflection at Legion Green (near the Royal British Legion). This annual event is about remembering those who are no longer with us, so please join us by hanging one of our stars, with a dedication from you, on our Tree of Remembrance. You can sing along to a couple of well known Christmas carols or simply enjoy remembering your loved one over a hot drink. The memory stars can be collected from the town council office or the 2nd Stop Charity Shop, or you can download a star from: www.kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk
At their meeting on October 17 the working group agreed that an application for Section 106 funding be made towards play equipment for children and outdoor exercise equipment for adults and teens. We hope the application is successful to ensure that all ages are catered for.
Town Council Meetings The next full town council meeting is on December 5 at 7.15pm. For a full list of committee dates and working groups, visit: www.kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk

NEWS
MESSAGE FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLORS: NOVEMBER 2016 Great news for Suffolk’s Early Years Foundation Stage Profile Results 2016 Provisional figures published by the Department for Education in October show an increase in Suffolk children achieving a Good Level of Development in their Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) results. The assessments recognise children’s achievements in the EYFS. This includes key areas of learning and development such as communication and language, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development. Children are assessed by their teacher at the end of the Reception class in school. For most children their early learning will have included attending an early education place at a pre-school, day nursery or childminder before moving into school. In Suffolk 70.2% of children achieved a Good Level of Development (GLD) this year. This is slightly above the rest of England. The percentage of children eligible for free school meals achieving a GLD compared with those not eligible, has also improved this year. This means the gap between the groups has narrowed by 7% points.
launch a new road safety campaign this autumn, Be Safe and Seen in Suffolk. The campaign will see more than 12,000 badge reflectors given to primary school aged children, which can be worn on their coats or backpacks to reflect the beam of vehicles in darker conditions to ensure that children are seen as they walk with friends and parents. The idea and concept for the campaign was developed earlier this year through discussions with BBC Radio Suffolk. A design competition took place as part of the events and activities at this year’s Suffolk Show with the winning design selected from over 190 entries. A major part of undertaking this campaign was the determination to promote exercise, walking and physical activity amongst young people. It was understood that to achieve this, the children and their families needed to feel safe before stepping out during the darker months. So the reflector campaign was born!
It is particularly pleasing to note the improvement seen for children eligible for free school meals across the county. The results include a group of children who first received a free place at two years old rather than aged three, because their parents were eligible, for economic reasons. This national policy seems to be making a difference to the children whose families are less well off, because we can see they have achieved more compared to children with similar backgrounds who did not have a place at two in previous years.
The campaign is part of Suffolk’s Year of Walking which celebrates walking in Suffolk, promotes walking events and encourages new walking opportunities. Children are most active during the spring and summer months. An average of around 65 minutes of activity a day in April drops to around 48 minutes during the colder months of January and February. Staying active promotes physical and emotional wellbeing and it is important that young people stay active as there is emerging evidence that suggests links between physical activity and better academic attainment and attention.
All children, no matter their family circumstances, are entitled to free early education (childcare) from the term after their third birthday up until they start school full time.
Suffolk County Council’s Road Safety Team and Public Health Team have invested £9,550 into the campaign to deliver enough reflectors to benefit more than 60 primary schools across the county.
More information and details of how to apply can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/hshamr2
The campaign was officially launched at the Suffolk Show by Councillor James Finch and BBC Radio Suffolk at the beginning of June.

OUT & ABOUT SUFFOLK PHOENIX BRASS
DECEMBER AT KESGRAVE SOCIAL CLUB
This time of year gives the band the opportunity to play carols and raise funds for St Elisabeth’s Hospice, as we have done for many years.
Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve tickets are now on sale; members are £5 and £10, or both for £13.
Our main Christmas concert is at Raydon Church where we have played for 25 consecutive years, raising funds for repairs and improvements to the church. We have noticed the changes since we first played there in 1991. The first few times we performed at the church it had no heating and no toilet. With the help of our Christmas concerts it now has toilet facilities. No more going across the road to a parishioner’s house to use the loo! The church has been very supportive of the band over the years and we are looking forward to playing there again on Saturday, December 11. Since the first concert when we sat and shivered as we played, the membership has changed considerably with five different conductors. If you fancy joining our happy brass band visit www.suffolkphoenixbrass.co.uk or contact Bob on 01473 438821.
