NEWS IN TOUCH WITH ELMER! On Friday, September 21 my In Touch colleagues and I took part in a fundraising event for St Elizabeth Hospice which raised £611.87. The Curry, Quiz & Raffle hosted by Isaacs on the Quay and Ipswich Buses was challenging, but a lot of fun, and all for a very good cause. We had two tables and let’s just say one did better than the other, but there wasn’t much in it. It’s always a good idea to let the boss win don’t you think! The evening is just one of many events taking place across the county as part of St Elizabeth Hospice’s Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk. The trail, which is based on the much loved character Elmer the patchwork elephant, sees the hospice once again join up with Wild in Art, who organised last year’s Pigs Gone Wild trail, and new partner Andersen Press who own the publishing rights to Elmer.

NEWS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Neighbourhood Watch involves neighbours looking after each other, such as neighbours keeping ‘an eye’ on each other’s houses while neighbours are away or on holiday.
Electronic Cemetery Records The parish council is responsible for Rushmere Lawn Cemetery located in The Street behind St Andrew’s Church. Part of this responsibility involves keeping all the burial records, with the records dating back to 1975. Until recently none of these records were computerised. We are pleased to say we now have all the records in an electronic format. This was a huge task with well over 700 records that had to be entered on a spreadsheet and all the information had to be checked. Our sincere thanks to Mr Mel Bentley, the former clerk to the parish council, for doing an excellent job and computerising all these records. Allotment Plots Available Plots are available on the Rushmere St Andrew Allotments. If you would like to give it a try please contact our parish clerk Sylvia Stannard: sylvia.stannard@rushmere-st-andrew.org.uk Winners of the Parish Council Newsletter Competitions Congratulations to the winners of the wildlife/nature photography competition; Hilary Platts for winning the over-16 category (pictured) and to Daniel Mills, aged 13, for winning the under-16 category. Well done too to Safa and Saim Khan for winning the cupcake competition with their beautifully decorated cupcakes. Look out in the autumn editon of the parish newsletter due out in November for the latest children’s competition. There is the chance to win a fabulous slime making kit. The Battle’s Over Beacon Lighting Community Event – Centenary of the ending of the First World War Sunday 11 November 2018, 5-7pm at Ipswich School Sports Centre, The Street, Rushmere St Andrew IP5 1DE Only a handful of the 500 tickets are left! If you require tickets and live in the parish of Rushmere St Andrew please contact the assistant parish clerk soonest. Please contact the assistant parish clerk about helping at the Beacon event or for tickets: 01473 711509 / sarah.jenkins@rushmere-st-andrew.org.uk Details of the event and photographs will be in the next issue of InTouch and on the parish website: www.rushmerestandrew.onesuffolk.net Police Surgeries Meet with PCSO Mike Sarbutts to discuss matters of concern in confidence at Tower Hall, 5 Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew IP4 5SU on Tuesdays, November 6 & 20 and December 4 and 18, 1.30-2.30pm. Email Michael.sarbutts@suffolk.pnn.police.uk or just turn up on the day. School Parking at Broke Hall School PCSO Mike Sarbutts is attending Broke Hall Community Primary School very frequently and has already started to issue fixed penalty notices (£30 fine) where parking offences have been committed. PCSO Sarbutts would urge all drivers to please make themselves aware of the regulations around the school they attend, to arrive early to find a parking space, and to drive slowly paying particular attention to junctions where children will be crossing.

