A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Every parent strives to raise optimistic, happy children and we do all sorts to give them the best start in life and to be there to support them when they need us, and possibly when they don’t. Of course they don’t always appreciate our efforts, but I like to remind Jack quite frequently (i.e. every morning as we walk to school) how fortunate he is and I’m slowly teaching him the value of money and the practice of saving for the things he wants (as opposed to getting everything immediately). In doing so I’ve come to realise how little self-restraint I have myself and admit it’s quite a few years since I’ve actually ‘saved’ to buy something I’ve spotted in a shop window. Nowadays I’m more likely to ‘stick’ it on a card, but the purchase is then laden with guilt and often hidden at the back the cupboard until I can pull it out and say “this old thing; I’ve had it for ages”! I miss the ‘old’ days when finally getting your hands on the thing you desired was enormously satisfying, but it may be difficult to convince an eight-year-old growing up in today’s throwaway society. I’m also keen to impress on him how important it is to support local shops and local tradespeople. Local businesses, local retail outlets and local employers are the lifeblood of community. They rely on our support and it’s in our best interests to provide it. A vibrant local economy ensures we can buy the things we want when we want them, find people to provide services when we need them, find work experience and Saturday jobs for our teenagers, sponsors for local events and jobs closer to home, but also generates a sense of hopefulness, confidence and pride which benefits us all and stimulates further investment and growth. I often write about how fortunate we are to live in this little corner of the world and have encouraged you to support local events, but as we gear up for winter and start to think about Christmas, take a look around your local ‘business’ community and I’m confident you won’t need to go very far to find everything you need. Every penny you spend with a local supplier or in a local shop is an investment in the future of your local economy and consequently in ‘community’ itself.

TUNES FOR TRIPS IN AID OF AFIA Did you manage to get away from it all this summer? Maybe you enjoyed a traditional fortnight’s holiday with the family, or perhaps you spent days out exploring the beautiful East Anglian coast. However you spent your time, I hope you returned refreshed. For many people holidays and days out are a mere dream, but the Mothers’ Union charity AFIA (Away From It All) is able to provide breaks, days out and activities for disadvantaged and vulnerable families. The costs are met in various ways – from Mothers’ Union branches, fundraising events and grants from local agencies. On Saturday, November 17 members of Trianon Music Group will be performing at St Andrew’s Church in Rushmere and the proceeds will go to AFIA. The concert will feature singers and brass players from the group performing a selection of light classical and popular music. Tickets are priced at £7.50 each and are available from Music World in Ipswich or Mary Odam: 01473 614456 / tickets@odam.org This will be the final Trianon concert of 2018 (see page 8 for details of their concert on October 15). Next year they will be celebrating their 60th anniversary so please look out for details of the 2019 season. Please come and support both the performers and AFIA. I hope you return home refreshed!

NEWS KESGRAVE SINGERS CHARITY CONCERT On Saturday, October 6, the Kesgrave Singers and the St John’s CEVA Primary School Senior Choirs will be holding an autumn concert. All proceeds will be split between Families in Need (FIND) and Ipswich Outreach Bus. The concert will be held in the main hall at Kesgrave Community Centre and will begin at 7pm. Tickets are £7.50 for adults and £3 for under-16s and are available from Michael Rayment on: 01473 623486

BUS NOTES There are increasing calls within the bus industry for printed timetable books to be re-introduced, a call which I support. The former timetable books covered the whole of a company’s area which it served and contained a great deal of information about all its services, with detailed timings and usually a fold-out map. With these, one could plan travels by bus over a large area. But nowadays the best that can be found is a simple leaflet with compressed timing information and little else, for usually just a few routes. Here to the east of Ipswich we have the bare minimum, a thin pamphlet with just one or two bus routes and little other information which does nothing to encourage bus journeys to anywhere unfamiliar. In Kesgrave, this extends to having two local routes which interwork spread over two separate leaflets, an example of publicity sinking to its very lowest level by people with no interest in what they are promoting. It is true that bus times can be downloaded from the internet, but again, this is restricted to the precise information requested, with no further data provided. The bus industry must do better than this. Happy Wanderer

MIDWEEK WALK

FREE PROSTATE CANCER TESTS East Suffolk Prostate Cancer Support Group will be holding its sixth PSA test event for men between the ages of 45 and 75 at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich, on Thursday, October 18 between 6.30 and 8.30pm. Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men but it can be successfully treated if detected in time. Eleven-thousand men die every year in the UK because their prostate cancer was detected too late. If there is a history of prostate cancer or breast cancer in your direct family blood line there is an increased possibility of you getting prostate cancer. A small blood sample will be taken from your arm by a trained phlebotomist. The sample will be analysed in an NHS laboratory and the urologist will write to you to explain your result and advise whether you should take further action. Although a free test, a donation on the night towards the costs of this event would be very much appreciated. The venue is sponsored by Greshams, Ipswich.