Saturday 3 we have The Real McCoy, a welcome return for this excellent group. Sunday 4 from 2-5pm is the Children’s Christmas Party with food, games, a disco and a visit from Santa with a small gift. Tickets (£5) available now. Foxy Rock Dancing is in the main hall on Sundays 4 and 18. There’s still time to learn some new moves for the new year, or to refresh your skills and make new dancing friends. The Heartbeat meeting is on Tuesday 6, all welcome for a 7pm start. The KSC Christmas Draw is on Friday 9 at 8pm with lots of prizes, including a £250 first prize. There’s still time to have a go – see the boards on the bar. Our C&W evening is on Saturday 10 with Darren Busby for what’s sure to be a great night with the hall decorated ready for Christmas. We have a quiz night on Wednesday 14; all welcome, teams of four. FINAL PUSH TO HIT CHARITY GOAL AS QUIZ NIGHT GETS FESTIVE MAKEOVER Regarded as one of the region’s biggest quiz events, local family run hearing care company, The Hearing Care Centre has announced details of their next event, this time with a Christmassy theme. The event, which is the company’s twelfth quiz fundraiser, is being held on Sunday, December 11 at Greshams Sports & Social Club on Tuddenham Road, Ipswich. Teams can include between four and six members and entry is only £5 with festive nibbles included. With generous support from local businesses there are cash prizes to be won for the top five teams, as well as a giant prize draw. All proceeds from the evening will be donated to deafness charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Karen Finch, managing director at The Hearing Care Centre, is a specialist in looking after patients with hearing difficulties. She says: “Hearing dogs give many deaf people confidence, independence and companionship. Being able to transform a deaf recipients life by sponsoring our very own hearing dog puppy will be invaluable. That’s why we have set ourselves a target of raising £10,000 for the charity in 2016. We’re hoping this fantastic evening out will be supported by locals and be the last push needed to reach this goal.” With an expected attendance of over 250 people, organisers are urging early booking to avoid disappointment. To purchase tickets call The Hearing Care Centre on 01473 230330 or visit: www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/quiz Dessert lovers in and around the Ipswich area gathered recently at The Swan in Westerfield to indulge at a charity fundraiser organised by The Hearing Care Centre with Suffolk pub company Deben Inns. Attendees were actively encouraged to sample every dessert on the menu with all proceeds from the event being donated to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. The evening raised an impressive £729.90 through ticket sales, donations, a raffle and taste-bud challenge which was held on the night. “I believe everyone who attended the event was fit to burst by the end, so it was a resounding success,” said Karen. “The support was overwhelming – we would like to thank the lovely team at The Swan, our many local sponsors and of course our wonderful guests for making the evening a memorable one”.

For over a decade, the East of England Co-op Funeral Services have brought people together at Christmas to celebrate and remember the lives of those close to them, who are no longer with us. This December, they will be hosting a number of carol concerts across the region, as well as collecting messages and memories to place on special ‘Trees to Remember’ at their funeral branches, raising money for local hospices. Andrew Dawes, Head of the East of England Co-op Funeral Services, said: “Having been supporting generations of local families for over 90 years, we understand that Christmas can be particularly difficult for those who have lost someone dear to them. “Tree to Remember is an important part of the ongoing support services we offer bereaved families in the local community. Our trees have collected thousands of memories of those who left a special mark on our lives. This Christmas we invite you to share your own message or memory, and look forward to welcoming you to one of our carol concerts or services.” The very first East of England Co-op funeral branch opened back in 1925 and there are now around 50 branches across the region. As a local, independent business they only operate in the Eastern region and are owned directly by their members. Because they are the local Co-op for the East of England, they work hard to support the community by helping local groups and initiatives as well as partnering with good causes and charities. This Christmas the East of England Co-op will be hosting a carol concert on Thursday 8th December at 7pm at the Bobby Robson suite at Ipswich Town Football Club. All are welcome to attend, with performances from the Ipswich and Norwich Co-op Band and the Love to Sing Community Choir. To book your place call 01473 257242.