Being part of the Neighbourhood Watch scheme is relatively simple – there’s little or no work for you to do, apart from being a good neighbour. When you report suspicious activities or environmental issues in your area, it helps reduce crime and keeps the neighbourhood a pleasant place to live. The benefits of joining a neighbourhood watch include: • being an active part of your community no matter where you live • increasing your safety awareness and preventing bad stuff from happening • looking out for your neighbours, including the old, the young and the vulnerable • find out first: you’ll learn of crime trends that affect your area • reductions on home insurance What’s involved in being a member? Once you’re signed up, there’s nothing to do unless you want to get involved with organising street parties or other activities. What makes you part of Neighbourhood Watch is that you care about the welfare of the people who live near you and you notice and act if something has gone amiss. Members receive monthly updates on local crime figures and crime prevention advice by email. The specific roles The coordinator is a person who agrees to set up and run the watch for your street/estate. They sign a declaration and provide contact information so that they can receive info from the police and Suffolk NHW Association. The coordinator will send this info to the watch members and feed back any concerns they feel necessary. How to join If you’re interested in joining or setting up a watch, there is a local Rushmere St Andrew Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and another in Kesgrave and we would love you to join with us. For more details for both schemes contact Gavin Pond: neighbourhoodwatchip4@gmail.com We also have a lot of helpful leaflets and things you can do to keep your property protected and help reduce crime. Also visit: www.suffolknwa.co.uk All it takes is two or three people in a road willing to be a good neighbour. Keep an eye on what is happening in your part of the road, inform neighbours of anything of concern. Link into Police Direct (www.suffolk.police.uk/services/police-connect) and you will be kept informed of any crime problems in your locality. It doesn’t take up much of your time, you might just get to know the people around you a bit better and that can only be good for the community.
CHRISTMAS FAIR AT CEDARWOOD Saturday, December 8, 2-4.30pm Santa’s Sleigh will leave Cedarwood at 4.30pm for its usual route around Grange Farm. KESGRAVE WI Our October meeting was a very ‘magical’ evening! Ex-magician Colin Hooper entertained us with his History of Magic talk with many practical examples of his skill as a magician. Colin invited us to ask as many questions as we liked – except “How do you actually do the tricks?”! After coffee our president swiftly completed the business part of the meeting informing members that a donation of £200 would be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, profits from running the refreshment stall at this year’s Kesgrave Fun Day. Details were given about the various social events planned, Scrabble, walking, craft and our annual visit to Rushmere Golf Club for our Christmas lunch in early December. The monthly competition to dress a paper doll was won by Doreen Chapman, second Val Clements and third Maggie Stockton and Daphne Ludbrook. Our next meeting is at 7.15pm on Thursday, November 1 at Kesgrave Community Centre. There won’t be a speaker on this evening as it’s our annual meeting when the 2019 committee will be elected. It’s also our biannual table top show when members show off their skill in a variety of areas, including gardening, cookery, needlecraft, flower arranging and photography. Visitors are very welcome to join us. If you require any information please call the secretary, Di Chilver: 01473 611415

BRIDGE – A GAME FOR ALL AGES
www.martleshambrass.co.uk
Have you thought about playing Bridge? Do you enjoy playing cards? Do you think you are too young? Too old? Don’t know what it is?
CAN YOU HELP? My name is Nigel Donkin. I live locally and as the new fundraising manager for the British Heart Foundation in Suffolk I am looking for your help. I would be delighted to have the support of some local volunteers to help me raise essential funds that are required to carry out the 1,000 research projects into heart disease, diabetes, vascular dementia and strokes currently undertaken by BHF. Everyone in our community will know of someone affected by at least one of these horrible illnesses; with your help, we can advance our knowledge, understanding and treatment for all. In the last 50 years the BHF has halved the heart and circulatory disease death rate from 1:2 to 1:4 and the ambition is to halve that again in the next five years. In September and October we formed very vibrant teams of volunteers in Great Blakenham and Stowmarket. I’m sure there are many supporters living to the east of Ipswich that could come together to form a new team. To offer your support and find out more, come along to our awareness evening at Ipswich YM Rugby Club, The Street, Rushmere St Andrew IP5 1DG on Wednesday, November 14 at 7pm. I will be joined by survivors of heart disease and volunteers who are keen to share their experiences and demonstrate how the research undertaken by the BHF saves lives in every community, making it a very local charity. I look forward to meeting you all in person. Contact me at 07387 261861 / donkinn@bhf.org.uk or pick up a leaflet from the BHF shops in town.

I have been playing since the late 1960s, when I was still at a local primary school. Clearly I’m biased, but I think the things that I found fascinating when I started and continue to find fascinating should appeal to people of any age. So what are these fascinating things? It’s a card game played as part of a team (usually of two but possibly four or eight). If you are a competitive person who likes being in a team, Bridge could be your game. What makes Bridge the Rolls Royce of card games is that it thoroughly tests your ability to think logically and analytically, improve your memory while also testing your creativity and imagination (with, like poker, many opportunities to bluff) as you try and work out who has what cards. So if you haven’t discovered the game yet, perhaps Bridge could be the game for you. Beginner’s classes are run by Ipswich and Kesgrave Bridge Club at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre (KWMCC). If you want to know more contact Chris Green at greencj06@hotmail.co.uk or visit: www.bridgewebs.com/ipswich If you already know how to play but want to play more, a number of clubs meet in the Ipswich area; it depends on how often you want to play and what time(s) suit you best. For example, the largest club in the area is Ipswich and Kesgrave Bridge Club which meets at 7pm on Thursday evenings at KWMCC. If you want to know what options you have in terms of times and locations visit: www.bridgewebs.com/suffolkbridge