On Wednesday, October 10, starting at 10.30am, I will be leading a walk from the footpath opposite The Bell Public House. I anticipate walking for approximately two hours and returning to our start point. If you have any questions, or in the event of bad weather, please call me on 01473 623486. I look forward to meeting you on October 10. Kesagrave Town Council Footpath Representative Michael Rayment I am writing on behalf of the residents of Dobbs Lane. Dobbs Lane is not a main road, but is being used as a cut-through race track by many motorists who speed and have no thought for elderly people and small children who take longer to cross the road. There isn’t a 30mph or any other speed limit sign or flashing speedometer in a position to be seen by motorists as they leave the A12. One of these urgently needs to be installed. There is a high risk of someone being seriously injured or even killed. I have contacted Councillor Lawson for advice and am gathering support from residents who also feel strongly about the poor condition of our road and broken paths. Yours sincerely, S Harris

OUT & ABOUT IPSWICH COUNTRY MARKET TRIANON BRASS ENSEMBLE AND SINGERS British, delicious and local to you As we move into October and mark the end of British summertime our garden produce is coming to an end, but we always have a wide variety of genuinely home-baked goods and preserves, home-produced craft items, plus homegrown seasonal flowers and plants. Cakes and preserve recipes have often been passed down through the generations, so you won’t find anything like them in your local supermarket. Our producers are of all ages and from all walks of life, but they are all passionate about offering the best quality local produce. All products sold at Ipswich Country Market are made by the members themselves in their own kitchens, grown in their own gardens or crafted in their own homes. With half term this month, why not bring the younger members of your family along for a treat? You will find a warm welcome and a real community atmosphere. We are open on Thursday mornings from 10.15-11.30am at Rushmere Village Hall on Humber Doucy Lane / IP4 3PB. We have plenty of free parking and home baked refreshments, with a free tea or coffee on your first visit. You can find more information about the market on our Facebook page (Ipswich Country Market) and at: www.ipswichcountrymarket.co.uk.

Trianon Brass Ensemble and Singers will be giving a concert of entertaining classics at 7.30pm on Saturday, October 13 at the Ipswich Unitarian Meeting House (Friars Street IP1 1TD) in aid of the Meeting House Restoration Fund. Tickets are £8 which includes a glass of wine (or alternative) and are available by ringing 07763 668038. The Meeting House was built in 1699 and is a beautiful example of an early non-conformist chapel. Following an extensive survey by our property manager Phil Chatfield, we have learned of the serious need for restoration work requiring a £500,000 investment. The Heritage at Risk section of Historic England has agreed that we are eligible to apply for a major grant to help fund this, but we will also need to raise further money and this concert is our next fundraiser. We hold services here every Sunday at 10.45am and are an active congregation and involved in our community too. Gippeswyk Singers enjoyed a weekend of hot sunny weather on their summer concert tour to the West Country in June which saw them warmly welcomed at the Frome Festival and also performing at the beautiful St Michael’s Without in Bath. Lovely weather for sightseeing and a wonderful time traveling and singing together made for a memorable trip to Somerset. Rehearsals are now underway for a New Year Concert with Martlesham Brass on Sunday, January 6 which will include Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. Once Christmas is over the choir will be focused with great anticipation on preparing a spring concert at Snape Maltings. Conductor Geoff Lavery is the musical director of three Suffolk choirs which are working in collaboration to present Verdi’s Requiem at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on Saturday, May 11. Beccles Choral Society and Phoenix Singers will be joining Gippeswyk Singers and the Lambeth Orchestra for what will be a special highlight on Suffolk’s musical calendar next year. Tickets are already selling and are available from choir members and from Snape Maltings Box Office. Gippeswyk Singers support local charities with their concerts so do come along and hear a delightfully expressive chamber choir and give a boost to some worthy local causes. KESGRAVE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN What is a Neighbourhood Plan?

A land use plan that sets out planning policies for Kesgrave. Alongside those in the Suffolk Coastal Local Plan these policies will be used to guide decisions on planning applications and the future development of our services, amenities and activities. It is written by the local community, the people who know and love the area, rather than Suffolk Coastal District Council. It is a powerful tool to ensure we get the right types of development that will better benefit our local community.

