A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I hate winter! There, I’ve said it. I’ve tried to appreciate the positives but I spend every long dark evening longing for spring, which for me starts on February 11. For this reason I love Christmas; it gives us something to look forward to and brings family and friends together with time to relax. Of course it can be an expensive time and requires a huge amount of planning, but somehow it’s always worth it. So bring it on I say! Let’s embrace this time to relax and to enjoy the company of those we may not see as regularly as we’d like. This year I’m determined to make Auntie Mary smile, even if I have to spend all day working on it. I’m going to find the perfect non-gift for the impossible aunt who says she doesn’t want or need anything, until she doesn’t get anything of course. I’m going to make the bread sauce nobody eats just so my brother can’t complain that it’s not the same without it! I’m going to discuss the timings with absolutely everyone so nobody comes to the table saying ‘I wish I’d know we were eating this early as I wouldn’t have had that fifth mince pie for breakfast’. I’m going to serve custard, brandy butter, ice cream and cream with the Christmas pudding so mum, my husband, my brother and my nephew have no cause to complain, and for those who always say ‘I don’t really like Christmas pudding’ I shall be serving chocolate mousse. My approach to Christmas present shopping has changed over the years. Where once I might have spent hours online looking for something unusual or quirky, this year I’m focused on finding more thoughtful gifts; this requires a hands-on approach so it’s local shops and markets for me this year. I’m taking the same approach with my son. We’ve been influenced by TV ads for the latest gadgets and plastic monstrosities in the past; recent mistakes include Boom Boom Balloon Game, Chippies Robot Dog, Zoomer Dino Robot Dinosaur and Hot Wheels Ultimate Garage. This year I’m determined to find things I know he will enjoy well into 2019 and I’ll be having a word with Father Christmas too. I hope this month doesn’t cause unnecessary stress in your home. Please do support local businesses and local markets in the coming weeks and together we can look forward to a Happy New Year.

WE WILL REMEMBER Staff and trustees of Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre (KWMCC) organised a small gathering on Monday, November 12 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. Regular hirers and members of The East Anglian Reserve were invited to the centre for the unveiling of a commemorative half tree bench with plaque to remember those who lost their lives. The bench, commissioned by KWMCC and funded by District Councillor Stuart Lawson from the Enabling Communities budget, has been placed in the garden area around the oak tree for visitors to take time to sit and reflect, while children from the centre’s resident play group, Humpty Dumpty, created a fabulous display of homemade poppies made especially for the occasion. District Councillor Stuart Lawson said: “I am honoured to have funded this special bench, set in a lovely peaceful area of the garden where visitors can sit and take time to remember the sacrifices made by so many. Well done to all those involved in this commemorative initiative.” Refreshments were provided, along with a brief welcome from Richard Baird, chair of KMWCC’s Board of Trustees, followed by a talk on the end of the war by Don Whinney from Kesgrave Royal British Legion. The unveiling of the bench was performed by The East Anglia Reserves in full uniform accompanied by The Last Post played by local buglers Andy Gaffer and Neville Woolnough, followed by the two-minute silence. MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM SPARK

KESGRAVE TOWN COUNCIL Kesgrave Fireworks Wow, what a display! The event held on Monday, November 6 at Kesgrave High school was attended by over 2,000 people. A huge thanks to Councillor Debbie McCallum from the Bell Inn who arranged this event and all her volunteers and sponsors. Police Surgery December 5 and 19 at the town council office from 1-2pm. Installation of the Beacon at Legion Green took place at the end of October. Many thanks to TRU GRAB from Kesgrave who helped install the 11-foot structure. Also, many thanks to E M Jacobs & Son at Kirton for making the beacon; it was great to be able to use a local firm. The beacon was lit for the first time on Remembrance Sunday as part of the Nation’s Tribute – The Battle’s Over. Remembrance Event Kesgrave Town Council in partnership with the Royal British Legion held a Remembrance Service on Friday, November 9. Four local schools attended and also a local nursery, along with Martlesham Brass and bugle player Adam Cable.