OUT & ABOUT KESGRAVE CO-OP WOMEN’S GUILD
MARTLESHAM HEATH AVIATION SOCIETY
After welcoming members and visitors on September 18, our chairman Gloria Everett introduced Colin Hopper who gave a fascinating talk about the world of optical illusions. Colin is a member of the magic circle and he explained how illusions are often used in magic tricks. He also showed us several drawings, shapes and patterns which could deceive the eye and were not quite what they seemed. Some members could see different things from the rest of us in the same picture or pattern.
On Friday, November 2, 7.30-10pm, Martyn Cook presents The Martlesham Heath Airfield Story 1917-1963 and Howard King presents A Brief History of Gliding – and Gliding at Martlesham Heath in the ‘50s.
David Webb was our speaker on October 2. He was one of the yellow coats in Hi-de-Hi. David lives in Mistley and he and his twin brother were members of Ipswich Operatic and Dramatic Society which led to them becoming a professional singing duo in the 1970s. They joined the Hi-de-Hi cast which filmed at the Warner’s holiday camp in Dovercourt from 1979 to 1988. They also toured in the stage show. Later David and his brother appeared with many famous celebrities including Vera Lynn. We were entertained with several clips of the shows and interviews with its stars, a very entertaining evening.

YOUR LOCAL COUNTRY MARKET
Picture: By S Corley Mary Portas knows a thing or two about people’s buying habits. She loves browsing through interesting markets herself and she’s recommending buying 50 per cent of our Christmas shopping from local producers. If you agree, get a head start by ordering your cakes for the festive season now from the Country Market. It’s never too early, and you can pick up your order from the market when it suits you. We can make up a hamper for you – with food and genuine locally made crafts – and free you from the effort of catering for friends and family for special occasions or regular meals at busy times and parties. Remember that our high standards of baking and crafts won’t disappoint. I’m always interested in new ideas for gifts for special people, especially unusual treats with a personal touch. A painted portrait of a favourite local scene, pet or car, a bowl made from a branch of a garden tree, a beaded necklace to complement a new outfit, a knitted cardie or lovely crochet work, or a prettily iced cake made to granny’s recipe: our skilled artisans can turn their collective hands to these and many more unique commissions (glutenfree and other dietary specialities are our forte). Why not come and discuss your requirements with our makers and bakers? We’ll have some ideas for unique gifts too. Pooh bear and other honey lovers will welcome our latest producer who brings locally made honey, starting in November. Is there someone you want to treat to the most perfectly matched present? Something special? Whether you have an idea or not, pop along to our Tuesday morning market and chat to our crafters, bakers, growers and producers. Our prices are competitive too, so you’ll get good value. Make Mary Portas happy and support your local Country Market. We’re open every Tuesday from 9-11.15am in Martlesham Heath Pavilion. Find us, find some lovely eats, crafty treats and a warm welcome.

PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP The September session saw the volunteers clearing the southern tumulus. It’s important that plant roots do not get re-established on the burial mounds as this could damage it. English Heritage approval of both of the tumuli will help protect the woods from development.
During this time, the Nature Explorers cleared out the tool store and helped to fit a new metal door, much needed following the recent break-in. We would like to thank everyone who has offered donations of their spare garden tools. We still need more; if anyone has old gardening tools they no longer require and would be happy to donate then please get in contact (details below). It would be appreciated. We’re keen to get more Nature Explorers at the moment, so if you’re 11-18 years old and have an interest in wildlife or conservation it would be great to see you at a meeting. If you are celebrating November 5 with a bonfire and its left unattended, please check for hedgehogs before lighting. Never use sharp objects (instead use a pole/broom to lift sections) as these can harm hidden hedgehogs. Listen out for hissing (the noise hedgehogs make when disturbed). DATES FOR THE DIARY Volunteer Work Morning (all ages) Saturday, November 17, 10am-noon Meet at the Education Area Tools, training and light refreshments provided All welcome; no need to book Nature Explorers (11-18 year olds) Saturday, November 17, 9-11am Please book a place via our email address below Nature Watch Club (5-11 year olds) 2018 dates to be confirmed New volunteers of all ages and abilities are always welcome. No experience needed. ORWELL FLOWER CLUB Due to the hall being closed we had to cancel our September meeting, but we are now looking forward to our meeting on Thursday, October 25 when Lorraine Scott from Thetford will present a demonstration entitled Autumn Floral Fusion. We are holding a Christmas workshop on Thursday, November 29. Doors open at 6.45pm and we will be making Christmas garlands. This is for members and visitors. All you need to do is to book in. Please contact Delcie Corbett, details below. The fee is £10 to include your wreath ring and foliage; you are welcome to bring along any accessories you would like to include. You will also need to bring along a cover for the table, a bag to collect your rubbish and a pair of scissors. Coffee, tea and mince pies will also be served. Please book by November 22 as the club needs to make sure we have enough wreath rings for the number attending.
HUMPTY DUMPTY PLAYGROUP The children will be celebrating Halloween with a party full of spooky games and learning about keeping themselves and animals safe during the bonfire celebrations. On Thursday, November 22 we will be raising money for BRAKE, the road safety charity, by holding a Wear your Stripes Day along with ZAK the zebra. We currently have spaces so please feel free to contact Wendy (details below) or pop in for a chat with our friendly Early Years team, where we have two qualified teachers, and all other staff are CACHE qualified level 3/4. THE SAPLINGS What a magical term we have planned with autumn, fireworks, Diwali, Children in Need and Christmas all approaching very quickly. Before this, The Saplings are celebrating an amazing birthday, 25 years of fabulous childcare. We are so proud of our long serving team and the support of all the families. On Saturday, October 27 at 2pm we will be hosting our Spooky Pumpkin Walk to raise funds to purchase new balance bikes, a play kitchen, sensory and investigating resources. Recently the children have had an amazing time ‘working’ in The Saplings green grocer’s shop. They have used real fruit and vegetables to sell to their friends, using their mathematical skills to count, weigh and sort the money and endless language skills. This activity extended with the fruit being cut up and explored using our senses. A lovely experience for the children the photos can be found on our Facebook page: The Saplings Martlesham Heath