Not everything can be delivered at once especially where there is a cost involved. The plan will set out our aspirations and priorities for the long term.

What has happened so far?

Three community engagement events were held in July last year and these were followed up in October by a questionnaire issued to every household. Around 800 replies were received. The results were analysed and documented in March. A further 58 young people filled in surveys at the Funday in June this year. Businesses and other interests are being consulted as part of the process too. The objectives set out below came about as a direct result of your survey responses.

OBJECTIVES of our PLAN

Design and layout 1. To protect the character of Kesgrave, particularly in respect of preserving the established openness of the built-up areas and surrounding countryside.

THIS MEANS we are looking to: • Ensure our wooded areas and the Longstrops fields are preserved as now; and that

• residential infill development reflects the character of the surrounding area and protects the amenity of neighbours.

Environment 2. To preserve and enhance the quality of green spaces and landscaping.

THIS MEANS we are looking to: • Retain what we have, plant more trees, improve the facilities provided, and encourage their responsible use.

3. To ensure development does not increase air pollution.

Facilities & Well-being 5. To expand and enhance the range and quality of recreational and sporting facilities so that it fully serves the needs of Kesgrave’s community today.

THIS MEANS we are looking to: • Increase the number of sports fields and facilities and fill the gaps we have in providing opportunities compared to other Suffolk towns.

Roads, Transport & Safety 6. To address issues of vehicle congestion and safety at key road junctions serving Kesgrave. 7. To provide better alternatives to the car for local journeys by expanding and improving the cycle path network.

8. To increase the provision of usable off-road parking in order to enhance the character of Kesgrave and improve pedestrian and cycle safety.

What are the NEXT STEPS?

To take into account your feedback in designing a set of policies that expand on our OBJECTIVES in a more detailed and practical way. Complete writing the PLAN document and put it forward to an independent Examiner for approval.

Everyone will then have an opportunity to accept or reject the PLAN through a referendum which we hope will be called before the end of 2019.

What can I DO?

• reduce dependence on cars by enhancing local amenities.

Come along to the Community Day at Kesgrave Market on Saturday, 20th October and give us your opinions in person – tell us what YOU think are priorities for the future development of Kesgrave! Or, if you cannot attend and you have an opinion, write to us by 30th November 2018 at:

THIS MEANS we are looking to: • Conserve and enhance our woods as recognised nature spots.

Email: enquiry@kesgravetowncouncil.org.uk

THIS MEANS we are looking to: • Encourage greater use of public transport by seeking improvements in services; and

4. To ensure wildlife thrives and wildlife corridors are protected and enhanced.

YOUR LOCAL COUNTRY MARKET Sharing the Bounty The hedges are laden with blackberries; the nights are drawing in. It’s the time of year when our neighbourhood artisan cooks are preserving and jammaking even more than ever. Come and taste their efforts – buy a pot or three for your larder… mmm… Pies, quiches, pastries savouries and sweet, cakes, cookies, tarts and fudge are also available for your personal delectation and for sharing. A welcome tasty gift for a friend or a wholesome treat for the family – not forgetting that we make delicious gluten-free and dietary ‘specials’ to order so everyone can have a slice. Remember your five-a-day: we have home-grown vegetables, hand-picked fruit and fresh eggs. What we are looking for is a supplier of honey, so if you know a local bee-keeper who needs an outlet, please ask them to get in touch with Margaret Gayfer on 01473 623849. As you may know, eating local honey is believed to help prevent allergies to local pollens, and it tastes great on toast and in tea.

This is always a great occasion with dancing to the talented duo Liqueur. A delicious fork buffet will be served with coffee and an excellent tombola with a multitude of exciting prizes to be won.

Need a bag or cot quilt or bunting? Delight in the textures of crochet-work. Is it time for a new pair of fleecy gloves – with a matching hat and scarf – ready for when the weather turns? What about a wooden bowl or bangle, handturned, to enjoy on your table? Our busy crafters are happy to chat, to discuss their methods and materials as well as to take commissions for any occasion – and Christmas, of course.

Tickets at £28 (to include the buffet) are available from Liz Woodmass: 01394 448226

YOUR DREAM GARDEN IS JUST A CALL AWAY Your garden is really an extension of your home, a place to relax, to play, to eat and, at times, to do a little work! You can make it whatever you want it to be, but if you need help to realise your vision it makes sense to work with an experienced team with the very highest standards of customer care. A team with a vast database of satisfied customers who draw on each other’s’ strengths and who work as a family, because that’s just what they are. Build my Garden is a family business with three brothers working hand-in-hand, each bringing particular skills to the team. Peter specialises in turfing and fencing. For Alex it’s block paving, patios and decking. Mark’s passion is landscaping gardening.