SPARK (Sport Amenities and Recreation in Kesgrave) and the 2nd Stop Charity Shop would like to wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It has been another bumper year for the 2nd Stop Shop and the efforts of its managers past and present (who have been with the shop during our 19 years) and their willing volunteers are very much appreciated as, of course, are your donations and the loyalty of our customers. Without all of you, Spark just this year alone would not have been able to make grants of £63,000 to more than 24 local clubs and organisations to assist them with their projects. Spark trustees would like to welcome our new young enthusiastic fulltime manager, Lyndsay, and hope she will enjoy her time in the shop which will carry on as long as you all support it. Please continue to volunteer, donate good quality saleable items and, of course, pop in to our friendly charity shop for a look around for unbeatable bargains from our very well-stocked shelves. The full list of grants/loans awarded is displayed on the 2nd Stop Charity Shop door. Finally, if you think SPARK could help your Kesgrave based club/ organisation please visit: www.kesgrave.org.uk/spark

MARTLESHAM SURGERY – Practice & Patient Group (PPG) News

As a result of our recent recruitment campaign, we have been very pleased to welcome a new patient member. In addition, we have a ‘virtual’ group who contribute via email. If you are interested in joining either group, please leave your details with reception (marked ‘FAO PPG’) or email: MartPPG@gmx.com We are pleased to let you know that Martlesham Surgery now has two doctors on duty every day, Monday-Friday. They are: Dr Walter Tobias (four days) Dr Robert James (one day) Dr Hubert Lilliveld (four days) Dr Paul Bethell (one day) In addition, Jan Hinton, our nurse practitioner, is available on three days per week. We have two practice nurses, Helen and Angela, who cover the five days between them, plus two health care assistants, Lorraine and Donna, who do the same. After a long period of uncertainty, this is welcome news. But before we all get too excited, it should be noted that the practice is still under-resourced compared with national standards. This is becoming the norm due to a national shortage of GPs and doctors in general. We are very grateful for the time and effort our doctors put in on our behalf. If you have an appointment you can’t make, it will help others if you can let the surgery know as soon as possible, so your appointment slot can be released for someone else. If you are registered for online access, you can cancel and make appointments online.

I would like to thank you for supporting the work we have been doing to celebrate this wonderful town we live in. Over the year we have organised and completed many projects and events, and I would like to thank the office and support staff for all the work they have done over the year at this challenging time. Wishing you all the best for 2019 and I look forward to seeing you at lots of events during the year. Christmas Opening Hours The office will be closed from Monday, December 24 until Wednesday, January 2. The answerphone will be checked for any urgent messages. BUS NOTES I’d like to take this opportunity to wish First’s bus drivers the compliments of the season, particularly those who work on our local 68, who are a cheerful and friendly bunch. Happy Christmas to you all. It has been encouraging to see a steady increase in the usage of this route, which, being purely local, runs well to the timetable. I haven’t noted a full bus load yet, but numbers have been growing, hopefully sufficiently to convince First to keep it going in the next round of service revisions. It’s a valuable service for Kesgrave’s population of advanced years: it is not subsidised and is dependent on its patronage for ongoing provision. Please use it to help it survive. Happy Wanderer

NEWS

The Battle’s Over Beacon Lighting Community Event – Centenary of the Ending of the First World War After months in the planning we are pleased to report that the event on Sunday, November 11 was a resounding success with hundreds of people, young and old, from the parish coming along to help us commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War. The children (and some adults!) enjoyed their gift bags filled with chocolate farthings, flags, lights, glow sticks, bookmarks and room to put their lanterns made with the help of 51st Ipswich Scout Group in the crafts corner. The Orwell Singers led a rousing sing-along of old First World War songs and spirits were lifted on a cold night with Parkers hog roast, hot drinks and free candyfloss and popcorn. All ages enjoyed looking around the exhibition of local First World War history with such knowledgeable exhibitors and a First World War soldier (re-enacted) in full uniform explaining to everyone what it was like in the trenches, which was especially enjoyed by the children. The Remembrance itself was very poignant with words, a prayer and a reading of the names of those who gave their lives in the First World War by Rev Heather Marsden from Rushmere Baptist Church (pictured), followed by The Last Post and a twominute silence. After the welcome and a few thanks from Councillor James Wright, the winners of the Broke Hall School competition to design a First World War Bookmark (Caitlin Garrard and Kara Bassil) were introduced by Councillor Robert Whiting as they lit the Beacon at 7pm, along with the rest of the nation. With all the lights shining from the finger lights switched on by everyone, Rushmere St Andrew really was a beacon of light, signifying the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war. Councillors Robert Whiting and James Wright are pictured with Caitlin Garrard, Kara Bassil and Councillor John Westrup (right to left). For photographs and further details of the event please visit: www.rushmerestandrew.onesuffolk.net A significant amount of money was raised on the night for Help the Heroes. We will let you know how much in the next edition. Thank you to everyone who came along to the event and to those whose hard work made it happen and, of course, to those who gave their lives in the First World War.