KESGRAVE CO-OP WOMEN’S GUILD On October 18 we held our Harvest Supper with food provided by the committee. It was a social evening which involved our chairman acting as a bingo caller to determine the winners of the raffle and we all had time for a good chat and catch up with our friends. Mr Hopper entertained us on November 1 with his life as an engineer turned magician and paper sculptor. He presented some beautiful items he had made for various grand dinners of the Magician’s Circle and other charitable events. He also brought ideas for cards and place name settings and left the templates for those who fancy a dabble. On December 2 we will have our Christmas Lunch at Rushmere Golf Club where we enjoy the wonderful food prepared by Sean and his staff. November 29: Geo Fradgley will talk about John Constable’s determination to have his landscape painting accepted by the art world at that time. December 13: Our Christmas Party with the usual seasonal fare. This is our last meeting before Christmas and there will be time to give cards and presents and enjoy a fun evening. Tuesday, January 10: The annual Bag Beetle should prove to be the usual hilarious chaos as in previous years. Members are asked to bring a paper bag with two items worth a total of one pound and these are swapped as we play Beetle and a version of musical chairs at the same time. Tuesday, January 24: AGM and a talk by a solicitor from Fison & Co about the funny side of his work. We now have a website kindly hosted by One Suffolk: www.kesgravecoopwomensguild.onesuffolk.net Visitors are very welcome to join us for an evening. If you would like to find out more about the guild, please contact our chairman, Gloria Everett: 01473 614991

KESGRAVE WI Along with our table top show, our annual meeting was held as part of our November meeting. Wendy Jary, our advisor, joined us to assist with the business side of the meeting and reports of our activities during the past year were read and approved. All of the previous committee were re-elected with the addition of one new member, Lyn Parker. Monica Collins was elected to remain as president for 2017. The overall winner of our monthly competitions for the past year was Sue Hilling with Monica Collins in second place and Shirley Kendall third. Our bi-annual table top show was a great success with nearly 100 entries this year. This competition gives members the opportunity to show their skills at cooking and preserves, sewing and crafts, photography, flower arranging and vegetable growing. Responsibility for the organising of our show was taken by Enid Castle and Lyn Parker. Certificates were awarded to the winners of each of the 24 sections. Our next meeting at 7.15pm on Thursday, December 1 in Kesgrave Community Centre is our Christmas meeting. We will be entertained by a small group from the Kesgrave Singers who will lead us in a Christmas sing-a-long, after which we will enjoy a bring and share Christmas buffet. Visitors are very welcome to join us. For more information call our secretary, Di Chilver: 01473 611415

MARTLESHAM HEATH AVIATION SOCIETY Our meeting on Friday, November 4 featured an illustrated talk by one of our own members. David Empson demonstrated his enthusiastic and comprehensive knowledge in a talk entitled What Did Your Relative Do In The Great War?. In addition to a number of large storyboards depicting war heroes from Ipswich, David had brought along a large collection of medals dating back to the Crimea. These included a set of the iconic Pip, Squeak and Wilfred medals. These campaign medals were issued to men of the British Expeditionary Force who fought in that most horrific war. The first of these medals is the 1914-15 Star and was given to members of the Old Contemptibles who fought in France in 1914. When they were issued in the 1920s they were so called after a popular comic strip in the Daily Mirror. Members of the audience brought along various medals from their own families. A visitor from Stowmarket brought an Anzac commemorative medallion, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices from Australia and all the countries of the then British Empire which came to the assistance of the ‘mother country’. David’s command of his subject made for a most interesting evening and a vote of thanks was given by our chairman, Martyn Cook. John ‘Smudge’ Smith will deliver an illustrated talk entitled The History of Duxford on Friday, December 2 at the Community Hall on Felixstowe Road. Meetings start at 7.30pm with a tea/coffee break. OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS MARTLESHAM & KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOLS
December is a quiet time on the allotment. There are few remaining crops to be harvested and very little can be planted at this time of year. Winter cabbages can be harvested regularly, and Brussels sprouts should be picked frequently to ensure that the sprouts remain nice and tight. Leave parsnips and leeks in the ground until you need them – they should be fine. If you prefer them to sets, onion seeds can be sown in trays or pots towards the end of the year, ready to be planted out when the weather is warmer. The end of the year is fast approaching and now is the time to pore through those seed catalogues and dream of what next year can bring. Time spent preparing our garden tools for winter will pay dividends when we come to use them again: make sure they’re free from soil and mud, and wipe them down with an oily cloth to keep them sharp and prevent them rusting. Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas. Looking forward to seeing you on the allotment in 2017. If you’ve ever fancied growing your own, we do have a few plots available at our picturesque Rushmere St Andrew site. New members are always made very welcome. If you’re unsure if allotmenting is for you, we have small starter plots, or there are half and full-size plots if you’d prefer. PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP
We would like to thank all the parents who attended our AGM. We now have a new committee and thank the previous members for the work they completed over the last three years. Without the support of parents taking on a role in the committee our fantastic playschools could not continue. Thank you. Over the last few weeks the children have taken part in a variety of activities. We welcomed a lady who allowed the children to dress up in a range of traditional Indian clothing as well as taking part in some Bollywood dancing. I’m not sure who enjoyed it more, the staff or the children. Maybe it’s an idea for the adults as a fundraising night! We have also spent time exploring the natural world around us and how autumn is bringing change to the trees and woodland. The children loved climbing trees as well as learning about the constituent parts and what we call them. Our Kesgrave team have had their Ofsted Inspection and we are very pleased to say they received an overall ‘Good’. This ties in very nicely with them celebrating their second birthday on November 17. The full report can be seen at: www.reports.ofsted.gov.uk So looking forward, we are starting to think about our Christmas Nativity – wish us luck. Should you and your two to five year old wish to look around you are very welcome. We are now introducing sessions with lunch club added on, so if staying all day is too much your child can enjoy a three hour session and then an extra hour with a packed lunch before heading home. Please contact us (numbers below) and any of our fantastic staff will be happy to help. Charlotte, play manager
October’s Nature Watch Club meeting revolved around the subject of fungi. It included a ‘foray’ through the woods to identify species that had been learnt about. A great variety of shapes and sizes, colours and species were spotted, much to the interest of all involved. These included dead man’s fingers, common earth ball, several instances of bracket fungi and the oddly named turkey tail. Hopefully all of you who came along enjoyed yourselves.
Martlesham Playschool: Gorseland School, Deben Avenue, Martlesham IP5 3QR / 01473 625986
Recently two instances of concern have come to the attention of the group. Firstly, we would like to thank the quick-thinking walker who prevented someone from starting a fire in the woods, and remind everyone of the amazing space that the woods is and what it means to so many people. Causing damage to it only causes misery and deprives the community of somewhere that should be a place to relax and unwind. In the same vein, people have been spotted metal detecting in the woods which, besides being illegal, is destroying the protected status of the woods. We realise that not everyone knows this but it is very much appreciated if you can protect the woods in any way.
Christmas is coming and our pre-schoolers will be decorating the nursery, singing Christmas songs, dressing up in the Christmas Nativity and having fun and games at our Christmas party. After-school clubbers will be busy creating Christmas cards and decorations for us to use and to take home.

HUMPTY DUMPTY PLAYGROUP It’s certainly been very busy here at Humpty Dumpty Playgroup. To start the term, we dressed up and had a party for Halloween and created colourful paintings for Bonfire Night while talking about keeping safe. Thank you very much to Vrittika and her mummy Suchita Ande for coming in to talk to the children about Diwali and how it is celebrated in India. The children eagerly made Rangoli patterns and clay pots for their candles.