Co-directors Mark and Nicola have lived in Kesgrave their entire adult lives. Excellent customer service is their absolute priority so keeping customers abreast of all aspects of the work as it progresses is a basic commitment. As Mark explains: “We bring considerable knowledge and experience to the job, but when you work with us you are involved in every decision. Communication is critical to success and many of our customers have commented on how easy it is to work with us. Our customers trust us because we are open and honest about all aspects of the job.” Mark and Nicola have made a significant investment into the business and with all the latest equipment and power tools on-hand they not only produce precise results but also work incredibly efficiently. And with four new vehicles available at all times, customers are never kept waiting and never let down. “Our customers benefit from the best possible prices because of our efficient work practices and our honest work ethic. Our quotes are always met and with customers asking us to do additional work and recommending us to friends, neighbours and family, the company is growing quickly.

Together they have many years’ landscaping experience in the construction industry, working with one of the region’s largest new build companies, and currently have contracts with three of the largest estate agents and letting agents in Suffolk. So if it’s an entirely new garden or a garden that’s new to you, the team at Build my Garden will work with you to either create something entirely new or to give new life to an existing space.

“Seeing the potential in even the smallest garden and making it an absolute pleasure for you to enjoy and get the most from your garden in what drives us,” says Mark. “Had work done to front garden area: paving and a metal fence. Really pleased with result and standard of work. Alex was pleasant and efficient and both he and Mark kept me informed all the time. Now considering further work.” Nadia, Kesgrave

ANNUAL HISTORY FAIR 1918 – BACK TO THE FUTURE is the theme of Suffolk Family History Society’s Annual Fair on Saturday, October 27 at the University of Suffolk (Waterside Building, 19 Neptune Quay, Ipswich IP4 1QP) from 10am-4pm. A lot will be said soon about the centenary of The Great War ceasefire at 11am on November 11, 1918. At that time, while most celebrated, many mourned tragic losses and suffered the scars, privations and the damaging aftermath of the war. Their war over, the surviving men returned to a country changed forever. Many families were decimated. Women, many doing men’s work and keeping the country going, were replaced by returning men. The wounded, many suffering appalling injuries and shellshock, needed to be cared for and food was in short supply. The country was battered, and a devastating worldwide flu epidemic further decimated the survivors and others. This fair, our third at this location, addresses these issues and others, helping researchers to understand what our ancestors went through here in Suffolk.

Organised by KHS students as part of their fundraising for a conservation expedition to South Africa next summer. To book a table phone: 01473 610437

IPSWICH AND DISTRICT SOROPTIMIST CLUB Way back in 1995 our club held a lunch to honour 20 special women nominated by people in Ipswich for their outstanding service to the community. Among them was Maureen Reynel who had started FIND, a charity to support Families in Need. We invited her to speak at our last meeting about the development of this work over almost 30 years and she gave us disturbing insights into the lives of fellow citizens in Ipswich suffering from poverty and dispossession. To hear that some families simply cannot afford sanitary protection for mothers and daughters really hit home and we made a collection of these items to donate to FIND. In February we had a quick celebration of the centenary of the granting of the vote to (some) women. We are returning to this theme this autumn. We have all been reading A Song of their Own, an impressively researched record by Joy Bounds of the women who fought for the vote in Ipswich. We shall discuss it at our coming supper meeting. Women’s Voices, Women’s Votes On a wider scale we are very excited about Women’s Voices, Women’s Votes, a major festival on October 6. Women’s groups from across Ipswich have come together to create this landmark event and we are delighted to have been involved in some of the planning and to be a modest sponsor. Some of us attended the recent launch which had a wonderful atmosphere.