The staff and trustees at Kesgrave Community and Conference Centre would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. Kesgrave Catwalk Success Kesgrave Community Centre was completely transformed for its first Kesgrave Catwalk fashion show organised by KWMCC and hosted by Pam Davis, director of Fashion Candy Style. Sound 4 Pro Audio set up wonderful lighting and sound, along with a fabulous catwalk for the models to showcase the latest outfits on offer from a selection of local retailers. The event was very well attended and featured a raffle for the Papworth Trust, raising over £300 for the charity on the night. Business & Events Co-ordinator Jo Barker said: “It was such a special evening, with a great atmosphere. We have received very positive feedback about the event and are already planning another one for next year. The centre looked amazing, while the catwalk show hosted by Pam and her team of models and retailers was fantastic. A great big thank you to everyone involved in the event and to those who bought tickets. We were very pleased to be able to support the Papworth Trust with a raffle on the night and we look forward to the next one.” Ticket holders were able to enjoy an evening of exclusive shopping (before and after the show) with Prosecco and canapes followed by a one-hour catwalk show. Catwalk collections were provided by local retailers Cake & Catwalk, Zeebra Chic, Simply Splendid, Tilley & Grace and Maud’s Attic. Special thanks to the event sponsors Kesgrave Cars, Sound 4 Pro Audio, Let’s Party and Polstead Press. This year the centre has been the chosen venue for a variety of events, parties, celebrations, meetings and conferences, from filming for a new reality show with Chris and Kem of Love Island fame, to the Headway Neuro Conference with headline speakers Prof Robert Winston and Jane Hawking, followed by the Kesgrave Catwalk fashion show. Set in twelve acres of land and close to Ipswich town centre, the venue for all occasions and events is conveniently located within easy access to the A12 and A14 routes. Kesgrave Community Centre makes an ideal location, offering a choice of function rooms, fully licensed bar, two large free car parks, an attractive enclosed garden, flexible catering options and hospitality upon request. If you are planning a celebration or event, the team at KWMCC would be happy to discuss your requirements however large or small. The centre’s own health and fitness activities will continue up until the Christmas break, commencing once again in January 2019. A full list of activities and events can be found on the website. Premier Sport Holiday Camps will be taking place on December 20 and 21; you can book your place now via: https://book.premier-education.com For further information about KWMCC activities and events or to book a function room, please contact the centre on 01473 612648 or visit: www.kwmcc.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT KESGRAVE CO-OP GUILD Mrs Everett welcomed Rod Gibson, the chair of Kesgrave Neighbourhood Plan, to a recent meeting. A Neighbourhood Plan is a way of helping local communities to influence the planning of the area in which they live and work. Rod explained that we all need to be involved in this because the plan can be used to develop a shared vision for our neighbourhood. It can be used to help choose where new homes, shops, offices and other development should be built and to identify and protect important local green spaces and influence what new buildings should look like. The committee are gathering residents’ ideas and opinions and the draft plan will be sent to everyone for their comments. After this talk we enjoyed the Harvest Supper provided by our committee members.

CHRISTMAS FAIR AT CEDARWOOD Saturday, December 8, 2-4.30pm Santa’s Sleigh will leave Cedarwood at 4.30pm for its usual route around Grange Farm. Free admission with many fun activities for both children and adults to enjoy including Reindeer Nose Hoopla, Pluck a Turkey, Lucky Carrot Dip, Which Santa Hat?, Santa Experience, face painting, a grand draw, refreshments and lots more!

On Tuesday, October 30, Terry Mackley entertained members with music and songs from the 1920s to the 1950s. He performed songs by Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hart, and also told us about the development of the musicals and big bands in the USA and here. Many of the songs had stood the test of time and were still popular today. It was a lovely evening of melodies and memories.

