A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Mother Nature is having quite an impact on my life right now, mostly positive, but not entirely! I’m looking after grandma’s chickens for a few days while she’s away. It’s not difficult: put them in, let them out, give them some grain… job done. Except not this time! Last night one of them went missing and I found myself clucking around the garden for about an hour in torrential rain trying to find her. I can only image how ridiculous I looked but I most certainly wasn’t laughing. Of course I didn’t find her so spent a restless night wondering how to tell grandma that Blossom was done for. When I went to let the others out this morning, there she was waiting for me in all her glory, perfectly dry, well-rested and seemingly happy. A bit too happy for my liking! Meanwhile, back at home a mummy blackbird (I’ve called her Maralyn because she’s very beautiful) has taken up residence under the roof of our little outdoor lean-to, a place I like to sit with a book when the weather allows. She’s busily feeding four babies, constantly flying back and forth all day long. I must say I admire/envy her energy and it is a rather beautiful thing to see, but she’s making my garden a no-go area as every time I open the door she abandons her chicks and sits on the wall until I leave. I imagine she’s sitting there muttering “here she comes again… what is it this time… can’t she see I’m busy… what is she wearing?”. I end up feeling guilty for invading ‘her’ space so I retreat indoors and leave her to it. I haven’t even put the bins out this week because I’m afraid to scare her away. How would I cope with four baby blackbirds? Not very well I suspect. I don’t suppose she and her babies will be there for very long and despite the inconvenience (and the mess, but let’s not go there right now) I’m glad we have given them a safe place to hatch. I do love living in the countryside. Even those of us who live in Suffolk towns and villages are never far from a wide open space and a big sky view. We really are incredibly lucky and when better weather lands, as surely it must, I hope you have the opportunity and the means to get about to explore or simply admire our surroundings. You may not have to go very far, unless your garden is out of bounds too!

NEWS A TRIPLE CELEBRATION FOR HOME-START IN SUFFOLK Local charity Home-Start in Suffolk staged their fourth annual Snowflake Ball fundraiser on Friday 17 May at the Hanger at Milsoms, Kesgrave Hall and sponsored by Ufford Park Hotel. With record attendance, the event extravaganza treated more than 200 guests to a fun filled evening. The impressive sum of £26,880 was raised to help support vulnerable families in the Suffolk community. Coinciding with the charities 20th anniversary, guests had the opportunity to win one of 20 amazing prizes including afternoon tea for two at the Shard. In addition, the charity’s hugely successful auction saw some astounding bids on some amazing items including wonderful works of art, a collection of special edition books signed by best-selling author Anthony Horowitz OBE and a holiday to a beautiful St Ives property with stunning sea views. The evening was hosted by Tara Somers, CEO of Home-Start in Suffolk, and Tim Holder, Development Director of Suffolk Community Foundation. Anthony Horowitz OBE, the new patron for Home-Start in Suffolk, was announced mid-evening, with a specially filmed video explaining why he is passionate about supporting the charity. His message was clear: “I love that Home-Start in Suffolk brings their amazing network of volunteers from all over Suffolk, giving up their time, providing support and friendship where it really matters, inside the community and inside people’s homes, becoming not just their helpers but their friends.” To kick start Home-Start’s 20th anniversary celebrations the Platinum Challenge was unveiled, an opportunity for local businesses to support the charity by sponsoring a year and pledging to raise £1,000 over the year through a variety of fundraising activities. 2016 was the first year to be sponsored by Liddy Pheasant of Stubborn Mule Travel with five others snapped up within minutes. Tara Somers, CEO of Home-Start in Suffolk, said: “The Snowflake Ball has exceeded all our expectations and has achieved so much not only in terms of fundraising revenue which will be used to fund recruitment and training for more fully trained volunteers, but it was a chance to remind people what we do at Home-Start and how hard we work for families with children in the Suffolk Community, providing support and professional friendship at a time it is needed.” Home-Start continues to look for volunteers from the Suffolk Community or those who may be interested in holding an event on behalf of the organisation. We still have a few of our Platinum Challenge years available for sponsor so if your organisation would like to get involved or for more information please contact us at: ali@homestartinsuffolk.org / 01473 621104
COFFEE MORNINGS AT KESGRAVE HELP CENTRE A group of 36 people recently enjoyed a very successful visit to Felixstowe. We travelled by coach from Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre and arrived at The Hut in time for morning coffee. As it was such a beautiful, sunny day, many enjoyed a walk along the promenade, taking in the Spa Gardens which were looking at their best. Our walk had given us a good appetite so we returned to The Hut for a fish and chip lunch. With the sun still shining, many chose to sit and enjoy the sunshine, watching people as they passed by on the promenade. Others preferred to take another walk and sit in the gardens. We finished the afternoon with tea and cake before setting off home. Thanks were expressed to the organisers and volunteers, and to the coach driver and providers of the fish and chips. Particular thanks this year go to Councillor Stuart Lawson and East Suffolk Council who awarded us £550 through the Enabling Communities Budget Scheme. We are extremely grateful for the grant that funded transport to and from Felixstowe and a very enjoyable day at the seaside, with lunch and tea included.