OUT & ABOUT FAMILY FIRST – WHO ARE WE? Family First is a Christian charity which enables families to develop their capacity in supporting themselves and finding solutions to the challenges that impact their lives. We are committed to working with, serving and relating to all people in our community and are keen to ensure that our services are accessible to any families regardless of race, religion or belief, age, sexual orientation or marital status. We offer support to vulnerable and struggling families with children up to the age of 18 who have been through, or are still facing difficult situations equipping and empowering them with the skills that they need to make changes and move out of chaotic and dysfunctional lifestyles. As a registered charity we have a board of trustees, members of which have a wide range of skills and experience in public and private sector. Our focus is very much on helping families to help themselves. We provide a family coordinator who acts a key worker for the family. They complete an initial assessment and identify goals with the family. They also liaise with other agencies and signpost to other services. They monitor the family’s progress at three monthly reviews. The family coordinator also supervises the work of the family volunteer. Family volunteers visit weekly to support the family to achieve their goals. They will encourage the family to make small, achievable changes to enable them to reach the desired outcome. This can include linking them to local community groups which can act as a support network. How can you help? • Pray for us. You are welcome to join our monthly prayer meetings or just include us in your regular prayers. • Can you or anyone you know spare an hour a week to be a volunteer with us? • Are you able to support us financially? You can do this by regular giving either through the Giving tab on our website, using MyDonate or contacting our office for the Giving form. You can help raise sponsorship for an event or offer to become part of our fundraising team.

PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP In September, the volunteers returned back to the woods after a break during a hot August. I am pleased to report a lucky sighting of a slow worm enjoying the summer warmth on one of our paths. Do you enjoy walking along our woodland paths and following the marked routes? Do you enjoy seeing nature thriving on your doorstep? Do you enjoy the historic sites preserved in the woodland? If ‘yes’ is your answer to any of these questions and you can spare an hour or two each month, then please consider joining us. Meet new people, get some exercise and enjoy the fresh air, join us to help protect the woodlands. All ages and abilities are welcomed with open arms. At the beginning of the summer the group’s tool store was broken into and after the theft of some of our tools we are in need of replacements. If anyone has any old gardening tools they no longer require and would be happy to donate, please let us know (contact details below). It would be much appreciated. KESGRAVE ALLOTMENT & LEISURE GARDENERS I’m pleased to report we were blessed with warm sunny weather for our Allotment Open Day on September 9 where a good number of people attended to share lunch, stories and tips, and we all voted for the best full size and half-size plots and (for the first time) best scarecrow. The weather is now most definitely autumnal with morning mists and a nip in the air, but there’s still enough light to pop to the plot in the evenings if you have time. But when the clocks go back at the end of the month, some allotmenteers will be relegated to weekend gardening. Thankfully there should be less to do over the winter months so it balances out! With Hallowe’en very close by, hopefully there are some prize pumpkin specimens to carve. Main crop potatoes should also all be dug up now – certainly by the end of the month. You may also still have beans, onions, celeriac and carrots to harvest, and possibly some early leeks. This month you can sow over-winter onions, broad beans, hardy peas and garlic, and also plant our spring cabbage and rhubarb crowns. There’s probably still a bit of tidying and weeding needs doing before the winter – plenty of weeds still on my plot anyway – so I hope to get it ship-shape before November. We have one or two plots left if you’re interested in taking one on – could even be a lovely Christmas present for someone! Retired? Still paying a mortgage? A recent review revealed that about 1.7 million people who have bought homes using interest only mortgages are confronted by having to make payments into retirement, or past the notional redemption date, as they have no means of repaying the loan other than by selling their home. A study by the International Longevity Centre UK and the Building Societies Association (BSA) found that borrowing into older age is likely to move from niche to mainstream within the next decade. The amount of mortgage debt over-65s have is set to nearly double by 2030, from £20.1billion to £39.9bn. Paul Broadhead, head of mortgage and housing policy at the BSA: “Our lifestyles are changing, house prices are high and we are living longer. All these factors mean that people’s financial needs in retirement are moving on too. “Increasingly those nearing, or already in retirement, need to borrow. They may want to help children with a house deposit, supplement their income, deal with an existing interest-only mortgage or move into a more suitable home. The reasons will be very individual.” We would endorse all that – with the possible exception of borrowing to give money to children for a house purchase deposit – the only guaranteed winners from that will be the banks. Various other interest groups have maintained that these are ‘problems’, but as ever the ‘market’ is already developing solutions. For borrowers with good pension’s income that satisfy affordability checks, many lenders now offer mortgage products that extend beyond age 75, and some have no age limit for when loans have to be repaid, and

www.keepingintouchwith.com/kesgrave

are portable between suitable properties. These mortgages can be used for any legal purpose; for consolidating other more expensive consumer credit say. Payments of interest will be payable, normally monthly. Alternatively traditional equity release mortgages or home reversion schemes are on offer and may be suitable. These require no regular payments. Of course you will have to satisfy the lending criteria set by the lenders and for people with outstanding mortgages with large loan to value ratios, this could be an issue. But overall the most efficient way of dealing with outstanding mortgages in later life is to move home. This may sound brutal but the interest costs (even on the current, artificially low, interest rates) are painful on an ongoing basis and can compound rapidly in an equity release mortgage. Nevertheless these schemes are worth considering. But as ever it is important to take proper independent advice.