IPSWICH AND KESGRAVE BRIDGE CLUB CELEBRATES 60 YEARS 2018 was the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Ipswich Bridge Club. Since 1958 the club has had a number of homes including the Great White Horse and Westerfield House. We now play at Kesgrave Community Centre which explains our slightly longer name. To celebrate the diamond jubilee the club staged two special events. The first (in July) was a play and learn session, with lunch, when we were joined by two world champions, Sally Horton and Kate McCallum. Club members played against the experts and after lunch our visitors gave us great insights using the hands we had played in the morning. For the second (in September) we held our largest Swiss pairs event for which we had 60 pairs enter – it attracted people from all over East Anglia including a couple who have played for the England Senior Team. Everyone who attended agreed that both events were great fun and enjoyed the fantastic food. If you are a Bridge player and this sounds like the sort of club you would like to join, you can find out more by visiting or website or contacting Chris Green at: greencj06@hotmail.co.uk www.bridgewebs.com/ipswich

PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP The latest volunteer working party met on a gorgeous morning in midOctober. The group of volunteers were split into two halves, with one continuing to clear the southern tumulus of vegetation and the other half adding more bark chippings to the paths to keep them from getting overly muddy. It was fantastic to see so many people spending time in Portal Woodlands – families, dog walkers, cyclists and runners were all enjoying the sunny but still crisp and chilly autumn morning. The Portal Woodlands Conservation Group was formed as a working group of Martlesham Parish Council in November 1999 to conserve the woodlands which lie west of the Suffolk Police HQ and alongside the A1214. Volunteers meet each month to work on a variety of projects to encourage wildlife, preserve historic features and keep the woods accessible to people. If you can spare an hour or two do feel free to come along, details below. Further to our recent theft, one item of particular note that was taken is a model of a small child. This is quite distinctive and unique, so if you happen to see it turn up anywhere please let us know so that we can advise the police to help them track down the perpetrators. DATES FOR THE DIARY Volunteer Work Morning (all ages) Sunday, December 16, 10am-noon Meet at the Education Area Tools, training and light refreshments provided All welcome; no need to book Nature Watch Club (ages 5-11) Sunday, December 16, 9.30-11am Christmas creative activity – please send an email to book a place Nature Explorers (ages 11-18) Saturday, January 19, 9-11am. SCHOOLS / CHURCH NEWS HUMPTY DUMPTY PLAYGROUP At 11am on Friday, November 9, the children from Humpty Dumpty Playgroup joined in with local schools and the Kesgrave community to pay their respects at Legion Green for Remembrance Day. The children had made a wreath of poppies which was laid carefully amongst the other poppy wreaths. We were incredibly proud of how the children took interest in the ceremony and listened well. The children have also painted 100 poppies to represent 100 years since the end of the First World War, which you can see cascading down one of the trees in the memorial gardens of Kesgrave Community Centre. We currently have spaces, so please feel free to contact Wendy (details below) or pop in for a chat with our friendly Early Years team, where we have two qualified teachers and all other staff are CACHE qualified level 3/4. We are an Ofsted registered childcare provider for children from the age of two years onwards. As we are registered as ‘Good’, we can provide funded places for two-year-old children who have received ‘Golden Tickets’ from Suffolk County Council. We offer 30 hours of free childcare to children who are eligible the term after their third birthday, allowing your child to be in the setting from 9am to 3.30pm, and we have signed up with HM Government to offer Taxfree Childcare as parents are no longer able to join an employer childcare voucher scheme. HEDGEHOG NURSERY AT GORSELAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Hedgehog Nursery have been having so much fun exploring mixing different colours in the painting area, in the water trays and with chalks to great effect! The children have been following a step-by-step picture recipe card to make their own shortbread biscuit on their own. They were delicious. We exploded, popped, whizzed and banged our way through November the fifth and then changed gear to become peaceful and learn about how important the poppy is. We are looking forward to getting underway with our nativity and inviting our families for Christmas fun. We are also catching the walking Polar Express to Martlesham Square to post our special letters to a special someone in the North Pole. If you would like to visit and see us in action, please contact the school office on 01473 623790; you will be warmly welcomed! Nursery Lead Teacher Mrs Haig