NEWS KESGRAVE TOWN COUNCIL Due to the weather forecast, Kesgrave Fun Day was cancelled. With predicted gusts of winds up to 50mph, the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors and volunteers was paramount. We will be back in 2020!
Beacon Event Legacy Tree planting and time capsule burial at Broke Hall Primary School “This has been a great community-based project for the whole of the parish of Rushmere St Andrew from start to finish and it is extremely gratifying that there will be an enduring legacy at Broke Hall Primary School.” County Councillor Robert Whiting On 11 March this year, Year 5 pupils gathered together on Broke Hall Primary School playing field to plant 100 small trees with the help of James Baker from The Greenways Project. Over the next two months Year 5 collected and produced items and work, including a day in the life of a headteacher written by Mrs Barr, and put them into a time capsule. On the morning of 23 May, Year 5 pupils and staff, and Rushmere St Andrew Parish Councillors gathered together to see the time capsule put into the ground by Mr J Chisnall, the school’s caretaker, who is retiring this summer after 43 years at the school. Two of the children then uncovered a special plaque to mark the occasion. The time capsule will be dug up in 30 years’ time when it is hoped that the children of our current pupils will be attending the school. Many thanks are due to all the people who worked to create and organise this activity, especially the members of the Beacon Working Party, Councillors Mark Newton, Robert Whiting and Deborah Dean who funded all of this from the grants they kindly provided from their Enabling Communities Budgets of East Suffolk Council and also to those who organised the Beacon Legacy at Broke Hall Primary School, especially Assistant Parish Clerk Mrs Sarah Jenkins and Parish Councillor James Wright.
A large recycling bin will be installed outside Kesgrave High School. The bin has been supplied with thanks to East Suffolk Councillor Debbie McCallum from her Enabling Budget and County Councillor Stu Lawson’s locality budget. East Suffolk Council has awarded funding to Kesgrave Town Council as part of the Town Centre Clean Up Fund. The money is being spent on the refurbishment of the large planters in Rupert Fison Square. The first stage of the works started on 1 June. Councillor Alan Comber arranged for volunteers to come along and empty the planters and replace the wicking for future watering. The next stage is to repaint and then replenish with plants. Senior Citizens Outing The popular senior citizens outing to Felixstowe is on Monday 19 August; booking forms available from the town council office or the 2nd Stop Shop from Monday 24 June. BUNTING AND STRAWBERRY JAM Take one sunny day, medium warm, and settle it over a local hall, garden or school with a sprinkling of organisers and volunteers, stalls and tables. Add pretty bunting and a well-stocked table of homebaked cakes, biscuits and treats; prepare an urn of boiling water and cream teas served, preferably, on china. Surround by stalls stacked with interesting items such as pre-loved books, curious but necessary white elephants and, of course, locally crafted hand-made bags, patterned one-off sunhats, turned wooden bowls, dibbers and beehomes, prize-winning crochet-work and knitwear, bead jewellery and accessories, lovely cards by local artists. A table of home-made preserves, chutneys and delicious new summer-fruit jams adds depth. A local celebrity, brass band, a raffle, tombola, and a coconut shy and games can be mixed in for extra excitement. At the appointed time, fill the area with large numbers of neighbours, friends and families and allow to circulate gently for a few hours, stirring occasionally. Allow to empty and cool: encourage cheerfully satisfied volunteers, stall-holders and organisers to tidy up and put away the few remaining items. Experience the joy of the new 2019 fruit harvest as a luscious jam or preserve on your bread, toast, scone, waffle or in your yogurt of choice. Don’t miss the chance to stock up at our weekly Country Market, every Tuesday from 9.15-11am at Martlesham Heath Pavilion, where you will find a friendly welcome. Bring your friends, family and neighbours to meet your Country Market producers at the Birchwood School PTFA Summer Fair, Martlesham Heath, Saturday 22 June, and see our makers and bakers again at Three Bears Playgroup in Kesgrave on Saturday 29 June. What bargains and treats will you find there?