HEDGEHOG NURSERY AT GORSELAND SCHOOL Throughout November we have been learning about autumn and hibernation. We began by going on an autumn walk around the school grounds, where the children found lots of colourful leaves and conkers which we took back to the nursery. We made an autumn tray and used leaves to produce rubbings, pictures, paintings and collages. We also found out about animals that hibernate and focused in particular on hedgehogs. The children left a dish of cat food and water in the nursery garden for a few days and hoped that a passing, hungry hedgehog was grateful. We made hedgehog bread, read hedgehog stories, found out hedgehog facts and much more. We then learnt about fireworks and how to stay safe. We created sparkly pictures using splattered cotton wool balls and made pictures using marbles. Recently, we have been very busy learning our Christmas songs for our first nativity. We would like to thank Harriet’s mum, Emily, for her amazing skills in costume making. Everyone at Hedgehog Nursery would like to wish all of our families and friends a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in 2017. Facilities for hire at Gorseland School Gorseland School is lucky to have some excellent facilities in the form of a multi-use games area (MUGA), a large Astroturf pitch, a playground and a large indoor hall. These facilities are available for the benefit of the general public on weekday evenings and throughout school holidays for a very competitive fee. The facilities are currently used for after school clubs, sporting groups, Scout and Guiding groups, fitness classes and other one off events. Weekly, monthly or ad hoc bookings are all welcomed. Parking is available on site. For further information or to make a booking please contact the school office: 01473 623790 / office@gorseland.net
IPSWICH WANDERERS FC To support our People Who Help Us week, we would like to say a big thank you to paramedics Kim and Ali from the East of England Ambulance Service who came to visit the children. The children enjoyed being inside the ambulance and learning about the important work paramedics do to help people every day. On Wednesday, November 23, we held a BEEP BEEP day and wore bright colours to raise money for Brake, the road safety charity. Thank you very much to Disco Duck for coming to playgroup in your fluorescent jacket and helping the children to understand keeping safe while having lots of fun. Staff and Brake would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends who raised money by giving donations and supporting the raffle. The children are looking forward to their Christmas party. As they have all been such good children this year, Santa wrote them a letter and told them he will join them at their Christmas party and even bring presents! Sally, Wendy, Lorna, Laura, Sharon, Gemma and Helen would like to wish all our children and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you all for more fun and learning in 2017. We are situated inside Kesgrave Community Centre on Twelve Acre Approach. It has been a month of changes at The Doucy. A reshuffle of the off-field personnel sees the experienced David Bugg as the new chairman and academy director Tom Page takes over in the new position of managing director. Meanwhile, the 1st Team has had some encouraging results of late. Most notable were the League Cup win at Wivenhoe, who comprehensively beat us earlier in the season, and an impressive 4-2 away victory at Ely City. Wanderers currently sit in mid-table and manager Shane Wardley is confident that his team are making progress in the Thurlow Nunn League. New signing Danny Thrower, from Stanway Rovers, has made a quick impact in boosting the attack. Unfortunately, the arrival of ‘Percy’ has seen Matt Mackenzie move to Woodbridge Town. We wish him every success at his new club. As you read this, our FA Vase campaign will have begun with an away tie at FC Romania, a club based in Cheshunt. They are a side doing well near the top of the Essex Senior League so if Wanderers have won there, we will be looking forward to a third round tie. Home fixtures at The Doucy in December Tuesday, November 29: KO 7.45pm v Coggeshall Town (League Cup) Saturday, December 3: KO 3pm v Saffron Walden Town (League) Saturday, December 17: KO 3pm v Wivenhoe Town (League) Monday, January 2: KO 3pm v Mildenhall Town (League) For the latest club news and details of all Wanderers fixtures visit the club website. The Reserves are fourth in Division 4 with 13 points from their first 10 games. SUFFOLK FINALS FAMILY PODIUM HONOURS The Kesgrave Panthers Cycle Speedway Club continues to successfully grow its membership. In that respect, 2016 was the club’s most successful year ever. The aim of this local cycling club is to get youngsters out and on their bikes in a safe environment, to get fit and enjoy new friendships, and that is certainly what has been achieved. There is nothing better than seeing young boys and girls develop their cycling skills, particularly when they are brother and sister. It’s a family affair with Kesgrave’s Charlie Parr dominating to become the 2016 Suffolk U9 individual champion with his sister, Lily, taking third spot on the podium behind Magnus Vincent, also of Kesgrave. Charlie, who was Suffolk U8 champion in 2015, has had another successful year being a member of the Kesgrave U10 team which won the British Club championship at Wolverhampton Lily and Charlie Parr back in May, finishing third in both the U10 Eastern Individual championship and the South East U10 championship. Charlie entered the sport of cycle speedway in 2014 and is now nine years old and so will move up to the U10s in 2017. A determined Lily was defending a four point advantage entering the final round of the Suffolk GP series and put in an exceptional performance to finish a single point ahead of a hard charging Oliver Baker, also from Kesgrave. Lily was delighted to win her first trophy which she has followed up by winning a second trophy by finishing fourth in the South East U8 championship. Lily also began racing in 2014 and has just turned seven years old and so will continue as an U8 next year. Cycle Speedway is a summer sport that starts up again towards the end of March. So until then, Happy Christmas. Graham Wright