SCHOOLS / SPORT MARTLESHAM & KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOLS
KESGRAVE TENNIS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018
At Kesgrave Playschool we have been loving the outdoor explorer sessions. These nature-based sessions allow children to develop a sense of their local environment, promote overall well-being and encourage natural curiosity, risk assessment and independence. Some of the activities the children have taken part in are: senses nature walks, mud kitchen sessions, making faces using natural objects in the woods and environment colour hunts. We have also been promoting British values through introducing a daily choice. Children now vote in order to make important decisions such as which story we read, what fruit/veg we have for snack, or if we sing or dance at end of session. It’s been a great talking point for the children and staff. It not only allows children to feel respected and listened to, but also helps develop a tolerance for others with differing thoughts or feelings.
Jason Dove and Matt Johnson vied for the men’s singles title, but after a gladiatorial battle Matt retained his title after losing the first set, Jason leaving the court at the end in search of an ice bath! The junior final was contested by Jasper Mardell and Daniel Roberts. At first it looked as if the David and Goliath story was to be played out on court. Smaller in stature but big on placement, Jasper dominated the first few games. Daniel then found his form and his powerful serving and penetrating forehands gradually dominated as he went on to win comfortably.
At Martlesham everyone is getting involved with our new themes. We have a new theme in our role play area each week with new and exciting activities for the children to explore. We have now spent the rest of our Tesco money and bought a new playhouse for the garden. The children have been exploring the environment with the little explorers club, making natural crowns, collecting leaves and doing rubbings. We still have some spaces left for this and future terms at both playschools and we welcome you to come and look round. Our dedicated teams ensure that your child will have excellent opportunities to learn and grow with us. KESGRAVE CRICKET CLUB Double League Champions! What a season 2018 has been! Without doubt, the best ever season for the club. Our 1st XI secured the Two Counties Division 3 title, their third successive league win, and our 2nd XI won the Division 9 East title. So next year we will be seeing a very high standard of cricket being played at the Kesgrave Community Centre. Off the field, we secured over £40,000 in funding to build our new outdoor net facility and new bar. The club owes a great deal to their hard-working committee members, coaches, groundsmen, tea ladies and volunteers who have worked so hard this year to make this happen. We look forward to another successful season next year. The club is always on the lookout for new players and volunteers, particularly if you live in and around Kesgrave, so if you are interested please contact us through our website. Our senior presentation evening will take place in the club pavilion on Friday, November 9 at 7.30pm. Notable batting achievements include: Sam Dixey (55) and Ryan Hoyle (33 no) v Nacton; Matt Oliver (33) and Paul Budd (28) v Haverhill; Paul Kendrick (108), Nathan Young (67 no) and Akhil Gogna (54) v Mistley; Matt Oliver (76) and Ben Colver (37) v Abberton; Nick Godward (85) and Ben Colver (33) v Brockley; Akhil Gogna (103), Sam Dixey (82) and Kieran Perez, (40) v Yoxford; Matt Oliver (49) and Mike Worne (40) v Bury St. Edmunds; Nick Godward (105 no) and Sam Colver (33) v Easton; Sam Colver (55) and Paul Kendrick (30) v Tuddenham. In the Plate Men’s Singles final on the adjacent court, Ashley Jordan found his younger, very talented opponent Mark Smee giving him no easy points and a good run-around. Similarly Debbie Hammond found her young opponent Amber Harding more experienced in singles play, but the score in the Plate Ladies Singles final didn’t reflect the dual of the match. In the Plate Junior Singles final Bart Lewandowski and Joel Thomson showed great enthusiasm. Strong groundstrokes and serving from Bart, along with more experience, gave him the edge and he came through comfortably in the end despite Joel’s continuous scampering and effort. Mark Smee partnered Paul Mickelsen in the Plate Men’s Doubles final and secured a second dominant win. Peter Howard and Graham Buddle tried many ways to foil the solid pair over the net, but the combination of Paul’s ‘lefty’ jinks and Mark’s all round quality play was too strong on the day. It was great to see Jan Hazell and Judith Emerson competing in the Plate Ladies Doubles final as both are keen non-team players whose love of the game is infectious. They were up against two young pretenders, and current team players, Amber Harding and Katherine Midwinter. While Amber and Katherine won the match, Jan and Judith shared the plaudits of the spectators and will hopefully be part of next year’s championships along with many other non-team players. Proving to be the longest match of the day was the ladies doubles between Annie Brown and Léa Denley and Alison Leech and Debbie Hammond. The players gave their all and the result was in doubt to the end. Winning in three sets Annie and Léa won their first title together having contested the singles earlier in the week. In the ladies singles final, Léa had beaten Annie playing more deftly and with more attack. Debbie Hammond was soon back on court with Steve Pilcher in the Plate Mixed Doubles playing against another three match player, Mark Smee, and his partner Katherine Midwinter. Mark continued his rich seam of form and despite strong resistance from Debbie and Steve he and Katherine managed to overcome the experience and quality court craft they faced. CHURCH NEWS ALL SAINTS CHURCH Remembrance is a special word in the Bible. In Luke’s Gospel we read of Jesus sharing the first Communion Service with his disciples like this: And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In essence the word means to make real in the here and now, the there and then. In other words, Christians believe that when they take communion Jesus is as truly with them as he was at The Last Supper. What of our use of the word today? This year Remembrance Sunday falls exactly on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Consequently, I believe, we need as a community to making a special effort to mark it. Elsewhere in this edition you’ll find details of the town council events taking place (see page 4). As a church we are hosting a special exhibition on November 10 (see page 3) and on Remembrance Day itself there will be three morning services. At 10am there are two choices – the normal All-Age Parade Service in the church and a special, more reflective service in the hall based around First World War poetry and traditional hymns. Then at 11.15am there will be another Parade Service. All three services will allow us to gather at the War Memorial for that most sacred of moments – the two minutes silence at 11am. Please join us and work with us to make real in the here and now the peace that countless sacrifices a hundred years ago made real in the there and then. Silver Café Later on November 11 (and finishing in good time for the Beacon celebrations) we will be holding a Silver Café from 4-5.30pm, followed with singing our favourite hymns (voting slips in church until November 4). The service will replace our normal 6.30pm Communion. All ages welcome. Silver Games and Silver Screen The former will take place on November 5 and the latter on November 19 where we will be showing the film Field of Dreams, a movie with no guns, violence, gangsters, no gratuitous sex, just down-to-earth good people, and a good message. What a gem. Farmhouse Service Sunday, November 18 at 10.30am, a service with the opportunity to remember and commemorate loved ones. All welcome. Our basic pattern is that every Sunday we have services at 8.30am (BCP Communion), 10am (Modern yet traditional service with All-Age alternative) and 6.30pm (Evensong). There isn’t enough space to mention our myriad of tweaks and alternatives, but please visit www. askegrave.org.uk or email Charlotte to receive our fortnightly notices: cha.markham@btinternet.com

Declaring God’s Way - Sharing His Love How time flies! Here we are, into November and thinking about Christmas already. We have had a busy time at RBC once the summer months were over, starting with our Harvest Festival Service which went very well, with lots of produce on display. All the items were then sent to FIND (Families in Need), a Christian charity which helps those families in Ipswich who are less fortunate and need that extra bit of help. Once again this year we are taking part in the Cry in the Dark! Christmas Shoebox Appeal. This is where we can help to make Christmas really special for a child or young adult in Romania who may otherwise not get a special present this Christmas. We hope to have a good number of boxes again this year. Last year we sent 100 boxes from our church.