OUT & ABOUT KESGRAVE CO-OP WOMEN’S GUILD On Tuesday 14 May, Mike Rines gave an interesting talk on the world beating businesses we have in our area. He spoke about the boatyard in Woodbridge, a recording studio used by famous stars and many more firms which supply the international market. Sarah Waterson from The Hunnaball Family Funeral Group gave a lighthearted but informative presentation on the changing face of funerals on Tuesday 28 May. She explained the various processes and options and urged everyone to plan their funeral in advance to help those left behind. We are now taking names for our three events arranged for the summer: Tuesday 16 July: a fish and chip lunch at the Felixstowe Hut Tuesday 20 August: a mystery tour followed by afternoon tea Friday 13 September: a coach trip to the Cambridge American Cemetery followed by a visit to a large garden centre and shopping area nearby. NEXT MEETINGS Tuesday 9 July: David Murton will take us for a fascinating insight into the mysteries of our universe. We will explore the stars, the planets and much more. Tuesday 23 July: Our birthday tea and celebrations before we break for the summer, with live entertainment by local singer Paul Fosker. Tuesday 3 September: We return for a talk by Stephen Hope. He spent a year in the Falklands as a journalist and will tell us about the islands as they are now. Most of us had first heard of them during the Falklands war. We welcome new members who can visit for two meetings before joining. The annual membership fee is £15 and we charge £2.50 per meeting to include refreshments and raffle tickets. Meetings start at 7.30pm in Kesgrave Community Centre. For more information please contact Gloria Everett: 01473 614991 www.kesgravecoopwomensguild.onesuffolk.net

And the range of activities is huge, with everything from walking to knitting, astronomy to Spanish, Scrabble to Shakespeare. FLOWER ARRANGING WORKSHOP Deben Flower Club is holding another flower arranging workshop on Saturday 27 July in Kirton Church Hall, Church Lane, Kirton IP10 0PU. There will be floral foam and trays available to purchase on the day should you not have them already. Tea and coffee will be available, but you will need to bring a packed lunch. The class will run from 10am for 10.30am to approximately 3pm. Booking is essential and full instructions, a list of the required flowers and directions will be sent when you book your place. There will be a £5 charge to help cover the cost of the hall. If you are interested in booking or would like more information, please contact Wendy: wa@sandlings.co.uk / 01394 411422

OUT & ABOUT IPSWICH AND KESGRAVE BRIDGE CLUB
ORWELL FLOWER CLUB
Pupils from Heath School have completed their MiniBridge course and were rewarded with certificates from the English Bridge Union. The final element of the course is to play in a competitive situation and so seven pairs of learners entered the EBUs Spring Mini-Bridge tournament. In total, 138 youngsters from across the country entered the competition.
Rachel Barnard from Banham will present a demonstration entitled The Wedding Florist on Thursday, June 27. If you are free why not come along and enjoy an evening of flowers? Members have been asked to bring along a friend who can come free. This also applies to anybody who comes along to our meeting for the first time.
All the students acquitted themselves well and two pairs made the top ten places nationally. In second place nationally, and winners of the local heat were Holly and Jack with a national score of 73 per cent, and in seventh place were brothers Edward and Patrik with a score of 64 per cent. A score of 50 per cent represents an average result. One of the challenges of Mini-Bridge is to decide on a trump (or master) suit. Students were faced with the following cards and had to decide what to choose. Some pairs went for clubs (a minor suit), holding nine out of the 13 cards in that suit. Others chose spades (a major suit) as it scores better than clubs. However, some pairs chose to risk playing with no trumps, having two honours in the red suits. The best results came from playing in spades, losing only three tricks. No trumps was a disaster for some entrants. Ipswich and Kesgrave Bridge Club would like to thank Heath School with their assistance in hosting the weekly classes.
Plans are well ahead for our open meeting in Kesgrave Community Hall when Lee Berrall from Northampton will be our demonstrator. Tickets will be £18 to include a buffet. Doors open at 6.30pm and there will be various stalls for you to browse at. Tickets can be obtained from Delcie Corbett, details below. We look forward to seeing you and many visitors. Orwell Flower Club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month (except in August and December) at the Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew IP4 5SU. Demonstrations start at 7.15pm but the doors open by 6.45pm to allow you to browse at our sales tables and buy raffle tickets for the arrangements created in the demonstrations. The annual subscription fee is £40 but visitors are always welcome at £5 per meeting. For further details please contact Delcie Corbett: 01473 623371 / gil.corbett@btinternet.com.