Equity release is a useful product. A market response to a demand. Used well it can provide excellent benefits for the right client. • Cash or Income from an Equity Release scheme could restrict the borrowers’ eligibility for State Benefits. • Equity released will reduce the value of the estate and could leave nothing to pass on as an inheritance. • Home Reversion plans and Lifetime Mortgages are complex products. RSPB IPSWICH LOCAL GROUP It’s now almost two years since RSPB Ipswich Local Group moved our meetings to Rushmere Church Hall where we were made very welcome. We meet on the second Thursday of the month between September and April at 7.30pm and invariably have a very enjoyable evening with a wide range of speakers offering interesting illustrated talks primarily focused on birds, but also covering other wildlife, conservation and travel. All are welcome whether RSPB members or not for a very reasonable entrance fee. At our September meeting we enjoyed a very interesting talk by Edward Jackson on the plight of the swift, and coming up in we have talks on raptors with David Darrell-Lambert (October,) house martins with Martin Tickler (November) and Scotland with our group leader Tim Kenny in December. Throughout the summer we have enjoyed walks to Kiln Meadow and Spring Wood, Newbourne Springs, Bromswell SWT Reserve, Upper Hollesley Common, Purdis Heath, Landguard NR, Cotton and Levington Creek.

HUMPTY DUMPTY PLAYGROUP It’s been very busy at playgroup as the children have been focusing on the topic All About Me throughout the first half of autumn term. The children have been learning about taking care of themselves through healthy eating and exercise, understanding different foods and allergies and things that make them unique. They have also been learning about keeping their teeth and gums healthy as we have been visited by Brenda, the community dental nurse, along with Bramble, her trusty puppy! Half term begins on Monday, October 22 and we return on Tuesday, October 30. We are an Ofsted registered childcare provider for children from the age of two years onwards. As we are registered as ‘Good’, we can provide funded places for two-year-old children who have received ‘Golden Tickets’ from Suffolk County Council. We offer 30 hours of free childcare to children who are eligible the term after their third birthday, allowing your child to be in the setting from 9am to 3.30pm, and we have signed up with HM Government to offer Tax-free Childcare as parents will no longer be able to join employer childcare voucher scheme from October 4. To find out more regarding the government’s new Childcare Choices visit: www.childcarechoices.gov.uk We are situated inside Kesgrave Community Centre on Twelve Acre Approach. You can contact us on 07837 154081 (term time) or our manager Wendy Payne: 07816 505423 / wendy.adams@hotmail.co.uk https://humptydumptyplaygr.wixsite.com/website Facebook: Humpty Dumpty Playgroup

KESGRAVE BOWLS CLUB Well, the bowls season will have finished by the time you read this.

Cup. I couldn’t have been more pleased; he certainly outplayed me.

Our teams had mixed results. The Monday Samford teams finished mid-table and the Wednesday afternoon finished third and sixth. The two-wood blues finished fourth, but the greens finished seventh so may well be down in a lower division next year.

The four-wood men’s singles has not been played yet but should be completed in the next few days. Good luck to Tony Fisher and Rick Calver.

The Wednesday triples fared better with the blues finishing fifth and the greens finishing second so hopefully they will be going up a division in 2019. Unfortunately, due to the bad weather our open triples was cut short but it was won by B Pryke and his team, second was D Flatman and his team and third was D Baldock and his team. Well done to you all. Our men’s two-wood club competition was won by Steve Cook, I was the winner of the ladies singles and my son Tony beat me to win the Memorial

A quick reminder to return your menus for our annual dinner by the latest at the AGM on Wednesday, October 24 in the bowls pavilion. Also I would like to remind you all to let me have your membership renewal forms at the AGM if you haven’t done so before. I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM and dinner and hopefully we can all look forward to a good season in 2019. Again, if you are interested in the game of bowls, please contact me and you will be made most welcome when the clubs opens in April 2019. Joyce Fisher: 01473 626075