THE SAPLINGS What a fabulous time we have been having! We loved hosting the spooky pumpkin walk and were overwhelmed by the support from the parents. The children decorated cakes, made mummies, played with spooky play dough, spent time in the pumpkin fairy garden and had glitter tattoos before we headed off to our enchanted walk through the woods where we found characters on each corner who filled our bags with special treats. It really was a magical afternoon. We have enjoyed learning about fireworks and fire safety and made special hand print poppies for Remembrance. We are now looking forward to the Christmas term ahead. The children have made special Christmas cards which have been sent to be professionally printed as a gift for their family. Everyone is welcome to our Christmas Fete on Saturday, November 24 from 2-4pm. We are currently taking bookings for January for the baby room, twoyear-old and funded three-four-year-old places. To book a visit please call: 01473 614753 There are also limited spaces available for our Birchwood Primary School walking bus and Bealing Primary School collection.

As we see another year draw to a close I, for one, wonder where the time has gone. It seems like only a few short weeks ago we were celebrating the New Year and now another is looming. For Christians the birth of Jesus is a major event in the church calendar. A child born in lowly circumstances, growing up just as other children, becoming an adult, but then going on to change the world. He was just like us and knew the sorrows of humanity but rose above it to show us the way to a better, more fulfilled life. It is well known that Jesus was not actually born on December 25, but scholars are unsure whether it was spring, summer, but more probably autumn. Even the exact year is not known, but could be up to seven years earlier in 7BC. Whatever the actual date was, celebrating the birth of the One who came to save us should be a daily activity. Come and join us on Sunday, December 16 for our Christmas Service at 11am (no Sunday School); you’ll be more than welcome! SEE YOU ON SUNDAY! Join us on Sunday mornings at 11.30am (Adult and Children’s Sunday Schools 10.30am) at The Ark Church, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR. You can contact us via email at arkipswichuk@gmail.com. We can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter @arkipswich or online at www.arkipswich.co.uk where you will find up-to-date information on what’s happening at the Ark each week.

CHURCH NEWS

BIXLEY FARM CHURCH AT TOWER HALL: SUNDAY@4 As autumn heads towards winter we have several events and activities planned, before, dare we mention the word… Christmas! Each year it seems to come around more quickly. Together with our partner MIE churches, we support the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal. Its mission is to show God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world, and together with the local church worldwide to share the good news of Jesus Christ. As you read this, thousands of boxes will have been filled across Suffolk and are making their way to different countries where children, many who are living in grinding poverty, running for their lives from war or living with the effects of natural disaster, will have something to cheer about in the midst of troubled lives. We are also excited to be working alongside St Augustine’s Church to organise the Broke Hall Carols on the Green on Saturday, December 8 at 3pm by Penshurst Road shops. This is an event that has been running for several years and has proved very popular with the local community. If you enjoy carolling then come and join us around Bixley Farm on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 13 December. It’s great fun and lovely to see children and families come to watch. Please feel free to join in the singing and enjoy some mulled wine afterwards. We try to visit different areas of Bixley Farm, but always start at 7.30pm from Tower Hall. For further details please contact the MIE office as below. Our Carol Service will be on Sunday, December 16 at 4pm and our Nativity Service on Sunday 23, also at 4pm. Christmas means different things to people depending on their circumstances. It can spark the happiest of memories or the saddest. It can also feel very lonely. At this time of great political uncertainty and change, come along and join us and be reminded that God’s love for us never changes. As always, everyone is welcome to join us each Sunday for our regular weekly service at Tower Hall from 4-5pm. There are opportunities to speak to clergy or other members of the church, with time for personal prayer at the end. Holy Communion is celebrated every other Sunday. Bixley Farm Church (CofE) was initiated by St John’s, Cauldwell Hall Road and St Andrew’s, Britannia Road (collectively called Mission Ipswich East). For further information/questions visit: 01473 270978 / www.mie.org/bixley or contact: office@mie.org.uk

Declaring God’s Way - Sharing His Love What beautiful days we are still having in spite of it being November, with gorgeous colours on the trees and shrubs around the countryside. The leaves haven’t all dropped yet and we can still enjoy the late signs of autumn which seems to being going on much longer than in previous years. As we have been remembering the 100-year anniversary of the ending of the First World War, we have been reminded of how grateful we all are for the freedom we enjoy today. Now as we look forward to the Christmas season we are reminded once again of why we celebrate Christmas. God sent his only son into the world as a tiny baby so that we may realise his great love for us.