On the same morning, our volunteers cleared the new growth from the northern tumulus. EARLY YEARS AT HEATH PRIMARY SCHOOL What superheroes the Nursery children have been! During the week before half term, we were very excited to receive a package of five tiny caterpillars, kindly purchased by the school’s PFA. The children have shown real care in studying them and have been very gentle when observing them. Outside, the children have got to grips with their eight brand new shiny trikes, bikes and scooters, and have been busy moving around the newly laid tarmac. The role play garage has also proved to be a great success with the children taking on the role of a super mechanic and fixing their newly acquired tricycles.

Next, we will be inviting our dads into the Nursery for a Father’s Day breakfast and our Air Transport Stay and Play Session. Fingers crossed we will have good flying weather so everyone can take part in the Nursery’s very own paper aeroplane challenge!
SUMMER TERM AT BRIGHT STARS
As we near the end of this academic year, we are also beginning to think about the Nursery children’s transition into Reception; the children will be meeting their new class teacher soon and spending a number of sessions with them to help prepare for this exciting change.
Fun activity sessions for pre-school aged children with parents, grandparents, friends, family and/or carers on the second and fourth Mondays of each month during term times from 10.30am-noon at St Michael’s Church Centre, Martlesham Heath IP5 3PL. Sessions are free and usually based on a theme. They normally include singing, games, crafts and Bible stories. After each session we have refreshments, when the adults can chat and the children can play until approximately noon. The last date for the summer term is July 8. Just turn up, there’s no need to let us know in advance. Autumn dates will be published in a future edition. For further information please contact Sonya and Maureen Burrows: 01473 625196
THREE BEARS PLAYGROUP Thank you to everyone who supported our summer fair at the end of June. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and to meet the families. Money raised will go to refreshing our small world resources.
Please note that although many Nursery places have now already been allocated for September, there are still a few places remaining. If you are interested in one of these places, please contact the school office, who will be happy to help. RECEPTION INTAKE 2020 With Reception in mind, we will be holding an open morning on Tuesday 1 October at 9.30am for parents/carers and children who will be due to start Reception in September 2020. You can also use our school’s website which is a great source of information for prospective parents/carers. www.heathprimary.co.uk
CEDARWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL
Three Bears will become a circus scene for a week in July. All the children are dressing up in bright colours, performing in the big ring, demonstrating their balancing skills, singing and dancing to the greatest showman music and having fantastic fun.
We are currently in the midst of our welcome sessions for our new families joining us in September. We have had lots of excited children joining in the fun and we look forward to seeing you all again when we return in September. It has been a great year with lots of interesting events, including going to the Suffolk Show with our marvellous African Keyhole garden, made by the children and our fab garden volunteers, Joy and Dave. We were awarded the ‘Large Gold’ prize, which is amazing! We hope you had fun if you came along.
We will be saying goodbye to our leavers at the end of term with a graduation show and presentation. This is a sad but happy time; sad as we say goodbye to families and children we have built relationships with, and happy that we are sending children on to school ready for the next stage in their learning journey.
In early June we had the grand opening of our beautiful boat which is located in our playground. The children have been making great use of it. Colin and Cathy, who kindly donated the boat, joined us for a beautiful recitation of The Owl and the Pussy Cat by Year 2 children and listened to our choir singing, before sharing a delicious cream tea.
If you are interested in a place for your child at a fantastic setting with amazing staff, contact us now. It’s never too early to come on our waiting list.
At the time of typing, we are about to participate in the music concert at Trinity Park with our children playing their musical instruments with many other local schools. We have lots of exciting trips for many year groups in the last few weeks of term.
We will be having a ‘WOW’ sports event and picnic for all our children and families on July 9, weather permitting.