SCHOOLS HEDGEHOG NURSERY AT GORSELAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Do you have a child aged three-four years old? Are you looking for high quality care and learning in a stimulating environment? Have you thought about the huge benefits of sending your child to a school nursery? Hedgehog Nursery at Gorseland Primary School warmly welcomes you to our open morning and afternoon. Come and see us in action! Pop in any time on Wednesday, October 10 between 9.15am and noon or on Thursday, October 11 between 1 and 3pm. Hedgehog Nursery is open Monday to Friday with wrap around care from 7.30am to 6pm with our breakfast and afterschool clubs. Hedgehog Nursery is part of Gorseland Primary School and is led by a qualified teacher, Mrs Haig, who is supported by highly qualified and experienced staff. We are very lucky that we have the use of the school’s fantastic facilities, including our forest school, ICT suite, library, large sports hall and extensive grounds to explore. This makes our provision very special. We provide a learning atmosphere where children can explore and investigate in a safe, stimulating and challenging environment. We capitalise on the children’s interests to springboard them into learning experiences that extend what they can already do. The start of term brought many new faces to Hedgehog Nursery. We have all settled in and have enjoyed exploring the indoor and outdoor environments. We particularly liked the ‘tube telephones’ that we found in the garden! If you would like more information, please contact the school office on 01473 623790 or visit: www.gorseland.net

HEATH PRIMARY SCHOOL RECEPTION OPEN MORNING The window for application to Reception in September 2019 is now open and Heath Primary School will be holding an open morning for prospective parents on Tuesday, October 16 at 9.30am. Heath School offers a broad and rich curriculum with a particular focus on outdoor learning. We are lucky to have extensive grounds that include a dedicated Forest School area and a separate wildlife area featuring a pond with dipping platform. We are also proud of our school garden that includes an orchard, allotment and chicken enclosure. At Heath, we have a dedicated team of highly-skilled and experienced Reception teachers and a committed team of support staff who work together to ensure that every child has the best possible start to school life. For those who require childcare outside of the school day, our popular before and after school club, Jigsaw, is available. There are also a number of reputable childminders in our area. For more information, or to obtain an application form, please contact the school office on 01473 622806. If you are unable to attend the open morning, please call to arrange an appointment for a guided tour at a time that is convenient to you. Co-Head Teachers Sue Bowditch and David Whatley

HEATHLANDS COMMUNITY PRE-SCHOOL All of the children have settled back into pre-school life smoothly and have enjoyed telling us their tales about their adventures during the summer holidays. We formally welcome all the new children and the families who have joined both the pre-school and out-of-school club in September and look forward to learning with you all. This term the pre-school children are exploring what makes a superhero and talking about well-known superheroes. We are discussing the real-life super heroes such as firemen, doctors and police and are hoping to have visits from these occupations during the term. We held a successful Macmillan Coffee Morning at the end of September and are very grateful for your support for this worthy cause. Plenty of cake was enjoyed by all! We are looking forward to a walk with Suffolk Wildlife Trust to the local heath in the middle of October to explore the changes in the autumn season. We are also hoping to have a visit from some hedgehogs in the very near future. Our next open evening is planned for November 6 at 7.30pm. This is a great chance for prospective parents to come in and see what we have to offer. If you are interested in attending, please telephone us on 01473 417517 and speak to Monika or Julie to book your place. Heathlands is a well-established, committee-run preschool situated in the grounds of Broke Hall Community Primary School. We can offer funded places for eligible two-year-olds and for all other children the term after their third birthday. A breakfast and after-school clubs are also available. We are pleased to accept applications for a place for terms starting January 2019 and beyond.