SPORT KESGRAVE & NORTHGATE KARATE NEWS It’s been an incredibly busy time in the run up to the end of the year for the teams at Northgate Karate and I can only apologise if there any competitors I miss in the write up. Well done to everyone who competed at the EKKA Championship at Northgate Sports Centre on Sunday, October 16. A great standard was shown in both kumite and kata. The fighters were sharp with the Japanese kata looking better at each competition. Well done to those who have only been working on this discipline for a short period of time. Congratulations to the following: Thomas Humphries for a bronze medal in Korean kata; Emma Buckley and Lilly Melton for silver medals in team kata; Chloe Campbell and Lola Blowfield for bronze medals in Japanese team kata; and Chloe who took silver in individual Japanese kata. Once again there was great support from family and friends. Many thanks to Gerry Turner for both your support at the event and the report. At the ELITE Karate Open Championship in Walthamstow on Sunday, October 23, there was a gold medal for Ruby Hunt in kumite and joint bronze for all the Japanese team kata girls: Amelia Clow and Sophie Swann; Lilly Melton and Emma Buckley. Lilly also won a bronze medal in the individual Japanese kata. Sunday, November 6 was a fantastic day at the I.K.G.A. Invitational Kata Competition in Southend. There were some brilliant results and a fabulous supportive team spirit. Well done everyone who competed. In the individual kata, Lauren Berry won a gold, Daisy Hopwood silver and Oliver Currie and Jess Etherington took bronze medals. In the pairs kata, Chloe Campbell and Daisy Hopwood won gold, with silvers for Emma Buckley and Lilly Melton and also Amelia Clow and Sophie Swann, and finally there were bronzes for Joe Tully and Oliver Currie. Particular congratulations must go to the three Red Dragons – Lauren, Joe and Oliver – who are all only six years old. It was the first competition they had ever entered and they all came away with medals. And finally there were some great results for our older teenage club members. Oscar Hunt came away from the Polish International Open with a bronze medal and there was a gold medal for Georgie Lawson. Meanwhile, Taylor Evans has been racking up her medal haul at an impressive rate with gold medals at both the EKF English Nationals and the British International and a silver medal at the British Four Nations.
Oscar Hunt, Taylor Evans and Georgina Lawson A fantastic achievement for all of them and a real inspiration to the young competitors coming up behind them. Kesgrave, Northgate and Associated Clubs have gone from strength to strength over the past year and thanks have to go to not only our sponsors M+C Diesel Services, I.S Electricals and Chris Clow who continue to support the competitors as they travel around Britain and further afield, but also to our fantastic instructors who push club members to achieve their full potential, helping them to achieve goals and build self esteem. Why not see what all the buzz is about in January? Start a new pastime and join our karate family. Classes are held throughout the week at schools and sports centres. Details of class times and locations can be found at: www.northgate-karate.co.uk. You can also follow us on Twitter at: northgateassociatedkarateclubs Eleanor Legg

CHURCH NEWS REMEMBER, REMEMBER
the
ARK church
Crikey! Christmas is almost upon us and hasn’t it come around quick. In this holiday season it’s time to remember what Christmas is really all about and the clue is in the word itself – Christ Mass, the time we celebrate the birth of a child born to save the world from itself. It is the proclaiming of the good news brought to earth through a tiny child, news that mankind wasn’t a lost cause and was amazingly, deeply loved by God, loved enough to die for. When you open your presents on Christmas morning just spare a thought for the reason for the season, Jesus, the gift that keeps on giving. The Ark family wishes you a happy, joyful Christmas and a bright, prosperous New Year.
We have just celebrated Bonfire Night and commemorated Remembrance Sunday. Remembering is all about not forgetting something. In the case of these two events, it’s about not forgetting the past. By marking these historical events we hope they will not be forgotten by future generations. Remembering can also be about not forgetting family birthdays, anniversaries or appointments. In church we have ways to help us remember the past too. In our church we hold a monthly Family Communion celebration to remind us of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The Bible encourages us to bless God and to not forget a single blessing. If you would like to find out more about our good God, please come and see us. We meet every Sunday from 10.30am-noon in Heath Primary School, Bell Lane, Kesgrave.
Join us on Sunday, December 18 for our Christmas Service from 11am and Sunday mornings throughout the year at 11.30am (Café & Children’s Church at 10.30am), for Wednesday Bible Study at 8pm or Young People’s Night on alternate Fridays (see website for details).