We will miss you all, and we also look forward to welcoming our current, and new, children back on Wednesday 4 September.

SCHOOLS / SPORT HEDGEHOG NURSERY AT GORSELAND PRIMARY SCHOOL At Hedgehogs, we became scientists when carrying out an experiment by placing skittles in water and watching what happened. To our amazement, the skittles transformed and we saw a rainbow appear in the water. This helped us think about colour mixing and prompted questions about how the skittles had completely vanished! In our walks around the school, the Hedgehogs have been clever at finding different shapes, numbers and graphemes. We found letters absolutely everywhere – including some from our names. During lunchtimes, we have been visiting the large hall so we can see what it will be like in September. We also explored the Reception classrooms to look at where we might be playing and learning when we start school. We will be sad to see our Hedgehogs leave Gorseland Nursery, but are also excited for the next adventures they will be going on in the future. We send best wishes to you all and a sincere thank-you to all our families who have been so supportive and contributed to the success of this year. If you would like to know more about our Hedgehog Nursery, please do not hesitate to contact the school office to arrange a visit. Nursery Lead Teacher Mrs T Haig Hedgehog Nursery is open from 8.30am-3.15pm Monday to Friday for three and four year olds in addition, we offer wrap-around care from 7.30am-6pm every weekday. IPSWICH WANDERERS FC
KESGRAVE & NORTHGATE ASSOCIATED KARATE CLUB This month we would like to say a huge thank-you to one of our club sponsors, M & C Diesel Services in Colchester, for their very generous donation to club funds. We really do appreciate your continued support. We have a number of medals to report this month. Congratulations to Ruby who won bronze in the girl’s kumite 47kg at the Scottish International Open in Glasgow, silver in her individual +40kg category at the BKF Four Nations Championships in Leicester and gold in the team kumite event. It was then off to Gloucester on June 2 where the kata squad produced some amazing performances. Congratulations to Amelia, Chloe, Dylan and Lauren who all won gold in their own categories, a huge well done to Thomas who won silver in his final against Dylan, and it was a gold for Ruby in her kumite category. Fantastic achievements and team spirit everyone! Our club is not just about karate, competitions and fitness. As we have said on many occasions, we are more than a club – we are a family. Our Red Dragons and their families got to experience this recently when we organised a visit to Ipswich Fire Station. The children had a fantastic time sitting in the fire engine, having a look around the station and trying out the hoses! Thank you to the crew at the Princes Street Station for making us feel so welcome. Why not join us on Sunday 21 July from 7.30pm at The Bell Inn, Kesgrave for an adult-only quiz night? It’s just £5 with supper included. See our website or Facebook page for further details If you think you would like to try karate then why not come along a give it a go? The first lesson is free. The freak tornado that struck The Doucy Stadium in May devastated the old covered terrace. Localised storms such as this pass without most Rushmere residents realising that they have wrought such havoc in their parish. It was with a sense of shock that Wanderers volunteers found that the old covered terrace had been completely destroyed, and taken other structures along with it. Of course, work has been under way to clear the debris and make the stadium safe for the start of the new season. The area has been cleared and will be ready for the competitive matches in August. All of our pre-season games will be away from home and this will give time for the damaged facilities to be made safe. We thank all who have helped to clear the storm-damaged areas of the ground. Pre-season matches begin on 6 July with a game at Bourne Vale and, after matches that include Henley, Haverhill Rovers, Woodbridge and others, end on 27 July. The first bit of great news is that James Buckle and Mark Goldfinch have committed to continuing as 1st Team Managers in the forthcoming season in Step 6. The club is sure that they will assemble a very competitive side that will challenge for honours after a mid-table finish and a Suffolk Senior Cup Semi-Final place last year. Ed Birch has been appointed Under 18 Manager and Ed will be leading two teams, playing on Thursdays and on Saturdays. The second item of news is a change of chairman. David Bugg has stepped down after stabilising Wanderers over the last 15 months. David has successfully steered the club out of its turbulence off the field and we are now ready to move into the clear water presented by the Thurlow Nunn League Division One. David will be staying with the club in a new capacity and he is replaced as chairman by Steve Boyle. Steve has begun to lay out his vision for taking Ipswich Wanderers to a new level. The club now approaches the 2019-2020 season with renewed optimism and the prospect of fielding a playing staff with some real potential. The club invites supporters new and old to come to The Doucy next season and cheer on the team in blue. You will all be very welcome.