MARTLESHAM & KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOLS At Kesgrave Playschool we have started the autumn term by looking at our favourite things. So we have had fun learning with Peppa Pig, PJ masks and Charlie and Lola. We’ve mixed paints and other media to make our favourite colours, and created a pet shop in the role play area which sells our favourite pets! We have also started our book share with parents which allows parents to join us for a story and to share and borrow our beautiful books. Looking forward to much more fun and learning. At Martlesham Playschool we were busy over the summer in our holiday club, going on lots of outings, being pirates and princesses, baking and lots more, and we will have more holiday activities for October half term. We have introduced our Little Explorers club, an opportunity for the children to go out and explore the world around them with lots of fun activities such as tree rubbing and tents in the woods. Please check our Facebook page for all our up-to-date information. Our Annual General Meeting takes place at Martlesham Playschool on Wednesday, October 17 at 7.30pm. We would urge all our parents and carers to support us at this important meeting. We still have some spaces left for this and future terms and we welcome you to come and look round. Our dedicated team and small numbers ensure that your child will have excellent opportunities to learn and grow with us. Call us at Kesgrave Playschool on 07746 907060 to arrange a visit or go to our Facebook page: martleshamandkesgraveplayschools At Martlesham we offer all year round places. BIXLEY FARM CHURCH AT TOWER HALL SUNDAY@4 We marked our first year as a church at BF in early September with a shared tea, BBQ, fun and games. The weather was fantastic so we all sat out on tables enjoying the food prepared by people from the three church congregations. This was followed by our 4pm service where we were reminded of our calling to serve the community. It also was an opportunity to thank everyone who has helped us make it through the year. We are especially thankful for the use of Tower Hall and the facilities it offers for such events. But church is more than just meetings on Sundays. Little Lambs, our parent and toddler group, has resumed after the summer break. It has been going well with more than 20 sets of parents, grandparents and childminders frequently attending. Many have commented on the warm welcome they have received. These sessions run from 9.15-11am every Friday in term time at Tower Hall for a nominal £1 per family. If you would like any other details please contact Emma Allinson: families@mie.org.uk In addition to our Sunday services and Little Lambs, we also have a fortnightly midweek home-group in Foxwood Crescent. This is an opportunity to study the Bible together, pray for each other and get to know people a little better. This term we are studying a book on how as Christians we can experience God’s guidance in our lives; whether in routine matters or in the more serious decisions we all need to make at some point in our lives. While we can read and inform ourselves on most matters, there are issues that need greater discernment and wisdom. Just knowing facts and information cannot give a sense of peace and reassurance that we often desire when making major decisions. We also meet for a time of prayer at Tower Hall on the first Thursday of the month at 7pm and 8pm (two 45-minute sessions). If you have anything or anyone you wish to pray for, we are there for you. You just need to turn up for either of these sessions or contact us using the details below.

Declaring God’s Way - Sharing His Love Well, here we are, now into autumn. Hearing on the radio that September 1 is the first day of autumn gave me a bit of a jolt. Children are going back to school after a long sunny break and some starting high school or university for the first time. All our activities start up again too. Set out below are the activities at Rushmere Baptist Church. A reminder that The Alpha Course, which lasts for ten weeks, began on Tuesday, September 18 and meets every Tuesday evening from 7-9.30pm, with an Alpha Holy Spirit away day on a Saturday mid-way through. Each session begins with a supper and a chance to get to know others in the group. This is followed by a DVD and a time of discussion, when everyone is welcome to ask questions and share their opinion with the rest of the group. Our All-Age Harvest Service will be on Sunday, September 30. REGULAR ACTIVITIES Sunday 10.45am: Morning Worship with a crèche for the very young, Friends of God (FOG) for age three to School Year 2, Mustard Seeds for School Years 3-6 and The Tribe for School Years 7 + 6.30pm: Evening Worship (traditional style service once a month) Monday 6.15-7.30pm: FFaF Children’s Club for School Years 3-6 / SPRING for young teens Wednesday 2.30pm: Friendship Hour on the second Wednesday 2.30pm: Rag-Tag Drop-in on the first Wednesday 7pm: Art and Craft Class Thursday

Friday

9.15am: Rushmere Ducklings (term time) 6.30-8pm: Evening Prayer Meeting

Saturday 10.30am-noon: Meeting Point Coffee Morning, fourth Saturday For more information visit: www.rushmerebaptist.org.uk Minister: The Rev Heather Marsden Minister-in-Training: Hazel Hunting Secretary: Mrs Jean Cutting Church Telephone Number: 01473 721455 This month we are looking at what joy means. It’s a good feeling or emotion. It’s not an idea or decision you make and it transcends our thinking in as much as it goes beyond our thought patterns. Emotion is instant, immediate and unbidden. It comes from a power outside ourselves. When we do something wrong we feel a sense of guilt but, despite this, as Christians we know that a power beyond us has forgiven that wrong or sin. Where does this emotion come from? We believe it comes from the ‘soul’ or that something that makes us who we are. It is somehow within us but not of the body, a beyond-ness of our being. This is where true joy comes from. Joy is more than pleasure or happiness because they come from bodily experiences. When our bodies move they do so without right or wrong of themselves until we decide to do something with them such as to hit or hug someone.

As always, everyone is welcome to join us on Sunday for our regular weekly service at Tower Hall from 4-5pm. There are opportunities to speak to clergy or other members of the church, with time for personal prayer at the end. Holy Communion is celebrated every other Sunday.

We know that the Holy Spirit, which is God given, helps and motivates us in our day to day lives so we deal correctly with what we go through. It is what is seen when we realise just what the sacrifice of the cross has done in reconnecting us with God, who desires a relationship with His people, all of them. When we get close to God there is a newness, a peace and a joy. As we look into God’s heart of love towards us we find sweetness and refreshment. And that is an offer that is open to everyone. If you want to find out more then we’ll see you on Sunday!