SPORT / CHURCH NEWS KESGRAVE BOWLS CLUB Well the season is now well on its way. We have several new members this year who have all made a great contribution to the club. Our season opened with club pairs which was won by Muriel Cook and Lyn Scannell. Well done ladies. Our open charity pairs was again a huge success regardless of the not so good weather. It didn’t deter anyone and there was some good bowling. The winners were Dave Johnson and partner and the runnersup were Dave Burgess and partner. Well done to them. The club raised just over £500 which will be shared by the two charities chosen for this year, Heart Foundation and EACH. A huge thanks to Muriel and all her helpers in the kitchen for all their hard work, all the members who provided food and all those who contributed raffle prizes. Thanks also to Paul Girling who checked all the scoring and made sure the results were correct. Our league teams have had some mixed results. Wednesday Blues are second at the moment, as are our Samford Wednesday afternoon team. In others we need to do better. Captains have struggled a little with players on holiday or other commitments, but fingers crossed things will improve. Our next open is triples on August 25 and our open pairs is on September 7. There are still some blocks available. Again if there is anyone interested in giving the game a try, please contact me. Joyce Secretary: 01473 626075

Fields Church is a friendly, active church in Kesgrave with a heart for God and a heart for people. Every Sunday we meet as a church family at Cedarwood Primary School, focusing on encountering God, experiencing His presence and being transformed by His word. You are welcome to join us to pray from 9.30am, cafe opens at 10am where we relax and chat in an informal environment before the main hall doors open at 10.30am for the main service. At 10.45am, bring your children of all ages through to Fields Kids where they can explore life, The Bible and Jesus with sessions full of fun, adventure, music and creativity!
The word for this month is trust.
We don’t just meet on a Sunday; check out our website and social media for more details of our other meetings and events.
When we trust and have confidence in Jesus we place our reliance on His strength, ability and the surety of His presence in our lives. We can have an expectation that He will do what He says He will and confidence in the hope we have in Him. He has put down a payment on our future of life eternal, we are always ‘in credit’ to Him and He will fulfil His obligation toward us as we have become His responsibility because He has the full authority to carry out His commitment.
Explorers Summer Holiday Club Quickly approaching is our annual Explorers Summer Holiday Club. The holiday club this year is all about adventuring and discovering, so get your jungle gear packed! We will have loads of fun singing and dancing, doing fun crafts, games and activities. We will also hear some amazing bible stories and meet some interesting characters. Our brilliant and exciting week will culminate in a family and friends BBQ and prize giving with a bouncy castle on the Friday night. The holiday club is totally free, but a donation is always appreciated.
We are in His charge, in His care and in His custody. We can trust Him to put our everything, our all, into His hands and He will keep us safe from harm. That does not mean that we will have a trouble-free life but that He is with us all the way, through our pains and sorrows. He has given us His pledge to have a duty of care towards us. He is reliable. He is honest. He is our hope. He is our confidence. We can commit ourselves to Him because He is committed to us. We can believe Him when He calls on us and He will get the job done through us. We do not have to fear for anything because He is with us and lives within us. The question is not who we are but whose we are.
It’s all happening at Cedarwood School, Wilkinson Drive, Kesgrave from Monday 29 July to Friday 2 August. These will be half-days starting at 9.30am and ending at noon. The club is aimed at Reception/Foundation to Year 6 (as of September 2018).
Want to know more then maybe we’ll see on Sunday.
